Charlotte native Anthony Hamilton continues to leave his mark by helping others in Charlotte. You can read more about him and his musical success. We also share with you outstanding attributes of Greg Holmes, an outstanding businessman who makes a difference everyday with his family, by helping others and in his business Window Source of the Carolinas.

Making the men feel at home is important so we show a wonderful home on the golf course that would be perfect as a hang out for any man, his family and friends. However, when he wants to hit the road with his guys we lay out ideas for a road trip to Hilton Head Island with time to fellowship while golfing and enjoying a change in scenery.

We know most men don’t like spending too much time in the kitchen but they love to grill outdoors so we offer suggestions for them to display their manly skills cooking over fire.

Be thankful for the men in our city and enjoy some good times with them South Charlotte!

The PGA Championship Made its Return to Quail

Hollow for its 107th Edition

It was the second time the PGA of America’s premier event - one of golf’s four major championships - was played at Quail Hollow. The PGA Championship is the second major championship in golf’s annual rotation, and perennially features the strongest field in the men’s game based on the Official World Golf Rankings. Known for dramatic finishes and notable champions, the Wanamaker Trophy—which has been awarded to the winner since 1916—is inscribed with the names of some of golf’s greatest.

The scenery was beautiful all week and we were fortunate to witness it. Fun was had by everyone, especially the 2025 winner, Scottie Scheffler and his family!

More Than 300 Guests Attended the Alzheimer’s Association’s Western North Carolina Chapter’s Annual Charlotte Memory Gala

This year’s event, held at The Westin Charlotte, raised over $700,000 for Alzheimer’s research, education and quality care. This marks a 17% increase over last year’s total, making it a record-breaking event chaired by Steve and Dee Dee Leeolou. The event featured a silent auction and a live auction including an in-home dinner experience from Cordon Bleu chef Christopher Zion who shared his personal connection to his father’s diagnosis.

Guests enjoyed a seated dinner, and live music by Musically Yours and The Herringbones. Symbolic mission moments included a touching video highlighting Carter Grine, diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at the age of 58, three years into his marriage to Cate Mills.

This year’s Award of Excellence was presented to Pat McKee and his wife Julie Russon, owners of McKee Homes, for their decade-long commitment to the Alzheimer’s Association in honor of Pat’s father, Joe McKee, who battled Alzheimer’s for ten years. The couple has pledged to raise and donate a cumulative total of $1 million over the next few years.

Has Always Made A Difference

A 90th Birthday Recognition For His Gifts To Us Hugh McColl

Writers:

Effie Russell and Edie Marshall
Photography: Grant Baldwin Photography, Charlotte Center City Partners, Walter Hood and the McColl Center for Art and Innovation

There’s a new ‘Nest’ at the Square in the new park created to recognize the ‘difference maker’ in our city, Mr. Hugh McColl. The striking new public space, a $14 million project, includes a towering 56-foot art installation at Trade and Tryon streets. It was created to replace the former Thomas Polk Park. The new ‘pocket park’ is a small token to recognize Mr. McColl’s accomplishments and contributions to Charlotte. The park opening this year was especially appropriate since it coincided with McColl’s 90th birthday.

The ‘Nest’ is the artwork that hangs tall as the park’s centerpiece and has 50 glowing cylinders suspended above the trees and between the buildings. Water flows through a mirror-like pool below, while fresh gardens with flowers and plants circle the main installation in the less than an acre-sized space.

Donors and contributors for the park project showed so much appreciation for the tribute concept to Mr. McColl’s park with gifts received exceeding the original budget amount of $10 million by $4 million. The names of those who donated are on the wall displaying the Park’s name and details on the park’s back wall. The targeted fundraising excess will be used for future upgrades and ongoing maintenance. Charlotte City Center Partners and a committee of community leaders orchestrated the fundraising campaign leading to the broad support.

Charlotte roots run deep in the design of the park. Walter Hood, a renowned artist is the creative force behind the presentation. He grew up in Charlotte’s Hidden Valley and helped to shape the space along with Bolton and Menk, local landscape architects. Walter is now a landscape architect and art designer with a studio and living in Oakland, CA. He is another example of how Charlotte has produced some of the best! His vision uses interconnected cables and lights to show how our city dwellers link together. This is a true display of how Mr. McColl linked our community together to

accomplish so much. The park’s location at the square is the most appropriate place for Mr. McColl’s landmark recognition since it brings together citizens from all directions into the city; from the north, south, east and west. This concept is so idyllic of what he has been about. The park aims to honor Charlotte’s history while recognizing McColl’s contributions for shaping and developing the city. At the same time it shows how the city can forge ahead into the future with inspiration for all. Charlotteans and visitors alike will find benches, chairs and a splash pad to beat the heat during warm days. Spectacular lights will illuminate the sky above the park at night to enhance evening experiences.

The park site sits in the shadow of Bank of America’s 60-story building at the Square. As CEO, McColl led the company through mergers from NCNB to NationsBank and then to Bank of America which is the bank that exists today. Hugh McColl is a visionary who transformed Charlotte along with banking. His name is synonymous with ambition, innovation and transformation in the world of banking. His legacy is one of bold leadership with relentless pursuit of growth which led to the meteoric rise of Bank of America. His story is about vision, determination and the reshaping of the financial landscape in all of America. He also helped business owners, including a team member of this publication with her previous business. McColl Park is just a small example of the recognition due to him.

Mr. McColl has always been about more than just dollars and cents. As a philanthropist, he has always given so much to the Charlotte community and he deserves a lot of accolades. He has sharply recognized the need for better business in our city and at the same time the need for helping others to live better lives. After driving by a burned out church on Tryon Street many times, Mr. McColl decided to bring it back to life. The once 500 seat church was built in 1926, repurposed in 1981 into a community center but fell victim to a fire in 1985. Because of his recognition to save the church building

Walter Hood

and his love for art, he bought the property and assembled a team to design and build needed space for artists to work, create and thrive in our community. It takes a special man to recognize a need, take necessary action to do something about it and achieve successful results to get it done. The burned out church is now the McColl Center for Art and Innovation and its 25th Year was celebrated this year, in 2025. Today, it is a hub for creativity and a catalyst for growth. The McColl Center is dedicated to positioning artists first, by supporting them with freedom throughout their careers and providing subsidized studios, access to modern equipment and tools, entrepreneurship programs, and 5,000 square feet of gallery space to exhibit their works with the ability to sell them. Thanks to Mr. McColl, the Center has been a haven for artists who have come from around the world

to Charlotte to fully and freely turn their dreams into realities. The McColl Center has also become a significant art asset in our Charlotte community for citizens and visitors to explore and appreciate.

There are so many stories to tell about Mr. McColl and how he has made a difference in our city. We’ve only shared a few with you here but we are so proud to give him his flowers and recognize him with all praise and gratitude while he is still with us. We are so thankful for the gift of the man that God delivered to us in Charlotte, and we can’t wait to see what he does next.

TheCroonerSoulful Loves South Charlotte Anthony Hamilton

Gives Back to His Hometown

Writers: Melinda Burris and Effie Russell

Photography: Anthony Hamilton

Anthony Hamilton has been making waves in the music industry for over 25 years, with his rich, soulful voice and powerful lyrics that capture the human experience. He has been described as a ‘national treasure’ by the LA Times.

In addition to being a winning singer, he is a songwriter, producer and actor.

Anthony Hamilton has achieved global sales of over 50+ million albums and is a North Carolina Music Hall of Fame inductee.

But as we dig deeper into the life of this Grammywinning artist, there is so much to uncover.

Anthony Makes a Difference in Charlotte

Anthony loves Charlotte and has given back to the community to make his hometown better. Born in Charlotte in 1971, Anthony grew up listening to a diverse range of music, from gospel to soul to country. He began singing in church as a child and in South Mecklenburg High School’s choir. During his successful music career, Anthony has lived in Waxhaw with his kids. Having grown up here he is aware of how difficult life can be for some. His life provides

inspiration to many kids and adults in Charlotte and everywhere. He has hosted events and donated food to families during holidays, gifted school supplies for children in need and he has voiced his concern for human injustices during our challenging times. Anthony’s T.A.S.T.E Foundation (Take A Step to Elevate) is a component of the Foundation For The Carolinas. His Foundation is a national charitable organization dedicated to empowering, educating, and enlightening disadvantaged communities. Its programs and partnerships aim to affect change in education, housing insecurity/homelessness, social injustice, prison reform, mental and physical health, leadership development, and mentoring.

Anthony’s Musical Successes

By the time Anthony was in his early twenties, he was performing in nightclubs and other venues in the Charlotte area. Anthony soon moved to New York to follow his dream of making it big in the music industry. In 1993, he signed his first record deal with Uptown Records. A versatile artist, Anthony would soon establish himself as an accomplished singer, songwriter and record producer. His talents as a songwriter earned recognition in 1999 when “U Know What’s Up,” a song Anthony co-wrote, became a hit for singer Donell Jones. Just three years later, Anthony received his first Grammy nomination for Nappy Roots’ 2002 single, “Po Folks.”

A year later, Anthony released his second studio album “Comin’ from Where I’m From.” The album, which went Platinum, showcases Anthony’s unique blend of soul, R&B and gospel and was a critical and commercial success thanks in part to its title track and the hit single “Charlene.” In 2008, Anthony won the Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Performance for his duet with legendary Soul singer Al Green on the single, “You’ve Got the Love I Need.”

Anthony has released several more albums, including Ain’t Nobody Worryin’ (2005), The Point of It All (2008), Back to Love (2011) and What I’m Feelin’ (2016). In 2022, Anthony was awarded the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Male Artist for his stellar performance on his album, Love is the New Black (2021). But beyond his critical and commercial success, it’s Anthony’s authenticity and honesty that has endeared him to fans around the world. He writes and sings about the struggles and joys of everyday life, from love and heartbreak to family and spirituality. His music is deeply personal and relatable, and his live performances are known for their soulful energy and raw emotion. Hamilton continues to tour, sharing his gifts throughout the world. He says it still feels new, like when he first heard the rhythm and blues melodies that defined his existence and that every time he hits the stage, he falls deeper and deeper in love with the art of music. Still a humble student of music, he continues to hone his craft, and the dream of performing for others leads him to stages, both small and grand. Touring has become his lifeblood,

a means to share his gift with audiences far and wide. Every performance is an intimate exchange, a testament to his dedication and love for music. Anthony is currently on tour throughout South Africa, the US and the Bahamas.

Anthony’s Love For His Family

Despite his numerous career successes, Anthony finds his ultimate joy and fulfillment in his role as father to his six sons Anthony Jr., Romeiro, Tristen, Nolan, Aaron and Princeton. Though he has been open about the challenges of balancing career and family life, he has always made it clear that his family comes first. Anthony’s family is an integral part of his music career. His children have

appeared in several of his music videos, and his son, Romeiro, is also a talented musician who has performed with his father on stage. Anthony often shares photos and videos of his family on social media, and he has said that they are his biggest inspiration and motivation. Anthony celebrated food, family and nostalgia in his first self-published book, Cornbread, Fish ‘n Collard Greens, where he shares the inspiration for some of the iconic songs in his illustrious career and his love of southern foods. His love of food is centered around his deep southern roots and timeless meals.

The Art of Grilling is a Timeless Tradition for Men

Impress Your Dinner Guests With a Tomahawk Steak

Writers: Benjamin Edwards and Effie Russell

Photography: Provided

Grilling is more than just a way to cook; it’s a celebration of life’s simple joys. For many men, it’s a chance to connect with nature, express creativity, and share meaningful moments with loved ones. So, whether you’re a seasoned grill master with a high end grill or you’re a novice just starting out, fire up the grill, embrace the process, and savor the experience. After all, there’s nothing quite like the taste of food cooked over an open flame.

If you don’t have a grill yet that you adore, then do your research, find one and experiment. Choosing the right grill can make all the difference. It’s about more than just fuel type or size—it’s about finding a tool that fits your lifestyle and enhances your cooking experience. Whether you’re flipping burgers for a casual cookout or slow-smoking brisket for a family feast, the right grill can turn any meal into a masterpiece. With so many grill options on the market, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Don’t worry, there is one that suits your needs, lifestyle, and taste buds. Take a chance and understand that you can use what you have until you’re ready to graduate to something more challenging. When you’re ready,

conservatively invest in another grill as your interest grows and your experience develops. You can always upgrade later to one with more bells and whistles if you desire.

Before you fire up your grill, plan a strategy for enjoying your experience. You’ll find grilling accessories, seasonings and whatever main course you’d like to share with your guests at The Butcher’s Market located at 8410 Rea Road, Suite 110, Charlotte, NC 28277 in Robinson Farms. It’s a great place so you’ll be tempted to browse for a while and you will likely add more items to your cart than you had on your list.

A Tomahawk Steak for Grilling

One of the more popular beef steaks that men are attracted to these days for grilling are Tomahawk ribeye steaks. There is something about the long bone that men are attracted to! It’s hard to imagine a better main event for your dinner guests than a properly grilled Tomahawk Steak. Sometimes known as a Cowboy Steak, a thick cut of tomahawk steak is undoubtedly a meal fit for royalty.

Most tomahawk steaks weigh in at 3 or more pounds. Combined with the fact that they are typically high quality cuts of meat, you’ll want to make sure you know how to grill a tomahawk steak to make sure you’re getting the maximum bang for your buck.

Seasoning Your Steak

A tomahawk ribeye is a giant cut of steak still on the rib bone. It’s a sight to behold, and you’ll want to make sure you do it justice on the grill. First things first, you’ll want to get your beef seasoned. It’s best to keep things simple when it comes to seasoning quality pieces of meat – all you really want to do is bring out the delicious flavor within your tomahawk ribeye. We suggest you use a seasoning mixture of

kosher salt, black pepper, and maybe a little bit of garlic powder, but you can feel free to use your favorite steak seasoning as a substitute. Because a tomahawk steak is a HUGE piece of meat, you’ll want to make sure to be liberal when it comes to applying your seasoning. Make sure you coat the entire thing, including sides and even the fatty parts.

Let Your Steak Breathe At Room Temperature Before Grilling

Afterwards, let your steak rest at room temperature for a minimum of about 45 minutes. If time is on your side, you can also place your seasoned beef into the fridge for a couple of hours before letting it rest at room temperature.

During this time, the beef will absorb the seasoning and flavor will begin to sink in. Also, the seasoning will absorb some of the moisture inside of the steak which will help create a beautiful crust when you sear it later as it grills.

A Meat Thermometer is Recommended

You might be able to get away without a probe thermometer when you grill a traditional steak – when the steaks are thinner, it’s possible to “eyeball” it and do just fine, especially if you have some grilling experience.

That’s not the case with a tomahawk steak. It’s crucial that you utilize a probe meat thermometer to know the temperature of the innermost. section of your beef while it cooks. You won’t be able to tell when it’s done otherwise. A medium steak will need to reach around 140 degrees.

Again, your Tomahawk will beckon you to let it rest after grilling. This will allow the juices to redistribute throughout the meat for the best flavor. After resting for 10 - 15 minutes, slice the meat for the ultimate in taste satisfaction. Enjoy!
