Collins Laces Up for Veterans State Rep. Nick Collins recently joined his colleagues in the Massachusetts House of Representatives to skate in a charity ice hockey game to raise awareness of veteran’s suicide, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and other mental health issues stemming from service.

The game was organized by the Skate 22 Foundation, a Massachusetts based advocacy organization which raises awareness of the struggles that many veterans face upon returning home.

Their mission is to provide support, ice time, and skating equipment to veterans at no cost. They also organize volunteers to fundraise and participate in

veterans outreach programs. The name of the organization comes from the 22 veterans who lose their lives every day to mental health and other service related issues upon returning home from service.

“I am proud to stand with such a courageous organization in addressing the very serious mental health issues that many veterans face” said Rep. Collins (D-South Boston). “These kinds of events and opportunities help reaffirm our commitment to the wellbeing of veterans in this country and across the Commonwealth. I was happy to get back on the ice for such an important cause.”

Grade 6 students from South Boston Catholic Academy participated in a ‘mock trial’ (The State of Washington vs Marty Witch) at South Boston Court House on Friday May 13th, in celebration of Law Day. The trail was presided over by 6th grade student Molly Keenan under the direction of Hon. Michael C. Bolden, First Justice. The students received an interactive lesson on our justice system by participating in the mock trial as prosecution and defense attorneys, jurists and witnesses. Time for a Gripe

I shake my head in disbelief when drivers fail to use their directional signals.

I’ve written about this issue in the past and it’s still perplexing.

I just don’t understand why drivers hardly ever use their directional signals. It’s really disturbing as well as frustrating. Drivers must be either too lazy or too busy talking on their cellphones to be courteous and obey

the law. I guess it’s tough to make the effort when one hand is on the steering wheel and the other hand is holding a cellphone. But using your directional lights could easily avert an accident. That’s why it’s the law; for safety reasons.

Chapter 90, Section 14B states the following: Every person operating a motor vehicle, before stopping said vehicle or making any turning movement which would affect the operation of any other vehicle, shall give a plainly visible

signal by activating the brake lights or directional lights or signal on said vehicle; and in the event electrical or mechanical signals are not operating or not provided on the vehicle, a plainly visible signal by means of the hand and arm shall be made. Hand and arm signals shall be made as follows: 1) An intention to turn to the left shall be indicated by hand and arm extended horizontally. 2) An intention to turn to the right shall be indicated by hand and arm extended upward. 3) An intention to stop or

decrease speed shall be indicated by hand and arm extended downward.

Whoever violates any provision of the section shall be punished by a fine of not less than twenty-five dollars for each offense.

I just wish people would use their directional signals every time because it’s the smart thing, the right thing to do.

Artist and double Amputee Iraq Vet Guest for the Southie Arts Group The South Boston Arts Association is proud and very fortunate to have oil painter and double amputee veteran Peter Damon as the Guest Artist for the South Boston Arts Association’s June Meeting, Saturday Morning, June 11, 2016.

Sgt. Damon, retired, is an exceptional artist, an oil painter, and a severely wounded Iraq war veteran.

In October of 2003 he lost parts of both his arms while serving in Iraq as a helicopter mechanic in the military.

The accident killed his close pal, SPC.

Paul J Bueche 19, of Daphne ,AL. Since then, art has become a huge source of therapy for him, both physically and mentally.Peter’s website is dedicated to SPC. Bueche.

Painting has given Peter a new perspective on life and he has made a promise to his buddy Paul to make the most of it.

Peter and his wife Jenn recently opened a new art gallery. The ‘True Grit Art Gallery’ in Middleboro, Massachusetts.

Peter has his own blog site/web site - http://sgtdamonsart.blogspot. com/, and has been written up in: Time Magazine, the Boston Herald,

Boston Globe, Brockton Enterprise and the Middleboro Gazette. And he has been featured in the TV Documentary, “Aftermath”, The “Today Show” and “Homes for our Troops”

“Business Spring Fling” at Eastern Bank

It was simultaneously an event, a reception, and a celebration at the South Boston Branch of Eastern Bank last Wednesday evening, May 25.

Specifically, it was an evening to pay tribute to the strength of small businesses all across America – both locally and nationwide. May is “Small Business Month”; Mayor Walsh had previously paid tribute to the strength of

Boston’s small businesses by publicly stating that they provide 170,000 jobs in the City of Boston. It was a real “Small Business Spring Fling”.

In the commendably brief program, Eastern Bank Branch Manager Michele Hart welcomed her guests.

She reflected back on the six years she has served as Eastern Bank’s South Boston Branch Manager, focusing on the value of small businesses here, and Eastern Bank’s efforts to support

them. She thanked her staff for their own individual efforts.

Quincy Miller joined Eastern Bank just 90 days ago. He is part of Eastern’s executive succession planning, currently occupying the position of Vice Chairman & Chief Banking Officer. In his remarks, Miller also emphasized the value of small businesses to the Bank. He mentioned that Eastern Bank’s history goes back to 1818 – almost 200 years – and

that it is the #1 SBA lender in New England, as well as #10 in the entire country.

And of course, Eastern Bank’s “Spring Fling” was a great good time.

Leo Stapleton regaled the crowd with his guitar playing and singing. Marvelous hors d’oeuvres were provided

by Capo (another of our new small businesses). And all evening long, there was a pleasant “buzz” among the guests.

Massport summer jobs Last summer, a total of 320 area high school and college students earned a paycheck through our Community Summer Jobs Program. We funded more than 40 summer jobs in South Boston organizations including: Condon Community Center, Curley Community Center, Laboure Center, McDonough Sailing Center, South Boston Boys & Girls Club, South Boston Neighborhood House, Stretch Walsh Community Center, Tynan Community Center, and West Broadway Task Force. For many young people, these summer jobs marked the start of an educational path and a career.

Massport scholarships Next fall three high school graduates from South Boston will begin their college education with a scholarship from Massport including the Thomas J. Butler Memorial Scholarship named in honor of Massport’s Director of Community and Government Relations who made extraordinary contributions to the community during his years at Massport.

Athletic and youth enrichment programs Already this year, Massport has provided approximately $180,000 to support summer jobs as well as Youth Soccer, Youth Hockey, Pop Warner Football, Babe Ruth League, Gate of Heaven CYO along with tutoring, literacy and art programs at Laboure Center, Julie’s Family Learning Program, Medicine Wheel Productions, and Artists for Humanity.

Memorial Weekend, 2016

Memorial Day observances in South Boston actually stretched over four days, making it into a very full weekend of remembrance.

This is appropriate: Memorial Day (originally called “Decoration Day”) began 150 years ago in Waterloo in upstate New York – a key stop on the North’s Underground Railway.

On Friday morning, the Fallen Heroes (Iraq, Afghanistan) Memorial was dedicated on a plot of ground within John Hynes’ Seaport Square megadevelopment.

This Memorial consists of a simple but stately pentagonal obelisk, representing the five American combat arms. At its base, there’s a reflecting pool and steps, in and around which bright flowers were left. The Fallen Heroes Memorial is a result of dedicated volunteer efforts by local firefighters, police officers, Gold Star families, and veterans.

is the Garden of Flags – more than 37,000 American flags planted by volunteers, cascading down the western slope of Boston Common, below the Common’s Civil War Memorial.

Hushed passers-by speak quietly and take endless photographs of this striking sight. South Boston’s Andrew Square Civic Association has decorated the large planters in Andrew Square in a similar manner.

quarters for a Memorial Weekend observance, which began with a march down Fourth Street and up to the Vietnam Memorial in Medal of Honor (M Street) Park.

A well-drilled Color Guard was provided by our High School ROTC. Congressman Steve Lynch, Rep. Nick Collins, and the Hon. Ray Flynn were honored guests. A wreath was solemnly placed along with flowers, “Taps” was sounded, and brief remarks of remembrance were given by Congressman Lynch.

Unfortunately, drenching rain forced the cancellation of the

Memorial Day Mass and ceremony on Dorchester Heights on Monday morning. But loyal Ed “Butch” Shiflett made sure a memorial wreath was laid later in the day, after the rains had passed over.

Memorial Day in America solemnly commemorates our war dead – those who died in combat for our sake. To paraphrase a line from our National Anthem, “The Star Spangled Banner”, we are “The land of the free”, because we are “The home of the brave”.

And sadly, some of those who died in combat never made it back home. That recalls the plaintive Scottish ballad “Loch Lomond”.

The words “… and I’ll take the low road …” symbolize a Scottish soldier killed on foreign soil; “the low road” actually means that soldier’s grave. There’s a pious belief that the soul of a Scottish soldier killed in another country is instantly transported back to Scotland. “And I’ll be in Scotland afore ye.”

Please don’t ever forget.

Tynan Hoop Notes

Overseen by the Boston Centers for Youth and Families (BCYF), this BNBL Pee Wee Developmental Program begins at the Tynan Community Center gym on Wednesday, July 6. Boys and girls, ages 6 through 11, are invited to participate in this program.

This program helps youngsters develop the fundamental skills necessary to play team basketball. Participants will learn hoop skills through drills and game situations. They will then be placed on teams and play games in a non-competitive setting.

Contact the Tynan Community Center gym staff for additional information. The program is free for all Boston residents.

Introducing Jose Sotz Tierney Learning Center has the right man for the right reasons

If you want to learn how to navigate the internet, just stop by the Joseph M. Tierney Learning Center and introduce yourself to Jose Sotz, who is the center’s program technology coordinator. Youngsters and adults alike are welcome to use the state-ofthe-art computers at the center.

And the services provided are free to everyone in the South Boston community.

Sotz provides technical support such as how to set up emails and how to use and install programs. He teaches kids and adults how to use the internet to their advantage. He shows them how to digitally roam around the community, for example, how to access the Mayor’s website or the Boston Public School’s web track, video chatting with friends, searching for local news, and understand real time mes-

saging. He also assists in professional resume building and job referrals.

In addition to providing technical support, Sotz manages the building and oversees the afterschool youth program. The Tierney Learning Center partners with other agencies such as the South Boston Boys and Girls Club, ABCD, BCYF, the local health center, as well as programs such as the Young Ambassador’s initiative. employment program and the center provides teens with work experience in conjunction with their partners. This interagency cooperation results in better services to those they serve.

Sotz grew up in Cambridge and attended Cambridge Rindge and Latin before graduating from UMass, Dartmouth in 2007. He majored in the humanities and the social sciences with a minor in Spanish. He worked in the private sector for a few years, but in 2012, he became a full time employee at the center. He knew he belonged and had found a home on Mercer Street.

Sotz is a smart, enthusiastic young man who simply loves his job.

“I’ve always loved working with kids,” he said. “I worked a couple of summers with kids with special disabilities and knew I wanted to do more work like that. They’re good to work with. Kids appreciate you for what you do for them. It’s like unconditional love.

and helping people is the most enjoyable part. It’s rewarding in itself. I try hard every day and feel like I’m making a difference.

“There was an outcry from the community that the adults wanted help so we expanded the program to include them,” he further stated. “Adults can walk into the center between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. to use our computers. If they want individual help I provide one-on-one’s by appointment. I love being part of this community. I enjoy walking down the street and interacting with the adults. They ask me questions about different matters and I provide them with a lot of information they can use to better their lives. It’s great to feel wanted. I just love working here with the kids as well as the adults. It’s a family thing. and people in the community are very welcoming and accepting.”

Kristin Taylor, Director of the Joseph M. Tierney Leaning Center, realizes how fortunate she is having such a dedicated employee.

“Jose has been a valued member of the Tierney team for several years,” Taylor said “His commitment to the community and the youth he serves is apparent every day. Jose is a dedicated, compassionate, and persistent force who is a role model and advocate for all.

If so, please consider volunteering for the Castle Island Association (the other CIA), the volunteer organization that operates the activities within Fort Independence – guided tours (summer weekend afternoons), sunset viewings (summer Thursday evenings), and an annual gala Halloween Party.

First, a few historic facts: The first of eight successive forts on Castle Island was built in 1634, four years after the Puritans settled Boston.

Fort Independence was originally called Fort William, and it was on an island, later known as “Castle Island”. Even later, Castle Island was connected to South Boston by a bridge, a causeway, and then a fullfledged road (Day Boulevard).

Please be aware that volunteering for the Castle Island Association involves no heavy lifting. Anywhere from once a week to a couple of times a month, you’ll be asked to help out with tours of Fort Independence that take place from Memorial Day till October. You’ll be trained; you can start by assisting other tour guides (primarily keeping the tour guests together as the tour proceeds).

Think about helping out with the Thursday evening sunset viewings as well – they are beautiful. And if you didn’t already guess, please be assured that the Fort is closed on bad weather days – no need to bring your umbrella anytime you volunteer.

There is no better way to become acquainted with South Boston’s residents than volunteering – in many ways, South Boston is America’s “volunteer city”. And here’s another idea: If you are a young adult and

you need to write a college paper, or you need something to put on a college application, consider volunteering to help out at Fort Independence.

It is one of the earliest forts in the New World. Edgar Allen Poe (under an assumed name) once served there.

It’s the last place where the British set foot on Evacuation Day, March 17, 1776. It was once commanded by Paul Revere. The last Fort was built

by West Pointer Sylvanus Thayer.

The Massachusetts Port Authority will be constructing the Thomas J. Butler Dedicated Freight Corridor, a new 2/3-mile dedicated truck haul road (Dedicated Freight Corridor) that will allow Massport to remove all Conley Terminal container truck traffic from East First Street and portions of Summer Street. As part of this project, the Authority will also be constructing a new 4.5-acre community open space to be built and maintained by Massport. The Thomas J. Butler Memorial Park will serve as a significant noise and visual buffer for the adjacent residents and create a significant new amenity for the neighborhood. The Park will be primarily passive in nature and will include an end-to-end multi-use path, varied and extensive plantings, a concrete sound barrier along the northern edge, a security fence enclosure, and seating, lighting, bike racks, and other amenities. As part of the park and in conjunction with the community, Massport will reconfigure existing parking along the north side of East First Street to provide 95 parking spaces (13 parallel and 82 angled) along East First Street, which would serve both open space users and neighboring community. Massport’s contractor for this phase of the project is SPS New England, Inc. (SPS). SPS is currently constructing the Butler Freight Corridor and the Butler Memorial Park. This project completion date is expected to be in the Fall of 2017.

Four Happy Youngsters

They’re all smiles outside the Tierney Center Melvon Crump, Jayleen Perez, David Tito, and Justin McKelvert love living in South Boston and enjoy hanging out at the Joseph M. Learning Center after school.

All four attend the Paul A. Dever Elementary School which is located on Mount Vernon Street in Dorchester.

The Dever School serves families from diverse cultural, economic, and linguistic backgrounds. The Dever staff believes that all their students “deserve access to a world-class education that will allow them to excel in college, careers, and beyond.”

At home, these four wonderful youngsters enjoy playing video games and

watching TV. Their favorite TV programs are “SpongeBob SquarePants”, “Spiderman”, and “WWE Wrestling.”

They love eating a variety of food, including chicken and pizza. And, their favorite colors are red and blue.

Melvon Crump, 10, is in the fourth grade. His favorite subject is writing and someday he hopes to write a book and become famous. Jayleen Perez, 7, is in the first grade. Her favorite subjects are art, recess, and lunch. Someday she hopes to be a teacher.

David Tito, 7, is also in the first grade.

His favorite subject is art. Someday he wants to be a star on TV as a professional wrestler. Justin McKelvert, 5, is in K-1. He likes science and someday wants to become Spiderman and be a superhero saving people who need his help.

Mayor Martin J. Walsh is alerting Boston’s green thumbs that they have until Friday, July 8, to register for Mayor Walsh’s 2016 Garden Contest presented by the Boston Parks and Recreation Department with a grand prize provided by JetBlue.

Now in its 20th year, the contest recognizes gardeners who have landscaped, planted flowers, trees, and shrubs, and, in the process, helped beautify Boston’s neighborhoods.

Mayor’s Garden Contest Deadline is July 8

First place winners will receive the coveted “Golden Trowel” award from Mayor Walsh and prize packages from the Parks Department, Mahoney’s Garden Centers of Brighton, and other sponsors at an awards ceremony in August in the Public Garden.

First place winners in this year’s Garden Contest will also be entered into a drawing for a JetBlue Grand Prize consisting of roundtrip flights for two to any nonstop destination from Boston. Terms, conditions, and blackout dates apply.

Gardeners who have won three or more times in the last ten years will be automatically

entered into the Hall of Fame and will be recognized at the awards ceremony in late August.

These distinguished Hall-of-Famers will be ineligible to enter as contestants but are welcome to return as judges.
