Building a Secure Future Ken Earwood, Titan Financial & Insurance Services By Jody Robinson

In Greek Mythology, Titans ruled long before the gods existed. Behemoths, they opened the world for what was to come. Today, we know a varied few as true titans: of industry, literature, music, mathematics, sport.

K

it Marlowe, The Beatles, Einstein, Teemu Selanne (for the Orange County natives). Ken Earwood might not be on your shortlist yet, but as the President of Titan Financial and Insurance Services, his expertise is of the influence you’ll want when looking towards retirement.

“We make sure each person that comes to see us has a plan in place to ensure they have funds that will last the rest of their life," he says. “You don’t have to live paycheck to paycheck forever like when you were first married....you certainly don’t have end up back where you started in retirement.”

Sixteen years ago, Ken started Titan Financial & Insurance Services, Inc. in Huntington Beach and has operated in the ensuing years since in the same location. But the journey to opening his own firm began more than two decades ago, with simple work ethic. Much like the world-builders, “my parents taught me everything about starting from the ground up. My Dad was an electrical engineer, and worked for the same company for 48 years. My mom was an entrepreneur. Everything was earned.” A graduate from Long Beach State with a degree in Business Marketing, Ken jumped into the industry feet first, with a job at one of the nation’s largest brokerage firms. With his college sweetheart by his side, loving his day-to-day was easy, and remains so today. Without her support, we couldn’t have come this far.

Ken meets with his clients annually, keeping them on the right track, ensuring each allocation is in the proper place, and that individual checklist items are taken care of: life insurance, investment taxes, retirement income planning, chronic care planning and Legacy/Wealth transfer planning with tax-free death benefits. At every stage, he is there to meet your needs. Getting started, accumulating wealth, getting ready to distribute it over your retired years, or even pass onto loved ones. There isn’t much they can’t cover, and the pride Ken takes in his client services shows. Most firms simply drill into accumulation, “they don’t bet on safety in retirement and distribution. Putting up numbers on the overall market is all well and good, but how do you make sure you’re not going to come up short in the long run?”

“Everyone remembers what it’s like not to have money. Like when you were a young married couple just starting out. We had nothing to begin with, but we had each other and our work ethic.” The work at Titan changes constantly, but their number one priority is ensuring that the biggest fear in financial planning never comes to fruition for any of their clients: that you outlive your money.

“My kids are so important to me - and I want to leave them a legacy they’re proud of as well," says Ken. "I have two sons and a daughter, and it is incredibly valuable for them to see a balanced book in the making, so they have something to model.”

6

The Titans were displaced, eventually. Their age ended, as will all of ours. But what, Ken would like to know,

President Ken Earwood with his family (from left): Mason, Teri, Brooke and Brady

will be left after you’re gone? Going to church and having faith in Jesus Christ teaches us to give service, help in the well-being of others, our neighbors and community. All aspects of his personal and professional life that Ken hopes are communicated when clients put their financial futures in Titan’s hands. “I’ve been in this business for 28 years: I want my clients to trust the time I’ve put in, but also the man that I am. One who is looking towards the future with you. A secure, wellplanned, stress-free future.” Titan Financial & Insurance Services, Inc. 16531 Bolsa Chica St., Ste. 250 Huntington Beach (714) 840-9283 www.TitanFinancial.net

elaborate upon their ideas, and learn to sequence and connect them together. Young writers learn to develop these skills over time through play, storytelling, writing practice, and in modeled conversations with adults or older peers. When should children start learning to write?

Ideas & Insights: Helping Your Child Develop Strong Writing Skills “You can make anything by writing.” – C.S. Lewis, Writer and Author As adults, we write for a reason: to write a letter, to make a list, to leave a note, to communicate with a friend in a letter or e-mail or to create a story. Children learn to write most easily when they write with purpose too, rather than being told what they should write about.

L

ike all other things, learning to write is a process. When children realize that writing communicates meaning, they begin to experiment with it and usually start by using scribbles on a page. From there they start to use symbols that look like letters and then they use real letters although they may go back and forth using real letters and their own symbols. These are exciting first steps, because it shows that children are aware of a difference between drawing and writing and you can support them by asking what the writing says. Over time, as children are exposed to examples of writing in their environment and in the books you read with them, they gradually incorporate the use of punctuation and conventional spelling as they pick up “mistakes” in their own writing and rewrite words 8

or letters. While they start out writing mainly to record and communicate messages, as you keep reading with them you will notice that they begin to write their own simple stories. As we continued to explore how a child develops these skills, we had an opportunity to ask Allison Willson, Senior Director of Curriculum and Innovation at Stratford School questions about how children are learning to write in school and below we’d like to share her expertise: How do children learn to write, focusing on the act of writing itself and not physical handwriting? To learn the skills to write stories, early learners must not only learn to handle a writing tool, but also learn how to generate ideas (brainstorm),

Writing is a complex skill that develops over time. Though your toddler won’t yet have the ability to write stories, they can certainly engage in experiences that support future reading and writing. Fine motor control and drawing are young children’s first steps toward writing. They will then progress to scribbles meant to mimic handwriting before reaching conventional writing and spelling. You can encourage your budding author to draw pictures that depict stories, their feelings and/or observations of their world. What does the current research say about teaching kids to write and what teaching practices are currently used in schools? Current research suggests that to write stories, young children must learn not only to handle a pencil or other writing device but also to generate ideas, elaborate upon them, and sequence and connect them coherently. Children develop these skills through scaffolded play, storytelling, writing practice, and in conversations – particularly with adults and older children. Knowing what we know about how children acquire these skills, early childhood classrooms should provide frequent opportunities for writing practice throughout the day through play and practice. (e.g., “Let’s create a list for our grocery store today.”). Explain the link between reading and writing. Reading and writing support each other. The more your child does both, the stronger their overall literacy skills will be. At an early age, children thrive on modeled behaviors. The act of listening to stories, poems, and

other texts, provides opportunities for our little ones to experience the writing process. By orally retelling stories, drawing or acting out read alouds, young children understand narrative or story structure (beginning, middle, and end) which they then can apply to their own stories. We often encourage children to retell the stories in their own words or extend this learning by encouraging our young authors to reimagine the ending. How can parents help children learn to write at home? Model. Writing is practical and an incredibly important part of our daily lives. Model for your child ways in which you use writing (e.g., “Let’s create a list for your birthday party! What will we need and who should we invite?”). Provide Time and Space for Drawing and Discussion. Drawing allows little ones to develop their fine motor skills while also expressing their thoughts and feelings. Ask your child

questions about their drawings, for example: “What is the boy/girl doing?”, “Does the house look like ours?”, “Can you tell a story about this picture?”, or “What might be a different ending if you had a chance to rewrite the story?”. You can also write their responses directly on their artwork. Read Together. Reading and writing go hand in hand. As one muscle is built, the other is strengthened. As you read together, you can also talk about what the author did that was so effective, such as: “How did the writing make your child feel?” or “What words or phrases made you feel that way?” Involve Everyone. Invite family members to be a part of your child’s writing journey. Send and receive cards from loved ones near or far. You can also send your child a letter or card once in a while too, so that he/she is reminded of how special they are! Create a family message board in the heart of your home to give and receive notes to the members of your family.

Encourage Inventive Spelling. As your child develops phonological awareness, encourage him/her to do their best to write words on their own based on the sound spelling. Praise the Process. Give specific praise as your child grows in their literacy development. Like any skill, the more time and energy put into it, the better the result. So, make writing skill development part of your family’s mission by encouraging them to talk about everything they’re interested in—and then have them write it down. Make the process fun for them and they will foster a love for writing from an early age on into adulthood. For High School Sophomore, the Future is Bright How many high school students do you know who have published a best-selling novel and still have time to do community service, create art pieces and travel – all while maintaining 4.0 GPA in school?

M

eet high school sophomore London Gow, a passionate learner and successful writer. While London thrives in school now, it wasn’t always that way. Her parents had no doubts about her academic capabilities, but as they had watched her progress through elementary school, they had grown increasingly concerned as they saw their daughter struggle. They knew London was a bright and talented young girl bursting with potential, but her learning style wasn’t conducive to the large classroom setting

she was in, so many of her skills and abilities were left underdeveloped. By the time she reached sixth grade, her parents could see she needed a different type of school environment and decided to switch to Futures Academy with its one-student to oneteacher teaching model. “London, like many of our students, chose to attend Futures Academy because of our one-to-one teaching model and its flexible structure,” said Jeriese Dodd, who has been teaching London English and writing since sixth grade. “Since attending Fu-

tures, London has been able to thrive within its non-traditional school setting and has experienced astronomical growth.” Within a year of switching to Futures Academy, it was evident that London’s passion for learning and creativity had been unleashed when in 7th grade she was assigned an English project on Space. Her research and writing were well received, and the project was a class success. But little did she know this beautiful seed from her teacher Mrs. Dodd would soon be sown and blossom into the inspiration for a young adult science fiction book series called Red Genesis, which London – under her pen name Kira G. – collaborated on with her mother, author Kailin Gow. Published in 2019, Red Genesis became a top 100 Bestseller in Teen Literature on Amazon and #2 Bestseller in Teen Science Fiction. And in March 2021, an agreement was signed by a major production company for it to be optioned as a film. Later in November 2021, The Red Genesis Series became a USA Today Bestselling Series, propelling London to be a USA Today Bestselling Author. In addition to her writing success, London has been commissioned to create a few art pieces for a special collection related to the story. “Needless to say, London and I are very excited about all this... all because of an English project London worked on in 7th grade while attending Futures Academy,” said Kailin. London also enjoys many friendships she has built at Futures. While a little reserved, she is very social and participates in a variety of out of class school activities. London also travels

10

to different states to participate in volunteer experiences, community service, mural paintings, and still has time to complete her homework well enough to earn straight A’s. “Offering flexibility in learning pace and class scheduling have been a huge benefit for London,” Jeriese went on to say. “I think the proof is in the pudding. Few students have the time to write a book; I think that speaks volumes to London’s schedule and her dedication! I think the structure offered at Futures closely parallels a college schedule, preparing students with proper time management well before they attend college.”

HIGH FAT DIET AND PROSTATE CANCER By Robert Pugach, MD

As you are preparing to be with family and enjoy delicious meals, the advice to avoid overeating foods high in fat is especially important.

S

ome nutritional studies are finding that a high-fat diet may fuel spread of prostate cancer. The impact of a man’s diet is another important clinical step in our understanding the causes of prostate cancer. A significant study published in Nature Genetic found, “an aberrant SREBP-dependent lipogenic program promotes metastatic prostate cancer.” This study suggests that dietary fat may feed prostate tumors and help them spread. While we know that obesity has been linked to prostate cancer in some studies over the years, the exact reason has not been clear. We may be closer to an answer from the researchers Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. The study found that “when prostate cancers lose a particular gene, they become tiny fat 16

factories.” The study, done on mice, found that without this gene, prostate cancer spread and metastasized when fed a high fat diet. This preliminary finding suggested that dietary fat can fuel prostate cancer growth. The investigators also used an obesity drug that blocks fat production resulting in a regression of metastatic prostate cancer in mice. While the many of the specific causes of developing prostate cancer are unknown and being researched, the categories of risk factors include:

• • • • •

Genetics Heredity Hormonal influences Dietary issues Environmental factors

It is important to note that I and most experts agree – limiting your intake of sugar rich drinks and processed carbohydrates, and eating more fruits, vegetables, legumes, fiber-rich whole grains and “good” unsaturated fats is a good health decision.

Peter is adamant when he says, “As long as the IRS keeps up with its annual “tax simplification” strategies, you will want to use a professional who understands the constantly changing tax and financial environment.” Peter stresses that “the start of the year is the perfect time for tax planning. It enables us to achieve a good sense of direction and work together with my undivided attention. This is true for any individual, small business, or corporation seeking to become more tax efficient and a better financial consumer.”

ertified Public Accountant Peter D. Prescott is single-minded: “I strive to make each client as tax efficient as possible. Using a client’s entire finances as a framework, we establish major goals and then combine tax savings techniques and professional financial planning to enhance the growth of their money!”

Peter’s background is impressive: A business degree from U.C. Berkeley, a Professional Financial Planning designation from U.C.L.A., a Masters in Taxation from Golden Gate University, large firm accounting experience at Price Waterhouse and the Personal Financial Specialist Designation (PFS) from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Overwhelming technical expertise belie the fact that Peter is a people person. His clients appreciate his professional knowledge of course, but they love him for his down to earth sensibility, wit and humor. As a man who has participated in public speaking venues, stand-up comedy and a few game shows, Peter loves life and is not only dedicated to his profession, but also maintaining a balance of work and play. His most important priority is his own family. His wife Margie is a homemaker and formerly a special education teacher in San Clemente. Having three sons, Peter understands that early planning to meet family goals is critical.

Knowledge of the tax laws is of little value unless they can be applied wisely to fully meet your needs. That is why Peter follows a comprehensive approach combining effective tax savings, advanced financial planning strategies, estate planning and professional investment methodologies. Why allow yourself to become anxious and stressed out about your taxes, retirement, college, or business planning? The best time to begin the process is now. There are still many actions that can be taken to save you money this year and be better positioned for the future. How Can I Tell If I Have Skin Cancer? There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs. 22

L

ook especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.

WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW 1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.

ACTINIC KERATOSIS

An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.

BASAL CELL CARCINOMA

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.

2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life. 3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match? B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin? C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue? D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.

SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.

MELANOMA

Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.

E - Evolution: Has it changed? F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others? 4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine. 23

leads to improved stability, agility and strength. Dusty Dial, owner of three locations in south Orange County, is so convinced you’ll like the group HIIT that after a one-month (12 session minimum) trial, you can still walk away scot free. “If you don’t feel like you’re living a more vibrant, happier, healthier life, then take back all your money and walk away.” A unique offering, to be sure. But an offering Dusty couldn’t turn down when his friend began to develop the Orangetheory Fitness in 2012 and invited him to come along for the ride that would evolve into an international fitness phenomenon.

Orange (Theory) Is the New You

This is Where You Go All Out By Jody Robinson There have been a number of interesting developments in the world of fitness within the last decade. I’m not talking about the Shake Weight, however comical that particular invention is. TRX, kettlebells, even the BOSU Ball joined the ranks of handy equipment to keep on hand when the urge to workout strikes. But we didn’t really hit our stride until Orangetheory Fitness came along.

A dynamic science-backed, metrics-tracked group workout, Orangetheory is designed to produce results 24

without making impossible goals or burning out and walking away from that new, expensive set of weights you purchased on a whim. The idea is to essentially reach your maximum output for the ideal amount of time during the one-hour class. Orangetheory Fitness offerings have particular appeal for someone like me who gets bored of the same routine because no two workouts are the same. The format of the class is divided into three sections: cardio, rowing and strength-training in an ever-changing repertoire of classes. Regardless of your fitness ability, the nature of the high-intensity interval training (HIIT) will leave you out of breath the ultimate aim to reach the “orange zone” which is 84 - 91 percent of your max heart rate for a science-backed range of time. The dynamic mix

“The hardest part of our workouts is showing up - because after that we make it simple for you to push yourself, be your personal best, and give you more.” Results. Confidence. Life. “Because you shouldn’t live to exercise. You should exercise to live.”

BUSINESS SHOWCASE:

BUBBLES MOBILE AUTO DETAIL

By Jody Robinson

There is a specific type of business person I particularly appreciate when utilizing his or her services. One who is detail oriented.

R

yan “Bubbles” Jara is just such a professional. Having been in mobile auto detail business serving Orange County for over 25 years, he must be, and especially since his specialty is restoration and paint correction on classic cars. Bubbles was the plan since the beginning, it seems. “My uncles restore classic vehicles so I grew up in the industry," he says. "It only made sense to one day have a business of my own bringing cars back to their original glory.” But what happens before a car becomes a classic? Those of us that pride ourselves on being detail oriented would perhaps note that a regular car wash and wax are in order. Ryan takes it one step further. Bubbles Mobile Auto Detail comes to

you, and handles all of the heavy lifting - from upholstery cleaning to paint protection. Jara's services include hand wash and wax, interior and exterior detailing, headlight restoration, steam cleaning, ceramic coating, engine bay wash and ... something my minivan could certainly use ... pet hair removal. You name the vehicle, Bubbles will ensure it is looking its finest.

WE COME TO YOU! • Cars • Trucks • RVs

• Boats • Motorcycles • Classic Cars

RV’s, motorcycles, daily drivers, trucks, boats and classic cars. The convenience is unmatched and the product? Well, it’s detailed. And you know I love nothing better.

“Having a passion for the cars I’m servicing takes almost no effort - I know I love this work," he says. "The commitment to excellence and knowledge of the chemical industry gives your car its million-dollar shine.”

HERE’S TO AN IMPROVED 2022 VERSION OF YOU! Looking to boost your health in 2022? An all-natural, scientifically proven method is through the regular usage of infrared saunas.

W

orking at lower temperatures of upwards to 140°F, this variation of dry saunas allows users to sit for longer sessions due to the less-stifling environment their traditional counterparts offer. How is this possible you may ask? Infrared waves only heat what they come into contact with (A.K.A. you), transferring minimal heat to the actual cabin air. This allows for prolonged sessions where users soak all the benefits of whole-body thermotherapy while feeling comfortable and relaxed. Most don’t realize that you already come into contact with infrared heat every day. Our sun is a perfect example, providing warmth via infrared for the planet and all its inhabitants on a daily basis. JNH infrared saunas are able to safely mimic this same heat (minus the harmful UV rays) through the use of their advanced carbon fiber heaters. Infrared waves are directional, meaning that you would need to be sitting in front of the heaters to truly experience the therapeutic healing power of infrared therapy. At JNH Lifestyles, we’ve made sure our infrared saunas have heaters placed throughout the cabin, so you’re completely enveloped with warmth. Our unique heating method is actually one of the major differences between Finnish and steam style saunas; who rely on heating the air within the cabin first, which then transfers its heat onto you. In the case of infrared waves, they target your body directly, penetrating and heating you from the inside out, rather than wasting its energy on the cabin air. Infrared can be found on the electromagnetic spectrum with many other 40

wavelengths, such as visible light and radio waves. When you look specifically at infrared on this spectrum, scientists have divided it into 3 subsections varying by the length of their waves (wavelength): near, mid and far infrared. Each penetrate the body at different depths, allowing for their own unique health benefits: Near Infrared (NIR) - Promotes cell health/regeneration, wound healing, skin revitalization and can lessen inflammation. NIR therapy significantly speeds up the natural healing process and even lead to the pre-injury level of health in some people. Based on

research by NASA, data showed that musculoskeletal wounds improved by over 40%, while wound size decreased by up to 36%. Mid Infrared (MIR) - Landing in between far and near infrared, it penetrates the body deeper than NIR, but not as deep as far. MIR can aid with pain relief, inflammation and decrease healing time overall. It can also potentially help with weight loss and expands blood vessels to increase circulation. Far Infrared (FIR) - Penetrates the deepest of the 3, reaching muscle

and fat tissue. Because of its noninvasive reach, it can heal the body from the inside without causing any damage to the skin and internal organs.

with just 30 minutes of moderate-intensive activity, such as a brisk walk. You’d be surprised as to what could potentially be considered a workout if you just apply yourself a little more. For instance, when looking for a parking spot, pick the furthest location from the building. Use stairs instead of elevators. Instead of using the dishwasher, wash and dry by hand. These examples may seem like trivial tasks, but for someone who hasn’t been active in a while, baby steps matter. BRONWYN GORMAN | Decorating Den Interiors By Jody Robinson

Over a half-century ago, a former fabric salesman named Steve Bursten had a vision: an unparalleled interior design catalogue that would match creatives to homes across the US and Canada.

O

riginally known as American Drapery Consultants, Steve took his dream to the streets, and within a single year, the first franchise was born. Today, with designers scattered across the states and our neighbor to the north, Decorating Den Interiors (DDI) can tackle a single room or build an entirely new home with you. To your style, with your specifications, using the best product possible. An expert in her field, Interior Designer Bronwyn Gorman is more than a creative mind at DDI. Bringing a 50

treasure trove of style to the table and a pocketful of tricks and tips to build out the most “you” space possible, her methodologies are deliberate and dedicated. “I truly believe that a home should reflect the people who live in it, not the person who designed it.”

“A house isn’t just a home, it is your refuge, your sanctuary at the end of the day, and responsible for ushering you into each new one," she says. "I want to promote health and happiness with my designs - from the ease of process to the details in your favorite room.”

A longtime Orange County resident, Bronwyn embraces the unique lifestyle of its population, and the indoor-outdoor spaces that reflect it. Where else can you hit the waves and the ski hill in the same day?

Bronwyn's business, a reflection of her personal values and ideals, takes the leap from outstanding customer service into genuine respect and care for her clients. “I’m passionate and motivated to understand each individual I have the pleasure of working

with." And it shows in her projects. From bedding to window treatments, furniture to light fixtures, no detail is too small. Once a budget is reached and agreed upon, a final consultation and presentation come to life, and the design of your dreams begins to take shape. Bronwyn’s design services couldn’t be more thorough or more convenient. Because she comes to you, she is able to see the lighting and get a feel for the flow/how things work in your home. “Feeling like you’re understood and falling in love with your space each time you walk through the door don’t have to be mutually exclusive," says Bronwyn. "It's in our attention to detail and customization that we can truly make a difference, as we can offer options and resources to create a room like no other, one that is uniquely you."

South Coast Shutter and Shades

O

perating honestly and with integrity has served as the foundation for the continued success of the Laguna Niguel-based South Coast Shutter and Shades for over 32 years. Owners Tom and Donna Schuster launched their own company after realizing that “on our own we would be able to offer quality products in an honest environment to our customers, as well as servicing the products we sell.”

Tom and Donna, credit their success to date to the quality of customer service they and their team give their customers, which in turn creates a wonderful repeat and referral business. “Although there may be providers of similar products, there is no one that can match our superior customer service – from showing up on time, making precise measurements and flawless installations - and with a professional ‘can do’ attitude,” says Donna.

Specializing in custom shutters, blinds (mini, faux, wood, vertical), cellular shades, woven woods, plantation and security shutters and everything in between, Tom and Donna offer free in-home consultations for design as well as measuring, they always include free professional installation and prefer to bring all of the samples to each client’s home to go over the assorted styles and many color options to suit each home’s interior and its homeowner’s unique lifestyle.

Tom adds that “our pricing with unbeatable discounts, sales support and the fact that we offer our customers an in-house design team at no additional charge is the first step in setting us apart from our competition. I am proud to say that we have built a reputation in the business for having the highest quality, best beauty, fit and finish and value available. All of our products come with a lifetime warranty.”

“We listen to you and then incorporate your ideas with ours to design your custom shutters, blinds or shades,” says Tom. “Our portfolios and samples are very extensive, so you will be able to envision how your windows are going to look when complete." 52

A 5-Star Yelp rated company, South Coast Shutter and Shades boasts scores of glowing testimonials online, including Debora R of Laguna Niguel who writes "Donna and Tom are amazing! Great products, great prices, great service.I've used them twice for two different businesses and I could not be happier. Donna makes suggestions based on what I tell her

my needs are and she has been spot on with her recommendations. Installations by Tom are quick and easy. Highly recommended!" Another reviewer, Doug W. of Mission Viejo posted that "From the first call, I knew I was dealing with a reputable, experienced, HONEST company. Donna and Tom are absolute PROS and obviously take pride in their work … Their price was very competitive. Also, what they quote is what you pay - keep that in mind when talking to the "other guys" whose price seems to go up and up. All appointments including install were FAST. The installation was flawless. I had a question later that evening about my motorized shades and they called me back IMMEDIATELY. My impression is that I could call them 5 or 10 years from now and they would just as helpful."

Loaded Inheritance: Safe Gun Storage, Ownership and Disposal with California Gun Services By Ann Laurence

M

y grandparents owned a beautiful three bedroom casita in Solana Beach. Just up the road from the train station, their home was built in the twenties, and renovated completely when I was in high school. When my grandfather passed away, I moved in with my grandma, doing chores around the house for her and helping to maintain the garden. One day, I was looking for my grandfather’s whetstone, to sharpen an old pair of shears, and I stumbled across his Colt Python 357 Magnum. I had to look it up - I thought it might be a relic from one of the movies he worked on in the 50’s, but according to my grandma, it was just “one of those things your grandpa just insisted on having.” Jeff McCabe has gotten more of his fair share of calls from people like myself, who accidentally come across family firearms in their home and don’t have the first idea of what to do with them. The owner of California Gun Services, Jeff is in the business of safe gun storage, ownership and disposal. The first step? Following California gun laws. I had zero clue that by driving the Colt to the Army Navy to try and turn it in I’d be breaking a couple laws. According to Jeff there are laws restricting gifting or selling a gun, receiving a gun, borrowing a gun, transporting a gun, even storing guns. New laws come out every year, and it is almost impossible for anyone, even aficionados to keep up with them. Jeff and his team work closely with local law enforcement to ensure the process is easy and safe. 54

My grandma hadn’t touched the revolver in years, though my grandfather had made sure she shot it at some canned tomatoes on a desert trip when they were younger. “I’m afraid the grandkids might find it,” she told me that day. “I’d feel safer without it.” A sentiment shared by Jeff’s friends, family and fellow church parishioners - many of whom have sought his assistance over the years to ensure the proper storage or disposal of firearms they found themselves in possession of upon the passing of a loved one.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

What initially started as a favor for a friend has grown into a bonafide side business as word has spread about Jeff’s particular skill set and confidence in handling firearms. As the owner of the Orange-based One Way Painting, Jeff often encountered situations whereby he would come across a firearm when moving furniture around for a client prior to starting a painting project. “Many times, the firearm belonged to my client’s father, grandfather or late husband and she never touched it because she was afraid of guns, but didn’t know how to get rid of it safely. So many times these guns are loaded and just stuck in a nightstand or stored under the bed.” Raised in a family that had firearms for hunting and sporting, Jeff was taught early on how to handle, be respectful and always be safe when handling firearms. I believe that we as Americans have a great privilege to be able to own a firearm, but with that comes an even greater responsi-

bility to not only protect ourselves legally by complying with Federal and State laws, but to protect ourselves, our neighbors and most importantly, our children from all possible dangers associated with firearms.” San Clemente resident Rhonda Murphy couldn’t agree more. “There are many things to deal with when a loved one dies. In 2010, when cleaning out my husband’s closet, I came across several of his guns. I didn’t want to keep them and was unsure of what to do with them. My daughters didn’t want the guns and I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of storing them as my grandkids are often at my house. A friend suggested I should call Jeff. He was very nice, easy to talk with, trustworthy and knowledgable. He came to my house, checked all the guns to make sure they were unloaded and removed them. Jeff also told me that one of the guns was a collector’s item and was able to sell it for me. One less thing to have to worry about. I can’t recommend Jeff enough.” As part of their auditing procedures, California Gun Services gives clients the option of a Voluntary Registration Form (in the case where the weapon was inherited). Many of Jeff’s clients are like my grandma who just prefers that the gun is destroyed. Jeff holds a Federal Firearm License and as such, is able to take possession of firearms without a Gun Transfer. He can also inspect firearms to ensure they are still in working order, and even tell you if the gun, or guns, you have are California Compliant. “Most people are unaware that firearms that were purchased legally from a gun shop just a year ago may now be illegal in California,” says Jeff. “If we find a firearm that is out of compliance with the law, you’ll receive solid advice on how to make it compliant, sell it out of state, or potentially dispose of it. Our process is approved and certified by local law enforcement, it’s legal, safe and adheres to all state and federal firearms laws. “Since firearms last more than a lifetime, families often have small and large collections of guns in their home. Knowing what you have and what to do with those firearms is important. Whether it’s from a death in the family, inheritance, or just a need for clearing out some that you know you will never use, we can help. Following California gun laws is essential. We come to you. It’s a safe, easy and professional process.”

California Gun Services’ processes are approved and certified by local law enforcement and adheres to all state and federal firearms laws for the following services:

GUN AUDIT

Jeff will come to you and inspect your firearms to make sure they are in proper working order and that they are California Compliant. If your firearm is not compliant with the California Law, you will receive solid advice on how to make it compliant or possibly dispose or sell it out of state.

GUN DISPOSAL

If a firearm is found to be unsafe to use, cannot be repaired and has no historical value. California Gun Services will permanently destroy it by torching the receiver or frame into three parts or cutting it with a saw into five parts. Jeff will document this with photos and log it for the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and email you the proof of destruction.

GUN TRANSFERS

Private Party Transfers happen between two individuals and will need to take place at a Federal Firearm Licensed Dealer. Since this needs to be done at a Gun Shop, Jeff cannot offer this as an in-home service. If you have inherited or legally obtain a firearm, he can provide you with a Voluntary Registration form or you can download it from the California Department of Justice which is NOT required to do at a gun shop. California Gun Services has a Federal Firearm License and can legally come to you and take possession of a firearm without a Gun Transfer.

GUN PURCHASES OF UNWANTED FIREARMS OR COLLECTIONS

California Gun Services will come to you and appraise a single gun or an entire collection of any size. You will receive an explanation of how guns are legally sold and transferred. California Gun Services can then make you a fair market value offer and/or explain how a gun can be put up for sale on consignment.

AMMUNITION AUDIT To connect with Jeff directly, call (714) 639-9608 or for more information, visit CaliforniaGunServices.com.

California Gun Services will make sure you are using the right ammunition for the firearms that you have and that it is legal in the State of California. Jeff will inspect the ammunition to make sure that it has been stored correctly, is in good condition and will ensure that the ammunition is being stored properly, using the right type of container and stored in the right location in your home. 55

DOHENY BIKE The Fastest Growing E-Bike Company in Dana Point

By Jody Robinson

You might be surprised to learn what the country’s fastest growing industry is and it’s not RV sales, in spite of a year of lockdown. But the demand to get on the road is certainly fueling the drive toward recreational activities in North America, and e-bikes are running away with the market.

F

ueled by demand from both Canada and the U.S., e-bikes are looking at an annual growth rate of close to 11% over the next few years, marching right along with a booming housing market and burgeoning infrastructure development. Targeting not only recent retirees, but enthusiasts of all ages looking to stay

active, get outside or simply prefer to tool around town on an E-bike - the evolved and infinitely more exciting electric iteration of the traditional two-wheeler. While E-bike purveyors are seemingly on every corner, few have experienced the explosion in interest and growth locally like Doheny Bike - the fastest growing E-bike company in Dana Point. This is perhaps due in large measure to the popularity, versatility,

56

utility and affordability of the company’s Fold N’ Go collection - available in a array of colors and profiles. But undoubtedly in equal measure is the mission of its co-owners - Jason Spates and Micah Meiring - to “give back to the community.” Doheny itself boasts a robust outdoor history. Killer Dana, the aptly named freight-train-thick swell brought in surfers and developers alike. Hoping to keep the community close to the land and sea that brought it prosperity originally seemed logical for Jason, Micah and their team, working with the City of Dana Point recently to hand out 75 complimentary helmets, scooters, and skateboards. “Dana Point is an amazing community, and we want to help more kids enjoy it safely. Doheny Bike is donating a Doheny EZ Folding bike to Pet Project’s biggest fundraiser of the year on September 19th called Pet Project Foundation: Roaring for Rescues! Proceeds will benefit the animals at the San Clemente-Dana Point Animal Shelter. “We recognized the opportunity to give back, to contribute to our community that shaped our childhood, and it felt natural to encourage mobility and personal freedom when the pandemic had taken so much of it away.” Jason and Micah are a couple of local Dana Point dads, lucky enough to have lived near the worldfamous Doheny Beach surf spot their entire lives. “Our freedom was nearly unlimited as kids in the 1970’s and 80’s - we wanted our own kids to be as mobile as we were.” The idea of access and freedom have long been associated with the bicycle, and Doheny Bike believes in

“It should be fun, but we’re also thinking beyond fun to community, individual expression and the ability to remain mobile.” sending its patrons out on adventures to places unknown, where they might not have ventured before. They set out to provide an affordable solution for everyday mobility. “With the average buyer’s budget in mind, we wanted a functional riding experience that is not trendy, awkward and limited to your hometown,” says Micah. “Creating the agility of the Fold N’ Go anywhere design, we have provided a solution to buyers that want to travel in a smaller car with electric bikes and ultimately extend their outdoor adventures.” As parents, Jason and Micah stress the importance of safety, and encourage all riders to be over 16, along with the importance of sizing the bike

out, wearing a helmet, and meeting minimum requirements to ride the bikes safely on the road. “It should be fun, but we’re also thinking beyond fun, to community, individual expression, and the ability to remain mobile.” On a single charge, you can ride up to 50 miles. Put a basket on the back and you’re ready for the store or farmer’s market. “I wanted something better than traffic in my car and I just knew that the options I had to help my community needed to be affordable and reliable.” With a background in commercial truck leasing and loans, and an early pandemic ride on his nephew’s electric scooter, genius was born. “There’s something about being out in the fresh air that made a great start to the day.” The recent cycling boom couldn’t agree more.
