Laboure Succession Now in Place A critical but often neglected need in all organizations is an orderly, planned succession determining who replaces whom – and when. As of last Friday, July 1, Jake Bombard now serves as the Executive Director of South Boston’s Laboure Center.

His highly regarded predecessor, Sr. Maryadele Robinson, will continue performing outreach duties at Laboure. Best of all, this orderly succession assures that Laboure will continue to benefit from the talents of both individuals.

Bombard, himself from South Boston, assumed the position as the Laboure Center’s Executive Director, effective last Friday, July 1. Jake has now officially replaced Sr. Maryadele Robinson, the much-beloved head of Laboure for the last 28 years. An orderly succession at Laboure is now assured.

Many congratulations, Jake.

And there’s more good news. Sr. Maryadele will remain active with Laboure indefinitely; her role will be as an Outreach Social Worker.

In her own words, she says, “I’m going to establish a program modeled on what Jack Leary once did – reaching out to family members – wives, husbands, children, grandparents - who are dealing with addiction among their loved ones.” As for the transition from her to Jake, she is emphatic that Jake is now directing Laboure.

The framers of the American Constitution were not perfect men, though they disagreed strongly, they consistently put the creation of a nation before their own personal desires.

They knew how to compromise and they created a system that relies upon the ability to do so.

Americans who look honestly at our history will see there have been many times when the ability to run the government has been more threatened than it is at the present time, but there were also periods of equanimity in which we as a nation understood divisions and were more interested in mending them.

America has been through a lot in the past fifteen years and is now at a crossroads of conscience. This is an intellectual point of view, the likes of which does not have a good track record in American history.

Who remembers the influence of the peaceful on our country, when compared with our weapons of war? Who remembers the quiet voice of compassion of the thinking man or woman against jingoistic nationalist

A Little Independence campaigns? We must realize that governments are not made by opinions, but laws, and laws need to be crafted by people educated and informed by their constituents. Perhaps everyone in the country besides Congress believes Congress is broken; but the reasons for failure are rarely discussed in detail. It is time to vote for the presidential candidate with the best fiscal policy for fixing the infrastructure of our country -not the one with the best one liners, or calls for more wars.

If we are honest about the need for real change at this time we will look first to the pernicious influence of money controlled by special interests who hire lobbyists in Washington.

The lobbyists in America are our unelected officials: crafting laws, influencing votes, and pre-deciding issues outside of the legislative process. For neither executive privilege or congressional action can get rid of the lobbyists. Only the American voter can do this. A similar case can be made for cleaning up the absurd voting system in this country. An executive can tell me the exact number of McDonald’s hamburgers sold

today with the click of a button, but we cannot get the voting machines to work right, or allow Americans to vote over a weekend.

Americans never pay attention to the problem until after the passing of a suspicious election- of which we have seen a few in recent times.

Never has there been a better time to ensure the voting process is secure.

The problem is bigger than voting. Whether it is corporate interests weakening environmental laws, the military industrial complex seeking the next over- priced miracle missile, unions advocating for special treatment of their workers, the NRA barking commands to militias, or big pharma searching for a kickbackeveryone can find a special interest to match a personal agenda. If Americans want to be the judge of what matters to our success as a nation, deeper thought about fiscal policy, combined with direct action on priorities is in order. We must examine the rhetoric that substitutes for common sense in the current climate of emotional button pushing and consider if those same arguments are preformulated by the lobbyist’s pen. Our freedom as a nation relies upon this critical thinking, which is so lacking in the current election.

Do American’s really care about the middle east more than our own schools? I think most parents can answer that question. Is the average American who patiently

waits while the infrastructure crumbles, appeals for a raise in the minimum wage, and wants the Federal government to fix the drinking water in dozens of cities asking for too much? The majority of Americans want Congress to pass sound laws that substantially improve the quality of life in our country.

Now is a time to search our conscience about the places in this nation that have been left behind, and find it in our hearts to help repair deep wounds that still plague the American landscape.

Just because the media is more interested in the fight between the left and right than examining fiscal policy that would heal our nation’s divides, doesn’t mean we have to be distracted. It is time for a little Independence of mind on the part of Congress, for leaders to step outside of their coveted positions to craft legislation that improves the quality of life.

Senators and Representatives: please, choose issues that force Congress to do something practical for our nation, and work together on a compromise to pass meaningful legislation.

When a contribution is offered to your office, consider the trust you have been given by the American people- the people whom you are elected to serve.

For no president, regardless of party or platform, can succeed in genuinely advocating for the American people if Congress is bought and sold.

She views her efforts and her role as “teamwork”, aimed at making Laboure’s future as successful as possible.

As many of you know, Jake Bombard had been working in public office – first, for Rep. Nick Collins and then for Sen. Linda Dorcena Forry. Jake himself ran for State Representative six years ago, just after getting out of college, which is when Sr. Maryadele met him. His schooling includes St. Augustine, the Collegiate Charter School and a B.A. from William and Mary in Virginia.

When the posting seeking Sr. Maryadele’s replacement went up in July, 2015, nearly 100 applied for the job. In fact, Jake contacted her after many of the applicants had been eliminated, to see if the position was still open. She had been impressed with Jake’s command of what he had so far accomplished. However, she wanted to be sure that Jake was not only a good person, but also could grow into the many responsibilities, and that he possessed strong leadership qualities. The interviewing process took several months; during that time, Jake convinced the Laboure staff and the people at Catholic Charities that he was qualified His candidacy was approved by everyone; Jake began the job of Executive Director in February of this year. Now, at the age of 29 – he was one of the

youngest to apply – Jake has fully taken over. As you can see, this was a year-long process, which is one important reason that succession planning is so essential. It takes time to get it right. There’s little or no room for mistakes.

Jake has gotten off to a fast start. His leadership has gained the support of everyone at Laboure.

He visibly enjoys working 100% in human service. He’ll start locally by establishing Laboure as a key resource for the West Broadway Development, where he was raised. In fact, his home was in the building on the exact lot where the Laboure Center now stands.

He’ll complete his Master’s Degree in Public Administration at UMass Boston this year as well. And most important, he has gained the confidence of everyone at Laboure and in the Catholic Charities’ head office.

As for growth, one example is for Jake to lead Laboure into playing a role in the proposed initiative on Boston’s homelessness problem – he is working with the Mayor’s Commission on this issue.

Jake, Sr. Maryadele, and the entire Laboure/Catholic Charities staff are to be congratulated on how well they have handled the Laboure succession. Every key organization in America could “go to school” on what Laboure has done.

Police Call: East Boston Savings

Several police vehicles with blue lights flashing sirened their way to the East Boston Savings Bank Branch at 708 East Broadway on Tuesday morning, July 5.

South Boston Online, which is located nearby, spotted four BPD vehicles. Two of these dispersed to drive around the neighborhood, as if they were seeking someone who was on foot. The Bank Branch itself was closed for a while, presumably to allow the police to investigate exactly what had happened. If it was an attempted robbery, this would be the third such incident in South Boston this year. The other two were suspected to be drug-related incidents.

Flags flew everywhere over South Boston all day long and into the evening on Monday, the Fourth of July – from the crane on the Reserved Channel to Old Glory on Dorchester Heights as the Esplanade fireworks began. It was a stirring sight from the Heights, the City of Boston’s highest natural point. The fireworks followed the Pops Concert’s “1812 Overture”, when all of Boston’s church bells are rung.

Opinion Piece - Much Ado About Nothing

Boston Latin School’s alleged problems overinflated by a few.

By Kevin Devlin The recent news about Boston Latin School was a total joke.

The cries of social injustice and the allegations of disciplinary disparities is a false narrative to appease a few disgruntled students.

“We must do all we can to change the climate of racial injustice that both students, teachers and administrators face in the Boston Public Schools on a daily basis,” said Jacqueline Rivers of the Ella J. Baker House.

That would be sad but it’s not true; totally exaggerated.

I worked as a Boston School Police Investigator for fourteen years (1981-1994) and had the opportunity to meet a

lot of dedicated teachers and administrators, as well as tons of good kids. The first day I worked was at the old English High School ‘Tower of Power’ aka the Big E located directly across the street from Boston Latin School on Avenue Louis Pasteur.

That day I discovered a student (he was white) rolling a joint in the back hallway near the gym. I took him to the Dean’s Office. He was sent home and had to bring his parents up for a school disciplinary hearing the next day. During those years I worked citywide for several years investigating incidents but also served longer stints at the Big E, Boston High, and West Roxbury High School.

I loved the Big E but “Westy” was a great school where the headmasters and deans of discipline worked closely with

Flash forward to the last few years. After I retired from the Boston Public Health Commission I worked as a substitute teacher. But things had changed. Students were in control now. They called the shots. Administrators cow tow to them. In many instances they’re not held accountable so without consequences for their bad behavior they’re emboldened to continue behaving inappropriately.

school police to keep the school under control. We didn’t view students by race or ethnicity but how they behaved in the school setting. If they caused trouble they were taken to task, disciplined and their parents informed. The students didn’t call the shots. We did. Nobody felt there was social injustice lurking in the shadows or students were unfairly treated.

They were all treated the same.

As far as sensing social injustice roaming the hallways I didn’t see, hear or sense anything to validate that allegation, because it’s non-existent, not even a factor in today’s Boston Public Schools. After all its 2016 isn’t it?

Just because a few students at Boston Latin complained about some ill-advised tweets from other students doesn’t mean the Department of Justice had to be called in to investigate and the headmaster ultimately resigned to resign. Some people like to exaggerate issues to gain notoriety and get their own way.

Making a mountain out of a mole hill is disturbing because it’s seems that in today’s America, the few seem to overshadow (the concerns) of the many.

And the much ado about nothing catchphrase is cast aside without due consideration.

Immigrant Dream Reveals Nation’s Greatness

Former Mayor of Boston and Former Ambassador to the Vatican When Mayor Martin J. Walsh announced that he was inviting me to deliver the city’s annual Fourth of July oration at historic Faneuil Hall, I was honored, grateful and overwhelmed.

Honored because I was aware of the historic significance of the event. I was aware that great leaders including John Adams, John Hancock and John F. Kennedy had been chosen to deliver the address in the past. And I was grateful because I love the city of Boston and its unique immigrant pride and history.

The immigrant pride I’m talking about is something I know about on a personal level, because my family is among the millions of American families whose ancestors came to the United States in search of freedom, independence and opportunity. I also know about that pride and history through my public life because I’ve had the honor of leading Boston — a city of immigrants — as mayor.

Many of these immigrants defended a democracy that required law and order to survive — and to escape anarchy, division and violence in their homelands.

I have come to know so many people from countries around the world who have to come to America to enjoy the freedom and opportunity this country offers. These immigrants have worked hard, raised strong families, paid their taxes, defended this country and played by the rules.

The immigrants I’m talking about practiced what JFK famously said: “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.”

They came to this country because our Constitution guarantees everyone life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. They also came because ours is a country of laws that protect the innocent.

The truth is that it has been immigrants who have made this country great — and despite what you may have heard during this election cycle, we don’t have to make America great again — we need to continue to treat immigrants with dignity and respect so that we will keep the country great.

There is one area, however,

where we have to do more to keep America great — and that is providing quality health care for those who need it most.

As proud as I am of this country, I am disappointed with America’s health care system, particularly its lack of commitment and focus on child health.

If anyone cares to remember anything this old Boston politician ever said, let them remember this: America provides its citizens and its immigrants the opportunity to make their dreams come true.

But for far too many of our nation’s children, their dreams are impaired by poor health, poverty, abuse, lack of education and scant employment opportunities in the future.

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “The first wealth is health.”

Let’s provide the wealth of health for our people and especially our children. That is what we need to

The “Open Hearts/Open Homes” 2016 Gala The 2016 Gavin Foundation “Open Hearts/Open Homes” gala was an outstanding success. The high points of the evening were the welldeserved Gavin Foundation Awards: “Man of the Year 2016” to Congressman Stephen Lynch and “Caring Hearts 2016” to Sprinkler Fitters local 550. Some 20 dinner parties followed the festivities at the Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel.

by Rick Winterson Every two years, the Gavin Foundation, assisted by countless volunteers, puts on a gala fundraising party called “Open Hearts, Open Homes”.

Last Thursday evening, June 30, the biennial cycle came to pass once again. The gala party’s festivities actually comprised two hugely enjoyable events: the first was an elegant awards reception in one of South Boston’s many popular gathering points; the second was a series of dinners put on

by South Boston volunteers – hence the event’s name (and theme): “Open Hearts/Open Homes”.

This year’s awards reception was held at the Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel, in their third floor atrium area with its eye-catching skyline views to the west. True to its reputation, the Renaissance served a sumptuous spectrum of hors d’oeuvres. Music was provided by South Boston’s favorite duo – Bob Dunlap and Kathi Taylor (sometimes called “Bobcat” or “RedKat”). And it was a sold-out event, with more than 500 party folks packing in.

The friendly buzz welcomed everyone.

John McGahan, the President of the Gavin Foundation, gave a brief history of the Gavin Foundation, now over 50 years old. It was founded by John Gavin, who converted two

stories of his Fourth Street home into a kind of “live-in recovery center” for those trapped in alcoholism. Gavin House became a local standard for aiding those in recovery.

John presented the 2016 “Man of the Year” Award to our highly deserving Congressman Stephen Lynch. Steve thanked everyone for being there and saluted John McGahan’s recovery efforts.

Quoting Steve briefly, he said, “South Boston has gone from having nowhere else to turn to having a blessing like the Gavin Foundation in our community.”

Steve then introduced Boston’s Mayor Marty Walsh, who awarded the evening’s “Caring Hearts” Award to the members of Sprinkler Fitters Local 550.

He praised the union local for the immense amount of (free) work they have performed on recovery facilities, including Gavin House.

Accepting this award were Local 550 Business Agent Peter Gibbons and Mark Fortune. Fortune spoke eloquently of the tasks performed by Local 550, mentioning retired fitter Joe Dinato especially The party at the Renaissance concluded with a live auction of a dozen desirable items; among them were tickets to Big Papai’s last games, Christmas at the White House with Congressman Steve Lynch, and admissions to the Dropkick Murphys St. Patrick’s Day concert at the House of Blues. Ken Casey, lead singer of the Dropkick Murphys, was at “Open Hearts/ Open Homes” to assist skilled Auctioneer Kathy Kingston.

The silent auction was equally attractive, with items such as fine paintings and (believe it or not) a household safe.

The crowd then dispersed to the second part of the evening – dinners at homes and open spaces too numerous to list here.

What a great event! See you at “Open Hearts/Open Homes” two years from now in 2018.

By Kevin Devlin He’s a polite, shy, young teenager who enjoys living in South Boston. His name is Jack Feeney.

Jack, 14, is the son of Donna and Mark Feeney. He also has a dog he loves to pieces named Shadow, a black Labrador. After being schooled at the South Boston Catholic Academy he just finished the eighth grade at Boston College High School. He did well in school, Honor Roll grades, and loves going to science class. His favorite food is pizza, his favorite color is red, and his favorite professional athlete is Bruins goalie, Tuukka Rask.

In the world of sports, Jack started his adventures in the world of hockey when he was five years old and his parents enrolled him in the Learn to Skate program down at the Murphy Rink. Last season he played in the Pedro Arupe division at school and for the Bantam “A” team in the South Boston Youth Hockey League. He plays goalie and loves this sport.

Jack has fun playing baseball and his team is currently involved in the South Boston Babe Ruth playoffs. He’s on the East Boston Savings Bank squad managed by Bobby McGarrell and coached by Jerry Galvin and Billy Crowley. Jack is used as a pitcher and in right field.

“I like playing baseball,” he said. “I have fun and get to hang around with my friends.”

In his leisure time, Jack likes to play with his dog Shadow, play video games, and go to Ellis Haven in Plymouth with his friend during the summer months. He also enjoys reading and the last book he read was “The Diary of Anne Frank.”

Mandela Fellows Come to South Boston

by Rick Winterson Beginning last Friday, July 1, the Mandela/Washington Fellowship for Young Africa Leaders kicked off American Independence Day Celebrations at South Boston’s Paraclete Center. The Celebrations were held in McDevitt Hall, newly named (Friday, June 17)

by The Paraclete for Southie resident Paul McDevitt.

The Paraclete was one of the sites selected to work in partnership with Cambridge College, which is located just outside of Harvard Square.

The South Boston location was chosen because it is a good host site for demonstrating community service to the visiting Nelson Mandela Fellows.

Cambridge College is conducting a six-week institute for academics and leadership for 25 Mandela Fellows, who are some of Africa’s brightest young business leaders and entrepreneurs.

Approximately 1,000 of these Fellows came to the United States this summer, as part of President Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative. Cambridge College agreed to host 25 of them for this six-week institute. When the six weeks are complete, they’ll return to Washington for a Summit Meeting. Many of them will stay longer, for further professional development with private corporations, public agencies, and certain NGOs.

The credentials these Mandela Fellows possess are quite impressive. Despite their youthful ages, which range from 25 to 35, three-quarters of them hold mid-level or executive positions in their respective nations. Half of them have earned a graduate degree; over one-third of them operate their own businesses.

For almost all of the Fellows, this is their first visit to America.

Eileen DeMichele, the Executive Director of the Paraclete Center, expressed her delight in having 25 Fellows as guests, saying, “We were extremely excited to welcome … the Fellows for a day of service and community building … our students had the opportunity to listen and learn about faraway lands and how educational and business systems work in Africa.”

Tynan Summer Camp

Fun in the Sun Begins

By Kevin Devlin The Boston Public Schools may be closed for the summer vacation, but the community centers are open, and the “Fun and the Sun” summer camp counselors are busy keeping youngsters busy.

These summer camps, coordinated by the South Boston Summer Collaborative, are held

at the South Boston Neighborhood House (617-268-1619), the South Boston Boys and Girls Club (617-268-4301), the Condon Community Center (617-635-5100), and the Tynan Community Center (617-6355110).

“The South Boston Summer Collaborative is an association of South Boston’s leading youth serving agencies. The purpose of this collaborative is to provide…

members with opportunities for growth and development in physical, educational, social, and cultural skills.”

These sites offer a variety of programs for children aged six through fourteen. Overall, the four programs include sports games, gym, arts and crafts, games, education, swimming, swim lessons, music, storytelling, cultural projects, computer time, special events, and day trips.

“These summer programs are great for the children,” said Tynan Community Center Administrative Coordinator, John Lydon. “We keep them busy at the centers and they also go on field trips. The kids have fun by interacting with our camp counselors (all local kids) who do a great job keeping everyone engaged and happy on a daily basis.”
