Innovative Post-Hospital Care at The Covington,

an ECS Senior Community in Aliso Viejo

Hospital care has evolved dramatically in the past 30 years, but until recently, post-hospital care has remained the same.

A generation ago, people would be discharged from a long stay in the hospital and be sent to a skilled nursing facility where the average stay was 30 days.

These locations could feel institutional and impersonal in their care, and those recovering would often share rooms with strangers.

“This model was driven by the Medicare reimbursement program,” says Krista Nay, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Episcopal Communities and Services (ECS).

Procedures, such as hip or knee replacements are not as invasive as they used to be, so residents may be released from the hospital after just two or three days. While most would rather be in fa-

miliar surroundings, their spouse or partner may not be capable of providing them with the support they need. Simply put, they aren’t ready to go home just yet.

One of the first multi-level care communities in California to adopt a new model of post-hospital care is The Covington, a secure, gated retirement community in Aliso Viejo.

“We are thrilled to be ahead of the curve,” says Cash Benton, Executive Director of The Covington. In April 2023, The Covington proudly opened five Care Suites. These customized suites offer 24hour nursing care and recovery care to residents returning from a stay in the hospital.

“We knew there was a need for short-term, round-the-clock access to support,” Cash says, “so we designed the Care Suites, specifically for those needing a place to recover before returning to their Covington homes.”

The Suites have a range of exceptional features. The beds can be adjusted to any height, and have specially selected, hypoallergenic mattresses designed for those who might be spending more time in bed. The bathrooms are freshly updated with extra-wide shower entrances. The living areas can accommodate both Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy sessions and have a lift chair for ease of use.

12

To allow for welcoming friends and family, there is a microwave, a full set of dishes and a fridge stocked with snacks. The in-suite dining room table allows residents to eat in their room if they choose, or they can dine with other residents in one of The Covington’s three restaurants. The 60inch TVs allow residents to watch their favorite shows, follow exercise programs, communicate with family and more. “The suites are designed so residents can rehabilitate and recover in comfort,” Krista says.

In addition to the thoughtful amenities, each resident in a Care Suite has access to nursing care if and when needed and has a dedicated Team Member available at all hours. A nurse practitioner admits the resident to the Care Suite and follows up throughout their stay, so residents and their family are assured their care is consistent and monitored.

These new Care Suites are located in the same building as The Covington’s Assisted Living homes and are available to any resident

of The Covington, with a minimum stay of five days. “We’ve adapted to what people want, and their expectations,” Krista says.

Licensed and certified therapists and medical personnel deliver comprehensive care for both short and long-term stays. With these Care Suites, residents get the support they need to return home as soon as possible.

When the resident is cleared to return home, individual treatment plans are customized to both abilities and goals. “A personalized Care Plan may last for a few months, or it could be a lifelong plan,” Cash says. Once the resident returns to their Covington home, they have access to oneon-one nursing care, or floor nursing, where visits are scheduled throughout the day to support the individual’s needs.

The Care Suite model means the person is now home, at The Covington, surrounded by friends and family, and is getting the additional support they need, tailored to their situation. There is also

one point of contact for ongoing care, so they and their loved ones have the confidence and peace of mind that comes from professional, individualized attention and monitoring.

LifeLine magazine called The Covington’s approach “forwardthinking.” They added that “What Episcopal Communities and Services… is initiating at its Covington community is a good example of what such a new approach could look like.”

“We have done surveys with our residents who have stayed in our Care Suites,” Cash says. “We have

• Physical, occupational and speech therapy

had great feedback. Our residents appreciate the level of comfort and support they receive.”

Karen Mauro experienced the Care Suites first-hand, when her friend Jim Espinosa returned to The Covington from the hospital, following a procedure. “The experience has been great,” Karen says. “Jim has recuperated so well.” She noted how seamless the transition was in the Care Suites. “There were so many thoughtful touches,” she says. “All his clothes were in the Care Suite waiting for him.” The long tenure of the Team Members at The Covington supports the transition as well. “And all the staff are so wonderful. They know everyone’s name.”

Karen was struck by the warm, caring environment. “The atmosphere and quality of care give me such a sense of confidence. I’m thrilled that when I think about my future life, should I need it, the Care Suites are available for me,” she says.

These customized Care Suites offer 24-hour nursing care and recovery care for residents returning from the hospital.

“I’ve received calls from other facilities in the country,” Cash says.

“They are interested in what we did and

how we did it.”

The Covington offers a warm welcome to individuals and couples from all backgrounds, cultures, and faiths. Set on 12 leafy acres, with luxury amenities like a heated indoor pool, personalized healthand-wellness plans, koi pond, lush gardens and three dining venues to choose from, the residences deliver the choice, freedom, and flexibility all seniors deserve. Proudly nonprofit, The Covington is one of the exceptional ECS communities in Southern California.

Beware of Lifestyle Creep

Sometimes more money can mean more problems.

“Lifestyle creep” is an unusual phrase describing an all-too-common problem: the more money people earn, the more money they tend to spend.

Frequently, the newly affluent are the most susceptible. As people establish themselves as doctors and lawyers, executives, and successful entrepreneurs, they see living well as a reward. Outstanding education, home, and business loans may not alter this viewpoint. Lifestyle creep can happen to successful individuals of any age. How do you guard against it?

Keep one financial principle in mind: spend less than you make. If you get a promotion, if your business takes off, if you make partner, the additional income you receive can go toward your retirement savings, your investment accounts, or your debts.

See a promotion, a bonus, or a raise as an opportunity to save more. Do you have a household budget? Then the amount of saving that the extra income comfortably permits will be clear. Even if you do not closely track your expenses, you can probably still save (and invest) to a greater degree without imperiling your current lifestyle.

Avoid taking on new fixed expenses that may not lead to positive outcomes. Shouldering a fixed mortgage payment as a condition of home ownership? Good potential

outcome. Assuming an auto loan so you can drive a luxury SUV? Maybe not such a good idea. While the home may appreciate, the SUV will almost certainly not.

Resist the temptation to rent a fancier apartment or home. Few things scream “lifestyle creep” like higher rent does. A pricier apartment may convey an impressive image to your friends and associates, but it will not make you wealthier.

Keep the big goals in mind and fight off distractions. When you earn more, it is easy to act on your wants and buy things impulsively. Your typical day starts costing you more money.

To prevent this subtle, daily lifestyle creep, live your days the same way you always have – with the same kind of financial mindfulness. Watch out for new daily costs inspired by wants rather than needs.

Live well, but not extravagantly. After years of law school or time toiling at start-ups, getting hired by the right firm and making that career leap can be exhilarating – but it should not be a gateway to runaway debt. According to the Federal Reserve’s latest Survey of Consumer Finances, the average American head of household aged 35-44 carries slightly more than $100,000 of non-housing debt. This is one area of life where you want to be below average.1

Cefali & Cefali, APC Trusted Accident Attorneys for the Most Serious Injuries

It’s a remarkable feeling when you can find someone to take your side. In relationships, sports: you name it. That one person who believes in you, makes you better, fights alongside you.

Michael Cefali matched with his person (his wife Courtney) long before law school - but their partnership extended through the long years studying for the bar and paid off in an even match that has stacked up in their favor many times over. Graduates of Chapman Law and California Western, respectively, they started the San Juan Capistrano-based Cefali & Cefali, APC in July of 2019 and have been fighting for the little guy ever since. From setting clients up with top-tier doctors and specialists, to negotiating stellar settlements, Cefali & Cefali, APC handles cases from start to finish with client health as their top priority.

Focusing on all aspects of personal injury, the Cefalis are what you might expect in such a ring: passionate, aggressive, and most importantly, honest - all traits that have contributed to the couple having recovered millions of dollars per year on behalf of their clients since opening their firm.

“The insurance companies would like you to think that they get to determine the value of your injuries, your suffering,” says Michael. “We’ll fight for every last penny because we know that you deserve it.” Clients appreciate the work that the Cefalis do. In fact, as of the date of this publication, you won’t find a single negative review of their firm anywhere on the internet.

Client Jamie shares, “I am so grateful for everything that Mike Cefali and his team did for me! Not only was he able to help me get what I was owed in my settlement and then some, but he was so responsive and kind and

it was very apparent that he cared about me and my case! He and his team are so HONEST and FAIR and it was clear from start to finish that he had my best interest in mind! Not only is he a good lawyer but he is a good person which made a world of difference for me. I could not have asked for a better experience with a personal injury attorney! I have already recommended him to all of my friends and I will continue to recommended him to anyone looking for a good lawyer! Thank you so much Cefali and Cefali!”

Another client Carrie echoes Jamie’s sentiment, “My husband and I were rear-ended on the freeway. We felt bad thinking of contacting a lawyer, but after several months of continuous pain and medical treatments, a friend recommended Michael Cefali. From the beginning, he lived up to his core values of integrity, loyalty, and vigorous advocacy. Michael is a dedicated, friendly, and competent attorney who seamlessly represented our interests and ensured the outcome was in our favor. He treated us not like a client, but like family; he

18

was there any time we needed him. He was empathetic to our situation and worked tirelessly with all parties to represent us. We don’t trust many people, but we trust Michael and his team and would highly recommend him to anyone seeking a professional, effective, and focused attorney.”

With five staff members to back up the stellar work Michael and Courtney produce, the couple remain incredibly hands on, based on a culture of empathy, integrity and advocacy.

“We craft each case personally, build each one for trial, and remain accessible to clients,” says Michael. “Personal injury attorneys get a bad rap when really we’re the good guys. I like to think of our firm as a pirate ship. Nimble, clever, and tenacious in spite of being outspent by the adversary, we pry money from greedy insurance companies and give it to our very deserving clients.”

Giving back is the spirit of the firm, and community work creates a direct link between Michael, Courtney, and their circle in San Juan Capistrano. The couple and their team proudly supports a number of local charitable and community organizations including: The Boys and Girls Club of Capistrano Valley (Courtney is on the Board of Directors), The San Juan Capistrano Friends of the Library (Courtney is also a board member), CREER, the Pacific Marine Mammal Foundation, and Project Coyote. Michael is a member of the San Juan Capistrano Rotary Club and has been recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow.

The Cefali team’s ethics, constant communication (every client is given Michael’s personal cell phone for easy accessibility), commitment to their clients and involvement in the community keeps everyone growing stronger and healthier together. Remarkable isn’t it, that feeling when someone takes your side?

How Can I Tell If I Have Skin Cancer?

There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.

DERMATOLOGY & AESTHETIC CENTER 23141 Moulton Parkway, Suite 110, Laguna Hills | (949) 916-5956
FLEMING
20
Kristy Fleming, MD, Double Board-Certified in Dermatology and Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery

Look especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.

ACTINIC KERATOSIS

An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.

SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.

BASAL CELL CARCINOMA

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.

MELANOMA

Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.

WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW

1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.

2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life.

3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling

A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?

B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin?

C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?

D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.

E - Evolution: Has it changed?

F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others?

4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

Dispelling Myths and Highlighting the Superiority of Ketamine Therapy for Depression and Anxiety: A COMPREHENSIVE EXPLORATION

Ketamine therapy has emerged as a potential game-changer in the realm of depression and anxiety treatment. However, amidst the excitement, misinformation and myths have taken root.

Q1: Myth - Ketamine therapy is just another trendy treatment and offers no real advantages over conventional therapies. Is this true?

A: Contrary to this belief, ketamine therapy offers distinct advantages over traditional treatments. While antidepressants and psychotherapy remain important tools, ketamine therapy’s rapid onset of action can provide quicker relief for severe symptoms. It targets different pathways in the brain, which can be especially effective for individuals who haven’t responded well to other approaches.

Q2: Myth - Ketamine therapy is only a short-term fix and doesn’t provide lasting benefits. Is that accurate?

A: Ketamine therapy’s effects can extend beyond the immediate treatment period. Research has shown that the positive impact of ketamine on neural pathways can lead to lasting changes in mood regulation. Unlike traditional therapies like SSRIs which require daily use and often escalating doses, Ketamine’s lasting effects can lead to permanent relief of symptoms or for some they only need the occasional maintenance session every few months to sustain these benefits.

Q3: Myth - Ketamine therapy is risky and has dangerous side effects, mak-

ing it less safe than traditional treatments. Is this a valid concern?

A: Ketamine therapy, when administered under medical supervision, is considered safe and well-tolerated. Like any treatment, it may have mild side effects, but these are typically short-lived and manageable. Traditional treatments can also have side effects, and the safety profile of ketamine therapy is comparable or even superior in certain cases.

Q4: Myth - Ketamine therapy is only suitable for severe cases and doesn’t cater to those with milder symptoms. Is this a misconception?

A: Ketamine therapy can be tailored to individuals across a spectrum of severity, from moderate to severe cases. Unlike traditional treatments that often follow a one-size-fits-all approach, ketamine therapy’s versatility allows for personalized dosing and treatment plans, making it an adaptable option for a wider range of patients.

Q5: Myth - Ketamine therapy lacks scientific backing and is experimental, unlike traditional therapies. Is this an accurate assessment?

A: Ketamine therapy’s efficacy has been supported by a growing body of scientific research. Studies have demonstrated its potential to produce rapid and sustained improvements in mood and anxiety symptoms. While traditional therapies have a solid foundation, ketamine therapy’s innovative approach and promising results make it a formida-

ble contender in the treatment landscape.

Q6: Myth - Ketamine therapy is too expensive and inaccessible compared to traditional treatments. Is this a valid concern?

A: While cost can be a factor, the affordability of ketamine therapy is evolving as it becomes more widely recognized and integrated into clinical practice. Additionally, the potential for quicker and more effective relief with ketamine therapy could lead to reduced healthcare costs in the long run, making it a financially viable option for many.

Q7: Myth - Ketamine therapy is a standalone treatment and cannot be combined with traditional therapies for better outcomes. Is this true?

A: Ketamine therapy can complement traditional treatments, enhancing their effectiveness. Integrating ketamine therapy with psychotherapy or medication can lead to synergistic effects.

Q8: Myth - Ketamine therapy is addictive and poses a risk of substance abuse, unlike traditional treatments. Is this a genuine concern?

A: Ketamine therapy, when administered by healthcare professionals, is

Dr. Justin Yanuck, Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician and Board Certified Pain Medicine Physician and Dr. Tanya Dall, Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician
22

closely monitored to minimize the risk of addiction. Traditional treatments, such as certain antidepressants, also carry the potential for dependence. Ketamine’s controlled usage and medical supervision ensure that addiction risk is comparable to or even lower than that of traditional treatments; furthermore, ketamine therapy has been shown to be an effective medication to treat certain addictions.

Q9: Myth - Ketamine therapy’s effects are only surfacelevel and don’t address the root causes of depression and anxiety like traditional therapies do. Is this accurate?

A: Ketamine therapy’s unique mechanism of action allows it to rapidly modulate brain pathways related to mood regulation. Ketamine leads to neuroplasticity which results in new neural connections forming which can lead to permanent resolution of one’s symptoms. THis stands in stark contrast to many traditional psychiatric medications which serve only blunt symptoms, without fundamentally changing any of the neurobiological framework.

Q10: Myth - Ketamine therapy is just a temporary fad and will eventually be replaced by more advanced traditional treatments. Is there any truth to this?

A: Ketamine therapy’s rapid rise is not a mere fad. Ketamine has been FDA approved since 1970, and clinical trials using ketamine for mental health conditions and chronic pain have been going on for 25 years. Thousands of peer reviewed articles have been written proving ketamine’s efficacy and superiority to many traditional therapies. As our understanding of ketamine’s mechanisms deepens, it is likely to continue playing a significant role alongside traditional treatments, potentially revolutionizing how we approach depression and anxiety.

While myths about ketamine therapy for depression and anxiety persist, a thorough examination reveals its superiority over traditional treatments in various aspects. From its rapid onset of action and potential for long-term benefits to its personalized approach and ability to enhance other therapies, ketamine therapy stands as a promising and innovative option. It is important to engage in open conversations with healthcare providers to make informed decisions tailored to individual needs, ultimately harnessing the power of ketamine therapy to create a brighter future for those grappling with depression and anxiety.

Pets of the Month

Say hello to Honey Bun, a beautiful spayed female gray-and-white Harlequin rabbit. A curious bunny about a year and a half old, she is fairly active and enjoys exploring new surroundings. Though she can be a tad shy at times, she has a sweet personality and is learning to trust new visitors. Honey Bun has great litter box habits and would make a lovely addition to a quiet, loving family.

Handsome guy Tex is a wonderful pup now available for adoption. About one and half years old, Tex is relatively calm for his age and often prefers snuggling by your side to more active pursuits. He is potty trained, gets along with family members of all ages, and would make a great addition to just about any home.

PAWS on the GO

This pretty girl is Roma a three year old Tortie who is still hoping for her chance at her forever home. Just having reached her two year anniversary of arriving at the shelter, Roma has now spent the majority of her life waiting for her perfect adopters. She is a curious cat with a sweet personality, but can be a bit reserved until she gets to know you. Roma is looking for a patient adopter who will take the time to let her settle in and feel comfortable. Could you be the one she’s been waiting for?

Tommy Tutone/When In Rome II

Tommy Tutone: 867-5309 ... what’s in a number? That jangly, arpregiated guitar intro, those four familiar chords in the verses, that phone number. Tutone’s 867-5309/Jenny is instantly recognizable as one of the best pop/rock singles of the 1980s (The Boss Booking Agency).

When in Rome was an electro-dance trio from England that had a worldwide hit with the Single “THE PROMISE” in 1988. In 2006, When in Rome’s founding member Michael Floreale recruited a great new singer, Los Angeles based John Ceravolo, and the pair instantly bonded to form a powerful songwriting team. The haunting melodies of Floreale’s music flows seamlessly with Ceravalo’s insightful lyrics and soaring vocals.

John has distinguished himself as one of the most talented artists that has ever come from Hawaii. He was named the Best Singer Songwriter by Hawaii Magazine in 2008. Today, over 1 million people stream Cruz’s music every year as he enjoys regular plays on SiriusXM, prominent features on hit Playing for Change videos (“The Weight”, “Jokerman” and “All Along The Watchtower”).

Tavern

at the Mission

Home to the incredible swallow migration, San Juan Capistrano boasts a uniquely rich cultural history, old town charm and one of the region’s most popular eateries: Tavern at the Mission.

Situated in the heart of the city’s glittering mis sion district directly across from the Mission itself, Tavern at the Mission’s menu showcases signature innovative culinary creations and happy hour exclusives.

For starters, the grilled-to-perfection filet mignon skewers paired with forest mushrooms, pearl onions and Bernaise sauce are worth writing home about, as are any of the Tavern’s generous dinner salads (Santa Fe Caesar, Brown Derby Cobb and my personal favorite - the the super flavorful Buddha Bowl brimming with red basmati rice, baby vegetables, avocado and goat cheese).

Other popular entrees range from seafood specialties (a BBQ Spiced Salmon accompanied by creamed corn, sauteed baby spinach, paprika infusion and bacon dust and Tequila Shrimp Pasta enhanced with green chile pesto, garlic, parmesan and toasted pumpkin seeds) to delicious options designed to satisfy even the most discriminating of meat eaters. My husband, who falls firmly into the latter category, thoroughly enjoyed the flavorful “French Onion” filet mignon that arrived in its own cast iron skillet of signature onion soup and Guyere cheese and is looking forward to a return visit to sample the short rib stroganoff.

Longtime South County denizen renowned for his hand in creating scores of concept restaurants across Orange County (Kachina, Bistro 201, French 75, Chat Noir, Sorrento Grill, Savannah Chop House and Jimmy’s Famous American Tavern), David Wilhelm took over the space once occupied by the Cedar Creek Inn. He and his partner Gregg Solomon maintained its original character while infusing new life into every aspect of its design, decor and cuisine.

Dishes here draw inspiration from the region’s multicultural roots (think the flavors of Mexico, Spain and Europe) and Wilhelm’s own signature creations like French 75’s onion soup enhanced with a thyme, sherry, Gruyere glaze.

Our teenage kids also have their own favorite “go to” signature dishes. Our son is all about the D’s Honey Buttermilk Fried Chicken and half-pound prime Angus sirloin burger, while my daughter can’t get enough of the Coconut Crusted Shrimp with horseradish-marmalade and Dijon sauces.

Fan favorites of Cedar Creek Inn’s ridiculously decadent Coconut Cake will be thrilled to find it a menu mainstay.

Easy, Breezy, Beautiful: Spring has Sprung at Lazy Dog

The first days of spring are the most beautiful of the year, in my opinion.

Soft light, warm air, daffodils poking through damp soil. Living in sunny southern California means we lean into microseasons - minute shifts in nature’s timekeeping to let us know when longer days are on the horizon. As a fledgling foodie, one of the most exciting parts of spring are the seasonal options to boost a culinary experience.

Full disclosure: I am a longtime fan of Lazy Dog, dating back to the days of its original location in Huntington Beach in 2003. I started HB Magazine in the same month and the restaurant served as the site of the publication launch party.

Three years later, when I introduced Orange Magazine the same month that the leadership team opened their second location it seemed only natural to host another launch party at Lazy Dog. It became a running joke to see where we’d both end up next.

Lazy Dog Cafe, now a SoCal staple, grew out of founder Chris Simms’ experience as a kid in a mountain town: lots of from scratch ingredients, local flavor, and the warmth you might expect from a spot where everyone knows what’s on the harvest list. In Simms’ case, flavors from his native Wyoming - such as wild, sweet huckleberries - have woven their way into the elevated dishes and specialty drinks on co-founder Chef Gabriel Caliendo’s inventive menu.

Perfect for a celebratory night out, a family meal or an after-work trip to the bar to unwind, Lazy Dog is launching new spring menu items to its already extensive offerings (think seafood delights, steak and bison classics, a flavorful salad, a Roadtrip™ Bowl that is a modern twist on chicken and waffles, plus a celebratory treat and a creative, innovative take on a cocktail using an iconic squeeze bottle).

With 48 locations across the country and more on the way, Lazy Dog has clearly far outpaced my growth, but I’ve happily indulged over years in their establishments close to home (Orange, Irvine/Tustin, Brea). So I was particularly excited to catch up with Chef Caliendo in his Brea tasting kitchen to sample the latest of his popular culinary offerings.

Sweet, savory, spicy? Seafood entree, meat-and-potatoes or chicken and waffles? Cubans and Chocolate Mousse. All you have to do is choose. Partial to seafood, I loved sampling the new spicy tuna crispy rice which starts with sashimi grade tuna poke tossed with spicy garlic crunch atop crispy sushi rice + guacamole, then finished with a housemade umami sauce drizzle, fresh jalapeño and furikake.

My husband and son already fancy themselves aficionados of the sweet + spicy St. Louis style ribs, flash-fried until crispy, brushed with sweet + spicy Korean gochugaru sauce, served with peanut sesame slaw + umami fries. My sweet-tooth daughter, on the other hand, will undoubtedly go straight for the Confetti Cake, with its rich buttercream frosting, rainbow sprinkles, and vanilla bean ice cream.

40
Lazy Dog TV Dinner

Inspired by the convenient frozen meals that became a mainstay in busy American households in the 1950s, Lazy Dog’s rendition are perfect for this busy mom whose culinary repertoire is limited to the same five rotating dishes. With eight different abundant dinners priced at just $10 (feeds 1-2), it’s a win-win. All I have to do is pop the trays in the oven and my family gets to enjoy a delicious, restaurant-quality meal (entree, side and dessert) at home. A recent example is the Shepherd’s Pie - slowcooked savory beef + vegetable stew topped with red skin mashers and melted jack + cheddar cheeses, served with garlic butter broccoli and a chocolate chip brownie. As a special offer, guests can order five TV dinners and get one free.

So, if all you want to do is roll the windows down and head outside for a picnic, or just take an early spring weekend off of cooking, look no further than your local Lazy Dog.

THE SHOW

Written and directed by David Shiner, KOOZA pays tribute to traditional circus in all its splendor with audacious acrobatic prowess and bold slapstick comedy. Filled with chills, thrills, laughter, and wonder, KOOZA unfolds a non-stop, adrenaline-packed series of edge-of-your-seat surprises. The self-discovery adventures of the Innocent who is suddenly transported into an exotic, yet zany kingdom filled with many surprises. Through his journey, the Innocent will meet a panoply of characters: the Trickster, the King and the clowns.

Critics have hailed KOOZA, calling it “stunning…it’s wacky, it’s the circus, it’s the vibe” (KQED), “sumptuously beautiful” (San Francisco Chronicle), and “captivating…everything you want a modern circus to be” (Theater Dogs).

Acclaimed the world over since its opening in 2007, KOOZA has mesmerized close to 8M spectators with over 4,500 performances in 65 cities across 22 countries. The name KOO-

ZA is inspired by the Sanskrit word “koza,” which means “box,” “chest” or “treasure,” and was chosen because one of the underlying concepts of the production is the idea of a “circus in a box.”

A THRILLING RIDE

Undeniably the most daring Cirque du Soleil touring production, KOOZA takes audiences on a thrilling emotional ride with its nail-biting, mind-boggling acrobatics. Inspired by traditional circus arts from around the globe, the show’s performances display remarkable showmanship, exceptional execution, and incredible agility – notably in the High Wire, Teeterboard and Wheel of Death acts. Discover the Charm of Little Italy

San Diego’s Hidden Gem

One of the most charming and idyllic cities on this state’s golden coast, San Diego has so many options for entertainment and delight. Nestled in the heart of America’s Finest City lies a cultural gem that captures the essence of Italy without ever leaving the shores of California. So when I planned a special “Mom + Me” staycation with my 16-yearold daughter last month, I would have been hard pressed to find a more ideal locale than Little Italy, San Diego.

As the most venerable, continuously existing neighborhood business district downtown, Little Italy was originally the place many immigrant Italian and Portuguese fishing families called home. The canneries that processed their catches dotted the coastlineearning the area the well-deserved moniker of “tuna capital of the Western U.S.” - a distinction the district enjoyed until the late 1970s when increasing competition from foreign tuna processors spelled the untime-

ly demise of the beloved community’s chief economic engine.

Today, the once quaint fishing village is a bustling neighborhood is rife with rich history, beautiful retail spaces, breweries, wineries, galleries, lovely hotels and authentic eateries showcasing cuisine from both Northern and Southern Italy.

WHERE TO STAY

For this overnight mother/daughter adventure, I was hoping for a locale steps away from the heart of all the activities and attraction and couldn’t

have selected a lovelier accommodation than the chic Carte Hotel (a Curio Collection by Hilton property). An ode to its locale, its ambiance calls on the coastal environs to influence not only the chosen color palette in soothing shades of blue, but also in its decor defined by beach-inspired art elements. Replete with elevated amenities, this stylish, airy and lightfilled 16-story boutique hotel was an ideal home base - literally a short stroll to the bay and within easy walking distance to virtually everything we wanted to experience during our stay from the aforementioned restaurants to the San Diego Bay and bayfront Embarcadero.

Carte Hotel
44

Carte Hotel features 246 individualized and modern guest rooms (think sophisticated design and expansive views a la floor-to-ceiling windows), a 28,000-square-foot Fit Athletic Club, heated saltwater pool and whirlpool and the cherry on top - Above Ash, a gorgeous rooftop venue with spectacular views of the city skyline and the bay beyond - with numerous fire pits and an enormous LED TV wall for viewing sporting events or outdoor movies.

A DAY AT LEISURE

Arguably, its “crown jewel,” the 10,000-square-foot European- style Piazza della Famiglia - located in the “heart” of the Little Italy neighborhood on W. Date Street - connects India and Columbia Streets. A beautiful tiled fountain sits at the east side and tables and chairs with umbrellas line the cobblestone street—inviting the public to take in the San Diego Bay views over a leisurely meal with friends and family.

With that in mind, the first stop on our itinerary was to fuel up for the day’s activities and landed on a decidedly different brunch experience than we’ve ever enjoyed. Not your typical breakfast nook, Morning Glory (morningglorybreakfast.com) is a stunning pink palace of global breakfast goodness defined by expertly executed dishes and a hilariously written menu festooned with

equally inspired illustrations. But the real showstopper here is the dizzying array of egg dishes, pancake options (think fluffy, delicate) and even “breakfast dim sum” served via a roaming Bodega queen on the weekends (which is worth writing home about - super yummy and fun).

Popular picks? Seasonal skillet pancakes, ginger fried rice, the caviar tasting (soft scrambled eggs, Royal White sturgeon caviar), the French omelet (a bare-

ly set, rolled-style omelet enhanced with goat cheese and chives) and a Lobster Benedict with buttered leeks, poached eggs and Bernaise.

Little Italy beckons with a wellness-centric charm with a plethora of hair and nail salons, spa services and a variety of retail shops. Post brunch, our next stop was for a bit of pampering with mid-afternoon facials at Brazilia Skin Care (BraziliaSkinCare. com). Established in San Diego over two decades ago by Exelda Imeran, Brazilia remains a woman-owned small business and is operated by her two daughters Gia and Ashton.

Brazilia’s highly experienced and skilled aestheticians certainly knew how to get our skin glowing. The award-winning beauty and wellness spa offers just about every day spa service imaginable for men and women ranging from the luxurious facials that my daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed to specialized skin peels, massages, body wraps, body bronzing,

microderm abrasion, lashes and lash extensions, custom eyebrow shaping (via waxing or threading) and bikini-ready Brazilian waxing.

DESTINATION DINING

As they say ... “when in Rome” ... we were excited to experience a “new generation of Italian cuisine - fresh, light and authentic Calabrian cuisine at Civico 1845 (civico1845.com).

The restaurant (which also bears the distinction of being the very first in the nation with a full vegan Italian menu) pays homage to the owners Dario and Pietro Gallo’s Southern Italian roots and reflects what is being served in Italy today. With a menu that focuses on locally grown seasonal ingredients, the brothers strive to “bring to the United States this transformation of simplicity where tradition meets health; every bite tells a story of timeless flavors refined for modern well-being.”

For our part, all my daughter and I knew was that each plate that arrived featured memorably mouthwatering cuisine. The Fritto di Mare - lightly fried calamari, shrimp, zucchini and lime mayo - was a hit with my daughter, who is a bit of a connoisseur having sampled her fair share of variations of the popular appetizer over the years. The Fusilli alla Norma arrived as homemade fusilli pasta (is there anything better than pasta made from

scratch?) with tomato sauce, eggplant, buffalo mozzarella and basil while the seared salmon with pesto risotto was exceptionally delicious.

As indulgent meals were clearly a theme of this excursion, we welcomed an opportunity for one last decadent dish before heading home. Inspired by exploring the history of the islands and Latin American regions of the Caribbean Ocean, the menu at Coco Maya (inlovewiththecoco.com) showcases European flavors and cooking techniques with the core of the kitchen coming from the coal-fired Josper oven. Hints of

ocean, smoke and char reverberate through all of the dishes.

A daily brunch menu features unique options I discovered for the first time including the Bokit - a fry bread from the islands of Guadeloupe stuffed with scrambled egg, hashbrown, cheese sauce and cherrywood bacon - yum! The Lobster Caviar Benedict and the Very Berry French Toast are the definition of decadence. The first arrives with a pair of poached eggs, Maine lobster claw, osetra caviar, tarragon Hollandaise sauce atop Kolache bread (a sweet Czech pastry), while the latter starts with the same Kolache bread enhanced with fresh seasonal fruit and Marscapone cream.

With its rich tapestry of culture, cuisine, and community spirit, it’s no wonder that this charming neighborhood continues to enchant visitors from near and far. We thoroughly enjoyed immersing ourselves in the sights, sounds and flavors of Little Italy and would welcome an opportunity for a similar return sojourn in the nottoo-distant future. Buon viaggio!

Benny and Mary’s Whimsical World

Divine Irvine eatery where dining becomes an adventure

Ordinary meals are transformed into extraor dinary experiences at Benny and Mary’s, one of Irvine’s newest and arguably most imaginative of eateries.

Culinary delights, inventive craft cocktails and an im mersive atmosphere were the hallmarks of a recent enchanting evening out when my husband, Tim, and I met up with our fellow fledgling foodie friends.

Alliteration aside, Benny and Mary’s more than lived up to its advance press of “eclectic style and distinct personality.” The seventh restaurant endeavor of husband-and-wife team Cynthia Vigil and Chad Reinhardt, “Benny and Mary” are fictitious characters created to lend a sense of whimsy to their latest destination dining concept.

Diners are invited into the “home” of this eccentric couple - a sprawling space that is at once welcoming, warm and wholly unique. There’s quite a lot going on inside in terms of contrast-

Ingredients are locally sourced. Culinary creations are fresh, vibrant and bright - the beet tarragon salad is sure to rank among my favorites - enhanced with spiced yogurt greens, herbs, hazelnuts and cranberries.

I lean toward seafood, while my husband is a meat-and-potatoes man. So I was thrilled to discover an abundance of specialties to appeal to even the most discerning of palates.

Shucked oysters, seared octopus, a divine hamachi crudo (tossed in yuzu vinaigrette with fresh shaved fennel and pear relish) and an equally delish Baja shrimp ceviche. Love shellfish? Try the Lobster aglio e olio - a perfectly al dente pasta dish defined by Maine claw meat sauteed in fresh garlic, crushed red pepper and herbs in extra virgin olive oil.

Unsurprisingly, Tim opted for the filet mignon - which arrived grilled-to-perfection accompanied by pomme puree, confit tomato and Bernaise.

ing fabrics, patterns and textures (think faux crocodile pillars, custom-made chandeliers, intriguing artwork and a preponderance of velvet).

This flight of fancy air of sophistication translates to its elevated lunch, dinner and weekend brunch menu featuring items with a flair for fun, delicious and even some that are unapologetically funky (grilled cheese dumplings and tomato bisque served in spoon).

For a sweet ending to an indulgent evening, one standout dessert was a huge hit - a shareable whiskey brioche bread pudding with caramelized pears, salted caramel and spiced whipped cream.

Universal Studios Hollywood

World-Famous Behind-the-Scenes Studio Tour Attraction Celebrates 60 Years a Milestone

In 1964, Universal Studios Hollywood, originally referred to as Universal City Studios, rolled out its fleet of Glamor Trams, inviting tourists to “see film rushes of current productions, both feature and television, being made at Universal City."

While much has transpired in six decades and 200 million guests since its inception, the Studio Tour has remained true to its roots of immersing visitors in the awe-inspiring world of movie-making magic and providing remarkable access to production sets on a real studio lot. The once celebrated Glamor Trams are long gone and have been replaced with a contemporary 60-minute experience, infused with advanced technology that enlightens and entertains millions of film buffs,

depicting a small town devastated by an elaborately choreographed 747 jetliner crash and surrounded by wreckage and debris.

In 2019, “Jurassic World—The Ride” brought to life Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment’s JURASSIC WORLD blockbuster films with the addition of technologically advanced mechanical and special effects dinosaurs from the movie, including the colossal Indominus rex and the magnificent aquatic Mosasaurus.

Other attractions along the tour include “King Kong 360-3D" inspired

theme park fans and tourists alike visiting from across the globe.

Today's Studio Tour ushers guests past iconic sets from the renowned film Psycho directed by Alfred Hitchcock – one of the very first film sets accessible for visitors to see up close and personal in 1964 – to the evolution of Universal Studios Hollywood innovative, groundbreaking rides and attractions themed to compelling film and television properties.

“Jaws Lake,” which took a bite out of the studio backlot in 1976 has withstood the test of time as one of today’s premier Studio Tour attractions. In 1989, “Earthquake” had guests clinging for their lives with its fabricated but eerily realistic 8.3 magnitude quake.

In 2005, an original movie set from Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster, War of the Worlds landed onto the backlot - trams traverse a key scene

by filmmaker Peter Jackson’s Oscar®-winning film and the original Jupiter’s Claim set from Jordan Peele’s expansive horror epic NOPE.

The Studio Tour just touches on the spectrum of adventure at Universal Studios Hollywood, where entertainment options are inclusive of daily theme park operations and acclaimed seasonal and special events. From its engaging character interactions, popular Halloween Horror Nights and Grinchmas™ celebrations to the VIP Experience, a premium off-shoot of the iconic Studio Tour with enhanced behind-the-scenes access, there is so much to see and do at Universal Studios Hollywood…with much more on the way.

Grande Colonial Hotel

Experience Timeless Elegance, Coastal Charm and Exceptional Hospitality in the Heart

Fabulous, fascinating, festive, flawless, fractious. I know, the last one doesn’t really fit in. But honestly, when our family’s recent stay ended at the Grande Colonial Hotel in La Jolla, I was feeling particularly irritable. Not because the visit disappointed in any way. In fact, completely the contrary.

The first few adjectives are just a few contributing feelings that I have come to associate with what is easily among

the loveliest of accommodations in the heart of San Diego’s stunning seaside town. One that our family has been blessed to experience as a favored stay-cation destination over the years. It’s just that we had to drive away.

This picturesque property is situated amidst the pristine beaches and regal bluffs steps from Ellen Browning Scripp’s Park - a lovely recreation area adjacent to La Jolla Cove (where you can peruse the handcrafted wares of

of La Jolla

local artisans each weekend) and a stone’s throw from Gregory Peck’s famous La Jolla Playhouse. Our recent sojourn found me fantasizing about the possibility of taking up permanent residence in the region one day. I suppose it’s just because I can’t wait to return, and the feeling of going back again (and hopefully again!) will bring me the same sense of repose, reflection and relaxation I’ve come to identify with this gorgeous coastal respite.

52

The only Four Diamond Hotel in the Village of La Jolla, the Grande Colonial has been welcoming guests for over a century. One of San Diego’s oldest original seaside hotels, this intimate, iconic hotel has been completely modernized, yet remains faithful to the timeless elegance of its storied past - the sophisticated decor infused with a classic European ambiance and aesthetic.

From spacious guest rooms and suites with scenic views of the village, the gorgeous garden courtyard, or the sparkling Pacific Ocean, the Grande Colonial is simply a breathtaking sanctuary. With a Michelin-rated restaurant on site (the casually elegant NINETEN Restaurant & Bar serving up locally sourced, globally inspired farm-

to-table cuisine), heated outdoor swimming pool and beach gear up for grabs, planning the day (and evening) is a simple pleasure.

If you’d rather tool around town, there’s a London Cab or golf cart ready to transport you straight into the village or stroll the charming streets with leisurely stops in the abundant art galleries, bou-

tiques, specialty shops and trendy neighborhood coffee klatches.

For our part, we loved ordering in for breakfast “al fresco” enjoyed on the patio outside our accommodation. The fluffy lemon buttermilk pancakes were every bit as delicious as they sound. Sipping coffee while watching seagulls soar and pelicans skim the surface of the sparkling waters below, the faint sound of barking sealions and their pups frolicing in the waves - I can’t think of a lovelier way while away a lazy morning.

Hotel stays include day-pass access to local fitness facilities within easy walking distance. Indulge in an inroom massage, spend the day playing in the sand and surf, borrow the hotel’s bikes to explore the streets or take a scenic seaside stroll at sunset. Or do it all. Just know when it’s time to go, you may as well book another stay on the spot so as not to lament having to leave.

BRING DOWN THE HOUSE WITH THE

I haven’t been a kid in a while. What I recall about music lessons is that they were forced, and more importantly, stodgy.

Beginning somewhere around the fourth grade, students were advised to pick an instrument for class, and I can honestly say I only know two adults from those classes who still play those instruments today. Needless to say, my music classes were nothing like the offering at School of Rock Huntington Beach.

A unique community of teachers, musicians, and families, School of Rock Huntington Beach sounds exactly like what it is, and also nothing like what it truly means. Founded in 2014 by a trio of performers, educators, and business owners, the industry welcomed them onto the scene with open arms. Larry Boodman, an alum of the Orange County School of the Arts, and Jeff Nunes were members of an L.A-based indie rock group known as Fourwayfree. Joey Acona, a production and performance instructor at OCSA for many years, knew Boodman through their common connections.

“The School of Rock was borne from the desire to create a safe place for supportive collaboration among students, and has instilled confidence, self-esteem, and discipline that will serve them well into the future pur-

suit of any goal, not just music," says Jeff.

Practical instruction meets professional performance education. The students learn on guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, or vocals. But their weekly private lesson is combined with a weekly group rehearsal, “as the students prepare for an actual rock show that they perform at the end of the season. Themed - ACDC, Arena Rock, or Grunge. And played on professional stages like the House of Blues Anaheim.”

If you’re not sure what you’d like to specialize in just yet, no worries. School of Rock Huntington Beach provides a free trial lesson to anyone interested, and all are welcome to give them a try. Ages 6 to adult are brought into the fold, and “given the chance to learn team work, practice commitment, and master their chosen instrument. It makes learning not only fun and engaging, but a team sport.” Glad I don’t have to be a kid to go back to School (of Rock).

Soaring Beyond Limits: The Thrill of iFly Indoor Skydiving

Unlike many of my friends who rave about adrenaline rush of skydiving, I have a fear of heights and have never understood the impulse to jump out of a perfectly good airplane.

But when my 17-year-old son expressed an interest in defying gravity on our recent mother/son day in San Diego, I signed us up to experience the exhilaration of flight - in a safe, controlled environment where thrill-seekers of all ages can spread their wings and soar.

From the moment we stepped into iFly Indoor Skydiving’s sleek, futuristic facility in San Diego’s Mission Valley, anticipation electrified the air. The

hum of wind turbines filled the space our experienced instructor guided us through a brief educational training session in advance of the adventure ahead.

After donning our flight suits, goggles and helmets, we took turns in the vertical wind tunnel for “low” and “high” flights. Gravity lost its grip, and our bodies effortlessly ascended, suspended in mid-air. My son mastered more “moves” than his mother, adjusting his hand movements to spin in one direction, then the other, and propelling his body forward and backward. For my part, I was just thrilled to experience the freedom of weightlessness, buoyed by the force of the wind.

Beyond its adrenaline-fueled appeal, I can see how iFly fosters a sense of camaraderie among its participants. From families seeking a unique bonding experience and corporate teams looking to build trust and cohesion to kids taking to the air with their friends for birthday celebrations, iFly offers a shared adventure that transcends age, background, and ability (with

adaptive equipment, individuals with disabilities can also take to the sky).

As the wind tunnel echoes with laughter and shouts of exhilaration, it’s clear that iFly Indoor Skydiving isn’t just a destination – it’s a gateway to limitless possibilities whether you’re a seasoned thrill-seeker or a first-time flyer. My son is already angling for a return trip to advance to “next level” flips and spins. Sounds like another “Mom + Me” adventure is on the horizon.

OF BUILDING MEANINGFUL RELATIONSHIPS

What really matters to you? You might have such thoughts as health, time, learning, experiences, love, faith, family and friends. We would mostly all agree, it’s the people in our lives and the relationships we foster that matter most. Relationships make our lives richer and more complete.

We spoke to Segal Ronen, President of Your Home Care Inc. about what they do, the benefits of home care and how important it is to build relationships with the people they serve

Q: Tell us a little bit about Your Home Care and what it is that you do.

A: At Your Home Care our mission is to enrich the quality of life of se-

niors by providing compassionate caregiving services in your home. The agency was created in 2003 and is family owned and operated. Our agency is licensed, insured and bonded, all our caregivers are vetted, trained and background checked. We service most all areas of Orange County CA with a concentration in Laguna Woods and surrounding cities. We work with all Long-Term Care Insurance plans.

Q: What types of services does home care typically cover?

A: We offer a wide range of home care services and customize a care plan for every client. These services include personal care related services such as bathing, dressing,

bathroom assistance and other personal hygiene needs. We prepare meals, provide transportation and help with housekeeping duties. Basically we help with all the activities of normal daily living seniors might need a hand with .

Companionship and social engagement is another key aspect of caregiving. Some of our seniors can feel isolated and lonely, a caregiver can be a friend to talk to. Seniors with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or Dementia can benefit greatly from a caregiver. Caregivers are experienced working with people with cognitive impairments. They are trained on the techniques used to manage behavior, keeping them safe and supervised.

58

Q: Can you share an example of a caregiver and client that worked well?

A: We had the pleasure of working with Paul, a Laguna Woods resident that was the primary caregiver for his brother Jim. Jim had a history of seizures and was dealing with some cognitive impairment. He was often disoriented and was apprehensive outside the house. As a result, Jim stayed mostly shut in, and that was challenging for Paul who needed a break.

After starting home care service, Paul unexpectedly wrote me a letter and said, “When I met with you, you had a particular caregiver in mind whom you thought would be a good match for my brother’s unique needs. To your credit, your recommendation of Chris proved to be an ideal match. Chris was very congenial, creative, and attentive to Jim’s needs in a way that made Jim feel very comfortable and safe. It proved that Jim can form new relationships outside of our family circle and could adapt to situations when outside my presence. This was a big breakthrough and I credit you and Chris for making this possible.”

Chris built a relationship with Jim. They became friends. They found common interests like classic rock and roll and playing pool.

Each case is unique and each client presents a unique opportunity for us to find ways to go above and beyond expectations. It could be preparing a special, home-cooked meal, going on a favorite outing, baking a birthday cake for the special day, playing cards, reminiscing, or simply being there to hold their hand.

Q: What makes Your home care stand out above the other home care agencies?

A: The senior home care industry is growing and changing. The

(Our caregiver) Chris was very congenial, creative, and attentive to Jim’s needs in a way that made Jim feel very comfortable and safe ...

– Client Paul, Laguna Woods resident

trend we are seeing is an increase in rates, add on fees and lengthy minimum hour requirements. At Your Home Care we don’t have lengthy minimum hour requirements, nor do we up-charge.

We make every effort to be as accommodating and flexible as possible to meet the needs of our clients. We are responsive and available to our clients and caregivers whenever they need us. We act quickly to address and resolve any issue or concern.

Going back to our mission, to provide compassionate home care services that enrich families lives, with this in mind we are always looking for ways we can exceed our clients expectations.

Mission Viejo Wigs:

Where Customers are “Family”

Mission Viejo Wigs is truly a family business. Not in the traditional sense, where its owners and operators share the same genes. But rather in such a way that every person who has walked through Owner Betty Darroch’s doors in the 30+ years she has been in operation immediately felt like a member of Darroch’s extended family.

As a professional hair and wig stylist since 1962, Betty began her career at CBS where her résumé reads like a celebrity screenplay starring the coifs of a veritable “who’s who” of Hollywood: Ann Margaret, Carol Lawrence, the Midnight Specials and the Sonny & Cher Show. She went on to work for the Hallelujah Hollywood Show at the MGM Hotel in Las Vegas.

But it wasn’t until she opened her own business in Mission Viejo that she felt as though she were “truly doing God’s work.”

Her clients today include people who are experiencing hair loss due to chemotherapy treatment, alopecia or other medical conditions. Betty specializes in wigs, hairpieces and toupees for women, men and children and carries only the highest quality brands. Each wig or hairpiece is custom fit to the client for the most natural look and feel – no one will know you’re wearing a wig unless you tell them.

received many compliments on her “new do” and no one was the wiser.

It’s been over nine years since my mother completed treatment and is now leading a cancer-free life. Although her own hair has long since grown back, she still often prefers to wear Betty’s wigs on “bad hair days.”

Thank you Betty!

“Hair loss, whether it is the result of illness, the aging process or heredity, can be a traumatic and emotionally draining experience,” says Betty.
