Dear Reader:
This issue marks Community Publications’ 17th anniversary - a fact that I am both immeasurably proud of and humbled by. Speaking for the entire Community Publications team, I can’t believe so much time has passed since we launched our first community magazine (HB Magazine) in 2003. We are so blessed to have been able to thrive and grow over these many years and will strive to continue to serve as a resource to our readership.
2020 will forever be a year for the history books. Whichever way you slice it, the 10 months we’ve spent so far have been, for most Americans, some of the strangest of our entire lives. Some have been at home for more continuous weeks than ever before. Some haven’t seen loved ones since spring. Social unrest, a global pandemic, and a Presidential election all loom large over our heads. I’ve even spent a considerable amount of time wondering what hobbies my neighbors have learned in the past few months. If you were to look on any social media platform, it looks a lot like sourdough starters, backyard crafting, TikTok challenges, and random woodworking projects. In reality, what I’m

realizing is that we’ve all learned that we contain an allotment of durability that we weren’t aware of before.
If you’re one of the people who has taken up woodworking in your spare time, you might find that like others who have come before you, there are specific types of wood that work better than others: walnut, for example: extremely strong, stable, and shock resistant. Or ash, a carpenters favorite, for its toughness and flexibility. Traits that we’ve also come to see present in so many of our friends and neighbors, and especially my fellow small business owners. We’ve had to modify our entire lives over the better part of the last year, but the challenges have only served to highlight the way many of us already approach our respective industries. With resolve, courage, and the ability to pivot at a moment’s notice to adapt to a changing market or our client’s needs.
The very definition of flexibility resounds in my ears even as I consider the impact that COVID-19 has had on my community and those around me: ‘the ability to be easily modified to respond to altered circumstances or conditions’. We can’t open the doors? We’ll shop outside. We can’t serve inside? Al fresco it is. Online shop? Done.

Curbside pickup?
Check. Our resilience is what first made us small business owners. We peered into the market and saw that we were needed: our products, our services, our personalities and strengths. And our resilience is what will sustain us through this, and the next chapter to follow. Perhaps we’ll have some new hobbies to boast about as well.
I hope you enjoy this edition and as always, please don't hesitate to contact me directly with any questions, comments or ways in which we may be of service.

Absolutely Fabulous
The Happiest Place in HB
the Holidays! for
By Jody Robinson
The nature of gift purchasing has changed greatly since the advent of the internet. How has Absolutely Fabulous stayed above
the fray and blossomed while the rest of the gift industry flounders?
“That’s easy,” responds Diane Silverstein, owner of the iconic Huntington
Beach-based Absolutely Fabulous gift boutique, “quality, selection, price range, and ease of shopping.” After many visits to her “absolutely fabulous” gift and décor shop, I would have to agree. “Plus – we ship world-wide, so you can mail your stuff right from here!”
While the internet excels at making home shopping the easiest experience, when you know exactly what you’re looking for, much of holiday gift-giving starts with “who is this for, and how much do I want to spend on them?” Absolutely Fabulous makes this type of shopping easy with their “you know the personality, we know the product” approach to holiday gift-giving. “You see,” Diane explains in her charming English accent, “we spend hours and hours searching for the best new products offered in the gift industry. When our customers come in with their lists, we walk them around and point out options that our customers would never have found in an internet search.”
Diane is not kidding on that last point. The variety and uniqueness of products at Absolutely Fabulous is as-

tounding: hand-made jewelry, Miche Bag purses (the ones where you just drop the “insides” of your purse into a new shell, rather than having to dump all of your stuff out!), $10 silk scarves, old-school shaving kits for men, a “Daddy’s Tool Bag” that includes diaper changing equipment, and instructional DVD, face mask and other funny items, rare paintings by successful artists, large crystal chandeliers, crystal perfume bottles, stuffed animal baby bottle covers, piggy banks for kids,

wedding party gifts, rare Disney art and collectibles, holiday-themed decor and gifts, Christmas decorations that range from very inexpensive bottle stoppers and tree decorations to 6-foot high collectible Santa dolls. Ab Fab really does cover the gamut of gifts for anyone: “from birth to death and everything in-between is our moniker” Diane proudly states. I tend to agree.
This holiday season, find out why Absolutely Fabulous is so appropriately-named. Connect with Diane and the crew at Absolutely Fabulous located at 6026 Warner Avenuein Huntington Beach, call (714) 842-1608 or visit www.absolutelyfabulous1.com

virtually every design concept imaginable - from Coastal Living, Tropical, Asian or Desert Living to Contemporary/ Urban, Mediterranean/Spanish and more. And the company also works closely with designers and their clients.
But beyond the physical product however, is the intangible and invaluable aspect to California Silk’s continued success over the years: customer connection.
“Our people have been with the company since the beginning, or close to it, and are true artisans,” says Mattie. “Known for their creativity, they do everything from residential and office renovations to major showroom displays for suppliers throughout the world.”
Bringing the Beauty of Nature Inside California Silk Plant Co.
By Jody Robinson
Things change. It’s inevitable. But some things simply evolve from good to great. Better to best. It can be hard to find a business that weathers change in such a way, especially through recessions, divestments, and change in leadership. California Silk Plant Company is just such a business. Founded in the mid 1980’s, it has since seen a few different storefronts. Settled now in its present location on La Paz Road in Laguna Niguel, the business profits from its membership in the Laguna Niguel Chamber of Commerce, especially through the recent upheaval from COVID-19 and its fallout. But from the very beginning, its emphasis has been on providing topline quality: both in their product offerings and their customer service. After all, as Co-owner Mattie Seiwert says, “only happy customers come back.”
California Silk Plant Co. offers only the finest, most natural and lifelike artificial replica trees, botanicals, floral arrangements and unique accessories for the most elegant and admired upscale home and commercial interiors. An unmatched design team offers creative design assistance or customized products as needed for stunning results in

Mattie and her husband Joe aren’t strangers to hard work. After corporate careers (Mattie in Aerospace Facilities Management and Joe in the Chemical and Environmental Control industries), they sought to find a new endeavor that would capitalize on Mattie’s degree in Fine Arts and Interior Design coupled with Joe’s engineering background and Midwestern work ethic. Both proved invaluable when the pair landed at the crux of plant-based landscaping and design.
“We didn’t want to just retire and sit in front of the television all day,” says Joe. “A smaller, niche market was the ticket, and when the opportunity came along in 2005 to acquire ownership of California Silk Plant Co. from its original (and very successful!) founders, we jumped at it.”
On a personal level, owning and operating California Silk Plant Co. is both an escape and an opportunity. “Unique days and the opportunity to create in a family atmosphere” as a couple are among the ways in which the Seiwerts keep the work interesting. So it isn’t a surprise that the fun and creativity haven’t stopped in the last fifteen years. Needless to say, knowing that their orchids, palms, fiddle-leaf figs and other trees, succulents, and more bring everyday happiness to their clients also helps drive their success. It’s no small feat to “bring the beauty of nature inside”: and Mattie and Joe are up to the challenge. After all, everything they’ve done up till now has led them to make your home, office, and commercial interiors as stylish and elegant as you’ve always wanted.

Morena Tile & Stone Your Hidden Gem
the body and after 35 years on his paws and knees, John decided it was time to pursue his dream of owning a tile store.

in South Orange County
Pssst. Hey, you, yes you – it is me the Cat. I knew being on the cover in my Sunday best would get your attention - and now that I have it - I’d like to tell you a little about my good friend John Schrab and his tile store - Morena Tile & Stone. John’s family has been setting tile for four generations. His Great Grandpa Tat, – installed
the Mosaic State Seal in the Arizona State Capitol building in 1921. His Grandpa – Earnest, was a tile and stone Craftsmen with over a hundred men working for him. His Dad John was a rodeo cowboy, tile and stone contractor and setter who passed his knowledge down to him. As one can imagine, setting tile takes its toll on
John took over the Morena Tile San Juan Capistrano in 2014 and over the last six years he has put together a real sweetheart of a showroom … 5000 square feet of fun, imaginative and up-to-date tile and stone including porcelain, granite, marble, travertine, limestone and quartz from over seventy – five vendors. Add a few fun-loving customer service-oriented teammates, and a cat as a mascot, and poof you have got yourself one hell a dream come true.
Homeowners, designers, and contractors alike love the selection and the convenience of shopping locally in a store where everybody knows your name. Stop in and have a bite of lunch, a cup of coffee (or have a nip of something a little stronger if you get my drift…) while you look around and talk to one of the designers who are at the ready to give you ideas to
get your project started, help with design and tile selection in order to bring your project to life. They know the importance of treating customers like family and handling your dream project as if it were their own.
Morena Tile & S tone:
So, what are you waiting for?! Head on over and have a look-see for yourself – huge selection of tile from mild to wild you can find it at Morena Tile and Stone. Or call first and reserve some time with a designer (no charge for you, tell them “The Cat sent you.”)
“At Morena Tile & Stone we specialize in imagination and fun.”
“As a family owned business, we focus on customer service and getting to know our clients while we help bring their projects to life. From mild to wild, traditional to modern we’ll help you find the perfect tile and stone for your dream kitchen or bath.”
Cat Tip: If you need a fabricator for your countertops, or someone to install your tile, they have a fabrication shop on site with crews of experienced master craftsmen who have been with John’s family for decades. You will love how they combine their cutting-edge machine technology with old-world craftsmanship - which allows John the motto, “ we make things pretty everyday.”
Mr. John Schrab, a fourth-generation stone fabrication and tile contractor took over Morena Tile five years ago and fulfilled his dream of owning his own tile store. Since then, Morena Tile has become a trusted resource for local contractors, designers and homeowners supplying natural stone, porcelain tile and engineered stone to projects both big and small in scope. Offering an abundant 5000/sf showroom with over fifty top manufacturers to choose from and a top-notch staff, Morena tile has reached the pinnacle amongst the ubiquitous onslaught of “big box design” options.
“Treating our customers like family is the first step. We invite all our customers to our showroom to look around and meet our staff, discuss their project or join us for a little lunch and conversation around our kitchen island. We’re here to help.” Says John.

Morena tile’s showroom proudly displays one of the largest selections of tile, natural and engineered stone in South Orange County. Morena Tile’s designers are on hand to help customers navigate the myriad of choices to get their project started - and serve as a resource every step of the way from concept to completion.
Whether your Kitchen, Bathroom, Flooring , Fireplace or BBQ project calls for granite, marble, travertine, limestone or Natural Quartzite, you can find it all at
& Stone.

Why Roth IRA Conversions May Now Be Advantageous
Thanks to a couple of factors, some investors are thinking about this move before 2020 ends.
Provided by Ken Earwood
Roth IRAs have attracted retirement savers since their introduction in 1998. They offer the potential for tax-free retirement income, provided Internal Revenue Service rules are followed.
Do Roth IRAs seem even more attractive these days? Perhaps. You can cite two factors: current tax rates and the passage of the Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement (SECURE) Act.
Roth IRAs differ from traditional IRAs. Typically, distributions from traditional IRAs must start once you reach age 72, and the money distributed is taxed as ordinary income. When distributions are taken before age 59½, they may be subject to a 10% federal income tax penalty (although, the CARES Act does allow for some exceptions to those penalties for the 2020 tax year).1
On the other hand, if you are the original owner of a Roth IRA, you do not have to start taking distributions at age 72. And if you are least 59½ years old and have owned the Roth IRA for at least five years, any distributions you take may be exempt from federal taxes.2
Remember, this article is for informational purposes only. It does not replace real-life financial or tax advice. Be sure to consult a tax or financial professional before making any decisions regarding your traditional IRA or Roth IRA.
Converting a Traditional IRA to a Roth IRA is a taxable event. You pay

ordinary income tax on the converted amount. And federal tax rates are now near historic lows, thanks to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, and they are scheduled to stay there through 2025.3
The SECURE Act ruled that a nonspouse beneficiary of an IRA must completely withdraw that inherited IRA balance within 10 years rather than over the beneficiary’s lifetime (the previous guideline). The distribu-
tion can be taken as a lump sum or in payments over the 10 years. There is no set guideline other than it must be empty in 10 years.
The rules are similar for a non-spousal beneficiary of a Roth IRA. The new owner must deplete the inherited IRA in 10 years. However, there may not be any federal income taxes on the withdrawn amounts, assuming I.R.S. rules have been respected.3
A Roth conversion may be appealing purely from an income tax perspective. Taxable incomes have declined for many households due to recent economic slowdown, resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, and it might put some traditional IRA owners in lower tax brackets this year. Add in the fact that federal income tax rates are low, to begin with, and 2020 could be a good time to go Roth.3
A Roth conversion may also play a role in an estate strategy. If you inherit an IRA today, you don’t have to take annual Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) from it in 2020, thanks to a provision in the SECURE Act. However, you have to make sure that IRA is empty within 10 years.3
So, if you inherit a Roth IRA, you could give the assets in that Roth IRA a chance to grow and compound for another decade without tapping them. You could draw down the entire balance at once after 10 additional years of potential growth and compounding. Not so, in the case of a traditional IRA, however; that lump-sum withdrawal would be taxed as regular income.3
Remember that any Roth IRA conversion is a taxable event, and these conversions cannot no longer be undone. Also, keep in mind that tax rules change from year to year, and future tax changes may affect IRAs. There is no guarantee that the tax treatment of Roth and traditional IRAs will remain the same in the future.3
Are you ready to talk about converting to a Roth? Not sure of you should and why? Call me to discuss if it makes sense for you and your family…more importantly for your legacy planning.

Home Safety Advisors: Helping Seniors Live Safely in Their Own Home Longer!
By Jody Robinson
By the time my friend’s grand- mother passed away at 92, she had fallen six times. Two of those falls resulted in broken bones - once, her hip. Horrifying, to find oneself in that position. Tripped up by your walker or the corner of a rug. Often, a wet bathroom or kitchen floor.
She was in a home for five out of the six falls, and still, it took some time to respond, get her stabilized, diagnosed, and fully recovered. Falls, my friend and herfamily quickly learned, are the leading cause of injury related deaths in Americans aged 65 and older. She didn’t end up passing because of a slip up directly, but her bones cer tainly didn’t give her a pass either, in those last days.
Home Safety Advisor’s President Dave Riggle has a similar story, as do so many around the country. His mother passed from a fall in her bathroom, and was the direct im petus for his business beginnings. “None of us five kids had any idea she struggled, or we would have fixed it immediately. I have skin in this game - I don’t want anyone else to suffer like my mother did.” While other home improvement companies may include walk-in tubs as a part of their overall offerings, safe bathrooms are the entire focus and area of specialization for Dave and his team of profession als. So much so that Dave
personally interviewed over 400 seniors about the difficulties they were experiencing in order to provide the best possible product to meet their needs.
While the business formally began in Indiana, the team at Home Safety Advisors expanded their operation into the Southern California market a year ago and are thrilled to have met with such a positive response and feedback to their scope of
services. Many clients come to them via word- of-mouth. And it’s not hard to see why. Installing something that could literally mean the difference between serious injury or not is no small feat. And something that Dave’s team takes extremely seriously. All of their walk-in tubs and showers are made in

Women’s Perspectives and Behavior on Bladder Control
ProblemsAre you ‘Coping’ with Symptoms?
By Robert Pugach, MD
Bladder control problems are one of the most common health concerns for women. More than 50 million American women experience one or more bladder control symptoms like frequency, urgency, stress or urge urinary incontinence and nocturia (nighttime urination), yet they often are too embarrassed to inquire about treatment or are unaware of possible bladder control solutions.
Astudy conducted by the American Academy of Family Practice surveyed women and conducted focus groups to understand womens’ perspectives and coping mechanisms to manage their symptoms. The focus groups revealed that many women were not aware that overactive bladder (OAB) is a chronic condition. In the study, approximately 30% of respondents in the survey felt uncomfortable talking to their doctor about their condition. The study also showed that for women who did speak with their doctors, their stress-related symptoms were described more fully than urge-related symptoms. Another significant finding was that the women felt their OAB medication was ineffective, and half (50%) stopped taking their medication within 1 year!
At Pacific Coast Urology Medical Center’s Female Bladder Control Center of Excellence, both Evans Tran, PA, and I understand our pa-
tients’ embarrassment and reluctance to discuss this issue. We spend the necessary time to communicate with our patients, help them feel comfortable discussing bladder control issues and educate them on the different types of bladder control problems and their symptoms.
We explain to women that bladder control problems can be referred to as incontinence when there is uncontrolled leakage of urine that occurs with movement, exercise, coughing, sneezing, laughing or sudden strong urges to urinate that cannot be stopped. These types of incontinence include, stress, urge, mixed, overflow and intrinsic sphincter deficiency.
Bladder control problems can be present without urine leakage. This is called an overactive bladder (OAB) condition. Symptoms include, frequent urges to urinate, feeling an urgent need to urinate and nighttime urination. OAB affects s a woman’s
sleep and daily activities. It can literally control your life.
We can help! We encourage women to stop being embarrassed and obtain a precise diagnosis and treatment plan that includes treatment options other than medications and just “coping” with your symptoms. Schedule a confidential consultation to learn about the variety of advanced non-surgical treatment options, including acupuncture, biofeedback, Botox® injections, Interstim® and pelvic floor rehabilitation exercises.

Robyne’s Nest Named Assembly District
74 Nonprofit of the Year for Huntington Beach Organization Honored for
California Nonprofits Day
Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris announced her selection of Robyne’s Nest as the 74th Assembly District’s 2020 Non-Profit of the Year for Huntington Beach. Robyne’s Nest provides at-risk and homeless high school students, who have little to no parental support and are drug/alcohol free, the support and resources to complete
high school and get set on a path to self-sufficiency through college, trades school or the military.
Robyne’s Nest partners with the Huntington Beach and Newport Mesa local school districts to eliminate barriers and burdens for homeless and high-risk students while in high school and college. Robyne’s Nest
volunteers provide financial assistance, food and basic needs, mental health counseling, a suite of life skills classes, and even transportation so the students can focus on successfully completing their education.
“We are thrilled that our work and vision is being recognized and honored,” said Robyne Wood, Founder and Executive Director. “Our team of volunteers at Robyne’s Nest work hard to make sure students are given what they need to erase barriers and the dedication shown during COVID-19 was above and beyond. Helping students that are unseen and generally fall through the cracks because there are no other resources for them is what we do best. We are dedicated to working harder to reach more students in need as this year finishes and the next begins.”
Robyne’s Nest will be recognized in a digital ceremony on October 13, 2020.

Make Money from Your Property with Point Design, Inc.
By Jody Robinson
As we look ahead to our retirement years, my husband has long touted the importance of creating passive revenue streamsin short, it’s money that requires almost no effort to earn, and moreso, even less effort to maintain.
Which is why when friends and family who have the space in their back or side yard ask him for advice, he will invariably steer them to consider the idea of building an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) on their property.
Haven’t heard of ADUs? They’re the most innovative and frankly, affordable, option to add housing and create additional income for homeowners right here in already crowded SoCal. By using land that you already own, you can create a passive income.
Accessory Dwelling Units are a specialty of Point Design, Inc., a structural engineering and construction firm that has been helping homeowners maximize their home and land’s value since 2013. Providing efficient, valuable additions and new construction with an emphasis on aesthetics and budgetary restrictions isn’t necessar-
ily easy, but it’s one thing Company Founder Jay Hosseinzadeh and his team of professionals do exceedingly well. They will design and build an ADU (rental unit, office, granny unit, casita) on your lot that you can then rent out. What’s that worth? Well, let’s do the math: the average monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Orange County and Los Angeles is $1,800.
If you were to spend $150,000 to build a 600 s.f., one bedroom ADU and collect $1,800 per month rent, it would take about 7.5 years to recoup
the cost. Not bad! If you were going to finance an ADU, it will take longer to recoup the cost of your investment (please consult your loan broker).
With a background in structural engineering and construction for over thirty years, Jay has been the engineer of record for a large number of commercial, retail, hospitality, institutional, industrial and residential buildings and government projects throughout California and across the nation.
“Everything I’ve learned since my early days at California State University, Los Angeles adds up to responsible, tailored, communicative solutions,” he says. “No two markets are the same, be it retail or residential, and so we strive to do more with less, building open and honest relationships along the way with our clients.”
Point Design’s mission is pretty simple, and all points lead to adding value to their building projects. Being client-centered means they communicate to and remain with their customer the entire length of the project, from design, to development, to scheduling, to project completion.
Though ADUs have been called by many names; granny flats, in-law units, cottages; Jay’s expertise lies in developing cost-effective, structurally sound, earthquake resistant designs which don’t require additional land, major infrastructure, extra parking spots, or elevators. Keep your family close, let your parents age in place comfortably, or rent it out: however you slice it, Point Design Inc. is here to help. Regardless of whether your goal is to share space independently from others or increase your monthly revenue, ADUs will maximize your property’s value. Point Design, Inc.

Living the Suite Life at San Diego’s Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa

By Jody Robinson
At press time, there are over 35 counties in the state of California on Governor Newsom’s COVID-19 watch list. The phrase “watch list” doesn’t necessarily conjure visions of an idyllic vacation destination. Instead, it brings to mind images of a black and white FBI most wanted poster, plastered on community message boards and local law enforcement Twitter feeds. There is a raging debate about reopening schools in the fall, whether masks and social distancing will be enough to protect the kiddos walking out of their private quarantines and into a shared space with 30 other children. We’re headed for a fall full of masks and hand sanitizer, instead of pumpkin patches and spiced lattes in our carpool cupholders.
And yet the gorgeous summer weather is here. The beaches beck-

on. I know, because I’m feeling it personally. As happy as our home is, it’s always nice to have a change of scenery, perhaps even more so today than ever. A familiar refrain of family and friends these last few months is to keep in perspective the silver lining in this unprecedent-
ed time of staying close to home. However redundant it might sound, having more time as a family means we can spend more time as a family. And San Diego’s perfect climate, inviting beaches, abundant outdoor activities, and unbelievable accommodations make for an easily acces-
sible, atmospheric time away - even if only for a few days.
When researching options, we were hoping it wasn’t too tall an order to arrange an accommodation that was on the water, amenity-rich with family-friendly recreational opportunities (boat, jet ski or kayak rental - and a preferable heated - swimming pool were on our wish list). Hitting the mark on all counts, the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa stood out as

our family’s first choice for a proverbial “end of summer/ease into fall” family-friendly staycation.
Dedicated to providing the most tropical and luxurious resort stay that safety and proper sanitation practices can deliver right now, the Polynesian-themed resort is a tropical hideaway that offers up an ambiance and experience that feels as though you’re on a Hawaiian island vacation sans the five-hour flight.
Cool ocean breezes, warm, friendly hospitality, sunny days, starlit nights, verdant greenery, tiki torches, waterfalls and ponds full of colorful koi, majestic palms swaying in the afternoon breeze and beautiful exotic birds that strike up conversation with passerby - these are among the things guests can expect here. That’s before mentioning the sparkling Pacific and long
stretches of white sand beaches literally steps away. The Catamaran’s tropical vibe artfully blends the Aloha spirit where each of the property’s 310 luxurious suites, studios and hotel rooms feature a private balcony or patio with breathtaking views of Mission Bay, the Pacific Beach neighborhood and coastline, or the property’s lush tropical gardens.
CULINARY DELIGHTS
The resort’s signature restaurant, Oceana Coastal Kitchen features chef-driven, California cuisine and a modern, ocean-inspired design and ambiance defined by sweeping panoramic waterfront views (its adjacent Moray’s lounge is characterized by flickering flames from tiki torches and lava rock fire pits). Ranging from casual and family-friendly to upscale, the space includes several distinct ocean-inspired dining areas (the quartz-topped cold bar is embedded with mother of pearl and sea glass; the focal point of the main dining room is an impressive 800-gallon aquarium. In today’s cautionary environment,
Oceana is serving Executive Chef Steven Riemer’s playful interpretation of classic dishes outdoors with patio dine-in service (seating is limited, so reservations are recommended).
Our family is represented on all culinary fronts. I am a seafood aficionado. My husband, Tim, is a meat-and-potatoes man. Our 12-year-old daughter has a pretty adventurous palate, but her 13-year-old brother always opts for traditional kid-friendly fare. There was something for everyone on Oceana Coastal Kitchen’s menu - abundant seafood selections, beef and chicken entrees and a variety of delicious flatbreads, including a sweet fennel sausage and classic pepperoni.
For my part, I went with seafood from start to finish - the hamachi crudo with white miso, micro cilantro and jalapeño from the cold bar was a wonderfully flavorful appetizer, fol-

lowed by seared scallops paired with toasted couscous, preserved lemon and mint. Tim’s grilled-to-perfection Harris Ranch ribeye arrived with Yukon gold mashed potatoes and broccolini, preserved lemon and chili with bordelaise sauce.
OUTDOOR ENDEAVORS
We spent the entire day outdoorsstarting with a spin around the bay aboard a 19’ Rinker rented through Action Sport Rentals (www.actionsportrentals.com), San Diego’s premier land and water sports rental company with multiple locations, including at the pier at the Catamaran Resort Hotel & Spa. The powerboat we chose is a fast, fun craft that’s also a super comfortable ride for up to seven passengers - while boaters stay within the bay, our experience alternated between a leisurely cruise in the channels an an exhilarating ride at speeds topping 40 mph.

Sunbathing and paddleboarding, relaxing by the pool, or simply cruising down the boardwalk definitely make my top-ten-distractions-from-homeschooling list. Choose a garden suite or tower escape at Catamaran Resort Hotel, grab a coffee or cocktail, and treat the entire family to some of the finest cuisine in America’s Finest City. We can all agree that times are challenging, and certainly, they may not
clear up shortly as we’d all prefer. But who’s to say we can’t add a little joy to our definition of “new normal”?

Coding for Kids
By Mark Freedkin, Southern California Regional Director, theCoderSchool
Technology plays an extremely important part in our everyday culture, and the complexity and sophistication of that technology is growing faster than any time in human history. Coding (also known as “computer programming”) is at the core of that technology, and it refers to converting a real-world problem or challenge into the equivalent logical step-by-step set of instructions that a computer needs to perform in order to solve that problem or challenge.
It is important to expose and encourage our next generation to learn the fundamentals of coding. Coding is becoming a standard offering at many public schools, with more advanced learning opportunities available at a number of private after-school programs. Learning to code helps prepare students for the coming onslaught of technology. It also helps them to develop logical thinking and problem solving skills, both of which will transfer into all other academic areas.
There are many after-school program choices available, and each of them have their own unique characteristics and price-points. As good parents, we want to ensure that we are giving our kids the skills and tools to be successful in their education and their life. However, we should not base our decisions solely on the price of those third-party programs. As the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. Of course, whichever program you choose must be affordable for your family.
theCoderSchool is a nationwide franchise that has nearly 50 locations around the country, with several locations in Orange County, including Irvine, Mission Viejo, Yorba Linda and Cerritos/La Palma. Of course, with the current COVD-19 pandemic, all of our classes are currently offered virtually on-line, so it doesn’t matter where you live. Your students can attend their weekly coding lessons from the safety and comfort of your own home. You only need a computer with Internet access.
We offer coding lessons with a very low ratio of only two-students-withone-instructor, which allows us to give very focused instruction. We employ a curriculum that is uniquely customized for each student, based on their experience, how they learn, and what they are most interested in learning. We used a combination of fun and engaging real-world projects as the vehicle for teaching, rather than any kind of self-paced on-line program with a fixed curriculum. All of our instructors are Computer Science experts, since they need to understand the technology in order to teach it.
To learn more about our coding lesson programs, you can register for a FREE 30-minute Remote Sample Lesson. It will give you an opportunity to meet our staff, get your questions answered, and see if your student enjoys our teaching methods. Visit our websites (shown below) to register for a free trial lesson.

EVERY TUESDAY
Laid Back Luxury at Estancia La Jolla

By Jody Robinson
Southern California is well known for its gorgeous year-round weather. Truly though, there are few places with as mild and consistently lovely temperatures as La Jolla, a 7-mile oceanfront community jewel just 12 miles north of Downtown San Diego. Almost completely surrounded by beaches and bluffs, La Jolla boasts an everyday average of 70 degrees. Tide pools dot the coast, and the famous La Jolla Playhouse, founded by legendary Hollywood figure Gregory Peck, now lives on the University of California campus, just minutes from some of the best boutique shopping in the area.
A perfect escape from the normal humdrum, the seaside gem has leaned into the rapidly changing “new normal,” and established itself as the California Staycation capitol. At the gorgeous hacienda-style Estancia La Jolla Hotel and Spa, you’ll find that the luxury and joy of being

away from home and taking a moment to reconnect with the ones you love hasn’t changed one bit, even if the guidelines and operations have. Rest assured, in any of the Estancia’s many deluxe guestrooms or suites, that the resort is taking care of every ... well, care during your stay.
If you’ve been here before, your getaway may look a little different, but Estancia welcomes its guests to a “worry-free” experience (visit the web site for detailed information on the property’s rigorous hospitality and health protocols in place in accordance with government stan-

dards). For our part, it was a first-time visit for my husband, Tim, and I ... but after experiencing all that Estancia has to offer, most assuredly won’t be our last.
Beautifully appointed accommodations feature private balconies with picturesque views and patios tucked among lush landscaping for delightful views of Estancia’s gardens, water fountains, stone paths or tranquil pool area. With award-winning botanical gardens defined by nine sprawling acres of bouganvillea, olive trees and impeccably manicured greenery, it’s easy to see why the property has long been a favorite for weddings.
If you’re looking for the chance to slow down, try an “Aroma Flow” yoga class in the garden, splurge on an outdoor massage or simply soak in the sun-drenched saltwater pool for a few hours. Out with the family? Try one of the property’s many garden activities, or explore local La Jolla’s beach coves, tide pools and dining options. When available to operate, a fully equipped fitness center is ready and waiting for the early morning stretch or a late night jog.
Named one of the “World’s Hottest Hotels” and a 2019 Readers’ Choice Award winner by Condé Nast Traveler, the resort’s distinguished dining venues trace its roots to both Napa Valley to the north and Mexico to the
south to serve an array of authentic West Coast cuisine. Sip wines from Trinitas Cellars at Estancia’s wine bar, savor decadent breakfast favorites with Southwest flair at Adobe El Restaurante, or sample Baja coastal-inspired cuisine in a hacienda setting at the resort’s signature restaurant - Mustangs & Burros.
to, street corn salsa, charred lemon and arugula, there were no shortage of options to tempt my palate. A straight meat-and-potatoes man, Tim opted for the grilled-to-perfection hanger steak with wild mushrooms and onions. Fan of chips and salsa as a starter? Not-to-be missed is the eatery’s charred verde salsa and a house-made guacamole.

Sip the night away from a seat at Estancia’s wine bar, savor a cup of coffee and a good read in the garden, take a refreshing dip or bask in the sun poolside with fruity cocktail or fruit-infused water in hand. Al fresco, all luxury, all day.
As a seafood aficionado, I was in seventh heaven with the menu offerings at Mustangs & Burros. From the Baja Shrimp bacon-wrapped and enhanced with tamarind BBQ to the shrimp ceviche and pan-seared salmon which arrives with roasted pota-

CALIFORNIA Adventures Everyday

Exploring La Jolla’s Seven Sea Caves
BY JODY ROBINSON
There is perhaps no more educational and entertaining way to experience the La Jolla Ecological Reserve (the protected part of the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park) than taking part in a kayak tour to explore the gorgeous sea cliffs and renowned Seven Sea Caves. Everyday California came highly recommended as “the” tour to take and it didn’t disappoint.
After getting geared up with helmets and life jackets, it’s was a quick stroll to the foot of Avenida de La Playa at the south end of La Jolla Shores. We kicked off our shoes at the “honor system” beach stand and headed to the water’s edge, where our guide, Trent, engaged the group a quick tutorial on the “do’s and don’ts” of paddling and we were off for the start of our two-hour tour.
I’ve been on many a tour - land and sea - in my life and as amazing as the scenery is, I’ve found that a key component to how much you’ll take away from the experience rests with the knowledge and personality of your guide. We lucked out with Trent - a seasoned enthusiast who has been with the company for six years
- and who proved to be a wealth of information about the environs while ensuring our group a safe, fun and highly entertaining experience.
Along the way paddling out to the caves (including Sunny Jim’s Cave and the Arch Cave), we saw amazing sandstone and limestone formations, sea lions sunbathing on the rocks, caught sight of bright orange Garibaldi beneath the surface (our California State fish) and even learned a bit about the kelp beds outside the caves. The water wasn’t quite clear enough to see the leopard sharks that Trent assured us were swimming around by the scores beneath us.

When conditions permit, Everyday Callifornia guides help guests paddle inside Clams’ Cave - the only cave visible from land. Trent jumped into the water and literally guided our kayaks (two at a time) into the cave, keeping a running commentary on what to expect and introducing our kids to a giant sea lion inside that Trent surmised was the victor in a recent sea lion battle for this premium position.
On the way back to our starting off point, Trent stopped at the “perfect” spot to slide off the kayak for a quick swim in the 70-degree waters. Our 13-year-old son didn’t have to be asked twice and was the first one to jump in. Then it was back to the shoreline, where guides were waiting to help us “catch” a wave in. All in all ... a truly excellent adventure and one I’d highly recommend.

Paris in a Cup: French Flair,
Lunch Fare, Great Gifts and Holiday
“SpecialTeas!”
Paris in a Cup is a transporting experience. That is to say, once inside, you’re in Paris. Segmented into two unique experiences, Paris in a Cup greets you with a boutique where treasures from France abound (at very reasonable prices), where you can find a little beautiful something for almost anyone: imported and signature lines of tea, handmade cards, aprons, Parisian memorabilia, jewelry, sweets and more. NINA’s teas boasts a 300 year tradition distinguished by a wide range of the finest tea blends - today delicately flavored with pure essential oils, including its popular Marie-Antoinette tea, flavored with apples and roses.

“We are proud to offer these teas freshly brewed at the table, in store and online for purchase to enjoy at home,” says Cheryl. “They also make a very thoughtful gift for the tea connoisseur.”
Keep going and you find the real treasure, a tearoom worthy of the most iconic streets of Paris itself. Chandeliers, original art, glamorous French

accents and detail after detail create a rich, stately ambience without being gaudy or overwhelming. It’s an atmosphere ideal for bridal and baby showers, women’s group meetings, corporate luncheons, anniversary celebrations and office parties with a bit of panache.
But half the delight of France is cuisine. Paris in a Cup is, after all, a restaurant. Don’t let the “tearoom” part fool you; their menu arguably outshines the décor (and that’s saying something). In addition to traditional tea and fare (scones, pastries, finger sandwiches), Paris in a Cup offers a full lunch menu of handcrafted soups (try their famous baked potato soup), delectable salads and hearty sandwiches. All their breads are made in-house and the extraordinary desserts are almost as beautiful as they are delicious. If you only take one

thing away from Paris in a Cup, perhaps consider making it a macaroon, a treat for which they have become famous; so famous that many proclaim these macaroons to be better than those you might enjoy in Paris.
For visitors, Paris in a Cup is a chance to escape to Paris for an hour or two. For Cheryl, it has been a dream come true and a reason to delay retirement for just a little while longer.
