Eversource’s South Boston Reliability Project by Rick Winterson
These days, the word “Infrastructure” is frequently heard. It means the buildings, equipment, and support services that are essential to smooth operations in our community, indeed in our entire civilization. You only really notice “Infrastructure” when it unexpectedly shuts down. Reliability counts. The new power substation being installed right now by Eversource on the South Boston Waterfront, by far the fastest growing urban neighborhood in the whole state, is a key example of improved infrastructure reliability. It’s possible that you haven’t noticed the construction site where the new Eversource substation is located. It’s in South Boston’s Marine Industrial Park on Seafood Way at Fid Kennedy
Avenue.. It’s gas-cooled, inherently isolated, and sited on a quite small construction “footprint”. It is in back of the Harpoon Brewery, nestled on the east side of the Ted Williams Tunnel’s ventilator building (another installation, by the way, that is an essential part of the South Boston Waterfront’s allimportant “Infrastructure”).
The project’s numbers are very impressive. Eversource is investing more than a hundred million dollars ($100,000,000) in this substation. In addition, Eversource also plans two other substations in the City of Boston – Allston/Brighton and East Boston. The substation on Seafood Way will step down voltage from 115,000 KVA to 13,800. Eversource serves 1.7 million customers in 140 communities throughout Massachusetts; continued on page 14
Pictured last Monday, August 1, at Carson Beach is “Team Southie” from the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) which competed against other DCR lifeguard teams from the Nahant and Revere beaches. The annual event featured life-saving techniques and distance swimming, giving the lifeguards the opportunity to show off their skills, but more importantly, to hone these lifeguard skills so they can serve and keep the public safe in an optimum manner.
