“HB Magazine has been the one constant marketing voice for The Training Spot since 2003. We’re a personal training and nutrition studio with two locations in Huntington Beach and a location in Newport Beach. Between the advertorial we write each issue and our ever present ad, we feel as though we can speak to our market. The magazine itself has a strong presence in our community with a never ending supply of information, advice, and community culture. We wouldn’t be spending our advertising dollars if the ROI wasn’t outstanding. Thank you Jody for your magazine and your vision.”

Timing was perfect when it was announced early this spring that 5th & PCH would replace The Strand as the new name for the mixed-used development. All the shops, restaurants, offices and Shorebreak Hotel has just been painted in an entirely new color pallet to identify it’s close proximity to the beach, which suggested a transformation was in the works to re-brand the location as a unique destination in Downtown Huntington Beach to Shop, Dine, Play and Stay!
“5th & PCH is truly one of the most unique shopping districts in Orange County, offering a spectacular ocean view that includes the iconic HB Pier with constant beach activity of surfers, swimmers, bicyclists and people enjoying the surf city experience” states Senior Property Manager, Kate Leigh.
“Our renovation has been a huge success with locals who love the new colorful store fronts, accented with seasonal banners, and our constant attention to keep the street and walkways sparkling clean” adds Ms. Leigh. “Our efforts to attract new merchants has paid off as well”!
New tenants opened in March and April include The Pizza Press, where customers craft their own pizza, and lf Outlet that offers trendy young ladies casual wear.
In addition to the merchants now open for business, HQ Gastropub will join the eclectic tenant mix in early fall to provide high quality food, beer, wine, spirits. “HQ Gastropub has been compared to Hard Rock Café, because of its music and visually inspiring décor of classic vintage guitars and art. But I’m excited about the black & white vintage tv shows they will play in the evenings”, jokes Kate. “HQ’s location on PCH will provide breath

5th & PCH began an ambitious calendar of special events in 2017 to offer a unique experience for locals and visitors. “We were thrilled to host International Women’s Surfing Champion, Sally Fitzgibbons on opening day of the US Open, offering her All Australian Beach Body Workout to 100’s of people who signed-up in advance”, states Ms. Leigh. “5th & PCH has been approached by numerous organizations, wanting an authentic street venue for their expos, demonstrations and community outreach. This also gives us opportunities to partner with our neighbors and non-profits to get them involved and support them in the process.”
Owners of 5th & PCH, Arrow Retail, out of Dallas, Texas, want to be a contributing member of the community

through sponsorships and fund raising efforts to benefit the HB International Surfing Museum, Waggin’ Trails Dog Rescue, Duck-a-Thon and Miss Huntington Beach Scholarship Program, to name a few.
Restaurant tours for 5th & PCH began August, from Walk, Wine & Dine in Huntington Beach. “There was so much interest about 5th & PCH after their remodel”, states tourowner Sherry Hardesty, “I created a tour that starts with a hand crafted cocktail and appetizers at Pacific Hideaway, then take guests to visit the other eateries to enjoy some

of their most popular menu items, and then end the evening by making s’mores at the firepits inside the courtyard at Shorebreak Hotel”!

One of my girlfriends has incredibly long wavy locks, that almost always look like she just rolled out of a Roxy cover shoot. Another just chopped all off her hair so her almost one-year-old can’t get a massive (and pain-

ful) handful anymore. I want one of those braids you see on Pinterest but can never quite achieve at home in the bathroom. Since The Blow Down doesn’t just have a prescribed set of hairstyles, their vibe is incredibly individualized and edgy.
“We approach each customer as an individual and promote creativity catered to that customer’s particular style,” says Rene. “We have an inspiration board like so many of our clients, and we change it regularly to keep the creative wheels turning: in your minds and ours.”
For bridal parties, a girls’ night out or anytime you and your friends want to look exceptionally fabulous, book an appointment (walk-ins are also welcome) at The Blow Down, Huntington Beach’s premier blow dry and makeup bar. Owner Rene Agee will share her philosophy that “getting ready for the party should be part of the party,” and she isn’t over-promising.

The stylists at The Blow Down don’t just stop with hair. Makeup is part of the party too, and with everything from false eyelashes to “The Full Frontal” (full face makeup), you can expect that from your shoulders up, you’ll be feeling like the belle of the ball. The team is mobile too, which means you can book them for day-of makeup and hair on site at your wedding or event venue. There really is little more important than feeling relaxed the day of a big event- and finding a team dedicated to bringing their own lifestyle of fun while making clients feel beautiful cannot be overstated. “I wanted to combine my love of good music, great libations, and making folks feel like their best selves - this is a place where people can come and just want to hang out. It’s that fun to be here!” Staff come in on their days off, exchanging stories, new tips and tricks on the latest styles, and are always ready to welcome guests into the party.

Offering wine, beer, champagne, and a variety of other non-alcoholic beverages, The Blow Down is more than a hair salon, more than the local watering hole: more than a night out with your close girlfriends. “We want everyone to leave here wanting to come back.” I’ll be a sworn return customer, just for the scalp massage - and the rest of the a la carte options don’t disappoint either. That braid I want for a friend’s upcoming wedding? Clients can choose from a simple or customized option. Just need a wash? Just need a style? Done and done. The stylists can work with pre-existing extensions or add them on site. Bring your little ones along, and they can sit under a stylist too, for a wash, blow dry, and signature ‘do! If you can’t remember the last time you were pampered, and feel like the normal wash and dry just isn’t going to cut it, The Blow Down’s deep conditioning treatment is the best way to revitalize those tired tresses.
Girlfriends walk away from the experience with the perfect hair and makeup for their special event, but more than that, the feeling of truly being taken care of.
Connect with Rene and her team of professional stylists and makeup artists by stopping by The Blow Down at 225 5th Street in Huntington Beach, call (714) 9160801 or visit www.ontheblowdown.com

Are you on track to save $1 million or more for retirement? If you are 50 or younger, you may need that much in savings to generate the kind of retirement income you prefer.
Personal finance website NerdWallet recently did some math concerning this very objective. What kind of sustained savings effort would a 30-year-old with nothing invested need to make to amass $1 million in retirement savings by age 67, assuming a consistent 6% annual return? (Keep in mind, a tax-advantaged retirement account is not the only potential source of retirement savings.)1
According to NerdWallet’s projection, a 30-year-old earning $40,000 a year would have to set aside 18.3% of each paycheck toward that goal. The percentage drops to 12.2% for a 30-year-old earning $60,000 annually, and 9.2% a year for a 30-year-old with an $80,000 salary.1
Salaries are not frozen across a lifetime of working, of course – but this simple math denotes the initial effort a millennial may want to make. A general rule of thumb is that you should direct 10-15% of each paycheck into retirement savings.1
You must take some risk as you save for the future. Some people are afraid of Wall Street and reluctant to invest in equities; they wish they could just save for retirement through a bank account or in an investment vehicle with minimal risk.
For most people, this approach is not realistic. The earlier you start, the more compounding potential you have. Take the hypothetical example of a 25-year-old who starts investing just $200 a month in equities via a tax-advantaged retirement account. The investments earn 8% a year. That 25-year-old is positioned to have $622,000 in that account by age 65. So, even a little invested per month might help a young adult make considerable progress toward a retirement savings objective.2
While some people take too little risk when they invest, others simply invest too little. There are people in their forties and fifties who have very large cash positions – over $100,000 in deposit accounts. Their bank accounts are almost as large as their investment accounts.
They are taking another kind of risk: the risk of having too much money on the sidelines. Putting an extra $10,000 –just to throw out a figure – into retirement savings at age 45 or 50 could make a real difference. Just using the Rule of 72 (Google this phrase if it is new to you), at an 8% annual return, that $10,000 would double in just nine years;

further growth and compounding would come after that, becoming more dramatic with time.2
Having a lot of cash in the bank is wonderful, but there are times when an emergency fund is larger than it may need to be. Some of that money might be better off in a taxadvantaged retirement account, especially if a household is behind on retirement saving.

Diane Silverstein had never heard of the show “Absolutely Fabulous” when she named her aptly-titled gifts and décor boutique in central Huntington Beach. But the fun-loving, irreverent, blonde, champagne-promoting show does give a glimpse into what makes Absolutely Fabulous such a treasure. Absolutely Fabulous is not your runof-the-mill, Hallmark-style gift shop; they are as fun and irreverent as the show they share a name with. “We’re like family here,” glows Diane. “I give my regulars a 10% discount on everything, and we often know what they’re looking for before they do.”
The nature of gift purchasing has changed greatly since The nature of gift purchasing has changed greatly since the advent of the internet. How has Absolutely Fabulous stayed above the fray and blossomed while the rest of the gift industry flounders? “That’s easy,” responds Diane Silverstein, “quality, selection, price range, and ease of shopping.” After many visits to her “absolutely fabulous” gift and décor shop, I would have to agree.

“Plus – we ship world-wide, so you can mail your stuff right from here!”
While the internet excels at making home shopping the easiest experience, when you know exactly what you’re looking for, much of holiday gift-giving starts with “who is this for, and how much do I want to spend on them?” Absolutely Fabulous makes this type of shopping easy with their “you know the personality, we know the product” approach to holiday gift-giving. “You see,” Diane explains in her charming English accent, “we spend hours and hours searching for the best new products offered in the

gift industry. When our customers come in with their lists, we walk them around and point out options that our customers would never have found in an internet search.”
Diane is not kidding on that last point. The variety and uniqueness of products at Absolutely Fabulous is astounding: hand-made jewelry, Miche Bag purses (the ones where you just drop the “insides” of your purse into a new shell, rather than having to dump all of your stuff out!), $10 silk scarves, old-school shaving kits for men, a “Daddy’s Tool Bag” that includes diaper changing equipment, and instructional DVD, face mask and other funny items, rare paintings by successful artists, large crystal chandeliers, crystal perfume bottles, stuffed animal baby
bottle covers, piggy banks for kids, “dorm survival kits” for new students, wedding party gifts, rare Disney art and collectibles, Halloween-themed decor and gifts, Christmas decorations that range from very inexpensive bottle stoppers and tree decorations to 6-foot high collectible Santa dolls. Absolutely really does cover the gamut of gifts for anyone: “from birth to death and everything in-between is our moniker” Diane proudly states. I tend to agree.
Let’s see what other people have had to say about Absolutely Fabulous (we checked their reviews): “nicest ladies who took terrific care of me,” “Love this store. It’s amazing and wonderful to shop in.” The raves go on and on. Absolutely Fabulous is not only a local treasure, however, they have been awarded multiple national awards for her visual merchandising (did I men-

tion that they have the best windows in the country – an honor repeatedly bestowed upon them by industry publications) and marketing. Diane was even flown to the United Kingdom by Gifts and Decorative Accessories Magazine (the leading magazine in the gift industry), put up in a hotel, and honored with the title of “VIP buyer.” “I guess they just like the selections I’ve made over the years,” Diane humbly responds when I ask why they chose her for this honor.
So what are you waiting for? For every dollar spent at a local shop, 48% goes back into the community. If you purchase from a major, non-local, retailer, the number is 13%. For the internet - nothing (unless the business or distributor happens to be close to you, which is highly unlikely)!!
This holiday season, find out why Absolutely Fabulous is so appropriately-named. Give local family businesses your time. You will find that you spend both less time and less money, all while adding to the local economy. It’s a no-brainer!
Connect with Diane and the crew at Absolutely Fabulous located at 6026 Warner Avenue in Huntington Beach, call (714) 842-1608 or visit www.absolutelyfabulous1.com

By Robert Pugach, MD
I have just been treated for prostate cancer. This is my personal story. My prostate cancer was diagnosed last year.
My internist, as part of my annual check-up, ordered a PSA blood test and I requested that a “free” PSA be added to the total PSA level that is typically done. The next step was to undergo a biopsy, where a colleague of mine, got the honor/task of doing my biopsy. My biopsy showed a miniscule focus of cancer.
So, what to do about a tiny, moderately aggressive prostate cancer? Well, some would do nothing. I am a candidate for “active surveillance” or “watchful waiting.” There are many patients whose cancers will never progress to the point where they pose a danger.
My concern about that approach is that no one really knows what we are waiting for. There is no level of PSA and there is no imaging study that says when we must treat prostate cancer. Add to that the fact that 37% of men have more aggressive or more extensive prostate cancer than what is found on biopsy.
I was also calm because I had the utmost confidence in my doctor. Like me, he had been traveling to other countries for the past 10 years treating patients with HIFU. On the morning of my procedure I awoke at 4:30 AM for my final HIFU preparations and went to the surgery center.
I woke up in the recovery room four hours later and saw my wife’s smiling face. I was a bit groggy, but pain free and comfortable. My doctor confirmed that my procedure went perfectly! Within an hour or so after waking up I was discharged.

I am not a gambler, especially when it comes to my health. I desire and plan to live a long, healthy life. So, I’ve decided to have my prostate cancer treated with High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU).
In the weeks leading up to my treatment, I was surprisingly calm. I can honestly say that I never had a moment of fear, anger, panic or any of the other emotions that many of my patients have shared with me in over 30 years of treating this potentially lethal, terrible disease.
The reason for my attitude was that my cancer was diagnosed at the earliest possible stage. The odds are overwhelmingly likely that it will never return. That meant that I was in charge of my cancer instead of it being in charge of me. I was spared the fear that patients experience when they are diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer that can be extensive or aggressive and, potentially, not curable.
There was no pain. The catheter was a bit uncomfortable. I had no ill effects and enjoyed a meal of clam chowder and pizza. I arrived in San Francisco with prostate cancer and would leave the following day cancer free. I had a HIFU procedure that has a 3% chance of bladder control problems and a 5-10% chance of erectile dysfunction. Contrast that with surgery where incontinence rates are typically 35% or higher and erectile dysfunction is common. I was able to return to normal activities 3 days later!
The key to successful treatment of prostate cancer is to have it diagnosed at its earliest stage so HIFU is a treatment option. I can tell you now, from my personal experience, that it’s the key to getting on with your life while leaving you whole.

Since its first Wills and Trusts Week in the fall of 2011, the Orange Catholic Foundation has had as one of its primary goals to encourage everyone to have an estate plan designed to provide for the needs of their families.
Each year in the spring and fall, the Orange Catholic Foundation works in collaboration with parishes and schools throughout the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange to provide information sessions led by local Catholic estate planning attorneys and financial advisors to help you protect and provide for your loved ones, update or create your estate plan, and learn more about wills, trusts, estate taxes, probate expenses, guardianship of minor children, selection of personal representatives, and more.
For convenience, the Foundation offers a series of morning and evening seminars that are scheduled at local parishes across the diocese.
While learning how to effectively plan a legacy, attendees at these sessions receive answers to such questions as:
• Who will make my healthcare decisions if I am no longer able to act on my own behalf?
• Who will have the power to manage our finances if we are no longer able to manage our property or financial affairs?
• What is the difference between a will and a trust?
• What happens if I pass away without an updated estate plan?
• What are the advantages of pre-planning for my funeral expenses?
• How can we leave a legacy of faith?
• Who should we appoint as our trustees and successor trustees?
• Who will be the guardian of my dependent children or child with special needs if something happens to me?
The Orange Catholic Foundation warmly welcomes all who are interested in attending one of the upcoming sessions during the week of October 16 through 21. Times and locations for the spring Wills and Trusts Week are listed in their advertisement in this issue.
Everyone who attends and completes a basic introductory form will receive a complimentary consultation with both an estate planning attorney and a financial planner within the next six months.
The Orange Catholic Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable corporation and an autonomous pious foundation that exists to serve the Diocese of Orange, including its parishes, schools and overall diocesan mission. The Orange Catholic Foundation plans and conducts major diocesan fundraising programs including the Proud to be Catholic Pastoral Services Appeal (PSA), the For Christ Forever Capital Campaign, the Conference on Business & Ethics, the annual Wills and Trusts Weeks and other special fundraising events. The Foundation also manages endowments and various charitable funds and grants funds according to the donor’s intent.

Navigating the Orange County real estate landscape can be challenging for both buyers and sellers to track market trends, sift through all the numbers, and attempt to forecast what may or may not happen over years to come. I know I’d rather choose a new paint color or build my dream wraparound porch than pore tediously over industry statistics. And that’s where finding the right realtor comes into the picture regardless of what side of the transaction you’re on. The right marketing and hyper-reponsive customer service are mission critical when selling your home. For buyers, having an agent dedicated to helping you find the perfect property that addresses your specific needs and desires - regardless of how long it takes - can be the difference between buying a house and finding your dream home.
Often, determining the difference between one’s skill set and one’s passion leaves much to be desired: a rift not many of us have the luxury to cross over in our professional lives. For Sheri, seeing her skill set and passion collide in the real estate market has revolutionized hers. With over 25 years of executive level management and marketing in over 26 countries, Sheri’s transition to luxury property management was as smooth as can be. In fact, it doesn’t get much smoother than earning herself a top 2% spot in the Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Agents nationwide with a Chairman’s Circle award and being named among the top 50 Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties agents in Orange County. Yet, unlike a great many OC brokers, Sheri doesn’t hail from Orange County. “I grew up on a farm,” she notes with a smile. “I’m interested in Orange County in the same way my buyers and sellers are interested: I came here to buy a house for myself, I dealt with the same process, the same negotiations; and I think that makes me uniquely suited to welcome folks to the area.”
With the increased global reach of real estate, understanding and appropriately providing services to meet the various needs out there are constantly added to the equation of buying or selling a home. Sheri services all of South Orange County, not just the city she resides in, and she is willing to go the extra mile to help her clients understand what it is they are really achieving with her at the helm of their housing project. “The needs of a buyer are vastly

different than those of a seller,” she says. “We have seen a strong recovery over the past few years, but with low inventories, it continues to be a sellers market.” So what questions are you asking as either in the current market? You may have the perfect paint chip in hand, but what kind of wall would you like to decorate? You may be approaching retirement, and are looking to downsize. Do you have specific square footage in mind? Do you have a budgetary cap? Is there room for the family dog? A yard? “Floor plans and functionality of a home can vary greatly and rearranging the current use with minor changes can have a much bigger value to a buyer, if they can see it. Not all agents can provide that vision. I look for areas I can make the process easier for my clients and actively take things off their plate to reduce stress.”

Because everyone’s motivations are different, a good realtor connects with clients and can manage the expectations on the table, while successfully maximizing results. Finding a broker that will offer more than a minimum level of service however, can be painstaking. With her background in marketing and negotiation, it is no wonder that Sheri has found such success - invaluable when navigating the market and its constant fluctuations.
“When I’m looking for a prospective agent to sell my home, I’m asking if they do this as a full time job - I’m asking for reviews and references - I’m asking what sets them apart from other agents. Professional photography, quality marketing materials and online exposure are base requirements these days to provide great results for
the seller. I go beyond what is expected, which changes with each client. I’ve planted flowers, moved couches. Selling or buying a home can be an emotional experience, and making it as positive as possible is my goal.”
For more information about Sheri Normandin of Berkshire Hathaway, please call 949-612-5884, or email Sheri4OCHomes@gmail.com.

Gourmet eats, premium drinks, uncommon gifts and special events worth sharing
By Jody Robinson
There is nothing more satisfying than stumbling upon a hidden gem, especially where food is involved. Big restaurants widely advertised are easy to find and sometimes worth a visit, but discovering that independent establishment or that mom and pop shop that surprises and delights you – now, that’s an experience worth sharing.
Consider this your “stumble” upon Monkey House Café, a hidden gem with a gourmet menu at casual prices, uncommon gift items and an adventurous atmosphere.

At Monkey House Café you’ll find a delicious and healthy lineup of original gourmet sandwiches served on freshly baked bread. Try the Turkey Cranberry on ciabatta or the Monkey Cristo with turkey, ham, swiss, mayo, lettuce and tomato grilled on egg bread… whatever your sandwich choice, pair it with homemade soup, a fresh smoothie or out-of-this-world potato salad and you can’t go wrong. Delicate desserts include a delicious raspberry almond bar, chocolate truffle cheesecake and many assorted scones.
If the food is a perfect blend of affordability and excellence, the atmosphere at Monkey House Café is a good blend of casual and comfortable, great for anything from a business luncheon to a friendly get-together to a quick pick-up and go. All the jokes my husband makes about potentially living under the same roof as his mother-in-law aside, my 84-year-old mother knows she can always move in with our family if or when the time arrives when she needs extra help in her daily life.
Irecently learned about Acti-Kare, thinking forward about what options were out there for those looking to take care of their elderly in-house: options to give you more dignity, comfort, and independence, not less.
An industry leader in providing highly qualified, compassionate, and trustworthy caregivers, Acti-Kare is dedicated to in-home care, and Lori Renaud, R.N., is at the helm in South Orange County, steering her team towards excellence. Especially when it comes to senior care. Acti-Kare offers affordable in-home care - both hourly and live-in services - including transportation, meal preparation, personal care services, companionship from professionals who are screened, bonded and insured.
“I began Acti-Kare in April of 2015. Working in healthcare provided me with the opportunity to recognize the value and benefit of high-quality in-home care,” says Lori. “Too many seniors only have a life of existence, leading to isolation and depression.” Indeed, for those struggling with recovery following a surgery, like a friend’s mother after
she broke her hip, life becomes smaller and smaller. Until the house you raised your children in can start to feel more like a trap than a triumph.
Acti-Kare utilizes a collaborative approach in working alongside hospice and home health care companies toward the same client/patient goals through open communication and a commitment toward providing outstanding service. “Our caregivers go to the client’s residence, and we are daily achieving my goal of providing seniors the opportunity to have a life with meaning, and a more active, social, and independent lifestyle in a safe environment,” says Lori.
As a Registered Nurse, Lori takes each initial consultation herself, developing an individualized plan of care for every client, and checking back in regularly to provide personalized health assessments. The Acti-Vate Program takes customized care one step further, challenging the norm of an age-induced fatigue, and balancing mind, body and spirit to improve the wellbeing of clients holistically. The
knowledge that your loved ones are in careful hands is priceless, and the understanding that those hands are leading your loved ones to a safer, more independent lifestyle in their advanced years is immeasurable.
“I can now sleep at night, knowing my mother is safe,” says Mary, a client from Laguna Beach. “Not only does my mother now have a constant companion, her laundry is taken care of, mail sorted - but if she wants to go out and run errands or meet a friend, her transportation is arranged.” Clients can still do their own grocery shopping; but if they’d rather not bother with the task of preparing and cleaning up afterwards, or perhaps are dealing with a restricted diet, “Acti-Kare caregivers can prepare meals that maintain a healthy diet, as well as monitor their daily nutritional needs to insure sufficient nutrition.” Unfortunately, a great many seniors fail to meet those demands, leading to frustration, and often, a heightened risk of illness.
“I educate the public on disease management and prevention,” says Lori. “But sometimes it takes the presence of a competent, compassionate caregiver to ensure that corners aren’t being cut on health in some of the most important years of your life.” Treating every client as if they were a family member of their own, Lori’s team is confident that their suite of senior care solutions will surpass your expectations for care - without committing to a long-term contract or minimum hour block of service.
My mother is in fine health now. But as she ages and has increasing needs, what a great option to see her in her own home, running her own errands, confident, dignified and independent in the care right at her doorstep.

The idea of a time capsule is not a new one. Made with the intention that they should be opened at a later date to help future generations understand the current time more accurately, or to recall a celebratory time in history: like a World’s Fair, or momentous birthday. A collection of moments, or trinkets, or letters of memory are often included: personal artifacts that shed light on a distilled moment in time.
Tom and Nicole Ladegaard are no strangers to the idea of personal artifact. In fact, they make it their business to gently tread through the stories of seemingly run-of-the-mill lives and dredge up the extraordinary details. The details that make the nding so sweet- and the telling worth the time.
Originally dedicated to practicing law, Tom found that one of the most critical tasks he performed on a daily basis was recording witness testimony in depositions. “I developed a knack for arriving prepared, asking probing questions, and following verbal and nonverbal cues of the interview subject.”
Being deeply empathetic led Tom to ask questions of his own grandfather“I began with a couple (questions) and it just snowballed. What began as a simple project to share with the family became a video and a book about his life.” My own grandfather passed away a little over a year ago. We were close: he, a regular attendee of my soccer games from the time I could walk; I, visiting him during of ce hours at the college campus at which he taught. And yet, there were so many things I wish I had to carry with me now that he is gone. I stumbled upon Eternal Roots after his passing, and wished that I had found it sooner.

“We launched Eternal Roots after realizing that the value of these pieces was not just something I enjoyed- that a person’s oral history was hugely important to their family and by pairing it with photographs, we could create a memory capsule to cherish forever.” Offering a variety of package options, clients can choose from just the highlights, to a three-hour interview, complete with photos, a fully transcribed book divided into chapters, and memory stick ash drive, ready to upload on any device.

“Take comfort knowing your story will live on,” says Tom. “We’re just a vehicle to celebrate your individuality. The things I found out about my 96-yearold grandfather were some of the most valuable memories of my life - imagine what might surface under guided introspection and re ection, and reconnect your family with its past.”
It comes as little surprise that the project is starting to gain momentum. Tom has interviewed a lumber executive, a pet foods executive, a painter, an author, and anesthesiologist, and an attorney. Next up? A race car driver. “Each of these people now have a priceless artifact connecting them with their children and grandchildren.”
People are starting to pick up on the idea in smaller ways too - with tribute videos that can be shown at anniversaries, birthdays, or other celebrations.

“When someone records their story, it provides a bridge between them and their offspring. They’ll learn details about their heritage they never knew, as I spend of the interviews detailing my client’s ancestry, as far back as they can go.” Where else can a moment in time be explored over the span of ve generations?
The second phase of the interviews cover the client’s own timeline and life story: a personal topography, if you will, charting the lay of a life and exhibiting it for those most cherished to discover. The third phase? Re ection. “We cover the client’s philosophies, spirituality, life lessons, successes or failures. Future generations may see glimpses of themselves in the storyteller, and grow from the experience.” I always knew that my grandfather and I shared a deep love for the outdoors, but how I would love to be able to listen as he told his favorite stories from the trail over and over now that he is gone. Sharing his vast experience in the wild: and living on, collected, in legacy.
The earliest example of a time capsule referenced is typically the Detroit Century Box. Brought to life from the imagination of then mayor, William C. Maybury, it was created on December 31, 1900 - scheduled to be opened a century later. With Eternal Roots, your handcrafted capsule from Tom’s detailed interviews and Nicole’s concept and graphic design assistance, you can relive those distilled moments every day if you like, for the next century and beyond.

The stress of planning after a person’s passing can be overwhelming for those left behind. For this reason, making your own pre-arrangements is a kindness for your loved ones. Cardio certainly has its place in every fitness program but it should be a part of a balanced program including cardio, strength training, and a healthy diet.
The key to losing body fat and keeping it off is strength training. Lean muscle is the driving force behind your metabolism and the only way to increase your metabolism or burn more calories at rest, is to increase lean muscle through strength training. For the women that are afraid to get "too bulky" from strength training that is simply a myth.
The more lean muscle mass you have, the less fat you are likely to have. The reason for this is that muscle actually burns fat. Muscle helps the body burn calories for hours after a workout. Studies have shown people who lift weights have an even lower fat mass percentage than those who do aerobic exercise alone.
Strength training has benefits that go well beyond the appearance of nicely toned muscles. Your balance and coordination will improve, as will your posture. More importantly, if you have poor flexibility and balance, strength training can reduce your risk of falling by as much as 40 percent, a crucial benefit, especially as you get older.
Most people don't stop to consider that the more strength you have, the less likely you may be to get injured. If you are an avid runner, cyclist or swimmer it might make sense to lift some weights so your body is stronger and can perform longer and more efficiently without getting injured.
What if you just dropped fifty pounds through diet and a nightly jog through your neighborhood but when you look in the mirror, things still jiggle and you still carry weight in the same spots you always did? The best way to change this is to shape your body through building muscle. This will tighten, firm, tone, and target those trouble spots that you just can't seem to get rid of.
The highest numbers of women who get osteoporosis in later years are ones of slim build. Doctors always say that one of the best ways to fight this debilitating bone loss
is to do weight-bearing activities, which increase bone density. Muscle has also been shown in major studies to fight the onset of type two diabetes, build the heart muscle to fight heart disease, and even help those who suffer from arthritis to be more symptom free.
Muscle also supports overall immunity. This is because muscle supplies the immune system with the diseasefighting amino acid glutamine. So, the more muscle you have the more glutamine is supplied to the immune system.
Research shows that building and maintaining muscle can speed up metabolism. This research goes on to say that "muscle burns ten to twelve times the calories per pound each day that fat does. You're boosting your metabolism not just during exercise but all day."
Only use safe and well-maintained equipment. Faulty equipment will significantly increase your risk of injury. Warm up and cool down thoroughly. Incorporate slow, sustained stretches. Wear appropriate clothing - natural fibers 'breathe' better than synthetics, and multiple layers of clothing are preferable to one bulky layer. Don't forget to breathe - exhale at the point of greatest exertion rather than holding your breath.
Control the weights at all times - don't throw them up and down, or use momentum to 'swing' the weights through their range of motion. Make sure you use correct lifting technique. If you are unsure, consult with a reputable personal trainer. Incorrect technique can slow your progress, or even cause injuries. Ensure you move the weight through your full range of motion. This not only works the muscle fully, but reduces the risk of joint injury.
With strength training your muscles need time to recover, so it should only be done on alternate days. Always take some time to warm up and cool down after strength training.
