Lamonica Court Dedicated

espite Saturday’s heat, over a hundred people, including the many members of Paul Lamonica’s extended family, gathered at the Sweeney Playground on Fifth Street, between D and E Streets. The occasion was the dedication of the playground’s basketball court to the memory of Paul Lamonica, culminating in the formal unveiling of a plaque bearing the name “PAUL LaMONICA JR. COURT”.

Court Clerk (Civil) Michael Donovan capably emceed the dedication ceremony. He first introduced Mayor Marty Walsh, who stated how honored he was to be asked to take part. South Boston’s Rep. Nick Collins then spoke. He was followed by Paul’s daughter, Traci Lamonica O’Connor, who eulogized her father beautifully with her heartfelt words. Paul had passed away at age 61 from heart problems four years ago.

It was a fitting memorial event. Paul worked for the City of Boston for 30 years as a member of the Water Department. He was a fine athlete himself; he gave back by coaching young athletes. Paul was a South Bostonian. His only move was to L Street and he never left there. In describing Paul, Jack Mullen referred to him as “one of those all-around good guys”.

The Lamonica family gathered with Mayor Walsh under Paul’s plaque. The young family members then unveiled it, as Mrs. Cathy Lamonica and the rest of Paul’s family looked on.

Refreshments were served afterwards.

Rest in Peace Kyzr Willis The staff at South Boston Online would like to express their condolences to Missy and Ralph Willis, the parents of Kyzr Willis, Kyzr’s brother Ralph, and their extended family and friends, for their tragic loss.

Last week, SBOL had the pleasure of sitting down with Kyzr, his older brother Ralph, and Savannah Broxton, their cousin. Kyzr Willis loved watching professional wrestling on TV and listening to rap songs. His favorite colors were red, orange, purple, and blue, all Ninja Turtle colors. He enjoyed playing basketball, soccer, and lacrosse with his friends in his Dorchester neighborhood. He also liked to play hide-and-go-seek, his

favorite game. He enjoyed life and was a happy boy. His wide smile personified his happiness.

Words cannot rightly convey one’s feelings when a tragedy of this nature occurs. Thoughts cannot rightly comprehend what feelings Kyzr’s family is experiencing. We can only hope that God will keep them strong throughout and after this ordeal.

The Dorchester and South Boston communities are diminished by this but will provide support, sympathy, and love, thereby giving strength to his family and friends. Strength to remember his smile and his love of life, and by doing so, he shall be alive in everyone’s hearts forever.

Beloved wife of 54 years to the Honorable Michael F. Flaherty Sr., retired Justice of the Boston Municipal Court Department and former State Representative of South Boston. Devoted and adored mother of the Honorable Margaret F. “Peggy” Albertson and her husband Sean of Needham, the Honorable Michael F. Flaherty Jr., Boston City-Councilor-at-Large and his wife Laurene of South Boston and John J. Flaherty and his wife Margaret “Maggie” of Milton.

She lived for her children and grandchildren, loved her summers in Manomet, worked tirelessly for St. Brigid Parish as a Eucharistic Minister and volunteer. She reveled in Boston politics and was a loyal friend to many.

Lamonica Dedication A word about the PAUL LaMONICA JR. COURT: It is a regulation court, of course. Its surface is an eye-catching blend of blues and yellow, with white lines marking the lanes and circles.

That surface is a durable composition with a bit of “give” – a great surface to play on. Some folks like statues perhaps, but we think Paul is pleased with and proud of the court that was dedicated to his memory last Saturday, July 23.

A Birthday “Friendraiser”

Kathleen “Kathy” Bitetti is a multi-talented local artist, consultant, and curator. She has lived in South Boston for 20 years, pursuing numerous cultural interests that include public works of art, two of which are being created here in South Boston as you are reading this. Last weekend, true to her devotion to public art, Kathy combined a “Friendraiser” with her birthday brunch (Kathy is forever 29).

Now, a “Friendraiser” is a means of generating contributions on a small, intimate scale. About 20 of Kathy’s friends gathered at her place to assist with funding the two works of art mentioned above.

Such works of art are sometimes called “installations”. A better term might be “site specific art work”, because these creations are meant to “interact” in a highly specific way with their surroundings.

In this case, both works of art will be installed later this summer at points near natural bodies of waters

within Boston’s “Emerald Necklace”.

This two-fold art project is entitled “Tir na nOg”, which means (roughly) Land of Youth in Gaelic.

It is based upon an Irish myth about a sort of Paradise to the West where one can live forever.

The art work pictured, “South of Hy-Brasil”, is by Caoimhghin O Fraithile, an Irish artist from Limerick and Dingle, who has studied in the United States and has created site specific works worldwide.

He has received many awards; this is his first project in Boston.

A site-specific art installation by Irish artist Caiomhghin O Fraithile, who is creating it at a private site in South Boston for ultimate display in the Emerald Necklace.

The other Tir na nOg work is by South Boston’s Michael Dowling, the Founder and Artistic Director of Medicine Wheel Productions at 110 K Street, the lead organization for the Tir na nOg project.

Michael needs no introduction to Online’s South Boston readers.

His installation will be named “The Well House”, continuing the water theme and reflecting the design of a Medieval Irish reliquary.

“Unity in the Community” Means School Supplies

Sarah Smegal has lived in South Boston for ten years. She serves on the Boys & Girls Club Advisory Board. Sarah has watched more and more well-off people move into South Boston; she recently came up with an excellent idea.

Many young students in the City of Boston’s school system do not have enough school supplies. They are lacking certain basics, including pens, pencils, notebooks, scratch paper, and even backpacks. This is especially true among young students seven to 12 years of age. As just one example, in a very practical sense, not having a backpack means that necessary school books can’t be brought home – for obvious reasons, home assignments will then suffer (or not get done at all).

Sarah’s idea was to arrange a local, low-key effort to collect unused school supplies or raise money to buy them.

And she wasted no time in getting her idea off the ground. You can contribute to this fundraiser in two ways:

Look for cardboard boxes (see photo) in 19 locations around South Boston.

Introducing Jacqueline McDonald

“Soccer is a team effort,” she said. “Like I said about the other sports...I get to play on a team and be part of something, contribute, and again, make more friends.”

She’s a pleasant young girl who is enjoying life in South Boston. Her name is Jacqueline “Jackie” McDonald.

This summer Jackie is working as an office assistant (funded by the Department of Youth Engagement) at the Condon answering inquiries about the summer youth programs. She plans on spending her leisure time with her friends and family.

Jackie, 16, is the daughter of Sharon Reynolds and Edward McDonald. She has an older brother named Edward and a younger brother named Matthew. And, she has a family dog named Sammy, a brown and white Shih Tzu. Jackie attended Saint Brigid’s before she journeyed over to Townsend Street to Boston Latin Academy. One of Boston three coveted exam schools, BLA’s mission is to “...prepare students for higher academic study by challenging them with a rigorous curriculum” in Classical and Liberal Arts that “… allows students to become successful participants in a diverse and challenging society.”

Jackie’s an Honor Roll student with a 3.60 GPA. As a sophomore she took French. Latin, and math Honor’s classes, and this upcoming school year, as a junior, she will be taking

Jacqueline McDonald a French Honor’s class. Her favorite subject is English and someday she hopes to be a veterinarian.

In the world of sports, Jackie played in the South Boston Girls Softball League for three seasons before she played on BLA’s JV softball team in the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades. She is used at third base or centerfield.

“I like how you have to work together as team to win,” she said. “It is fun and I get to make new friends.”

Jackie started running track for BLA in the eighth grade, and competes in the 55, 100, and 600-meter events. As a sophomore she finished first in all three events more than once.

“I like running,” she said. “It relieves stress and if I win the whole team wins…and that feels really good.”

Like most Southie kids, Jackie played in the South Boston Youth Soccer League and started when she was only four years old.

“I like living in South Boston,” she said. “I like taking my dog out for walks around the neighborhood and going to the Lagoon. My family lives here and I have a lot of friends I can hang out with, have fun, and enjoy everything.”

Jackie’s dad Edward dearly loves his two sons but has a special place in his heart for her.

“She’s my baby girl,” he said, with pride. “She’s a great, great kid, polite, well-rounded, and studious. She volunteers at school by giving tours and being involved in other school

PROGRESS ON REDUCING AIR POLLUTION

The Port of Boston is thriving. Boston’s 6th largest employer with more than 7,000 direct jobs contributes $4.6 billion annually to the Massachusetts economy. Every day, the Port of Boston is making a difference in people’s lives; the shoes we wear, the furniture we sit on, the cars we drive, the oil we heat with, the toys our children play with all travel through the Port of Boston. Massport’s Conley Container Terminal processed a record 221,014 containers in 2015.

Massport is working hard to balance our roles as an economic engine, a good neighbor, and an environmental steward.

In 2015, Conley Container Terminal received a national Breathe Easy Leadership Award for reducing harmful diesel emissions beyond what is required by law, and promoting clean transportation in the Northeast. Particulate matter at the Conley Terminal has declined 20% since 2011.

Clean trucks We replaced 60 old drayage trucks with clean diesel trucks at a cost of $3 million funded by Massport, truck owners

and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). As a result, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, hydrocarbons, and carbon monoxide have all been significantly reduced.

Clean cranes We’re using EPA funding to retrofit five diesel-powered rubber tire gantry cranes used to load and unload trucks and reposition containers within the yard at Conley Container Terminal.

The retrofitted cranes will conserve fuel, reduce noise and significantly reduce emissions.

Dedicated freight corridor We’re investing $75 million to create the Thomas Butler Freight Corridor which will eliminate 400-500 trucks through the neighborhood each day, create a sound barrier, and a 4.5 acre Memorial Park.

As the Port of Boston - the second oldest port in the nation continues to benefit the Commonwealth’s innovation economy and all of New England, Massport will continue to invest in environmentally friendly technology.

Carson Beach Update: Featuring Deputy DCR Commissioner Matthew Sisk

As a continuation of Kevin Devlin’s feature on the McDonough Sailing Center at Castle Island, SBO sat down with the Deputy Commissioner of Operations at the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) Matthew Sisk to discuss what makes this resource so precious to residents in the city.

S.B.O.: How do you handle emergency communications between the guards and headquarters if they don’t have cells?

DCR Sisk: There are call boxes at all of our pools, and the guarded waterfronts have radios.

S.B.O.: I’ll start with the most important issue. Water quality nowadays is often taken for granted

by Bostonians as they head to the harbor, but as old timers know the water wasn’t always this clean.

DCR Sisk: (Laughs) We welcome all people to our beaches no matter what part of the city they come from.

S.B.O.: So how many lifeguards do you have on the beaches in South Boston?

DCR Sisk: We have a total of thirty between the three beaches.

Twenty are dedicated to Carson and Pleasure Bay and M street, with a surplus of ten who float from as far as Wollaston to Constitution Beach, depending upon need.

S.B.O.: It’s a fairly competitive job to become a life guard.

Can you explain for young people about the enrollment process?

DCR Sisk: Yes, it is. Becoming a guard is quite extensive.

Although we’ve done much better this year with staffing, it is always something we struggle to keep up staff. I remember as a kid being a life guard was a vaunted summer job, but because you can’t use a cell phone while you are on duty- it deters a lot of the prospects from taking the position. But the lifeguards we have chosen for duty are very dedicated, and follow the rules.

S.B.O.: I understand the training is pretty significant. What kind of training do they receive?

DCR Sisk: There is a considerable process. We have higher standards at the DCR for lifeguard training than the Red Cross, and

S.B.O.: How many DCR Rangers are dedicated to the beaches, and who handles cleaning up the beaches? I walk the beach front all the time- it looks great. Who is the on the ground manager of the South Boston Beaches?

DCR Sisk: Jim Stewart, the Beach Supervisor manages all the beaches in the South Boston and then some in the Dorchester Bay area- he covers a lot of territory.

We have close to seven DCR Rangers in that area with a few dedicated to South Boston. The cleaning of the beach is all done by the DCR. The operations staff is the biggest part of our staff, with many beach cleaners and facilities maintenance staff.

S.B.O.: I see these people playing volleyball- there are several tournaments now I think. So, anyone can rent the space on Carson?

DCR Sisk: We rent beach space for sports to groups; they need to get a permit. Of course any small group is free to go play a pick-up game.

S.B.O.:This year I didn’t see the kayaks there anymore, or am I missing something?

DCR Sisk:We don’t want people kayaking where the swimmers are, and we have moved the venue for that to another area- Constitution beach. Most of the recreational boating in South Boston is done around the Pleasure Bay area.

S.B.O.: When people look out to the islands, which are a shared resource with National Park Service, the city and various entities, they sometimes forget how close it is by boat to get to there. You give tours for kids of the Harbor Islands, but the access for free rides is kind of limited. Is there such a thing as free?

DCR Commissioner & Staff DCR Sisk: We have free boat days in the beginning of the season, and do tours through schools and community groups. We give thousands of tickets away a year for free ferry service to make sure kids are getting out there and exploring.

We have camping on the islands in yurts, both group and individual camps.

S.B.O.: No one ever thinks about boat activity from Carson, like they do McDonough Sailing Center on Pleasure Bay- or taking the boat from Long Wharf. South Boston Online covered that center’s activity in the last issue. Pleasure Bay is the place to learn to sail because the water is calm, and the Sailing Center is doing well.

DCR Sisk: Yes, it is safer than the outer harbor. We have a good partnership with the McDonough, and think that kind of training on Castle Island is great. It is all about access. If you go down to the beaches on the weekend now in South Boston it’s like Miami.

We’ve got a lot more activity around the beach properties: walking, running, biking and sports.

So now that the activity is greatly increased we actually have more to maintain in the harbor.

S.B.O.: My thing is just how cool it is to walk the whole inner harbor in South Boston. You can walk or run from the Castle all the way out to the JFK museum without interruption. This is a hidden oasis in the city.

DCR: Sisk Yes. But don’t forget the DCR has many properties in Massachusetts stretching all the way out west, down to Cape Cod and in the norther parts of the state. But here in the harbor we have Georges Island, half of Spectacle, and of course, we manage Castle Island property with the Castle Island Association. In the Boston area we are running Summer Nights program in the parks as well, plus all the pools.

S.B.O.: Spectacle has a beautiful visitors center and now that the trees are growing up its really a nice place to visit. A lot of people only ever get to Georges and Spectacle.

I mean, you guys did a great job on Georges with the Visitor Center, but there’s so much more there.

DCR: Sisk Yes, we are working on making people aware of all the islands.

Recently we’ve had press coverage in the Boston Globe on the increased visitor access to the islands. We’ve seen increase usage in the area of camping, fishing and sports activities on the islands. We want all the people from Massachusetts and beyond to come out and enjoy our parks.

Condon Juniors Having a Blast

The youngsters at the Condon Community Center “Fun in the Sun” program are lucky they have a group of dedicated camp supervisors who want to see them have a good time and enjoy their summertime experience.

The kids do have a ton of fun at the Condon and a ton of activities to keep them happy and engaged. “They enjoy the activity room, computer room, the playground, and especially the pool,” said Kristin Dowd, the Director of the Condon “Juniors” program. “The Condon Juniors program successfully finished two weeks of camp already,” she added. “Friday, July 8, was Pajama Day. The Children loved coming in their PJ’s and watching the movie Zootopia. Last week (July 11-July 15) was ‘Christmas in July’ week.

We read Christmas books, did Christmas activities, had a special visit from Santa and then watched the Polar Express movie on Friday, July 15. We wrote letters to Santa and he gave us a special treat. We also made puppet hats with Molly. “This week (July 18-July 22) is Olympic Week at the program,” she concluded. “And I know the kids and all of us staff persons are going to have a great time competing and just having fun.”

By Kevin Devlin Muhammad Ali recently passed away and the world mourned the death of this iconic fighter. James “Jimbo” Curran, a longtime, local boxing trainer, who currently oversees the South Boston Boxing Club, which is located within the Curley Recreation Center, saw Ali when he visited South Boston in October of 1972. It was a day he’ll never forget and that’s why he put together what he calls his “shrine to the greatest” at the boxing club.

The South Boston Neighborhood Development Corporation (SBNDC), the sponsor of the South Boston Farmers Market, will hold a Kids Day celebration at the market on August 1st from 1-4pm.

The market will run as usual from 12 - 6 pm, with regular vendors Freitas Farm, Wenger's Farm, and this year's new bakery vendor, PB Boulangerie.

In addition, 'More Than Words' will be selling books and 'Tea is the Way' specialty tea. We will be hosting students from the UMass Extension program providing food samples from 12-4.

There will be live music from 12:30-3:30pm, balloon twisting (and bunny petting!) from 1:30-3:30, a tidepool exhibit from 2-5pm, free bike repair education through the Boston Bicycle Union's 'Bike to Market' program from 3-6pm. Local organizations will host info tables with various fun filled kid's activites, crafts and giveaway from 1-4pm. Look out for a special appearance by the BPD ice cream truck!

Meet Kianna Young Young Lady to Attend the University of Alabama in September

She’s a mature, young girl who will be attending the University of Alabama this September. Her name is Kianna Young.

Kianna, 18, attended the John D. O’Bryant School of Mathematics and Science which is located on New Dudley Street in Roxbury. Founded in 1893 the school held several names and locations until its present address. It was renamed in 1992 to honor Boston native and educator, John D. O’Bryant, who was the first African-American elected to the Boston School Committee.

One of Boston’s three elite exam schools, the O’Bryant’s mission statement is to provide “…a diverse, supportive community of learners that engages in a rigorous and comprehensive Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics program integrated with Humanities.” This college-preparatory exam school helps their students realize

their potential and become the future leaders in our society.

At the O’Bryant, Kianna was an Honor Roll student with an overall 3.0 GPA. She took an AP history class and an Honor’s class in English in her senior year. She’s ecstatic about going to the University of Alabama and plans to study education and pursue a career as an elementary school teacher.

In the world of sports, Kianna played on the junior varsity softball team as a freshman and a sophomore. She played the outfield.

“I like the sport because it can be intense,” she said. “I like making plays in the outfield and I like being part of a team.”

Kianna was on the varsity cheerleading squad for four years, was named captain in her senior year, and loved every moment of this high school experience.

“I like everything about cheerleading,” she said. “I loved the stunts and cheering on our teams. I like being part of a team and the sisterhood it provided me.

“I wasn’t the most athletic cheerleader,” she added. “But I was selected as the team captain because of all the hard work and effort I put into it that

was recognized and acknowledged. It was an honor for me to named captain.”

In her leisure moments, Kianna loves something else; reading and helping friends. She enjoys sitting back and reading, especially Shakespearian plays, poems, and sonnets.

She readily admits it sounds nerdy but doesn’t care. She also feels that ingrained within her nature is an obligation, a duty to help those in need. Whenever her friends are struggling with personal problems at home or in school, she’s willing to lend a caring ear and help in whatever manner possible. When she does help it feels “awesome” to her.

She’s certainly a rare breed, a noble person, at such a young age.

Debbie Flaherty, who is a staff assistant at the Condon Community Center, enjoys working with Kianna.

“She’s worked here part time for about eighteen months,” Flaherty said. “Kianna’s an assistant director in the after-school program and a senior counselor in the summertime. She fits in perfectly to give all the kids she meets a great experience. She’s great and I love her. We’ve been so lucky to have such good, young people working here at the Condon.”

The Department of Play This Weekend

by Rick Winterson This is a call to all residents of the Andrew Square neighborhood, including those who live in Old Colony and Mary Ellen McCormack, a.k.a., Old Harbor.

Residents who are newcomers are welcome also, as are the Square’s long-term residents. People who work in or near Andrew Square, or who own local businesses, are also encouraged to take part.

Take part in what, you ask?

The Department of Play (how do you like that for a title?) is coming to town, or at least your part of the ol’ hometown.

They want to listen to Andrew Square’s stories – all of them.

South Boston Online will refer to the Department of Play as “DoP” for short. The DoP is bringing their mobile storytelling lab to the Andrew Square area for four days this weekend.

They would love for you to take part personally. Look for their inflatable “Mobile Storytelling Lab” at various locations around the Square.

All stories collected will be shared at a screening on Saturday.August 6, in Andrew Square (TBA).

The DOP, a Boston-based art collective, was formed in 2013 by Maria Vidart-Delgado and Katarzena “Katy” Balug. One of DoP’s key activities is the development of open spaces in an urban, citified community. In Maria’s words, it’s about having “different scripts” for urban living.
