OGA, new Hall of Fame offer scholarship opportunities Young Oklahoma golfers will have several new scholarship opportunities available in 2015, thanks to programs by the Oklahoma Golf Association Foundation and the Oklahoma Golf Hall of Fame.

The OGA Foundation announced in mid January that it will award two $5,000 scholarships and five $2,500 scholarships this year to high school seniors who have played on the Oklahoma Junior Golf Tour and are looking to attend college but do not have playing scholarships. A full set of criteria is on the OGA website at www.okgolf.org.

The $5,000 scholarships are named for Roy Oxford and Bill Barrett, two wonderful gentleman who helped guide the OGA through the 1980s and 1990s and would both be proud that the organization is now in the position to have a foundation that can help young Oklahoma golfers attend college.

Get on the OGA site soon as the first scholarships will be awarded in June.

By the time you read this, you will hopefully have read the news elsewhere that a new non-profit entity has been formed to honor the greatest Oklahoma golfers in history with induction into the new Oklahoma Golf Hall of Fame. The first class will be announced soon with a fund-raising golf tournament scheduled this spring at Oak Tree National and the first induction ceremony

held in October of 2015.

The Oklahoma Golf Hall of Fame has reached an agreement with the Women’s Oklahoma Golf Hall of Fame to have one entity and roll all of the previous inductees into the women’s hall into the new group.

The board of the new Hall of Fame is composed of powerful industry leaders led

by Oak Tree National owner Everett Dobson, who pushed hard for the Hall’s creation. As part of its mission, the Oklahoma Golf Hall of Fame will also have a scholarship program which will begin in 2016.

Details of the program will be available at oklahomagolfhof.org. Also at that site you can see biographies and videos of all past inductees into the women’s hall, as well as details on how you can get involved with the new Oklahoma Golf Hall of Fame, including suggesting future inductees.

These scholarships will supplement others offered by WOGA (see details at www. woga.us) The First Tee of Tulsa, the Oklahoma Golf Course Superintendents Association and other groups.

Tom Doak's five-year plan: The confidential guide to golf courses by tom bedell

I played a memorable round at Crystal Downs with Tom Doak a couple of years back. Two other golf journalists were along; they will remain nameless for their protection. (Michigan isn’t Colorado.)

Crystal Downs, in Frankfort, Mich., is one of the world’s great courses, a 1929 Alister MacKenzie and Perry Maxwell design.

It is, in a word, crucial in Doak’s personal and professional life. He moved to the area to be near the course. It inspired him to be a golf course designer. His first design job arose out of his association with the course. He wrote a book about MacKenzie.

Playing such a course with, arguably, the most in-demand course designer in the world? No pressure. I went out in 4-over 39. Then one of my journalist colleagues suggested I partake of an herbal concoction he was just then torching up. And, dear reader, I did. I came in with a 59, 24-over.

I’m not sure Doak was ever aware of our transgression, one I have studiously avoided since while playing. He remained a genial host over a clubhouse lunch, talking over his current projects. As I was mostly trying to deal with the shock of my golfing transmogrification I don’t recall a lot of this.

He may have even discussed the transmogrification of the original manuscript of “The Confidential Guide to Golf Courses” from its modest beginnings to near-legendary collectors’ status to its new incarnation, a planned five-volume library of world-wide golf course critiques. The first volume is out now, on the courses of Great Britain and Ireland. Look for a new volume in each of the next four years, in this order: The Americas (winter destinations); The Americas (summer destinations); Europe, Middle East and Africa, and lastly Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

Doak’s design career was in an embryonic state when the Guide first came out in 1988 – 40 copies he sent to friends with his unvarnished musings on some of the world’s great, or less great, courses. As he notes in the introduction to the new version, “By the time the book was published for a mainstream audience, in 1996, it might as well have been titled, `The Controversial Guide.’”

Doak’s real impulse initially was to tell his friends about the great courses in the world. But it was his blunt criticisms of others that raised the most dust and ruffled feathers of other designers, course owners or operators. Some accused him of knocking down other designers to further his own aspirations.

So why go through all this again? Less to stir the pot, he insists, than to reveal the “many wonderful golf courses overlooked and unloved” in the typical top100 lists. And, he says, “I’m back because I missed writing.”

And write he did, since the new Guide, or guides, are essentially new works. Aside from the five-way volume split, the most dramatic difference is that Doak has taken on three collaborators to help track down more courses: Ran Morrissett of Southern Pines, N.C., the founder of golfclubatlas. com; Masa Nishijima of Tokyo, a contributing editor on course architecture for Japan Golf Magazine and Choice Golf; and Darius Oliver, author and architecture editor of Australian Golf Digest.

The four use the same 0-10 Doak Scale rating system to attach to the capsule reviews (most of those in Doak’s voice), and share writing on longer pieces about 18 favorite Gourmet’s Choice courses in each volume. It’s a handsome magazine-sized book with plenty of photos and intriguing hole diagrams, and it’s pricey--$60 per volume plus $10 shipping. Is it worth it? The answer for many traveling golfers, actual or armchair, will be an unqualified yes. Having been to many of the courses in this book, I found it like catnip, tossing my nose around in it until sated and nearly senseless, but then coming back later for more.

There’s a lot to dive into here. Aside from the 18 favorite courses pieces are four main review sections (Scotland, England, Wales and Ireland) further broken down into regional categories, since Doak recommends visitors feast on locales rather than crisscrossing countries in an exhausting attempt to notch one’s belt with the allstar courses.

nature of “best-of” lists, there are about 20 pages of lists at the end of the book. But these are less for ranking purposes than for fun — “Best Clubhouse Lunch,” “Courses Worth Groveling to Play,” “Best Courses to Play With Your Dog,” “Schizophrenic Courses,” “Most Ammo Required” and so on, including “Most Fun to Play.” (I might add “Courses Where It’s Best to Avoid Getting Stoned.”)

I was happy to see North Berwick, one of my favorites, on the top of the “Fun to Play” list, and also as one of the Gourmet’s Choice picks. But everyone will find something to disagree with here, and that, too, is part of the fun.

Doak, older and wiser, may be a little less cantankerous than in the earlier version of the Guide, although he notes there’s a lot less to be cantankerous about when discussing the courses in this book: “Great Britain and Ireland have largely avoided the monstrous displays of earthmoving muscle foisted upon the earth by golf architects in America and, especially, Asia,” which promises more lively discussion in the volumes ahead.

It didn’t stop him from slapping a 0 rating (“A course so contrived and unnatural that it may poison your mind....”) on the Castle Course at St. Andrews, the only one in the book so distinguished. (Nishijima and Oliver both give it a 5: “Well above the average golf course....”)

One course received an across the board 10 (“Nearly perfect....”), the Old Course at St. Andrews. Four other courses in the world have received four 10s, but they won’t appear until the later volumes. Stay tuned, or start guessing.

Jet charter is popular option by greg horton

Financial Advisor Magazine has been tracking the recovery of the charter jet industry in America, as well as the increase in business flights overall, and the news is very good.

The FAA reported that business jet traffic has increased 20 percent between 2009 and May 2014. Also, JetCharters.com, a thirdparty service that connects clients to available jets, told FA Magazine that it had a 61-percent increase in visitors and trip requests in the first half of 2014.

At the same time, the General Aviation Manufacturers Association reported a rise in fractional ownership from 2008-13, so both options indicate an increasing health in business travel in the context of private aviation.

American Jet Charter is an Oklahoma Citybased private charter company with nine aircraft, ranging from a light twin to a ninepassenger jet. Jim Hensley, the owner of AJC,

said there are benefits to both fractional ownership and private charter.

“The first obvious difference is that with fractional ownership you will be paying monthly fees, including management fees, whether you fly that month or not,” Hensley said.

The tax benefits that accrue to ownership are also worth considering, as well as is the fact that there are no additional charges for a one-way flight.

“Everyone is going to pay charges, though,” he said. “It’s just a matter of how you want to pay.”

The downside of fractional ownership, in addition to the management fees and cost even when the aircraft is unused, is the depreciation of the asset’s value. Some fractional ownership services also double the price of the aircraft and then split it between investors, a move that makes ownership more expensive that it ought to be.

“The investors also have no protection if the company goes belly up,” Hensley said.

“It doesn’t matter how many hours of use you have left on your account if the company doesn’t exist anymore.”

AJC originated in 1986 and has a flawless safety record.

“We have experienced pilots, and we insist they attend Flight Safety training annually,” Hensley said. “Also, we have our own maintenance department in-house, so the aircraft are safe and have access to immediate maintenance or repair.”

Hensley added that the company gives 30day terms to longtime customers, but others are asked to pay up front. AJC manager Angela Betten has been with the company for 20 years and Hensley said she has a tremendous amount of experience in pairing clients with aircraft, arranging travel plans, and other services that make chartering his aircraft very customer friendly.

Legends regather The legends of the game will gather again in Branson, this time a bit earlier in the season, for the second annual Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf at Big Cedar Lodge.

This year’s event is April 24-26. The format will again be a best-ball, with teams playing one round Friday or Saturday at the nine-hole Top of the Rock and one round at the renovated Buffalo Ridge Golf Course (formerly Branson Creek), with all competitors returning to Top of the Rock for the final round on Sunday.

Visitors this year will be able to see much more than a year ago, as the cave tour and natural history museum are open.

A Cigar Story: The Birth of Oliva Serie V Melanio by laramie navrath

Every golfer loves a good story and every cigar enthusiast loves to tell one.

This story starts in the late 1800s, when Melanio Oliva started growing cigar tobacco in Cuba. His heirs carried on the tradition in the fields, but it was his grandson Gilberto Oliva Sr. who began rolling cigars. Facing difficulties along the way Gilberto moved from Cuba to Honduras in 1964 and started working for the Plasencia Family.

In 1995 he and his son Gilberto Jr. created a cigar within Plasencia’s factory called Gilberto Oliva. A year later, they set out to open a factory of their own, and shortened their brand name to Oliva. It was the middle of a cigar boom yet Oliva struggled.

Cash was running low and in a cost-cutting move they turned to Gilberto Sr.’s robust stocks of Nicaraguan tobacco. This bold move changed the flavor profile of Oliva cigars during a time when the interest in Nicaraguan flavor was rising. Oliva caught the attention of connoisseurs in 2006 with the debut of Oliva Serie V. Crafted by a small group of rollers and blended for strength and style, the Serie V line was an immediate hit.

In 2012, to pay tribute to the first man in the family to grow cigar tobacco, Oliva added the Melanio. What distinguishes the Melanio apart from the original Serie V? First you will notice the Melanio Robusto is box pressed, comes in a 10 count box with a beautiful double band and has solid construction.

The Melanio produces a good volume of smoke, a nice white-gray ash and cedar spice notes on the retro-hale. There is nice complexity and spice throughout the smoke giving this cigar medium strength. The flavors are best described as rich, big notes of leather, coffee, sweet caramel and nutty intonations. A classic smoke from start to finish; the Oliva Serie V Melanio has secured a spot in history as Cigar Aficionado’s 2014 Cigar of the Year!

Meers is just north of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, and it is not the easiest place to find, but totally worth the effort. The web site has excellent directions.

Wayne Abshere, a World War II veteran, started in the restaurant business in California after the war. He relocated to Lawton in 1950, and some version of Wayne’s DriveInn has existed ever since. Locals speak of Wayne’s as if it simply part of the narrative of Lawton, and in a way, it is. The burgers are outstanding—and they recommend mustard, too—but the steak fingers will remind you of your mother’s. There are two locations in Lawton.

In the southeastern part of the state, right next to Lake Eufala, is Pete’s Place. Rare is the Oklahoman who has never heard of this Krebs restaurant, or the Choc beer associated with it. The first Pete’s Place opened in 1925, but Pete Piegari was making beer before he was making food.

The menu at Pete’s Place is heavy on the Italian, which makes sense, as the founder and his family are Italian. However, there is plenty of diversity and there is plenty of

Eischen’s Bar in Okarche is not the oldest, c on t i nuou s l yoperating bar in Oklahoma, but it is the oldest, having opened as Eischen’s Saloon in 1896. The current iteration opened in 1993, and since that time, Eischen’s has established itself as a destination restaurant--quite an accomplishment for a small bar in Okarche. The town is about a half hour north of Oklahoma City via the Northwest Expressway (Highway 3).

If you are headed north up I35, a detour to Ponca City will reward you with the chance to try Head Country Barbecue.

Driver onslaught continues in 2015 by ed travis

Looking ahead to what will be in the shops for the new golf season, we see equipment manufacturers have announced lots of new clubs, particularly drivers, that attract our attention.

Here are several that are worth considering if you are in the market for a new driver.

TaylorMade The metalwood market leader is TaylorMade Golf and for 2015 they have announced two new drivers, the R15--a return to the “R” nomenclature--and the AeroBurner, a name evoking memories of their very popular Burner line of a few years ago.

The R15 employs the sliding weight channel of the SLDR driver from this past season, but with a couple of differences. Rather than the SLDR’s single sliding weight, the R15 has two and perhaps, more importantly, the weight channel in which they slide is closer to the leading edge, allowing it to act as a sole slot, replacing the separate slot in TaylorMade the sole of the SLDR. Having the flex- 460cc R15 ibility of two sliding

weights means there are lots of combinations for placement along the channel for the user, including locking them in at the opposite ends of the channel for maximum forgiveness. The 460cc R15, with an improved loft sleeve and either a white or black crown, is $429 plus there’s a slightly smaller head, R15 430, for the same price. The R15 TP is $499.

TMaG’s second new driver, the AeroBurner ($299, choice of four lofts), has improved aerodynamic shaping of the clubhead and there’s even a small vane on the hosel for better air flow.

Though not adjustable, the lightweight AeroBurner does have the biggest Speed Pocket that TaylorMade has designed.

Tour Edge The Hot Launch driver from Tour Edge Golf very well may be the “sleeper hit” of 2015. It has four degrees of loft adjustability and a four-piece titanium clubhead weighted towards the rear center to provide better trajectory and spin. So the Hot Launch has all the “bells and whistles” but the most attractive feature is the price, an almost unbelievable $200 making it half the cost of comparative competitive offerings.

Tour Edge has built over the years a solid reputation by producing great clubs using the highest quality materials and the latest manufacturing techniques and they are doing it again with the Hot Launch. Titleist Titleist introduces new drivers biannually and the 915 series are the latest. The 915 D2 (460cc $449) and D3 (440cc $449) are both great looking and each has a 16 loft and lie combination adjustable hosel and a long, wide sole slot the company has tagged an Active Recoil Channel to help to lower ball spin. They make use of Titleist’s Radial Speed Face, a forged face insert thinner towards the heel and toe, to transmit more energy to the ball on off-center impacts.

The clubhead has been internally weighted to give a low and deep center of gravity for high MOI (resistance to twisting) values and added stability.

Callaway Golf continues on its quest to regain their former top spot in the metalwoods category with a new low-spin driver, the Big Bertha Alpha 815 ($450), complimenting last year’s Big Bertha Alpha. It has an adjustable 460 cc clubhead with a choice between three lofts (9°, 10.5° or 12°), each making use of the Gravity Core we first saw in the original Alpha. High swing speed players who want to lower their ball spin can take a look at the Big Bertha Alpha 815 Double Black Diamond model ($500). A slightly smaller clubhead will particularly benBig Bertha efit those who hit in the center of the Alpha 815 clubface most of the time (read touring

professionals). Both 815s make use of RMOTO, Callaway’s rib motion technology to strengthen the clubhead.

Ping Ping Golf’s G30 driver has caused quite a bit of comment for both its engineering and the fact fan-favorite Bubba Watson has been getting a lot of television time while using his which has a distinctive pink shaft. Then of course there are also the G30’s distinctive “Turbulators” on the crown to improve the head’s aerodynamics and help produce more speed. Cobra has dropped the Bio Cell brand name they were using in favor of a new name, Fly-Z, a line that includes three new drivers. Each has a weight saving design with the Fly-Z ($330) having an improved resistance to twisting plus a titanium crown to go along with repositioning of the clubhead weight. The Fly-Z+ ($400) is significant because this top of the line model is Cobra’s first to have a repositionable weight.

The 15-gram sole weight can be moved for either a lower ball flight (with added roll out) or higher Cobra Fly-Z flight for more carry.

“We had a PGA Q School the first week I was there and I was scared to death,” Ferguson said. “But what a great experience it turned out to be. I got to play with Boone Pickens, Pete Dye, pick the brain of Ernie Vossler, just a lot of great experiences.

“You grow up in hard times in Oklahoma and start to learn there’s not many things that can scare you if you’re dedicated to what you’re trying to accomplish.

Having guys like Roger Maxwell and Mike Kelly and U.C. as my mentors, I learned that if you believe in what you’re trying to accomplish, you can accomplish about anything.”

Ferguson was talked into returning to Oklahoma by WinStar General Manager Wayne McCormick. He was talked into the golf business in the first place not by his grandfather, but by his father, Scott Ferguson, who played professional golf and later worked at Pine Top Country Club in Flagstaff, Ariz., before eventually changing career paths.

Guests at WinStar this spring will see construction under way on a final nine holes which will bring the facility to 36 holes. The new nine is being designed by Steve Wolfard, who worked with D.A. Weibring on the original 18. Construction begins in April.

each day will be outfitted with the new 15-inch oversize cups that Taylormade has been pushing as part of its Hack Golf initiative as a way to speed up play, increase enjoyment and grow the game.

“This continues one of Fergie’s big initiatives and that was to make golf fun, fast and enjoyable,” Ferguson said. “We’re going to promote this pretty heavily and I think you’ll see that even the accomplished golfers and low handicap players enjoy it.”

es, there’s Ballybunion, Royal County Down, Lahinch, Old Head, Waterville, Tralee and Carne, all sparkling gems that ornament the crown jewels of Irish golf. They rightfully belong on any traveling golfer’s mustXxxxxxxxx play list.

But after the boxes are checked it’s nice to know there are still great riches to be found in plain sight among Ireland’s golfing grounds. During a trip following last year’s Open Championship, a group of us barely strayed from near Dublin (with one satisfying raid north) and had a five-day feast of exquisite links golf – all the venues are in the Golf Digest top 100 Irish courses list.

The trip was put together by Tourism Ireland and became a masterpiece of good timing. The day before we landed, Rory McIlroy had kissed the Claret Jug as the 2014 Champion Golfer. Four months later, the members of the International Association of Golf Tour Operators voted the Dublin East Coast as the European Golf Destination of the Year in the 2015 IAGTO Awards. It wasn’t hard to see why.

Our award was stunning July weather that kept rainsuits tightly packed and most

of us wearing shorts. Since all the courses we played were links, the ground conditions were the firmest and fastest imaginable. That required some adjustment in club selection, but it also meant I could select my putter instead of wedges from well off the greens, always a virtue in my play.

We headquartered in Malahide, a charming seaside Dublin suburb with its own vital nightlife and restaurants aptly specializing in seafood. But we were close enough to the capital city that I was able to indulge in my main non-golfing interest, searching out the latest in craft beers. [See box] We had barely checked into the Grand Hotel Malahide before being whisked off for a jet-lag round. And I’ll just as quickly plunge into some highlights of the courses we played.

The Links Portmarnock (http://www. portmarnock.com): By sheer coincidence this was the very first course I ever played in Ireland, in 2001. It was then a relatively new resort course coupled with a luxury hotel, but then as now there’s little to indicate the 1995 design by Bernhard Langer and Stan Eby doesn’t date back a hundred years earlier.

Both hotel and course lay partly on the former Jameson estate, which the whiskey-making family built in 1847. In 1858, a 12-hole routing was laid out and some of this was incorporated into the Langer-Eby design, perhaps accounting for its antique look.

John Jameson IV is buried just right of the Links’ first fairway. He was the first president of the neighboring Portmarnock Golf Club — which is over 100 — and the Links is an excellent companion and warmup for that imposing test. As our days progressed, the course seemed, in retrospect, to be somewhat kinder to one’s pride than the rounds to come. The routing hugs the Irish Sea, but remains partially protected from winds by high dunes.

Nonetheless, especially in the firm conditions, care had to be taken to avoid the treacherous drop-offs from the huge greens.

The fairways are littered with close to 100 bunkers, some of them cavernous, and offline drives can quickly go missing in the ever-hungry native grasses and gorse.

but nursed the dream of his own course ever since he heard, back in 1958, that Jack Burke and Jimmy Demaret were building a course of their own in Texas and calling it the Champions Golf Club.

Ruddy’s vision came to fruition in 1992 — long enough to live with such a thought that he’s since written two books about it, not to mention the yardage booklet, which has its own arch tone: “Less powerful or gifted players will find a way to play the links satisfactorily if they play within the scope of their talents and refrain from undue acts of aggression against a links which takes no prisoners from amongst the foolish.”

Forewarned is forearmed, but with a little strength, accuracy and patience the course is exhilarating to play. Every hole is its individual challenge, but with just two par-5s and three par-3s, the challenge really ramps up on seven through 13 — six straight par4s and then a fascinating par-5. Two extra par-3s are wedged into the course for those with extra time, energy or bets to settle.

ocean. Our sole foray to Northern Ireland brought us to this seaside gem and produced my new favorite hole in the country, the 11th.

Facing a dogleg right par-5 over a marshy estuary, I crushed a drive, blasted a 5-wood through the green, and made about a 60-foot wedge shot for an eagle. What’s not to like?

Ardglass is mere miles from Royal County Down, and it would be a folly to book the latter without also taking the amiable hike here. The course rises from that first tee hugging a craggy hillside, wanders into a more meadow-like setting in the middle holes, and offers a thrilling return downhill at the close.

We did wander over to have a look at Royal County Down and were fairly dazzled in the process. The setting among the Mountains of Mourne is more than appetite-whetting. But we didn’t have a tee time, so we sated ourselves at the sumptuous Oak Restaurant at the Slieve Donard Hotel next to the course.

The Island Golf Club (http://www.theislandgolfclub.com): Now celebrating its 125th year, the Island course gets my trip’s hidden gem award. I had never heard of it.

But it’s perched in the No. 13 slot on the Irish top 100 list, right ahead of Old Head.

If not as visually stunning as Old Head, The Island is no slouch, occupying some of the same rarefied sea air as the Portmarnock courses. It was accessible only by ferry from Malahide from its founding up until 1973, and for a long stretch, run by an inconsistently sober ferryman.

The course itself is quite intoxicating.

The original designers are lost in the haze of time, but improvements to the course began in its centennial year and haven’t stopped. Martin Hawtree has been responsible for much of the work over the last 15 years. The closing three holes are new since 1990. The short (337 yards) par-4 14th

remains one of the most remarkable with typically high dunes pinching what looks like a mere green ribbon and is said to be perhaps the narrowest fairway on an Irish links course, some 21 puny yards wide.

I was happy to walk off with a bogey, and even happier to discover The Island and the other fine courses we’d played. I still have a few bucket list courses to play in Ireland, but now I have five more on the roster that I want to challenge again.

Tom Bedell always carries along golf books when he travels, and then reviews them for us in our regular issues.

More than a pint of plain It would be vaguely sacrilegious to travel to Ireland and not have some of the black stuff — Guinness, or Murphy’s or even Beamish Stout. But the sad fact is that none of these are purely Irish products anymore. Guinness is owned by the British multinational beverage company Diageo, while both Murphy’s and Beamish are owned by the Dutch — Heineken International.

They still taste pretty good after a round of golf. But the real innovative action is in a growing craft beer scene. If not yet as intense in Ireland as in the United States, it is nonetheless giving the

beer curious more alternatives, if they’re willing to look for them.

I volunteered my first night in the Dublin suburb of Malahide, and was pleased to find a teeming pub and package store, Gibney’s.

Before being overtaken by jet lag, I was downing a Scraggy Bay IPA from Kinnegar Brewing of County Donegal, and staring at a bounteous shelf of craft beers.

In Dublin, I tracked down two pubs (and there are others) that carried nary a Guinness but a plethora of craft beers — Against Tom Bedell, working his way the Grain on Wexford Street through a generous tap selection. and The Brew Dock on Amiens Street. Both are owned by the independent Galway Bay Brewery, but stock plenty of other regional and international beers.

As I worked my way through several Irish tap selections — Dark Arts Porter from Trouble Brewing, Of Foam and Fury by Galway Bay, and Galway Hooker’s Irish Pale Ale — I got to talking to one local at The Brew Dock who was having his favorite craft alternative: Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Talk about exotic!

Texas to Vegas, not a bad lie Old American, trio of desert courses among editor’s picks

A great part of this job is the chance to spend some time enjoying the adventure of the road, scouting out destinations that we think Oklahoma golfers would enjoy.

Here are a few places we visited this fall.

Old American and The Tribute, The Colony, Texas For the thousands of Oklahomans that roam in and out of north Texas on a regular or semi-regular basis, you’re missing out if you haven’t been over to see this twosome, both set in the same development just north of Frisco.

Both are designed by our own Tripp Davis of Norman. Justin Leonard contributed to the layout of Old American, which is one of the best courses we’ve played in Texas.

The concept of Old American was to incorporate some of the design concepts and playing features of early American

architecture that Davis learned during the extensive renovation work he’s done in the Northeast, where he’s studied courses

by Charles Blair Macdonald, Seth Raynor, A.W. Tilllinghast, Willliam Flynn, Harry Colt, Willie Park and Donald Ross, to name the most prominent.

Fortunately, he found a fertile, sandy site with a huge lake, hardwood trees, elevation change and plenty of wind to craft a course that is unique for the area.

“We’re certainly the only course around that has that native, raw look, with grass faced bunkers, water conservation areas and all the native areas,” said Mike McCabe, director of golf. “In year four, the golf course has really begun to mature and come into its own.”

Old American will accept traditional high shots, but also is a great puzzle to learn for those who play their golf closer to the ground. Many of the greens are more receptive to bump-and-run shots rather than towering iron shots.

“People are really enjoying it,” Davis said. “The most interesting thing is people are starting to learn the strategy of the golf course, which is a little more demanding of your thought than a lot of places. The more they learn, that’s really making it more fun for them.

“Where Pete Dye will throw risk-reward options in your face and intimidate you because of how penal the penalty is, Old American is a lot more subtle. You have to know where the ball needs to wind up no matter how you get it there.

We try to make it open and give you various ways to get it to spots.”

Old American is a pure golf experience with a cozy clubhouse. The members enjoy the talents of chef Nick Baker, one of the best anywhere.

It was a small price to pay for the privilege of playing Southern Highlands, Cascata and Shadow Creek in a whirlwind of fantastic golf, equally great food and fun sponsored by the Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Bureau.

The trip was accurately described as “aspirational,” meaning that Southern Highlands is normally private while the other two come with hefty green fees.

Yet they are well within reach for many of our readers or anyone who has a hot night at the tables.

A great story about Shadow Creek is that when it opened, the course was stocked with many exotic birds that had complete freedom to fly away. Why wouldn’t they? Because when they rose up and saw the miles of rock and plain surrounding the course, they would make a beeline back.

We didn’t play it anywhere near there, but the course stretches to 7,560 yards, with a surprising amount of elevation change, bold greens with plenty of movement, holes that are amazingly isolated one from the next. The conditioning was

stunning. You can spend your time appreciating the amount of effort Fazio put into creating a coherent strategy for the course or you can show up with a stripper for a caddy, which we hear has happened a time or two.

Mark Brenneman, the general manager, has numerous Oklahoma ties and is a most knowledgeable and helpful host.

La Costa turns 50

Former U.S. Ryder Cup member and current Champions Tour player Steve Pate worked with local architect Damien Pascuzzo and Texas’ Jeff Brauer to renovate both courses. The Champions Course, uses most of the memorable tournament competition holes from its vast professional history, including the par-3 16th hole (then the 7th hole) where Woods famously ended his rainy playoff with Tom Lehman with a single tee shot to nine inches. The 17th and 18th holes are known as the La Costa Mile.

The Legends course was also re-designed as a more user-friendly layout which is routed through the adjoining high-tone neighborhood.

“The easiest thing in the world is to make a golf course harder,” Pate said. “But we have a great championship layout and a good, user friendly layout, both which can be played by players of all skills.”

Of course when all that mind, body, golf has you worn out for the day, you’re still at the four-star La Costa Resort with flat-screen TVs in every room, soft beds, great coastal views and consistently awesome weather.

L

et’s get the obvious out of the way at the start – the Black course at Bethpage State Park on Long Island, famously one of the most penal tracks ever built, is not for the faint of heart or those golfers without absolute conviction and confidence in their game.

However, there are many misconceptions about the effort involved with playing Bethpage Black and even more about the do-or-die difficulty waiting for the golfers once they get the chance to tee it up on this A.W. Tillinghast-designed gem.

No, you don’t have to sleep in your car overnight to get a morning tee time as long as you make a little time to plan the round at the Black and get familiar with the State Park’s online reservation system.

Yes, the course can be expensive (up to $150 on the weekend for non-New York State residents), hard to walk and carts are not allowed. Yes, the course has ribbonlike fairways and is hilly and lined with deep bunkers. Yes, most of the putting surfaces, especially on the back-nine, are uphill from the landing areas but that’s part of the appeal.

And, yes, the pace can be slow, but that’s to be expected because of the terrain and the rough and the fact that everyone is walking and carrying their bags or using a pull cart.

It’s all worth it. Beginning at the clubhouse, where you can get a mean egg sandwich or a full breakfast before the round or 34 •••••• www.golfoklahoma.org

a steak afterward, and ending in the golf shop, where you will spend a half-hour after the round buying a shirt or a driver cover or a ballmarker or cap with the iconic Bethpage logo, this place is all about golf and the pleasures and tests of the game.

I accepted the challenge of the Black this past September, teeing off on a beautiful cool, late morning a day after the Farmington area had received enough rain to make the already lush conditions even more so.

It proved to be an experience that met all my expectations and exceeded most and affirmed the reasons why the Black must be on a list of every serious golfer’s mustplay courses.

Breaking down the round I thought a lot about my strategy before heading to the Black. My first thought was to tackle all the par-4 and -5 holes with a 5-iron off the tee to avoid the rough, play wedges into the greens and try to one-putt.

But what fun would that be? Once on the course, I discovered that many of the tee shots demanded more carry off the tee than my 5-iron would give me, negating that plan of attack.

My group, in which I was joined by another golf journalist, an import-export company owner and a local everyday player, opted for the white tees at the Black, which are carded at 6,684 yards for the par71 but play at least 200 yards more because of all the uphill greens.

The whites still carry a rating of 73.8 and a slope of 135; those that want to beat

themselves up can back up to the blue tees, which play at 7,468 yards and bring a 76.6 rating and 144 slope, but if you’re really up for that test you have a lot more golf game than 99 percent of us that play golf regularly.

Five holes of the Black (Nos. 1, 15-18) are on the clubhouse side of Round Swamp Road, with the remainder accessed through a tunnel and up a long hill.

The first thing you notice as you walk around the clubhouse to the first tee (aside from the famous sign), is the sense of grandeur. Everything feels big, hard and larger than life.

The first hole (a 429-yard par-4) is right in your face; you can see the fairway and you can see the green around the sharp doglegleft (or at least you can from the tee). To get past the dogleg you really need to bomb it, otherwise the trees on your right are going to give you some trouble. The putting surface, as with most on the Black, is relatively flat but staggeringly fast. But it’s on the greens where you can make up strokes.

After a walk through the tunnel and up

the hill, the second hole, a 354-yard par-4, plays uphill, with the approach also uphill and over a huge bunker. The third, a 158-yard par-3, has a huge, crowned putting surface and plenty of danger at the rear, making club selection and accuracy paramount.

The par-5 fourth is one of the signature holes at the Black and is every bit as difficult as it’s feted to be. Playing at just 461 yards from the white tees, the drive must be either short of or over a string of bunkers at in the middle of the fairway.

While some golfers might try to go for the uphill green in two strokes, the prudent play is short and right, leaving a 70-yard shot to the putting surface which moves from front to back.

The 502-yard, par-5 seventh moves left to right off the tee and was played as a 489-yard, par-4 in the 2009 U.S. Open. For the average player, it represents one of the few real chances for birdie.

Another birdie chance awaits at the 191-yard, par-3 eighth – the only hole that forces the golfer to carry a water hazard – but you have to attack it from the left side and get your shot all the way to the hole location. Anything short or on the front part of the green risks the chance of rolling back into the pond.

There is no return to the clubhouse after the front-nine. Beginning with the 434-yard 10th, the back-nine features a series of increasingly difficult par-4s, all of them playing uphill to raised greens. The 11th goes at 421 yards, then the 12th is carded at 432 yards, and both of them are lined with 4-inch thick rough.

You get a break from the arduous 2-shotters with the 480-yard par-5 13th, which sounds short but, believe me, plays long and the 152-yard, par-3 14th, on which you want to be anywhere but the huge bunker that fronts the putting surface.

Back through the tunnel is the 15th, which may be the hardest par-4 I have ever played and is the course’s No. 1 handicap. At 430 yards, it’s a sweeping dogleg-left that gives you a pretty open tee shot, but has one of the most difficult approaches on the course.

Playing to this green is like hitting a shot to the top of a four-story building surrounded by sand – it’s really that severe and daunting.

It’s followed by the Black’s iconic par-3 – the 195-yard 17th.

Here the putting surface is hidden by deep bunkers on all sides, making the golfer hit a high, soft shot into a shallow, tiered, lightning-quick green. The closing hole is another iconic offering, a 395-yard par-4 that plays through deep bunkers on both sides of the landing area and up to the elevated green in the shadow of the massive clubhouse.

Bethpage Black hosted the 2002 and 2009 U.S. Opens and is the future site of the 2019 PGA Championship and the 2024 Ryder Cup. It’s one of the greatest golfing challenges out there in the most immaculate conditions, especially for a municipal course. If you get the chance to play there, jump at the opportunity and savor the test.

The Black Course was one of the last courses designed by master golf course architect A.W. Tillinghast, and is said by many to be his finest work.

“The USGA wanted to prove a point with the way it set up the course, and they wanted to test the best in the world with those challenging conditions,” Bickart said. “Even after enduring all the traffic on the courses and the infrastructure involved with holding major events in back-to-back weeks, the course and our resort has never seen better and more in demand.”

I played three of the resort’s courses in the fall before it held the dual Opens and am happy to report that there is no finer collection of varied and challenging tracks in North America.

In the months after I played and stayed in Pinehurst, the resort added its ninth course – the Jack Nicklaus-designed National Golf Club, which it promptly renamed Pinehurst No. 9.

No. 2 is as good as its hype All the talk before the Opens was about the renovation work done on No. 2 by the design team of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw that restored the course’s borders to hardpan, sandy scrub, pine straw and wispy wiregrass. The changes are amazing and daunting for the golfer, who at least knows he will be able to find his ball if it is not in the fairway.

The round at No. 2 gives the golfer one great hole after another and challenge followed by more challenge. One never really gets comfortable on the course, and opportunities to attack the hole locations on the par-70 layout are few and far between because of the famed turtleback greens and the difficult collection areas made even more so by the Coore-Crenshaw restoration.

Opened in 1907, Ross called No. 2 “the fairest test of championship golf I have ever designed.” The legendary golf course architect was associated with the course for nearly a halfcentury, improving the course continually until his death in 1948. No. 2’s crowned undulating greens are some of the most 38 •••••• www.golfoklahoma.org

complex and widely hailed in the world.

Ross believed in providing golfers with strategic choices and No. 2 was intended to epitomize that philosophy – and succeeds with off the chart verve and moxie. It’s fun and playable, but No. 2 also demands your full attention from opening tee shot to final putt. You would expect nothing less from a course that’s on every real golfer’s short bucket list.

Other favorites I was also fortunate enough to play two of the resort’s other courses – No. 1 and No. 4. The former was designed by Ross and was the first track built at the resort, while the latter was originally designed by Ross and re-fashioned by Tom Fazio in 2000 as his tribute to the legend and to Pinehurst as a whole.

It all started on No. 1, which first welcomed players in 1898.

Dr. Leroy Culver built the first nine holes and John Dunn Tucker added the next nine, but it is clearly Ross’s touch that you feel on Pinehurst’s initial golf course.

The simple, yet strategic, philosophy that informed Ross’s later design work is very much in evidence on No. 1, which is all the more remarkable when you consider that this was for all intents and purposes his first design. Recalling his Scottish heritage, Ross made liberal use of bunkers, both across the fairway and around the green.

After his initial efforts reworking the back nine, Ross implemented changes on the front, and made further revisions in 1913, 1937, 1940 and finally in 1946, shortly before his death.

No. 4 combines Ross’s classic routing with Fazio’s contemporary vision. Fazio tipped his Tam-O’Shanter to the old master by incorporating crowned greens on many holes and the addition of more than 140 pot bunkers. These, combined with several sprawling waste bunkers and more traditional sand traps, give the track a dizzying 188 sand hazards.

Escape the winter out west

Sooner influence hard to miss in Coachella Valley

ith 130 or so golf courses in the Coachella Valley running between Palm Springs and Indio, there are lots of choices for those seeking to trade cold and snow at home for the warmth and sunshine of the desert.

And since “man cannot live by golf alone” (a rumor which may or may not be true), dining is a big consideration. The area fortunately also has some really wonderful restaurants to satisfy most any appetite, plus add in the wide variety of off-course activities, and the Coachella Valley is just the place for a winter getaway.

Golf in the Valley owes a lot to two almost-legendary Oklahoma club professionals, Ernie Vossler and Joe Walser. Their real estate development business was responsible for a number of highly rated courses around the state, including the one most often associated with them, Oak Tree National, site of the 1988 PGA Championship and last year’s U.S. Senior Open.

In the early ‘80s, Vossler and Walser, then working for Landmark Land Co., had the idea of developing high-caliber residential and resort courses in the desert of the Coachella Valley. They brought in top architects (Pete Dye, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus among others) as designers starting with La Quinta Resort, then PGA West, as well as one of the Mission Hills Country Club courses.

iar to television viewers of PGA Tour and LPGA Tour events plus exhibitions such as the Skins Game. Vossler and Walser helped put the Coachella Valley on the golfing map.

For instance, PGA West in La Quinta is best known for the TPC Stadium Course or as some call it, “Pete Dye in the desert.” It is perennially rated among the best courses in the world, and has the famous par-3 island green 17th hole called “Alcatraz” evoking similarities to Dye’s island-greened 17th at TPC Sawgrass in Florida.

Our attention, however, was drawn to another of the PGA West courses, the Nicklaus Tournament Course, which along with the Stadium Course, were the biannual venues of the PGA Tour Q-School finals. Perhaps not to be outdone, Nicklaus built not only one island green, but two more that, considering the bunker and water placement, play like islands. This is one tough test of your golf game and should you be a real glutton for punishment try the tournament tees at 7,204 yards with a fairly stiff stroke rating of 75.3 and slope of 143.

Playing from tees some 700 yards shorter, we still found hitting a drive off the generously wide fairways was almost a sure bogey… or worse. The green complexes are typical of Nicklaus designs of the late ‘80s (Nicklaus Tournament Course opened in ‘87) favoring a high left-to-right floating approach, just as Nicklaus played during his career.

Moving a couple of miles up the valley to Indian Wells Golf Resort, owned by the City of Indian Wells, we found two excel-

lent challenges in the Celebrity and Players courses. The Celebrity opened in 2006 and was designed by Clive Clark, a former European Tour and Ryder Cup player, who is now based in Palm Springs. He used streams and mounds and two split level lakes with waterfalls meant to attract your attention away from the job at hand of hitting greens and making putts, but it does make for a pleasant peaceful atmosphere.

A year later, play began on Indian Wells’ Players Course by John Fought, the 1977 U.S. Amateur champion and the 1979 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year. Fought is a player of high caliber which is reflected in this course.

For more traditional American fare, make a reservation at the bluEmber restaurant in the Rancho Las Palmas Resort in Rancho Mirage and order the molasses braised shortribs or the chili-rubbed chicken with griddled corn bread and green beans. We stayed at Rancho Las Palmas, so we had the chance

to try a number of their dishes — all were good and all worth ordering again.

If you are looking for an other-than-golf outdoor activity, there are miles of hiking trails in the desert and surrounding mountains and a good suggestion would be to try the trails around Eisenhower Mountain on the south side of the Valley.

Or should you rather ride for your desert mountain adventure, there are any number of Jeep tours. Ours was a fascinating trip over the 840-acre Metate Ranch property.

We visited a mining camp recreated in the foothills and a rebuilt Cahuilla Indian Village showing how the indigenous people lived. However, the most memorable part of

the tour was when we stopped and hopped out of the Jeep to stand on the San Andreas Fault which runs along the north edge of the valley. Talk about a conversation starter!

For serious shoppers, the El Paseo district is called the “Rodeo Drive of Palm Springs” with dozens of shops selling all the famous brands and designers, but the best part is window shopping is free so you don’t have to buy a thing to have a good time.

The Coachella Valley is a great place to visit this winter. You will be sure to build lots of lasting memories, such as the picture-postcard views of the surrounding San Jacinto, Santa Rosa and San Bernardino mountains.

booming Arizona golf keeps growing with new offerings in Scottsdale, Tucson by bill huffman

n the Sonoran Desert, where tall saguaros thrive among exotic golf tracts, there is a rumble that is growing. That sound can be linked directly to Arizona’s ever-changing golfscape -- from Sedona to Scottsdale to Phoenix to Tucson to Tubac and beyond.

Arizona’s world-class golf scene is all about new and improved, and it includes: *A $15 million renovation at TPC Scottsdale, “the home of the Waste Management Phoenix Open.” Indeed, the PGA Tour’s annual stop in Phoenix’s most super-chic suburb includes a major facelift to both the Stadium Course and its clubhouse. High-

lights include new greens, tee boxes and Augusta-white bunkers on virtually every hole, as well as a remodeled locker room, restaurant and other posh digs for the Tour players. They will visit Scottsdale early in the 2015 season, when the Valley of the Sun hosts both the WMPO (Jan. 26-Feb. 1) and the Super Bowl (Feb. 1).

*Even though Tucson lost the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship this past year, the civic group that hosted that annual event, the Conquistadores, have filled the void with the city’s first Champions Tour event. It might seem like a long fall, from the Young Guns to the Over the Hill Gang, but Tucson’s long-time tournament director, Judy McDermott, said the Champions might be a “perfect fit” for the Old Pueblo. The Tucson Classic debuts March 16-22 at Omni Tucson National, the former site of 30-some Tucson Opens, which the PGA Tour event was called once upon a time. “What we’re aiming for with the Champions Tour is a long-term relationship,” said McDermott, noting that the Match Play was supposed to be in Tucson for two years and ended up staying for eight years. *The latest craze in the game of golf involving Scottsdale is not a course but a man-made range called Topgolf, which is like video games that combine golf and bowling. Billed as “the nation’s premier golf entertainment complex,” Topgolf opened this past summer on the Riverwalk at Talking Stick Golf Club, right across the freeway from the Arizona Diamondbacks’ spring training camp. Topgolf features 102-climate-controlled hitting bays where players launch micro-chipped golf balls at dart-board like targets. Talk about cool confines and fantastic year-round fun, techno-crazed Topgolf is so popular in Arizona -- and the country -- that it soon will open a second facility in the Valley, in the Mesa suburb of Gilbert. Even people who don’t know how to swing a club are playing. *The newest of Arizona’s nearly 400 golf courses is Sewailo, a lush, desert layout by former player and current Golf Channel broadcaster Notah Begay. Built near Casino Del Sol on the Pascua Yacqui Reservation southwest of Tucson, Sewailo, pronounced “Say-whylo,” is managed by Scottsdale-based Troon Golf and features a desert flora-laced 18 holes of golf that can be stretched to 7,500 yards. The home of the University of Arizona golf teams, Begay said Sewailo is perfectly maintained and flush with brilliant vegetation in honor of the Pasqua Yacquis, whose storied history can be traced back to “the Flower World.” There are other new additions/subtractions, as Vista Verde Golf Club near the small retirement community of Rio Verde has gone from private to public and changed its name to Tegavah, which in Yavapai Apache lore means “gathering place.” There also are new courses under way in Wickenburg and Verrado. Oh, yes, and it’s no longer the Raven Golf Club at Verrado; just Verrado Golf Club.

To get a grip on everything that has changed, or will change, in Arizona golf since you last visited, including green fees that have leveled off or even dropped by 10 to 20 percent, consider this: While most of the country has been mired in a gloomy gloaming when it comes to participation, Scottsdale, and Arizona in general, continue to flourish, according to the National Golf Foundation. In fact, a recent market study by Sports & Leisure Research found that Scottsdale’s numbers during the peak season for 2014 (January-March) were especially up at 10.3 percent regarding number of rounds played, while rates per round stayed affordable with just a 1.9 percent increase.

Caroline Stoeckel, the vice president of the Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau who handles its golf division, said her people were “pleased but not surprised by the numbers.”

“The 2013 season was very strong, and it’s rewarding to see how our golf community has come together (in 2014) to share the data and benefit the destination as a whole,” she said. “What we are finding based upon this recent market research study is that golf travelers are attracted to Scottsdale by the same attributes that bring other guests.

adding some bold, new touches at Arizona National (the former Raven at Sabino Springs), as well as massive upgrades at the city’s five municipal golf courses – Randolph Park North, Dell Urich, Trini Alvarez-El Rio, Fred Enke and Silverbell – including new fleets of carts.

Phil Green, the COO of OB Sports, called it “fantastic” that golfers who visit Tucson can have such diversity, as the city munis are under $50 while its other more prestigious properties range from $75 to $150.

“The long, hot summer is behind us and peak golf season in the Arizona desert is fast approaching. There’s really nothing quite like it,” Green said. “The weather is ideal, the courses are in perfect shape following fall overseed, and there’s an embarrassment of riches when it comes to the quality of courses that are out there.”

Green is smack, dab down the middle of the fairway with that assessment. True, Tucson also can be a little pricey, but it’s probably 20 to 30 percent less than what you would pay in PhoenixScottsdale. And while Sewailo, Tucson National and the likes of Ventana Canyon, the Westin La Paloma, JW Marriott Starr Pass, Vistoso, and Dove Mountain (formerly the site of the Match Play) will cost you an average of $150-plus per round, there is moderately priced golf between $75 and $125 at solid/scenic layouts like del Lago, Saddlebrooke, Crooked Tree and Quarry Pines (formerly the Links at Continental Ranch). Or move up to The Gallery, another private club managed by Troon that has special deals for the public on its North and South courses.

What’s cool about the Old Pueblo is that most of its most storied resorts have all undergone million-renovations recently, including the JW Marriott at Starr Pass, the Hilton El Conquistador, Loews at Ventana Canyon, the Omni Tucson National, and La Palmoa Resort & Spa. Oh, yes, and did we mention that both the RitzCarlton Dove Mountain and Casino Del Sol also pulled down four-star ratings for their regal retreats?

Brent DeRaad, the president and CEO of the Metropolitan Tucson Convention & Visitors Bureau, traces his city’s appeal to its “unique and distinctive outdoor experiences.”

“Golf is certainly at the top of that list, along with hiking, biking and anything else that gets you outdoors and up close and personal with our beautiful city,” DeRaad said. “We’ve also got so many cultural and historical attractions, too, like Old Tucson and our ‘Best 23 Miles of Mexican Food North of the Border.’ ” DeRaad also is quite enthusiastic about the Champions Tour coming to Tucson National, noting that the course will be centrally located for the fan base, whereas Dove Mountain was a hike to the outskirts.

“Tucson National hosted over 30 (Tucson Opens), and a lot of those guys who won there years ago will be returning,” he said of the likes of such past champions as Tom Watson (1978, ’84), Craig Stadler (1982), David Frost (1988), Andrew Magee (1994) and Kirk Triplett (2007).

Northern and Southern Arizona also abound with awesome alternative golf getaways.
