IS AMERICA PREPARED TO RETIRE? A look at some ways to get ready. Provided by Ken Earwood

A

re Americans saving enough? Only 19% of U.S. adults describe themselves as “very confident” when asked about their savings. Worry spots include retiring without enough money saved (16%) and anxiety about having a “rainy day” emergency fund (14%). These findings come from the 2018 Consumer Financial Literacy Survey conducted by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling. (The survey collected data from 2,017 U.S. adults.)1

Only 41% of us keep a regular budget. If you are one of those roughly two-out-of-five Americans, you’re on the right track. While this percentage is on par with findings going back to 2007, the study also finds that while 65% of Americans are saving part of their annual income towards retirement, 29% indicate they are “not at all confident” that their savings will be enough to sustain them.1 Relatively few seek the help of a financial professional. When asked “Considering what I already know about personal finance, I could still benefit from some advice and answers to everyday financial questions from a professional,” 79% of respondents agreed with the statement. Yet only 13% indicated that they would seek out the help of some sort of financial professional if they had “financial problems related to debt.” While it isn’t surprising to think that 24% of respondents would turn to friends and family, it may be alarming to learn that 18% would choose to turn to no one at all.1 Why don’t more people seek help? After all, Americans of all incomes and savings levels certainly are free 6

to set financial goals. They may feel embarrassed about speaking to a stranger about personal financial issues. It may also be the case that they feel like they don’t make enough money to speak to a professional, or perhaps, a financial professional is something that millionaires and billionaires have, not the average American worker. Another possibility is that they feel like they have a good handle on their financial future; they have a budget and stick to it, and they contribute to an IRA, 401(k), or have some other investments. But that 79% admission, mentioned above, indicates that a vast majority of Americans are not as confident.1 Defined goals lead to definite strategies. If you set financial objectives, you vault ahead of most Americans – at least according to these findings. A written financial strategy does not imply or guarantee wealth, of course, nor does it ensure that you will reach your goals. Yet that financial strategy does give you an understanding of the distance between your current financial situation (where you are) and where you want to be. How much have you strategized? Retiring without a financial strategy is an enormous risk; retiring with a strategy that hasn’t been reviewed in several years is also chancy. A relationship with a financial professional can help to bring you up to date about what you need to do and provide you with more clarity and confidence when it comes to the financial future.

Medicare In Orange County

What You Need To Know

N

avigating the complex world of Medicare is confusing. Seniors often have questions about the various plans, options, and when to apply. If you or a family member are new to Medicare and don’t know where to start, let Edinger Medical Group and its team of Medicare experts do the work for you.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE? Older adults become eligible to apply for Medicare during the Initial Enrollment Period, which includes 3 months before you turn 65, the month of your 65th birthday, and 3 months after. If you or your spouse will continue working after 65, you have 8 months to enroll after you stop working or lose group health plan coverage. Deciding about plans in a timely manner is crucial, as there are “lock-in periods” in which you can and cannot change your coverage or health plan. Specific deadline dates can be obtained online at cms. gov. 8

ADVANTAGES OF MEDICARE ADVANTAGE Edinger Medical Group is currently accepting new patients who have qualifying Medicare Advantage HMO plans. Medicare applicants will be asked to choose between Original Medicare with a supplemental plan called Medigap plus a standalone drug plan, or a Medicare Advantage plan. Medicare Advantage plans are great because many have low to zero monthly premiums and they are considered “all-inone” plans, meaning they cover everything that traditional Medicare offers in addition to supplemental benefits like dental, hearing, vision, and prescription drug coverage.

WHAT IS OPEN ENROLLMENT? If you’ve already enrolled in a Medigap plan and you decide you want to switch to a Medicare Advantage plan, you’re in luck! You can enroll

To help patients understand their options, Edinger Medical Group offers referrals to trusted insurance brokers who will do a side-by-side plan comparison of the various Medicare plans and options at no cost. In addition, Edinger Medical Group provides free educational webinars and in-person seminars open to the public to break down what Medicare is, when to get enrolled, and how to determine which plan is right for you. Go to policyengineer.com/firstlook2024 or call 714965-2557 to register. The VIP-level care at Edinger Medical Group doesn’t stop there; it has a dedicated Senior Care team, accessible with a direct phone line, who help patients manage their medications, appointments, labs, referrals and any health-related concerns year-round. With offices in Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley, Edinger Medical Group is an award-winning primary care practice that specializes in Internal Medicine and Family Medicine. Cefali & Cefali, APC Trusted Accident Attorneys for the Most Serious Injuries By Jody Robinson

It’s a remarkable feeling when you can find someone to take your side. In relationships, sports: you name it. That one person who believes in you, makes you better, fights alongside you.

M

ichael Cefali matched with his person (his wife Courtney) long before law school - but their partnership extended through the long years studying for the bar and paid off in an even match that has stacked up in their favor many times over. Graduates of Chapman Law and California Western, respectively, they started the San Juan Capistrano-based Cefali & Cefali, APC in July of 2019 and have been fighting for the little guy ever since. From setting clients up with top-tier doctors and specialists, to negotiating stellar settlements, Cefali & Cefali, APC handles cases from start to finish with client health as their top priority.

it was very apparent that he cared about me and my case! He and his team are so HONEST and FAIR and it was clear from start to finish that he had my best interest in mind! Not only is he a good lawyer but he is a good person which made a world of difference for me. I could not have asked for a better experience with a personal injury attorney! I have already recommended him to all of my friends and I will continue to recommended him to anyone looking for a good lawyer! Thank you so much Cefali and Cefali!”

Another client Carrie echoes Jamie’s sentiment, “My husband and I were rear-ended on the freeway. We felt bad thinking of contacting a lawyer, but after several months of continuous pain and medical treatments, a friend recommended Michael Cefali. From the beginning, he lived up to his core values of integrity, loyalty, and vigorous advocacy. Michael is a dedicated, friendly, and competent attorney who seamlessly represented our interests and ensured the outcome was in our favor. He treated us not like a client, but like family; he

Focusing on all aspects of personal injury, the Cefalis are what you might expect in such a ring: passionate, aggressive, and most importantly, honest - all traits that have contributed to the couple having recovered millions of dollars per year on behalf of their clients since opening their firm. “The insurance companies would like you to think that they get to determine the value of your injuries, your suffering,” says Michael. “We’ll fight for every last penny because we know that you deserve it.” Clients appreciate the work that the Cefalis do. In fact, as of the date of this publication, you won’t find a single negative review of their firm anywhere on the internet. Client Jamie shares, “I am so grateful for everything that Mike Cefali and his team did for me! Not only was he able to help me get what I was owed in my settlement and then some, but he was so responsive and kind and 16

was there any time we needed him. He was empathetic to our situation and worked tirelessly with all parties to represent us. We don’t trust many people, but we trust Michael and his team and would highly recommend him to anyone seeking a professional, effective, and focused attorney.”

With five staff members to back up the stellar work Michael and Courtney produce, the couple remain incredibly hands on, based on a culture of empathy, integrity and advocacy. “We craft each case personally, build each one for trial, and remain accessible to clients,” says Michael. “Personal injury attorneys get a bad rap when really we’re the good guys. I like to think of our firm as a pirate ship. Nimble, clever, and tenacious in spite of being outspent by the adversary, we pry money from greedy insurance companies and give it to our very deserving clients.” Giving back is the spirit of the firm, and community work creates a direct link between Michael, Courtney, and their circle in San Juan Capistrano. The couple and their team proudly supports a number of local charitable and community organizations including: The Boys and Girls Club of Capistrano Valley (Courtney is on the Board of Directors), The San Juan Capistrano Friends of the Library (Courtney is also a board member), CREER, the Pacific Marine Mammal Foundation, and Project Coyote. Michael is a member of the San Juan Capistrano Rotary Club and has been recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow.

Unlocking Hope:

10 REASONS WHY KETAMINE TREATMENT COULD TRANSFORM YOUR BATTLE AGAINST DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY

By Tanya Dall, MD and Justin Yanuck, MD

As medical doctors deeply committed to the well-being of our patients, we understand the challenges many individuals face when conventional treatments for depression and anxiety fall short.

I

n recent years, a groundbreaking approach has emerged as a beacon of hope for those who have exhausted other options—ketamine therapy. Here are ten compelling reasons why you should consider ketamine treatment when other medications or talk therapies haven’t provided the relief you seek.

Rapid Relief: Unlike traditional antidepressants that may take weeks to months to show results, ketamine often produces rapid relief. Many patients experience a noticeable improvement in their symptoms within hours or days, offering a swift solution for those who can’t afford to wait for relief. Targeting Treatment-Resistant Depression: Ketamine has demonstrated remarkable efficacy in treating individuals with treatment-resistant depression/ anxiety—those who have not responded adequately to multiple antidepressant/ antianxiety medications. This breakthrough has provided a renewed sense of hope for those who have felt trapped in the cycle of despair. Reshaping Neural Pathways: Ketamine doesn’t just alleviate symptoms; it actively works to reshape neural pathways. By promoting the growth of new synaptic connections, ketamine facilitates neuroplasticity, enabling the brain to reorganize itself and form healthier patterns of thought. Unlike traditional medications which are merely band aids for one’s symptoms, ketamine’s action to promote new neural connections actually treats the source of one’s disease. Enhanced Response to Talk Therapy: For individuals who have struggled to 20

connect with traditional talk therapy, ketamine can act as a catalyst, enhancing the effectiveness of psychotherapy. This synergistic approach allows patients to engage more deeply in their therapeutic process, leading to profound insights and breakthroughs. Reducing Suicidal Ideation: Studies have shown that ketamine can rapidly reduce suicidal ideation in patients with severe depression. This is a crucial aspect, especially for individuals facing acute crises, as it provides a lifeline during moments of extreme vulnerability. Customized Treatment Plans: Ketamine treatments are highly customizable, allowing healthcare professionals to tailor the dosage and frequency based on individual needs. This personalized approach ensures that each patient receives the optimal therapeutic benefit, addressing their unique struggles with depression and anxiety. Long-Lasting Results: Ketamine treatments have demonstrated the potential for long-lasting relief, with some patients experiencing sustained improvement for weeks or even months after a course of treatment. This contrasts with the shortlived effects of some traditional antidepressants. Mind-Body Connection: Ketamine’s impact extends beyond the mind, influencing the body’s stress response systems. By modulating neurotransmitters and neurochemicals, ketamine helps restore balance to the intricate interplay between the mind and body, fostering a comprehensive sense of well-being.

Dr. Justin Yanuck, Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician and Board Certified Pain Medicine Physician and Dr. Tanya Dall, Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician

Low Risk of Dependency: Unlike certain medications that carry a risk of dependency, ketamine has shown a low potential for abuse or addiction when given in a controlled setting by a licensed professional. This makes it a safer option for individuals concerned about the longterm consequences of medication use. Regaining Control of Your Life: Perhaps most importantly, ketamine therapy offers a pathway to regaining control of your life. By breaking the chains of depression and anxiety, patients can rediscover their passions, rebuild relationships, and pursue a future unburdened by the weight of mental health struggles. In conclusion, ketamine therapy stands as a beacon of hope for those who have weathered the storm of depression and anxiety without finding solace in conventional treatments. As medical professionals, we wholeheartedly advocate for considering ketamine as a viable option, recognizing its potential to transform lives and offer a new dawn for those who have longed for relief. While the cost of treatment will certainly be a consideration, the value of reclaiming your life is immeasurable—a priceless investment in your well-being and future happiness. Mission Viejo Wigs:

Where Customers are “Family”

M

by Jody robinson

ission Viejo Wigs is truly a family business. Not in the traditional sense, where its owners and operators share the same genes. But rather in such a way that every person who has walked through Owner Betty Darroch’s doors in the 30+ years she has been in operation immediately felt like a member of Darroch’s extended family.

As a professional hair and wig stylist since 1962, Betty began her career at CBS where her résumé reads like a celebrity screenplay starring the coifs of a veritable “who’s who” of Hollywood: Ann Margaret, Carol Lawrence, the Midnight Specials and the Sonny & Cher Show. She went on to work for the Hallelujah Hollywood Show at the MGM Hotel in Las Vegas. But it wasn’t until she opened her own business in Mission Viejo that she felt as though she were “truly doing God’s work.” Her clients today include people who are experiencing hair loss due to chemotherapy treatment, alopecia or other medical conditions. Betty specializes in wigs, hairpieces and toupees for women, men and children and carries only the highest quality brands. Each wig or hairpiece is custom fit to the client for the most natural look and feel – no one will know you’re wearing a wig unless you tell them. “Hair loss, whether it is the result of illness, the aging process or heredity, can be a traumatic and emotionally draining experience,” says Betty. “We work with people on a daily basis who are facing the issue of hair loss for the first time. Our goal is to help you find the solution that works best for you and do so in a caring way that makes you realize that you are not alone.” There are wonderful testimonials from longtime customers on her web site (missionviejowigs. com), but for me, the best testament to Betty’s genuine, caring nature came from a source closer to home. When my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer six years ago, there were so many aspects of what she was facing - including the side effects associated wit chemotherapy treatment – that were out of our control. But my mother’s appearance was something she felt she could dictate. We knew she would lose her hair, but she was determined not to “look like a sick person.” From the moment my mother met Betty, she knew she had found the right place and more importantly, the right person to help her. Betty shared so many stories of survival – of longtime customers and friends who fought a similar battle and won. Her warm embrace and inspired hope and help steel her resolve to maintain a positive, fighting attitude when she was diagnosed with lung cancer. The wig Betty selected was the perfect color and style for my mother’s face (and head) shape. The wig was so natural looking that my mother

received many compliments on her “new do” and no one was the wiser. It’s been over nine years since my mother completed treatment and is now leading a cancer-free life. Although her own hair has long since grown back, she still often prefers to wear Betty’s wigs on “bad hair days.” Thank you Betty!

How Can I Tell If I Have Skin Cancer? There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs. 24

L

ook especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.

WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW 1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.

ACTINIC KERATOSIS

An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.

BASAL CELL CARCINOMA

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.

2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life. 3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match? B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin? C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue? D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.

SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.

MELANOMA

Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.

E - Evolution: Has it changed? F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others? 4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine. 25

ONE WAY PAINTING By Jody Robinson

Photography of Jeff McCabe by Lana Farfan, Caught in the Moment Photography

Ralph Waldo Emerson famously said “who you are speaks so loudly I cannot hear what you’re saying.” Keeping this quote in mind has served me well over the years, particularly in choosing friends … and when seeking out the services of professionals. In my opinion, integrity isn’t a word heard often enough in the business world. Competitive, certainly.

B

ut unfortunately phrases like “bottom-line oriented,” “unscrupulous,” even “cutthroat” have cropped up in the vernacular when hearing home improvement gone wrong stories from fellow homeowners. That’s why it was so refreshing to come across Jeff McCabe and his Orange County-based One Way Painting. In business since 1976, Jeff and his team serve all of the OC and specialize in interior and exterior residential and commercial painting. They swear by the rules of professionalism: “no cutting corners. No cheap materials. We pay attention to every detail, and never call a job complete until the customer is completely satisfied.” Some might call it good Christian values. Others might say it’s simply good

30

business. But for the last 42 years, working from the heart has earned One Way Painting such a respected reputation in the industry that the vast majority of their work comes through repeat customers or referrals from repeat customers. The company’s success isn’t merely rooted in customer service though. Boasting a superior knowledge of available product on the market and hiring the most professional crews in the business also goes a long way. “Our reputation speaks for itself; but if it didn’t, we have 16 satisfied employees on our permanent payroll who would put a hand up in

defense of the standards we set,” says Jeff. Standards which were born and bred through a commitment to ethical business practices and hard work. In 2001, Jeff teamed up with seasoned professional Ron Bartz as a journeyman, then took over the company when Ron retired, and has been growing it ever since. In 2009, Jeff took the pair of threeman crews and expanded the operation to encompass six crews, two office staff, and a project manager who oversees jobs, right alongside the man with the plan himself. “We currently have four trucks on the road and I’d like a full fleet someday. I’d like to leave a legacy for my daughters, and that means more than just cans of paint and a warehouse full of equipment and materials.” To Jeff, it means taking care of his employees, taking care of his family: taking care of business. The hope is that One Way Painting becomes a household name, for its quality of work and quality of values.

My husband and I can happily attest to both. When we moved into our home in San Juan Capistrano five years ago, we acquired quotes for exterior painting from several contractors, but were particularly impressed with Jeff and his crew. Prior to starting work at our home, Jeff came by in person to go over what the job would entail and answered all of our questions. His team showed up right on time the first day - and each subsequent day - and at the end of each day everything was cleaned up before they left.

process and followed up immediately upon completion of the job to ensure that we were satisfied with the results and our overall experience of working with One Way Painting). Their attention to detail is found from start to finish. For exterior projects, they begin by power washing to clean and remove any loose paint, mildew or mold. Then the patching: with stucco, trenching around the foundations and priming with an acrylic. They’ll treat your wood siding, eaves, fascia,

windows. Main doors, garage doors, trim. Even wrought iron, or other specialty surfaces like patio covers and fences. Most work depends on the client’s preference: flat to semi-gloss, acrylic or oil finish. Inside walls see flat, matte, eggshell, satin, semi, or hi-gloss. If you have natural wood cabinets and they need refinishing, One Way’s crew will see to it that they look new again. Also licensed and bonded as commercial painters, Jeff’s crew has been making businesses and their buildings look new again for 42 years. With a free on-site estimate, your custom needs are sure to have a custom solution. No deposits required, and “no surprises along the way,” Jeff is quick to add. “I think at the end of the day what sets us apart is taking our time with each and every customer that comes our way,” says Jeff. “We run a business like every person we interact with is family.” They may not be the cheapest out there, but then that wouldn’t fly in Emerson’s eyes, and not in Jeff’s either. “Our business is based on the Christian ethic of treating every customer with honesty and integrity. Every job is done ‘as unto the Lord.’ Does this mean we’re perfect? No. It does mean that we strive to do the best painting job possible.”

“We pride ourselves on working with a team of long-term employees - we do not hire off the street,” says Jeff. “We guarantee our work and do not require payment till the job is completed and the customer is completely pleased with our work.” Jeff and his crew delivered on these promises and more than exceeded our expectations - the result was outstanding work, a job completed on time and on budget and defined by unparalleled customer service (Kelly in his office was hyper-responsive to our inquiries during the estimating

CANNED HEAT Canned Heat rose to fame because their knowledge and love of blues music was both wide and deep. Emerging in 1966, Canned Heat was founded by blues historians and record collectors Alan “Blind Owl” Wilson and Bob “The Bear” Hite. They were joined by Henry “The Sunflower” Vestine, another ardent record collector who was a former member of Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention. Rounding out the band in 1967 were Larry “The Mole” Taylor on bass, an experienced session musician who had played with Jerry Lee Lewis and The Monkees and Adolfo “Fito” de la Parra on drums. The band attained three worldwide hits, “On The Road Again” in 1968, “Let’s Work Together” in 1970 and “Going Up The Country” in 1969 became rock anthems throughout the world with the latter being adopted as the unofficial theme song for the film Woodstock and the “Woodstock Generation.”

ERIC SARDINAS AND MARCO MENDOZA If you throw a boomerang the right way, it will come back. “And life is similar to this game with a boomerang – you sit there with a broken heart, and yet at the same time know it must go on, that you must move forward. You take a few steps forward and then a few back. That basically in some ways corresponds to the principle of a boomerang,” explains Rock/ Blues slide guitarist Eric Sardinas about the intention of the title of his Album, “Boomerang.” In the world of bass guitar there is not much Marco can’t do or hasn’t done. He has recorded and toured with some of the biggest names in the rock and music. A dynamic live performer who is equally at home at a huge stadium as a small jazz club, Marco can cover just about any musical style from jazz, fusion, world music, Latin groove to all out hard rock.

BIG MOUNTAIN For any of you that are not familiar with their history, Big Mountain first hit the charts in 1992 with the song “Touch My Light”, a song from their debut album Wake Up. Following “Touch My Light”, Big Mountain released “Baby, I Love Your Way”, written by Peter Frampton, which has become one of the most well known love songs and mega commercial hits of all times.

THE FOUR FRESHMEN The Four Freshmen are one of America’s most enduring vocal groups, bringing a jazz sensibility to the Great American Songbook singing with breathtaking harmony. With a sound centered around a tight 4-part vocal blend, like barbershop but jazzier, the Four Freshmen deliver a Fresh take on every tune they call, from dreamy, crooner-style ballads to swingin’, up-tempo arrangements that make a quartet feel like a big band. By Jody Robinson Los Cabos is a singular vacation destination where the desert literally meets the sea. In my humble opinion, the crown jewel of the region is the Grand Velas Los Cabos, an opulent all-inclusive resort strategically situated between La Baja’s iconic towns of San Jose Del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas. Awarded #1 luxury hotel in Mexico on TripAdvisor in 2023, the Grand Velas Los Cabos was the first of the brand’s family of resorts that we stayed in several years ago (the other equally lavish properties include Riviera Maya on Mexico’s Caribbean coast and Yucatan jungle and Riviera Nayarit in Puerto Vallarta). 36

For that initial visit, we had our then pre-teen kids in tow and each generation absolutely loved everything about our respective experiences. So much so that my husband and I leapt at the opportunity to revisit last month - this time as an adults-only vacation accompanied by friends who had long heard us rave about our previous escapes - long weekends away defined by exceptional service and hospitality, exquisite cuisine, incomparable accommodations, luxurious spa treatments and panoramic azure ocean views. Once here, you feel utterly removed from your everyday life - a sojourn that can take many different forms. A four-day family vacation with a focus on adventure, rejuvenation and sim-

ple togetherness. A relaxing couples retreat (think luxuriating spa services and whiling away a leisurely afternoon at one of three stunningly gorgeous pools overlooking the crashing waves and white sand beach below). Golf aficionados, outdoor enthusiasts, girlfriends and foodies will all find something exceptional at this all-inclusive oceanfront resort.

INCOMPARABLE ACCOMMODATION AND AMENITY

Just as we remembered, our accommodations were superb - simply magnificent in every way from the expansive space (over 1,180 sq. feet with private terraces and some with personal plunge pools) and refined decor to the premium amenities.

Each of the property’s 307 luxuriously appointed suites offer beachfront vistas where the shimmering shores of the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean and overlooks the pools (including one for adults only with a swim-up palapa bar) and perfectly manicured landscaping of the expansive grounds. For spa enthusiasts, the Grand Velas offers one of the most spectacular sanctuaries for the spirit (services here are not part of the all-inclusive, but are a wonderful opportunity for true pampering). As you might expect, SE Spa by Grand Velas features a comprehensive menu of holistic, wellness-inspired treatments, cleansing facials and therapeutic massages, based on age-old rituals and treatments; but it also offers a world-class experience, with 20 spa suites, a lavish water ritual, beauty salon and spa boutique. Included with any treatment of 50 minutes or more, the seven-step water journey features a eucalyptus-scented steam room with chromotherapy, polar pool, aromatherapy sensory shower, sauna, jacuzzi and multi-sensory pool. A spa valet provides personalized direction to make sure guests make the most out of the truly relaxing hydrotherapy experience (how to alternate the various hot and cold rooms and pools, and how long to linger in them).

DESTINATION DINING

The dining experiences at the Grand Velas stand on their own and are likely the reason that many guests (repeatedly) travel long distances to visit. Seven on-property dining venues offer something for every taste, mood and interest. For more sophisticated palates (by that I mean parents vs. younger children), the Grand Velas features an unsurpassed pair of dining destinations: the French-influenced Piaf and the resort’s signature restaurant - Cocina De Autor, an elegant-casual dining experience for guests 18+ led by celebrated Two

Michelin Star Chef Sidney Schutte of the Netherlands and characterized by “creative cuisine” - each meal an extraordinary culinary journey - presented with exceptional service. My husband and I fancy ourselves fledgling foodies - so an all-inclusive dining experience tantamount to a

veritable gastronomic journey around the globe (and paired with the finest of varietals)? You don’t have to ask us twice. Aside from Piaf and Cocina de Autor, there are three casually elegant eateries: Velas 10 (steaks and seafood), Luca (Italian-Mediterranean) and Frida (gourmet Mexican) and the family-friendly Azul for casual buffet and a la carte menu.

Velas 10

One of my personal highlights each day was time spent lounging by the 37

there is ultimately of the atmosphere, and that comes down to two things: beauty and people. While hospitality professionals are typically welcoming, the staff at the Grand Velas are matchless in their dedication to guest satisfaction (from the seamless check-in process upon arrival to 24-hour in-suite room ser-

Cocina de Autor pool and indulging in the ceviche offerings at pool-casual Cabrilla. I’m not generally a “hang out by the pool for hours” vacationer, but I literally spent the better part of each afternoon under a cabana working my way through the “cevicheria’s” menu exploring the true flavors of Mexico with an exquisite array of ceviche (the freshest of seafood and shellfish marinated in citrus and seasonings). Although we didn’t need it this trip, I would be remiss in not mentioning the built-in amusement of Grand Velas’ Kids Club and Teens Club. Reserved especially for the younger set, the resort serves up an impressive, all-inclusive platter of activities for the kids to choose from in their very own 1,000-square- foot retreat (for kids ages 4 to 12) replete with storytell-

ing, board games, arts and crafts, bingo, movies and more for the younger set. Teens (ages 13+) enjoy their own state-of-the-art 2,700-squarefoot facility to partake in everything from healthy cooking classes, movies and foosball to Xbox and Wii. Open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., the Club is complimentary with the resort’s standard package, including dinner and group activities that stretch well into the evening hours. With all that the Grand Velas has to offer in activities, amenities, services and dining, the delight of being

vice). The personal concierge service here sets a high bar in hospitality excellence. As to the unrivaled beauty of its aesthetic, the Grand Velas is simply exquisitely designed. Its majestic, tiered architecture embraces the golden sand and turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico so at every turn you are inspired to tranquility and delight. Between the sumptuous Grand Velas Los Cabos Resort and the soon-to-beopened Grand Velas Boutique Hotel (see sidebar), there’s really nothing holding you back from stepping into a day-to-day of exceptional service and astounding luxury. You won’t even have to write a book report on your trip afterwards, I promise. Grand Velas Los Cabos LosCabos.GrandVelas.com

Grand Velas Boutique Hotel An Ode to Personal Luxury and Anticipatory Service

In college I wrote a paper on an assigned text for the year, written by Kazuo Ishiguro, British Nobel Prize winner. The Remains of the Day details its protagonist’s long history of service as a butler at Darlington Hall. No surprise that what stood out as a college student was the lack of specialized servitude accessible to me at the time. When I tell you that my ears perked up (‘went through the roof’ as my husband tells it) at the first glance at Grand Velas Boutique Hotel’s ‘coming soon’ announcement, I mean it. An adults-only luxury all-inclusive hotel with exclusive facilities and amenities sounds like another amazing installment of the Grand Velas brand - but add a tailored service distinctive to each guest’s tastes, needs, and preferences? I realize that the class of literature which we know as a pastoral was named such because of the actual pastures and

sleepy love ballads, but I guarantee Grand Velas’ boutique resort will be equally as free from the complexity and corruption of city life. Look no further than the sparkling infinity pool overlooking the Sea of Cortez, 900 square feet of beautifully appointed accommodations in each of its 79 spacious rooms with private terraces and a separate living room with sofa, walk-in shower and jacuzzi, a daily replenished minibar with premium products and a 24-hour personal concierge.

Agave Bar

The new resort’s infinity pool overlooks the ocean and showcases a beautiful cactus garden in keeping with the brand’s incomparable architectural style and taste.

Sushi Roku

I

t’s estimated that the average person makes roughly 35,000 decisions per day, only about 120 of which are informed - which assumes a higher level of thinking went into them, perhaps assuming that executive functions are put aside. Unsurprising that some of those decisions are about food: what am I going to eat or drink today, and when? On the other side of that equation are the millions of minute decisions that went into formulating a single experience at Sushi Roku at Fashion Island: which incorporates innovative cuisine, incredible ambiance, first-class service, and fish. Only the freshest, finest fish from around the world serve as the centerpiece for the menu’s daily sushi and sashimi selections, signature hand and cut rolls. There is something here for every appetite and palate as my son and I discovered on a recent mother/son night out. Full disclosure: I’m half Japanese and pride myself on personally ferreting out the region’s best sushi and omakase (leave it to the chef or the literal translation “I’ll leave it up to you”) suggested offerings. Some establishments are steeped in tradition, while others like Sushi Roku infuse the culinary scene with a wide variety of dishes with a contemporary spin. The restaurant’s interior and ambiance is modern - think sleek lines, high ceilings and bonsai-inspired greenery throughout four distinct dining spaces: outdoor patio, spacious dining room, a bar separate from the dining room and the warm, walnut counter sushi bar. Out of a deep respect for tradition and the desire to enmesh past and 40

present, the restaurant serves diverse, non-traditional ingredients from Latin America and Europe in its magnificent edible artistry (global ingredients from Japanese sauces, jalapenos from Latin America, black truffles from France

and Italian cheeses). Whether you’re craving a taste on date night or simply attending a private event at the stunning Newport Beach dining room, the staff will attend to your every need, right down to a premium sake pairing by the glass, carafe, or bottle. Even though he can easily consume his weight in fresh fish, my 16-year-old son is my go-to sushi partner. His adventurous palate makes it especially fun to sample new and inventive fare. On this evening, our experience was an overthe-top experience of edible works of art where the freshest of seafood is delicately and perfectly balanced with extraordinary flavors and spices. Our favorite starters? The tuna crudo (with avocado, micro greens, garlic chips, sesame chips and aji amarillo), melt-in-your-mouth baked cod enhanced with sweet miso, the American Wagyu potsticker “gyoza” and ribeye wrapped asparagus that arrives sizzling in its own cast iron skillet.

I opted for several Roku style nigiri sushi while my son went straight for the signature rolls including the crunchy spicy tuna tempura, tuna jalapeno with yuzu olive oil and cilantro. Other popular picks include the Katana roll with combines spicy tuna, shrimp tempura topped with tuna & yellowtail, spicy mayo and the Gensai, which deliciously blends cucumber, jalapeno, avocado, topped with salmon, kizami wasabi, rice cracker and yuzu olive oil. The service here is worth a special mention - super attentive, yet unobtrusive. The atmosphere lively and upbeat. The ambiance and decor a modern aesthetic. And the food? Worthy of writing home about - every dish was delicious and artfully displayed. Order for takeout if you aren’t in the mood to dress up, or put on your finest and order one of each item drizzled with the truffle miso glaze. Trust me: it’s not a decision you’ll regret. Ask a SOMM By Jody Robinson

A good sommelier is a helper, a guide to finding the best wine for your food and experience. For this month’s installment, we again approached South County-based sommelier Micah Sampson to address a few frequently asked questions. Q Should I pay attention to

wine ratings? What do they mean?

A At the end of the day all wine rat-

ings really are are opinions and scores from people who drink and know a lot about wine. So if you need some help picking out a wine from a region you know nothing about, then sure, take a look at an online magazine and see what some of the ratings say. Generally, 88-90 points and higher mean the wine is going to be good. But once you get to the high 90’s you’re likely going to be paying a lot more for them, mainly because they have the high rating. But I can let you in on a little secret, many amazing producers out there don’t even get their wines rated! The best way to find these is to look for wines with high ratings, remember the areas they come from, and then look for other producers in the same areas. You can often find killer wines for a fraction of the price when doing it this way. Another secret… this is exactly the way Somm’s Stash wines are made

Sommelier Micah Sampson

Q How long do wines stay

good after opening?

A This is an easy one, but still important. In general, wines will still be good for a day or two after you open them, but will start to degrade a bit from the moment you open them. Usually by day three you’ll notice the wines aren’t as good as they were when first opened, and by days four and beyond the wines just don’t taste right. A little hint to get an extra day or two out of opened red wine is to seal the bottle with a cork or rubber stopper and store the half empty bottle in the fridge! The low temp in the fridge helps slow the degradation process. Just let the wine slowly warm up in a glass when you want one, cupping your hands around the glass will speed this up a bit.

Q What are sulfites and are

they bad?

A We’ve all heard it… “Do you have any wines without sulfites? They give me headaches.” This is when the som-

melier mentally puts his or her palm to their face. In the recent social-media-driven years, the word “sulfites” has become the new bad word in wine. But why? When did we become so focused on this one component in wine, treating it like a poison? It’s mentioned with an almost villainous undertone now, like some evil wizard is adding it to wine when no one is looking. In reality, sulfites have been a known part of wine making for a thousand years. They are harmless to almost everyone and occur naturally in all wines. Yes… I said naturally in all wines. Sulfites occur as part of the fermentation process, a natural byproduct of yeast metabolism during the conversion of sugar to alcohol. They are completely harmless to over 99% of all people. In fact, the human body produces sulfites, a whole bunch of it, there’s already about 10 times more sulfites in you on a daily basis than a bottle of wine. The thought of sulfites being a synthetic chemical added to wine is just a misguided fear. Winemakers might add additional small quantities near the end of fermentation to halt the process, but that’s the natural way to do it, like turning on the lights at the end of a dance party. It’s also added during bottling as an antioxidant to help prevent spoilage. But, they only use what is needed to complete those stages, usually using amounts far within acceptable boundaries. Sulfites do two things really well: they bond with oxygen molecules, keeping the wine from oxidizing into vinegar, and they push bacteria out of the wine to keep it from spoiling. Sulfites are like bouncers at the door of a bar, keeping the bad people out without ruining the party.

The Music of Olivia Newton-John Samueli Theater January 11 - 13, 2024

A

starry cast of Broadway veterans are teaming up to celebrate the life and career of the beloved singer and actress Olivia Newton-John!

With a 60-year career as an entertainer, Olivia Newton-John was a celebrated artist whose work impacted and inspired so many people around the globe. It all started with music, of course. She was a four-time Grammy Award winner who music career included fifteen Top 10 songs, including five songs that made it to #1. Her enormous popularity carried over to the movies too, where she secured her legendary status by starring in such iconic roles as Sandy in Grease and Kira in Xanadu.

46

Jessica Hendy is a vocal powerhouse who just closed the recent Broadway revival of CATS. She is the only person that has the distinction to have been in the original Broadway production of CATS, the National tour, and the Broadway revival. Kelli Rabke has enjoyed a prolific career on the Great White Way, with a resume that can boast of being one of the only Broadway stars to originate a role in both a Stephen Schwartz and an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. David Burnham was last seen on Broadway in the mega-hit musical, Wicked, playing Fiyero, a role that

he originated in the developmental workshops of the show. OC audiences might also fondly remember David’s starring turn in the Light in the Piazza at South Coast Repertory – a show he appeared in on Broadway, as well. Blaine Krauss has been “blowing us all away” with his talents on the national tour of Hamilton. Before that, he got his big break playing Simba in the Lion King national tour, and was a member of the Original Broadway Casts of The Cher Show and of Natasha, Pierre, and The Great Comet of 1812. Center Cabaret lovers will fondly remember Scott Coulter’s booming voice, wit and charisma from last season’s the Broadway Hollywood Holiday Soundtrack and we are truly honored to have one of NY’s most honored vocalists back again. For this special engagement, this show-stopping cast will perform their favorite songs from Olivia’s incredible catalogue in an emotional celebration of her life and legacy. Pets of the Month ADOPT ME

One year old Brody is a happy boy who loves to snuggle. Energetic and very playful, he is looking for an active family to call his own who can continue with his obedience training. Brody is a friendly pup, but would do best as the only pet in the home so he doesn’t have to share the spotlight.

Meet Sunny, a two year old mama cat now available for adoption. After raising five rambunctious kittens, it’s finally Sunny’s time to shine. She is an independent kitty, but still enjoys being petted and pampered. Whileon she gets along with other like-minded cats, Sunthe GO PAWS ny prefers to be Top Cat and wouldn’t mind living solo.

Five month old Doris and Marla are bonded sisters who love a good cuddle and are curious little explorers. These Lionhead baby bunnies have sweet personalities and are easy to handle and pick up. Doris and Marla would make a wonderful additional to just about any family.

BRING DOWN THE HOUSE WITH THE

By Jody Robinson

I haven’t been a kid in a while. What I recall about music lessons is that they were forced, and more importantly, stodgy.

B

eginning somewhere around the fourth grade, students were advised to pick an instrument for class, and I can honestly say I only know two adults from those classes who still play those instruments today. Needless to say, my music classes were nothing like the offering at School of Rock Huntington Beach. A unique community of teachers, musicians, and families, School of Rock Huntington Beach sounds exactly like what it is, and also nothing like what it truly means. Founded in 2014 by a trio of performers, educators, and business owners, the industry welcomed them onto the scene with open arms. Larry Boodman, an alum of the Orange County School of the Arts, and Jeff Nunes were members of an L.A-based indie rock group known as Fourwayfree. Joey Acona, a production and performance instructor at OCSA for many years, knew Boodman through their common connections. “The School of Rock was borne from the desire to create a safe place for supportive collaboration among students, and has instilled confidence, self-esteem, and discipline that will serve them well into the future pur50

suit of any goal, not just music," says Jeff. Practical instruction meets professional performance education. The students learn on guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, or vocals. But their weekly private lesson is combined with a weekly group rehearsal, “as the students prepare for an actual rock show that they perform at the end of the season. Themed - ACDC, Arena Rock, or Grunge. And played on professional stages like the House of Blues Anaheim.” If you’re not sure what you’d like to specialize in just yet, no worries. School of Rock Huntington Beach provides a free trial lesson to anyone interested, and all are welcome to give them a try. Ages 6 to adult are brought into the fold, and “given the chance to learn team work, practice commitment, and master their chosen instrument. It makes learning not only fun and engaging, but a team sport.” Glad I don’t have to be a kid to go back to School (of Rock).

When I was younger, my Mom loved to read me the book “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie.” The plot essentially revolves around an ever-growing list of to-do’s that had to be accomplished, all set into motion by the simple act of giving a mouse a cookie. This tale came back to me recently when I purchased a new television at Best Buy.

W

hat was a simple shopping trip ended up being an adult’s version of that circular tale. If you give a grownup a television, they’ll have to measure their wall. When they measure the wall, they’ll realize they may actually have room for a bigger television. When they buy the bigger television, they’ll find out they have no idea how to mount it to the wall. When they start mounting it to the wall, they’ll see that the power outlets are all in the wrong 56

places. When they realize the outlets need to be moved, they’ll call an electrician. (This could go on forever.) Luckily for clients who have been on the receiving end of ReelTime’s patient, intelligent, and personalized service, the rabbit hole of home automation doesn’t have to swallow you entirely. With the help of their independent certified Control4 dealer, it’s easy to update your home without upending your entire life.

After all, the true luxury of an integrated entertainment system is really dependent on its ability to deliver seamless entertainment. By placing every control at your fingertips, the team at ReelTime helps homeowners manage everything from how brightly lit your family room is, to your streaming devices - all with a single remote. And best yet? You can control your whole home from the comfort of your couch- even seeing who is at the front door, without ever

leaving your seat. Simple, clean, and uncluttered. And on the home entertainment front … when you started planning for your ultimate home theater set-up and sound system, could you find the right media cabinetry for your particular space – cabinetry that wouldn’t catch on fire from the heat of the equipment, or that would simply

We’re here to make sure you get the equipment that will give you what you want and the system that will work with that equipment, without leaving you to fend for yourself.” look good in the room? Did you understand half of what the televisions, receivers and other devices could do, and did you have anyone to hold your hand to make sure you weren’t overspending for what you wanted? Big box retailers, the professed champions of value, are happy to sell you any home theater and sound equipment you think you might like, and send you off to figure it out at home. That’s what they do. And that’s all they do. If you want the home theater system that you envision, seek the services of Skip Myers and his team of experienced professionals at ReelTime to take you from start to finish for the home theater or sound system of your dreams. “Usually there is a part of the job that you find you just can’t do by yourself,” says Skip, who has overseen the design and installation of thousands of home theater and sound systems over the course of 40-plus years in the business. “You get your brand new television home, you’re so excited, then you realize you need to move an outlet or none of the cabinets you can find will fit your space.

Skip opened the doors at ReelTime in 1983. Today, the technicians and designers that Skip assigns to clients are all ReelTime employees, knowledgeable in all home theater and sound technologies. First, they work closely with you to determine what you’re looking for. Then they custom design every aspect of the project, from wiring to custom-built cabinets, frames, or built-in wall designs. Finally, licensed, in-house contractors install your entertainment system with care and precision.

Skip is also an advocate for getting what you’ll use, which is part of the design and planning process.

There are a couple of things that people may not think about when they embark upon the road to their own home entertainment system.

“You can buy everything you want to, but if you can’t operate it, what’s the point?” he says. “There’s the television, DVD and Blue-ray; there’s the receiver, there’s Apple TV… it’s all great, but how do you get them to work together? We’re big advocates of the universal remote. Not everyone knows how to get the most out of their systems with one powerful remote – they’re not expensive, but the best ones are computer-based. We’ll set that up for you so you’re getting the most out of your custom system.”

“You need to think about your home theater goals,” says Skip. “You don’t have to do everything at once – you can do it bit by bit – but if you know where you’re going, you’ll save money and when it’s all said and done, you’ll have exactly what you want and what you will actually use. We’re here to help you determine your goals.”

It’s easy to assume that personal service is expensive, but a conversation with Skip and the experts at ReelTime is free. Ultimately, in planning your purchases for the right outcome, you’re likely to save money while avoiding chilling setbacks. The only chilling you want to be doing is in front of your fantasy home theater system.

Owners Tom and Donna Schuster launched their own company after realizing that “on our own we would be able to offer quality products in an honest environment to our customers, as well as servicing the products we sell.”

Tom and Donna, credit their success to date to the quality of customer service they and their team give their customers, which in turn creates a wonderful repeat and referral business. “Although there may be providers of similar products, there is no one that can match our superior customer service – from showing up on time, making precise measurements and flawless installations - and with a professional ‘can do’ attitude,” says Donna.

Specializing in custom shutters, blinds (mini, faux, wood, vertical), cellular shades, woven woods, plantation and security shutters and everything in between, Tom and Donna offer free in-home consultations for design as well as measuring, they always include free professional installation and prefer to bring all of the samples to each client’s home to go over the assorted styles and many color options to suit each home’s interior and its homeowner’s unique lifestyle.

Tom adds that “our pricing with unbeatable discounts, sales support and the fact that we offer our customers an in-house design team at no additional charge is the first step in setting us apart from our competition. I am proud to say that we have built a reputation in the business for having the highest quality, best beauty, fit and finish and value available. All of our products come with a lifetime warranty.”

“We listen to you and then incorporate your ideas with ours to design your custom shutters, blinds or shades,” says Tom. “Our portfolios and samples are very extensive, so you will be able to envision how your windows are going to look when complete." 58

A 5-Star Yelp rated company, South Coast Shutter and Shades boasts scores of glowing testimonials online, including Debora R of Laguna Niguel who writes "Donna and Tom are amazing! Great products, great prices, great service.I've used them twice for two different businesses and I could not be happier. Donna makes suggestions based on what I tell her

my needs are and she has been spot on with her recommendations. Installations by Tom are quick and easy. Highly recommended!" Another reviewer, Doug W. of Mission Viejo posted that "From the first call, I knew I was dealing with a reputable, experienced, HONEST company. Donna and Tom are absolute PROS and obviously take pride in their work … Their price was very competitive. Also, what they quote is what you pay - keep that in mind when talking to the "other guys" whose price seems to go up and up. All appointments including install were FAST. The installation was flawless. I had a question later that evening about my motorized shades and they called me back IMMEDIATELY. My impression is that I could call them 5 or 10 years from now and they would just as helpful."

JOBST™ medical compression stockings and socks are a simple and comfortable way to help avoid heavy, tired and achy legs and the swelling of feet and ankles.

Travel Can Be Tough on Your Legs

Unlike the products available at your local drugstore, JOBST™ medical compression stockings and socks are recommended by physicians for their clinically proven gradient compression benefit. any people travel long distances and have to remain seated for two or three hours or even longer. They might not think much of it, but when movement is constrained, the blood circulation in the legs is restricted. This can contribute to heavy legs, leg pain and swollen feet and ankles. Prolonged sitting is also a major risk factor for the development of phlebitis and Deep-vein Thrombosis (DVT). Deep-vein Thrombosis involves the formation of blood clots (thrombi) in the deep leg veins during prolonged inactivity. In some cases, blood clots 62
