WiseDecisionswith RetirementinMind Certainfinancial&lifestylechoicesmay leadyoutowardabetterfuture.
Some retirees succeed at realizing the life they want; others don’t. Fate aside, it isn’t merely a matter of investment decisions that makes the difference. There are certain dos and don’ts – some less apparent than others – that tend to encourage retirement happiness and comfort.
Retire financially literate. Some retirees don’t know how much they don’t know. They end their careers with inadequate financial knowledge, and yet, feel they can prepare for retirement on their own. They mistake creating a retirement income strategy with the whole of preparing for retirement, and gloss over longevity risk, risks to their estate, and potential health care expenses. The more you know, the more your retirement readiness improves.
A goal to retire debt free – or close to debt free? Even if your retirement savings are substantial, you may want to consider reviewing your overall debt situation.1
Retire with purpose. There’s a difference between retiring and quitting. Some people can’t wait to quit their job at 62 or 65. If only they could escape and just relax and do nothing for a few years – wouldn’t that be a nice reward? Relaxation can lead to inertia, however – and inertia can lead to restlessness, even depression. You want to retire to a dream, not away from a problem.
The bottom line? Retirees who know what they want to do – and go out and do it – are positively contributing to their mental health and possibly their physical health as well. If they do something that is not only vital to them, but important to others, their community can benefit as well.
Retire healthy. Smoking, drinking, overeating, a dearth of physical activity – all these can take a toll on your capacity to live life fully and enjoy retirement. It is never too late to change habits that may lead to poor health.
Retire where you feel at home. It could be where you live now; it could be a nearby place where the scenery and people are uplifting. If you find yourself lonely in retirement, then look for ways to connect with people who share your experiences, interests, and passions; those who encourage you and welcome you. This social interaction is one of the great, intangible retirement benefits.

DARE TO stay young!
By Sunao Gilbert, MD, FAARFM, ABAARM
Do you ever wonder why a 70-year-old person may not look a day over 40? Conversely, we have all met the 40-year-old who sadly looks 70.
We are pretty clear on how to age more rapidly than we should e.g., alcohol, to bacco, drugs, fast food, and sodas. But why are we less aware of how to stay young?
Why is it okay to diplo matically receive the answer, “…it’s a part of aging” when you ask your physician “Why am I always tired and have no energy?”
Wellness, youth, what does it mean?
Self-esteem? Energy?
Low Stress? Quality sleep? Firm and glow ing skin? A happy mood? Thick and shiny hair? Strong bones? A fit body? Quality sex?
A positive outlook on life? It’s all of the above and it is achievable. However, it takes patience, persistence, and time.
It is an erroneous belief that youthfulness is unattainable and that it is inevitable to spend the golden years of life dilapidated and chronically ill. This myth has been disproven. In fact, there are documented ways to reverse your biological clock. However, it seems
that it’s a well-kept secret. But now is the time for the veil to
We are not a slave to our genes as was previously taught. We may have a predisposition to a certain illness based on our genes, but what determines whether those certain genes get “turned on” and whether illness becomes a reality, is the environment in which we house our genes.
We know that we are what we eat, and we know it’s important to exercise and maintain a healthy weight, but there is more, much more. So, what is the answer?
The answer is Functional Medicine also known as Regenerative or Anti-Aging Medicine.
Functional Medicine looks at the body as a whole symphony and works to optimize the body on a cellular
Sunao Gilbert, MD
level so that each organ, its systems and all the body processes are working at an optimal level. When each cell is functioning optimally, the body can work and heal itself as it was designed. Functional Medicine works to fine tune each organ system, biochemically on a cellular level, for the systems to harmonize like a beautiful symphony. It employs advanced testing and in-depth questioning to look for answers and then uses micronutrients, bio-identical hormones, supplements, peptides, pesticide free foods, lifestyle changes and many other modalities to replenish and rebalance the body and mind. It focuses on minimizing environmental toxic exposures, helping the individual achieve quality sleep, good gut health, a healthy weight, a balance between work and relaxation and does not neglect the importance of a robust libido.
Functional Medicine sees complaints such as lack of energy, pain in the joints and rashes as a harbinger of a much larger problem. It looks to find the cause of the symptoms instead of prescribing a medication to quiet your body’s cry for help.
Unfortunately, our current system of medicine focuses on disease, not dysfunction. Consequently, most symptoms are just quelled until they fester into a huge problem that can then be labeled as a disease. Only, then are your medications and testing hopefully covered by insurance.
Your health is an investment. Just like we siphon off earnings into a 401k, we should likewise invest in ourselves so that we may have a quality life, not just a long life. It is well known, what we don’t pay now, we will have to pay later with interest.
So, I invite you to take a deep dive into your health. I dare you to stay young!

Are You Retiring Within the Next 5 Years? What to focus on as the transition approaches
You can prepare for the transition years in advance. In doing so, you may be better equipped to manage anything unexpected that may come your way.
How much monthly income will you need? Unfortunately, there is no “magic” number for everyone to strive for. Instead, examine your monthly expenses, considering any trips, adventures, or pursuits you have in mind for the near term. As a test, you can even try living on your projected monthly income for 2-3 months prior to retiring.
Should you downsize or relocate? Your home is not only a significant asset, it also represents a significant part of your lifestyle. After all, our homes are often a reflection of who we are. It follows that the decision of how much home we want—or need—may vary with each situation; it is not strictly a financial decision. However, if you are considering downsizing or relocating, the financial component of the decision should be considered thoughtfully.
How should your portfolio be constructed? For many retirees, the top priority is generating consistent income. With that in mind, your financial professional can adjust your portfolio with respect to your time horizon, risk tolerance, and goals. For example, some retirees prefer to maintain an amount of risk-averse investments that can provide income during retirement. However, even the most risk-averse investments aren’t immune to risk entirely.
How will you live? Whether you dream of endless Saturdays or dedicating your time to volunteering, remember that retirement is a beginning. Ask yourself what you would like to begin doing now. Think about how to structure your days to pursue that goal, and give it a shot! There’s no better way to prepare for what may come, than to practice in the present.
How will you take care of yourself? If you retire before age 65, Medicare may not be an option. If you’re considering early retirement, check if your group health plan extends certain benefits into retirement.
Even if you retire at 65 or later, Medicare may not be your ideal solution. Consider items Medicare doesn’t traditionally cover, such as extended care or other specialized medical services.
Review your retirement strategy as the transition approaches. Give your financial professional a call today. An adjustment or two before retirement may be all you need for a successful next chapter.

Grande Colonial Hotel
SUPERIOR STAYCATION ON CALIFORNIA’S GOLDEN COAST
Usually when my husband and I travel, we’d use the verb “schlep” to describe the general disarray that accompanies our family of four.
Especially if we’ve got the teens in tow - cruising in and out of hotel rooms, or fiddling with yet another key code for a private rental. Nothing could be further from the verbiage I’d use to attempt a recap of our recent stay at La Jolla’s Grande Colonial Hotel. There’s something so special about individually decorated guest rooms, a calming juxtaposition to your typical grey and orange chain stay. iPhone docking stations for the kids, flat-screen televisions for the adults, premium bedding and designer toiletries to take things up a half a notch.
Accommodation options include luxurious ocean, garden, or village view rooms, sumptuous suites and vacation rental studios - each capturing the essence of the quintessential California coastal lifestyle. But the truly satisfying distinction lies in the luxury amenities scattered about this sun kissed San Diego property.
The only Four Diamond Hotel in the Village of La Jolla, The Grande Colonial Hotel has been welcoming guests to a gorgeous coastal respite for over a century. One of the city's
oldest original seaside hotels, The Grande Colonial has been completely modernized, yet remains faithful to the timeless elegance of its storied past - the sophisticated decor infused
12
with a classic European ambiance and aesthetic. This intimate, iconic property is ideally situated amidst the pristine beaches and regal bluffs of one of Southern California’s most picturesque coastal towns.
From a family staycation standpoint, there is literally something for the everyone right outside the doors - steps from all of the shops, art galleries, restaurants and favored local coffee spots. As far as I'm concerned, anytime of year is the ideal time to visit.
As fledgling foodies, my husband and I are fans of the casually elegant farmto-table dining experience at NINETEN Restaurant & Bar on site. Led by nationally recognized chef, Jason Knibb, the local harvest dictates his "globally inspired, locally sourced" seasonal menu. I love, love crudo and both the hamachi sashimi and the Ahi tuna appetizers were incredibly flavorful (the first with marinated baby shiitake mushrooms and the latter with a Calabri chili and Meyer lemon relish), while kids devoured their signature NINE-TEN angus burgers.
Other popular dishes on the menu at the time of this writing range from pan seared Maine sea scallops enhanced with roasted Matsutake mushroom, the pan-roasted Colorado lamb loin with maitake mushroom and another favorite - pan-seared black cod accompanied by braised leeks, roast-
ed cauliflower mushroom, yuzu and white wine leek broth.
Health club, glittering outdoor pool, and an incredible restaurant and bar serving globally inspired locally sourced cuisine. A culinary excursion through classic California farm-to-table fare, end your day of activity outside (the hotel is just moments from ziplining courses, swimming, sailing, scuba, kayaking and more) with a crisp ocean view. No schlepping allowed.

Have an ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS Valentine’s Day!

Diane Silverstein had never heard of the show “Absolutely Fabulous” when she named her aptly-titled gifts and décor boutique in central Huntington Beach. But the fun-loving, irreverent, blonde, champagne-promoting show does give a glimpse into what makes Absolutely Fabulous such a treasure.
Absolutely Fabulous is not your runof-the-mill, Hallmark-style gift shop; they are as fun and irreverent as the show they share a name with.
The variety and uniqueness of products at Absolutely Fabulous is astounding: hand-made jewelry, Miche Bag purses (the ones where
you just drop the “insides” of your purse into a new shell, rather than having to dump all of your stuff out!), $10 silk scarves, old-school shaving kits for men, a “Daddy’s Tool Bag” that includes diaper changing equipment, and instructional DVD, face mask and other funny items, rare paintings by successful artists, large crystal chandeliers, crystal perfume bottles, stuffed animal baby bottle covers, piggy banks for kids, “dorm survival kits” for new students, wedding party gifts, rare Disney art and collectibles and decorations and decorative items for every holiday.

THE SOMM'S STASH
Purposefully designed to make great wine uncomplicated
By Jody Robinson
One could venture to say with Micah Sampson, what you see is pretty much what you get - passion, excitement, intelligence. But each of those things is about as complex as the best glass of wine - and as a sommelier Micah will tell you there’s so much more to wine than just fermented grape juice.
“There’s history, geology, geography, chemistry, cultural studies," says the San Juan Capistrano resident. "Books and movies have been centered on it. Wars, empires, and country lines have been fought over it.”
So how is it that one of the most uncomplicat ed pleasures in the world is also one of the most complex and variegated? Micah would like to help answer that question - with his own brand of varietals - Somm’s Stash.
A good sommelier is a helper, a guide to finding the best wine for your food and experience. He says "basically, my job is to drink a lot of wine and know everything about it,” which reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from an author when she realized she could major in writing - ‘it was like finding out I could major in eating chocolate.’
“It’s a bummer,” Micah laughs. “But the idea of having a wine brand run by a sommelier was to give people a chance to try and learn about varietals they may not have tried before.”
Uncomplicating the wine game has worked well for the Somm’s Stash since 2020, and unwrapping the mystery of why wine is enjoyable is a task Micah foresees sticking with for a long, long time. Probably longer than the shelf life of that Chardonnay or Petite Sirah sitting in your wine fridge right now.
The best part is, you can go about it any way you want to by booking a private tasting with Micah, and seeing what really goes into the wine you love so much. Bouquet, tannins, aroma, body, finish. Formal, informal
- a guided pairing or a casual dinner party with friends where he'll chat with anyone who has questions.
In a wild turn of events, what seems so uncomplicated stems from an extremely complex background of learning and teaching: the education and wine appreciation behind the distinguished certification. Whatever your reasons for coming to the Somm’s Stash for insight, leave with a personalized understanding of the real world behind wine. After all, what you see is truly what you getyou just have to understand what’s behind that first glimpse.

A Story of Connection & Community LOVE AT THE COVINGTON:
That’s the beauty of life at The Covington, an ECS senior living community in South Orange County’s Aliso Viejo – that two people can find love in their 80s and live a rich, vibrant life together within an outgoing and active community. This is a story of Karen and Jim. But it’s also about the indelible connections residents at The Covington make with one another, and how that makes for a very lovely life.
But, first, let’s back up.
Karen, a former nurse, marriage and family therapist, and religious educator, and her late husband Tom moved into The Covington in 2017. Tom was a family physician who loved to play beach volleyball and travel the world. But his health and memory were in decline and Karen knew it was time to make a move.
“I had heard about The Covington through friends who had convalesced here after surgeries,” says Karen. “Everyone said it was the most fabulous place they had ever been – the care, the food; they couldn’t praise it enough.”
“One day, I received bad news regarding a blood test. The report turned out to be erroneous, but nevertheless, it got me thinking: what if I go first? What’s going to happen to Tom? What’s going to happen to our kids?” So Karen made the decision to leave the ocean views of Laguna Beach for the mountain views of The Covington. It ended up being one of the best decisions of her life, she says.
“When I moved to The Covington, it was such a relief to be there. I was personally falling apart as a caregiver
and Tom needed more care than I could give him on my own,” says Karen. “The nurses, doctors, and Chaplin here did a tremendous amount to help me get back on my feet.”
At first, Karen and Tom lived together in The Covington’s independent living. After six months, however, Tom moved to The Covington’s full-time memory care facility. Sadly, Tom passed away in April 2018.
But there was a silver lining, Karen says. She met other couple friends at The Covington who were going through a similar experience – one spouse in declining health, the other serving as a caregiver. The friends became informal support group for one another and the powerful connection has endured. “We all support one another, we all understand. And we’re all so thankful that we’re here.”
18
When Karen Mauro talks about her partner Jim Espinosa, there’s laughter in her voice. And happiness. And most definitely love. “Jim’s a joy to be with. I just love him,” she says, with her signature North Carolina chuckle.
After Tom’s passing, Karen kept busy. She participated in exercise classes, became president of the resident’s association, and was active in The Covington’s social life.
Two years later, Jim, a former businessman and avid golfer, moved into The Covington. Because of her involvement in the Resident’s Association, Karen knew just about everyone in the community. So, when she noticed the new face at The Covington, she introduced herself. Turns out, Jim’s best friend was one of Tom’s best friends, and they had a lot of the same friends in common.
Soon, Karen and Jim were attending the same exercise classes and Monday Night Football gatherings in The Covington’s lounge. Karen invited Jim to a few events at The Laguna Playhouse, of which Karen is a supporter. After one such event, Jim and Karen went out to dinner and got to know each other better. When they returned to The Covington, Jim gave Karen a little kiss. The rest, they say, is history.
“The two of us thrive on each other,” says Karen. “Jim’s attitude toward life is very positive. He’s one of those people who builds others up.” When asked how he’s doing, Jim’s trademark reply is, “Never been better.”
His optimism and warmth make him a friend to many.
Together, Karen and Jim have traveled all over the States, meeting one another’s families and college friends. They’re a fixture at The Covington gatherings, frequently attend off-site events around Orange County – and they still go to exercise classes together.
There’s even more to love at The Covington
One of the things that initially drew Karen to The Covington was the vibrant lifestyle. Because, although her husband’s health was failing, Karen was active and wanted a lifestyle to match. She found it here.
The programming and amenities at The Covington are designed to keep residents creatively, physically, and socially active. They include residentrun clubs, an art studio, game room, indoor pool, a concert venue, an endless itinerary of exercise classes, a community garden, walking trails throughout the 12-acre campus, and much more.
“You can live life to the fullest and live up to your potential here,” says Karen.
What’s more, complementary transportation means residents can get out on the town whenever they’d like. “A group of us like to go to the theater on Saturday afternoons. The limo bus drops us off right in front
and picks us up as soon as the event is over.”
Dining is a world-class experience at The Covington, featuring meticulously-planned menus and impeccable service. Residents gather at one of The Covington’s three award-winning dining areas: The Grandview gourmet restaurant, The Cove bistro, or Grandview Lounge.
“Living here is like being in a luxury hotel or the highest-end cruise ship you can imagine,” says Karen.
Connections of a lifetime
The Covington, Karen says, is a place of friendships.
“People come from all over the world to live here, from all sorts of fascinating backgrounds.”
Whether they’re bonds made through a shared hobby, through a support group, or even a romantic relationship like Karen and Jim’s, meaningful connections abound at The Covington.
“People love one another here, like we’re a big family,” says Karen. “It’s a good place to come for the rest of your life.”
And that sounds just lovely. The Covington 3 Pursuit Aliso Vieo (949) 209-3829 thecovington.org

South Coast Shutter and Shades
Operating honestly and with integrity has served as the foundation for the continued success of the Laguna Niguel-based South Coast Shutter and Shades for over 32 years. Owners Tom and Donna Schuster launched their own company after realizing that “on our own we would be able to offer quality products in an honest environment to our customers, as well as servicing the products we sell.”
Specializing in custom shutters, blinds (mini, faux, wood, vertical), cellular shades, woven woods, plantation and security shutters and everything in between, Tom and Donna offer free in-home consultations for design as well as measuring, they always include free professional installation and prefer to bring all of the samples to each client’s home to go over the assorted styles and many color options to suit each home’s interior and its homeowner’s unique lifestyle.
“We listen to you and then incorporate your ideas with ours to design your custom shutters, blinds or shades,” says Tom. “Our portfolios and samples are very extensive, so you will be able to envision how your windows are going to look when complete."
Tom and Donna, credit their success to date to the quality of customer service they and their team give their customers, which in turn creates a wonderful repeat and referral business. “Although there may be providers of similar products, there is no one that can match our superior customer service – from showing up on time, making precise measurements and flawless installations - and with a professional ‘can do’ attitude,” says Donna.
Tom adds that “our pricing with unbeatable discounts, sales support and the fact that we offer our customers an in-house design team at no additional charge is the first step in setting us apart from our competition. I am proud to say that we have built a reputation in the business for having the highest quality, best beauty, fit and finish and value available. All of our products come with a lifetime warranty.”
A 5-Star Yelp rated company, South Coast Shutter and Shades boasts scores of glowing testimonials online, including Debora R of Laguna Niguel who writes "Donna and Tom are amazing! Great products, great prices, great service.I've used them twice for two different businesses and I could not be happier. Donna makes suggestions based on what I tell her
my needs are and she has been spot on with her recommendations. Installations by Tom are quick and easy. Highly recommended!"
Another reviewer, Doug W. of Mission Viejo posted that "From the first call, I knew I was dealing with a reputable, experienced, HONEST company. Donna and Tom are absolute PROS and obviously take pride in their work … Their price was very competitive. Also, what they quote is what you pay - keep that in mind when talking to the "other guys" whose price seems to go up and up. All appointments including install were FAST. The installation was flawless. I had a question later that evening about my motorized shades and they called me back IMMEDIATELY. My impression is that I could call them 5 or 10 years from now and they would just as helpful."

How Can I Tell If I Have Skin Cancer?
There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.
FLEMING DERMATOLOGY & AESTHETIC CENTER 23141 Moulton Parkway, Suite 110, Laguna Hills | (949) 916-5956
Dermatology
22
Kristy Fleming, MD, Double Board-Certified in
and Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery
Look especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.
WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW
1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.
2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life.
ACTINIC KERATOSIS
An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.
BASAL CELL CARCINOMA
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.
3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling
A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?
B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin?
C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?
D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.
E - Evolution: Has it changed?
SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.
MELANOMA
Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.
F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others?
4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

Cefali & Cefali, APC
Trusted Accident Attorneys for the Most Serious Injuries
By Jody Robinson
It’s a remarkable feeling when you can find someone to take your side. In relationships, sports: you name it. That one person who believes in you, makes you better, fights alongside you.
Michael Cefali matched with his person (his wife Courtney) long before law school - but their partnership extended through the long years studying for the bar and paid off in an even match that has stacked up in their favor many times over. Graduates of Chapman Law and California Western, respectively, they started the San Juan Capistrano-based Cefali & Cefali, APC in July of 2019 and have been fighting for the little guy ever since. From setting clients up with top-tier doctors and specialists, to negotiating stellar settlements, Cefali & Cefali, APC handles cases from start to finish with client health as their top priority.
Focusing on all aspects of personal injury, the Cefalis are what you might expect in such a ring: passionate, aggressive, and most importantly, honest - all traits that have contributed to the couple having recovered millions of dollars per year on behalf of their clients since opening their firm.
“The insurance companies would like you to think that they get to determine the value of your injuries, your suffering,” says Michael. “We’ll fight for every last penny because we know that you deserve it.” Clients appreciate the work that the Cefalis do. In fact, as of the date of this publication, you won’t find a single negative review of their firm anywhere on the internet.
Client Jamie shares, “I am so grateful for everything that Mike Cefali and his team did for me! Not only was he able to help me get what I was owed in my settlement and then some, but he was so responsive and kind and
it was very apparent that he cared about me and my case! He and his team are so HONEST and FAIR and it was clear from start to finish that he had my best interest in mind! Not only is he a good lawyer but he is a good person which made a world of difference for me. I could not have asked for a better experience with a personal injury attorney! I have already recommended him to all of my friends and I will continue to recommended him to anyone looking for a good lawyer! Thank you so much Cefali and Cefali!”
Another client Carrie echoes Jamie’s sentiment, “My husband and I were rear-ended on the freeway. We felt bad thinking of contacting a lawyer, but after several months of continuous pain and medical treatments, a friend recommended Michael Cefali. From the beginning, he lived up to his core values of integrity, loyalty, and vigorous advocacy. Michael is a dedicated, friendly, and competent attorney who seamlessly represented our interests and ensured the outcome was in our favor. He treated us not like a client, but like family; he

was there any time we needed him. He was empathetic to our situation and worked tirelessly with all parties to represent us. We don’t trust many people, but we trust Michael and his team and would highly recommend him to anyone seeking a professional, effective, and focused attorney.”
With five staff members to back up the stellar work Michael and Courtney produce, the couple remain incredibly hands on, based on a culture of empathy, integrity and advocacy.
“We craft each case personally, build each one for trial, and remain accessible to clients,” says Michael. “Personal injury attorneys get a bad rap when really we’re the good guys. I like to think of our firm as a pirate ship. Nimble, clever, and tenacious in spite of being outspent by the adversary, we pry money from greedy insurance companies and give it to our very deserving clients.”
Giving back is the spirit of the firm, and community work creates a direct link between Michael, Courtney, and their circle in San Juan Capistrano. The couple and their team proudly supports a number of local charitable and community organizations including: The Boys and Girls Club of Capistrano Valley (Courtney is on the Board of Directors), The San Juan Capistrano Friends of the Library (Courtney is also a board member), CREER, the Pacific Marine Mammal Foundation, and Project Coyote. Michael is a member of the San Juan Capistrano Rotary Club and has been recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow.
The Cefali team’s ethics, constant communication (every client is given Michael’s personal cell phone for easy accessibility), commitment to their clients and involvement in the community keeps everyone growing stronger and healthier together. Remarkable isn’t it, that feeling when someone takes your side?

Painting for Patriotism: Keeping the Prado Dam Mural Alive
By Jody Robinson
There’s a certain mystique that comes alongside the signs which state “National Register of Historic Places.” Even more so, the places which are waiting to be named.
Occasionally in disrepair, like the Prado Dam Mural in Corona, California, these places hold significance to a great many, yet have often yet to be recognized for their cultural and historic significance. Status doesn’t matter to Jeff McCabe, owner of One Way Painting, based in Orange, California. Luckily enough, the pursuit of a singular passion has been enough to keep Jeff pushing for a complete repair and repaint of the Prado Dam.
The journey began in 2012, when Jeff passed by the mural on the 91 freeway, but unlike over 300,000 other drivers that see it on their daily commute, Jeff took notice of the state it was in.
“I wanted to repaint the dam after seeing it fall into disrepair,” he says. “It was being tagged. As a sign of our patriotism, it felt like people were disrespecting our flag and country.”
Jeff, like many others, was born in 1976. A Bicentennial Baby as his mom called him, the mural has always held a special place in his heart. The mural was originally painted the year he
was born, by the students of Corona High School. Part of a school project and contest, Ron and Perry brought 30 of their friends along and over two weeks, painted the mural.
Celebrating America’s 200 years of freedom, the unveiling of the mural was part of the Bicentennial celebrations that took place all over the States. “Ten years in the making, with close to 60,000 events planned,” reporter Dave Mecham said “it was like the 4th of July on steroids, celebrated throughout the entire year.”
After years of attempted connections, Jeff finally made headway with the Army Corp of Engineers. And not too soon. By chance his brother Jim “saw online that the Corp was settling up to strip the mural, and that there was a group of the original artists, now in their 60’s, who were trying to save it.”
Joining forces, Jeff, Jim, and the former Corona High students formed the Bicentennial Freedom Mural Conservancy, whose sole purpose is to repaint the mural and preserve it indefinitely, for future generations to
enjoy. Key major contributors include Dunn-Edwards, Rust-Oleam and Orange County-based Veteran Air.
“Upon completion of the repainting of the dam, there will be an unveiling, dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony.” A labor of love, like the first time around, the mural is still a symbol of American resiliency, hard work, and dedication. Just ask the moms who fed the original 30 students, or each individual private donation to cover labor and materials, insurance, equipment, worker’s compensation, and insurance. Mystique or no, the Prado Dam mural is here to stay.

It’s all about dem BONES!
By Pamela Mangen MSN, MBA, RN, PHN, PCCN-CMC, LSSGB
There’s a common misconception that a high-protein diet is bad for bone health but nothing could be further from the truth! In fact, years of research show that getting plenty of protein is crucial for bone density – provided you get enough of a key mineral.
Studies show that getting the right amount of protein in your diet improves your bone health. It lowers your chance of osteoporosis (bone loss) by helping you hold on to your bone density, and it helps prevent breaks as you age, too.
Proteins form the foundation of every living thing! But what proteins, exactly? Under a microscope, proteins are made out of long chains of amino acids linked together as links or blocks. There are 20 amino acids needed for metabolism and human growth found in food or supplements. The best sources of amino acids are found in animal proteins such as beef and in poultry. Eggs are a good source of lean protein. And even though there is cholesterol in the yolk, it is not as likely to raise your cholesterol level as foods that contain saturated fats and trans fats do.
Animal proteins are the most easily absorbed and used by your body. Foods that contain all nine essential amino acids are called complete proteins.
When it comes to your bones, protein is especially important. Protein makes up roughly one-third of your bones mass (the amount of protein your bones contain) and half of your bone volume (the amount of space protein takes up). Women need at least 50 grams of protein a day -- men about 60 grams per day. With a high-protein diet, it can be much more than that. This extra protein can come from beans, meat, nuts, grains, eggs, seafood, cheese or vegetarian sources like soy. These diets often restrict carbs like cereals, grains, fruits, and possibly vegetables. When it comes to Beans, One and a quarter cup of beans has about as much protein as 3 ounces of broiled steak. Along with protein, the fiber in beans helps you feel full longer and also helps lower your LDL (“bad”) cholesterol.
Be choosy. The best high-protein plans focus on lean proteins and include some carbs. Avoid huge helpings of fatty meats and make sure to include vegetables.
Fish is loaded with protein and almost always low in fat. Even the fish that have more fat, such as salmon and tuna, are good choices. Those fish generally have omega-3 fatty acids, which are good for your heart. Most people don’t get enough omega-3s. Milk, cheese, and yogurt give you protein and calcium for strong bones and a healthy heart. Low-fat, nonfat, or reduced-fat dairy products can help you keep calorie counts down.
The protein in your bones is continuously broken down and built back up, as part of your bone remodeling process. Unfortunately, the protein that’s broken down isn’t reabsorbed and reused. That’s why you need a daily supply of protein to maintain your bone density.

Now we realize that for the last 70 years, most of the westernized world has been told red meat is bad. Interestingly, our extracellular bone matrix is made primarily of collagen. Collagen is a protein. Our matrix is like a flexible framework for bone. Calcium hardens this framework and adds strength to it. Together they are 2 components of bone. With 28 different types of collagen, type 1 is the most abundant form found in bones. Our body doesn’t absorb collagen molecules, but rather they are broken down into amino acids. The bottom line is: Don’t shy away from animal protein. Your bones will love you for it!

Renew Ketamine Infusion Therapy
By Jody Robinson
The first time I heard of Ketamine was a few years ago from a friend in nursing school. Then again recently from another friend whose mother suffers from fibromyalgia as she began researching therapies to relieve chronic pain. A growing number of studies have found that Ketamine can be effective for people with a myriad of chronic pain and mental health conditions, including treatment-resistant depression, anxiety and PTSD.
Based in San Juan Capistrano, Renew Ketamine Infusion is the brainchild of Tanya Dall, MD and Justin Yanuck, MD –board certified physicians who became colleagues and friends in their emergency medicine residency training at UCI Medical Center. Both have extensive experience utilizing Ketamine for various medical indications and treating complex pain disorders. Dr. Dall studied physiology at the University of Arizona, and went on to obtain her medical degree from Georgetown University. Dr. Yanuck received his medical degree from UCI and then completed a Pain Medicine Fellowship at Harvard Mass General Hospital.
Ketamine was originally FDA approved in 1970 as a safe way to anesthetize patients. However, as is common in medicine, often one medicine can have multiple uses and over the last 20 years research has been building showing Ketamine’s safety and efficacy for a range of psychological disorders. Dr. Yanuck and Dr. Dall use Ketamine nearly every day in the emergency room for things like procedural sedation, and treatment of acute pain. A few years ago, they had a conversation about how frustrated they were with the current framework for how most mental health and chronic pain conditions were treated, and that for many patients, they not only get little to no relief from these traditional medications, but often suffer undesirable side-effects. That night, some new articles on the efficacy of Ketamine came up in conversation, and the rest is history. Renew Ketamine Infusion was founded shortly thereafter.
The basis of Renew is to treat each patient as a unique individual, and to take a holistic approach to the entire Ketamine experience. “We don’t believe in a model where everyone receives the exact same dose, or the same dose at each infusion. Everyone responds differently and we treat you like the
unique person you are,” says Dr. Dall. The infusions don’t happen in a vacuum: each session has a specially-trained MD (Dr. Dall or Dr. Yanuck) to oversee it, which allows for in-the-moment adjustments as needed, and is preceded and followed by integrative psychotherapy consultations with a licensed clinical psychotherapist specially trained in Ketamine assisted psychotherapy. Furthermore, each infusion takes place at their clinic which places an emphasis on patient privacy and comfort. Their clinic is far from the typical sterile medical office and has more of a spa-like atmosphere. The clinic opened last year, and the program is built on years of clinical experience and research.
Renew treats depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, addiction, suicidality, chronic pain and fibromyalgia. All of which have something in common: stress. When someone is in a chronic stress state, there is a reduction in the number, function, and quality of brain connections. Ketamine has been shown to increase the function and quality of connections. These connections allow neural pathways to open back up, producing proteins that increase the number of synapses in the brain. These synapses lead to a rapid resolution of

30
symptoms – if your mind-body connection is restored in a big way, you’ll find relief.
Dr. Dall is quick to add that while Ketamine is not a drug that will solve all psychiatric ailments, “we believe Ketamine combined with psychotherapy gives patients - especially those who have not responded to previous therapies - the best chance of relieving one’s symptoms so they can live a life free of the burdens of mental and physical anguish.”
Patient Claire says she had been suffering from depression for years and despite trying multiple medications and years of therapy, she “couldn’t get out from under the weight of depression.”
“To be honest, I was skeptical about Ketamine clinics, I felt like if this worked so well, everyone would be doing it,” she says. “After my first session, I was a believer. I’m now two months out from my last injection, and while I would say I still have some baseline depression, I feel 95% better. Words cannot truly describe what the experience through the infusions taught me and how much better my quality of life is now. I’m so grateful for the entire staff at Renew Ketamine Infusion for giving me my life back.”
Dr. Deepak Chopra was interviewed recently, and stated that as a physician, he was taught to never use the word ‘healing.’ You could treat a patient or their symptoms, but you might not heal them. He disagrees, and so do Drs Dall and Yanuck. “Ketamine takes advantage of the idea that our brains are moldable: even when our brains have been damaged, we have the capacity to heal from within. Ketamine kickstarts this healing process.”
I don’t believe in a miracle drug. I don’t think that the medication we have on the market today is capable of solving all our psychiatric ailments. But I am beginning to understand that repairing the mind-body connection might give patients, like my friend’s mother, a chance to feel relief from years of chronic pain. Especially in cases where previous or traditional treatments have fallen short.
In Drs Dall and Yanuck’s experience, and based on clinical studies, about 70-80% of people will have significant relief of their symptoms. Long-lasting relief. This is a positively staggering response rate given the patient population are those who have tried and failed multiple other therapies. They set out to open a space that allowed for the optimal delivery of this powerful medication, and have succeeded in creating a program that treats patients “not as objects that are broken, but people that have the capacity to heal from within.
It’s A Milestone for Sure…
Most commonly now you apply for Medicare on the Social Security website (or you can call (800) 772-1213 to make a phone appointment to apply). I’m told by my clients that are new to Medicare that they feel so fortunate to have me “hold their hand” and help them through the process. I will “hold your hand” too if you want my assistance as you face this big milestone of decisions.
Much of my consultation time is going through the appropriate steps of someone just getting their Medicare active. This really has nothing to do with my profession because I’m an insurance broker, not a government employee. But this seems to be the most daunting step for most that I meet with.
The government is trying to make it an easier process. If you have a computer you can enroll in Medicare online by going to Medicare. gov. They are continually trying to make that website more user friendly. Once you’re on the website just click on “Get Started with Medicare” in the middle of the landing page of the website. Follow the prompts pertinent to you and you’ll be done in no time!
You’ll want to start this process 3 months before your birthday month to make sure you’re good to go on the first day of the month that you turn 65 (unless you’re born on the 1 st , then you get to go on Medicare one month early).

Medicare alone is not enough, and that’s where I come in to help you understand your Medicare options. Medicare Advantage plans, Medicare Supplement (Medi- gap) plans and Medicare Drug plans are complex and the fact that you can have my knowledge (at no cost to you) to help you decide the right choice for you at this milestone in your life will give you peace of mind. Well, that’s what my clients tell me at least.

Acoustic guitarist and two-time Grammy award nominee Leo Kottke flourished during his tenure with Capitol Records, as albums like 1972’s “Greenhouse” and 1973’s live “My Feet Are Smiling” and “Ice Water” found him branching out with guest musicians and honing his guitar technique.

BODEANS
With countless tunes you know from the first note, rip-roaring gigs you can count on, and a whole lot of energy you’ll take home with you, BoDeans continue to contribute to the American songbook as a tried-and-true institution. Founded and led by original frontman, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Kurt Neumann, the band’s catalog consists of generational anthems such as “Good Things,” You Don’t Get Much,” “Idaho,” and “Closer To Free,” just to name a few.

ACE FREHLEY
Classic rock hits from the original KISS guitarist and R&R Hall of Fame inductee. The success of Ace Frehley’s solo career, as both a recording artist and performer, has easily outpaced his former KISS band mates. His 2014 release Space Invader was the only post KISS solo album to crack the Top 10 on Billboard’s Top 200 albums chart, and his acclaimed 2011 autobiography No Regrets went on to become a New York Times best-seller.

More than just a “tribute” to Lynyrd Skynyrd a tribute to the man that defined it.
Artimus Pyle has said ” If it wasn’t for Ronnie, no one would know my name.” Since his departure from Skynyrd in 1991 , Artimus Pyle’s career has led him down an amazing path of solo records and projects culminating into one the finest tributes to southern rock royalty. The Artimus Pyle Band is a high energy, true to the music, and true to the era rock group.

Bayside Restaurant Experience Dining as Art
By Jody Robinson
An iconic eatery nestled at the edge of Newport Harbor, Bayside Restaurant showcases spectacular views - inside and out with the panoramic water views while dining al fresco on the wrap-around patio and a rotating modern art exhibit of carefully selected works on display indoors.
To further enhance the ambiance in this elegant establishment, Bayside features nightly live entertainment of soulful jazz amidst its lavish surroundings.
That's merely the starting point. We haven't even mentioned the extensive menu of mouthwatering New American cuisine. Inventive starters include mild smoked Scottish salmon with lemon-chive blini, capers, dill and Bermuda onion and the Maryland style crab cake crafted from flavorful Blue Crab meat with Old Bay
remoulade sauce atop a soft slaw with white balsamic.
I personally steer toward seafood on any menu and am a particular fan of seared scallops. Bayside more than delivered with its delicious rendition of seared Wild Diver scallops accompanied by a potato puree, asparagus and roasted Marcona almond romesco. Other specialties include a beautiful seafood paella, pan seared sea bass and pan seared sesame crusted Ahi tuna.
The resident meat lover in our family, my husband went right for the 8 oz. center cut filet mignon that he claims was cooked to perfection and super flavorful.
The service here was superb - attentive yet unobtrusive. An indulgent event ideal for any special occasion or date night outing.
Diners at the next table shared that they are regulars at Bayside's "famous" Sunday Champagne brunch so we'll definitely have to be back to experience the variety of omelettes, breakfast hash made from slow cooked brisket, smoked salmon Benedict or the "cast iron" seared salmon.

WHY WORK WITH AN Interior Designer?
Southern California is not just a location in which we reside, but a lifestyle that we live.
Longtime Orange County resident and owner of the Laguna Niguel-based Bronwyn Gorman - Decorating Den Interiors, Bronwyn embraces the unique SoCal lifestyle, and the indoor- outdoor spaces that reflect it.
“We enjoy helping our clients create the perfect look for them and their lifestyle,” says Bronwyn. “Whether it’s one room or one window that you’re interested in redecorating, we’d like to help you do it right the first time! If you’re like many of the clients we work with, you want a beautifully custom designed look, but truly don’t know how to make that vision a reality. The process of decorating a home can feel very overwhelming and quite often reaches the point of frustration that results in projects
remaining unfinished or completed with disappointing results.”
You might not be sure of “what” goes “where” – or with “what.” Or, perhaps you might want to begin your design project by building on what you already have, rather than throwing everything out and starting from scratch, but are unsure of how to begin. You might even fear that if you call a professional decorator, your home will end up featuring that decorator’s taste – not yours. And last, but certainly not least, you might not be sure you can afford the services of a professional decorator.
Well fear not! Let the professional, knowledgeable and friendly decorators at Bronwyn Gorman - Decorating Den Interiors put your decorat-
ing concerns to rest! From design concept to completion, they’ll help save you valuable time and money by guiding your decision making process through a myriad of functional and decorative ideas. Bronwyn and her team stand behind their commitment to YOU that they will be with you every step of the way.
The list of benefits available to you when you choose to work with a professional decorator goes on and on. The bottom line, however, is that a professionally trained interior decorator can not only make your ideas work better, but they know how to make your decorating dreams a reality! Maybe it’s time to consider calling in the professionals!

Graceful Aging with San Clemente Village
By Jody Robinson
I think most folks grew up with the saying “it takes a village.” Though no one is entirely certain where the adage originated, many posit that it was noted in reference to either African communities or Indigenous ones. Wherever the origin, (and whatever age the adage refers to) the idea lives on cross culturally today.
One of the most incredible examples emerged out of the Boston area in the early 2000’s, when an online retirement service organization let its residents, near and far, come together to age gracefully surrounded by friends.
Within the last two decades, the model has expanded westward, catching the attention of Jessica Reiter-Flax, now Executive Director of San Clemente Village in South Orange County.
The Village concept which started in San Clemente in 2014 as a hope that “neighbors would help neighbors” evolved to include full services two years later. The 100% volunteer driven membership organization
provides services for local seniors ranging from transportation to appointments, grocery shopping, social outings to happy hours and help around the house. The average volunteer is 65 years young - looking for ways to give back.
“Sometimes they just have some extra time on their hands now that they’re retired themselves - most just want a really rewarding volunteer experience," says Jessica. "The majority of our volunteers forge lasting friendships with our members.”
Things like Sunday brunch or a movie matinee may not seem like they make a huge difference in the overall cognitive, physical, or psychological suc-
cess rates of older adults (aged 87, on average). But more than 70% of seniors want to remain in their homes as they age “and the Village helps them do just that. They can socialize easily, which reduces isolation, maintaining a state of continuous physical and mental well-being."
“We hope to continue our geographic reach to include more South County cities in coming years,” says Jessica. “Part of the Village Movement California, San Clemente Village is the only full-service not-for-profit service Village in Orange County. There are more than 40 such organizations throughout the state - helping older adults live their best lives, and our volunteers are always ready to welcome new members into the fold.”
After all, at this point with a full roster of wellness initiatives, grocery store, technology assistance and even fall risk reduction preparedness, it really does take a village.

When I was younger, my Mom loved to read me the book “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie.” The plot essentially revolves around an ever-growing list of to-do’s that had to be accomplished, all set into motion by the simple act of giving a mouse a cookie. This tale came back to me recently when I purchased a new television at Best Buy.
What was a simple shopping trip ended up being an adult’s version of that circular tale. If you give a grownup a television, they’ll have to measure their wall. When they measure the wall, they’ll realize they may actually have room for a bigger television. When they buy the bigger television, they’ll find out they have no idea how to
mount it to the wall. When they start mounting it to the wall, they’ll see that the power outlets are all in the wrong places. When they realize the outlets need to be moved, they’ll call an electrician. (This could go on forever.)
Luckily for clients who have been on the receiving end of ReelTime’s patient, intelligent, and personalized
service, the rabbit hole of home automation doesn’t have to swallow you entirely. With the help of their independent certified Control4 dealer, it’s easy to update your home without upending your entire life. After all, the true luxury of an integrated entertainment system is really dependent on its ability to deliver seamless entertainment. By placing every
50
control at your fingertips, the team at ReelTime helps homeowners manage everything from how brightly lit your family room is, to your streaming devices - all with a single remote. And best yet? You can control your whole home from the comfort of your couch- even seeing who is at the front door, without ever leaving your seat. Simple, clean, and uncluttered.
And on the home entertainment front … when you started planning for your ultimate home theater set-up and sound system, could you find the right media cabinetry for your particular space – cabinetry that wouldn’t catch on fire from the heat of the equipment, or that would simply look good in the room? Did you understand half of what the televisions, receivers and other devices could do, and did you have anyone to hold your hand to make sure you weren’t overspending for what you wanted?
Big box retailers, the professed champions of value, are happy to sell you any home theater and sound equipment you think you might like, and send you off to figure it out at home. That’s what they do. And that’s all they do.
If you want the home theater system that you envision, seek the services of Skip Myers and his team of experienced professionals at ReelTime to take you from start to finish for the home theater or sound system of your dreams.
“Usually there is a part of the job that you find you just can’t do by
yourself,” says Skip, who has overseen the design and installation of thousands of home theater and sound systems over the course of 40-plus years in the business. “You get your brand new television home, you’re so excited, then you realize you need to move an outlet or none of the cabinets you can find will fit your space. We’re here to make sure you get the equipment that will give you what you want and the system that will work with that equipment, without leaving you to fend for yourself.”
Skip opened the doors at ReelTime in 1983. Today, the technicians and designers that Skip assigns to clients are all ReelTime employees, knowledgeable in all home theater and sound technologies. First, they work closely with you to determine what you’re looking for. Then they custom design every aspect of the project, from wiring to custom-built cabinets, frames, or built-in wall designs. Finally, licensed, in-house contractors install your entertainment system with care and precision.
There are a couple of things that people may not think about when they embark upon the road to their own home entertainment system.
“You need to think about your home theater goals,” says Skip. “You don’t have to do everything at once – you can do it bit by bit – but if you know where you’re going, you’ll save money and when it’s all said and done, you’ll have exactly what you want and what you will actually use. We’re here to help you determine your goals.”
Skip is also an advocate for getting what you’ll use, which is part of the design and planning process.
“You can buy everything you want to, but if you can’t operate it, what’s the point?” he says. “There’s the television, DVD and Blue-ray; there’s the receiver, there’s Apple TV… it’s all great, but how do you get them to work together? We’re big advocates of the universal remote. Not everyone knows how to get the most out of their systems with one powerful remote – they’re not expensive, but the best ones are computer-based. We’ll set that up for you so you’re getting the most out of your custom system.”
It’s easy to assume that personal service is expensive, but a conversation with Skip and the experts at ReelTime is free. Ultimately, in planning your purchases for the right outcome, you’re likely to save money while avoiding chilling setbacks. The only chilling you want to be doing is in front of your fantasy home theater system.

Performance & Professionalism: Dr. Slide-Door
By Jody Robinson
It’s a new year. I, along with everyone I know, made resolutions: mostly hoping that this year would be better than the last, but some that genuinely reflected an optimistic mindset. Said mindset led my husband and I to craft one that hadn't topped our previous lists: fix broken things.
Like most everyone we know, our family has spent considerably more time at home these past months - and knocking around the house all day, we've made a priority
of a dizzying array of home improvement projects - both indoors and out - that we'd previously deferred. Turns out, we're not alone.
A common refrain among our friend group? Countless home appliances to be replaced. Garden and landscaping projects to embark on. And a rather surprising number of sliding glass doors in need of repair in our collective Southern California homes.
Enter Shy Hadan. Known as Dr. SlideDoor, Shy's father was in the business of selling sliding doors, but when he saw that there was no one to fix them,
he stepped in with a solution. “Usually people think they just have to be replaced, but that isn’t the case! We have a ton of experience with all kinds of doors, no matter how old, what material, or what brand.”
If hauling open your sliding door requires Herculean strength, it’s likely you’re experiencing rollers with dirt and dust buildup so they don’t roll the way they used to. Over the years, it’s common for the rollers to wear to the point that you may actually be dragging the entire weight of the sliding door across the track, which causes even more damage and drag every time you do it.
Whether your door is modern or ancient, made of aluminum, vinyl or wood … all you have to do to “remedy your rolling troubles” is schedule a free inspection. A tech will come out to see if the components can be fixed or replaced, and then...fix it. With over 25 years of industry experience, Dr. Slide-Door is the number one chosen sliding glass door repair service in Southern California. What sets them apart? Each member of Dr. Slide Door’s team arrives with everything you’ll need on site.
“Your sliding door professional will replace the parts right down to the rollers, leaving your door feeling weightless and good as new. You’ll be amazed at how easily your door slides open and closed.”
With parts made in Germany, you can be assured that your “new” door could last another 20 years: plenty of time to tackle out the rest of your resolutions.

BUBBLES MOBILE AUTO DETAIL
By Jody Robinson
There is a specific type of business person I particularly appreciate when utilizing his or her services. One who is detail oriented.
yan “Bubbles” Jara is just such a professional. Having been in mobile auto detail business serving Orange County for over 25 years, he must be, and especially since his specialty is restoration and paint correction on classic cars. Bubbles was the plan since the beginning, it seems.
“My uncles restore classic vehicles so I grew up in the industry," he says. "It only made sense to one day have a business of my own bringing cars back to their original glory.”
But what happens before a car becomes a classic? Those of us that pride ourselves on being detail oriented would perhaps note that a regular car wash and wax are in order. Ryan takes it one step further.
you, and handles all of the heavy lifting - from upholstery cleaning to paint protection.
Jara's services include hand wash and wax, interior and exterior detailing, headlight restoration, steam cleaning, ceramic coating, engine bay wash and ... something my minivan could certainly use ... pet hair removal. You name the vehicle, Bubbles will ensure it is looking its finest.
“Having a passion for the cars I’m servicing takes almost no effort - I know I love this work," he says. "The commitment to excellence and knowledge of the chemical industry gives your car its million-dollar shine.”
RV’s, motorcycles, daily drivers, trucks, boats and classic cars. The convenience is unmatched and the product? Well, it’s detailed. And you know I love nothing better.

Mission Viejo Wigs:
Where Customers are “Family”
by Jody robinson
Mission Viejo Wigs is truly a family business. Not in the traditional sense, where its owners and operators share the same genes. But rather in such a way that every person who has walked through Owner Betty Darroch’s doors in the 30+ years she has been in operation immediately felt like a member of Darroch’s extended family.
As a professional hair and wig stylist since 1962, Betty began her career at CBS where her résumé reads like a celebrity screenplay starring the coifs of a veritable “who’s who” of Hollywood: Ann Margaret, Carol Lawrence, the Midnight Specials and the Sonny & Cher Show. She went on to work for the Hallelujah Hollywood Show at the MGM Hotel in Las Vegas.
But it wasn’t until she opened her own business in Mission Viejo that she felt as though she were “truly doing God’s work.”
Her clients today include people who are experiencing hair loss due to chemotherapy treatment, alopecia or other medical conditions. Betty specializes in wigs, hairpieces and toupees for women, men and children and carries only the highest quality brands. Each wig or hairpiece is custom fit to the client for the most natural look and feel – no one will know you’re wearing a wig unless you tell them.
“Hair loss, whether it is the result of illness, the aging process or heredity, can be a traumatic and emotionally draining experience,” says Betty. “We work with people on a daily basis who are facing the issue of hair loss for the first time. Our goal is to help you find the solution that works best for you and do so in a caring way that makes you realize that you are not alone.”
There are wonderful testimonials from longtime customers on her web site (missionviejowigs. com), but for me, the best testament to Betty’s genuine, caring nature came from a source closer to home.
When my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer six years ago, there were so many aspects of what she was facing - including the side effects associated wit chemotherapy treatment – that were out of our control. But my mother’s appearance was something she felt she could dictate. We knew she would lose her hair, but she was determined not to “look like a sick person.”
From the moment my mother met Betty, she knew she had found the right place and more importantly, the right person to help her. Betty shared so many stories of survival – of longtime customers and friends who fought a similar battle and won. Her warm embrace and inspired hope and help steel her resolve to maintain a positive, fighting attitude when she was diagnosed with lung cancer.
The wig Betty selected was the perfect color and style for my mother’s face (and head) shape. The wig was so natural looking that my mother
received many compliments on her “new do” and no one was the wiser.
It’s been over nine years since my mother completed treatment and is now leading a cancer-free life. Although her own hair has long since grown back, she still often prefers to wear Betty’s wigs on “bad hair days.”
Thank you Betty!

The Benefits of Diabetic Socks
By Livia De Los Rios
The primary purpose of diabetic socks is to keep your feet dry, decrease your risk for foot injury and avoid preventing or slowing blood circulation. The difference between diabetic socks and regular cotton socks is that they are usually are made of materials that wick away moisture, are fitted, padded and are non-binding.
Because people with diabetes are at higher risk of foot injuries and infection due to damage to their circulatory and nervous
systems caused by high blood sugar levels, they would benefit from wearing diabetic socks.
Nerve damage, or neuropathy, decreases sensation and increases risk of injury, particularly on the bottom of the feet and can also cause people with diabetes to be unaware of an injury and delay treatment. Circulatory problems also make it harder for wounds to heal.
For these reasons and more, proper foot care is critically important for people with diabetes and diabetic socks are designed with these specific issues in mind.
CARE TIPS
• Look at and touch your feet everyday
• Keep your feet clean and dry
• Cut or file toenails with the shape of the toe, smoothing all sharp edges
• Moisturize dry skin with a lotion
• Avoid injury to the feet. Have corns, calluses or ingrown toenails treated by a professional
• Wear well-fitting, soft leather or fabric shoes
• Check shoes daily for cracks, pebbles, or other things that might damage your feet
• Get your blood glucose under control
• Wear well-fitting socks, without a thick toe seam, made of material that wicks moisture away from skin
Be aware of:
• Changes in skin color or temperature
• Swelling in the foot or ankle
• Pain in the legs
• Open sores on the feet that are slow to heal
• Ingrown toenails or toenails infected with fungus
• Corns/calluses/ bunions
• Dry cracks in the skin, especially around the heel
If you have a foot problem that is slow to go away or continues to get worse, contact a healthcare professional immediately.

Orange Hill Restaurant
PRIME STEAKS, PRIMO VIEWS AND AN UNPARALLELED WEEKEND BRUNCH
By Jody Robinson
The last time I visited Orange Hill Restaurant was pre-pandemic for a friend’s bon voyage party. Though I am certain that the menu has changed here and there since that time, the quality of its culinary offerings, absolutely breathtaking views and stellar service have not changed one iota.
Perched on the hills of Orange County, the restaurant offers panoramic views of Catalina Island, downtown Los Angeles, Disneyland’s nightly pyrotechnic extravaganza and the gorgeous SoCal coastline. Pair the views with a glass of wine from the award-winning house list, or partake in a hand-crafted cocktail.
A contemporary California steakhouse, Orange Hill features aged butcher-cut steaks (including a new menu item - the Steak Progressive showcasing four different cuts of premium beef) and the freshest of seafood (think miso-marinated Chilean sea bass, coconut shrimp and lobster and shrimp risotto).
If you’re searching for a wonderful weekend brunch, this is where Orange Hill truly shines. Start out with a bottomless mimosa mixed and
matched with your choice of unique flavor pairings - dragonfruit and watermelon, fresh cucumber mint, lavender-activated charcoal lemonade or pineapple jalapeno.
smoked bacon while the Hangover Hash is made from mouthwatering braised prime rib accompanied by roasted potatoes, poached egg and signature Hollandaise.
Love bennys? Orange Hill’s serves up several delicious signature benedicts - Classic, Crab Cake, Smoked Salmon and a trio of beef specialties: the Cape Grim Filet, Prime Zabuton and Dry-Aged Ribeye - all accompanied by Hollandaise, blistered tomatoes and my personal favorite ... chimichurri (an incredibly flavorful traditional Argentine sauce made of finely chopped parsley, minced garlic and olive oil that I can literally consume by the spoonful).
Raw bar offerings include chilled oysters on the half shell, salmon tartare (miso soy, citrus edamame smash, pickled Fresno peppers), Alaskan king crab legs and citrus poached shrimp cocktail.
A la carte entrees range from traditional favorites like fluffy thick-cut brioche French toast topped with cognac roasted golden apples and three-egg omelets. The “Brunchy Smash Burger” arrives as a cookedto-your-liking double patty with Tabasco aioli, fried egg and applewood
Whether you’re celebrating with friends, gathering with family or out for a romantic date night - come to relax, refresh, or reimagine - the possibilities here are lined up like the sights from the patio. All you have to do is drive up the Hill.
