BRING DOWN THE HOUSE WITH THE

I haven’t been a kid in a while. What I recall about music lessons is that they were forced, and more importantly, stodgy.

Beginning somewhere around the fourth grade, students were advised to pick an instrument for class, and I can honestly say I only know two adults from those classes who still play those instruments today. Needless to say, my music classes were nothing like the offering at School of Rock Huntington Beach.

A unique community of teachers, musicians, and families, School of Rock Huntington Beach sounds exactly like what it is, and also nothing like what it truly means. Founded in 2014 by a trio of performers, educators, and business owners, the industry welcomed them onto the scene with open arms. Larry Boodman, an alum of the Orange County School of the Arts, and Jeff Nunes were members of an L.A-based indie rock group known as Fourwayfree. Joey Acona, a production and performance instructor at OCSA for many years, knew Boodman through their common connections.

“The School of Rock was borne from the desire to create a safe place for supportive collaboration among students, and has instilled confidence, self-esteem, and discipline that will serve them well into the future pur-

suit of any goal, not just music," says Jeff.

Practical instruction meets professional performance education. The students learn on guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, or vocals. But their weekly private lesson is combined with a weekly group rehearsal, “as the students prepare for an actual rock show that they perform at the end of the season. Themed - ACDC, Arena Rock, or Grunge. And played on professional stages like the House of Blues Anaheim.”

If you’re not sure what you’d like to specialize in just yet, no worries. School of Rock Huntington Beach provides a free trial lesson to anyone interested, and all are welcome to give them a try. Ages 6 to adult are brought into the fold, and “given the chance to learn team work, practice commitment, and master their chosen instrument. It makes learning not only fun and engaging, but a team sport.” Glad I don’t have to be a kid to go back to School (of Rock).

THE CORE ACUPUNCTURE & WELLNESS

Natural Healing to Rejuvenate Your Mind, Body and Soul

Hands-on therapies and acupuncture have long been recognized by the World Health Organization and the National Institutes of Health as a treatment for multiple and varied health concerns.

Ipersonally believe in the transformative power of combining ancient wisdom with modern technology in wellness.

As such, I was particularly pleased to learn of a local practice dedicated to a true holistic approach to healthcareone that incorporates acupuncture and other modalities to provide comprehensive treatment options tailored to meet the diverse needs of its patients.

In the hands of Dr. Jae Y. Huh, Doctor of Acupuncture and founder of The Core Acupuncture & Wellness in Huntington Beach, the commitment to achieving optimal health naturally through the synthesis of ancient and modern isn’t just possible, it is essential.

Dr. Huh and his team of highly skilled professionals have vast experience in the field of Oriental Medicine, each with their own area of specialization including digestive problems, emotional and psychological issues, women's health and pain management for conditions ranging from peripheral neuropathy, TMJ, back pain and fibromyalgia to generalized stress, low circulation and anxiety.

An esteemed Eastern doctor in Korea, his grandfather's dedication to holistic healing inspired Dr. Huh to pursue a career in acupuncture and Eastern medicine. A graduate of Dongguk University and recipient of an externship at the University of Southern California (USC), Dr. Huh earned advanced degrees and certifications in the study of acupuncture and related modalities.

“Practicing in clinical settings has refined my skills and deepened my understanding of holistic healthcare,” he says. “My journey into this field was inspired by my grandfather, but I have enjoyed longevity in practice because of the positive results I've witnessed. What I believe truly distinguishes our

practice is our commitment to providing our patients with personalized and comprehensive care."

Therapies like Tui-Na (an ancient Oriental Hands-on Bodywork that helps rid the body of blockages and imbalances believed to lead to pain and illness), herbs, facial rejuvenation, acupuncture, and cupping, stimulate not only vital energies in the body, but work to increase blood flow, impact neurotransmitters, and stimulate endorphin release - all of which the body cope with stress, regulate temperature and manage pain.

Acupuncture has long been recognized as a viable alternative to analgesics and other pain-blocking medication, but did you know it is also an option for treating carpal tunnel, arthritis, and even menstrual cramping?

State-of-the-art modalities - such as radio frequency, interferential current therapy and pulsed electromagnetic therapy - are provided in tandem with Eastern medicine to “enhance the effectiveness of our treatments and offer the most advanced care for each patient's specific needs."

Whether you’re seeking relief from pain, managing chronic conditions,

Hyeyoung Jaehwan

or simply aiming to enhance your overall wellness, it's always great to hear from current and past patients as to the results they've received when seeking the services of a healthcare provider.

Toward that end, Dr. Huh and his team boast scores of 5-Star reviews online with glowing video testimonials from patients like Linda C. of Huntington Beach who shares that "my doctor recommended I seek out an acupuncturist with a doctorate degree to help with my Covid fatigue ... after a few weeks of Dr. Jae's treatments, I am well on my way to recovery."

Another patient, Dawn Dittmer echoes Linda's sentiment and adds "Dr. Jae is a phenomenally skilled doctor! I am amazed at how much he has helped with the healing of my surgical wounds ... he can literally pinpoint the exact spots every time and give me immediate relief."

The Core Acupuncture & Wellness accepts insurance, FSA and HSA for acupuncture treatments and can assist in determining what services are covered. No matter what your financial situation is, if your policy doesn't cover its services, The Core will tailor a treatment plan to meet your needs.

Given its commitment to holistic patient care, it's no wonder The Core Acupuncture is one of the most wellrespected centers for balanced medicine in Orange County. If only evidenced-based integrative functional medicine wasn’t the exception, but the norm.

Beware of Lifestyle Creep

Sometimes more money can mean more problems.

“Lifestyle creep” is an unusual phrase describing an all-too-common problem: the more money people earn, the more money they tend to spend.

Frequently, the newly affluent are the most susceptible. As people establish themselves as doctors and lawyers, executives, and successful entrepreneurs, they see living well as a reward. Outstanding education, home, and business loans may not alter this viewpoint. Lifestyle creep can happen to successful individuals of any age. How do you guard against it?

Keep one financial principle in mind: spend less than you make. If you get a promotion, if your business takes off, if you make partner, the additional income you receive can go toward your retirement savings, your investment accounts, or your debts.

See a promotion, a bonus, or a raise as an opportunity to save more. Do you have a household budget? Then the amount of saving that the extra income comfortably permits will be clear. Even if you do not closely track your expenses, you can probably still save (and invest) to a greater degree without imperiling your current lifestyle.

Avoid taking on new fixed expenses that may not lead to positive outcomes. Shouldering a fixed mortgage payment as a condition of home ownership? Good potential

outcome. Assuming an auto loan so you can drive a luxury SUV? Maybe not such a good idea. While the home may appreciate, the SUV will almost certainly not.

Resist the temptation to rent a fancier apartment or home. Few things scream “lifestyle creep” like higher rent does. A pricier apartment may convey an impressive image to your friends and associates, but it will not make you wealthier.

Keep the big goals in mind and fight off distractions. When you earn more, it is easy to act on your wants and buy things impulsively. Your typical day starts costing you more money.

To prevent this subtle, daily lifestyle creep, live your days the same way you always have – with the same kind of financial mindfulness. Watch out for new daily costs inspired by wants rather than needs.

Live well, but not extravagantly. After years of law school or time toiling at start-ups, getting hired by the right firm and making that career leap can be exhilarating – but it should not be a gateway to runaway debt. According to the Federal Reserve’s latest Survey of Consumer Finances, the average American head of household aged 35-44 carries slightly more than $100,000 of non-housing debt. This is one area of life where you want to be below average.1

Cefali & Cefali, APC

Trusted Accident Attorneys for the Most Serious Injuries

It’s a remarkable feeling when you can find someone to take your side. In relationships, sports: you name it. That one person who believes in you, makes you better, fights alongside you.

Michael Cefali matched with his person (his wife Courtney) long before law school - but their partnership extended through the long years studying for the bar and paid off in an even match that has stacked up in their favor many times over. Graduates of Chapman Law and California Western, respectively, they started the San Juan Capistrano-based Cefali & Cefali, APC in July of 2019 and have been fighting for the little guy ever since. From setting clients up with top-tier doctors and specialists, to negotiating stellar settlements, Cefali & Cefali, APC handles cases from start to finish with client health as their top priority.

Focusing on all aspects of personal injury, the Cefalis are what you might expect in such a ring: passionate, aggressive, and most importantly, honest - all traits that have contributed to the couple having recovered millions of dollars per year on behalf of their clients since opening their firm.

“The insurance companies would like you to think that they get to determine the value of your injuries, your suffering,” says Michael. “We’ll fight for every last penny because we know that you deserve it.” Clients appreciate the work that the Cefalis do. In fact, as of the date of this publication, you won’t find a single negative review of their firm anywhere on the internet.

Client Jamie shares, “I am so grateful for everything that Mike Cefali and his team did for me! Not only was he able to help me get what I was owed in my settlement and then some, but he was so responsive and kind and

it was very apparent that he cared about me and my case! He and his team are so HONEST and FAIR and it was clear from start to finish that he

had my best interest in mind! Not only is he a good lawyer but he is a good person which made a world of difference for me. I could not have asked

Michael and Courtney Cefali
18

for a better experience with a personal injury attorney! I have already recommended him to all of my friends and I will continue to recommended him to anyone looking for a good lawyer! Thank you so much Cefali and Cefali!”

Another client Carrie echoes Jamie’s sentiment, “My husband and I were rear-ended on the freeway. We felt bad thinking of contacting a lawyer, but after several months of continuous pain and medical treatments, a friend recommended Michael Cefali. From the beginning, he lived up to his core values of integrity, loyalty, and vigorous advocacy. Michael is a dedicated, friendly, and competent attorney who seamlessly represented our interests and ensured the outcome was in our favor. He treated us not like a client, but like family; he was there any time we needed him. He was empathetic to our situation and worked tirelessly with all parties to represent us. We don’t trust many people, but we trust Michael and his team and would highly recommend him to anyone seeking a professional, effective, and focused attorney.”

With five staff members to back up the stellar work Michael and Courtney produce, the couple remain incredibly hands on, based on a culture of empathy, integrity and advocacy.

“We craft each case personally, build each one for trial, and remain accessible to clients,” says Michael. “Personal injury attorneys get a bad rap when really we’re the good guys. I like to think of our firm as a pirate ship. Nimble, clever, and tenacious in spite of being outspent by the adversary, we pry money from greedy insurance companies and give it to our very deserving clients.”

Giving back is the spirit of the firm, and community work creates a direct link between Michael, Courtney, and their circle in San Juan Capistrano. The couple and their team proudly supports a number of local charitable and community organizations including: The Boys and Girls Club of Capistrano Valley (Courtney is on the Board of Directors), The San Juan Capistrano Friends of the Library (Courtney is also a board member), CREER, the Pacific Marine Mammal Foundation, and Project Coyote. Michael is a member of the San Juan Capistrano Rotary Club and has been recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow.

The Cefali team’s ethics, constant communication (every client is given Michael’s personal cell phone for easy accessibility), commitment to their clients and involvement in the community keeps everyone growing stronger and healthier together. Remarkable isn’t it, that feeling when someone takes your side?

How Can I Tell If I Have Skin Cancer?

There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.

FLEMING
in Dermatology
Dermatologic Surgery 20
DERMATOLOGY & AESTHETIC CENTER 23141 Moulton Parkway, Suite 110, Laguna Hills | (949) 916-5956 Kristy Fleming, MD, Double Board-Certified
and Micrographic

Look especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.

ACTINIC KERATOSIS

An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.

SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.

BASAL CELL CARCINOMA

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.

MELANOMA

Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.

WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW

1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.

2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life.

3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling

A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?

B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin?

C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?

D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.

E - Evolution: Has it changed?

F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others?

4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

Dispelling Misconceptions: 10 COMMON MYTHS ABOUT KETAMINE-ASSISTED THERAPY IN MENTAL HEALTH

As Medical Doctors that are experts in Ketamine Therapy, it is our responsibility to dispel misinformation and provide accurate, evidencebased information regarding treatments. Ketamine-assisted therapy has gained attention in recent years for its potential to help individuals with treatment-resistant depression and other mental health conditions. However, along with its rise in popularity, there has been a fair share of myths and misconceptions surrounding this treatment approach.

Myth

1:

Ketamine is Just a “Party Drug”

One of the most prevalent myths surrounding Ketamine is that it is simply a recreational drug with no legitimate medical use. While it’s true that Ketamine has been misused as a club drug due to its dissociative effects, it is also an FDA-approved anesthetic with well-documented benefits in medical settings. Over the last 20 years, its efficacy, superiority and safety in treating severe depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other mental health disorders has been extensively researched.

Myth 2: Ketamine-Assisted Therapy is the Same as Recreational Ketamine Use

Contrary to popular belief, Ketamineassisted therapy is a structured, supervised treatment administered by medical professionals in controlled settings. This therapy involves careful dosing and monitoring to ensure safety and effectiveness. Recreational use, on the other hand, lacks the guidance of healthcare professionals, pharmaceutical regulations of the medicine, and can be unsafe and unpredictable.

Myth 3: Ketamine is Highly Addictive

While Ketamine does have the potential for misuse and dependence, especially in recreational settings, when used under medical supervision, the risk of addiction is significantly lower. The appropriate way to receive the Ketamine is only in a monitored medical setting, never at home, and for a fixed amount of sessions (typically six infusions over 3 weeks). Medical

professionals closely monitor patients undergoing Ketamine-assisted therapy to minimize the risk of misuse and ensure safe treatment outcomes.

Myth 4: Ketamine Causes Psychosis

There is a fear that Ketamine may induce psychotic symptoms. However, under proper medical supervision and screening, the risk of such effects is extremely low. Ketamine-assisted therapy is designed to minimize adverse reactions and maximize therapeutic benefits.

Myth 5: Ketamine-Assisted Therapy is a Last Resort

While Ketamine-assisted therapy is often considered for individuals with treatmentresistant depression, it is not solely reserved as a last resort. Many patients benefit from this therapy early in their treatment journey, especially if they have not found relief from traditional antidepressants or therapies.

Myth 6: Ketamine is Unsafe

When administered by trained medical professionals in a clinical setting, Ketamine is a safe treatment option for many individuals. The doses used in Ketamineassisted therapy are carefully calculated to minimize side effects while maximizing therapeutic benefits. Patients are monitored throughout the treatment session to ensure their safety.

Myth 7: Ketamine-Assisted Therapy is Only for Depression

While Ketamine has shown remarkable results in treating depression, its benefits extend beyond this one condition. Research suggests that Ketamine-assisted therapy is also effective in treating anxiety disorders, PTSD, OCD, and chronic pain conditions.

Myth 8: Ketamine is the Same as Other Psychedelic Therapies

While Ketamine does have psychedelic properties, it differs from other psyche-

Dr. Justin Yanuck, Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician and Board Certified Pain Medicine Physician and Dr. Tanya Dall, Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician

delic therapies like psilocybin or LSD. Ketamine’s mechanism of action involves blocking certain receptors in the brain, leading to its unique therapeutic effects.

Myth 9: Ketamine is Ineffective in the Long Term

While the effects of Ketamine may not last indefinitely, many patients experience long-lasting benefits as the medicine mechanism of action actually works to fix the underlying cause of many mental health disorders.

Myth 10: Ketamine-Assisted Therapy is Only for Severe Cases

While Ketamine is often recommended for individuals with treatment-resistant depression, it is not limited to severe cases. Many patients benefit from this therapy early in their treatment journey, especially if other treatments have not provided relief.

In conclusion, Ketamine-assisted therapy holds promising potential for individuals struggling with various mental health conditions. However, it is crucial to separate fact from fiction and rely on accurate, evidence-based information when considering this treatment option. It is essential for individuals considering Ketamine-assisted therapy to consult with a qualified healthcare professional to determine if it is the right choice for their needs. With proper guidance and supervision, Ketamine can be a valuable tool in the treatment of mental health disorders, offering hope and relief to those who need it most.

Health Savings Accounts (H.S.A) and Medicare

If you have a H.S.A. when you sign up for Medicare, you can’t contribute to your H.S.A once your Medicare coverage begins. If you contribute to your H.S.A after your Medicare coverage starts, you may have to pay a tax penalty. To avoid a tax penalty, you should stop contributing to your H.S.A at least six months before you apply for Medicare.

Now, here is a really interesting piece of information regarding how your H.S.A can reimburse you for your Medicare premiums paid. Yep, even if your Medicare premiums are automatically deducted from your Social Security check, you can take tax-free withdrawals from a health savings account to reimburse yourself for those premiums. You can use your H.S.A money tax-free to pay for Medicare Part B, Medicare Part D and Medicare Advantage plan premiums once you’re 65. (But not premiums for Medicare supplement policies) in addition to paying for other out-of-pocket qualified medical and dental expenses. (Now including over the counter medications and sunscreen!)

There’s no time limit for withdrawing money from a health savings account to pay for these expenses. So, if you’ve had money in a H.S.A for several years and didn’t realize you could withdraw the money tax-free for Medicare premiums, you could reimburse yourself for all those premiums at any time. (Just make sure to keep your receipts for expenses).

South Coast Shutter and Shades

Operating honestly and with integrity has served as the foundation for the continued success of the Laguna Niguel-based South Coast Shutter and Shades for over 32 years. Owners Tom and Donna Schuster launched their own company after realizing that “on our own we would be able to offer quality products in an honest environment to our customers, as well as servicing the products we sell.”

Specializing in custom shutters, blinds (mini, faux, wood, vertical), cellular shades, woven woods, plantation and security shutters and everything in between, Tom and Donna offer free in-home consultations for design as well as measuring, they always include free professional installation and prefer to bring all of the samples to each client’s home to go over the assorted styles and many color options to suit each home’s interior and its homeowner’s unique lifestyle.

“We listen to you and then incorporate your ideas with ours to design your custom shutters, blinds or shades,” says Tom. “Our portfolios and samples are very extensive, so you will be able to envision how your windows are going to look when complete."

Tom and Donna, credit their success to date to the quality of customer service they and their team give their customers, which in turn creates a wonderful repeat and referral business. “Although there may be providers of similar products, there is no one that can match our superior customer service – from showing up on time, making precise measurements and flawless installations - and with a professional ‘can do’ attitude,” says Donna.

Tom adds that “our pricing with unbeatable discounts, sales support and the fact that we offer our customers an in-house design team at no additional charge is the first step in setting us apart from our competition. I am proud to say that we have built a reputation in the business for having the highest quality, best beauty, fit and finish and value available. All of our products come with a lifetime warranty.”

A 5-Star Yelp rated company, South Coast Shutter and Shades boasts scores of glowing testimonials online, including Debora R of Laguna Niguel who writes "Donna and Tom are amazing! Great products, great prices, great service.I've used them twice for two different businesses and I could not be happier. Donna makes suggestions based on what I tell her

my needs are and she has been spot on with her recommendations. Installations by Tom are quick and easy. Highly recommended!"

Another reviewer, Doug W. of Mission Viejo posted that "From the first call, I knew I was dealing with a reputable, experienced, HONEST company. Donna and Tom are absolute PROS and obviously take pride in their work … Their price was very competitive. Also, what they quote is what you pay - keep that in mind when talking to the "other guys" whose price seems to go up and up. All appointments including install were FAST. The installation was flawless. I had a question later that evening about my motorized shades and they called me back IMMEDIATELY. My impression is that I could call them 5 or 10 years from now and they would just as helpful."

Acclaimed the world over since its opening in 2007, KOOZA has mesmerized close to 8M spectators with over 4,500 performances in 65 cities across 22 countries. The name KOO-

ZA is inspired by the Sanskrit word “koza,” which means “box,” “chest” or “treasure,” and was chosen because one of the underlying concepts of the production is the idea of a “circus in a box.”

A THRILLING RIDE

Undeniably the most daring Cirque du Soleil touring production, KOOZA takes audiences on a thrilling emotional ride with its nail-biting, mind-boggling acrobatics. Inspired by traditional circus arts from around the globe, the show’s performances display remarkable showmanship, exceptional execution, and incredible agility – notably in the High Wire, Teeterboard and Wheel of Death acts. Featuring an international cast of more than 54 performers including a live band of 6 musicians and two singers, KOOZA will take you on a breathtaking journey you won’t want to miss!

Sanctuary by the Sea in La Jolla The Lodge at Torrey Pines

Ever since my now teenage kids were littles, I have relished the opportunity to create “Mom & Me” time with each individually - small outings to spend one-on-one. Local library events, stops for frozen yogurt, a movie matinee (anything Marvel with my son and every Disney princess with my daughter). These days the dates look more like sushi lunches and strolls through the shopping mall, but I recently managed to arrange a bit more elaborate adventure.

As our son quickly approaches his senior year in high school, I took advantage of spring break to arrange an extra special treat in one of our family’s favorite day trip destinations - La Jolla - with an overnight stay at The Lodge at Torrey Pines.

Situated atop the rugged cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, this AAA

Five Diamond rated resort stands as a testament to timeless luxury and natural beauty. Set against the backdrop of the iconic Torrey Pines Golf Course and adjacent to the breathtaking Torrey Pines State Reserve, this distinguished retreat offers a harmonious blend of exquisite architecture, unparalleled hospitality, and captivating surroundings.

44

Designed in the spirit of the renowned Arts and Crafts movement, The Lodge exudes a sense of warmth and intimacy. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, the property’s architecture pays homage to the rich heritage of the California Craftsman style, with handcrafted woodwork, stone accents, and expansive windows that frame panoramic views of the Pacific coastline.

Each of the lodge’s 170 guest rooms and suites is a sanctuary of refined comfort, featuring Stickley-style furniture, fabrics and leathers. Our generously sized guest room was appointed with Egyptian cotton linen and plush quilted duvets, luxurious granite and marble bathroom with an oversized tub, fireplace and the piece d resistance - a private balcony overlooking the gorgeous golf course and sparkling azure ocean views - perfect for a leisurely room service breakfast.

OPEN AIR (AND INDOOR) ENDEAVORS

Neither of us happen to be super outdoorsy, but our stay provided the perfect blend of indoor luxury and outdoor relaxation. Guests can borrow e-bikes to tool around the property and La Jolla at large, play an (in our case extremely competitive) game of croquet on the lawn, take a dip in the heated pool (with underwa-

ter speakers!), or practice skills on the putting green.

My son had fun educating his mother on the correct form for weighlifting in the Lodge’s state-of-the-art fitness facility featuring TechnoGym equipment. For my part, my daily exercise routine leans more toward brisk walking, so I was thrilled for the opportunity to traverse the meandering paths and rugged terrain of the Torrey Pines State Reserve when signing up for a morning a guided tour. Working toward my 10,000 steps that day was defined by rare Torrey pine trees, towering sandstone cliffs, sweeping ocean views, fragrant coastal sage

scrub and chaparral and abundant birdlife in the salt marshes below.

In addition to the abundant activities and dining on delicious woodfired dishes at The Grill, there was plenty of quality time to learn about things that interest my son, his plans for the future and all the excitement to come down the road. And we couldn’t have asked for a better backdrop of understated elegance and coastal charm.

We have a ton of experience with all kinds of doors, no matter how old, what material, or what brand.”

Performance & Professionalism: Dr. Slide-Door

Several times a year my husband and I resolve to embark on a litany of long overdue home improvement endeavors. Clean out the garage. Pare down our closets of ill-fitting clothing. Fix broken things. Like many fellow homeowners, the latter often leads down a rabbit hole of deferred maintenance projects.

Acommon refrain among our friend group? Countless home appliances to be replaced.

Garden and landscaping projects to embark on. And a rather surprising number of sliding glass doors in need of repair in our collective Southern California homes.

Enter Shy Hadan. Known as Dr. SlideDoor, Shy's father was in the business of selling sliding doors, but when he saw that there was no one to fix them, he stepped in with a solution. “Usually people think they just have to be replaced, but that isn’t the case!

If hauling open your sliding door requires Herculean strength, it’s likely you’re experiencing rollers with dirt and dust buildup so they don’t roll the way they used to. Over the years, it’s common for the rollers to wear to the point that you may actually be dragging the entire weight of the sliding door across the track, which causes even more damage and drag every time you do it.

Whether your door is modern or ancient, made of aluminum, vinyl or wood … all you have to do to “remedy your rolling troubles” is schedule a free inspection. A tech will come out to see if the components can be fixed or replaced, and then...fix it. With over 25 years of industry experience, Dr. Slide-Door is the number one chosen sliding glass door repair service in Southern California. What sets them apart? Each member of Dr. Slide Door’s team arrives with everything you’ll need on site.

“Your sliding door professional will replace the parts right down to the rollers, leaving your door feeling weightless and good as new. You’ll be amazed at how easily your door slides open and closed.”

With parts made in Germany, you can be assured that your “new” door could last another 20 years: plenty of time to tackle out the rest of your resolutions.

BUBBLES MOBILE AUTO DETAIL

There is a specific type of business person I particularly appreciate when utilizing his or her services. One who is detail oriented.

Ryan “Bubbles” Jara is just such a professional. Having been in mobile auto detail business serving Orange County for over 25 years, he must be, and especially since his specialty is restoration and paint correction on classic cars. Bubbles was the plan since the beginning, it seems.

“My uncles restore classic vehicles so I grew up in the industry," he says. "It only made sense to one day have a business of my own bringing cars back to their original glory.”

But what happens before a car becomes a classic? Those of us that pride ourselves on being detail oriented would perhaps note that a regular car wash and wax are in order. Ryan takes it one step further.

you, and handles all of the heavy lifting - from upholstery cleaning to paint protection.

Jara's services include hand wash and wax, interior and exterior detailing, headlight restoration, steam cleaning, ceramic coating, engine bay wash and ... something my minivan could certainly use ... pet hair removal. You name the vehicle, Bubbles will ensure it is looking its finest.

“Having a passion for the cars I’m servicing takes almost no effort - I know I love this work," he says. "The commitment to excellence and knowledge of the chemical industry gives your car its million-dollar shine.”

RV’s, motorcycles, daily drivers, trucks, boats and classic cars. The convenience is unmatched and the product? Well, it’s detailed. And you know I love nothing better.

California Gun Services Safe Gun Storage, Ownership and Disposal

After my grandfather passed away, I moved in with my grandma, doing chores around the house and helping to maintain the garden.

One day, I was looking for my grandfather’s whetstone, to sharpen an old pair of shears, and I stumbled across his Colt Python 357 Magnum. I thought it might be a relic from one of the movies he worked on in the 50’s, but according to my grandma, it was just “one of those things your grandpa just insisted on having.”

Jeff McCabe has gotten more of his fair share of calls from people like myself, who accidentally come across family firearms in their home and don’t have the first idea of what to do with them. The owner of California Gun Services (CGS), Jeff is in the business of safe gun storage, ownership and disposal. The first step? Following California gun laws. I had zero clue that by driving the Colt to the Army Navy to try and turn it in, I’d be breaking a couple laws. According to Jeff there are laws restricting gifting or selling a gun, receiving a gun, borrowing a gun, transporting a gun, even storing guns. New laws come out every year, and it is almost impossible for anyone, even aficionados to keep up with them. Jeff and his team work closely with local law enforcement to ensure the process is easy and safe.

My grandma was afraid the grandkids might find it and would “just feel safer without it.” A sentiment shared by Jeff’s friends, family and fellow church parishionersmany of whom have sought his assistance over the years to ensure the proper storage or disposal of firearms they found themselves in possession of upon the passing of a loved one.

A BUSINESS IS BORN

What initially started as a favor for a friend has grown into a bonafide side business as word has spread about Jeff’s particular skill set and confidence in handling firearms. As the owner of the Orange-based One Way Painting, Jeff often encountered situations whereby he would come across a firearm when moving furniture around for a client prior to starting a painting project.

“Many times, the firearm belonged to my client’s father, grandfather or late husband and she never touched it because she was afraid of guns, but didn’t know how to get rid of it safely,” he says. “So many times these guns are loaded and just stuck in a nightstand or stored under the bed.”

Over the years, Jeff has encountered a variety of different circumstances where individuals seek his assistance in disposing of unwanted firearms. All situations call for professionalism and expertise, but some also require a more delicate approach. One such case was a recent call by a family whose patriarch was once a responsible gun owner, but was now suffering the early signs of dementia. “His family wanted the firearms removed for safety reasons, but the gentleman lawfully owns the guns so it’s important to have a heightened sensitivity so as not to create upset,” says Jeff.

In addition to lay people looking for help, Jeff and his team also assist estate and probate attorneys representing

56

clients who are surviving family members in possession of unwanted firearms to navigate the process of safe gun disposal.

Raised in a family that had firearms for hunting and sporting, Jeff was taught early on how to handle, be respectful and always be safe when handling firearms. Jeff adds that “ … we as Americans have a great privilege to be able to own a firearm, but with that comes an even greater responsibility to not only protect ourselves legally by complying with Federal and State laws, but to protect ourselves, our neighbors and most importantly, our children from all possible dangers associated with firearms.”

San Clemente resident Rhonda Murphy couldn’t agree more. “There are many things to deal with when a loved one dies. In 2010, when cleaning out my husband’s closet, I came across several of his guns. I didn’t want to keep them and was unsure of what to do with them. My daughters didn’t want the guns and I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of storing them as my grandkids are often at my house. A friend suggested I call Jeff. He was very nice, easy to talk with, trustworthy and knowledgeable. He came to my house, checked all the guns to make sure they were unloaded and removed them. Jeff also told me that one of the guns was a collector’s item and was able to sell it for me. One less thing to have to worry about. I can’t recommend Jeff enough.”

As part of their auditing procedures, California Gun Services gives clients the option of a Voluntary Registration Form (in the case where the weapon was inherited). Many of Jeff’s clients are like my grandma who just prefers that the gun is destroyed. Jeff holds a Federal Firearm License and as such, is able to take possession of firearms without a Gun Transfer. He can also inspect firearms to ensure they are still in working order, and even tell you if the gun, or guns, you have is California Compliant.

“Most people are unaware that firearms that were purchased legally from a gun shop just a year ago may now be illegal in California,” says Jeff. “If we find a firearm that is out of compliance with the law, you’ll receive solid advice on how to make it compliant, sell it out of state, or potentially dispose of it. Our process is approved and certified by local law enforcement, it’s legal, safe and adheres to all state and federal firearms laws.

“Since firearms last more than a lifetime, families often have small and large collections of guns in their home. Knowing what you have and what to do with those firearms is important. Whether it’s from a death in the family, inheritance, or just a need for clearing out some that you know you will never use, we can help. Following California gun laws is essential. We come to you. It’s a safe, easy and professional process.”

California Gun Services (714) 639-9608

www.CaliforniaGunServices.com

California Gun Services’ processes are approved and certified by local law enforcement and adheres to all state and federal firearms laws for the following services:

GUN AUDIT

Jeff will come to you and inspect your firearms to make sure they are in proper working order and that they are California Compliant. If your firearm is not compliant with the California Law, you will receive solid advice on how to make it compliant or possibly dispose or sell it out of state.

GUN DISPOSAL

If a firearm is found to be unsafe to use, cannot be repaired and has no historical value. California Gun Services will permanently destroy it by torching the receiver or frame into three parts or cutting it with a saw into five parts. Jeff will document this with photos and log it for the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and email you the proof of destruction.

GUN TRANSFERS

Private Party Transfers happen between two individuals and will need to take place at a Federal Firearm Licensed Dealer. Since this needs to be done at a Gun Shop, Jeff cannot offer this as an in-home service. If you have inherited or legally obtain a firearm, he can provide you with a Voluntary Registration form or you can download it from the California Department of Justice which is NOT required to do at a gun shop. California Gun Services has a Federal Firearm License and can legally come to you and take possession of a firearm without a Gun Transfer.

GUN PURCHASES OF UNWANTED FIREARMS OR COLLECTIONS

California Gun Services will come to you and appraise a single gun or an entire collection of any size. You will receive an explanation of how guns are legally sold and transferred. California Gun Services can then make you a fair market value offer and/or explain how a gun can be put up for sale on consignment.

AMMUNITION AUDIT

California Gun Services will make sure you are using the right ammunition for the firearms that you have and that it is legal in the State of California. Jeff will inspect the ammunition to make sure that it has been stored correctly, is in good condition and will ensure that the ammunition is being stored properly, using the right type of container and stored in the right location in your home.

How to Thrive at Home: The Art of Choosing Incontinence Products for Bladder Leaks

Whether aging in place at home, or residing in a senior living community, older adults living with incontinence face unique health challenges.

The risk of pressure sores, UTI’s, and falls are all unfortunately common problems that occur in these individuals. However, seniors can greatly reduce their risk of these challenges, and subsequently, reduce their risk of ending up in the hospital by choosing high quality incontinence products. Below are two features to look for in an incontinence product.

1. Fully Breathable Products.

Fully breathable products that allow the skin to breathe will reduce the risk of pressure sores.

Without breathability, the person wearing the product may get skin irritations and skin breakdowns. Not only can these skin irritations become very painful, but the worry, and ancillary negative effects (such as possible hospital admission, decreased quality of life, time, and money) are staggering.

In addition to wearing a fully breathable product, choosing skin care products and washcloths that protect

elderly thinning skin are equally as important. Transparent barrier creams and “no water needed” cleansing creams, for example, can aid in reducing risk of irritation.

2. Super Absorbent Products.

Getting a good night’s sleep is important. Super absorbent products are key in helping older adults who have bladder leaks sleep through the night. “Restorative sleep”, the term meaning 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep that allows a person to go through the 4-5 sleep cycles, has many proven benefits, including cell regeneration, tissue healing, hormone regulation, and being more alert in the morning.

If a person is wearing a product that keeps them dry longer, and is made from soft comfortable materials, the likelihood of them staying in bed at night is greater. If they stay in bed, they reduce their risk of falling during the night, whereas others wearing a less absorbent product may wake up in the night, wet and uncomfortable. In turn, that person gets up out of bed groggy and thus a fall may happen. Falls are a leading contributor to hospital admissions. Choosing high quality products helps reduce the risk!

Super absorbent products may also reduce the risk of urinary tract infections in older adults if they are wearing a high-quality product with a double absorbent core that locks

in urine while decreasing bacterial growth. A double absorbent core helps to wick moisture away from the skin quickly, thus keeping people dry and comfortable, while also reducing urine odor.

If you or a loved one are challenged with incontinence, it is recommended that you inquire about high quality products from a specialized provider, such as Mountain View Services. Their customer support staff is well versed about quality products rather than a consumer buying adult briefs or pull-ups in a “big box” store. Their staff can also help guide consumers to proper size & fit, appropriate absorbency levels, styles, etc., which are all factors in promoting confidence, dignity, and overall well-being for people living with incontinence so they can enjoy everyday life activities. Remember to compare overall value versus cost as this is critical to choosing wisely!
