Charlotte Ballet’s Bright Light

Through her dedicated study and gifted performance qualities, the beautiful young Elyn Jaime Jenkins was selected to play the leading role of Clara in Charlotte Ballet’s Nutcracker production in 2023. After her dazzling performance last year, she earned a welldeserved return to the Belk Theater in the Blumenthal for the grand event again this year in 2024.

The story of the Nutcracker with two acts based on a fairy tale, introduces us to a young girl who goes to an imaginary land of enchanted adventures in her Christmas eve dream. It is a widely known story and beloved classical ballet that we look forward to seeing each year. We especially enjoyed watching Elyn in her role last year as she was showcased at the early age of 13. The audience appreciated her talents, and she was recognized as the first Afro-Latina young lady to play Clara in the Nutcracker with the Charlotte Ballet.

Elyn is the daughter of a Puerto Rican mom, Cindy Mercado Jenkins and African American dad, Jamie Jenkins. She began dancing at 2 years old and at 5 years old she caught the eye of a Charlotte Ballet teacher when she visited the Jenkins’ family home after moving into Elyn’s neighborhood. While watching her movements, she pointed out to Elyn’s mom that her daughter should be in ballet school. This was Elyn’s extraordinary beginning in ballet!
The personable young lady had a passion for the Nutcracker from the start and was further inspired when her father took her to see the performance for the first time. Watching others perform in the role motivated her. She felt the energy and enjoyed the grandeur of it all. It propelled her and led her to acknowledge that the greatness of the event was meant for her and would fit well with her big personality.
The expressions of gratitude from Elyn for her family’s support and encouragement are amazing. Her siblings are also her biggest fans. She appreciates how her family has made sacrifices so she can chase her dreams. Before each class, her mom says to her “Dance strong and pretty!”
Elyn’s performance has captured the attention of many in our community including one of the local chapters of the Links, Incorporated, a national friendship and service organization of

prominent women who are of African American descent. In Charlotte, The Crown Jewels (NC) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated’s Arts Facet selected Elyn as the honored student artist for its Classics Through the Ages (CTA) Program.
CTA is a National Signature Program of The Links, Incorporated. The program promotes arts education among African American youth to pique their interest, increase their knowledge and encourage their continued study in the classical arts. It is a dual mentoring initiative whereby chapters, in conjunction with artistic partners, mentor promising student artists, who in turn mentor their peers. The Crown Jewels chapter is an artistic partner with the Charlotte Ballet in its CTA program.
As quoted by Ayisha McMillan Cravotta, the Academy Director with Charlotte Ballet, “Elyn is a dedicated, talented, young artist and her presence onstage is captivating. I am delighted to see the community support that Elyn is receiving through partnership with the Links’ Classics Through the Ages program. Young dancers training at this rigorous level benefit a great deal from connecting with professional artists and performance opportunities. It is wonderful to have support from the Links as we provide Elyn and her fellow Charlotte Ballet Academy students access to master classes and mentorship with dancers like Raven Barkley.”

Elyn has been training in ballet, jazz, modern, Broadway and contemporary dance forms at the Charlotte Ballet Academy for the past nine years. The Academy is the first school of ballet in the state affiliated with a nationally renowned professional ballet company. The school provides a nurturing and structured environment that encourages individuality, creative expression and an appreciation for the art of dance. Elyn also received a full merit scholarship to train at The School of American Ballet this past summer.
Elyn has said “My experience at Charlotte Ballet has been amazing. They
have created an environment where everyone feels free to learn and grow. My instructors are always so nurturing and willing to pour into me. The years that I’ve spent under their training has shaped me as a dancer and also as a person. They inspire me daily.”
As a ninth grader, Elyn is enrolled in Dunamis Conservatory Homeschool, and volunteers at area schools to share her love of dance with other students. Her self-discipline, work ethic and respect for her instructors fuels her goal to be a professional classical ballet dancer.
The beautiful princess also has modeling and acting experiences to

add to her list of accomplishments. Elyn has modeled in ads for Belk and other retailers. She has also performed as an actress in Nickelodeon and Disney productions which has helped strengthen her abilities to perform in productions like the Nutcracker. She proudly recognizes the impact that she can have on other young ladies who look like her and are dancers in the minority as women of color. She is excited about influencing them and helping them find the confidence and strength they need to excel.
Elyn has commented “Ballet has blessed my life way beyond the stage. Some of my best friends, greatest life lessons, and incredible experiences, so far, have come from this art form. I hope to continue to work hard and earn a position with a professional company somewhere and inspire other little girls to go out and chase their dreams. Until then, I’ll keep doing my best to dance ‘strong and pretty’!” We see Elyn as a bright and shining star ready to light up the entire world.
> See Elyn perform with the Charlotte Ballet in the Nutcracker at Belk Theater in the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, 130 N. Tryon Street, Charlotte, NC 28202 on December 6 - 22, 2024. Purchase tickets and learn more about Charlotte Ballet and its other productions at charlotteballet.org or 704.372.1000.

SouthPark

It’s hard to believe that what was once an expansive dairy farmland belonging to prominent Charlotte native and former NC Governor Cameron Morrison is now a premier shopping, dining and gathering place for everyone to see and to be seen in. SouthPark has high-end designer boutiques, trendy stores and hot spots with international cuisine. Everyone who is well known or who thinks of themselves as important wants to see what’s here and be seen here. More and more it is the number one place for travelers to check out when they visit Charlotte.

Inside the enclosed shopping mecca are gifts for everyone on anyone’s list from the lowest price points to very expensive numbers. There are stores with merchandise in almost every category for gals, guys, kids, pets and for the home too.
The mall was originally built in the 70s but is constantly being upgraded to bring the hottest brands to Charlotte. Charlotte’s SouthPark has the appeal of a classy locale and is a gleaming escape for those seeking finer things and an upscale experience. Guests who visit SouthPark enjoy the accessibility to Uptown Charlotte without spending a lot of time in Center City. The airport is just a quick trip away too. You can also get to almost anywhere else in the Charlotte metro area from SouthPark in a matter of minutes.
Convenience is key when you’re visiting SouthPark for a full shopping, dining or a people watching experience from out of town or from another neighborhood in the Charlotte area. Check into our favorite hotel and pace yourself. Shop

and play with a long-term strategy and stay a while to realize everything SouthPark has to offer. Our friends, readers, viewers and followers really love the Hyatt Centric SouthPark hotel when they are visiting from afar or from another corner of the Charlotte area. This boutique hotel is just across the street from the mall to give you easy access to ultimate shopping. The Centric has everything to make you feel right at home when you want to take a break from exploring all the shops.
The hotel, surrounded by the Apex complex, sits where the Sharon United Methodist Church was once located. For many years the church was the mall’s only neighbor on Sharon Road across the street and it was notorious for its ski sled roof line. As the church’s membership declined, it was demolished a few years ago to make way for the Apex. However, a new church was born and remains inside the Apex site as SouthPark Church, with its Methodist characteristics intact. The Apex also hosts other new notable businesses and restaurants.
The hotel has complimentary parking and the rooms and suites in the Centric are modern, welcoming, cozy and comfortable. The hotel also houses some of the best food and drinks for breakfast and brunch in IRO and the IRO Bar and Lounge on the 2nd floor.

For an exceptional dinner that you’ll never forget visit MIZU on the hotel’s 9th floor. There is not enough that can be said about the food at MIZU which melds southern traditions with Japanese inspired cooking on wood-fired robata grills offering a seafood focused menu in addition to beef, chicken and sushi. The rooftop location has a dramatic view with a patio that’s romantic and enticing when the weather permits, otherwise the modern-yet-elegant dining room is spot on.
The hotel is perfect for business meetings, group events, weddings, parties and other special occasions too. Book a stay at the Hyatt Centric SouthPark, located at 3100 Apex Drive, Charlotte, NC, 28211 and make a reservation to visit MIZU on the 9th Floor for dinner at 704.981.9299 or mizurestaurant.com.

Exciting News! There are now free rides in and around SouthPark! As a gracious complimentary free service from SouthPark Community Partners, you can catch a ride on the SouthPark Skipper. Enjoy a stress free, point-topoint ride service offering free rides within the SouthPark neighborhood every day from 9am-9pm. You can travel for free by scheduling on the app throughout SouthPark on all the major streets including Sharon, Fairview, Colony, Coltsgate, Carnegie, Rexford, Barclay Downs and Park South. Visit southparkclt.org to learn more about SouthPark Community Partners and the new Skipper free ride service in SouthPark.
Spectacular amenities are all over the SouthPark area. One of our favorites is to enjoy a trip to LePetit Spa where you can relax, rejuvenate and recover from all your retail therapy before you leave for home. LePetit Spa can be your one stop shop for the finest skin care products and services when treating yourself or sharing with your partner, family, friends or loved ones. Experience the ultimate in luxury for body waxing, threading, chemical peels, facials and more. LePetit Spa gift cards are always the right answer for gift giving too. Make an appointment with LePetit Spa located in SouthPark at 6342 Fairview Road, Suite 101, Charlotte, NC, 28210, call 980.406.3269 and learn more at lepetitspacharlotte.com.
Many guests come to visit SouthPark and never want to leave. It’s a great place to invest in, work in, play in and live in. SouthPark neighborhoods are filled with luxury homes, tree lined streets for quiet strolls, greenspaces for picnics and
there is a delicate balance with the old and new. There are also gleaming condos popping up in places where cattle once grazed if you don’t want the single-family home experience. If you’re ready for a longer stay and would like to take a look at available real estate for a permanent move to SouthPark, connect with Real Estate Broker Jackie Smith with Charlotte’s Finest Properties at RE/MAX Executive Real Estate SouthPark. She and her team are experts in SouthPark real estate sales. She is most capable of helping since she’s listed and sold one of priciest homes ever in SouthPark.
