In Greek Mythology, Titans ruled long before the gods existed. Behemoths, they opened the world for what was to come. Today, we know a varied few as true titans: of industry, literature, music, mathematics, sport.

it Marlowe, The Beatles, Einstein, Teemu Selanne (for the Orange County natives). Ken Earwood might not be on your shortlist yet, but as the President of Titan Financial and Insurance Services, his expertise is of the influence you’ll want when looking towards retirement.

“We make sure each person that comes to see us has a plan in place to ensure they have funds that will last the rest of their life," he says. “You don’t have to live paycheck to paycheck forever like when you were first married....you certainly don’t have end up back where you started in retirement.”

Sixteen years ago, Ken started Titan Financial & Insurance Services, Inc. in Huntington Beach and has operated in the ensuing years since in the same location. But the journey to opening his own firm began more than two decades ago, with simple work ethic.

Much like the world-builders, “my parents taught me everything about starting from the ground up. My Dad was an electrical engineer, and worked for the same company for 48 years. My mom was an entrepreneur.

Everything was earned.” A graduate from Long Beach State with a degree in Business Marketing, Ken jumped into the industry feet first, with a job at one of the nation’s largest brokerage firms. With his college sweetheart by his side, loving his day-to-day was easy, and remains so today. Without her support, we couldn’t have come this far.

Ken meets with his clients annually, keeping them on the right track, ensuring each allocation is in the proper place, and that individual checklist items are taken care of: life insurance, investment taxes, retirement income planning, chronic care planning and Legacy/Wealth transfer planning with tax-free death benefits. At every stage, he is there to meet your needs.

Getting started, accumulating wealth, getting ready to distribute it over your retired years, or even pass onto loved ones. There isn’t much they can’t cover, and the pride Ken takes in his client services shows. Most firms simply drill into accumulation, “they don’t bet on safety in retirement and distribution. Putting up numbers on the overall market is all well and good, but how do you make sure you’re not going to come up short in the long run?”

“Everyone remembers what it’s like not to have money. Like when you were a young married couple just starting out. We had nothing to begin with, but we had each other and our work ethic.” The work at Titan changes constantly, but their number one priority is ensuring that the biggest fear in financial planning never comes to fruition for any of their clients: that you outlive your money.

“My kids are so important to me - and I want to leave them a legacy they’re proud of as well," says Ken. "I have two sons and a daughter, and it is incredibly valuable for them to see a balanced book in the making, so they have something to model.”

City of Hope’s Highly Specialized and Compassionate Care Transforms Grateful Patient’s Breast Cancer Journey Sarah Sanders wasn’t shocked when she was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 41 in September 2015. In fact, she expected it.

T

hat’s because Sanders has a strong family history of the disease on her father’s side. Her paternal grandmother died at age 35 from breast cancer, an aunt passed away at age 50, and another aunt was diagnosed in her 60s and successfully treated. This knowledge made all the difference in Sanders’ approach to her breast health.

would've gone through hell, and it would have been unnecessary in my case,” Sanders said. “He represents everything City of Hope stands for.”

Another thing that made all the difference in her breast cancer care was her choice of oncologist, Wade Smith, M.D., who specializes in breast cancer treatment at City of Hope Newport Beach Fashion Island. After her tumor was removed, Dr. Smith performed cutting-edge genomic testing that determined chemotherapy wasn’t necessary. Sanders said that when Dr. Smith told her the news, it was the only time she cried.

Sanders recognizes how important it is that her tumor was discovered early. Sanders’ family history caught the attention of her OB/ GYN, who referred her for genetic and other testing. Sanders learned that she had the ATM mutation that increased her cancer risk. Then an MRI revealed a small tumor in its early stages, close to her armpit, that may not have been caught with a traditional mammogram. Because of the gene mutation and her family history, Sanders chose to have a double mastectomy.

Recuperating from the procedure was challenging. Pre-diagnosis, Sanders led a take-charge lifestyle. For Sanders, the most “life-changing aspect” of breast cancer was letting someone else take care of her – specifically, her mom, Teri, who basically moved into Sanders’ home to help her.

Between the mastectomy, reconstructive surgery, an infection, and a hysterectomy, Sanders had six surgeries within one year. During this time, she was referred to Jeffrey Weitzel, M.D., a City of Hope clinical geneticist who studies the ATM mutation and took her care “to a level no one else can match.”

“First, it made me aware of other cancer risks I have because of the mutation,” Sanders said. “More important is the peace of mind, knowing my care is with the ‘A’ team. I am with the institution that's going to have the most cutting-edge technology

I am frequently asked by my patients if their diet can impact their urinary system. This is particularly relevant with today’s popular diets such as Keto, Zone, Raw Food, Paleo, Intermittent Fasting and many others.

I

advise my patients that it is best to familiarize yourself with any possible side effects, including ones that can affect your urinary system before you decide if it’s right for you.

For example, the foundation of the Keto diet is adherence to an extremely low-carb, high-fat diet in order to put your body into a metabolic state called ketosis. This process helps your body to be more efficient at burning fat. However, you should be aware of the known effects of having your body go into a metabolic ketosis state. At the onset of the diet, the effect of lowering carbohydrates stimulates the body to burn ketones for energy instead of glucose. Once the body is in ketosis some people may experience headaches, dehydration, 14

irritability, constipation, nausea, and fatigue.

Additionally, there are potential urological problems. High fat intake may be a factor that promotes prostate cancer development. Dehydration puts stress on the kidneys and increases the risk of kidney stones of all types. The high intake of animal proteins makes your urine more acidic and increases uric acid levels.

This combination makes you more susceptible to uric acid kidney stones as well as gout.

The take away message is that there is a potential for unanticipated side effects in most diets. Whether a diet is right for you depends on many factors ranging from your basic me-

tabolism to the presence of many coexisting medical conditions such as kidney disease, high blood pressure, kidney stones and diabetes.

When I was younger, my Mom loved to read me the book “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie.” The plot essentially revolves around an ever-growing list of to-do’s that had to be accomplished, all set into motion by the simple act of giving a mouse a cookie. Executive Chef/Partner Rainer Schwarz’ incredibly diverse menu features specialties for every palate, which is perfect for my strictly meat-and-potatoes husband and the inner seafood-ie in me. Dishes are defined by creatively inspired California cuisine simply prepared with a focus on the freshest of ocean fare and flavorful seasonal ingredients. The trick here is in deciding between each of the mouthwatering starters, salads, small plates and entrees.

The pan-fried brussel sprouts enhanced with lemon, balsamic and cranberries are not-to-be missed and it’s equally obvious as to why the thinly sliced yellowtail hamachi with Santa Barbara uni and paired with apple citrus vinaigrette and blood orange is such a popular starter. The carmelized butternut gnocchi with sage brown butter and pork speck was literally melt-in-your mouth rich and delicious.

his past year, I started rereading a collection of classics. As I began working through Jane Austen’s masterpieces, I decided it’d be a lovely and delicious (pun intended) endeavor to apply the same concept to a “collection” of dining experiences worth writing home about.

To be sure, there is no shortage of exceptional establishments in Orange County upon which to embark on such a sojourn. One such standout is Driftwood Kitchen in Laguna Beach the premier waterfront, ocean-to-table dining experience of the freshest and finest seafood, steaks and handshucked oysters, alongside handcraft36

My new favorite meal is Driftwood’s pan seared diver scallops paired with fregola pasta, cauliflower, Moroccan salsa and marcona almonds while my husband was thrilled with his cooked-to-perfection Double R Ranch prime ribeye accompanied by a creamy parsnip puree, green beans, sweet garlic and pickled pearl onion.

It’s easy to call food honest, when it tastes like it comes right off your best friend’s table - but certainly hard to beat when exemplary service and value extend to each inspired detail of the dining experience. Even Jane would agree.

here are a few places in the world that I’ve truly relaxed outside my own home. Believe me, it is a very short list. For newer homes, Paul and his crew can use a basic primer that dries a bit faster allowing installation of a garage floor in as little as one day!

The color chips that give the Perkins floor its legendary appearance are sandwiched between this primer and finish coat. Perkins carries the widest selection of colors and sizes in the market and uses a ‘full chip broadcast’, not a partial sprinkling of chips like many of its competitors. “The full chip broadcast gives the floor a consistent appearance and makes the floor much more durable and helps hide dirt better than the partial broadcast finish” says Paul.

ission Viejo Wigs is truly a family business. Not in the traditional sense, where its owners and operators share the same genes. But rather in such a way that every person who has walked through Owner Betty Darroch’s doors in the 30+ years she has been in operation immediately felt like a member of Darroch’s extended family.

As a professional hair and wig stylist since 1962, Betty began her career at CBS where her résumé reads like a celebrity screenplay starring the coifs of a veritable “who’s who” of Hollywood: Ann Margaret, Carol Lawrence, the Midnight Specials and the Sonny & Cher Show. She went on to work for the Hallelujah Hollywood Show at the MGM Hotel in Las Vegas.

But it wasn’t until she opened her own business in Mission Viejo that she felt as though she were “truly doing God’s work.”

Her clients today include people who are experiencing hair loss due to chemotherapy treatment, alopecia or other medical conditions. Betty specializes in wigs, hairpieces and toupees for women, men and children and carries only the highest quality brands. Each wig or hairpiece is custom fit to the client for the most natural look and feel – no one will know you’re wearing a wig unless you tell them.

“Hair loss, whether it is the result of illness, the aging process or heredity, can be a traumatic and emotionally draining experience,” says Betty.

“We work with people on a daily basis who are facing the issue of hair loss for the first time.

Our goal is to help you find the solution that works best for you and do so in a caring way that makes you realize that you are not alone.”

There are wonderful testimonials from longtime customers on her web site (missionviejowigs. com), but for me, the best testament to Betty’s genuine, caring nature came from a source closer to home.

When my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer six years ago, there were so many aspects of what she was facing - including the side effects associated wit chemotherapy treatment – that were out of our control. But my mother’s appearance was something she felt she could dictate. We knew she would lose her hair, but she was determined not to “look like a sick person.”

From the moment my mother met Betty, she knew she had found the right place and more importantly, the right person to help her. Betty shared so many stories of survival – of longtime customers and friends who fought a similar battle and won. Her warm embrace and inspired hope and help steel her resolve to maintain a positive, fighting attitude when she was diagnosed with lung cancer.
