Paraclete Names Hall for Paul McDevitt

Last Friday, June 17, South Boston’s Paraclete Center named its main hall for benefactor Paul McDevitt, a man whose spirit indeed partakes of The Paraclete (you might have heard that Paul hasn’t been well). The Paraclete’s yard was filled with Paul’s family and friends, pipes were sounded, and the naming ceremony began Eileen DeMichele, Executive Director of the Paraclete Center opened and capably emceed the ceremony. She welcomed those attending. Father Cyril blessed the occasion, as well as the newly named McDevitt Hall. Board Chair Joseph Harney formally dedicated the hall; Albert Kaneb paid a well-deserved tribute to his friend Paul McDevitt. Mayor Martin J. Walsh delivered a brief speech in praise of Paul and his
efforts. There is that well-known cliché about “seeing grown men cry.” Well, that cliché came true last Friday. Kevin Conroy was the piper. Poet Alan O’Hare read a verse in praise of Paul, while accompanied by accordionist Cullin Kadis. Rose Placid beautifully sang “Be Not Afraid” and “Amazing Grace”. The crowd joined in. A thank-you was given to the members of Ironworkers Local 7, who will fabricate the wrought iron gate in front of McDevitt Hall. The Paraclete staff presented a delicious collation afterwards. Paul prepared some remarks to close the naming ceremony. But his condition has robbed Paul of his voice, so his wife Suzanne Bump delivered his remarks after declaring her love and regard for him. The “Fright Island” Proposal: Part II (It’s Still “NO!”)
Last week (on page two of our June 16 issue), South Boston Online editorialized against a proposal to hold 18 performances of a ticketed, forprofit Halloween event called “Fright Island” in Fort Independence on Castle Island. “Fright Island” would be joint effort between local entrepreneurs and a Las Vegas event staging group; it would perhaps be somewhat similar to New Hampshire’s “Spooky World”; and it would take place annually for up to 18 years.
The Massachusetts DCR (Department of Conservation and Resources) is backing “Fright Island” as a way to raise what it refers to as badly needed state funds to further the DCR’s mission. On Saturday morning, June 18, DCR Commissioner Leo Roy, who was appointed by Governor Baker, addressed South Boston residents on “Fright Island”. Over a hundred people showed up, so the meeting had to be relocated from the Fort to the Murphy Rink. Roy insisted he was here to listen, and while the decision was his to make, he stated (several times) that he had not yet decided whether to approve the event. Commissioner Roy spoke about his three goals for the DCR – more collaboration, enhanced public service, and increased support for his agency. He specifically mentioned that the
DCR funding situation was worse than the recessions in the 1990s. He listed five DCR priorities – broader participation, fundraising, enjoyment, safety, and so on – and then opened the meeting for comments. The comments were notable because every single one of them was emphatically negative. The opposition to “Fright Island” by those who attended last Saturday’s meeting was 100% total. South Boston Online has already stated our firm opposition to “Fright Island” in the Fort (take it to City Hall Plaza). We’ll simply list a cross section of the comments made at the meeting on Saturday:

SBAA Creates Boathouse Mural
Dan and Dennis, officers and members of the SBAA (South Boston Arts Association), execute a 9-foot by 30-foot mural on the northwest side of the boathouse at the Harry McDonough Sailing Center on Castle Island. This mural, a very fitting nautical scene, is a replica of Irish artist John Skelton’s “Landing the Curragh”. Such an effort is just one chapter in the SBAA’s mission: Creating community art for the enjoyment and inspiration South Boston’s residents as well as its many visitors. (by Rick Winterson)

VSA Festival Celebrates “COOL Ways to Play”

South Boston is known for its celebrations. We call them “Southie times”; they celebrate many, many notable happenings - achievements, community awards, successful fundraising, lives well spent, and so on. On June 9, about 80 young students in Grades K, 1st, and 2nd from the Condon School on D Street joined with their counterparts from the Ellison Parks and Pappas Rehab Schools at a celebration called the “COOL Ways to Play” Festival. This Festival was held in the Children’s Museum by South Boston’s Fort Point Channel on Congress Street. What better place for a young peoples’ Festival? And the weather was perfect. VSA Massachusetts was the 2016 “COOL Ways to Play” Festival sponsor. VSA (does that stand for “Very Special Arts”?)

Massachusetts has partnered locally with the Condon School on D Street, just off West Broadway. The Condon kids take part in “COOL Schools” music and puppet programs, guided by their own teachers and teaching artists. Teaching through art engages the young students on many levels; this is especially effective in giving them a wider gateway to literacy. There are actually three benefits from “COOL Schools” – increased literacy and better reading itself, practice in the arts, and improved social skills.
So, at the end of each “COOL Schools” year, VSA has a Festival to celebrate the students’ achievements; this year of 2016 was no exception. As part of the 2016 “COOL Ways to Play” Festival, VSA put up an exhibition of works of art from Boston’s Henderson and Adams School. From that, the students then went on to create their own art. There were puppet shows and an area to create from cardboard. What could possibly be any better than cardboard to work with? It can be cut, shaped, painted, and recycled. It’s strong. And if a mistake is made, well, cardboard is also cheap. Just get another piece and start over. Of course, the students were treated to both breakfast and lunch as part of the “COOL Ways to Play” Festival at the Children’s Museum. What a great way to close out the “COOL School” year with VSA.

by Rick Winterson By any measure, reaching 25 years of constant, continuous service to a community is a real milestone, in the best sense of that metaphorical word. Well, South Boston’s Medicine Wheel Productions, which started up in 1991, has done just that. Medicine Wheel was always a team effort, but as you know, its founder and “Chief Energizer” was (and is) Michael Dowling. Just consider a few Medicine Wheel accomplishments. There’s an annual observance of AIDS Day on December 1, which attracts citywide attention. The next time you walk through the national Park on Dorchester Heights, take a brief tour through the nearby, one-acre, crescent shaped mini-park known locally as No Man’s Land. Think about emplacing an engraved brick along the path to commemorate someone you loved. Drop in to Medicine Wheel’s Spoke Gallery at 110 K Street, second floor, to see what local artists can do. And possibly you have heard about Medicine Wheel’s “Hand in

According to BPD Commissioner William Evans, his own officers are even more enthusiastic than Medicine Wheel’s young participants about “Hand in Hand”. Anyhow, last Wednesday, June 15, it was time for a “Major” anniversary party. And a “Major”, big-time party it was – combining fundraising, a superb venue at TAJ Hotel by the Public Garden, and a chance to honor Michael Dowling for all that he has done (and still intends to do) for our community.

Chief among the speakers was Mary Dowling, Michael’s mother, who still puts in a lot of time at Medicine Wheel. As the sun set on Medicine Wheel’s party, Eugene Kelly, one of guests, summed it up well: “I’ve been friends with Michael for 38 years. We have a bond – a steady friendship that would always stay special. He’s my brother.”
Adrian Walker in last Friday’s Globe wrote about Michael and Medicine Wheel in a column he called “The Power of Art”. Among the facts Walker pointed out were, “Primarily, (Medicine Wheel) uses art to bring together young people …” “Medicine Wheel’s alumni/ae now number in the thousands.” “Much of Boston … was represented at the gathering … “ And that kind of dedication will still mark Medicine Wheel’s efforts 25 years from now.

Around two hundred guests took part. The all-around views of Boston from TAJ’s 17th story top floor were magnificent; TAJ certainly lived up to its reputation for being among the finest host locations in all of Boston. The hard-working Board of Medicine Wheel certainly outdid themselves. And not so incidentally, the fundraising end of the evening was quite, quite successful. Naturally, the high point of the event was the tribute paid to Michael Dowling. He became one of his own Medicine Men. The program, emceed by Board Chair Mark McG-

A Young Boy Who Loves Playing Basketball

Undoubtedly Brayden’s favorite sport is basketball. He’s a smart player, quick, fast, a ballhawk, and has a good handle for such a young kid. He knows when to shoot and when to pass and isn’t selfish. Brayden plays at the West Street Park and at the Club.
He’s a happy, young boy who keeps busy in school and in the world of sports. His name is Brayden Buckley. Brayden, 7, is the son of Taylor Buckley. His grandparents are Jane and Tim Buckley. He’s in the first grade at the Oliver Hazard Perry K-8 School located on East Seventh Street in South Boston. The school’s mission is to allow students to develop critical thinking skills to facilitate their future educational endeavors. Brayden is an Honor Roll caliber student, loves math, and someday hopes to play in the NBA. His favorite color is white and his favorite foods are pizza and corn. His favorite TV show is “Alvin and the Chipmunks.” His favorite NBA player is Golden State Warriors star guard and reigning league
the Three Minutes of Fame program organized by the Junior Bruins.
MVP, Wardell Stephen “Steph” Curry II; and his favorite Bruins player is Patrice Bergeron. In his leisure time, Brayden enjoys going to the South Boston Boys and Girls Club. He plays basketball, floor hockey and hangs out with his Club friends. At home, he loves playing NBA video games on his Xbox. He also loves to read and is currently reading a book about the life of Steph Curry.

In the world of sports, Brayden is busy throughout the year either playing soccer, football, baseball, hoop, or going to the Murphy Rink to ice skate. Brayden is playing baseball this season in the local minor league and is used as a shortstop. He also hopes to pitch. He played quarterback in the South Boston Pop Warner Football League last fall. He also plays soccer at the Pope John Paul II Park in Dorchester and in the South Boston Youth Soccer League. And recently, Brayden skated at the TD Garden when he participated in

Tynan Magic Defeats The Tynan Warriors To Win Youth Hoop League

By Kevin Devlin On Friday, June 17, at the Tynan Community Center gymnasium, the Tynan Magic defeated the Tynan Warriors, 18-15, to capture the Under 12 co-ed instructional basketball league which was sponsored by the South Boston Community Development Foundation. SBOL’s playoff “MVP” was Michael “Noon-dog” Noonan. The defensive player of the league was Cailyn Noonan, the best behaved player was Dimitri “Mimi” Markos, the unsung hero was Mullen Byrne, and the most improved player was Keith Splaine. The main goal of this league was to give inexperienced hoop enthusiasts a basic understanding of the sport in actual game situations. This league was helpful because overall the players improved from the beginning to the end of the season. They grasped a better understanding of the three second violation in the paint, and what was and wasn’t a foul. They learned how to line up at the free throw lane and about basic game violations, such as traveling, back-court, palming the ball, double dribbling, as well as out-of-bounds and inbounds infractions. They were also occasionally cautioned by the referees that it was their job to play and not complain about the calls that did not go in their favor. They’ll eventually learn that giving game officials grief never benefits them in the long run. In the first semi-final matchup played on Friday, June 10, the Tynan Magic eked out a hard fought victory against the Tynan Thunder, 21-19. Leading by eight points, the Thunder closed the gap but ran out of time. For the Tynan Magic, Brayden Buckley scored 7 points while Aiden Young and Mullen Byrne scored six

The Tynan Magic led at the half, 10-8. In the second half, they had an 18-8 lead. But
the Tynan Warriors went on a 7-0 run late in the second half to close the gap to three, but unfortunately time was not on their side. The Tynan Magic went home as champions. Summer basketball begins soon and that means participating in the Boston Neighborhood Basketball League (BNBL) which begins in early July. Mayor Martin Walsh, the Boston Parks and Recreation Department, and the Boston Centers for Youth and Families (BCYF) have announced that registration is open for the 47 th annual BNBL season which begins on Tuesday, July 5. The BNBL is the oldest municipal basketball league in the country and is open to both girls and boys. This league features a Pee Wee instructional league, ages 6 through 11, a 13 and under, a 15 and under, and an 18 and under league. Games are played at BCYF community centers and selected city parks throughout the city. The BNBL predicts that over 1,800 players on 174 teams will participate in this league at their 23 sites. The league provides a safe and happy outlet for youngsters during the summer to engage in positive physical activity. In South Boston, the BNBL sites are the Tynan, Condon, and the Walsh Community Center gyms.
