Kit Marlowe, The Beatles, Einstein, Teemu Selanne (for the Orange County natives). Ken Earwood might not be on your shortlist yet, but as the President of Titan Financial and Insurance Services, his expertise is of the influence you’ll want when looking towards retirement.
Sixteen years ago, Ken started Titan Financial & Insurance Services, Inc. in Huntington Beach and has operated in the ensuing years since in the same location. But the journey to opening his own firm began more than two decades ago, with simple work ethic. Much like the world-builders, “my parents taught me everything about starting from the ground up. My Dad was an electrical engineer, and worked for the same company for 48 years. My mom was an entrepreneur. Everything was earned.” A graduate from Long Beach State with a degree in Business Marketing, Ken jumped into the industry feet first, with a job at one of the nation’s largest brokerage firms. With his college sweetheart by his side, loving his day-to-day was easy, and remains so today. Without her support, we couldn’t have come this far.
“Everyone remembers what it’s like not to have money. Like when you were a young married couple just starting out. Ideas & Insights: Helping Your Child Develop Strong Writing Skills

As adults, we write for a reason: to write a letter, to make a list, to leave a note, to communicate with a friend in a letter or e-mail or to create a story. Children learn to write most easily when they write with purpose too, rather than being told what they should write about.
Like all other things, learning to write is a process. When children realize that writing communicates meaning, they begin to experiment with it and usually start by using scribbles on a page. From there they start to use symbols that look like letters and then they use real letters although they may go back and forth using real letters and their own symbols. These are exciting first steps, because it shows that children are aware of a difference between drawing and writing and you can support them by asking what the writing says.
Over time, as children are exposed to examples of writing in their environment and in the books you read with them, they gradually incorporate the use of punctuation and conventional spelling as they pick up “mistakes” in their own writing and rewrite words
or letters. While they start out writing mainly to record and communicate messages, as you keep reading with them you will notice that they begin to write their own simple stories.
As we continued to explore how a child develops these skills, we had an opportunity to ask Allison Willson, Senior Director of Curriculum and Innovation at Stratford School questions about how children are learning to write in school and below we’d like to share her expertise:
How do children learn to write, focusing on the act of writing itself and not physical handwriting?
To learn the skills to write stories, early learners must not only learn to handle a writing tool, but also learn how to generate ideas (brainstorm),
elaborate upon their ideas, and learn to sequence and connect them together. Young writers learn to develop these skills over time through play, storytelling, writing practice, and in modeled conversations with adults or older peers.
When should children start learning to write?
Writing is a complex skill that develops over time. Though your toddler won’t yet have the ability to write stories, they can certainly engage in experiences that support future reading and writing. Fine motor control and drawing are young children’s first steps toward writing. They will then progress to scribbles meant to mimic handwriting before reaching conventional writing and spelling. You can encourage your budding author to draw pictures that depict stories, their feelings and/or observations of their world.
What does the current research say about teaching kids to write and what teaching practices are currently used in schools?
Current research suggests that to write stories, young children must learn not only to handle a pencil or other writing device but also to generate ideas, elaborate upon them, and sequence and connect them coherently. Children develop these skills through scaffolded play, storytelling, writing practice, and in conversations – particularly with adults and older children. Knowing what we know about how children acquire these skills, early childhood classrooms should provide frequent opportunities for writing practice throughout the day through play and practice. (e.g., “Let’s create a list for our grocery store today.”).
Explain the link between reading and writing.
Reading and writing support each other. The more your child does both, the stronger their overall literacy skills will be. At an early age, children thrive on modeled behaviors. The act of listening to stories, poems, and
other texts, provides opportunities for our little ones to experience the writing process. By orally retelling stories, drawing or acting out read alouds, young children understand narrative or story structure (beginning, middle, and end) which they then can apply to their own stories. We often encourage children to retell the stories in their own words or extend this learning by encouraging our young authors to reimagine the ending.
How can parents help children learn to write at home?
Model. Writing is practical and an incredibly important part of our daily lives. Model for your child ways in which you use writing (e.g., “Let’s create a list for your birthday party! What will we need and who should we invite?”).
Provide Time and Space for Draw ing and Discussion. little ones to develop tor skills while also expressing their thoughts and feelings.

Read Together. Reading and writing go hand in hand. As one muscle is built, the other is strengthened. As you read together, you can also talk about what the author did that was so effective, such as: “How did the writing make your child feel?” or “What words or phrases made you feel that way?”
Involve Everyone. Invite family members to be a part of your child’s writing journey. Send and receive cards from
Encourage Inventive Spelling. As your child develops phonological awareness, encourage him/her to do their best to write words on their own based on the sound spelling.
Praise the Process Give specific praise as your child grows in their literacy development.
Like any skill, the more time and energy put into it, the better the result. So, make writing skill development part of your family’s mission by encouraging them to talk about everything they’re interested in—and then have them write it down. Make the process fun for them and they will foster a love for writing from an early age on into adulthood.
For High School Sophomore, the Future is Bright
How many high school students do you know who have published a best-selling novel and still have time to do community service, create art pieces and travel – all while maintaining 4.0 GPA in school?
Meet high school sophomore London Gow, a passionate learner and successful writer. While London thrives in school now, it wasn’t always that way.
Her parents had no doubts about her academic capabilities, but as they had watched her progress through elementary school, they had grown increasingly concerned as they saw their daughter struggle. They knew London was a bright and talented young girl bursting with potential, but her learning style wasn’t conducive to the large classroom setting
she was in, so many of her skills and abilities were left underdeveloped. By the time she reached sixth grade, her parents could see she needed a different type of school environment and decided to switch to Futures Academy with its one-student to oneteacher teaching model.

But little did she know this beautiful seed from her teacher Mrs. Dodd would soon be sown and blossom into the inspiration for a young adult science fiction book series called Red Genesis, which London – under her pen name Kira G. – collaborated on with her mother, author Kailin Gow.
Published in 2019, Red Genesis became a top 100 Bestseller in Teen Literature on Amazon and #2 Bestseller in Teen Science Fiction. And in March 2021, an agreement was signed by a major production company for it to be optioned as a film. Later in November 2021, The Red Genesis Series became a USA Today Bestselling Series, propelling London to be a USA Today Bestselling Author. In addition to her writing success, London has been commissioned to create a few art pieces for a special collection related to the story.
“Needless to say, London and I are very excited about all this... all because of an English project London worked on in 7th grade while attending Futures Academy,” said Kailin.
London also enjoys many friendships she has built at Futures. While a little reserved, she is very social and participates in a variety of out of class school activities. London also travels
to different states to participate in volunteer experiences, community service, mural paintings, and still has time to complete her homework well enough to earn straight A’s.

As you are preparing to be with family and enjoy delicious meals, the advice to avoid overeating foods high in fat is especially important.
Some nutritional studies are finding that a high-fat diet may fuel spread of prostate cancer. The impact of a man’s diet is another important clinical step in our understanding the causes of prostate cancer. A significant study published in Nature Genetic found, “an aberrant SREBP-dependent lipogenic program promotes metastatic prostate cancer.” This study suggests that dietary fat may feed prostate tumors and help them spread.
While we know that obesity has been linked to prostate cancer in some studies over the years, the exact reason has not been clear. We may be closer to an answer from the researchers Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. The study found that “when prostate cancers lose a particular gene, they become tiny fat
factories.” The study, done on mice, found that without this gene, prostate cancer spread and metastasized when fed a high fat diet.
This preliminary finding suggested that dietary fat can fuel prostate cancer growth. The investigators also used an obesity drug that blocks fat production resulting in a regression of metastatic prostate cancer in mice.
While the many of the specific causes of developing prostate cancer are unknown and being researched, the categories of risk factors include:
• Genetics
• Heredity
• Hormonal influences
• Dietary issues
• Environmental factors
It is important to note that I and most experts agree – limiting your intake of sugar rich drinks and processed carbohydrates, and eating more fruits, vegetables, legumes, fiber-rich whole grains and “good” unsaturated fats is a good health decision.

How Can I Tell If I Have Skin Cancer?
There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.
Look especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.
ACTINIC KERATOSIS
An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.
SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.
BASAL CELL CARCINOMA
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.
MELANOMA
Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.
WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW
1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.
2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life.
3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling
A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?
B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin?
C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?
D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.
E - Evolution: Has it changed?
F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others?
4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

There have been a number of interesting developments in the world of fitness within the last decade. I’m not talking about the Shake Weight, however comical that particular invention is. Ryan “Bubbles” Jara is just such a professional. Having been in mobile auto detail business serving Orange County for over 25 years, he must be, and especially since his specialty is restoration and paint correction on classic cars. Bubbles was the plan since the beginning, it seems.

Loaded Inheritance: Safe Gun Storage, Ownership and Disposal with California Gun Services

My grandparents owned a beautiful three bedroom casita in Solana Beach. Just up the road from the train station, their home was built in the twenties, and renovated completely when I was in high school. When my grandfather passed away, I moved in with my grandma, doing chores around the house for her and helping to maintain the garden. One day, I was looking for my grandfather’s whetstone, to sharpen an old pair of shears, and I stumbled across his Colt Python 357 Magnum. I had to look it up - I thought it might be a relic from one of the movies he worked on in the 50’s, but according to my grandma, it was just “one of those things your grandpa just insisted on having.”
Jeff McCabe has gotten more of his fair share of calls from people like myself, who accidentally come across family firearms in their home and don’t have the first idea of what to do with them. The owner of California Gun Services, Jeff is in the business of safe gun storage, ownership and disposal. The first step? Following California gun laws. I had zero clue that by driving the Colt to the Army Navy to try and turn it in I’d be breaking a couple laws. According to Jeff there are laws restricting gifting or selling a gun, receiving a gun, borrowing a gun, transporting a gun, even storing guns. New laws come out every year, and it is almost impossible for anyone, even aficionados to keep up with them. Jeff and his team work closely with local law enforcement to ensure the process is easy and safe.
My grandma hadn’t touched the revolver in years, though my grandfather had made sure she shot it at some canned tomatoes on a desert trip when they were younger. “I’m afraid the grandkids might find it,” she told me that day. “I’d feel safer without it.” A sentiment shared by Jeff’s friends, family and fellow church parishioners - many of whom have sought his assistance over the years to ensure the proper storage or disposal of firearms they found themselves in possession of upon the passing of a loved one.
HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
What initially started as a favor for a friend has grown into a bonafide side business as word has spread about Jeff’s particular skill set and confidence in handling firearms. As the owner of the Orange-based One Way Painting, Jeff often encountered situations whereby he would come across a firearm when moving furniture around for a client prior to starting a painting project. “Many times, the firearm belonged to my client’s father, grandfather or late husband and she never touched it because she was afraid of guns, but didn’t know how to get rid of it safely. So many times these guns are loaded and just stuck in a nightstand or stored under the bed.”
Raised in a family that had firearms for hunting and sporting, Jeff was taught early on how to handle, be respectful and always be safe when handling firearms. I believe that we as Americans have a great privilege to be able to own a firearm, but with that comes an even greater responsi-
bility to not only protect ourselves legally by complying with Federal and State laws, but to protect ourselves, our neighbors and most importantly, our children from all possible dangers associated with firearms.”
San Clemente resident Rhonda Murphy couldn’t agree more. “There are many things to deal with when a loved one dies. In 2010, when cleaning out my husband’s closet, I came across several of his guns. I didn’t want to keep them and was unsure of what to do with them. My daughters didn’t want the guns and I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of storing them as my grandkids are often at my house. A friend suggested I should call Jeff. He was very nice, easy to talk with, trustworthy and knowledgable. He came to my house, checked all the guns to make sure they were unloaded and removed them. Jeff also told me that one of the guns was a collector’s item and was able to sell it for me. One less thing to have to worry about. I can’t recommend Jeff enough.”
As part of their auditing procedures, California Gun Services gives clients the option of a Voluntary Registration Form (in the case where the weapon was inherited). Many of Jeff’s clients are like my grandma who just prefers that the gun is destroyed. Jeff holds a Federal Firearm License and as such, is able to take possession of firearms without a Gun Transfer. He can also inspect firearms to ensure they are still in working order, and even tell you if the gun, or guns, you have are California Compliant.
“Most people are unaware that firearms that were purchased legally from a gun shop just a year ago may now be illegal in California,” says Jeff. “If we find a firearm that is out of compliance with the law, you’ll receive solid advice on how to make it compliant, sell it out of state, or potentially dispose of it. Our process is approved and certified by local law enforcement, it’s legal, safe and adheres to all state and federal firearms laws.
“Since firearms last more than a lifetime, families often have small and large collections of guns in their home. Knowing what you have and what to do with those firearms is important. Whether it’s from a death in the family, inheritance, or just a need for clearing out some that you know you will never use, we can help. Following California gun laws is essential. We come to you. It’s a safe, easy and professional process.”

GUN AUDIT
Jeff will come to you and inspect your firearms to make sure they are in proper working order and that they are California Compliant. If your firearm is not compliant with the California Law, you will receive solid advice on how to make it compliant or possibly dispose or sell it out of state.
GUN DISPOSAL
If a firearm is found to be unsafe to use, cannot be repaired and has no historical value. California Gun Services will permanently destroy it by torching the receiver or frame into three parts or cutting it with a saw into five parts. Jeff will document this with photos and log it for the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and email you the proof of destruction.
GUN TRANSFERS
Private Party Transfers happen between two individuals and will need to take place at a Federal Firearm Licensed Dealer. Since this needs to be done at a Gun Shop, Jeff cannot offer this as an in-home service. If you have inherited or legally obtain a firearm, he can provide you with a Voluntary Registration form or you can download it from the California Department of Justice which is NOT required to do at a gun shop. California Gun Services has a Federal Firearm License and can legally come to you and take possession of a firearm without a Gun Transfer.

Doheny Bike is donating a Doheny EZ Folding bike to Pet Project’s biggest fundraiser of the year on September 19th called Pet Project Foundation: Roaring for Rescues! Proceeds will benefit the animals at the San Clemente-Dana Point Animal Shelter.
“We recognized the opportunity to give back, to contribute to our community that shaped our childhood, and it felt natural to encourage mobility and personal freedom when the pandemic had taken so much of it away.” Jason and Micah are a couple of local Dana Point dads, lucky enough to have lived near the worldfamous Doheny Beach surf spot their entire lives. “Our freedom was nearly unlimited as kids in the 1970’s and 80’s - we wanted our own kids to be as mobile as we were.”

“With the average buyer’s budget in mind, we wanted a functional riding experience that is not trendy, awkward and limited to your hometown,” says Micah. “Creating the agility of the Fold N’ Go anywhere design, we have provided a solution to buyers that want to travel in a smaller car with electric bikes and ultimately extend their outdoor adventures.”
As parents, Jason and Micah stress the importance of safety, and encourage all riders to be over 16, along with the importance of sizing the bike
out, wearing a helmet, and meeting minimum requirements to ride the bikes safely on the road.

Put a basket on the back and you’re ready for the store or farmer’s market. “I wanted something better than traffic in my car and I just knew that the options I had to help my community needed to be affordable and reliable.”
With a background in commercial truck leasing and loans, and an early pandemic ride on his nephew’s electric scooter, genius was born. “There’s something about being out in the fresh air that made a great start to the day.” The recent cycling boom couldn’t agree more.
