TIPS FOR FILING YOUR 2023

INDIVIDUAL & BUSINESS TAX RETURNS

Based upon recent tax law changes and increasing complexity, I can’t think of a more important time to have your tax returns prepared professionally by a CPA.

It is critical that you remove the guesswork when you prepare your tax returns. Our frm is ready to review your unique situation to determine if any of the following tax planning ideas should be implemented.

INDIVIDUALS

1. Pay careful attention to the Tax Filing Deadlines: Due Date & (Extension Deadlines). S Corporation and Partnership returns are due on March 15 (Extensions Sept. 15). Individual, Trust and C Corporation returns are due on April 15 (Extensions for Individual & C Corps on Oct. 15 and Trusts on Sept. 30).

3. Taxpayers age 70.5 or older can contribute to charities up to $100,000 directly out of their IRA. This reduces AGI and most likely will lower your tax bill. This is a huge tax savings if you are taking the Standard Deduction and no longer claiming charitable deductions.

4. If you had or will have a large capital gain, consider investing in a “Qualifed Opportunity Zone” within 180 days of sale or exchange to defer and partially eliminate the initial capital gain in addition to having the potential of eliminating taxation on appreciation on the new investment property.

5. Anyone who receives employer stock options should seek a CPA for tax preparation. The Form 1099-B you receive may not correctly report your cost basis and many taxpayers mistakenly pay tax twice on the gains.

6. California tax laws have little conformity to the new Federal tax laws. Due to the differences in Federal and California law, it is quite possible that you will take the Standard Deduction on your Federal Return and Itemize for your California Return. More importantly, consider bunching itemized deductions into one year so these deductions will exceed the standard deduction for additional savings.

7. Taxpayers can change the tax treatment on their IRA contributions as late as the extension deadline for determining if their timely contribution will be treated as PreTax (Traditional), After-Tax (Roth IRA or Non-Deductible IRA). This is important

to review prior to fnalizing your returns. Contributions levels have increased, too.

8. IRS and CA both offer one-time late fling or payment penalty taxpayer abatements. You can request this every 4 years with the IRS for individuals, businesses, trusts and estates. CA allows it just one time and it is only for Individuals.

9. IRS withdrawals for Taxpayers under age 59.5 can avoid penalties on a maximum distribution of $22,000 if their home was in a Presidentially Declared Disaster zone in 2023 (most of CA). Income recognition can be spread over three years. Repayments of distributions can be recontributed within three years to avoid taxation.

10. Consider reducing your Medicare Premium Surcharge by keeping your Modifed Adjusted Gross Income under specifc income levels. A $1 difference can translate to an extra $839 in annual premiums.

11. Residential Rental Income for 15 days or less is not taxable income. This is often called the “Augusta Rule.” Review with your CPA to see if it applies to your home.

BUSINESSES

1. CA SDI Rate has been increased to 1.1% with no cap. Contact us if you want to evaluate if establishing an employer Voluntary Plan will create cost savings for the employees and indirectly lower an employer’s costs.

2. New Benefcial Ownership Reporting Requirement for new entities must be made currently within 30 days of creation and by December 31, 2024 for existing entities. This is best handled by your CPA after tax season in October or November.

3. The CAL-Savers program mandated that employers with fve or more employees participate in establishing Roth-IRA accounts for employees unless they established their own pension plan. For employers that started a new pension plan on their own, File Form 8881 to receive a Tax Credit for Pension Plan Startup Costs and Auto Enrollment.

4. Section 199A: Taxpayers may deduct up to 20% of their domestic “Qualifed Business Income (QBI)”. QBI includes income from S corporations, Partnerships, LLCs taxed as S corporations or partnerships, Schedule C businesses, Schedule F farming activities and self-employment income reported as other income. It is extremely important that you classify your business with an accurate Principal Business Code since this will be a determinant if you qualify for QBI deduction at certain income levels.

5. Review to see if a 401k, SEP-IRA or Defned Beneft Plan is the most benefcial plan for saving pre or after tax. Plans and new increased contributions can now be established/paid for Tax Year 2023 as late as the extended due date for your return in 2024.

6. Important to review your Meals and Entertainment expenses in detail. For Federal purposes, Entertainment is no longer deductible (tickets and entertainment events). Business Meals, Travel Meals and Staff Meals for the Benefit of the Employer, are deductible at 50%. For California tax purposes, Entertainment expenses and Meals per above are deductible at 50%. Therefore, be sure to deduct Entertainment expense on your California return.

SPRING INTO WELLNESS: SEASONAL HEALTH TIPS FOR SENIORS

Dr. Mikhail’s tips for managing allergies, nurturing mental health, and incorporating fresh health routines offer seniors a vibrant guide for springtime

Spring brings the promise of a fresh start, and for seniors, it means adopting health-conscious habits like managing spring allergies, maintaining mental health, and adopting healthy routines that can help them make the most out of the season.

Springtime triggers allergies for many with pollen, mold, and dust mite allergens circulating during April. Many of my older patients may not realize that they can develop allergies later in life, and instead of living with these allergies, proactive steps can be taken to improve their well-being by avoiding going outside during peak pollen hours (between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m.), using air purifiers, keeping windows closed, using an over-the-counter nasal spray, or allergy medications.

Many of my patients are affected by seasonal depression from the winter months. As the weather gets warmer and the days get longer, I encourage all seniors to try activities that stimulate their minds like reading a book or taking a class to learn a new skill. Spring is also a great time to connect with family and friends as social connections help combat feelings of isolation and help maintain cognitive abilities.

For seniors to make positive changes this season, try incorporating these tips into their lifestyle:

• Eat fresh: Seniors should enjoy fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables in their diets like beets, strawberries, oranges, and spinach.

• Stay hydrated: Hydration is important as temperatures begin to rise. Seniors should drink about 8 cups (64 ounces) of water per day.

• Engage in physical activities: Walking, gardening, and tai chi not only enhance cardiovascular health but also promote joint flexibility. Seniors should try to be active at least 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week.

• Health check-ups: Schedule any necessary health screenings or vaccinations. This can include an annual physical, vision, and hearing test, or vaccinations for the flu and pneumonia.

• Spring safety: Take precautions to help prevent falls and accidents such as wearing appropriate footwear, removing tripping hazards, and using assistive devices like canes or walkers.

• Sun protection: Long-sleeved, light-material shirts and pants, wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 15 can help protect aging skin from harmful rays.

With these adjustments to lifestyle and routines, seniors can experience the joy of spring to its fullest. To make an appointment with Dr. Mikhail, please call (657) 241-3600.

Cefali & Cefali, APC

Trusted Accident Attorneys for the Most Serious Injuries

It’s a remarkable feeling when you can fnd someone to take your side. In relationships, sports: you name it. That one person who believes in you, makes you better, fghts alongside you.

Michael Cefali matched with his person (his wife Courtney) long before law school - but their partnership extended through the long years studying for the bar and paid off in an even match that has stacked up in their favor many times over. Graduates of Chapman Law and California Western, respectively, they started the San Juan Capistrano-based Cefali & Cefali, APC in uly of 2 9 and have been fighting for the little guy ever since. From setting clients up with top-tier doctors and specialists, to negotiating stellar settlements, Cefali & Cefali, APC handles cases from start to finish with client health as their top priority.

Focusing on all aspects of personal injury, the Cefalis are what you might expect in such a ring: passionate, aggressive, and most importantly, honest - all traits that have contributed to the couple having recovered millions of dollars per year on behalf of their clients since opening their firm.

“The insurance companies would like you to think that they get to determine the value of your injuries, your suffering, says ichael. e ll fight for every last penny because we know that you deserve it.” Clients appreciate the work that the Cefalis do. In fact, as of the date of this publication, you won t find a single negative review of their firm anywhere on the internet.

Client Jamie shares, “I am so grateful for everything that Mike Cefali and his team did for me! Not only was he able to help me get what I was owed in my settlement and then some, but he was so responsive and kind and

it was very apparent that he cared about me and my case! He and his team are so HONEST and FAIR and it was clear from start to finish that he had my best interest in mind! Not only is he a good lawyer but he is a good person which made a world of difference for me. I could not have asked for a better experience with a personal injury attorney! I have already recommended him to all of my friends and I will continue to recommended him to anyone looking for a good lawyer! Thank you so much Cefali and Cefali!”

Another client Carrie echoes Jamie’s sentiment, “My husband and I were rear-ended on the freeway. We felt bad thinking of contacting a lawyer, but after several months of continuous pain and medical treatments, a friend recommended Michael Cefali. From the beginning, he lived up to his core values of integrity, loyalty, and vigorous advocacy. Michael is a dedicated, friendly, and competent attorney who seamlessly represented our interests and ensured the outcome was in our favor. He treated us not like a client, but like family; he

was there any time we needed him. He was empathetic to our situation and worked tirelessly with all parties to represent us. We don’t trust many people, but we trust Michael and his team and would highly recommend him to anyone seeking a professional, effective, and focused attorney.”

ith five staff members to back up the stellar work Michael and Courtney produce, the couple remain incredibly hands on, based on a culture of empathy, integrity and advocacy.

“We craft each case personally, build each one for trial, and remain accessible to clients,” says Michael. “Personal injury attorneys get a bad rap when really we’re the good guys. like to think of our firm as a pirate ship. Nimble, clever, and tenacious in spite of being outspent by the adversary, we pry money from greedy insurance companies and give it to our very deserving clients.”

iving back is the spirit of the firm, and community work creates a direct link between Michael, Courtney, and their circle in San Juan Capistrano. The couple and their team proudly supports a number of local charitable and community organizations including: The Boys and Girls Club of Capistrano Valley (Courtney is on the Board of Directors), The San Juan Capistrano Friends of the Library (Courtney is also a board member), , the acific arine ammal Foundation, and Project Coyote. Michael is a member of the San Juan Capistrano Rotary Club and has been recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow.

The Cefali team’s ethics, constant communication (every client is given Michael’s personal cell phone for easy accessibility), commitment to their clients and involvement in the community keeps everyone growing stronger and healthier together. Remarkable isn’t it, that feeling when someone takes your side?

How Can I Tell If I Have Skin Cancer?

There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.

FLEMING DERMATOLOGY & AESTHETIC CENTER 23141 Moulton Parkway, Suite 110, Laguna Hills | (949) 916-5956
Fleming, MD, Double Board-Certi ed in Dermatology and Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery 20
Kristy

Look especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. f you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.

ACTINIC KERATOSIS

An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.

SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.

BASAL CELL CARCINOMA

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.

MELANOMA

Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.

WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW

1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.

2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life.

3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling

A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?

B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin?

C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?

D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.

E - Evolution: Has it changed?

F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others?

4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

Dispelling Misconceptions:

10 COMMON MYTHS ABOUT KETAMINE-ASSISTED THERAPY IN MENTAL HEALTH

As Medical Doctors that are experts in Ketamine Therapy, it is our responsibility to dispel misinformation and provide accurate, evidencebased information regarding treatments. Ketamine-assisted therapy has gained attention in recent years for its potential to help individuals with treatment-resistant depression and other mental health conditions. However, along with its rise in popularity, there has been a fair share of myths and misconceptions surrounding this treatment approach.

Myth 1: Ketamine is Just a “Party Drug”

One of the most prevalent myths surrounding Ketamine is that it is simply a recreational drug with no legitimate medical use. While it’s true that Ketamine has been misused as a club drug due to its dissociative effects, it is also an FDA-approved anesthetic with well-documented benefts in medical settings. Over the last 2 years, its effcacy, superiority and safety in treating severe depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other mental health disorders has been extensively researched.

Myth 2: Ketamine-Assisted Therapy is the Same as Recreational Ketamine Use

Contrary to popular belief, Ketamineassisted therapy is a structured, supervised treatment administered by medical professionals in controlled settings. This therapy involves careful dosing and monitoring to ensure safety and effectiveness. Recreational use, on the other hand, lacks the guidance of healthcare professionals, pharmaceutical regulations of the medicine, and can be unsafe and unpredictable.

Myth 3: Ketamine is Highly Addictive

While Ketamine does have the potential for misuse and dependence, especially in recreational settings, when used under medical supervision, the risk of addiction is signifcantly lower. The appropriate way to receive the Ketamine is only in a monitored medical setting, never at home, and for a fxed amount of sessions (typically six infusions over 3 weeks). Medical

professionals closely monitor patients undergoing Ketamine-assisted therapy to minimize the risk of misuse and ensure safe treatment outcomes.

Myth 4: Ketamine Causes Psychosis

There is a fear that Ketamine may induce psychotic symptoms. However, under proper medical supervision and screening, the risk of such effects is extremely low. Ketamine-assisted therapy is designed to minimize adverse reactions and maximi e therapeutic benefts.

Myth 5: Ketamine-Assisted Therapy is a Last Resort

While Ketamine-assisted therapy is often considered for individuals with treatmentresistant depression, it is not solely reserved as a last resort. Many patients beneft from this therapy early in their treatment journey, especially if they have not found relief from traditional antidepressants or therapies.

Myth 6: Ketamine is Unsafe

When administered by trained medical professionals in a clinical setting, Ketamine is a safe treatment option for many individuals. The doses used in Ketamineassisted therapy are carefully calculated to minimize side effects while maximizing therapeutic benefts. Patients are monitored throughout the treatment session to ensure their safety.

Myth 7: Ketamine-Assisted Therapy is Only for Depression

While Ketamine has shown remarkable results in treating depression, its benefts extend beyond this one condition. Research suggests that Ketamine-assisted therapy is also effective in treating anxiety disorders, PTSD, OCD, and chronic pain conditions.

Myth 8: Ketamine is the Same as Other Psychedelic Therapies

While Ketamine does have psychedelic properties, it differs from other psyche-

Dr. Justin Yanuck, Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician and Board Certified Pain Medicine Physician and Dr. Tanya Dall, Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician

delic therapies like psilocybin or LSD. Ketamine’s mechanism of action involves blocking certain receptors in the brain, leading to its unique therapeutic effects.

Myth 9: Ketamine is Inefective in the Long Term

While the effects of Ketamine may not last indefnitely, many patients experience long-lasting benefts as the medicine mechanism of action actually works to fx the underlying cause of many mental health disorders.

Myth 10: Ketamine-Assisted Therapy is Only for Severe Cases

While Ketamine is often recommended for individuals with treatment-resistant depression, it is not limited to severe cases. Many patients beneft from this therapy early in their treatment journey, especially if other treatments have not provided relief.

In conclusion, Ketamine-assisted therapy holds promising potential for individuals struggling with various mental health conditions. However, it is crucial to separate fact from fction and rely on accurate, evidence-based information when considering this treatment option. It is essential for individuals considering Ketamine-assisted therapy to consult with a ualifed healthcare professional to determine if it is the right choice for their needs. With proper guidance and supervision, Ketamine can be a valuable tool in the treatment of mental health disorders, offering hope and relief to those who need it most.

Why Repipe when you can ?

Lead-Free, Leak-Free Pipe Protection

It is safe to say that I know nothing about pipes. I know a little about drywall, and some about framing; my husband has his general contractor’s license so I’ve picked up a few nuggets of knowledge over the years - albeit in conversation, not in practice.

Pipes, however, are a complete mystery. I have family who live on the East Coast, where pipes seem to burst with some degree of frequency in the winter, but that is the extent of my experience via six degrees of separation. Since our family moved into our “new” home in San Juan Capistrano a few years ago, we have since become something of an expert on experts: those who do and don’t know anything about pipes. There are a bunch of things I can now catch you up on: leaks, sprinkler lines, lead testing. But truly, all you need to know is this: In many cases, ePIPE can have your pipes restored the same day without displacing you from your home.

Topping my list of folks I’d call expert, ePIPE has been in business since 1999. With over 40 international and US-based patents, the company has contracts with the US Department of Defense, several counties across the States, schools, HOA’s, and thousands of individual homeowners nationwide.

Jason Houck, National Sales Director notes “twenty years ago this process was developed to be more convenient, less destructive, longer lasting, and healthier. Now it’s a patented, proven process used around the globe.” Traditional systems wreak havoc on a home, tearing up floors, walls, and ceilings. To get to the pipe, you have to get everything else out of the way: and then to replace the pipe, you have to remove what is there. “Instead of re-piping, we restore pipes in place. Many homes can be completed in a day, with the water going back on in a number of hours.”

ool piping, fire sprinkler systems, water lines - ePIPE deals with it all. They’ll even test for lead and remediate as a LeadSmart® Service provider. Any number of factors can lead to corrosion in a system, often in as little as two years after installation. Any number of factors can lead to pinhole or slab leaks. So what happens next? If your pipes were simply failing due to changing water chemistry, perhaps you’re wondering if there is a better pipe? Turns out the restoration of your pressurized system can be as simple as drying, cleaning and applying ePIPE's patented epoxy coating. “The cleaning process prepares the internal pipe surface for proper bonding,” says Jason. “A bit like sanding before you paint.”

In researching what ePIPE has to offer in terms of the process, I don’t see the word drilling, or destruction, or demolition anywhere. Taking care of

a problem once it begins is one thing, but ensuring that you won’t have that problem for years down the road is entirely different.

Restored piping protects against corroding and pitting, in turn reducing copper and lead leaching.

“Because there is no need to destroy walls, ceilings, or floors, you save a significant amount of money in reconstruction costs,” says Jason. “I’ll keep saying it: we do the work without the mess and expense.” Ranked in the top 1% of over 300,000 California contractors, ePIPE is here to ensure your pipes deliver the way they were made to. That’s really all I need to know.

The Pr f is in the Paint with ONE WAY PAINTING

Ralph Waldo Emerson famously said “who you are speaks so loudly I cannot hear what you’re saying.” Keeping this quote in mind has served me well over the years, particularly in choosing friends … and when seeking out the services of professionals. In my opinion, integrity isn’t a word heard often enough in the business world. Competitive, certainly.

But unfortunately phrases like “bottom-line oriented,” “unscrupulous,” even “cutthroat” have cropped up in the vernacular when hearing home improvement gone wrong stories from fellow homeowners. That’s why it was so refreshing to come across Jeff McCabe and his Orange County-based One Way Painting.

In business since 1976, Jeff and his team serve all of the OC and specialize in interior and exterior residential and commercial painting. They swear by the rules of professionalism: “no cutting corners. No cheap materials. We pay attention to every detail, and never call a job complete until the customer is completely satisfied.

Some might call it good Christian values. Others might say it’s simply good

business. But for the last 42 years, working from the heart has earned One Way Painting such a respected reputation in the industry that the vast majority of their work comes through repeat customers or referrals from repeat customers. The company’s success isn’t merely rooted in customer service though. Boasting a superior knowledge of available product on the market and hiring the most profes sional crews in the business also goes a long way.

“Our reputation speaks for itself; but if it didn’t, we have satisfied employees on our permanent payroll who would put a hand up in

defense of the standards we set,” says Jeff. Standards which were born and bred through a commitment to ethical business practices and hard work. In 2001, Jeff teamed up with seasoned professional Ron Bartz as a journeyman, then took over the company when Ron retired, and has been growing it ever since.

In 2009, Jeff took the pair of threeman crews and expanded the operation to encompass six crews, two office staff, and a project manager who oversees jobs, right alongside the man with the plan himself. “We currently have four trucks on the road and I’d like a full fleet someday. d like to leave a legacy for my daughters, and that means more than just cans of paint and a warehouse full of equipment and materials.”

To Jeff, it means taking care of his employees, taking care of his family: taking care of business.

The hope is that One Way Painting becomes a household name, for its quality of work and quality of values.

28

My husband and I can happily attest to both. When we moved into our home in an uan apistrano five years ago, we acquired quotes for exterior painting from several contractors, but were particularly impressed with Jeff and his crew. Prior to starting work at our home, Jeff came by in person to go over what the job would entail and answered all of our questions. His team showed up right on time the first day and each subsequent day - and at the end of each day everything was cleaned up before they left.

Then the patching: with stucco, trenching around the foundations and priming with an acrylic. They’ll treat your wood siding, eaves, fascia,

“We pride ourselves on working with a team of long-term employees - we do not hire off the street,” says Jeff. “We guarantee our work and do not require payment till the job is completed and the customer is completely pleased with our work.”

Jeff and his crew delivered on these promises and more than exceeded our expectations - the result was outstanding work, a job completed on time and on budget and defined by unparalleled customer service (Kelly in his office was hyper responsive to our inquiries during the estimating

If you have natural wood cabinets and they need refinishing, One Way’s crew will see to it that they look new again. Also licensed and bonded as commercial painters, Jeff’s crew has been making businesses and their buildings look new again for 42 years. With a free on-site estimate, your custom needs are sure to have a custom solution. No deposits required, and “no surprises along the way,” Jeff is quick to add.

“I think at the end of the day what sets us apart is taking our time with each and every customer that comes our way,” says Jeff. “We run a business like every person we interact with is family.” They may not be the cheapest out there, but then that wouldn t fly in merson s eyes, and not in Jeff’s either. “Our business is based on the Christian ethic of treating every customer with honesty and integrity. Every job is done ‘as unto the Lord.’ Does this mean we’re perfect? No. It does mean that we strive to do the best painting job possible.”

Steve Tyrell

Grammy Award-winning producer and vocalist Steve Tyrell “brings a touch of Texas grit to the Great American Songbook,” this according to the San Francisco Chronicle. That makes sense since Tyrell hails from the Lone Star State. He was just 19 when he left Houston and headed to New York to begin his career in the music business. Since then he has achieved great success as a singer, producer, musical supervisor, and radio host.

Judy Collins

Judy Collins has inspired audiences with sublime vocals, boldly vulnerable songwriting, personal life triumphs, and a firm commitment to social activism. In the 1960s, she evoked both the idealism and steely determination of a generation united against social and environmental injustices. Five decades later, her luminescent presence shines brightly as new generations bask in the glow of her iconic 55-album body of work, and heed inspiration from her spiritual discipline to thrive in the music industry for half a century.

Puesto Los Olivos Irvine

Award-winning Mexican Artisan Kitchen + Bar

My husband and I live for a good party. We love hubbub. Give us a guest list and free reign to plan a night out, and we’ll strive to toss together the exact mix of elements to create a memorable experience for all. Like a craft cocktail, it takes a speci c blend of atmosphere, energy and calories to mix a group up the right way and leave without a hangover.

So when we found our way to Puesto Los Olivos Irvine, we knew we had stumbled upon the ideal dining destination for future soirees of all sorts - family gatherings, fun date nightsand the perfect place for an elevated evening on the town with a few of our

Among our recent faves? Crispy Tamarindo Mexican shrimp with classic guacamole, Shortrib Quesabirria which combines crispy melted cheese, braised short rib, Jalisco salsa and pickled radish and the marinated ribeye with avocado, asada pico, tomatillo arbol salsa and queso fresco. Order a side of herb lime rice and traditional black beans for an especially avorful (and lling) meal, particu-

favorite foodie friends. As a group, we are particularly partial to Mexican fare - so much so that one friend claims it would top the list if he were ever stranded on a deserted island with only a single choice of cuisine. Luckily if the menu were provided by Puesto, he’d happily live out his days noshing on an array of award-winning artisan tacos.

Puesto’s Mexico City-style tacos and other dishes are de ned by all-natural proteins, super tasty housemade, organic blue corn tortillas, salsas and other authentic and gourmet condiments and toppings. The chefs change the menu often based on seasonal ingredients and culinary inspiration.

larly when paired with the Puesto Perfect, the eatery’s signature margarita crafted from Pueblo Viejo reposada tequila, fresh lime and organic agave nectar. Another popular pick is Puesto’s spin on the Old Fashioned made with Buffalo Trace bourbon, bitters, sugar and nothing else.

Drawing inspiration from monumental Mesoamerican architecture while also paying homage to today’s Mexico City, famed San Diego artist Paul Basile designed a space that transports diners to a modern Mexican jungle where light pours through a golden skylight onto lush greenery and thousands of hand-poured concrete tiles that surround the dining space. The black and gold quartzite bar connects the dining room to an expansive patio enhanced by a grove of olive trees. PUESTO

He earned his stripes on Broadway… now the ghost-withthe-most is coming to Orange County.

It’s showtime! Based on Tim Burton’s dearly beloved lm, this hilarious musical tells the story of Lydia Deetz, a strange and unusual teenager whose whole life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and a demon with a thing for stripes.

With an irreverent book, an astonishing set, and a score that’s out of this Netherworld, BEETLEJUICE is “SCREAMINGLY GOOD FUN!” (Variety). And under its uproarious surface (six feet under, to be exact), it’s a remarkably touching show about family, love, and making the most of every Day-O!

Quintessential Coastal Retreat

This year marks a pair of milestones in our family. Our son turned 17 and our daughter celebrated her Sweet 16 last month. In addition to arranging teen parties with their friends, I planned a family weekend at what has become one of our favorite staycation destinations over the years: Bahia Resort Hotel in San Diego.

You’d think a trip to Mission Bay would consist of getting outside the proverbial four walls of the hotel to

experience miles of sandy beaches and area attraction - but not for us this time around. We already knew how much the property itself has to offer so we opted to stay ensconced as close

to the resort as possible. The. Entire. Time. With fantastically appointed beach-access guest rooms and covered lounge chairs at the water’s edge, beach games, a pair of lighted tennis courts, kayak, stand-up paddleboard and powerboat rentals, on-property dining, a sparkling junior Olympic size pool and even a Residents’ Lounge for billiards, table shuf eboard and foosball, there’s no reason to leave.

There’s a fully outftted ftness center for my son and yoga and pilates classes on the pool deck for my daughter and I to indulge in a little wellness. Whatever your plan is, for our part this trip there was nothing more relaxing than knowing each of

our itinerary options were all within a few minutes walk.

Tucked away on a private fourteen-acre peninsula on the west shore of Mission Bay, the Bahia Resort Hotel’s newly renovated rooms and suites showcase accommodations to suit your needs, whether it be a romantic overnight, a girlfriends’ getaway or a family-friendly retreat. We booked the Deluxe Bayfront Suite for a little more space to spread out with a separate bedroom and living area. The full kitchen with stove, oven and compact refrigerator allowed me to bake up sweet birthday treats and microwave popcorn to our hearts content for a late night in-room movie.

Dockside 1953 patio

Bayfront Deluxe Suite

This particular suite was pretty spectacularly situated adjacent to Bahia’s secluded beach on the west side of the peninsula. The two lounge chairs on our own private patio overlooking the water made for a particularly enjoyable morning coffee.

Tuna tostada or Chef’s crudo. Can’t choose? The Seafood Tower offers an impressive sampling of oysters on the half shell, shrimp, ceviche and seared tuna. I’m personally a fan of making a meal of several appetizers and the menu here provided a delicious opportunity to share an array of delicious dishes - from the melt-inyour-mouth seared Day Boat Scallops and roasted Indian iron mushrooms to the pasture fed Wagyu and Lamb Meatball with whipped Valibreso and Calabrian Chili tomato sauce.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

Located right on property, Action Sport Rentals ( actionsportrentals.com )

Guests can rent a Hurricane or Rinker - both fast, fun craft that’s also a super comfortable ride for up to 10 passengers. While boaters stay within the bay, our experience alternated between a leisurely cruise in the channels and a wind-through-your hair ride at speeds topping 40 mph.

Upon arrival at Bahia, visitors really do feel worlds away from the hustle and bustle of the everyday. The locale is literally a symphony of colors and scents as springtime owers are in full bloom and the salty breeze blows in from the bay. Tropical gardens with winding paths and trickling streams lined with tropical palms, duck ponds and even a rescue seal enclosure. The Bahia Resort Hotel is more than just a destination, it’s a destination to remember.

Speaking of which, the kids thought the Grab N’ Go offerings (think breakfast burritos, pastries and fresh brewed coffee and espresso drinks) was “super cool” served out of a gleaming Airstream trailer on site.

With regard to destination dining on property, Bahia’s upscale restaurant, Dockside 1953 is certain to make waves (pun intended) on the city’s coastal dining scene with its picturesque waterfront setting, nautical-inspired design and eclectic menu of mouthwatering dishes by Executive Chef Bryan Stuppy.

Chef’s culinary offerings feature “a strong focus on sustainable seafood from local fshmongers and the highest quality produce from local growers and producers. Seafood afcionados like me will have their work cut out for them in deciding between the literal bounty of “raw” standouts like locally caught Roc fsh ceviche, Ahi

endeavors to meet the needs of all aquatic enthusiasts. Rent a single or tandem kayak, stand up paddleboard, peddle boats or pontoon boats. We have rented from Action many times over the years so familiar with its offerings, the kids requested a special “birthday spin around the bay” aboard a powerboat.

Exploring the Charm of The Pali Wine Co. Outpost in Anaheim

Nestled amidst Anaheim’s bustling streets and vibrant atmosphere lies a hidden gem for wine enthusiasts. The Pali Wine Co. Outpost’s warm and inviting ambiance sets the tone for an memorable wine-tasting journey for date night, evening out with friends or celebrations of all sorts.

The rustic yet elegant décor, coupled with a welcoming staff, creates an atmosphere that is both relaxed and refned, inviting guests to unwind and savor the moment.

Its impressive selection of wines is sourced from some of the fnest vineyards across California’s Central Coast and beyond. From crisp Chardonnays to bold Pinot Noirs, each bottle tells a story of craftsmanship and dedication to quality. Whether you’re a seasoned oenophile or just beginning to explore the world of wine, the knowledgeable staff are on hand to guide you through a curated tasting experience tailored to your preferences.

Such was the case on a recent visit to celebrate a girlfriend’s milestone 50th birthday. My friend and I both opted for the signature Pali Wine Co. Flight to indulge in tastings of Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays inspired by Burgundian wines while the men leaned into the Tower inery Flight defned by bold, small-lot wines from family-owned Central Coast vineyards.

Our selections were perfectly paired with a variety of shareable dishes including the Solid Oak Sampler, a family-style board that arrived with a trio of meats, cheeses and “all the things” that make a charcuterie fun. The fresh baked bread with homemade wine butter was fragrantly avorful, as was the warm artichoke dip enhanced with goat cheese, arugula, onions and market veggies.

For something a bit heartier, the mushroom atbread was delishtopped with carmelized mushrooms, roasted mushrooms, fgs, drun en goat cheese, arugula and olive oil.

For a decidely different sweet treat, try the warm poached pear (accompanied by vanilla bean gelato, cinnamon crunchies and warm wine caramel) or the Strawberries “N Cream with cacao nib crumble, strawberry jam, mint and whipped cheesecake.

Whether you’re a local looking for an evening escape or a visitor seeking a taste of California’s wine country, The Pali Wine Co. Outpost is sure to leave a lasting impression.

Ask a SOMM

A good sommelier is a helper, a guide to nding the best wine for your food and experience. For this month’s installment, we again approached South County-based sommelier Micah Sampson for a bit of education about the wine/food pairings, whether the size and shape of the glass makes a difference and whether wine should be decanted before its served.

Q Does white really go with fsh/seafood and red with red meat or is there some overlap?

A When in doubt the white with seafood and red with red meat is a good rule. ut of course, there s definitely some overlap here when getting into the details. There are some fantastic lighter bodied red wines out there that can easily be paired with fish and other seafoods. ome of my favorites are Pinot Noir, Beaujolais, and Grenache, each of them have a light body with very light tannins, won t overpower the delicate fish. And for red meats you can easily pour a full bodied white wine that has high acidity, think California Chardonnays, white Rhone blends, Rieslings and Chenin Blancs. All of these have nice body that can stand up to high fat red meats, and nice acidity that can shine through some of the more robust seasonings and marinades that are used to cook them.

Q Does the shape/size of the wine glass make a difference?

A This is one of those topics that I wish people took more seriously! In short, yes, the shape and size of the glass makes a huge difference! Wine glasses are designed with very specific shapes and si es to help deliver wine aromas to your nose. If search “red wine glass” and “white wine glass” you’ll notice red wine glasses are much bigger and more bowl shaped, that’s because there are vapors coming off the wine as the alcohol slowly evaporates, those vapors are filled with compounds that help you taste the wine. White wines a typically chilled and won’t give off as much aromas, therefore the glass doesn’t need to be as large. Another reason for the smaller shape for whites is they don’t need need to aerate like reds do, less surface area reduces aeration and keeps the wine cooler. Reds on the other hand love to aerate and

therefore need all the surface area to slowly oxidize (in a good way). The bowl-shaped narrower opening at the top of the glass does two things that are both very important: 1) It helps trap the aromas into a smaller area to help you small them. Think about how much more difficult it would be to smell wine in a cereal bowl with an 8 inch opening than a wine glass with a 2 inch opening. 2) It helps keep the wine in the glass when you swirl the heck out of it, which you should do! I love swirling wine, it introduces oxygen (good oxidation) into the wine and gets all those great aromas swirling around the glass for you to smell!

Q Should I decant wine before I drink it?

A Decanting can do wonders for your wine, but it isn’t always necessary. You should have a nice decanter at home if you’re serious about enjoying some great red wines (don’t worry about decanting white wines), and that decanter should have a nice wide bottom that creates a ton of surface area when the wine is poured in, and a narrow top that keeps too much air from getting introduced and makes it easy to pour a glass. The types of red wines you’re decanting are usually full bodied reds that usually have a some age on them (like 5-10+ years), not those cheap red blends you’re buying for $8.99 at the market. The idea behind decanting is you’re introducing oxygen into the wine and a chemical change is happening, a lot of those volatile compounds (bad aromas) are evaporating off and the harsher tannins are softening up a bit, which allows you to enjoy the wine more. o, if you have a 2010 Barolo or a 2015 Napa Cabernet, let those bad boys decant for 30-60 minutes, maybe take some small sips and smells during that time so you can see how the wine changes.

Join Us in Changing the Future of Our Community – One Student at a Time!

As a young teen, I grew up in an extremely toxic and dysfunctional home with little to no parental or family support. To escape that unhealthy environment, I left home when I was and fnished high school on my own by working full-time and attending night classes.

After graduation, I attended the local community college while working full-time in operational positions. My education, combined with working in the real world, changed my life and gave me a chance to grow into the adult I wanted to become: a successful businesswoman, wife and mother who is happily involved in her community.

Years ago as a parent of school-aged children, I became involved in PTSA where it became clear there was an issue with homeless high school students living within our Huntington Beach community in unsupportive and unhealthy environments. This stirred my empathy for our local atrisk teens and ignited my passion for helping them.

Robyne’s Nest was created, out of love and empathy, to help and guide

these at-risk and homeless high school students (who are alcohol and drug-free) in that critical window of time between youth and adulthood. We created a program that I would have loved to have had when I was a teen. Our Standard (Student Care) Program Support Services include housing, mental health therapy, life skills education, career mentoring and personal coaching with our trained volunteers. We provide clothing and food assistance, educational support, transportation and legal support. Combined with our one-onone wrap around services, we try to give our students all that is necessary to help them become independent, self sufficient, and aware young adults. We drive students to doctor’s appointments, help them apply for Medi-Cal, teach them how to drive, help them apply for birth certificates

"My expertise comes from personal experience. Every step is a success. Each day new habits overtake old habits is a success.” - Robyne Wood

and Social Security Cards, advocate for them at school, help them fill out FAFSA forms for colleges, help them shop for prom dresses and suits, teach them how to do their taxes, nurse them back to health when they’ve suffered some kind of medical situation…and the list goes on.

igh school graduation is our first goal because it gives our students a better chance to break those cycles of homelessness, abuse, addiction and more. A high school diploma is fundamental to long-term life opportunities, stability and self sufficiency.

We are proud to say that during the 2021-2022 school year, we provided (21,989) meals to the Robyne’s Nest students and “food insecure” high school students in HBUHSD, (873) hours of mental health therapy and (2,136) nights of safe housing to the students enrolled in our program.

Since 2015, the inception of our program, 159 Robyne’s Nest Students have graduated from high school.

Director and Founder Robyne Wood

Through individualized attention to each student, we have purposefully kept our focus on local high schools to ensure that we can give each student the quality care they deserve. We meet our students at school generally during lunch or after school, so as not to interrupt their classes. We seek to understand and treat the underlying issues that drive low self-esteem, lack of emotional intelligence, moodiness and other mental health factors that lead to homelessness and dropping out of school.

At Robyne’s Nest, we are very much in the business of helping our students create a new foundation to build the life they want to have.

How to Choose the Best STEM/STEAM Summer Program For Middle School Students

”STEM education is very important to mankind just like the water we drink and the air we breathe in, we need it to produce more critical thinkers, problem-solvers, innovators, and the world best economy drivers.” – Bamigboye Olurotimi, Writer, Poet, Technologist

Middle School is an important period for students to learn and discover their interests especially as they begin to learn more about subjects and think about their futures. And because they receive exposure to a variety of different subjects, it can introduce students to a subject they love and can grow their passion for. Developing a strong understanding of what they like and are good at can help students chart a path for their future especially as they prepare to enter High School.

Incorporated STEM/STEAM in Middle School programs can introduce students to essential soft skills like problem-solving and critical thinking. STEM/STEAM in Middle School curriculums provides an excellent opportunity to teach students about a new area of study. It can set them up for success with the soft skills they will need in the workplace as adults.

When you have a Middle School student, the summer months can be instrumental in preventing summer

brain drain and continuing your student’s education. However, keeping their minds engaged can be fun, too. STEM/STEAM summer programs for Middle School students are the perfect mixture of fun and educational engagement. Since choosing from the myriad of options is often a daunting task, follow these three tips to fnd the ideal program for your middle schooler, whether they’re a writer extraordinaire or budding scientist.

1. LOOK FOR A PROGRAM THAT SPARKS PASSION

Whether your middle schooler loves completing engineering homework every night or is constantly reading, fnding a summer camp that focuses on their passion will make for a fun summer. Academic STEM/STEAM summer camps are far from the summer school of your youth. Instead of worksheets and textbooks, your child will get to complete hands-on experiments and explore traditional subjects like science, language arts, and math through a new lens.

Your coder will love exploring the world of artifcial intelligence and machines where they will learn how to teach computers to play games and fnd patterns using advanced algorithms and programming. If your child prefers the classic written word, let them hone their reading, writing, and grammar skills in a creative writing class!

2. CHOOSE A CAMP THAT SETS YOUR CHILD UP FOR SUCCESS

Summer can be the perfect time to set your child up for success in Middle School, especially if they struggled with certain subjects during the school year. Summer camp can help them catch up on material in a low-pressure setting. Regardless of what your child needs a little extra help with, summer at Stratford is the ideal way to gain that extra edge as they go into sixth, seventh, or eighth grade.

58

Alternatively, if your child is gearing up to take the High School Placement Test (HSPT) next year, our HSPT prep course will provide them with the tools they need to excel on the test and get into their High School of choice. Using individualized instruction, summer HSPT prep courses at Stratford are a great resource for your child.

3. FIND A CAMP THAT TEACHES YOUR CHILD TO SOLVE REAL-WORLD PROBLEMS

It is never too early for your middle schooler to start thinking about and tackling problems that people are facing outside of school. Summer camps at Stratford are the perfect opportunity for your child to learn science concepts through creative, real-world situations.

Summer should be a fun and relaxing time for middle schoolers, but that doesn’t mean you can’t keep their brains engaged and learning over the break. Set your child up for success in the coming year by enrolling them in a STEM/STEAM summer program for Middle School students and allowing their inner writer, scientist, or mathematician to ourish

What’s Not Covered by Medicare Part A & B

Original Medicare doesn’t cover everything. Some of the items and services Original Medicare doesn’t cover include long term care; most dental care/dentures; routine eye exams and eyeglasses/contacts; routine acupuncture; routine chiropractice; routine hearing tests and hearing aids.

The good news is that there are now options for Medicare supplements (which pay second after Medicare pays frst and allow you to go to any doctor that accepts Medicare without a referral) that do! There are Medicare supplements that have additional benefts to cover routine vision exams and give you an eyewear allowance as well as a routine hearing test beneft and set low copays on hearing aids and the ftting exams as well as routine acupuncture and chiropractic.

Some other additional benefts include free ftness memberships to gyms such as LA Fitness, 24 Hour Fitness, the YMCA and more, and a quarterly amount of money to spend on over the counter medications, vitamins, oral and eye care products, etc.

If you’re already on Medicare with a Medicare supplement you can change to this type of plan using the birthday rule which guarantees your acceptance as long as you apply during the month of your birthday and the month preceding and following typically. My experience has been that the premiums for these plans are competitive to what someone is currently paying for their Medicare supplement that doesn’t have all of these “bells and whistles”.

Along with this good news for Medicare supplements, there is also the good news that while you do live in a very expensive area and pay a lot for many necessities for this reason, you don’t need to pay a premium for a Medicare supplement and a Medicare RX plan because there are Medicare Advantage plans in Orange County that have zero to very low monthly premiums and they also include your Medicare RX coverage.

Here’s the bad news; Original Medicare doesn’t cover everything. Some of the items and services Original Medicare doesn’t cover include:

 Long term care (also referred to as custodial care)

 Most dental care

 Routine Eye exams (the exam you receive related to prescribing glasses or contacts) and eyeglasses/contacts.

 Dentures

 Acupuncture (Medicare doesn’t cover acupuncture (including dry needling) for any condition other than chronic low back pain. It will cover no more than 20 visits a year)

 Routine Hearing tests, hearing aids and exams for fitting them.

So, you’re on your own paying for these services if you just have Original Medicare.

The good news is that there are now options for Medicare supplements (which pay second after Medicare pays first and allow you to go to any doctor that accepts Medicare without a referral) that do!

There are Medicare supplements that have additional benefits to cover routine vision exams and give you an eyewear allowance as well as a routine hearing test benefit and set low copays on hearing aids and the fitting exams.

ome other additional benefits include acupuncture, free fitness mem-

What’s Not Covered by Part A & B

berships to gyms such as LA Fitness, 24 Hour Fitness, the YMCA and more. There are also plans that have a quarterly credit to spend on over the counter medications, vitamins, oral and eye care products, etc.

If you’re already on Medicare with a Medicare supplement you can change to this type of plan using the birthday rule which guarantees your acceptance as long as you apply during the month of your birthday preceding and following your birthday month. My experience has been that the premiums for these plans are competitive to what someone is currently paying for their Medicare supplement that doesn’t have all of these “bells and whistles”.

Along with this good news for Medicare supplements, there is also the good news that while you do live in a very expensive area and pay a lot for many necessities for this reason, you don’t need to pay a premium for a Medicare supplement and a Medicare drug plan because there are Medicare Advantage plans in Orange County that have zero to very low monthly premiums and they also include your Medicare RX coverage. (These plans are also referred to as Part C and you

must still pay your Medicare Part B premium)

These plans are offered by private insurance companies that have contracts with Medicare to provide you with your Medicare Part A & B benefits, and while doing so they go over and above what Original Medicare will pay. They have no deductible, very few medical copays, low out of pocket maximums (majority are $899 or less in 2023). Many people I meet with are also surprised at the number of additional benefits these plans offer. All of the previously mentioned additional benefits and much more including dental coverage. find the majority of OC physicians are in participation with these HMO plans, the key is to making sure all of your physicians are in the same network that participates with the HMO plan. That’s an important part of my job when helping new clients. Sometimes giving up a physician that you rarely see (or didn’t care much for anyway) is necessary for a Medicare Advantage HMO plan to work for you. Either way, I feel the good news in 2023 is that there are great options for all new Medicare beneficiaries, and m happy to help explain them to you.
