SB Graduate Receives $5,000 Award for College

Massport Awards Annual Thomas J. Butler Memorial Scholarship

and a mentor epitomizes what we were looking for when we established the scholarship in memory of our friend and colleague Tommy Butler,” said Massport CEO Thomas P. Glynn.

The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) today announced the recipient of the annual scholarship honoring the memory of Tommy Butler, the long-time Massport Director of Government and Community Affairs and son of South Boston. The $5,000 Thomas J. Butler Memorial Scholarship was awarded to South Boston resident Matthew McDonnell.

The Thomas J. Butler Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a student who resides in South Boston, is graduating from high school and has been accepted to an accredited college or university.

McDonnell is a gradu-ate of BC High, volunteers his time with the Curley Rec Center, and was a member of BC High hockey team since his freshman year. He will be attending UMass Amherst and is interested in Criminal Justice.

In his essay, McDonnell said he wants to pursue criminal justice and to one day become a detective in order to “make the world a better place and protect all my fellow Bostonians.”

“Matthew was completely dedicated to his duties and is a very mature, responsible young man.

Butler was the former mayor of the South Boston Boys Club, Youth Counselor and then Director of Little City Hall in Charlestown and former president of the South Boston Citizens Association and member of the South Boston Irish American Society. When he arrived at Massport in 1987 as a manager of intergovernmental rela-tions, he was a licensed social worker who had worked in the Boston Juvenile Court, and for the City of Boston.

2016 “Breakfast of Champions” Awards

Capt. Boyle said, “These days the police endure a lot”, but quickly went to thank South Boston for making the police feel welcome, and to state how grateful he was for the awards.

The Captain pointed out that Officer Lucas has for 20 years been just what a Police Officer should be – “Thank you, Bobby,” Boyle simply said.

The South Boston Community Health Center is an institution around here – that goes without saying (even though we said it). The Community Health Center’s concept of servicing health needs in an urban neighborhood has caught on. In fact, the Geiger-Gibson Community Health Center in Dorchester and our own at 409 West Broadway were the first two such health organizations.

Each August, the South Boston Community Health Center confers a set of awards upon those people, both inside and outside of the Health Center’s organization, who have supported the South Boston community in special ways.

They are called the “Breakfast of Champions” Awards, a humorous and memorable brainchild of the Health Center’s Margaret Lynch. And of course, ‘the title “Breakfast of Champions”

is based upon the well-known slogan for Wheaties, the American breakfast cereal.

This year of 2016, the “Breakfast of Champions” Awards were conferred at 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning, August 10, in the Health Center’s back lot facing Gold Street. Health Center CEO Bill Halpin capably fulfilled the duties of Emcee

for this event. He opened the occasion by stating that their National Association strongly encourages such efforts to reach out to their communities. Around 100 people were on hand; breakfast was served (of course).

Despite the tongue-in-cheek “Breakfast of Champions” title, these awards are serious and well-meant. They concretely recognize key people in the South Boston community, and the contributions those people make to our well-being. The first two awards were given jointly to members of South Boston’s Station C-6, specifically in the persons of Capt.

Two deserving members of the Health Center’s organization then received their awards: Chief Medical Officer Nisha Thakrir, M.D., and Ann Brady, Board Chair of the Health Center. Dr. Thakrir is completing her 12th year as Chief Medical Officer. One can only repeat what everyone already knows – her contribution has been “immense”, both to the Health Center’s staff and to the community. Ann Brady has likewise been a long-term member of the organization.

She was especially eloquent in her award acceptance speech, when she spoke of how devoted she was to the South Boston Community Health Center.

Emcee and CEO Bill Halpin closed the 2016 “Breakfast of Champions” by stating how proud he himself was of the Health Center’s staff, saying, “They are my second family.”

He then wished everyone a Happy National Health Center Week (which it was).

by Rick Winterson Last weekend, except for a couple of finishing touches, the brilliant and colorful mural along the east wall of Loco Taqueria & Oyster Bar was finished. It is the creation of Augstine Kofie, who was born and trained in art in Los Angeles. One key influence in his background was graffiti, in which he worked during the 80s and 90s. This exposure taught him the value of surfaces and use of multiple levels in large works.

Perhaps most important, his earlier work, when revisited, gave him an appreciation for selecting colors that change slowly with time.

Take a look at the east wall of Loco that stretches along F Street. Try to view it in the morning sun. Take in the deep, warm brown that contrasts with the planes of white and ochres varying from light yellow to almost orange – these are the colors of

new construction, of new wood, wallboard, fresh paint and plaster. Examine the geometry Kofie uses: his shallow, inclined planes give an almost restful look to the whole 10-foot by 50-foot mural; the short, sharp verticals are the actual windows in Loco’s east wall. In a way, this turns Kofie’s work into a kind of “installation”, which perfectly reflects the ribs, roofs, and structures of South Boston’s urban life and its lowslung artifacts.

And consider the genesis of Kofie’s mural. Kofie, his photographer friend Todd Mazer, and Loco co-owner Mike Shaw (“el jefe”) struck up a conversation over a beer at Loco one night.

One topic led to another, and the next thing anyone knew, Augustine Kofie was turning the east wall at Loco into one of his creations.

Dedham Savings Opens in South Boston

This Monday morning, on August 15 at 8:30 a.m., Dedham Savings (“your bank”) opened the doors of its Branch at 636 East Broadway for the first time. Six key Dedham Savings people did the honors (please see the photo above). At the end of the day at 4:30, they cheerfully expressed their satisfaction at how it all went.

Please note this was Dedham Savings so-called “soft” opening, but don’t be fooled by the word “soft”. They are fully opened, expertly staffed, and providing everything you would expect from a full-service branch bank.

The bank’s new quarters have an open feeling, with an unobtrusive but warm color scheme. The interior is clearly a place of business, but there are amenities – the Olympics were being quietly broadcast on the wide-screen and there are convenient rest rooms in an alcove off the main lobby. The branch’s service aspects seemed to be personified by the halfdozen Dedham Savings people, who created the soft opening’s welcoming scene. As another example, one of the

n Tuesday, the BCYF Condon Summer Juniors Program was visited by the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department’s Community Affairs Officer, Deputy Stephen Fiste.

The 5 and 6 year olds were captivated by his stories and presentation. Deputy Fiste encouraged the young children, counselors and staff to respect themselves and others, mainly their parents and grandparents.

The topics of “Stranger Danger”, cyber bullies, paying attention in school, being good citizens and helping out whenever they can gave the kids lots of helpful tips and answers to their many questions.

Deputy Fiste also stressed the importance of “making good choices” even now in their young lives that will stay with them and help them prepare for good jobs in the future.

After, the group received Junior Sheriff’s badges, coloring books and crayons and took photos with Deputy Fiste. It was a great visit with a promise to return over school vacation! (Photo by Barbara Kelly)

welve charter boats and 50 teens caught striped bass to 39 inches, bluefish to 15 lbs and big black sea bass and scup in the 6th Annual Fan Pier Youth Fishing Tournament to benefit Save the Harbor/Save the Bay on August 11th.

This year’s tournament raised more than $10,000 to support Save the Harbor/ Save the Bay’s youth environmental education programs, which have connected more than 125,000 underserved youth and teens from more than 100 youth development organizations in 40 communities to Boston Harbor and the Boston Harbor Islands since they began in 2002. Included in this year’s tournament a “Juniors” division with six kids from the South Boston Neighborhood House, who caught black sea bass and scup with Captain Charlie Gibbons and first mate Striper Sam aboard the Belle.

Sen. Forry & Rep. Collins Secure Funds for South Boston in State Budget Secured: over $1.3 million in funding for South Boston programs and services!

Senator Linda Dorcena Forry and Representative Nick Collins joined their colleagues in the Massachusetts Legislature to pass a pass a $39.145 billion budget for Fiscal Year 2017 (FY17). The spending plan reaffirms a commitment to public health and safety, education, and family and youth services, especially in the areas of substance abuse treatment and prevention.

“I am proud of the results that Representative Collins and I were able to achieve on behalf of the South Boston community,” said Senator Linda Dorcena Forry.

“These state funds will allow

neighborhood programs to thrive and continue to serve residents of South Boston and provide an opportunity for a better future.”

“Many dedicated groups and advocates worked very hard to secure support in this year’s budget. Nothing is ever guaranteed and it takes strong advocacy in the House and Senate to deliver for our community, especially when there is a budget deficit,” said Rep. Nick Collins.

“Senator Forry and I are pleased to have obtained funding to ensure our community will have the services necessary to maintain a high quality of life in our neighborhoods for all citizens.”

With youth development a key priority on their agenda, Sen. Forry and Rep. Collins secured funding for the South Boston

Community Health Center’s Youth Ambassador Program and the South Boston Leadership Initiative, which provide leadership development programs for local youth. The FY17 budget also provides funding for transportation of local youth and counselors to and from Camp Harbor View in Boston Harbor.

To address important family service needs, Sen. Forry and Rep. Collins secured funding in the FY17 budget for four agencies that have demonstrated measurable impact on the South Boston community. The budget includes funding for Julie’s Family Learning Center which provides services to families and single mothers, helping them break the cycle of poverty. Senator Forry and Representative Collins secured funding for the South Boston Neighborhood House to provide for programming for elderly in the community.

The FY17 budget also allocates funding for the Labouré Center’s Recovery Connections Program which supports children and families affected by substance abuse. South Boston En Accion also received funding for the implementation of leadership training programs, English-Span-

ish/Spanish-English Immersion classes, ESOL classes and instruction in STEM studies for youth and families in South Boston.

With substance abuse at crisis levels across the Commonwealth, particularly relative to the opiate epidemic, Sen. Forry and Rep. Collins were able to secure state funding for the Gavin Foundation, the South Boston Collaborative Center and the Answer House to provide critical substance abuse prevention and treatment services.

Always considering public safety a priority, Sen. Forry and Rep. Collins also secured funding for dedicated police patrols along Day Boulevard.

Additionally, in order to support services and programs for the City of Boston, Sen. Forry and Rep. Collins helped secure roughly $182 million in unrestricted general government state aid for the City of Boston and an additional $216 million in Chapter 70 funding for the Boston Public Schools.

The budget passed with overwhelming support in both the House of Representatives and the Senate has been signed into law by the Governor.

PROGRESS ON REDUCING AIR POLLUTION

The Port of Boston is thriving. Boston’s 6th largest employer with more than 7,000 direct jobs contributes $4.6 billion annually to the Massachusetts economy. Every day, the Port of Boston is making a difference in people’s lives; the shoes we wear, the furniture we sit on, the cars we drive, the oil we heat with, the toys our children play with all travel through the Port of Boston. Massport’s Conley Container Terminal processed a record 221,014 containers in 2015.

Massport is working hard to balance our roles as an economic engine, a good neighbor, and an environmental steward.

In 2015, Conley Container Terminal received a national Breathe Easy Leadership Award for reducing harmful diesel emissions beyond what is required by law, and promoting clean transportation in the Northeast. Particulate matter at the Conley Terminal has declined 20% since 2011.

Clean trucks We replaced 60 old drayage trucks with clean diesel trucks at a cost of $3 million funded by Massport, truck owners

and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). As a result, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, hydrocarbons, and carbon monoxide have all been significantly reduced.

Clean cranes We’re using EPA funding to retrofit five diesel-powered rubber tire gantry cranes used to load and unload trucks and reposition containers within the yard at Conley Container Terminal.

The retrofitted cranes will conserve fuel, reduce noise and significantly reduce emissions.

Dedicated freight corridor We’re investing $75 million to create the Thomas Butler Freight Corridor which will eliminate 400-500 trucks through the neighborhood each day, create a sound barrier, and a 4.5 acre Memorial Park.

As the Port of Boston - the second oldest port in the nation continues to benefit the Commonwealth’s innovation economy and all of New England, Massport will continue to invest in environmentally friendly technology.

Last Friday, August 12, P&G/Gillette threw a combined party, picnic, and general good time for the Boys & Girls Club, which is located at South Boston’s Edgerley Family Clubhouse. The venue was Moakley Field – in the shady areas, needless to say. There was lots to do and lots to eat and enjoy.

obody figured the last place regular season team to be a factor in the 2016 South Boston Little League playoffs but they were indeed. The Marr Scaffolding Giants led by veteran players Bobby Delaney, Will Ahern, and Mike McNally, and shrewdly managed by Will Ahern, beat the first, second, and third place teams to win the title. They proudly hoisted the Little League trophy and marched triumphantly around the field to the cheer of their fans. Congratula tions to the Marr Scaffolding Giants for defying the odds and winning it all.

Tynan Fun in the Sun Wiffleball Classic

This wiffle ball game was really a highlight of my summer and I would like to thank everyone who participated and watched. As we approach the final few weeks of the program, I hope to see more fun games like this to keep everyone entertained. Lastly, I would love to give a special shoutout to our camper of the week, Alex!

(Jr. Camp counselor) On a warm, sunny day in South Boston, the campers at the local Tynan Fun in the Sun program used the heat to their own advantage. They originally planned to play a quick four –on-four game, but once one of them realized they had a rope in their backpack, they thought it would be a great way to make a field. On the side of the Tynan, across from the Gate of Heaven church, the campers began to think of ideas to perfect their new ballpark. Across the whole concrete field, ropes outlined the foul poles, along with the fences for homeruns. In addition to that, there were ropes that represented the audience in different parts of the ballpark.

On the third base line, there was a V.I.P. section where the senior camp personnel got to sit. Behind home plate were general admission seats for other jr counselors and campers. After the whole stadium was set up with a bullpen and bleachers, it was time to finally hear the words we all love to hear, “Play ball!”

At 1:05pm with all campers from the program in attendance and in their seats patiently waiting, camp director Chris Devine threw out the first pitch to Stephen Flynn, a perfect strike, down the middle of the plate. Stephen Flynn and Evan O’Connor were the two team captains. Evan represented the Chicago Cubs, while Stephen picked the Red Sox as his team. Each team consisted of four players with two counselors on each. The starting pitcher for the Red sox was Stephen Flynn. With an infield consisting of counselor Aaron Mulligan, Jonathan Walsh, Robert Wisniewski and Bobby Rehm. Flynn sure had some defensive talent behind him. The wiffle ball game began with a single by Evan O’Connor, right up the middle.

Batting second, Tynan camp counselor Joey Maiullari, stepped up to the plate. With the spotlight on him and everyone in the crowd watching, Joey used the first pitch to drive deep and way back into center field for a two-run homer. The first inning was owned by the Cubs who were sparked by a long, two run homerun.

The Cubs consisted of two counselors, Joey Maiullari and James Arlaus-

kas, and three kids, Evan O’Connor, Ryan MacDonald, Alec Burkett and Anderson Wisniewski. After one inning, the Cubs were winning 2-0, as Ryan Macdonald pitched a stellar shutout inning. In the top of the second with no one on, two outs, Joey stepped up to the plate. On the first pitch, he cranked another home run, just over the rope in left field.

Cubs were winning 3-0 in the second inning when counselor Jonathan Walsh stepped up to the plate. With everyone on base and three balls as the count, there was nowhere to put Walsh. This was the best chance for the Sox to come back as they had bases loaded. Walsh stepped and cranked a hard groundball down the third base line for a bases clearing double to tie the game at 3.

Going into the third inning, Evan O’Connor led off with a solo homerun to deep centerfield. After going through the whole order once, counselor James Arlauskas came up to bat with two men on base. Before everyone knew it, James hit a high-flying deep ball into the bleachers in the outfield. The Cubs were up 8-3, heading into the fourth and final inning. The Cubs looked to be in full control after another homerun by Joey Maiullari, who finished the game with 4 runs batted in. Then, in the bottom of the fourth inning, down 5 runs, the Red Sox needed a heroic comeback. With Bobby Rehm and Stephen Flynn on base, Jonathan Walsh stepped up to the plate. After two pitches, Walsh found one he liked, which he drove all the way back to the concrete behind the fence in left field for a three run homerun. Flynn sprinted around the bases to score another run. Walsh cut the deficit to two. With Robert Wisniewski and counselor Jack Feeney on base, Stephen Flynn doubled to drive in another run. Walsh once again came

up to the plate to slug a hard hit single to win the game in heroic fashion.

Red Sox topped the Chicago Cubs in four innings 9-8. Walsh finished the game with 3 homeruns and 7 RBIs. Arlauskas cracked 2 homeruns with 4 RBIs. Maiullari smacked 3 homeruns and batted in 4 RBIs. As a Tynan camp counselor, I would like to thank John Lydon and also a special thanks to the Tynan Council for the chance to share these great memories with the campers.

Reaching Out to Educate

The staff at the Notre Dame Education Center (NDEC) wants everyone in South Boston to know that they ever-ready to serve the South Boston community by providing “goal-driven education for adults and youth.” The Center, which was founded in 1992 by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, and who have taught in South Boston since 1860, is now located at 200 Old Colony Avenue. And next May will celebrate its 25 th anniversary in South Boston.

The NDEC provides Adult Basic Education (ABE) and preparation for the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET) which has replaced the former GED program. The NDEC provides four levels of instruction in reading, writing, math, social studies, science, and computer skills. The NDEC provides English for Speakers of Languages (ESOL) from basic to intermediate instruction to adults from more than thirty countries. Many of these students graduate to ABE and

achieve their academic goals in attaining their high school credentials. Help them to the next step for success in obtaining a job or going on to college or other training programs.”

Overall, the NDEC provides classes for over 400 students annually.

“We serve the community and are here for everyone,” said NDEC Assistant Program Director, Anna FernandezBuehrens. “We want to get the word out. Want people in South Boston to know we are still here at our new address and that the classes are free.”

HiSET. The NDEC also has a High School Diploma Program (HSDP) and the aforementioned HiSET, as well as the Postsecondary Preparation (HPP) for youth aged 16 through 24. Those enrolled in the HPP meet at the Joseph M. Tierney Learning Center.

The NDEC’s mission is to “provide students with the employability and career-spe-

cific training that will enable them to succeed” in life. These employment-related services include career assessments and counseling, job-search assistance, industry-specific panels, mock interviews, and internship opportunities.

“We want to help students achieve their goals,” said NDEC Program Director, Paula Jurigian. “Help them to

Meet Three Tynan Counselors

The youngsters in the Tynan Community Center summer activities program had fun playing a variety of games in the gym such as basketball, touch football, dodgeball, and floor hockey. Outside they played wiffleball, had a cookout, engaged in water balloon battles, and slid down the water slide. They took field trips and played soccer and hoop at M Street Park. The staff bought them ice cream and pizza and made sure the kids were happy and fully anticipated in activities, whether it was sports in the gym, or arts and crafts and board games in the Tynan cafeteria. This summer program is ending and three of the program’s junior counselors had a terrific time interacting with the kids and keeping them busy. They are Emma Brooks, Joey Maiullari, and Ashley Lavey.

Emma Brooks, 14, is the daughter of Thomas and Jennifer Brooks. She has a brother named Thomas, a sister named Jacqulyn, and two betta fish named Sushi and Felipe. Emma will be a freshman at Boston Latin Academy (BLA) in the fall. In the sports arena, she played first base and shortstop in the South Boston Girls Softball League and a defenseman in the South Boston Youth Lacrosse League for four seasons. She played in the South Boston Youth Hockey League for several seasons, was on her school’s varsity hockey team last winter, and also plays youth hockey for Charlestown.

Emma had a great time working with the kids at the Tynan.

“I think it’s a great program,” she said. “The kids can do a lot and they get to learn from other kids from diverse backgrounds. It’s a great experience and should help them later in life when they are looking for jobs and trying to fit in.

“They love playing sports,”

she further stated. “They play team sports and learn how to work together. We teach them to stay positive and not to give up when things get tough. We also encourage them to try different sports and see if they are comfortable with that sport.

They’ll never know what sports they’ll gravitate towards and be successful in it if they don’t give it a shot.”

Joey Maiullari, 15, is the son of Mary and Paul Mauillari. He has six siblings, Paul, Tony, Mary Rose, Erin, Lauree, Michael, and a dog named Dandy. Joey will be a sophomore this September at the Boston Collegiate Charter School (BCCS) which is located in Dorchester. In the world of sports, Joey has played hoop in the Gate of Heaven CYO program for the past decade.

He’s played Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball in South Boston, and last year on his school’s championship varsity baseball team. He plays second base. He also played in the South Boston Pop Warner Football program for one season and was used as a wide receiver.

Joey really enjoyed working as at the Tynan CC summer program, his second year as a junior counselor.

“All the kids love to play sports,” he said. “So we play various games for them in the various sports. We teach them the rules of the games, how to play, and guide them each day.

“We teach them to play fair,” he added. “Teach them how to play equally and be good sports while having a good time.”

Ashley Lavey, 15, is the daughter of Patrick and Susan Lavey.

She also has a brother named Patrick and a dog named Brady.

She will be a sophomore this September at the Boston Collegiate Charter School. In the world of sports, Ashley played in the Gate of Heaven CYO basketball program for four seasons. She also played second

base in the South Boston Girls Softball League for four years and was a South Boston Pop Warner Football League cheerleader for two years.

A rookie counselor just like Emma, Ashley had a mature outlook (also like Emma) regarding the youngsters in the program. “We had a tremendous amount of fun,” she said.

“The kids played soccer, base-

ball, basketball, and kept busy with arts and crafts. There was a lot to do.

“We wanted the kids to understand good sportsmanship,” she added. “We didn’t want them to get mad if they were losing in one of the games. We wanted them to just keep on playing as hard as they could and enjoy the competition without the anger.”
