South Boston at Its Best

here by Henry Knox from Fort Ticonderoga was solemnly dedicated on Saturday, June 4. That same afternoon, Phoenix MultiSports opened its doors and its free workouts to those in recovery. Also that same afternoon, South Boston’s MOMS Club held their Fun Day in Farragut Park.

There’s little or no question that South Boston is an extremely desirable neighborhood to live in.

We have become America’s urban hometown. What makes South Boston so special? Perhaps taking a look at the recently completed month of June will help answer that question.

June, 2106, was (as always) sandwiched between late May, which featured events like the opening of the Lawn on D and the solemnities of Memorial Day itself, and the weekend of the Fourth of July, when the Esplanade festivities took place and the Queen Mary 2 docked at Black Falcon. Well, this is a marvelous framework for any month, but it is not the month of June itself.

So, South Boston Online will confine our comments to days from Wednesday June 1 until Thursday June 30.

South Boston at Its Best Children’s Museum “Cool Ways to Play” gala. Thursday evening, June 9, the South Boston Collaborative Center gave awards to Cathe Walsh and Joanie Lynch for their long-term support of the Collaborative’s recovery efforts. On Saturday, June 11, the South Boston Arts Association watched double amputee Peter Damon demonstrate his art work at their monthly meeting.

The Police Department’s Frank Williams and Officer Roy began tennis lessons on Sunday, the 12th. Tuesday, June 14, saw a Flag Day flag-raising at the Neighborhood House.

On Wednesday evening, June 15, Medicine Wheel held its 25th Anniversary Party at Taj – Michael Dowling was honored as a “Medicine Man” for his vision. Friday afternoon, The Paraclete named its main hall for Paul McDevitt, to recognize the major support he has been to that organization. On Saturday, Dan McCole and his SBAA helpers completed their mural, “Landing the Curragh”, on the side of the McDonough Sailing Center.

The Notre Dame Education Center (the NDEC) graduated its largest class. The fundraiser at the McDonough Sailing Center was a resounding success.

The last Saturday/Sunday in June saw the Friends of Donnie Higgins Street Hockey Tournament. “Unity Day” took place at Old Colony Development.

Another high point of that weekend was the Anniversary Mass offered by Father Joseph M. White on Saturday afternoon, June 25th – Fr. Joe had reached 25 years as a priest. The month closed on June 30 with the Gavin Foundation’s “Open Hearts/Open Homes” gala at the Renaissance. Well-deserved awards were conferred upon Congressman Stephen Lynch and the Local 550 Sprinkler Fitters, followed by dinners at homes all across South Boston.

And now, rugby is even coming to South Boston. Yes, the month of June in the Year of Our Lord 2016 was quite a month. So now you know: In June, South Boston was at its best – its very best.

Fun in the Sun Camp

The Tynan kicked off its 2016 Camp Program with many enthusiastic boys and girls, ready to have “FUN”. Many campers have already enjoyed trips to the Condon Pool, our own make shift water slide in the playground, arts program, recreational activities, and much more.

The highlight of last week was our Friday Fun Sundae’s. The campers enjoyed creating their own ice cream sundae’s loading

them to the gill with hot fudge, sprinkles, whip cream, and candy.

Camper of the week was Tanny.

He has been coming to camp for the last 2 summers. Tanny is a quiet and fun kid to have. His favorite camp activities include: Playing pokeman, he is a whiz at Chess and enjoys the art program.

We look forward for many more adventures and off site trips in the near future.

Jake Bombard Named Director of SB Laboure Center

By Nicoleta Jordan Social services agency Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Boston (CCAB) today announced that current deputy director of South Boston’s Catholic Charities Labouré Center Jake Bombard has been named its new director effective July 12, 2016.

Bombard will succeed longtime director Sr. Maryadele Robinson, who joined Catholic Charities Labouré Center in 1988 and led the organization through a period of significant evolution. Sr. Maryadele Robinson will remain at Labouré and become involved in direct service, while continuing to help raise funds to support its programs.

According to CCAB President, Deborah Kincade Rambo, LICSW, “Jake’s political experience and strong ties to the South Boston community makes him a tremendous asset to our

Collins Votes to Support Street Grants Last week, State Representative Nick Collins joined his colleagues Massachusetts House of Representatives to pass transportation legislation on the Complete Streets initiative.

The bill transitions the Complete Streets initiative, currently a part of Chapter 90 funding, into a municipal grant program. This initiative aims to enhance safety and accessibility for multi-modal transportation which includes transportation geared towards pedestrians and cyclists. To qualify for the grant program municipalities must: Attend a training program; Adopt a Complete Streets by-law that has been subject to a public hearing; and Create a Complete Streets prioritization plan.

It was a great success, as George described his search for wildflowers located within the urban perimeter of South Boston. He had spotted and identified 75 distinct species.

A Wildflower Field Trip

Looking this set of three up in the Guide will show you descriptions and pictures of the flower you just examined (Example: “7-3-4” leads to the light blue chicory flower, sometimes mistakenly called a “cornflower”).

Now, George is dedicated to his profession, and he likes to spread the word, so he voluntarily arranged a follow-up field trip to Castle Island, where many of our local wildflowers are found. A group of ten hardy (and hearty) searchers gathered last Saturday afternoon, July 9, to carry out their own search, guided by George.

He had a handout and his reference book with him: “Newcomb’s Wildflower Guide”, 1977, Lawrence Newcomb.

Wildflowers are usually small, but very beautiful. Many have stories that go with them. Chicory was used as a coffee substitute during the Civil War and is still a popular hot drink in New Orleans. When dried, leaves from the tall yellow tansy are a good seasoning for fish (use tansy very sparingly – it’s strong tasting). Bayberry for scenting your soap is common on Castle Island. Nightshade, a plant with poisonous berries, is also found on the Island. Patriot QB Tom Brady will eat no plant cousins to nightshade, such as potatoes and tomatoes – Incas, Aztecs, Irishmen, and Italians would be very surprised.

Still a Major Port

Watching a fully-loaded PANAMAX container ship, just as it comes around the bend of the Castle Island walkway to the McCorkle Pier, is certainly impressive – like encountering Leviathan. As the full length of the ship appears, you get a look at how truly big (!) these container craft really are. But that’s not the end of the story. The ship shown in the photos, called a “PANAMAX”, was the widest that could pass through the Panama Canal until this year. The project to widen the Panama Canal has been finished so container ships twice that size can now come up the East Coast. Watch for them.

The Club’s Fun in the Sun

By Kevin Devlin Per usual I enjoyed my visit to the South Boston Boys and Girls Club as I walked around taking pictures of staff and Club members enjoying their time in the “Fun in the Sun” program. On the first floor of the renovated Club I saw kids playing on computers and engaged in various games. In the art room I saw youngsters listening to instructions from their art teacher and then they went about drawing and painting. I went into the gym and took and a couple of pictures and then downstairs to the pool and watched the kids splashing and swimming; and truly having fun.

Then I went upstairs and saw kids playing paddle ball, ping pong, hockey, and pool. Other younger kids were in front of a huge TV engaged in a dancealong. Across from this spacious game room were two rooms where kids were quietly sitting and watching the featured movies of the day.

All of them were happy, busy, and having a blast. I sort of wished I was a young again so that I could join them and have as much fun too.

SBOL Cares: So Does Susan Lenardis

Last Saturday, July 9, I was proud to accept an award on behalf of South Boston Online (SBOL) from Susan Lenardis, who was representing the Boston Housing Authority (BHA) as well as the Old Colony Task Force.

SBOL does care about the community and attempts on a weekly basis to highlight various events and people. We are proud to have been doing so for the past two decades. Just as proud as Susan Lenardis is caring about her Old Colony Development community.

Susan has been working part time as an administration support staff person for the BHA for the past twelve years. She is originally from East Boston where she grew up in the Orient Heights BHA development and served on their local task force with her mother and twin sister. Now, as a

2016 Club Cruise Sailed – and Jumped.

by Rick Winterson The boarding of the Provincetown II began at 6:30 p.m. last Wednesday evening, July 6; it embarked for the evening promptly at 7. The occasion: the 2016 Annual Boys & Girls Club Cruise – a South Boston fundraising tradition. This Cruise is named in honor of a departed Clubhouse Angel: It’s now called the Mary Binda Memorial Harbor Cruise You might recall the temperatures in Boston last week. They were blistering, peaking into the 90s on occasion; the weeknights, even after dark, weren’t much better. But an easterly sea breeze made the Cruise ever so much better. A Massport fireboat greeted the Provincetown II with 500 gallon per minute sprays.

The dancing was non-stop and enjoyable without anyone getting overheated – not that one would notice, anyhow. And the sunset – which resembled a tropical sunset in the tropics – was nothing short of spectacular from the water.

A word (or two) about the music on last Wednesday’s Cruise.

The Disc Jockey was that Boston institution Doug Lane, who spun and DJ’d for the dance crowd topside, on the Provincetown II’s aft deck. He didn’t stop once; neither did anyone in the crowd. And you probably know Doug from his WEEI 93.7FM affiliation,

where he is their Sports Technical Director. Doug is a double media threat, in other words.

Below decks, Joanne and Jethro Mills very capably handled the Karaoke session, also non-stop for the three-hour duration of the Mary Binda Cruise. Now it’s true that the talent over hours of Karaoke can be very, well, shall we say “variable”? And it was. But one young lady stood out. Dawnmarie sang with a distinct country tone in her voice; ir was a delight to listen to her. And that’s not all – Dawnmarie is the Music Director at South Boston’s Boys & Girls Club.

Boston Harbor is an especially scenic body of water, from the embarkation at the World Trade Center out to Boston Light and back again. Much of this is due to our Harbor Islands, dropped as the Ice Age glaciers retreated 6,000 years ago. The before-andafter lighting changes as the sun set over them lent a bit of magic to the Cruise’s and water surroundings. Castle Island – yes, it once was a real island – with Fort Independence vied with the Boston skyline as the most impressive sight.

He’s also WEEI’s Sports Technical Director – hey, it was a triple double.

As you can see, the party bunch began, well, partying, immediately after the 2016 Boys & Girls Club Cruise left the dock.

Taylor has been a Club member since she was six years old and really likes being part of the Fun in the Sun program. She enjoys going to the art room, the games room, and the education room so she can hang around with her friends.

She especially going to the pool and having fun.

In her leisure time outside of the Club, Taylor loves watching movies at home with her family, going to her friend’s house or hanging out with her aunt. If she was the President of the United States, she said m she’d, “Do good stuff for good people and try to help everyone have a good life.”

“I just passed my swim,” she said. “Now I can go in the deep end of the pool and have fun.

District Champions in Mayor’s Cup Savin Hill hoping to win another title at Moakley Park

By Kevin Devlin On Friday, July 8, in Charlestown, the Savin Hill Little League 9 and 10 year-old-team won the Massachusetts Little League District 9 Championship. They defeated Charlestown and then South Boston before they cruised to a 13-3 victory against their foe from Allston-Brighton.

This was a sweet victory for the boys from Savin Hill, because after losing to AllstonBrighton the first time the two teams met in the Districts at Evans Field in South Boston, the Savin Hill team rallied to win two games in a row in the double-elimination tourna-

ment to capture the District 9 crown. The Savin Hill squad will be playing in the Massachusetts Little League Section 3 tournament which is being held at Al Festa Field in East Boston on July 13-16.

The Savin Hill team also played on July 9 and 10 at Moakley Park in the Mayor’s Baseball Cup Tournament.

The tournament continues this upcoming weekend at Moakley Park where nine and ten year olds from throughout the city will have the opportunity to play ball and win the coveted Mayor’s Cup Championship.

The 11 and 12 year olds will also be playing this weekend in West Roxbury at the Parkway Little League complex near Catholic Memorial High School for the Cup.

Pictured is the 9 and 10 year old Savin Hill team that just won the Massachusetts Little League District 9 title. The players are: Brian Allen, Joe Alves, Michael Bailey, John Driscoll, Braedan Finnigan, Emme Finnigan, Charlie George, Sam George, Martin Hughes, James McMahon, Andrew O’Connell, and Calvin Sullivan-Thomas. The coaches are Coleman Flaherty, Doug George, and the manager is Pat Ryan.

Pop Warner 2016 Season Starts Tuesday, August 2nd South Boston Pop Warner will start its 19th season on Tuesday, August 2nd at 6:00 PM at the McCarthy / Rosher Memorial Pop Warner Field next to the Murphy skating rink.

This will be the first practice for cheerleaders and football players.

Every August for the last 18 years, we start with the most important practices to prepare for the upcoming season. Coaches make a lot of decisions about positions and how teams are organized during the summer workouts. Make sure your son or daughter gets down the field. Most teams practice three nights a week in August. Once school starts, the practice schedule will decrease to two practices a week and one game on the weekend.

Home games are on Saturday afternoon and the later game under the lights at our field.

Our away games are typically on Sunday mornings / afternoons.

If you have not registered yet, will be holding registrations on Thursdays in July from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM at our field.
