Tierney Learning Center staff held a combination kickball-softball game, at Moakley Park with their youth members, before journeying across the street to the Center, to surprise outgoing Tierney Center director, Kristin Taylor, with a much-deserved farewell party. Kristin has been the director for the past three years and has touched the hearts of everyone she has come to known.

She is truly a special person with a caring persona and SBOL wishes her the best in her new endeavors. Below are direct quotes from those she has worked with at the Tierney Center.

Not only was last Saturday a fine of example of South Boston’s sunny summer weather, it also featured the next to last Concert on the Ramparts. These are presented by WUMB-FM, the broadcast arm of UMass Boston. We’ll remind you to think about spending next Saturday afternoon as WUMB’s guests at their last summer concert on Castle Island.

Pedestrian Signage Installed At K Street & East Broadway in Southie. This is careless behavior. They assume they’ll be okay but it only takes once to be wrong.

Cross within the crosswalks. Don’t be jaywalking or jay-running (hey I think I just created a new word).

At the beginning of the summer (“Yeah I’ve got a gripe June 23”) SBOL wrote about the danger to pedestrians when crossing the street at the intersection of East Broadway and K Street.

This intersection has a high amount of foot traffic and drivers need to be aware of this because sometimes they drive too fast without regard for pedestrians. On more than one occasion, I have witnessed drivers drive recklessly through this intersection as pedestrians were walking across the street and within the crosswalks.

About a fortnight ago, the Boston Transportation Department (BTD) installed pedestrian signage at this intersection to remind drivers to stop when they

see pedestrians crossing the street.

SBOL would like to thank the BTD for doing that and making drivers more aware of their responsibilities.

But let’s not forget that pedestrians also have a responsibility. I have witnessed pedestrians dart in front of, as well as joggers, run dangerously in front of oncoming vehicles at various intersections

Even when within the crosswalks, pedestrians should remain alert. When crossing the street (anywhere) keep your heads up.

Don’t be texting or looking down at your latest technological device whatever it may be. Lower the volume on your head phones. Be aware of your surroundings and oncoming vehicles on your left and your right. Be responsible because it’s your life.

The BTD will continue provide safety enhancements needed but it’s up to all of us keep everyone safe and secure the community.

Steve Sennet Making Good Progress Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Charlestown, where he is now undergoing a menu of highly sophisticated therapies. Steve has been told he can expect to leave Spaulding sometime late in September.

by Rick Winterson Perhaps you have heard of Steve Sennett. Maybe you know him. He’s 33, a born-and-brought-up South Bostonian, who most recently lived on East Second Street. Steve is a devoted craftsman, too – a member for the past 15 years of Local 17, Sheet Metal Workers. He’s a hard worker, well fitted for a craftsman’s life in the booming construction scene in and around Boston. In his spare time, Steve enjoys camping – he’s an active and enthusiastic outdoorsman.

On Sunday, June 26 – an even two months ago as you are reading this issue of South Boston Online – Steve suffered a violent, near-fatal automobile accident in New Hampshire’s White Mountains near Sculptured Rocks. He was returning from the outdoor scenes he loved to the craft work he had devoted his working life to in Boston. The car crash that almost claimed him ended those two key parts of his life.

A recovering Steve Sennett enjoys his first fine day outdoors with his Aunt Beth by the Spaulding’s harborside site.

Steve remembers little about the accident itself. There’s a vague memory of the med flight crew talking about what they could do to help him make it, along with a dim recall of the sound of the chopper’s rotor blades. He awakened two days later.

And there was no doubt of the severity of his injury – a severed spinal cord in the C5-C7 vertebral area, leaving Steve able to move only his head and

his arms. At this time, he also requires feeding and breathing tubes.

But there’s also progress to report – a lot of it. The med flight took Steve to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Trauma Center in Hanover, New Hampshire, where their systems, treatment, and caring personnel restored him to life (literally). After a month, he was brought down to the world-renowned

An important part of this progress is human. Steve’s loving mother, Karen Casey, and his step-father Bruce, plan to bring Steve to their home in Whitman. They will take responsibility for his long-term care, along with all of its extensive financial challenges. Steve himself is incredibly optimistic about his future (just check out that smile).

Despite his injuries and the many unknown complications to come, he is still an extraordinarily strong, good natured young man with a great love of life. He describes the challenge of living normally, and concludes, “How easily we take simple things for granted … but I have to keep a positive attitude.” Amen to that.

As you can imagine, Steve and his family can use a helping hand.

The second set featured Haley Chic, a recent Berklee graduate from Arlington, who sang and accompanied herself on acoustic guitar in the U.S. country & western genre. Her brother Paul provided rhythm support on the chair drum. Haley will be relocating to Nashville soon to pursue a singing career. She gave particularly strong renditions of “Folsom Prison”, “Wagon Wheels”, and Kris Kristofferson’s best known creation, “Me and Bobby McGee”.

Unity Day: 2016

by Rick Winterson Unity Day has become another South Boston tradition, especially within the West Broadway Housing Development.

The 2016 event last Saturday, August 20, was no exception. This is a celebration that is sponsored by the West Broadway Task Force, a highly active civic group presided over by our community’s own Betty Flaherty.

There were activities galore for all ages and tastes. The DJ played rhythmic dance music; a huge outdoor grille/kitchen served summer food. Of course, there were many things to keep the kids busy and happy. Mayor Marty Walsh put in appearance around noontime. And there were numerous officials and local organizations who exhibited their services and activities.

We only have room to mention a few: a booth set up by Sheriff Steve Tomkins had some very interesting information about law enforcement careers in the Sheriff ’s Department.

Notre Dame Education Center displayed their programs in English Language and High School Diplomas. The South Boston-Seaport Catholic Collaborative was represented by its Pastor, Fr. Steve Madden, and Fr. Gerald Souza, who asked South Boston Online to mention their pilgrimage next Saturday:

Introducing Joseph Rocco

He grew up in Central New York but now hangs his hat in South Boston. His name is Joseph “Joe” Rocco.

Joe attended Oneida High School in Oneida, New York.

He played varsity football and baseball for all four years for the Oneida Royal Pride. He was a wide receiver and a center fielder in these respective sports. He was Tri-Valley First Team Player in both sports in his junior and senior years.

Joe graduated from high school in 2004 and studied accounting at Hartwick College, a non-denominational, private, four-year liberal arts and science college located in Oneonta, New York. At Hartwick, Joe was a fouryear starter on the varsity football team for his entire college career.

In his junior year, the Hartwick Hawks won the Empire 8 title, the first year the college captured the elusive league championship.

The team subsequently competed in the Division II NCAA tournament.

Joe graduated from Hartwick in 2008. He is now working as a certified public accountant in

I talk to the kids, tell a few jokes, make sure they’re having fun and enjoying themselves like they should be.

“The kids and the Little League coaches and managers are great to work with,” he further stated.

“The adults are dedicated to the kids and teach them the right way to play the game. They do a great job. I’m proud to be part of this league.”

He has lived in South Boston since 2010.

He began umpiring Little League Baseball when he was in high school. It was a voluntary effort, a community service he was glad to perform in his tightknit New York community.

“Everyone knew everyone,” he said. “The Little League players liked the idea of seeing the high school players umpire their games and we enjoyed it too.”

When Joe moved to South Boston, he immediately got involved and started umpiring games in the South Boston Little League. He is a certified umpire in the Eastern Massachusetts Baseball Umpires Association (EMBUA). And, he loves being part of this sports community.

“Once I stopped played sports in school, I wanted to stay involved,” he said. “By umpiring I get to be around sports and be part of the community.

Just recently, Joe traveled to Bristol, Connecticut, volunteering his time and energy umpiring nine games in the Little League Eastern Regional Finals Tournament. This regional featured six teams from the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic area competing in a double elimination event. He was chosen to be the plate umpire in the championship game that was seen my many Little League enthusiasts on ESPN. “I enjoyed the whole week,” he said. “And being on TV umpiring the championship game was really cool.”
