Building a Secure Future Ken Earwood, Titan Financial & Insurance Services

In Greek Mythology, Titans ruled long before the gods existed. Behemoths, they opened the world for what was to come. Today, we know a varied few as true titans: of industry, literature, music, mathematics, sport.

Kit Marlowe, The Beatles, Einstein, Teemu Selanne (for the Orange County natives). Ken Earwood might not be on your shortlist yet, but as the President of Titan Financial and Insurance Services, his expertise is of the influence you’ll want when looking towards retirement.

Sixteen years ago, Ken started Titan Financial & Insurance Services, Inc. in Huntington Beach and has operated in the ensuing years since in the same location. But the journey to opening his own firm began more than two decades ago, with simple work ethic. Much like the world-builders, “my parents taught me everything about starting from the ground up. My Dad was an electrical engineer, and worked for the same company for 48 years. My mom was an entrepreneur. Everything was earned.” A graduate from Long Beach State with a degree in Business Marketing, Ken jumped into the industry feet first, with a job at one of the nation’s largest brokerage firms. With his college sweetheart by his side, loving his day-to-day was easy, and remains so today. Without her support, we couldn’t have come this far.

“Everyone remembers what it’s like not to have money. Like when you were a young married couple just starting out. We had nothing to begin with, but we had each other and our work ethic.” The work at Titan changes constantly, but their number one priority is ensuring that the biggest fear in financial planning never comes to fruition for any of their clients: that you outlive your money.

“We make sure each person that comes to see us has a plan in place to ensure they have funds that will last the rest of their life," he says. “You don’t have to live paycheck to paycheck forever like when you were first married....you certainly don’t have end up back where you started in retirement.”

Ken meets with his clients annually, keeping them on the right track, ensuring each allocation is in the proper place, and that individual checklist items are taken care of: life insurance, investment taxes, retirement income planning, chronic care planning and Legacy/Wealth transfer planning with tax-free death benefits. At every stage, he is there to meet your needs. Getting started, accumulating wealth, getting ready to distribute it over your retired years, or even pass onto loved ones. There isn’t much they can’t cover, and the pride Ken takes in his client services shows. Most firms simply drill into accumulation, “they don’t bet on safety in retirement and distribution. Putting up numbers on the overall market is all well and good, but how do you make sure you’re not going to come up short in the long run?”

“My kids are so important to me - and I want to leave them a legacy they’re proud of as well," says Ken. "I have two sons and a daughter, and it is incredibly valuable for them to see a balanced book in the making, so they have something to model.”

The Titans were displaced, eventually. Their age ended, as will all of ours. But what, Ken would like to know,

will be left after you’re gone? Going to church and having faith in Jesus Christ teaches us to give service, help in the well-being of others, our neighbors and community. All aspects of his personal and professional life that Ken hopes are communicated when clients put their financial futures in Titan’s hands.

“I’ve been in this business for 28 years: I want my clients to trust the time I’ve put in, but also the man that I am. One who is looking towards the future with you. A secure, wellplanned, stress-free future.”

The Happiest Place in HB

the Holidays! for

The nature of gift purchasing has changed greatly since the advent of the internet. How has Absolutely Fabulous stayed above

the fray and blossomed while the rest of the gift industry flounders?

“That’s easy,” responds Diane Silverstein, owner of the iconic Huntington

Beach-based Absolutely Fabulous gift boutique, “quality, selection, price range, and ease of shopping.” After many visits to her “absolutely fabulous” gift and décor shop, I would have to agree. “Plus – we ship world-wide, so you can mail your stuff right from here!”

While the internet excels at making home shopping the easiest experience, when you know exactly what you’re looking for, much of holiday gift-giving starts with “who is this for, and how much do I want to spend on them?” Absolutely Fabulous makes this type of shopping easy with their “you know the personality, we know the product” approach to holiday gift-giving. “You see,” Diane explains in her charming English accent, “we spend hours and hours searching for the best new products offered in the gift industry. When our customers come in with their lists, we walk them around and point out options that our customers would never have found in an internet search.”

Diane is not kidding on that last point. The variety and uniqueness of products at Absolutely Fabulous is as-

tounding: hand-made jewelry, Miche Bag purses (the ones where you just drop the “insides” of your purse into a new shell, rather than having to dump all of your stuff out!), $10 silk scarves, old-school shaving kits for men, a “Daddy’s Tool Bag” that includes diaper changing equipment, and instructional DVD, face mask and other funny items, rare paintings by successful artists, large crystal chandeliers, crystal perfume bottles, stuffed animal baby bottle covers, piggy banks for kids,

wedding party gifts, rare Disney art and collectibles, holiday-themed decor and gifts, Christmas decorations that range from very inexpensive bottle stoppers and tree decorations to 6-foot high collectible Santa dolls. Ab Fab really does cover the gamut of gifts for anyone: “from birth to death and everything in-between is our moniker” Diane proudly states. I tend to agree.

This holiday season, find out why Absolutely Fabulous is so appropriately-named. Connect with Diane and the crew at Absolutely Fabulous located at 6026 Warner Avenuein Huntington Beach, call (714) 842-1608 or visit www.absolutelyfabulous1.com

BY HER SIDE

City of Hope’s Highly Specialized and Compassionate Care Transforms Grateful Patient’s Breast Cancer Journey

Sarah Sanders wasn’t shocked when she was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 41 in September 2015. In fact, she expected it.

That’s because Sanders has a strong family history of the disease on her father’s side. Her paternal grandmother died at age 35 from breast cancer, an aunt passed away at age 50, and another aunt was diagnosed in her 60s and successfully treated. This knowledge made all the difference in Sanders’ approach to her breast health.

Another thing that made all the difference in her breast cancer care was her choice of oncologist, Wade Smith, M.D., who specializes in breast cancer treatment at City of Hope Newport Beach Fashion Island. After her tumor was removed, Dr. Smith performed cutting-edge genomic testing that determined chemotherapy wasn’t necessary. Sanders said that when Dr. Smith told her the news, it was the only time she cried.

“Had he not been on top of that, I would've lost my hair, my body

would've gone through hell, and it would have been unnecessary in my case,” Sanders said. “He represents everything City of Hope stands for.”

Sanders also appreciates the environment at City of Hope Newport Beach Fashion Island and the staff, whom she describes as the “best in their field.”

Sanders recognizes how important it is that her tumor was discovered early. Sanders’ family history caught the attention of her OB/ GYN, who referred her for genetic and other testing. Sanders learned that she had the ATM mutation that increased her cancer risk. Then an MRI revealed a small tumor in its early stages, close to her armpit, that may not have been caught with a traditional mammogram. Because of the gene mutation and her family history, Sanders chose to have a double mastectomy.

Recuperating from the procedure was challenging. Pre-diagnosis, Sanders led a take-charge lifestyle. For Sanders, the most “life-changing aspect” of breast cancer was letting someone else take care of her – specifically, her mom, Teri, who basically moved into Sanders’ home to help her.

Between the mastectomy, reconstructive surgery, an infection, and a hysterectomy, Sanders had six surgeries within one year. During this time, she was referred to Jeffrey Weitzel, M.D., a City of Hope clinical geneticist who studies the ATM mutation and took her care “to a level no one else can match.”

“First, it made me aware of other cancer risks I have because of the mutation,” Sanders said. “More important is the peace of mind, knowing my care is with the ‘A’ team. I am with the institution that's going to have the most cutting-edge technology

and advanced medical science. City of Hope is the place to be if you are a patient with a genetic mutation.”

Sanders urges people – especially those with a family history of breast cancer – to take advantage of City of Hope’s personalized and highly specialized care.

“There is a massive difference when you are being monitored by a compassionate, technologically advanced cancer center like City of Hope and detecting cancer early,” Sanders said. “I never looked like a cancer patient because I was treated by specialists like Dr. Smith. So that's my battle cry.”

Hope is growing at City of Hope Orange County. POPULAR DIETS AND YOUR UROLOGICAL HEALTH

I am frequently asked by my patients if their diet can impact their urinary system. This is particularly relevant with today’s popular diets such as Keto, Zone, Raw Food, Paleo, Intermittent Fasting and many others.

Iadvise my patients that it is best to familiarize yourself with any possible side effects, including ones that can affect your urinary system before you decide if it’s right for you.

For example, the foundation of the Keto diet is adherence to an extremely low-carb, high-fat diet in order to put your body into a metabolic state called ketosis. This process helps your body to be more efficient at burning fat. However, you should be aware of the known effects of having your body go into a metabolic ketosis state. At the onset of the diet, the effect of lowering carbohydrates stimulates the body to burn ketones for energy instead of glucose. Once the body is in ketosis some people may experience headaches, dehydration,

irritability, constipation, nausea, and fatigue.

Additionally, there are potential urological problems. High fat intake may be a factor that promotes prostate cancer development. Dehydration puts stress on the kidneys and increases the risk of kidney stones of all types. The high intake of animal proteins makes your urine more acidic and increases uric acid levels. This combination makes you more susceptible to uric acid kidney stones as well as gout.

The take away message is that there is a potential for unanticipated side effects in most diets. Whether a diet is right for you depends on many factors ranging from your basic me-

tabolism to the presence of many coexisting medical conditions such as kidney disease, high blood pressure, kidney stones and diabetes.

Be sure to talk to your doctor for advice before starting any diet.

To schedule an appointment, call 888-735-4336. For prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment questions, the direct line is 844-HIFU DOC (844-443-8362). For the No Needle/No Scalpel vasectomy, the direct line is 844-Easy Vas (844-327-9827).

When I was younger, my Mom loved to read me the book “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie.” The plot essentially revolves around an ever-growing list of to-do’s that had to be accomplished, all set into motion by the simple act of giving a mouse a cookie. This tale came back to me recently when I purchased a new television at Best Buy.

What was a simple shopping trip ended up being an adult’s version of that circular tale. If you give a grownup a television, they’ll have to measure their wall. When they measure the wall, they’ll realize they may actually

have room for a bigger television. When they buy the bigger television, they’ll find out they have no idea how to mount it to the wall. When they start mounting it to the wall, they’ll see that the power outlets are all in the wrong places. When they realize

the outlets need to be moved, they’ll call an electrician. (This could go on forever.)

Luckily for clients who have been on the receiving end of ReelTime’s patient, intelligent, and personalized

service, the rabbit hole of home automation doesn’t have to swallow you entirely. With the help of their independent certified Control4 dealer, it’s easy to update your home without upending your entire life. After all, the true luxury of an integrated entertainment system is really dependent on its ability to deliver seamless entertainment. By placing every control at your fingertips, the team at ReelTime helps homeowners manage everything from how brightly lit your family room is, to your streaming devices - all with a single remote. And best yet? You can control your whole home from the comfort of your couch- even seeing who is at the front door, without ever leaving your seat. Simple, clean, and uncluttered.

And on the home entertainment front … when you started planning for your ultimate home theater set-up and sound system, could you find the right media cabinetry for your particular space – cabinetry that wouldn’t catch on fire from the heat of the equipment, or that would simply look good in the room? Did you understand half of what the televisions, receivers and other devices could

do, and did you have anyone to hold your hand to make sure you weren’t overspending for what you wanted?

Big box retailers, the professed champions of value, are happy to sell you any home theater and sound equipment you think you might like,

and send you off to figure it out at home. That’s what they do. And that’s all they do.

If you want the home theater system that you envision, seek the services of Skip Myers and his team of experienced professionals at ReelTime to take you from start to finish for the home theater or sound system of your dreams.

“Usually there is a part of the job that you find you just can’t do by yourself,” says Skip, who has overseen the design and installation of thousands of home theater and sound systems over the course of 40-plus years in the business. “You get your brand new television home, you’re so excited, then you realize you need to move an outlet or none of the cabinets you can find will fit your space. We’re here to make sure you get the equipment that will give you what you want and the system that will work with that equipment, without leaving you to fend for yourself.”

We’re here to make sure you get the equipment that will give you what you want and the system that will work with that equipment, without leaving you to fend for yourself.

Skip opened the doors at ReelTime in 1983. Today, the technicians and designers that Skip assigns to clients are all ReelTime employees, knowledgeable in all home theater and sound technologies. First, they work closely with you to determine what you’re looking for. Then they custom design every aspect of the project, from wiring to custom-built cabinets, frames, or built-in wall designs. Finally, licensed, in-house contractors install your entertainment system with care and precision.

There are a couple of things that people may not think about when they embark upon the road to their own home entertainment system.

“You need to think about your home theater goals,” says Skip. “You don’t have to do everything at once – you can do it bit by bit – but if you know where you’re going, you’ll save money and when it’s all said and done, you’ll have exactly what you want and what you will actually use. We’re here to help you determine your goals.”

Skip is also an advocate for getting what you’ll use, which is part of the design and planning process.

“You can buy everything you want to, but if you can’t operate it, what’s the point?” he says. “There’s the television, DVD and Blue-ray; there’s the receiver, there’s Apple TV… it’s all great, but how do you get them to work together? We’re big advocates of the universal remote. Not everyone knows how to get the most out of their systems with one powerful remote – they’re not expensive, but the best ones are computer-based. We’ll set that up for you so you’re getting the most out of your custom system.”

It’s easy to assume that personal service is expensive, but a conversation with Skip and the experts at ReelTime is free. Ultimately, in planning your purchases for the right outcome, you’re likely to save money while avoiding chilling setbacks. The only chilling you want to be doing is in front of your fantasy home theater system.

Schwarz’ incredibly diverse menu features specialties for every palate, which is perfect for my strictly meat-and-potatoes husband and the inner seafood-ie in me. Dishes are defined by creatively inspired California cuisine simply prepared with a focus on the freshest of ocean fare and flavorful seasonal ingredients. The trick here is in deciding between each of the mouthwatering starters, salads, small plates and entrees.

The pan-fried brussel sprouts enhanced with lemon, balsamic and cranberries are not-to-be missed and it’s equally obvious as to why the thinly sliced yellowtail hamachi with Santa Barbara uni and paired with apple citrus vinaigrette and blood orange is such a popular starter. The carmelized butternut gnocchi with sage brown butter and pork speck was literally melt-in-your mouth rich and delicious.

Driftwood Kitchen Destination Dining

This past year, I started rereading a collection of classics. As I began working through Jane Austen’s masterpieces, I decided it’d be a lovely and delicious (pun intended) endeavor to apply the same concept to a “collection” of dining experiences worth writing home about.

To be sure, there is no shortage of exceptional establishments in Orange County upon which to embark on such a sojourn. One such standout is Driftwood Kitchen in Laguna Beachthe premier waterfront, ocean-to-table dining experience of the freshest and finest seafood, steaks and handshucked oysters, alongside handcraft-

My new favorite meal is Driftwood’s pan seared diver scallops paired with fregola pasta, cauliflower, Moroccan salsa and marcona almonds while my husband was thrilled with his cooked-to-perfection Double R Ranch prime ribeye accompanied by a creamy parsnip puree, green beans, sweet garlic and pickled pearl onion.

It’s easy to call food honest, when it tastes like it comes right off your best friend’s table - but certainly hard to beat when exemplary service and value extend to each inspired detail of the dining experience. Even Jane would agree.

LOS LOBOS

“We’re a Mexican American band, and no word describes America like immigrant. Most of us are children of immigrants, so it’s perhaps natural that the songs we create celebrate America in this way.” So says Louie Perez, the “poet laureate” and primary wordsmith of Los Lobos, when describing the songs on the band’s new album, Gates of Gold.

GIN BLOSSOMS

The band’s fusion of Pop, Melodic Rock, Folk and Country elements took the airwaves by siege, making the band an MTV playlist hostage for almost a decade and the group a natural 90’s mainstay. In 2017 the band went back in the studio recording a new album. Fans will get a taste of the new album as it works its way into their live set.

AEP- It’s About Saving You Money

Calling all existing Medicare Beneficiaries, are you looking to save some money on either your monthly premiums, your co-pays, or your prescription drug copays?

The biggest way to save money is to see if a Medicare Advantage plan would work for you. If it does meet your needs, then you cancel your Medicare Supplement and Medicare Drug plan for 2022 because the Medicare Advantage plan gives you that type of coverage and financial protection from medical bills. You’re no longer paying a premium for Medicare Supplement or a Medicare RX plan if you decide to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan. These plans in Orange County typically have no premium.

In regards to a “standalone” Medicare RX plan, some plans used to not have a name brand drug deductible and now they do. Have your prescriptions changed since you enrolled in your current Medicare RX plan? If they’re expensive medications (in the $40-$100 range when you fill them) then it’s time for a review. (FYI, Type 1 diabetics: there are Medicare Advantage plans that cover insulin at a $0 co-pay now, for the entire year!) The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (aka AEP) ends December 7th, if you’d like to schedule a no cost Medicare options review contact me soon, my calendar is filling up!

BRONWYN GORMAN | Decorating Den Interiors

Over a half-century ago, a former fabric salesman named Steve Bursten had a vision: an unparalleled interior design catalogue that would match creatives to homes across the US and Canada.

Originally known as American Drapery Consultants, Steve took his dream to the streets, and within a single year, the first franchise was born. Today, with designers scattered across the states and our neighbor to the north, Decorating Den Interiors (DDI) can tackle a single room or build an entirely new home with you. To your style, with your specifications, using the best product possible.

An expert in her field, Interior Designer Bronwyn Gorman is more than a creative mind at DDI. Bringing a treasure trove of style to the table and a pocketful of tricks and tips to build out the most “you” space possible, her methodologies are deliberate and dedicated. “I truly believe that a home should reflect the people who live in it, not the person who designed it.”

A longtime Orange County resident, Bronwyn embraces the unique lifestyle of its population, and the indoor-outdoor spaces that reflect it. Where else can you hit the waves and the ski hill in the same day?

“A house isn’t just a home, it is your refuge, your sanctuary at the end of the day, and responsible for ushering you into each new one," she says. "I want to promote health and happiness with my designs - from the ease of process to the details in your favorite room.”

Bronwyn's business, a reflection of her personal values and ideals, takes the leap from outstanding customer service into genuine respect and care for her clients. “I’m passionate and motivated to understand each individual I have the pleasure of working with." And it shows in her projects.

From bedding to window treatments, furniture to light fixtures, no detail is too small. Once a budget is reached and agreed upon, a final consultation and presentation come to life, and the design of your dreams begins to take shape. Bronwyn’s design services couldn’t be more thorough or more convenient. Because she comes to you, she is able to see the lighting and get a feel for the flow/how things work in your home.

“Feeling like you’re understood and falling in love with your space each time you walk through the door don’t have to be mutually exclusive," says Bronwyn. "It's in our attention to detail and customization that we can truly make a difference, as we can offer options and resources to create a room like no other, one that is uniquely you."

SoCalMulti-GenerationalDestinationFun for JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa

There are a few places in the world that I’ve truly relaxed outside my own home. Believe me, it is a very short list. But let me tell you - topping the charts is JW Marriott’s Desert Springs Resort & Spa. And coming into the absolutely blissful fall weather in California - well - you couldn’t pick a better time to load up the entire family for a quick jaunt out to Palm Desert get one last adventure in before the rush and bustle of the holidays hit.

As a mom of two, I understand how rare the feeling of relaxation really is, and (congratulate me) successfully talked my husband into booking our family a stay at the resort for a weekend respite from carpooling, afterschool activities, worrying about what to make for dinner. Just looking at images online showcasing the result of the property’s recent multi-million dollar renovation was enough for him to ask how soon we could book a weekend away and it snowballed from there.

We shared our plans with close family friends who have similarly aged children - they booked the same weekend to meet up

for what turned out to be an unforgettable, all-inclusive experience - from luxury accommodations and abundant amenity to fine dining, indoor/outdoor recreation and entertainment.

The property features an enhanced arrival experience, a reimagined spa and 884 luxuriously redesigned modern guest rooms and suites. Think hardwood floors, indulgent bathrooms, workspaces with intelligently placed USB ports, and entertaining spaces with views of the pool or lake on-site make the choice between going out and staying in a real no-brainer. Both: take a dip in the outdoor pools or test out your golf swing on the links. Play a set or a full match on the tennis courts. Get pampered at the day spa, savor innovative cuisine.

Even heading out to a meal here is an adventure ... the property provides gondola rides to and from many of its restaurants via an elaborate system of Venetian-like waterways which run throughout the resort’s immaculately landscaped grounds. Dining destinations include Rockwood Grill (upscale American fare showcasing locally sourced ingredients), Mikado Japanese Steakhouse (authentic Japanese cuisine) and Blue Star Lounge (California cuisine in a lively indoor lounge or charming outdoor patio with firepits).

The icing on the cake for kids of all ages? JW Marriott’s newly unveiled Entertainment Zone Arcade (EZ) and Family Passport Program. The “EZ”

is a 12,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art arcade (the largest in the state, no less) where the kids - and their parents - ran amok - challenging each other to timeless classics like PacMan, Skee Ball and Air Hockey and new favorites including high-tech simulators, motocross racing games, four lanes of duckpin bowling and more.

The JW Family Passport expands the resort’s offerings for the younger set. With an emphasis on creativity, culinary, and active lifestyle, the resort provides an innovative outlet of fun-filled adventures

thoughtfully curated for families and guests of all ages. From nature walks, family yoga and educational flamingo feedings to ice cream socials, scavenger hunts, trivia nights and more. Guests have their “passport” stamped after participating in a wide array of activities and redeem prizes from the resort’s treasure chest. Bonus! Book your passport online to receive complimentary breakfast for kids under 12 during your stay.

Some getaways are for exploring the envions. Others, like our recent weekend away to the Desert Springs Resort and Spa are for taking full advantage of the recreation, dining, amenity and entertainment without ever having to leave the resort grounds.

The Benefits of Diabetic Socks

The primary purpose of diabetic socks is to keep your feet dry, decrease your risk for foot injury and avoid preventing or slowing blood circulation. The difference between diabetic socks and regular cotton socks is that they are usually are made of materials that wick away moisture, are fitted, padded and are non-binding.

Because people with diabetes are at higher risk of foot injuries and infection due to damage to their circulatory and nervous

systems caused by high blood sugar levels, they would benefit from wearing diabetic socks.

Nerve damage, or neuropathy, decreases sensation and increases risk of injury, particularly on the bottom of the feet and can also cause people with diabetes to be unaware of an injury and delay treatment. Circulatory problems also make it harder for wounds to heal.

For these reasons and more, proper foot care is critically important for people with diabetes and diabetic socks are designed with these specific issues in mind.

CARE TIPS

• Look at and touch your feet everyday

• Keep your feet clean and dry

• Cut or file toenails with the shape of the toe, smoothing all sharp edges

• Moisturize dry skin with a lotion

• Avoid injury to the feet. Have corns, calluses or ingrown toenails treated by a professional

• Wear well-fitting, soft leather or fabric shoes

• Check shoes daily for cracks, pebbles, or other things that might damage your feet

• Get your blood glucose under control

• Wear well-fitting socks, without a thick toe seam, made of material that wicks moisture away from skin

Be aware of:

• Changes in skin color or temperature

• Swelling in the foot or ankle

• Pain in the legs

• Open sores on the feet that are slow to heal

• Ingrown toenails or toenails infected with fungus

• Corns/calluses/ bunions

• Dry cracks in the skin, especially around the heel

If you have a foot problem that is slow to go away or continues to get worse, contact a healthcare professional immediately.

It’s Not Epoxy, It’s SpartaFlex!

For nearly 40 years, southern California homeowners have used Epoxy for garage and industrial floor coating projects despite its tendency to yellow, it’s soft and easy to scratch surface and it’s tendency to be permanently damaged by the hot, high performance tires found on most cars in the OC area.

Today OC homeowners don’t have to settle for Epoxy and all of its flaws anymore. SpartaFlex is an advanced, next generation 100% solids polyaspartic floor coating that gives your garage a beautiful finish that is 3x harder than epoxy, resists yellowing while also resisting permanent damage from hot tires. Perhaps best of all, SpartaFlex comes with a much better warranty than Epoxy.

Perkins Custom Coatings has been installing SpartaFlex on OC garage floors for nearly 14 years and has completed over 9,000 floors during that period of time. Its CEO and owner, Paul Frankel is considered by many to be the most knowledgeable contractor in the local market. “Unlike many of our competitors, we strive to do an onsite assessment including a moisture test for every floor coating project we install and instead of using the ‘one size fits all’ approach, we develop a coating solution that we believe will last for decades not just for a few years.”

Perkins uses only the most advanced surface preparation methods available and will either diamond grind or shot blast every floor that he installs. Old, failing, yellowed ep-

oxy coatings can also be removed during this same process. “Despite the fact that Coatings Industry requires concrete to at least be diamond ground before installing a new coating system, many of my competitors will install their coatings right over raw or pressure washed concrete just to save a few bucks - I will never do that” says Paul.

Perkins also is known for its professional and unique approach to repairing concrete cracks. “Anyone can slap some crack repair paste to cosmetically fix a crack” says Paul. A year later, when the concrete moves again and damages their brand new floor coating, the devastated homeowner will learn that this damage is not covered by the typical Epoxy warranty. “We are the only company that I know of that uses a ‘structural crack repair’ technique to fix cracks. The process is so effective we can offer our customers a warranty that can cover future damage from cracks!” says Paul.

After the surface prep is completed, a very effective moisture control primer is applied to the concrete. “This is extremely important” says Paul because for many homes built in Socal before 2005, elevated moisture vapor levels in the garage concrete can have a detrimental impact on floor coatings. Paul does a fast and non-destructive moisture test for every one of the pre-2005 homes he visits and develops a unique installation plan for each home. For newer homes, Paul and his crew can use a basic primer that dries a bit faster allowing installation of a garage floor in as little as one day!

The color chips that give the Perkins floor its legendary appearance are sandwiched between this primer and finish coat. Perkins carries the widest selection of colors and sizes in the market and uses a ‘full chip broadcast’, not a partial sprinkling of chips like many of its competitors. “The full chip broadcast gives the floor a consistent appearance and makes the floor much more durable and helps hide dirt better than the partial broadcast finish” says Paul.

Finally, Perkins installs the SpartaFlex polyaspartic finish coat and the finished garage comes to life. “Epoxy & SpartaFlex floor coatings are virtually identical in appearance when they are first installed” says Paul. “However, when you will really begin to appreciate a SpartaFlex floor is a few months down the road when you would typically start to see problems develop with an Epoxy floor. If there was a better material on the market, I would be selling it, but there isn’t and that is why we love selling SpartaFlex.”

For more information or to see for yourself the advantages of SpartaFlex over Epoxy, you can call Perkins Custom Coatings, at 866-330-1DAY (1329) or visit their informative website at www.perkinscustomcoatings.com.

Life. Organized.

Classy Closets’ unique, custom solutions for the home and office can instantly double or even triple your storage space.

Closet organization is something of an oxymoron at my house. Same goes for my home office. I actually do know where everything is in the stacks of paper that perpetually reside atop my desk, but good luck having anyone else make rhyme or reason of my filing “system.”

I’m clearly a candidate for the handiwork of a company like Classy Closets – if it’s a matter of function or simply

a desire to have your mess aesthetically addressed, Classy Closets will customize your work/life space with made-toorder cabinetry and organization systems for your home office, garage, bedroom, laundry room, pantry, media centers, wallbeds and more.

Think you can’t afford to bring in the professionals? Classy Closets, which has served all of Orange County and

San Diego since 2003, offers organization options for virtually every budget – from basic white melanine to solid wood cabinetry.

“Nothing we do is cookie cutter,” says Company CFO Gary Pavitt. “Although Classy Closets is a franchise, we’re not governed by the rules that typically dictate processes of typical franchise operations – particularly with regard to the materials and mounting systems we use. What works in terms of style and function at a home in Tucson, for instance, wouldn’t necessarily translate to a house in Huntington Beach. So we have the freedom to customize our work to our client’s specific needs and desires.”

Another differentiator is that Gary and his team manufacture their products right here in Southern California, which affords them the ability to offer their clients a broader range of product options at a level of quality that is “second to none.” And because they are “hands-on” from design consultation to manufacture and installation, Gary and his staff pride themselves on providing unparalleled customer service.

“What’s really fun is having the ability to create the products in-house,” says Gary. “I really enjoy introducing new ways to make things better, bringing in new products and keeping up with the latest trends in the industry. We go out of our way to keep our customers satisfied … that’s what makes it all worthwhile. As in any business, your customers are golden and we’ve been very fortunate that a large percentage of our business is in referrals.”

Repeat customers Marta and Mike Fowler of San Diego say that Classy

Closets is a “dream company - one that not only delivers beautiful craftsmanship, but also that elusive quality of excellent service. Every good cliché regarding their work applies.”

“This is our second home that Classy Closets has refined to meet all our storage needs, from closets to garage, from bathroom storage to entertainment center. And they never try to oversell, giving honest recommendations for products, charging fair prices within reach,” says Marta. “Their creative solutions and impeccable workmanship combine to make functional pieces we love living with. We have only one warning: Classy Closets is addictive, and you will find yourself wanting to spread the good news.”

In a letter to Gary’s business partner Kate Monaghan, Carlsbad-based Interior Designer Karen Wirrig echoes the Fowler’s sentiment and adds that “my new master closet is beautiful and your attention to detail is evident. I also want to commend your installation crew. They were on time, tidy, polite, and did excellent work … I will wholeheartedly recommend your company to all my clients. It has been a pleasure to work with you all.” More resort than gym.

Performance & Professionalism: Dr. Slide-Door

It’s a new year. I, along with everyone I know, made resolutions: mostly hoping that this year would be better than the last, but some that genuinely reflected an optimistic mindset. Said mindset led my husband and I to craft one that hadn't topped our previous lists: fix broken things.

Like most everyone we know, our family has spent considerably more time at home these past months - and knocking around the house all day, we've made a priority

of a dizzying array of home improvement projects - both indoors and out - that we'd previously deferred. Turns out, we're not alone.

A common refrain among our friend group? Countless home appliances to be replaced. Garden and landscaping projects to embark on. And a rather surprising number of sliding glass doors in need of repair in our collective Southern California homes.

If hauling open your sliding door requires Herculean strength, it’s likely you’re experiencing rollers with dirt and dust buildup so they don’t roll the way they used to. Over the years, it’s common for the rollers to wear to the point that you may actually be dragging the entire weight of the sliding door across the track, which causes even more damage and drag every time you do it.

Whether your door is modern or ancient, made of aluminum, vinyl or wood … all you have to do to “remedy your rolling troubles” is schedule a free inspection. A tech will come out to see if the components can be fixed or replaced, and then...fix it. With over 25 years of industry experience, Dr. Slide-Door is the number one chosen sliding glass door repair service in Southern California. What sets them apart? Each member of Dr. Slide Door’s team arrives with everything you’ll need on site.

“Your sliding door professional will replace the parts right down to the rollers, leaving your door feeling weightless and good as new. You’ll be amazed at how easily your door slides open and closed.”

Enter Shy Hadan. Known as Dr. SlideDoor, Shy's father was in the business of selling sliding doors, but when he saw that there was no one to fix them,

With parts made in Germany, you can be assured that your “new” door could last another 20 years: plenty of time to tackle out the rest of your resolutions.

Mission Viejo Wigs: Where Customers are “Family”

Mission Viejo Wigs is truly a family business. Not in the traditional sense, where its owners and operators share the same genes. But rather in such a way that every person who has walked through Owner Betty Darroch’s doors in the 30+ years she has been in operation immediately felt like a member of Darroch’s extended family.

As a professional hair and wig stylist since 1962, Betty began her career at CBS where her résumé reads like a celebrity screenplay starring the coifs of a veritable “who’s who” of Hollywood: Ann Margaret, Carol Lawrence, the Midnight Specials and the Sonny & Cher Show. She went on to work for the Hallelujah Hollywood Show at the MGM Hotel in Las Vegas.

But it wasn’t until she opened her own business in Mission Viejo that she felt as though she were “truly doing God’s work.”

Her clients today include people who are experiencing hair loss due to chemotherapy treatment, alopecia or other medical conditions. Betty specializes in wigs, hairpieces and toupees for women, men and children and carries only the highest quality brands. Each wig or hairpiece is custom fit to the client for the most natural look and feel – no one will know you’re wearing a wig unless you tell them.

received many compliments on her “new do” and no one was the wiser.

It’s been over nine years since my mother completed treatment and is now leading a cancer-free life. Although her own hair has long since grown back, she still often prefers to wear Betty’s wigs on “bad hair days.”

Thank you Betty!

“Hair loss, whether it is the result of illness, the aging process or heredity, can be a traumatic and emotionally draining experience,” says Betty. “We work with people on a daily basis who are facing the issue of hair loss for the first time. Our goal is to help you find the solution that works best for you and do so in a caring way that makes you realize that you are not alone.”

There are wonderful testimonials from longtime customers on her web site (missionviejowigs. com), but for me, the best testament to Betty’s genuine, caring nature came from a source closer to home.

When my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer six years ago, there were so many aspects of what she was facing - including the side effects associated wit chemotherapy treatment – that were out of our control. But my mother’s appearance was something she felt she could dictate. We knew she would lose her hair, but she was determined not to “look like a sick person.”

From the moment my mother met Betty, she knew she had found the right place and more importantly, the right person to help her. Betty shared so many stories of survival – of longtime customers and friends who fought a similar battle and won. Her warm embrace and inspired  hope and help steel her resolve to maintain a positive, fighting attitude when she was diagnosed with lung cancer.

The wig Betty selected was the perfect color and style for my mother’s face (and head) shape. The wig was so natural looking that my mother
