IS AMERICA PREPARED TO RETIRE? A look at some ways to get ready. Provided by Ken Earwood

A

re Americans saving enough? Only 19% of U.S. adults describe themselves as “very confident” when asked about their savings. Worry spots include retiring without enough money saved (16%) and anxiety about having a “rainy day” emergency fund (14%). These findings come from the 2018 Consumer Financial Literacy Survey conducted by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling. (The survey collected data from 2,017 U.S. adults.)1

Only 41% of us keep a regular budget. If you are one of those roughly two-out-of-five Americans, you’re on the right track. While this percentage is on par with findings going back to 2007, the study also finds that while 65% of Americans are saving part of their annual income towards retirement, 29% indicate they are “not at all confident” that their savings will be enough to sustain them.1 Relatively few seek the help of a financial professional. When asked “Considering what I already know about personal finance, I could still benefit from some advice and answers to everyday financial questions from a professional,” 79% of respondents agreed with the statement. Yet only 13% indicated that they would seek out the help of some sort of financial professional if they had “financial problems related to debt.” While it isn’t surprising to think that 24% of respondents would turn to friends and family, it may be alarming to learn that 18% would choose to turn to no one at all.1 Why don’t more people seek help? After all, Americans of all incomes and savings levels certainly are free 6

to set financial goals. They may feel embarrassed about speaking to a stranger about personal financial issues. It may also be the case that they feel like they don’t make enough money to speak to a professional, or perhaps, a financial professional is something that millionaires and billionaires have, not the average American worker. Another possibility is that they feel like they have a good handle on their financial future; they have a budget and stick to it, and they contribute to an IRA, 401(k), or have some other investments. But that 79% admission, mentioned above, indicates that a vast majority of Americans are not as confident.1 Defined goals lead to definite strategies. If you set financial objectives, you vault ahead of most Americans – at least according to these findings. A written financial strategy does not imply or guarantee wealth, of course, nor does it ensure that you will reach your goals. Yet that financial strategy does give you an understanding of the distance between your current financial situation (where you are) and where you want to be. How much have you strategized? Retiring without a financial strategy is an enormous risk; retiring with a strategy that hasn’t been reviewed in several years is also chancy. A relationship with a financial professional can help to bring you up to date about what you need to do and provide you with more clarity and confidence when it comes to the financial future.

Surf City’s farm-to-table fast casual cuisine By Jody Robinson There are so many restaurants in the world. Deciding what to eat, like so many other things these days, can be an overwhelming choice to make - especially for mothers or other caretakers like me who are always on the hunt for something easy - and healthy - on the go. Let me clarify- something that doesn’t read Easy = Chicken Nuggets. In the few weeks since Sweetgreen opened its newest location in the 5 Points Plaza, I am already a fan. The company has 224 stores nationwide, but Hun-

tington Beach is only the second to boast the fast-casual chain’s “Infinite Kitchen” automated technology which assembles salads and bowls that are then finished by hand at the counter. Human employees prepare the food, marinate the meats, chop the veggies, make the dressings and put on the finishing touches. A machine dubbed the “infinite kitchen” takes on the back-of-the-house duties and does the rest (the bulk of the salad and bowl preparation). This translates to a seamless experience from placing your order on one of six tablets stationed in the middle of the store (or via the app) to order pickup (typically less than five minutes). Sweetgreen’s mission revolves around real food - sourced locally (and seasonally!) through a transparent supply chain, and cooked from scratch. The founders - three college friends - saw the same choice for themselves through their schooling years. “You could get food that was slow, expensive, and fresh - or fast, cheap, and unhealthy.”

west chicken fajita. My new fave? The Chicken Pesto Parm which arrives as a generous plate of baby spinach, herbed quinoa, spicy broccoli, tomatoes, roast chicken, shaved parmesan, pesto vinaigrette and sweetgreen’s signature hot sauce. This is the perfect place for me to meet a mom friend who is about to have her second child. Throughout both her pregnancies, she’s experienced dietary intolerances, first dairy and soy, then gluten. Because dishes here can be customized to suit your individual needs and culinary cravings, she is able to create a different inspired dish each visit. Since opening their first location in Washington DC, the company has expanded out to the opposite coast and are opening locations all over Southern California. Lucky me. One less decision to make throughout the day. SWEETGREEN 18685 Main Street Huntington Beach Sweetgreen.com

Longevity, Partnership and Commitment Love and Marriage journeys from three couples at The Covington.

F

or three couples at The Covington, a premier nonprofit retirement community in Aliso Viejo, perspectives on successful marriage come from first-hand experience. We thought February a good time to speak to them about love and fulfillment in South County, and we were not disappointed with the result. Their journeys through longevity, partnership and commitment have been as distinct and inspiring as the couples themselves.

Vi And Peter Janssen Vi and Peter Janssen have been married since 1965. They met in college at a music class. “We were college sweethearts,” Vi says. After graduate school, Peter went into the army, and they spent a few years in Germany where their first daughter was born. After completing his service, they returned to Southern California. With more than 58 years of experience, one of the secrets to their long, happy marriage is expectation. “We knew marriage was a commitment,” Peter says. When they said “I do” they fully expected to be married for a lifetime. Becoming parents made this focus even stronger. They took a pre-marriage counselling program – yes, they had those in those days too! The Janssens highly recom-

mend it, as it gave them a safe space to share some aspects of themselves and their expectations before they were married. As they look back on their lifetime together, their advice to couples is to learn about each other’s interests and support one another in them. Vi referenced the poem On Marriage by Kahlil Gibran “… stand together yet not too near together: For the pillars of the temple stand apart… let there be spaces in your togetherness/And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.” They believe giving each other a blend of space and support has been one of their secrets to a long, happy marriage. “Being good friends helps when things get tough. And you’ll go through some tough stuff,” Peter says. “We learned to take it one year at a time; but talk continually. Talk about things and don’t hold it in,” he emphasizes. They both acknowledge that over the years, sharing gets easier. “We respect each other and cherish each other. And a good dose of humor helps!”

Vi and Peter Janssen Wedding 1965 12

Vi and Peter chose The Covington for several reasons. They had been living in San Clemente for 35 years and wanted to stay in the area. After visiting several communities, they chose The Covington because, in Peter’s words, “it was the warmest.” They valued the amenities available and the nonprofit status of the organization, as funds are reinvested in the community, not paid out to shareholders.

When describing their move from their long-term house to their new home at The Covington, Vi says, “it was a smooth transition.” And while they still spend time with their friends from San Clemente, they are developing a whole new group of friends at The Covington. “The people are so welcoming,” she says.

Marilyn and Dale Hoffman Dale came to Los Angeles from Kansas City, via Iowa in 1958. Marilyn was born in Los Angeles. They met in July 1959 at North American Aviation where Dale was working full time, and Marilyn had a summer job before starting her senior year at USC. It didn’t take long for them to understand there was something special between them. They were married in February 1961. Marilyn and Dale both came from strong family backgrounds, which instilled in them a commitment to a strong family of their own. This perspective helped when raising their four children. Drawing on their 63 years of marriage, Dale’s first thought is the mutual respect they hold for each other, and he says

they built that through shared ideals and understanding. “You need to identify your common values,” Dale says. “And be flexible with your expectations.” Like Vi and Peter Janssen, Marilyn and Dale took a premarriage counselling course. “It led to a lot of discussion, which was good,” she says.” Marilyn adds, “take time to get acquainted.” While they were married after just 18 months, they spent a lot of time talking through important topics before walking down the aisle. And once a couple is married, Marilyn emphasizes “work at it. Don’t just throw it away.” Both Marilyn and Dale suggest couples focus on their common interests, rather than their differences. “Find common ground. Talk about things,” Dale says. “As you grow together, your marriage becomes a real partnership,” Marilyn says. “You accept each other as you are.” Over the years, the relationship becomes more comfortable. “And a sense of humor helps,” Dale laughs. Looking back, Marilyn smiles, “We made the right decision.”

Marilyn and Dale Hoffman Wedding 1961

Marilyn and Dale moved to The Covington from their home in Palos Verdes, where they had lived for 50 years. “We were interested in a cottage,” Dale says, “and we knew people who already lived at The Covington, so were familiar with the fantastic amenities.” The nonprofit status was important to The Hoffmans as well. They like how friendly the people are, and especially all the activities available. “The transition was seamless,” he says. 13

Leslie and Roger Sievers When Leslie and Roger were young lovers in Ohio, Roger was accepted to study business at Stanford University. Determined to stay together, he and Leslie married and moved west in 1964. This year they will be celebrating 60 years of marriage. Leslie and Roger lived in the Los Altos community of the Bay Area, however when their son moved to Southern California, they knew that they would be moving at some point as well and followed in 2013. Roger’s father had lived in a retirement community and had a wonderful experience, while Leslie’s mother had chosen to stay in her primary home, which grew more and more isolating as time progressed. Given this knowledge, they knew which choice they wanted to make. They became residents of The Covington in early 2022. When Roger and Leslie moved in, they were surprised by the welcome. “I wasn’t expecting how friendly everyone would be,” Roger says. “on our first day, from the moment we emerged from our new place, we were greeted warmly by every single person. “It’s such a positive environment.” “Our daughter-in-law recently thanked us for moving here,” Leslie continues. “It means that we maintain our independence while not putting the burden of decision making on them.” And should a health event happen, The Covington has the care and expertise available right here.

Leslie and Roger Sievers in the Bar at the Covington

“And I do not miss meal planning, cleaning up or grocery shopping,” Leslie laughs. The community means that they have more time in their day to pursue their interests. The secret to their long, happy marriage? First off, Leslie says, “make sure you marry someone you like.” Young love can make you think the person is “perfect from their nose to their toes,” she says. But as you get to know the other person and spend more time with them, you find things you didn’t expect. “You realize they aren’t perfect and neither are you. But if you truly like them, then you enjoy spending time with them,” she says. “The longer you’re married, the deeper the connection,” Roger says.

Leslie and Roger Sievers wedding 1964

Yet as they witnessed, happy marriages can happen at any age. They have watched residents at The Covington meet and fall in love. One couple came together in friendship when both partners lost their spouse. They eventually fell in love and are now married. From these three couples, we’ve taken away a strong reassurance that through to our golden years, love is real and thriving; and having the right community around you brings further abundance. The Covington offers a warm welcome for individuals and couples from all backgrounds, cultures and faiths. Set on 12 leafy acres, with luxury amenities like a heated indoor pool, personalized health-and-wellness plans, koi pond, lush gardens and 3 exceptional dining venues to choose from, The Covington delivers the choice, freedom, and flexibility all seniors deserve. They might not think much of it, but when movement is constrained, the blood circulation in the legs is restricted. This can contribute to heavy legs, leg pain and swollen feet and ankles. Prolonged sitting is also a major risk factor for the development of phlebitis and Deep-vein Thrombosis (DVT). Deep-vein Thrombosis involves the formation of blood clots (thrombi) in the deep leg veins during prolonged inactivity. In some cases, blood clots 16

Welcome LiveSmart Technologies! A new and exciting company has arrived in Laguna Woods to help community members and South County residents with a “tech made easy” approach.

A

ctually, the company isn’t new given that is has been in business since 2015 – but “new” in the sense that the owner has moved into Laguna Woods and will focus on community members in/ around the area. LiveSmart features three (3) primary areas of: 1) Home automation 2) Simple security systems 3) Networking and IT for the home Before you write this off as “not for me,” there are a few things you should know first. The burgeoning world of home automation is expanding greatly and mostly service two extremes of the market: The Do It Yourself (DIY) “techies” and the high-end wealthy. Not anymore. LiveSmart sits squarely in between these two extremes to serve what they view as the “middle market” with vary affordable solutions for everyone. This includes providing some very easy, yet powerful, ways to assist community members simplify tasks in

their homes. This leads to increased safety and peace of mind as well as saving money. We sat down with the owner, Gary Russell, to delve into this further. Question: How did you get started in this industry? What is your background? Answer: I became interested in the “smart home” around 2012. I did some research and then went to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) which I did most years. After surveying the various emerging offerings, I was hooked and got the idea for the business. My background is in systems engineering and program management so starting a business like LiveSmart made perfect sense. I had been at a few different start-ups holding senior level positions which helped with business management and leadership. Interesting that my last “corporate” job was senior director of command

& control systems at Raytheon in Fullerton, CA. When you think about it, this is what the smart home is all about. Obtaining sensor information and making decisions automatically based on this information. So ironically a great fit. Q: What do you see as the main benefits of a smart home? A: So many. First, things can be automated. Everything from your lights, to temperature settings to gorgeous motorized shades to pool and spa filtration systems. Sort of a “set and forget” type of approach. Plus they are all integrated – meaning the shades can automatically adjust based on temperature or light levels. This not only keeps you more comfortable but also saves money and energy. The integration is the key and I’ll talk about this more because it’s so important. You don’t want one system (app) for your thermostat, another for your lights and yet another for locks. You want them integrated so that all work together in a holistic system. This doesn’t need to be ghastly expensive anymore. It’s really very affordable and we customize everything for you. Then there is the “command & control” part whereby you can change the temperature, turn on a light or unlock a door from just about anywhere. This may sound trivial but it’s super powerful. Q: Can you give an example of how this could be used for a senor community member living alone in their home? A: I’m glad you asked. Ok, let’s say it’s bed time. You climb into bed and there is a convenient button on the

18

nightstand. You push that button and the following happens: All lights are turned off. All locks are locked up if by chance any were left unlocked. The thermostat is adjusted to the preferred nighttime temperature. A little light momentarily turns “green” to let you know it’s all secured for the night. A text message is sent to your loved one that reads “All secure at Mom’s place tonight”. Just a single button does all that. Easy, yet powerful. Q: Besides home automation, what else does LiveSmart provide? A: In addition to home automation, we install security cameras and help homes and small businesses with their networking needs. Real simple things like setting up your network, ensuring best WiFi coverage, ensuring all printers and scanners work well, etc. All very affordable. Q: You say “affordable.” Can you give an example of this? A: We are offering some “smart” packages and an introduction to the community. They are located here on our web site: https://livesmarttech. com/affordable-automation/. Note that all include installation which means you get the low price of DIY but with us handling everything for you and getting it set up. Once you have the foundation, it’s easy to add things later as your budget and interest allow. Plus there are no monthly fees or contracts required!

Ketamine Therapy for TreatmentResistant Depression and Anxiety:

A DOCTOR’S PERSPECTIVE ON SAFETY AND POTENTIAL BENEFITS By Tanya Dall, MD and Justin Yanuck, MD

In the realm of mental health treatment, the landscape is constantly evolving, with researchers and clinicians exploring innovative approaches to address conditions like treatment-resistant depression and anxiety.

O

ver the last 20 years research has been done with ketamine for patients who have not gotten relief with traditional antidepressants and antianxiety medicines. Over the last 5 years building off of this mounting evidence, physicians have started to provide Ketamine in monitored settings for patients undergoing treatment. As Medical Doctors, we aim to shed light on the safety considerations and potential benefits of ketamine therapy for individuals struggling with persistent depression and anxiety. Ketamine has long been recognized for its anesthetic properties and analgesic effects. However, recent studies have unveiled its remarkable potential in treating mental health conditions, particularly when traditional approaches have proven ineffective. It’s important to note that the use of ketamine for mental health concerns is typically done in a controlled and supervised clinical setting, administered by qualified healthcare professionals. Safety is a paramount concern in any medical treatment, and ketamine therapy is no exception. When administered responsibly under the guidance of a medical doctor, ketamine has shown a favorable safety profile. The dosages used for mental health treatment are typically much lower than those used in surgical procedures, minimizing the risk of adverse effects. Patients are carefully screened for any contraindications, and their medical history is thoroughly evaluated to ensure the suitability of ketamine therapy for their specific condition. 20

One of the primary advantages of ketamine therapy is its rapid onset of action. Traditional antidepressants can take weeks or even months to manifest their effects, leaving individuals grappling with the debilitating symptoms of depression and anxiety. Ketamine, on the other hand, has been shown to produce noticeable improvements in mood and anxiety levels within hours of administration. This rapid response is particularly beneficial for those in acute distress or facing a crisis. Moreover, ketamine acts on a different neurotransmitter system compared to conventional antidepressants. While most antidepressants primarily target serotonin, ketamine influences the glutamate system, leading to the release of neurotrophic factors that promote the growth of new synaptic connections. This unique mechanism of action provides a fresh perspective on treatment options for individuals who have not responded well to traditional approaches. Another noteworthy aspect of ketamine therapy is its potential to alleviate suicidal ideation. For those facing the darkest depths of depression, the relief provided by ketamine can be transformative. Research has shown that ketamine rapidly reduces suicidal thoughts, offering a glimmer of hope to individuals who may have exhausted conventional treatment options. It’s crucial to emphasize that ketamine therapy is not a standalone solution but rather a valuable tool in a comprehensive treatment plan. Counseling, psychotherapy, and ongoing support are integral components that complement

Dr. Justin Yanuck, Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician and Board Certified Pain Medicine Physician and Dr. Tanya Dall, Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician

the benefits of ketamine. The goal is to create a holistic approach that addresses the multifaceted nature of mental health. As with any medical intervention, potential risks and side effects exist, but they are generally mild and transient when ketamine is administered in a controlled environment. These may include dissociation, increased heart rate, and elevated blood pressure during the infusion. The close monitoring by medical professionals ensures prompt intervention if any adverse reactions occur. In conclusion, ketamine therapy presents a promising avenue for individuals grappling with treatment-resistant depression and anxiety. Its safety profile, rapid onset of action, and unique mechanism of action make it a compelling option for those who have not found relief through traditional methods. However, it is imperative that individuals considering ketamine therapy do so under the guidance of a qualified medical professional, ensuring a personalized and monitored approach to treatment. As the field of mental health continues to evolve, embracing innovative and evidence-based interventions like ketamine therapy may pave the way for renewed hope and healing. How Can I Tell If I Have Skin Cancer? There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs. 22

L

ook especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.

WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW 1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.

ACTINIC KERATOSIS

An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.

BASAL CELL CARCINOMA

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.

2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life. 3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match? B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin? C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue? D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.

SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.

MELANOMA

Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.

E - Evolution: Has it changed? F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others? 4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine. 23

Lead-Free, Leak-Free Pipe Protection By Jody Robinson

It is safe to say that I know nothing about pipes. I know a little about drywall, and some about framing; my husband has his general contractor’s license so I’ve picked up a few nuggets of knowledge over the years - albeit in conversation, not in practice.

P

ipes, however, are a complete mystery. I have family who live on the East Coast, where pipes seem to burst with some degree of frequency in the winter, but that is the extent of my experience via six degrees of separation. Since our family moved into our “new” home in San Juan Capistrano a few years ago, we have since become something of an expert on experts: those who do and don’t know anything about pipes. There are a bunch of things I can now catch you up on: leaks, sprinkler lines, lead testing. But truly, all you need to know is this: In many cases, ePIPE can have your pipes restored the same day without displacing you from your home. Topping my list of folks I’d call expert, ePIPE has been in business since 1999. With over 40 international and US-based patents, the company has contracts with the US Department of Defense, several counties across the States, schools, HOA’s, and thousands of individual homeowners nationwide. Jason Houck, National Sales Director notes “twenty years ago this process was developed to be more convenient, less destructive, longer lasting, and healthier. Now it’s a patented, proven process used around the globe.” Traditional systems wreak havoc on a home, tearing up floors, walls, and ceilings. To get to the pipe, you have to get everything else out of the way: and then to replace the pipe, you have to remove what is there. “Instead of re-piping, we restore pipes in place. Many homes can be completed in a day, with the water going back on in a number of hours.” 26

Pool piping, fire sprinkler systems, water lines - ePIPE deals with it all. They’ll even test for lead and remediate as a LeadSmart® Service provider. Any number of factors can lead to corrosion in a system, often in as little as two years after installation. Any number of factors can lead to pinhole or slab leaks. So what happens next? If your pipes were simply failing due to changing water chemistry, perhaps you’re wondering if there is a better pipe? Turns out the restoration of your pressurized system can be as simple as drying, cleaning and applying ePIPE's patented epoxy coating. “The cleaning process prepares the internal pipe surface for proper bonding,” says Jason. “A bit like sanding before you paint.” In researching what ePIPE has to offer in terms of the process, I don’t see the word drilling, or destruction, or demolition anywhere. Taking care of

a problem once it begins is one thing, but ensuring that you won’t have that problem for years down the road is entirely different. Restored piping protects against corroding and pitting, in turn reducing copper and lead leaching. “Because there is no need to destroy walls, ceilings, or floors, you save a significant amount of money in reconstruction costs,” says Jason. “I’ll keep saying it: we do the work without the mess and expense.” Ranked in the top 1% of over 300,000 California contractors, ePIPE is here to ensure your pipes deliver the way they were made to. That’s really all I need to know.

By Jody Robinson

When I was younger, my Mom loved to read me the book “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie.” The plot essentially revolves around an ever-growing list of to-do’s that had to be accomplished, all set into motion by the simple act of giving a mouse a cookie. This tale came back to me recently when I purchased a new television at Best Buy.

W

hat was a simple shopping trip ended up being an adult’s version of that circular tale. If you give a grownup a television, they’ll have to measure their wall. When they measure the wall, they’ll realize they may actually have room for a bigger television. When they buy the bigger television, they’ll find out they have no idea how to mount it to the wall. When they start mounting it to the wall, they’ll see that the power outlets are all in the wrong 30

places. When they realize the outlets need to be moved, they’ll call an electrician. (This could go on forever.) Luckily for clients who have been on the receiving end of ReelTime’s patient, intelligent, and personalized service, the rabbit hole of home automation doesn’t have to swallow you entirely. With the help of their independent certified Control4 dealer, it’s easy to update your home without upending your entire life.

After all, the true luxury of an integrated entertainment system is really dependent on its ability to deliver seamless entertainment. By placing every control at your fingertips, the team at ReelTime helps homeowners manage everything from how brightly lit your family room is, to your streaming devices - all with a single remote. And best yet? You can control your whole home from the comfort of your couch- even seeing who is at the front door, without ever

leaving your seat. Simple, clean, and uncluttered. And on the home entertainment front … when you started planning for your ultimate home theater set-up and sound system, could you find the right media cabinetry for your particular space – cabinetry that wouldn’t catch on fire from the heat of the equipment, or that would simply

We’re here to make sure you get the equipment that will give you what you want and the system that will work with that equipment, without leaving you to fend for yourself.” look good in the room? Did you understand half of what the televisions, receivers and other devices could do, and did you have anyone to hold your hand to make sure you weren’t overspending for what you wanted? Big box retailers, the professed champions of value, are happy to sell you any home theater and sound equipment you think you might like, and send you off to figure it out at home. That’s what they do. And that’s all they do. If you want the home theater system that you envision, seek the services of Skip Myers and his team of experienced professionals at ReelTime to take you from start to finish for the home theater or sound system of your dreams. “Usually there is a part of the job that you find you just can’t do by yourself,” says Skip, who has overseen the design and installation of thousands of home theater and sound systems over the course of 40-plus years in the business. “You get your brand new television home, you’re so excited, then you realize you need to move an outlet or none of the cabinets you can find will fit your space.

Skip opened the doors at ReelTime in 1983. Today, the technicians and designers that Skip assigns to clients are all ReelTime employees, knowledgeable in all home theater and sound technologies. First, they work closely with you to determine what you’re looking for. Then they custom design every aspect of the project, from wiring to custom-built cabinets, frames, or built-in wall designs. Finally, licensed, in-house contractors install your entertainment system with care and precision.

Skip is also an advocate for getting what you’ll use, which is part of the design and planning process.

There are a couple of things that people may not think about when they embark upon the road to their own home entertainment system.

“You can buy everything you want to, but if you can’t operate it, what’s the point?” he says. “There’s the television, DVD and Blue-ray; there’s the receiver, there’s Apple TV… it’s all great, but how do you get them to work together? We’re big advocates of the universal remote. Not everyone knows how to get the most out of their systems with one powerful remote – they’re not expensive, but the best ones are computer-based. We’ll set that up for you so you’re getting the most out of your custom system.”

“You need to think about your home theater goals,” says Skip. “You don’t have to do everything at once – you can do it bit by bit – but if you know where you’re going, you’ll save money and when it’s all said and done, you’ll have exactly what you want and what you will actually use. We’re here to help you determine your goals.”

It’s easy to assume that personal service is expensive, but a conversation with Skip and the experts at ReelTime is free. Ultimately, in planning your purchases for the right outcome, you’re likely to save money while avoiding chilling setbacks. The only chilling you want to be doing is in front of your fantasy home theater system.

Ask a SOMM By Jody Robinson

A good sommelier is a helper, a guide to finding the best wine for your food and experience. For this month’s installment, we again approached South County-based sommelier Micah Sampson for a bit of education about the wine/food pairings, whether the size and shape of the glass makes a difference and whether wine should be decanted before its served. Q Does white really go with

fish/seafood and red with red meat or is there some overlap?

A When in doubt the white with

seafood and red with red meat is a good rule. But of course, there’s definitely some overlap here when getting into the details. There are some fantastic lighter bodied red wines out there that can easily be paired with fish and other seafoods. Some of my favorites are Pinot Noir, Beaujolais, and Grenache, each of them have a light body with very light tannins, won’t overpower the delicate fish. And for red meats you can easily pour a full bodied white wine that has high acidity, think California Chardonnays, white Rhone blends, Rieslings and Chenin Blancs. All of these have nice body that can stand up to high fat red meats, and nice acidity that can shine through some of the more robust seasonings and marinades that are used to cook them.

Sommelier Micah Sampson 36

Q Does the shape/size of the

wine glass make a difference?

A This is one of those topics that I wish people took more seriously! In short, yes, the shape and size of the glass makes a huge difference! Wine glasses are designed with very specific shapes and sizes to help deliver wine aromas to your nose. If search “red wine glass” and “white wine glass” you’ll notice red wine glasses are much bigger and more bowl shaped, that’s because there are vapors coming off the wine as the alcohol slowly evaporates, those vapors are filled with compounds that help you taste the wine. White wines a typically chilled and won’t give off as much aromas, therefore the glass doesn’t need to be as large. Another reason for the smaller shape for whites is they don’t need need to aerate like reds do, less surface area reduces aeration and keeps the wine cooler. Reds on the other hand love to aerate and

therefore need all the surface area to slowly oxidize (in a good way). The bowl-shaped narrower opening at the top of the glass does two things that are both very important: 1) It helps trap the aromas into a smaller area to help you small them. Think about how much more difficult it would be to smell wine in a cereal bowl with an 8 inch opening than a wine glass with a 2 inch opening. 2) It helps keep the wine in the glass when you swirl the heck out of it, which you should do! I love swirling wine, it introduces oxygen (good oxidation) into the wine and gets all those great aromas swirling around the glass for you to smell!

Q Should I decant wine before

I drink it?

A Decanting can do wonders for

your wine, but it isn’t always necessary. You should have a nice decanter at home if you’re serious about enjoying some great red wines (don’t worry about decanting white wines), and that decanter should have a nice wide bottom that creates a ton of surface area when the wine is poured in, and a narrow top that keeps too much air from getting introduced and makes it easy to pour a glass. The types of red wines you’re decanting are usually full bodied reds that usually have a some age on them (like 5-10+ years), not those cheap red blends you’re buying for $8.99 at the market. The idea behind decanting is you’re introducing oxygen into the wine and a chemical change is happening, a lot of those volatile compounds (bad aromas) are evaporating off and the harsher tannins are softening up a bit, which allows you to enjoy the wine more. So, if you have a 2010 Barolo or a 2015 Napa Cabernet, let those bad boys decant for 30-60 minutes, maybe take some small sips and smells during that time so you can see how the wine changes.

Any occasion is the perfect one replete with excellent service by a warm and friendly staff. My husband and I love visiting during happy hour (3:30 pm - 6:30 pm daily) for a mini-date night with special pricing on delectable bites and sips (fine wine or craft cocktails). In fact, Brio dishes up some of the best Italian cuisine at the lowest prices in town. For starters, the Antipasto Italiano Platter arrives with an array of flavorful favorites - Prosciutto di Parma, artisan salame, fresh buffalo mozzarella, Tuscan olives, grilled artichoke hearts, roasted bell peppers and toasted ciabatta bread. Yum! A seafood aficionado? Try the Mare Platter which is made for sharing: Buttermilk battered calamari fritti, seared Ahi tuna and blue shrimp scampi.

I love the wood-fired pizzas here. They don’t make deep-dish-American-football-sweatpants pizza. No. They serve handmade, thin, crispy, flaky crust pizza. I had the Con Carne Pizza - a meat lover’s dream topped with pepperoni, Italian sausage, Brio house-made meatball and mozzarella cheese. You know, the kind of pie you sip wine with, reflecting on the old country while a hot steam of freshness rises poetically around you. Or, as others put it: one heck of a tasty pizza. For heartier appetites, I recommend the USDA Prime Cut filet mignon dusted with fresh herbs and cooked to perfection with a hearty Barolo wine reduction and fresh herbed butter, and favorites like the Rigatoni Casa Brio characterized by grilled chicken breast, caramelized onions, roasted garlic, baby spinach, cremini mushrooms, sweet baby peas and fresh basil topped with fresh buffalo mozzarella. Brio Tuscany Grille has an incredible selection of fine wines (and a full premium bar), great nightly specials and the kind of attentive-yet-unobtrusive service that makes any meal that much more enjoyable. Swinging through the South + the Big Friendly 72 Hours in Birmingham,Day-Tripping in Tupelo and an Overnight in OKC

By Jody Robinson

N

early a decade ago our family embarked on an ambitious plan to visit all 50 states as a family by the time our then-seven-yearold son graduates from high school. Now a junior, he and his 15-year-old younger sister are a pair of particularly well-traveled teens. Having crossed Alabama, Mississippi and Oklahoma off the list over the holiday break, we have 18 months to experience the remaining two states (Vermont and Michigan). Growing up with dreams of voyaging to far-flung locales but without the means to travel during my own childhood, I have to admit I might’ve lived vicariously through my own offspring over the years - viewing each destination through the wide-eyed lens of youth and exuberance. Thankfully my teenagers still seem to be enthusiastic adventurers today - a trait I hope will continue throughout their lives. Like many of their peers, their phones are always on their person, but I’m happy to report that the majority of the time spent on our family sojourns are screen free. 42

Such was the case from the moment we landed in Birmingham, a city characterized by Southern hospitality and contemporary charm, followed by a tour through Tupelo and ending in Oklahoma City – a trip that checked the boxes for education, entertainment, culture and cuisine (sampling several of the South’s best barbecue).

A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

Founded along two rail lines in the late 19th century, Birmingham boasts a storied history as an industrial town, renowned for its iron and steel production which led to its popular monikers “Iron City” and “Magic City,” the latter due to the fact that coal, iron ore and limestone (the three materials necessary to make steel) were all found in short distances from the 1st Avenue railroad. From the solemn streets of the Civil Rights District downtown to the extensive trails of Red Mountain to the lively bars and restaurants of Lakeview and Five Points South neighborhoods, the state’s largest city offers something for everyone, particularly history buffs, outdoor enthusiasts, foodies and music lovers. We visited during the winter to accommodate the kids school break and while the air was crisp, it was layering

weather. We’re told the best time to visit Birmingham is from March to May when the flowers and festival season are in full bloom and the temperate climate ideal for a myriad of outdoor activities.

WHERE TO STAY

Literally less than 10 minutes driving distance from the airport, the historic Hampton Inn & Suites Tutwiler Hotel (Hilton.com) – Magic City’s first modern hotel – proved to be the perfect home base from which to embark on our Birmingham adventures each day. From the grand marble entrance to the spacious guest rooms (our accommodation with two queen beds and a sofa bed provided plenty of space to stretch out) – all with expansive

windows highlighting the cityscape – and abundant amenities (full complimentary breakfast, snack shop, fitness center, on site restaurant and bar), this boutique hotel is a beautiful blend of old and new. Known in its early days as the “Grand Dame of Southern Hotels, The Tutwiler was a major hub for political, business and social gatherings. Guests ranged from President Warren G. Harding, Charles Lindbergh, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and Babe Ruth. Ideally situated in the heart of downtown, this 100+ year old hotel continues to house scores of dignitaries, celebrities and visitors each year. Our weekend began with a walking tour of the Civil Rights District led by native Alabamian Barry McNealy - a six-block stroll through the city’s history at a time when Birmingham was still deeply segregated. Our guide regaled us with tales surrounding several pivotal events, stopping at a number of churches, businesses, and other gathering places that played a fundamental role at the dawn of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. We learned that Birmingham pastor and civil rights activist Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth joined Martin Luther King Jr. to lead a series of nonviolent actions here in the early 1960s. Among the most vivid images to emerge from the era: police dogs and fire hoses turned against children as they marched for their rights and the faces of the young girls who died in the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church. Public outrage in the aftermath eventually led to the passage of the Civil Rights Act in 1964 and the “District” was es-

The historic Tutwiler Hotel tablished to preserve these sites, so their story lives on for future generations.

PARKS + RECREATION

Head to Red Mountain Park, a 1,500-acre wooded recreational area for 15 miles of challenging hiking and mountain biking trails, plus zip-lining, aerial adventure tours and rock climbing. Or see where history was forged at Vulcan Park and Museum. Cast from 100,000 pounds of local iron and designed by Italian artist Giuseppe Moretti in 1904, Birmingham’s colossal (the world’s largest in cast iron) statue stands as the 56 feet tall centerpiece of a dynamic educational park complex – a beloved symbol of the state’s rich industrial history.

DESTINATION DINING

While Birmingham showcases a diverse food scene (everything from pho and ramen to South American-inspired tapas and Greek dishes), we came for the classics - Alabama bar-

becue, shrimp and grits, and fried chicken. During our stay, we sampled a pair of establishments worthy of special mention: SAW’s BBQ and Demetri’s for mouthwatering plates of smoked meats - pulled pork, ribs, and smoked chicken enhanced by each eatery’s house-made rubs and sauces. After experiencing Demetri’s delicious open face barbecue pork and chicken sandwiches paired with house-made coleslaw and tasty cornbread, it’s easy to see why folks have been flocking here for flavorful homecooked meals since 1961. The service was excellent and the ambiance akin to a favorite locals hangout. Voted best barbecue in Alabama, SAW’s has six equally unassuming establishments in the city – the location we chose at the recommendation of the valet at our hotel was the original restaurant in nearby Homewood. Guests order at the counter, fill their own fountain drinks and grab a seat to await a hefty portion of slow-smoked meats. In our case, Styrofoam trays arrived piled high with smoked chicken quarters, meaty pork ribs and pulled pork along with staple Southern sides like deviled eggs, cheese grits and a mound of crisp-fried onion rings. 43

For this trip, I thought it might be fun to designate an afternoon of the vacation to each of the kids and put them in charge of picking out which activity the family would participate in, which food we’d eat, etc. After gaining a bit better understanding of how the Civil Rights Movement shaped Birmingham, we whiled away a couple of hours at the McWane Science Center. As the cornerstone of the city’s revitalization project, this hands-on stateof-the-art museum (similar to the Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana) allows of all ages to see, hear, touch, and experience the wonder of science in one of the South’s most Birmingham unique venues. Zoo Not surprisingly, my daughter selected the 122-acre Birmingham Zoo as her top choice. She particularly loves animals great and small and we’ve strolled through many a zoo in our travels. As one of the state’s most popular attractions, guests arrive from all over the region to get up close to approximately 550 animals of 180 species and endangered species from six continents, including red pandas, lions, reticulated giraffes, Sumatran orangutans, rhinos, bears, elephants, zebras, a jaguar and black-handed spider monkeys. Sign up for a “behind the scenes encounter” to walk on the wild side for an insider’s look at how the Zoo cares for the animals in its keep. The highlight of the trip for my auto enthusiast husband was The Barber Motorsports Park - an 880-acre, multi-purpose racing facility located on the city’s eastern fringes which 44

Barber Vintage Motorsport Museum includes the Barber Vintage Motorsport Museum, named “World’s Largest Motorcycle Museum” by the Guinness World Records. There was certainly no shortage of activities to fill a weekend away - National Landmarks, Civil Rights memorials and the Railroad Park Foundation. A Museum of Flight, Hall of Fame, Museum of Art, and more. We might need another trip to check everything off the list!

DAY-TRIPPING IN TUPELO

About an hour and a half drive from Birmingham lies a homegrown getaway – an ideal day trip to Tupelo to cross Mississippi off our 50 States list. The tiny town’s (rightful) claim to fame is that it is the birthplace of Elvis Presley so we thought

Elvis Presley Birthplace

it’d be an interesting afternoon paying homage to The King at Tupelo’s main attraction: Elvis Presley Birthplace (ElvisPresleyBirthplace.com). Well worth the drive, you’ll easily spend a couple of hours exploring the well-curated, sprawling grounds that traces the superstar’s humble roots – the two-room home he was born in with no electricity or running water that his father built using $180 he borrowed for supplies, the actual building where Elvis and his family attended church services (it was here that he was first introduced to the rich, Southern gospel that inspired much of his music throughout his career), a small museum and gift shop. Overseen by Executive Director Roy Turner (a local who like Elvis grew up on the “wrong side” of the tracks in Tupelo), the museum artfully charts the Presley family history, the young musician’s rise to fame and the impact Tupelo had on Elvis throughout his life. I have to admit the depth and breadth of my knowledge of Elvis was limited to familiarity with some of his more iconic songs and the recent (excellent) 2022 movie of the same name. So it was particularly inspiring to learn the story of Elvis’ early years and how he used his creative gifts to lift himself and his family out of poverty. While in town, stop by Tupelo Hardware, a fourth-generation family business that served an instrumental

(pun intended) role in the timeline of American music when it sold Elvis his first guitar in 1946. It seems the then 11-year-old had his sights set on a rifle and his mother walked him into the store with the intention of buying him a bicycle. As a compromise, Elvis got a guitar – and the rest is history. I haven’t been to Graceland in Memphis, but I expect that even the most ardent of fans will have a deeper appreciation after visiting the Elvis Birthplace & Museum having personally witnessed where the legend began.

NEXT STOP: OKLAHOMA CITY

On the way back to SoCal, we stopped for two days in OKC to round out our multi-state excursion. We spent a solemn afternoon at the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum. I remember watching the national tragedy unfold in the moments, days and weeks following the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building – a heinous act of domestic terrorism that killed 168 people, including 19 children and injured hundreds more. For my teenage kids, the events of April 19, 1995 were something they’d only read about in history books. For both generations, the national park site serves as a poignant symbol of unspeakable loss and a tribute to the strength of the human spirit. The “take it at your own pace” museum experience is an emotional one, as visitors follow a chronological timeline of events via an interactive tour which combines exhibits, archived news footage, newspaper features and video recordings of survivors, surviving family members and first responders to “remember those who were killed, those who survived and those changed forever.”

OKC ENTERTAINMENT

As recent as 1990, Bricktown (then known as the Waterfront District) wasn’t a place anyone wanted to visit, particularly after dark – the area defined by dilapidated buildings and high crime. Today, after a major revitalization project that included the creation of a canal and the opening

Bricktown Water Taxi of the Bricktown Water Taxi, the area is now a booming entertainment destination populated with busiNational Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum nesses like Bass Pro Shop and a 16-screen Within walking distance to Bricktown movie theater, scores of shops and is the Paycom Center, arena home to restaurants. Nearby attractions inthe Oklahoma Thunder. We caught clude the American Banjo Museum the NBA team’s annual New Year’s and the Chicksaw Bricktown Ballpark. Eve game against the Brooklyn Nets where the energy and excitement was palpable even from our nosebleed seats as the Thunder continued their hot streak to close out the calendar year with their fourth consecutive win.

The Bricktown Water Taxi (BricktownWaterTaxi.com) provided a great water’s view introduction to the gorgeous landscape and artwork along the canal, including the Oklahoma Land Run of 1889 when folks rushed in on horseback, by carriage and stagecoach to claim 160-acre plots of land. Created by native Oklahoman artist Paul Moore at the canal’s edge the Centennial Land Run Monument commemorates the historic event and at 365 feet long and 16 feet tall, the artwork is one of the world’s largest freestanding bronze sculptures.

A gem of an experience was time spent at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum (nationalcowboymuseum.org). The descriptions on its website simply doesn’t do justice to the size and scope of the site that pays homage to what is arguably the birthplace of the Wild West. Situated on Persimmon Hill in northeast Oklahoma City since 1955, the museum features an expansive collection of western paintings, sculptures and artifacts that help to interpret the cowboy’s history and Native American culture from the late 1800s to modern day. There are several stylishly organized galleries – including Art of the American West, the American Cowboy Gallery and our family’s favorite – a stroll through Prosperity Junction, a replica turn-of-thecentury cattle town. 45

Medicare Part B Costs Increase in 2024

T

he majority of Medicare beneficiaries don’t’ pay a premium each month for Part A, but they do for Part B. Their Part B premium will be automatically deducted from their social security check and if they aren’t taking social security yet then they get a bill from the Medicare (aka the government). The standard premium for Medicare Part B (outpatient and doctor services) in 2023 was $164.90. In 2024 it will increase to $174.70. So, the reprieve you had last year with the Part B premium decrease has gone away, and once again there is an increase in your Medicare Part B premium. The Medicare Part B deductible also increased; from $226 in 2023 to $240 in 2024. If your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) is above a certain amount, you will pay an Income Related Adjustment Amount (IRMAA). Medicare uses the modified adjusted gross income reported on your IRS tax return from 2 years ago. The IRS provides this information to Social Security. Notices for your IRMAA amounts have begun to arrive in the mail for 2024, so keep an eye out for that to avoid any surprises in the new year. There are 5 higher income brackets that cause a person to pay more for their Medicare Part B and an added assessment to their Part D (drug) coverage. In 2024 IRMAA will be assessed when an individual’s MAGI is above $103,000 and a married couple’s MAGI is above $206,000.

Ocean View School District’s Commitment to Excellence

N

estled in the picturesque city of Huntington Beach, the Ocean View School District (OVSD) offers an award-winning educational journey that spans from transitional kindergarten to eighth grade. With an unwavering commitment to innovation, safety, communication, exceptional staff, and positive interactions, the District sets the stage for an enriched learning experience that empowers students to become lifelong learners.

EARLY ENROLLMENT

OVSD opens doors to education from an early age, allowing parents with children aged four by September 1 to take advantage of early enrollment in transitional kindergarten. This program is defined as the first year of a two-year kindergarten program and focuses on the process of learning, which means helping students develop the skills required of effective learners.

INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS

Going beyond conventional education, OVSD offers a diverse selection of innovative programs that stimulate curiosity and create unique learning experiences. The Environmental Science program, enriched by access to 52

a 2.5-acre farm, allows students to immerse themselves in hands-on experiences in agricultural and environmental sciences, fostering a deep connection with the natural world. The Spanish Dual Language Immersion program provides the opportunity to become bilingual and biliterate in both Spanish and English. Students develop high levels of language proficiency and literacy in both languages, while preparing to become global citizens in a multilingual/multicultural environment. The District also supports a Visual & Performing Arts (VAPA) program that spans from elementary to middle school. Encompassing four disciplines - visual arts, dance, theater, and music (vocal and instrumental) - this program allows students to explore and develop their artistic talents. Understanding each student is unique, possessing individual interests and strengths, the District also offers Gifted and Talented Education (GATE); Science, Technology, Engi-

ACCELERATED MIDDLE SCHOOL

OVSD recognizes the importance of preparing students for the challenges of high school and beyond. Middle school students are provided with the unique opportunity to finish Algebra I and Geometry before entering high school. Additionally, eighth graders can enroll in Spanish 1, and upon successfully completing the course, they can advance to Spanish 2 as a high school freshman. Both of these opportunities enable students to navigate advanced coursework with confidence.

COMPREHENSIVE EDUCATION EXPERIENCE

From early enrollment opportunities and accelerated middle school programs to a wide array of innovative programs, the District is dedicated to providing students with a comprehensive education. The District’s commitment extends beyond academic excellence, creating positive, inclusive classroom environments where students thrive emotionally, socially, and intellectually. Ocean View School District is where students embark on a transformative journey towards a future of lifelong learning and success.

BRING DOWN THE HOUSE WITH THE

By Jody Robinson

I haven’t been a kid in a while. What I recall about music lessons is that they were forced, and more importantly, stodgy.

B

eginning somewhere around the fourth grade, students were advised to pick an instrument for class, and I can honestly say I only know two adults from those classes who still play those instruments today. Needless to say, my music classes were nothing like the offering at School of Rock Huntington Beach. A unique community of teachers, musicians, and families, School of Rock Huntington Beach sounds exactly like what it is, and also nothing like what it truly means. Founded in 2014 by a trio of performers, educators, and business owners, the industry welcomed them onto the scene with open arms. Larry Boodman, an alum of the Orange County School of the Arts, and Jeff Nunes were members of an L.A-based indie rock group known as Fourwayfree. Joey Acona, a production and performance instructor at OCSA for many years, knew Boodman through their common connections. “The School of Rock was borne from the desire to create a safe place for supportive collaboration among students, and has instilled confidence, self-esteem, and discipline that will serve them well into the future pur54

suit of any goal, not just music," says Jeff. Practical instruction meets professional performance education. The students learn on guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, or vocals. But their weekly private lesson is combined with a weekly group rehearsal, “as the students prepare for an actual rock show that they perform at the end of the season. Themed - ACDC, Arena Rock, or Grunge. And played on professional stages like the House of Blues Anaheim.” If you’re not sure what you’d like to specialize in just yet, no worries. School of Rock Huntington Beach provides a free trial lesson to anyone interested, and all are welcome to give them a try. Ages 6 to adult are brought into the fold, and “given the chance to learn team work, practice commitment, and master their chosen instrument. It makes learning not only fun and engaging, but a team sport.” Glad I don’t have to be a kid to go back to School (of Rock).

Sun Soaked Santa Barbara Staycation

By Jody Robinson

I

f you have an idea in your mind’s eye that bubbles up to the surface when I mention the town of Santa Barbara, I’m not going to try and convince you that it isn’t accurate. It likely is. Sun-soaked sandy shore, beautiful mountains to the northeast, and in between, all the good food and family fun you could ask for. There are beautiful towns, and then there’s Santa Barbara. West of France and just north of Los Angeles lies one of the best kept secrets in the world of wine. A destination for a great many reasons pristine beaches, incredible shopping, local dining and wine that keeps folks coming back for more. Stretching back through the annals of California history, from the Mission to the Pueblo era, grapes have been growing in the approved American Viticultural areas. Combining traditional, hand-made techniques with the latest innovations in grape growing and wine making, Santa Barbara 56

continues to see cutting-edge results and flavors come through the county. Since the 1970’s, when viticulture pioneers expanded the growing varietals, more than 275 vineyards have sprung up, contributing to a hefty economic value per harvested acreage. Not that you’re traveling to see the outcome of bringing 9,000+ jobs to the area through one industry, but keeping the coast in its cups is no small feat. The grapes, always unique and bullheaded, take advantage of east-west valleys running through the coastal Santa Ynez and inland San Rafael range. Hearty, sun-kissed, and delectable, there’s no better time to visit than the present.

For our recent visit, we selected a pair of downtown tasting rooms to sample local varietals - Grassini Family Vineyards and Longoria on State. Both were lovely - the first, located just off State Street in the Historic Presidio Neighborhood – Grassini is a boutique winery specializing in the handcrafted production of wines made exclusively from Bordeaux varietals grown on the Grassini estate vineyard in the Happy Canyon AVA (American Viticultural Area) of Santa Ynez. Established by pioneer winemaker Rick Longoria, Longoria Wines has been producing acclaimed artisanal wines from sone of the finest vineyards in the region for more than 40 years. Purchased in 2022 by Brooke and Lindsay Christian, the winery continues its tradition as a family-owned and operated establishment. The tasting room, located in the heart of the bustling shopping and dining destination on the State Street Promenade, captures the city’s

coastal chic vibe in its warm, welcoming space. The service is super attentive and the wines were divine. We purchased bottles at both tasting rooms to extend our Santa Barbara wine tasting experience at home.

Speaking of home, our home base during our weekend staycation was the intimate and elegrant Brisas del Mar, Inn at the Beach. Ideally situated within walking distance to virtually everything we wanted to explore (just two blocks from the glistening, palm-lined beach and scenic yacht harbor and a few minutes stroll to State Street), Brisas del mar is a Santa Barbara classic in terms of its accommodation and Old World ambiance. The suite we selected was super spacious, with plenty of room for the four of us to stretch out and its full kitchen came in handy as a pit stop to refuel and refresh between excursions.

Grassini Family Vineyards

The hotel serves a fresh continental breakfast and beverages each morning, which was the perfect way to start the day. In the afternoon, the hotel hosts a wine and cheese reception and in the evening? Cold milk and scrumptious cookies. What more could we ask for?

SANTA BARBARA PARASAIL

Feeling adventurous? Strap in for an exhilarating flight with Santa Barbara Parasail, California’s top-rated parasail operator. Never heard of it? Think about any action movie you’ve ever seen, where a parachute unfurls over an azure sea, and lofts the good guy into the sky from the back of a

Longoria glistening speedboat deck: now just put yourself in the seat! Take a cruise 1000 feet over the sea and enjoy incredible views of the Channel Islands, Santa Barbara’s splendid south-facing coastline, or simply let the breeze flow through your hair and the sun kiss your face. With flight times varying from 8-15 minutes and a minimum rider age of 5, there’s no better time to fly, and certainly no time for regrets.

TROLLEY TOUR

Visiting The American Riviera at any time of year is a treat, but not having to hoof it on your own two legs while seeing the sights has a special place in my heart. There is no better way to experience Santa Barbara than by trolley. Fully narrated, the original SB Trolley Tour has been in operation for over 30 years, showcas-

to include some of the most beloved sights along the entire California coast.

SANTA BARBARA ZOO

Home to more than 500 animals, this zoo-with-a-view is set on 30 acres near the Santa Barbara waterfront. The California Trails exhibit complex features threatened and endangered California natives like the spectacular California condor, Channel Island foxes, bald eagles, California desert tortoises, and threatened reptiles and amphibians native to nearby Los Padres National Forest, underscoring the zoo’s dedication to sailing preservation and conservation in the natural world. My daughter and I especially loved the Australian Walkabout, a 15,000

square-foot habitat that transports guests “Down Under,” where they can walk among the wallabies, kangaroos, emus and native birds. And we literally spent a half an hour oohing and aahing over the zoo’s newest addition: a Masai giraffe calf born on November 2nd. 57

HORSEBACK RIDING ON THE BEACH

It’s a no brainer to imagine that every activity on the California coastline would be sun-drenched and cinematic. It would follow then, that taking a beach ride with Los Padres Outfitters and their magnificent horses would be at least a majestic way to spend an afternoon: and at best, a core memory you’ll carry for years to come. Starting in the hills of Summerland, and meandering down a trail to the sandy expanse of Santa Barbara’s southern-facing shores (the longest stretch in the US outside of Alaska), the ride gives you time with a knowledgeable wrangler and some of the most well-trained, friendly horses in California. Book a private group ride for the whole family, or steal away while the kids are streaming a movie in the hotel room and watch the sun set over the sparkling Pacific together. Either way, let Los Padres use their local knowledge to wow you with an adventure you’ll be talking about for years to come. And then there’s dining ... with so many options, you’ll have your work cut out for you in deciding upon on the culinary adventure in which to embark each evening. For our part, we indulged in two distinctly different offerings - Loquita and Gala. 58

This lively eatery showcases authentic Spanish dishes, including hot and cold tapas, wood-fired seafood and meats and its signature seasonal paella. Our family loved the chorizo y pollo which arrived chock full of the flavorful pork sausage, rocky freerange chicken, gigante beans, hen of the woods, salmorra, shishito and lemon aioli. A sweet treat at meals end? My husband and I barely enjoyed a taste of the churros with dulce de leche, passionfruit vanilla and Mexican chocolate - it was all arms and elbows as our teens literally devoured the dessert. The Mediterranean climate and terroir of Santa Barbara County mirror that of Spain, making the translation of locally sourced produce, meats and seafood an ideal match. The wine list is composed almost entirely of Spanish wines with exceptional local wines that pair well with the cuisine.

GALA

Our new favorite downtown eatery? Gala, which opened earlier this year, has already made a name for itself with its elegant ambiance and a perfectly executed menu

Gala

of delectable dishes - some remain constant while others rotate daily per seasonal offerings and inspiration depending on what looks good at the farmer’s market and what local divers are bringing in. High ceilings, wide open windows, a large bar overlooking the bustle of State Street define the space - these define the vibrant space that its owners Tara Penke and Jaime Riesco envision as the “a true neighborhood restaurant where lawyers and surfers rub shoulders.” Having spent 20 years in Barcelona (and owning a restaurant there) and here in Santa Barbara, the couple utilize farmers market and fish market ingredients in every plate to create a flavorful spin on an eclectic menu that includes small bites, entrees, seafood specialties. Think inventive dishes like the crunchy ‘coca’ Catalan flatbread, salmon gravlax toasties (house-cured salmon, creme fraiche, dill, radish, fried capers) and oyster mushroom risotto which deliciously combines butter, thyme, parm, oyster and portobello mushrooms. With plenty to do, see and eat just over an hour from Los Angeles, there’s no better time to visit the American Riviera - because, well, there’s no bad time to visit.

Cefali & Cefali, APC Trusted Accident Attorneys for the Most Serious Injuries By Jody Robinson

It’s a remarkable feeling when you can find someone to take your side. In relationships, sports: you name it. That one person who believes in you, makes you better, fights alongside you.

M

ichael Cefali matched with his person (his wife Courtney) long before law school - but their partnership extended through the long years studying for the bar and paid off in an even match that has stacked up in their favor many times over. Graduates of Chapman Law and California Western, respectively, they started the San Juan Capistrano-based Cefali & Cefali, APC in July of 2019 and have been fighting for the little guy ever since. From setting clients up with top-tier doctors and specialists, to negotiating stellar settlements, Cefali & Cefali, APC handles cases from start to finish with client health as their top priority.

it was very apparent that he cared about me and my case! He and his team are so HONEST and FAIR and it was clear from start to finish that he had my best interest in mind! Not only is he a good lawyer but he is a good person which made a world of difference for me. I could not have asked for a better experience with a personal injury attorney! I have already recommended him to all of my friends and I will continue to recommended him to anyone looking for a good lawyer! Thank you so much Cefali and Cefali!”

Another client Carrie echoes Jamie’s sentiment, “My husband and I were rear-ended on the freeway. We felt bad thinking of contacting a lawyer, but after several months of continuous pain and medical treatments, a friend recommended Michael Cefali. From the beginning, he lived up to his core values of integrity, loyalty, and vigorous advocacy. Michael is a dedicated, friendly, and competent attorney who seamlessly represented our interests and ensured the outcome was in our favor. He treated us not like a client, but like family; he

Focusing on all aspects of personal injury, the Cefalis are what you might expect in such a ring: passionate, aggressive, and most importantly, honest - all traits that have contributed to the couple having recovered millions of dollars per year on behalf of their clients since opening their firm. “The insurance companies would like you to think that they get to determine the value of your injuries, your suffering,” says Michael. “We’ll fight for every last penny because we know that you deserve it.” Clients appreciate the work that the Cefalis do. In fact, as of the date of this publication, you won’t find a single negative review of their firm anywhere on the internet. Client Jamie shares, “I am so grateful for everything that Mike Cefali and his team did for me! Not only was he able to help me get what I was owed in my settlement and then some, but he was so responsive and kind and 60

was there any time we needed him. He was empathetic to our situation and worked tirelessly with all parties to represent us. We don’t trust many people, but we trust Michael and his team and would highly recommend him to anyone seeking a professional, effective, and focused attorney.” With five staff members to back up the stellar work Michael and Courtney produce, the couple remain incredibly hands on, based on a culture of empathy, integrity and advocacy. “We craft each case personally, build each one for trial, and remain accessible to clients,” says Michael. “Personal injury attorneys get a bad rap when really we’re the good guys. I like to think of our firm as a pirate ship. Nimble, clever, and tenacious in spite of being outspent by the adversary, we pry money from greedy insurance companies and give it to our very deserving clients.” Giving back is the spirit of the firm, and community work creates a direct link between Michael, Courtney, and their circle in San Juan Capistrano. The couple and their team proudly supports a number of local charitable and community organizations including: The Boys and Girls Club of Capistrano Valley (Courtney is on the Board of Directors), The San Juan Capistrano Friends of the Library (Courtney is also a board member), CREER, the Pacific Marine Mammal Foundation, and Project Coyote. Michael is a member of the San Juan Capistrano Rotary Club and has been recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow. The Cefali team’s ethics, constant communication (every client is given Michael’s personal cell phone for easy accessibility), commitment to their clients and involvement in the community keeps everyone growing stronger and healthier together. Remarkable isn’t it, that feeling when someone takes your side?

Mission Viejo Wigs:

Where Customers are “Family”

M

by Jody robinson

ission Viejo Wigs is truly a family business. Not in the traditional sense, where its owners and operators share the same genes. But rather in such a way that every person who has walked through Owner Betty Darroch’s doors in the 30+ years she has been in operation immediately felt like a member of Darroch’s extended family.

As a professional hair and wig stylist since 1962, Betty began her career at CBS where her résumé reads like a celebrity screenplay starring the coifs of a veritable “who’s who” of Hollywood: Ann Margaret, Carol Lawrence, the Midnight Specials and the Sonny & Cher Show. She went on to work for the Hallelujah Hollywood Show at the MGM Hotel in Las Vegas. But it wasn’t until she opened her own business in Mission Viejo that she felt as though she were “truly doing God’s work.” Her clients today include people who are experiencing hair loss due to chemotherapy treatment, alopecia or other medical conditions. Betty specializes in wigs, hairpieces and toupees for women, men and children and carries only the highest quality brands. Each wig or hairpiece is custom fit to the client for the most natural look and feel – no one will know you’re wearing a wig unless you tell them. “Hair loss, whether it is the result of illness, the aging process or heredity, can be a traumatic and emotionally draining experience,” says Betty. “We work with people on a daily basis who are facing the issue of hair loss for the first time. Our goal is to help you find the solution that works best for you and do so in a caring way that makes you realize that you are not alone.” There are wonderful testimonials from longtime customers on her web site (missionviejowigs. com), but for me, the best testament to Betty’s genuine, caring nature came from a source closer to home. When my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer six years ago, there were so many aspects of what she was facing - including the side effects associated wit chemotherapy treatment – that were out of our control. But my mother’s appearance was something she felt she could dictate. We knew she would lose her hair, but she was determined not to “look like a sick person.” From the moment my mother met Betty, she knew she had found the right place and more importantly, the right person to help her. Betty shared so many stories of survival – of longtime customers and friends who fought a similar battle and won. Her warm embrace and inspired hope and help steel her resolve to maintain a positive, fighting attitude when she was diagnosed with lung cancer. The wig Betty selected was the perfect color and style for my mother’s face (and head) shape. The wig was so natural looking that my mother

received many compliments on her “new do” and no one was the wiser. It’s been over nine years since my mother completed treatment and is now leading a cancer-free life. Although her own hair has long since grown back, she still often prefers to wear Betty’s wigs on “bad hair days.” Thank you Betty!
