8 Mistakes That Can Upend Your Retirement

Pursuing

1. No Strategy: Yes, the biggest mistake is having no strategy at all. Without a strategy, you may have no goals, leaving you no way of knowing how you’ll get there—and if you’ve even arrived. Creating a strategy may increase your potential for success, both before and after retirement.

2. Frequent Trading: Chasing “hot” investments often leads to despair. Create an asset allocation strategy that is properly diversified to reflect your objectives, risk tolerance, and time horizon; then make adjustments based on changes in your personal situation, not due to market ups and downs.¹

3. Not Maximizing Tax-Deferred Savings: Workers have tax-advantaged ways to save for retirement. Not participating in your employer’s 401(k) may be a mistake, especially when you’re passing up free money in the form of employer-matching contributions.²

4. Prioritizing College Funding over Retirement: Your kids’ college education is important, but you may not want to sacrifice your retirement for it. Remember, you can get loans and grants for college, but you can’t for your retirement.

5. Overlooking Healthcare Costs: Extended care may be an expense that can undermine your financial strategy for retirement if you don’t prepare for it.

6. Not Adjusting Your Investment Approach Well Before Retirement: The last thing your retirement portfolio can afford is a sharp fall in stock prices and a sustained bear market at the moment you’re ready to stop working. Consider adjusting your asset allocation in advance of tapping your savings so you’re not selling stocks when prices are depressed.³

7. Retiring with Too Much Debt: If too much debt is bad when you’re making money, it can be deadly when you’re living in retirement. Consider managing or reducing your debt level before you retire.

8. It’s Not Only About Money: Above all, a rewarding retirement requires good health, so maintain a healthy diet, exercise regularly, stay socially involved, and remain intellectually active.

Luminance Recovery Center RESTORING HOPE, EMPOWERING CHANGE

There is a soft moment, in the early early morning, when the curtain of darkness begins to liftthe world spinning over 1,000 miles an hour - and the first glow of dawn appears on the horizon.

Agreat many poets and romantics have drawn inspiration from this moment over the years, finding it to be the sign of a glorious new beginning. Percy Bysshe Shelley called it “the mask/ Of darkness fall(ing) from the Earth.” Scientists call it luminance. The moment when an object exists in apparent brightness. When darkness turns to dusk, and dusk falls away before the intensity of light.

In 2015, a bright light appeared on the horizon in South Orange County. The standard-bearer for addiction, trauma, and PTSD recovery, Luminance has taken on the task of providing love and compassionate care to those in recovery - with the intention of transforming each and every life they touch. Starting from the ground floor, the team began with just 6 beds. To date, they’ve grown to 12 detox beds, and 50 residential inpatient treatment beds throughout South Orange County and Malibu. Unlike most recovery programs however, Luminance isn’t just offering tough love, or attacking symptoms without paying attention to the root cause of addiction. Priding itself on the unique commitment to quality care through five core values, the professionals at Luminance are driven by compassion, integrity, collaboration, innovation and excellence.

“Luminance offers 30, 60 and 90 day programs and is a dual diagnosis treatment center meaning we are able

to address secondary psychiatric issues that are typically related to or cause the addiction,” says Carla DiCandia, MPA, Director, Clinical Outreach. "We treat alcohol and drug addiction, with an emphasis on underlying trauma identification and treatment. Our clinician to client ratio is 1:7 which means clients see their therapist multiple times per week in addition to their group therapies, exercise programs, and experiential therapy. Experiential therapy is a form of therapy that encourages clients to identify and address hidden or subconscious issues through experiences such as role-playing, guided imagery, the use of props, and a range of other activities."

Status quo is not an acceptable level of operation at Luminance. So what is the status quo for addiction in America? How dark is true dark? 40 million Americans, according to a Columbia University study, “meet the clinical criteria for addiction involving nicotine, alcohol, or other drugs.” Over 38,000 people overdosed, and died, in the U.S. in 2010: greater, the U.S. News reports, “than the deaths attributed to motor vehicle accidents, homicides and suicides.” Family dysfunction, financial struggle, legal problems, domestic violence, child abuse, unplanned pregnancies and car accidents are often simple and tragic side effects of the problem of addiction. The impossibly unfortunate consequence of addiction however, is most often manifested in neglect. Only one in ten people report receiving treatment for alcohol and/or drug addiction.

Set that down next to a full seventy percent of patients with high blood pressure or even diabetes who receive treatment.

A consistently superior set of results for those in recovery, their families, and the team at the center is top priority, and non-negotiable. Be it as simple as improving the daily menu with the Chef, or better managing medications, Luminance is removing the veil of dusky complacency and replacing it with transformative care. Trauma-focused treatment modalities at Luminance include evidencebased therapies like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, along with EMDR- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.

“Eye Movement Desensitiztion and Reprocessing (EDMR) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences,” says DiCandia. "Many individuals struggling with addiction have suffered significantly traumatic events in their early lifetimes. It is widely assumed that severe emotional pain requires a long time to heal. EMDR therapy shows that the mind can, in fact, heal from psychological trauma much as the body recovers from physical trauma. Using the detailed protocols and procedures learned in EMDR therapy training sessions, clinicians help clients activate their natural healing processes and overcome some of the contributors to their addiction disorder."

Essential to such a full recovery is the settling of an enormous question within oneself: the question of guilt.

Waking up at Luminance seems more like emerging into a corporate retreat, but the structure is designed to provide tools for a lifetime of recovery.

With guilt comes shame, and the team is working to help its clients find forgiveness: be it faith-based or simply through better discharge planning. Finding that recovery success rates are directly correlated to societal change shouldn’t come as a surprise to any - and yet just now is the addiction treatment industry embracing the use of technology and connection to build a community of prevention and protection. With an app called Trigger, clients can remain attached to the Luminance relapse prevention program even after they leave, through geofencing targeted locations where the client may visit that were once part of their active addiction. The app triggers a response from a peer or their therapist, and the process of improvement moves on.

Luminance believes that together is better. Be it demonstrating the benefits of serving others through community events, like distributing food at the Second Harvest Food Bank, or collaborating with local elementary schools to promote reading materials to first graders, clients are meeting change hand in hand with those around them.

Waking up at Luminance seems more like emerging into a corporate retreat, but the structure is designed to provide tools for a lifetime of recovery. Each day begins with breakfast, a morning meditation and beach walk. Morning sessions of group therapy give way to afternoon activity time- quintessentially Californian- surf or equine therapy. Dinner follows, and then individual quiet time, if desired. Once you’re discharged, a planner will help you design a post-treatment plan: personalized for your specific needs. Be it placement in an outpatient program or an extended residential stay, the Recovery Center has your best future in mind. So why not wake up into a bright new day with Luminance. It might be easier than you think.

How will I know?

Is it a phase? How much is more than “normal”? Is it an addiction? How can I tell? To help you answer some of those questions, the American Psychiatric Association defines substance use disorders as a problematic pattern of use leading to significant impairment or distress. This is generally identifiable when at least two of the following occur within a 12-month period:

1. Using the substance in larger amounts or for longer than intended.

2 Desire or unsuccessful efforts to reduce or control substance use.

3. Spending a lot of time getting, using, or recovering from use of the substance.

4. Cravings and urges to use the substance.

5. Recurrent substance use resulting in failure to fulfill major obligations at work, home or school.

6. Continuing to use, even when it causes problems in relationships.

7. Important social, occupational or recreational activities are discontinued or reduced because of substance use.

8. Recurrent substance use in situations in which it is physically hazardous.

9. Continued substance use despite knowledge of a physical or psychological problem that is likely to have been caused or made worse by the substance.

10. Tolerance: An increased need in the amount of the substance required to achieve intoxication or desired effect OR diminished effect with use of the same amount of substance.

11. Development of withdrawal symptoms and/or additional use of the substance or another substance to reduce withdrawal symptoms.

Of course, the first step is admitting that a problem exists—this tends to be the greatest barrier. The good news is that once you’ve passed that barrier, there are effective tools to help people suffering from addictions. Qualified and reputable treatment programs, along with Alcoholics Anonymous (aa.org), Narcotics Anonymous (na.org), and SMART Recovery (smartrecovery.org) are a few. Surf and Turf

5,000 sq. ft. of Fun at Bark City in Surf City, U.S.A.

“They have couches.” “Babethey have couches for the dogs to sleep on!” I left my laptop open the other day to Bark City’s homepage. My husband used it for a minute to Google something and was grabbed by the photo of happy dogs lounging on fluffy, comfy couches. Not something you’d see normally at a doggy daycare.

But Bark City’s founder Bryson Berryman is looking to change the game. No more tired kennel-lined daycare facilities. Instead, Bryson would like to let your four-legged friend hang out in his 5,000 square foot yard - complete with splash pool.

“I started taking classes in dog behavior, visiting dog parks, working with shelters, and talking to dog experts,” he says. “I realized one day that it would be the most fulfilling job to be able to work with dogs everyday. And that place I’d been dreaming of being able to take Reggie? I could build it.” Bryson and his sister Brittany Berryman opened the doors of Bark City in September of 2015, and since, they have become the OC’s specialists in cage-free day-care and boarding.

Bark City got its start long before the turf was installed, however, when six years ago, Bryson found his way to the Humane Society in Orange County. He adopted Reggie, and soon found that as a new pet owner, he needed a place for Reggie to sprawl out when he had to take an appointment or travel for work.

“We are a family run business that treats each dog like it is part of our family,” says Brittany. “This is a business based entirely on trust: we’re taking care of people’s four-legged kids here!” Michelle and her brother adore their clients, and their client’s humans, too.

Building a staff that is detailed, kind, and work hard to create an environment steeped in community is at the forefront of Bark City’s ethos. “Most of our customers are referrals - people tell their family, friends, co-workers. Without the support of our customers, there would be no Bark City.” Each dog is put through a temperament test prior to daycare and boarding, and all dogs must be up to date on vaccinations, spayed or neutered, on a flea regimen. And all employees are pet-safety and CPR certified. “Our mission is to create happier, healthier dogs by making meaningful connections among owners, dogs, and the the greater canine community.” Did I mention they have couches?

Reverse Mortgage Solutions

AL W. HENSLING, PRESIDENT OF UNITED AMERICAN MORTGAGE CORPORATION ADDRESSES FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS AND CLEARS UP COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS

It is estimated that approximately two-thirds of Americans will receive more than 50% of their retirement income from Social Security.

But seniors who are concerned about the future of Social Security (or whether they will outlive their retirement savings), may want to look to their home equity as another possible source of income.

A reverse mortgage is a retirement asset that can be effectively utilized as part of a retirement income plan to support your retirement goals and needs - and help retirement-age homeowners “age in place.”

In the following interview, we asked Al W. Hensling, president of United American Mortgage Corporation, to address some of the more frequently asked questions and clear up common misconceptions regarding reverse mortgages:

Q: What is a reverse mortgage and how does it work?

A: A reverse mortgage is a special type of home loan that lets you convert a portion of the equity in your home into cash. The equity that you built up over years of making mortgage payments can be paid to you. However, unlike a traditional home equity loan or second mortgage, HECM borrowers do not have to repay the HECM loan until

the borrowers no longer use the home as their principal residence or fail to meet the obligations of the mortgage. You can also use a HECM to purchase a primary residence if you are able to use cash on hand to pay the difference between the HECM proceeds and the sales price plus closing costs for the property you are purchasing.

Q: If I take out a reverse mortgage, will the bank own my home?

A: No, you continue to own your home just the same as with a regular mortgage.

A reverse mortgage does not affect regular Social Security or Medicare benefits. However, if you are on Medicaid or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), any reverse mortgage proceeds that you receive must be used immediately.

Q: What is the difference between a reverse mortgage and a home equity loan?

With a second mortgage, or a home equity line of credit, borrowers must make monthly payments on the principal and interest. A reverse mortgage is different, because it pays you – there are no monthly principal and interest payments. With a reverse mortgage, you are required to pay real estate taxes, utilities, and hazard and flood insurance premiums.

Q: Are there any special requirements to get a reverse mortgage?

A: To be eligible for a FHA HECM, the FHA requires that you be a homeowner 62 years of age or older, own your home outright, or have a low mortgage balance that can be paid off at closing with proceeds from the reverse loan, have the financial resources to pay ongoing property charges including taxes and insurance, and you must live in the home. You are also required to receive consumer information free or at very low cost from a HECM counselor prior to obtaining the loan. You can find a HECM counselor online or by phoning (800) 569-4287.

Q: Will I lose my government assistance (Social Security and Medicare) if I get a reverse mortgage?

A: A reverse mortgage does not affect regular Social Security or Medicare benefits. However, if you are on Medicaid or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), any reverse mortgage proceeds that you receive must be used immediately. Funds that you retain count as an asset and

could impact eligibility. For example, if you receive $4,000 in a lump sum for home repairs and spend it all the same calendar month, everything is fine. Any residual funds remaining in your bank account the following month would count as an asset. If the total liquid resources (including other bank funds and savings bonds) exceed $2,000 for an individual or $3,000 for a couple, you would be ineligible for Medicaid. To be safe, you should contact the local area agency.

BENEFITS OF A REVERSE MORTGAGE

- No Loan Repayment Required As Long As You Live in Your Home

- Retain Full Ownership of Your Home

- Tax-Free Funds As Long As You Live in Your Home

- Loan is Insured By the Federal Government

- You Can Choose the Method to Receive Your Funds that Best Suits Your Needs

Q: How much money can I get and are there restrictions on how the proceeds may be used?

A: The amount of funds you are eligible to receive depends on your age (or the age of the youngest spouse when there is a couple), appraised home value, interest rates, and in the case of the government program, the FHA lending limit, which is currently $625,500. If your home is worth more, then the amount of funds you may be eligible for will be based on the $625,500 loan limit. In general, the older you are and the more valuable your home (and the less you owe on your home), the more money you can get.

During the first 12 months after closing, a borrower cannot access more than 60 percent of the available loan proceeds. In month thirteen, a borrower can access as much or as little of the remaining funds as he or she wishes.

There are exceptions to the 60 percent rule. If you have an existing mortgage, you may pay it off and take an additional 10 percent of the available funds, even if the total amount used exceeds 60 percent.

What You Don’t Know Can Kill You

“What you don’t know can’t hurt you.” It’s a pretty popular saying. It’s quite often used to justify not informing someone about a problem or a misdeed.

The idea being, if because you don’t know about an event or a situation, you can’t make yourself unhappy by worrying about it.

It would be nice if “What you don’t know can’t hurt you” applied to nutrition as well. Unfortunately, it doesn’t quite work that way.

Because when it comes to food and drink “what you don’t know can kill you.” For example, if you don’t know that:

1) A 12 ounce (355 ml) can of Mountain Dew contains a whopping 46 grams of sugar and;

2) The recommended daily intake according to the United States government guidelines, men should consume no more than 37.8 g (9 tsp.) of sugar a day; women no more than 25.2 g (6 tsp.).

...you could be perfectly happy drinking one or two cans of Mountain Dew (or another soda brand) each day.

But over time, chances are, your soda consumption will play a big role in your premature departure from this planet.

Welcome to Part 2 of my three-part series about the 2014 documentary Fed Up, produced and narrated by American journalist Katie Couric.

Fed Up is meant to be a wake-up call to people everywhere. It’s a call-to-action about the need to educate yourself about nutrition so you understand exactly what you and your family are putting in your bodies. So you can both improve your quality of life and the length of your life.

Here are some more interesting takeaways from Fed Up

How America’s (and the rest of the world’s) “love affair” with sugar started - Back in 1977, the senate special committee on nutrition looked into the connection between diet and heart disease. The committee was headed by Senator George McGovern. Experts told the committee that obesity would soon be the number one form of malnutrition in the United States. In addition, concern was voiced that the American diet, which had become overly rich in fatty meats, saturated fats, cholesterol, and sugar, would send medical costs skyrocketing. They put all this into what was to be known as The McGovern Report. “Not so fast,” said the egg, sugar, dairy and beef associations who feared the publication of the report would result in a drop in sales. “We demand a rewrite,” they screamed. And they got their way. The dietary goals were revised and the words “reduced intake” were removed from the report. Instead, they encouraged Americans to buy leaner products and buy more food with less fat. The 1980’s began with a new health doctrine and a brand new market every food product imaginable reengineered to be low in fat.

Low fat? No problem. Just add sugar“When you take the fat out of the food, it tastes nasty. It tastes terrible. It tastes like cardboard. The food industry knew that. So they had to do something to make the food palatable, to make it worth eating. So what did they do? Dumped in the sugar,” says Dr. Lustig. Fed Up informs us that between 1977 and 2000 Americans have doubled their intake of sugar.

Children and young adults are now having serious health issues - “We’ve seen strokes in eight-year- olds. We’re seeing heart attacks in twenty-year-olds. We’re seeing kids at 30 – by their 30th birthday – needing renal dialysis for kidney failure because of these problems,” states Dr. Mark Hyman, Chairman of the Institute for Functional Medicine.

Too much sugar in any form is dangerous - Besides cutting down on consuming an excess amount of sugar, your focus should also be on reducing your intake of refined

carbohydrates. “White Bread, white rice, potato products, prepared breakfast cereals are digested into glucose literally in an instant in the digestive tract. You can eat a bowl of corn flakes with no added sugar, or you could eat a bowl of sugar with no added corn flakes. They might taste different, but below the neck, they’re metabolically the same,” says Dr. David Ludwig, Professor of Paediatrics, Harvard Medical School.

Artificial sweeteners are not the answer - A lot of people think that they can just switch from sugar to artificial sweeteners and everything will be ok. “Diet this, diet that... Splenda... aspartame, but it triggers hormonal responses that cause you to produce more insulin. They make you crave more. They make you hungry. You think sugar’s on the way. Your brain’s like, “Wait a minute. I think sugar’s coming. I tasted it.” So, low sugar, low fat, diet foods, they’re dangerous and they’re actually disease producing as well,” says Dr. Hyman.

Is this seemingly benevolent substance lurking in your fridge?

- Soda has been pretty much demonized for the empty calorie sugarladen substance that it is...so are you ahead of the game if you buy fruit juice instead? Not according to Dr. Lustig. “When you consume sugar naturally, that is as, in fruit, you’re getting the fiber that you need to mitigate the negative effects. Am I worried about fruit? No. But am I worried about fruit juice? Oh, you bet. Because when you take the fiber out, you might as well be drinking a coke,” he says.

That’s it for Part 2. In Part 3, I’ll take a look at, among other things, how specific politicians have put the profits of companies in their district ahead of you and your children’s health.

The Benefits of Diabetic Socks

The primary purpose of diabetic socks is to keep your feet dry, decrease your risk for foot injury and avoid preventing or slowing blood circulation. The difference between diabetic socks and regular cotton socks is that they are usually are made of materials that wick away moisture, are fitted, padded and are non-binding.

Because people with diabetes are at higher risk of foot injuries and infection due to damage to their circulatory and nervous

systems caused by high blood sugar levels, they would benefit from wearing diabetic socks.

Nerve damage, or neuropathy, decreases sensation and increases risk of injury, particularly on the bottom of the feet and can also cause people with diabetes to be unaware of an injury and delay treatment. Circulatory problems also make it harder for wounds to heal.

For these reasons and more, proper foot care is critically important for people with diabetes and diabetic socks are designed with these specific issues in mind.

Live, Laugh, Leak?

Did you know that approximately 1 of every 2 women experiences some form of urine leakage? This should never be considered a normal part of aging. Oftentimes, it can be treated non-surgically and without bladder control medication. Evans Tran, PA, at Pacific Coast Urology Medical Center’s Women’s Bladder Control Center, discusses this embarrassing condition and how Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation can help.

Q: What is urinary incontinence?

A: Urinary incontinence (UI) is a common condition defined as an involuntary leakage of urine. UI affects many daily living activities and a person’s quality of life.

Q: What causes urinary leakage?

A: Twice as many women are likely to be affected as men and the prevalence increases with age. However, younger women also experience urinary leakage. Common factors include pregnancy, labor and delivery, back injuries and weakening of the pelvic floor muscles that provide support and bladder control.

Q: How is UI commonly treated?

A: Unfortunately, many women are too embarrassed to talk to their doctor about this condition and wear pads and adult diapers to cope with UI. Other women try medications. The results are less than satisfactory for most patients.

At the Women’s Bladder Control Center we successfully treat urinary leakage patients with Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation. This treatment has been used for many years and has a very high success rate in appropriate candidates.

Q: What is Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation?

A: This therapy is designed to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles with targeted in-office and home therapy. The first phase is to test, measure and document the strength of a patient’s pelvic floor muscles by sensors. The second step is to gently stimulate and contract the muscles. I personally guide each of our patients and show them how to contract these muscles. Then I give a personal “prescription” for a home exercise regimen. I see patients weekly for the first four weeks of the program and then on an as needed basis after that. The end result is strengthening the pelvic muscles and retraining them to hold a larger volume of urine.

Q: Are there any other benefits to Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation?

he tenth anniversary of the opening of the renovated and expanded Orange Public Library & History Center will be celebrated this year. Dedicated on April 21, 2007, the new library building marked a continued commitment to serving the community. The anniversary will be celebrated by looking back through the decades of Library history.

First established as the Orange Public Library Association in 1885, the Library consisted of 300 volumes donated by Robert E. Tener, then Orange Postmaster. The collection was housed at the Orange Hotel located in the plaza. With the popularity of the Library, the growing collection of the Library Association was donated to the City and the Orange

Free Library was established in 1894. In 1905 construction began on a Carnegie library building, which opened to serve the community in 1908.

A library building has continued to reside at the same location, East Chapman Avenue, since then. While remaining in the same location, the Library has undergone a variety of changes over the years. The Carnegie library building was replaced by a larger, more modern building in 1961. It then underwent extensive renovation and remodeling in 1999. These changes in the building reflected the growing needs of the Orange community. Shortly after the 1999 remodel, the library obtained a $9.13 million Library Bond Act for a new library project. The new Spanish Colonial Revival building was opened in 2007.

Visit the library throughout the year to celebrate the ten years of the new library building and library history through the decades. To commemorate the opening of the renovated and expanded Orange Public Library & History Center in 2007, we will present an anniversary event on Saturday, April 22, 2017 from 12:00 to 4:00 PM. The public is invited to be a part of the celebratory open house, with a photo booth, life-size Candyland in the Children’s Courtyard, and much more!

The Orange Public Library & History Center will present its first ever Orange Public Library Comic-Con® on Saturday, May 20 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Comic, fantasy, and science-fiction lovers of all ages are invited to join in on exciting events taking place throughout the day.

SSketching a Future

DAVID VELASQUEZ and THE ART OF DOODLING

ince shopfronts became shopfronts, there has been a need for signs: the need for signs begetting the craft of sign painting. Hand-lettering arose in America in the 1800’s as a means of distinguishing between products and companies when capitalism began to boom. Until the advent of vinyl lettering in the 80’s, hand-lettering and sign painting was thought of as a viable career path, instead of the niche hobby it has become in today’s market.

David Velasquez was painting panels on trucks and handlettering company logos on the truck doors in the 80’s, finding that his artistic talent was in much higher demand in the transportation market. Boats, hot rods, jet skis, and even planes. Pinstriping led to logo design, logo design to portraits, and soon enough David was sketching historical points of interest and lovely, yet long-forgotten buildings.

Born in the late 50’s in Ventura County, California, David grew up in El Rio. A small, unincorporated town once

known as New Jerusalem, El Rio was founded in 1875 by the local postmaster, who also ran the General Store. David’s life took a similar trajectory, branching along two courses - marrying his high school sweetheart, and going to work in construction, now, well over twenty years.

An uncle first realized that David showed natural talent for drawing, and helped coach him from simply copying comic strips to drawing original art in 3D. For years however, David believed that he wasn’t good enough, and that his hobby was exactly that: just a hobby. When Six Flags Magic Mountain invited him to submit selections from his portfolio to a contest they were having, he balked: “I felt I was very unqualified - I had no intention of accepting the invitation.” 10 pieces were to be chosen by the team at Magic Mountain, to use on items for the gift shop. “I remember being very intimidated, but the sales rep strong-armed me, and they ended up picking all seven of the pieces I submitted. I was blown away.”

Giving him the confidence boost he needed, the contest blossomed into screen printing- and eventually a commission with the National Park Service. David “drew the historic buildings at Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, and Bryce Canyon National Parks. I also did pen and ink work, and the parks, and eventually Six Flags Magic Mountain all used my drawings for gift items sold at their gift shops.” Impressive, for a man who has no formal art education.

“Love all, trust a few, and do no wrong to anyone. With God’s help, you’ll live a great life’. I believe that, especially in relation to my art: it has been a great source of stress relief and inspiration over the years. Particularly when I come home from running my construction business.”

Most of David’s work is in single tones - black and white, just doodles. Those doodles are now being turned into a coffee table book.

“For years, I would just sketch: or doodle, and thought those pages were being tossed out when my wife was cleaning the house. Turns out, she saved them, and I was asked to include them in my new book.” Pencil sketches, graphics, and other artwork will go into David’s newest work- mediums which are still in high demand elsewhere.

“I am currently working on a logo for a radio station, family portraits, pen and inks of a motorcycle and hot rod, and pencil portraits of the ‘Kings of Cool’: Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, John Wayne, Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, and Robert DeNiro,” he says. David has work on display at the Ventura County Art Museum, and

the San Buenaventura Mission store. “I thank the good Lord for my family and friends who inspire me to do the right thing in life, and I want to keep doing what I love.” And his advice to young or aspiring artists out there? “Hone your skills, practice. Do what you love, be it drawing, painting, sculpture, music, even teaching. Art can be found in so many things.”

Ivar E. Roth, D.P.M.

Putting Your Best Foot Forward With One of The Region’s Most Respected Podiatrists

ow often do you think of your feet? Unless you have ugly toenails or acute pain, you probably don’t pay them much mind. They just get you around, right? But they’re not just for walking - if you think about it, your feet are your body’s foundation. When you experience pain in your lower back, your knees or your legs. from whom do you seek help? A neurosurgeon? An orthopedist? A chiropractor? A massage therapist?

Maybe you should be seeing your podiatrist.

Dr. Ivar Roth knows that if your feet aren’t happy, your entire body isn’t happy. He is a podiatrist and foot and ankle surgeon who has been serving the Newport Beach community for over 26 years. The only podiatrist to have full foot and ankle surgical privileges at Hoag Hospital, Dr. Roth is at the forefront of new technologies addressing every foot malady – whether trauma-related, dermatological, neurological, mechanical – from the tip of the toe up to (but not including) the knee.

Podiatrists know that a lot of pain in the ankle, knee, hip, back, and even as far up as the neck, may be attributa- ble to a condition called hyperpronation, or flat feet. When your feet don’t distribute weight and motion evenly, there can be serious repercussions throughout the body, which occurs to you like pain and exhaustion. Orthotics or arch support products have been used to help flat foot sufferers, but they are minimally effective. So Dr. Roth became the only master certified surgeon in Southern California to perform FootAlignTM, a simple 15-minute surgical procedure which permanently corrects flat feet. permanently. He has perfected the procedure and over the last decade has helped hundreds of people get relief from chronic pain and regain strength and mobility.

“I love my work,” says Dr. Roth about his interest in his field. “The foot is an understudied part of the body, yet it is so critical to our everyday lives. I am always seeking out new ways to improve the health of our feet.”

Dr. Roth’s master certification in FootAlignTM is just one example of his standards for staying at the cutting edge of his field. Incredible advances in medical laser technologies have opened up treatment options for a wide array of foot conditions, and Dr. Roth has been one of the leading doctors in the country perfecting laser techniques for a number of these conditions.

Diabetic patients often suffer from neuropathy, or a deadening of nerves, in the feet. It’s a debilitating and discouraging condition. Dr. Roth has perfected a laser treatment technique that addresses neuropathy. It’s a procedure that doesn’t involve drugs or pain, and for most of patients the feeling in their feet comes back, enabling them to walk again.

Other laser procedures are more cosmetic, but hardly less dramatic. Many of Dr. Roth’s patients see him to treat unsightly or fungus-ridden toenails, a condition that impairs confidence and can even cause pain. Unique to Dr. Roth’s practice is an FDA-approved machine for laser treatment of fungus toenails, which can permanently correct the problem. His curiosity and interest in finding new solutions have led Dr. Roth into developing specialized products, including nail and skincare, topical pain relief formulas, treatment for athlete’s foot and much more. All of Dr. Roth’s patented products are designed by him and made by him so, as he says, they do what he wants them to do.

Dr. Roth takes a traditional approach to the doctor-patient relationship, dedicating ample time and attention to each patient in a high-quality concierge practice setting, while making himself available to patients any time of day where necessary.

If you or a loved one is dealing with pain in the foot, ankle, knee, hip or lower back; if you suffer from neuropathy in your feet; if you have fungus toenails or any other foot malady, perhaps it’s time to call your podiatrist. Connect with Dr. Roth by calling (949) 650-1147, or visit www. footalign.net to learn more about permanent treatment for flat feet, www.nailclarity.com to learn more about treatment of fungus toenails, or www.drroths.com to try Dr. Roth’s custom formulas.

The Grand Del Mar

One of the country’s best resorts, a stone’s throw from home

We knew we were in for a memorable weekend when the driveway to the Fairmont Grand Del Mar (fairmont.com/san-diego) took its sweet time delivering us to the resort. A canopy of autumn colors rustled in a lazy and surprisingly warm San Diego breeze as we made our way into the canyon just a couple of miles inland from the 5, which might as well have been 500 miles from kids, laundry, work, obligations. The autumn colors eventually broke to reveal an expertly meandering golf course, which

in turn gave way to the fountained entrance to our longtime-in-coming getaway with girlfriends.

Situated adjacent to the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve in San Diego,

the Grand Del Mar is a mere hour’s drive from most of Orange County, but, once there, you feel utterly removed to the warmth of a Mediterranean estate. That utter removal can be of just about any flavor – we were

publications. Travel+Leisure named the Grand Del Mar as “California’s #1 Resort” and one of the world’s best; TripAdvisor called it the United States’ best hotel; it has swept all categories – hotel, spa, dining – with five stars from Forbes.

making it a girl’s weekend, with a focus on rejuvenation and simple togetherness, but golf aficionados, outdoor enthusiasts, couples, families and foodies will all find something exceptional at the Grand Del Mar.

It is remarkable to think that, with all the affluence and attraction of Southern California, with swank people desirous of swank accommodations, it is the Grand Del Mar, nestled rurally in North County San Diego and quite out of the way of Rodeo Drive, that consistently earns the highest ratings from all the swankest reviewers and

The Grand Del Mar is not an historic hotel – it opened in 2007 – but for those who love the richness of historic luxury, it satisfies abundantly. Many varieties of wood, marble and tapestry abound in artisan expression that is opulent without gaudiness, a balance struck by the best historic hotels. Of course, if you are one of those history types, you’ll know that historic properties are typically high on charm and low on space. Not so here. The rooms are commodiously cozy (or cozily commodious, per your preference), where you can sprawl out and never feel cold. Our suite was on an upper level with a balcony overlooking the canyon and portions of the golf course, with palm fronds swaying in the breeze just feet from us as we sipped our morning coffee.

Los Peñasquitos Canyon is a nature preserve with historical significance as the first route from Yuma to San

Diego, which is today a beautiful hiking, biking and horseback riding destination. Guests of the Grand Del Mar have access to all the canyon has to offer, with bikes available for pickup at the front desk, and horses at the on-site stables ready for trail riding. For those whose outdoor adventures entail a driver and a putter, the Grand Del Mar features the only Tom Fazio-designed golf course in San Diego, complimented by swing analysis technology services, a SAMPutt lab, specialized practice areas used by some of the world’s top professionals, and more. If you’re of the aquatic persuasion, the property features two pools, one ideal for families and one infinity (read tranquility) pool for adults only. Not far beyond pools are the resort’s private beach and oceanic excursions including sunset sails and whale watching. And this only scratches the surface.

For spa enthusiasts, the Grand Del Mar offers one of the most acclaimed in the country. Naturally it features a comprehensive menu of treatments, such as cleansing facials and therapeutic massages, as well as a custom line of organic products; but it also offers a world-class spa experience,

A friend’s gorgeous family photo taken on the bluffs in Del Mar inspired a visit to the stunning site during our stay.

with wet and dry saunas, indoor whirlpools, separate men’s and women’s relaxation lounges with fireplaces, access to the adults-only relaxation pool and all the hot tea, snacks and chocolates you could ask for.

The dining experience at the Grand Del Mar stands on its own and is itself the reason that many travel long distances to visit the resort. Six on-property dining venues offer something for every taste, mood and interest, often to the sound of live music. Addison, led by celebrated executive chef William Bradley, is the Grand Del Mar’s signature dining feature. Local ingredients are combined with contemporary French influences and presented with exceptional service to make Addison Southern California’s most awarded fine dining restaurant.

Amaya is a more casual option fusing Spanish, Italian and French fare with expansive, sunny views of the canyon and golf course. We enjoyed a sumptuous breakfast of various benedicts and the “Black & Blue” Brioche French Toast with granola, lemon crème fraîche and berries, and an immunity smoothie for good measure (the effects were immediate). But excellence does not stop at Addison or Amaya. From

its restaurants to its in-room dining, from its robust wine program to its seasonal menus and Afternoon Tea, the Grand Del Mar has something for every epicurean.

With all that the Grand Del Mar has to offer in activities, amenities, services and dining, the delight of being there is ultimately of the atmosphere, and that comes down to two things: beauty and people.

The staff members at the Grand Del Mar have a special quality. While hospitality professionals are typically welcoming, of course, the folks at the Grand Del Mar are authentically welcoming. So much so that either the resort has found hundreds of matchless thespians to do everything from valet the car to turn down the sheets, or the Grand Del Mar’s people truly enjoy being there. I want to believe that it is the latter.

As to beauty, the Grand Del Mar is simply an exquisitely designed place with lovely spaces; from the driveway to the marbled entrance to the furnishings and the vistas, you cannot escape a floor-to-ceiling sense of beauty of the most approachable kind. And so at every turn you are inspired to tranquility and delight. In the end, that is how we spent our 24-hour break from our everydays – enjoying each other, and simply basking in what the Grand Del Mar is. Long, slowly winding driveways always lead to something good.

Claims with Confidence

Roby & Associates – Keeping Insurance Companies

Honest Since 1987

It is rare to find someone who can say that they appreciate adverse events in their life. More rare perhaps to find someone who will admit that such a calamity led them to a job that they love with a company that treats them with mutual respect and admiration.

Nancy Stewart, a long time South County resident and mother of two filed a claim for a water leak with her insurance company and was repeatedly denied. While the problem stagnated, Nancy looked for help. How to go about maneuvering the claims process? How to protect her property and equity?

Fortunately she found the professionals at Roby & Associates Public Insurance Adjusters who worked on her behalf to negotiate the claim.

Roby & Associates specializes in helping clients negotiate their claim or claims for damage under any insurance policy covering real or personal property due to fire, water, wind, vandalism, theft – any first party claims.

“Wayne Roby and his contractor, Jack Paulus, assured me that I had a legitimate claim for damages. They immediately went to work, and we carefully and diligently managed my claim to the very end.”

Typically, homeowners hire out contractors to take care of things they can’t themselves: kitchen remodels, home automation. The work is planned and executed - such was with Roby & Associates.

“Wayne built my claim to maximize the monetary features and benefits of my policy coverage based on my actual damage,” she says. “He taught me what customers need, and how to most effectively manage an insurance claim.”

By the time he was able to help her resolve her claim, Wayne had recognized a kindred spirit in Nancy – someone who believed in the process and possessed a desire to help others who found themselves in a similar situation.

So he offered to help Nancy obtain her Public Insurance Adjusters License. She is now proud to represent Roby & Associates as their Consumer Advocate.

Seeing both sides of the business helps, and Wayne has worked for insurance companies as well as in adjustment for the last thirty years. “We help consumers maximize all of their policy coverage’s,” he says. Beyond that though, Nancy states: “You’re surrounded by a team of quality people who truly care, who are willing to deliver an unparalleled level of service to the consumer.”

Without a keen construction eye, most consumers are left in the dark when it comes to household claims – a situation that can easily can end up escalating into a repair cost nightmare.

Having an advocate to fight for you can be the most direct route to protect, secure, and repair the damages done, without incurring more in the process. Wayne, Jack, and Nancy are all active in various organizations and charities around South Orange County - from the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce to raising support for cystic fibrosis. But for Wayne, and all those who work with him, “working with our clients to get them back to a pre-loss condition is the reward in itself.”

For a complimentary consultation to determine how a Public Insurance Adjuster can help you navigate your insurance claim, call Nancy at (949) 842-5821 or Wayne (310) 251-8091.

Segerstrom Center for the Arts welcomes the return of popular musical ensemble Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox on February 17, 2017 in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. In 2015, the group’s soldout tours of Australia and the United States prompted the Buffalo News to proclaim, “Postmodern Jukebox is literally

Created by Bradlee, the rotating collective of Postmodern Jukebox has spent the past few years amassing more than 600 million YouTube views and 2 million subscribers, performed on “Good Morning America,” topped iTunes and Billboard charts and played hundreds of shows to packedhouse crowds around the world. As NPR put it, they’ve done this by “taking current Top 40 hits and re-imagining them as coming from older eras of popular music.” In one such remake, Bradlee and Postmodern Jukebox turned Miley Cyrus’ “We Can’t Stop” into a doo-wop ditty that’s garnered over 15.4 million views. Last year, they envisioned Radiohead’s alt-rock hit “Creep” as a torch-like ballad that’s racked up over 16.9 million views and was named one of the “9 Best Viral Cover Videos of 2015” by People magazine. MultiGrammy winning artist Lorde praised Postmodern Jukebox’s vintage take on her hit single, “Royals,” which has been viewed over 15.3 million times, as her “favorite.” They recently performed a ‘30s jazz remake of Elle King’s “Ex’s & Oh’s” for MTV UK.

Tickets to Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox start at $39 and are available online at SCFTA.org, at the Box Office at 600 Town Center Drive in Costa Mesa or by calling (714) 556-2787. A limited number of VIP packages will be available for purchase.
