Massachusetts Fallen Heroes Patriot Week got a pretty fine kick off on Armed Forces Day this past Saturday, with a celebration on Lawn D in South Boston outside the Boston Convention Center. The 2nd annual Patriots Festival brought thousands of supporters who came to honor the fallen, Gold Star Families, troops in service, veterans, and naturally friends and family of all the troops. Veterns of the post, along with elected officials and the Excel High School JROTC cadets, will gather at the post at 9:15 a.m. (at 715 East 4th Street) and march to Medal Honor of Park and then return to the post for a brief speaking program and lunch.

Over the years – nearly 20 of them - Kevin has been an extremely valuable contributor to our newspaper and its successes. In fact, Kevin was one our “originals”, when the publication first appeared in a print edition.

e often hear it said, “That our culture and times are changing and we have to accept it.” Yesterday, after all the Masses, we heard Fr. Frank Daly say goodbye to the Catholic parishioners of South Boston as he left for a new assignment as Pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows in Sharon.

When he delivered his farewell comments to the people, you could see many of the people wiping their eyes with tears of sadness. In such a short time, he made a big impact on people.

Father, who had been previously married, joined the priesthood after his wife and mother of his children, passed away. The community got to love his homilies about the challenges of raising families, but also hearing that with prayer and God, all things were possible. Yes, our society and culture may be changing, but our family values continue. But Fr. Daly’s emotional farewell to parishioners at St. Brigid and Gate of Heaven Church would not be the only event that made us all proud to be a Boston Catholic.

Yesterday after the 8 o’clock Mass at St Brigid Church, the 4th. anniversary of the passing of Navy Lt. Tim Cook was held in the church hall where 3 deserving young residents were recipients of part scholarships to Boston College High School. We witnessed all that is still great about our town and country. Tim was a graduate of B.C.High and U.S. Naval officer who after combat duty in Iraq, returned home, only to face new health challenges and passed away in 2014. But his life inspired his family, friends and neighbors to establish a scholarship in his memory. The Church community all took part in the special memorial Mass and ceremony which reminded us of Tim’s patriotism, friendship and contributions to others. It also inspired Veteran champion U.S. Congressman Steve Lynch and Fitzgerald VFW Post Commander Ed Flynn to keep fighting and advocating to help our veterans. But our day was not yet over, in his homily, Monsignor Liam Bergin, told us a story about a young Iraq man named Ragheed who he first met studying for the priesthood at the Irish Pontifical College in Rome in 1996.

A college where I took many visitors from Boston at about the same time, when I was Ambassador to the Vatican and living in Rome and knew all the students. Fr Ragheed was brutally murdered by ISIS terrorists in a Mosul Chaldean Catholic Church because he refused to close his Church. He became known as “Fr Ragheed of the Eucharist.” Iraq, once had 1.2 million Catholics, but today only has 400,000.

The 3 deserving young scholarship recipients, Tommy Casper, Eric Lopes, and JAMES McDonald will continue to carry on our great traditions. Yes, our city and culture is changing, but we still know where to go to be reminded about all the great people who work hard and sacrifice every day to help keep our neighborhoods safe and happy places to raise families. As I said today to Jimmy Donovan, “a Southie legend” who’s an usher and volunteer at the Church, maybe these special events we saw here today is the reason why we never move and so many others want to move in. “A community is still about people who care and people we love.

Ed Flynn Campaign Holds “Days of Action”

District Two City Council Candidate talks issues with residents, businesses; volunteers knock on 3,000 doors.

Ed Flynn and a team of 50 volunteers hit the streets of South Boston and the South End over the weekend, taking the District Two City Council candidate’s unifying message to thousands of residents.

“This election is an opportunity for the city of Boston to elect leaders who will work collaboratively to ensure the city continues to thrive economically while creating new opportunities for all residents,” Flynn said. “I am that type of leader and look forward to reaching out to all corners of Boston to address the important issues impacting all of our lives: economic development, jobs, public safety, housing, schools and transportation. Our district is leading the way on these issues, and I’m eager to get to work to improve Boston for all residents and businesses.”

Flynn and his volunteers hit the streets and went door-to-door, sharing his ideas on these and other issues.

In total, the campaign knocked on more than 3,000 doors over the weekend. The Flynn campaign staged the event out of the Iron Workers Local 7 Union hall in South Boston.

Flynn was the first of any candidate in the city’s upcoming elections to be certified for the November ballot. He also recently announced 10 major labor union endorsements, in addition to several endorsements from elected leaders, including

The National Guard, Army, and Coast Guard, were the most visible service members with soldiers on hand. Some service members had recently returned from tour of duty in Iraq- joined others serving stateside to meet and greet the public, and offer friendly support to the cause. They picked the cream of the crop for this casual detail, as when South Boston Online inquired about everything from the management of our harbor to individual tours of duty; these young men and women impressed with their knowledge, and easy comportment. This concerts kicks off an annual series of events that I suspect will continue to grow in audience as it is only in its second year, but has full sponsorship from multiple business and community groups.

In between the in-stage entertainment were video feeds

and photography on a jumbo screen from active duty troops overseas- wishing their families and the people of Boston well from their respective posts.

Some veterans’ groups and ceremonial units, like the Concord Independent Battery sporting original canons from 1814, added a feeling of tradition to the event.

While this was essentially a full day rock / country concert mingled with ample refreshments, vendors and support groups connected on the lawn taking contributions, and people exchanged stories of their own fallen heroes, or the living ones, who are putting their lives on the line for the nation.

All proceeds from the show are going to benefit the Massachusetts Fallen Heroes.

JFK is Still Relevant: And Remembered on His 100th

The avid interest and admiration for the Kennedy legacy is not misplaced, for though there are detractors, anyone who has lived in Massachusetts within the past fifty years realizes: not only

his weekend to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of John F. Kennedy, the museum and library that bears his name is holding a series of events-some educational, some fun, and others in memorial.

For the fading generation of World War II seniors and their children, John Kennedy left an indelible impression. From his fast ascendency as a young Senator to office of the president, to his tragically short lived term; it is both inspiring and heart breaking to know that world of dignity under pressure, and hope filled aspiration that was the new American century.

how our nation was shaped by this singular family, but how its political progress shaped this state.

The collection curators of the museum hope to bring into focus some of the early, perhaps lesser known aspects of young JFK, that should prove particularly valuable

for younger visitors who attend the celebrations. In JFK’s frail youth one would never have imagined the powerful and polished person he would become, but his particular gift of charming humor was in evidence rather early.

No doubt the Kennedy family was a handsome family, but the people who took their living portraits were excellent photographers as well-during their time hand held cameras with decent lenses had just come into vogue. JFK often knew how to get the best out of group portraits by drawing out individual personalities. There was a kind of perspective during this time of miraculous growth of America, and a new understanding of the modern presidency. From the space program to the cold war, the Peace Corps to the beginnings of Vietnam- events from his time reverberate down to us even today.

Much that was propelled by the short era of John Kennedy is still going strong.

While some of the Kennedy museum displays have a deeply familial feel to them, others are in the realm of public political worksand the more surprising parts of the collection have little to do with the Kennedy legacy. The Ernest Hemingway collection recently underscored the wide cultural net the museum casts, featuring thousands of photographs and manuscript items, drawings, paintings and other memorabilia.

What follows are some of the events planned for this coming weekend.

On Saturday May 27th, 2:00pm – 6:00pm there will be a Commemoration for the Peace Corps Community.

On Sunday, May 28, 2017, 12:00pm JFK 100 – Space Exploration Discovery Day: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow a space forum will be held that will feature NASA Spacesuit Engineer Su Curley 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.

The “Life Is Good Kids” Foundation Comes to SB A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

(The following is excerpted from a communication recently sent to South Boston Online. We received it from Kathy Lafferty, the Executive Director of the South Boston Neighborhood House – the “Ollie”.)

Early in 2017 in one of its shared joint meetings, the SBANP (the South Boston Association of Non-Profits) concluded that “Trauma”, especially among children, should be a focus - a top priority - in their community work. Think about it: Trauma in children can result from nothing more unusual than a major storm or an accident that causes a serious injury. Injuries can heal, but what about the psychological damage that follows after a child suffers a frightening event.. That’s “Trauma” – it can arise in kids living in our South Boston community as a result of crime, violence, poverty, family crises, and severe injuries.

So what is to be done when Trauma rears its ugly head among our kids? One positive step involves forming a community partnership with an organization called The “Life Is Good Kids” Foundation. Next week, the South Boston Neighborhood House is hosting a “keynote” gathering about this Foundation. That’s at The Neighborhood House, 136 H Street, at 10 a.m. The “keynote” is for everyone – parents, coaches, teachers, and caregivers. It is free and will finish before noon. The “keynote” is to be presented by Steve Gross, M.S.W., the Founder and Chief Playmaker of the The “Life Is Good Kids” Foundation. In the “keynote”, he will emphasize the power of optimism. By Richard Campbell As the South Boston Seaport is sprouting buildings and businesses at a maddening pace, it’s a good idea to review one of the pioneers of the Seaport renaissance, The Institute of Contemporary Art Museum. I’ll be the first to admit a lot of contemporary conceptual art strikes me as plain weird, but the current installations at the ICA have more gravitas than some of the works I’ve seen there in the pastand contain provocative pieces that are especially timely. The museum has a very friendly staff that interacts with patrons in an easy going way to bring out the stories of pieces by filling in details or pointing out aspects of the creative process one might not see immediately. The quirky architecture of the ICA still confuses me a little even after vising multiple times, but you must take a ride on the separate

Currently featured until July 9th is the exhibition of the James and Audrey Foster Prize winners, who are local Boston artists exploring a variety of complex subjects in larges installations that often include video as well as wall art and sculptures. The general description of the work emphasizes a “tactile approach to cultural, psychological, and historical resonances.”

It was the work of Lucy Kim from Watertown, MA that originally drew this writer to this collection, as her process of using live models with plaster to create sculptures that echoes classical wall reliefs: made from the bodies of a plastic surgeon, a fitness trainer, and a geneticist, are all complex reflections on the human body. They are powerful pieces that have a majestic quality.

Sonia Almeida, an artist who came from Lisbon who has been living in Boston since 2008 has work that fits more into print and design iconography to me- utilizing paintings and artist’s books in tandem to explore non-verbal communication. Some part of her works were like puzzles, or arrangements of a series that allow you to see a progression. Jennifer Bornstein’s room seemed very influenced by art in the seventies, particularly Segal’s plaster pieces, as well as wall rubbings that reminded me of Warhol’s silk screens. She also had video pieces of mice in mazes that were

bewildering and funny. People who remember doing grave rubbings as kids, or iconic jean jackets and objects of found art will appreciate her work especially. There is a playful, elemental quality to her work that kids will like, but upon looking closely you will find some pretty sophisticated processes created the drawings and sculptures- and some of the messages that accompany this are more serious than you might think. International artists Lucien Castaing-Taylor from Liverpool, UK, and Véréna Paravel, originally from Switzerland, based in Cambridge created a video piece Leviathan that was shot on a commercial fishing boat in New Bedford indeed had a “visceral” quality to it, kind of a cross between surgery and cleaning fish and is not recommended to people planning on eating seafood in the Seaport district the day of the visit.

An artist that was not part of the awards had a particularly large multi room showing. “Nari Ward: Sun Splashed” opened in April and features about forty works. This Jamaican artist has a myriad of talents including high resolution photography, sculpture, painting, and large scale installations casting a wide range of subjects.

Though much of his work seems to be about the culture of Jamaica in a humorous vein, there is a universal civil rights aspect to the work that speaks seriously directly to the world we live in. Issues like immigration, cultural identity, homelessness, and nationalist political dynamics run through his

works. “We the People” is a large wall sculpture of those words made with colorful thread and shoelaces. He uses a lot of recycled materials, and some pieces are amusing in a provocative way. The big snowman sculptures made of foam and recycled electronics, called “Mango Tourists” were imposing and odd. I really enjoyed “Happy Smilers” a complete architectural installation that was decorated with plants, firehoses, juice bottles a fire escape and had accompanying sounds- it had a distinctly Caribbean feeling to it. In the end of the day the world that is cast, painted, filmed, drawn and painted by the artists at the ICA gives one the distinct feeling that when we are not alarmed or provoked, we may be mildly amused.

The immersion experience of the ICA is different than most any museum you’ll ever attend, and after more than 10 years in its new location, it continues the tradition of supporting major living artists. Of course there are many permanent installations and works at the ICA, but these are the ones that will be featured in the next few months. Starting in June there are a series of dance and music performances happening on Thursday and Friday evenings, and Saturday afternoons. etirement parties are joyful celebrations – perhaps the single most joyful way to say “Goodbye” to a much-loved individual. Such was the gathering in the Seapoint Ballroom that celebrated the retirement of Mayra RodriguezHoward, one of South Boston’s many angels. Mayra was best known locally for her work at the South Boston Community Health Center (the SBCHC). Her creation, if you will – the Youth Ambassadors of South Boston.

words, but you could see from the variety of well-wishers who showed up how much Mayra will be missed. There were her colleagues from the SBCHC, of course, especially Linda Doran. Activists like Helen Allix and Ed Flynn were on hand; Ed presented Mayra with a certificate of honor from Rep. Nick Collins office during the program. Police officers from the Station Six Community Services office came by. Her family - her beautiful family - and many, many of her friends all showed up.

But most impressive of all were the past Youth Ambassadors who came – many of whom organized the party and prepared a feast for

the ages. These grown-ups once were “young adults” themselves, a.k.a. teenagers from 12 to 18, who wanted to have one, final party with their mentor, Mayra Howard.

They are now fully grown up, and party they did – Mayra was dancing right along with them to the musical spinning of DJ Crandon.

During the program, Mayra received a “Butterfly Wings” Award. This is a special Award within the Youth Ambassadors that is based upon the story/ legend about how the tiny breeze from a butterfly’s wing in Central America, at the right time and place, can lead to the most humongous hurricane ever

seen. This echoes an Award she received from the SBCHC ten years ago called the “Breakfast of Champions” Award – a box of Wheaties, with her picture on it.

During the program, there numerous comments that began with, “Over the years (15 of them) Mayra has …” You can add your own ending, because Mayra has probably done it already herself.

The program closed with a song recorded by the Youth Ambassadors called ”We Dare to Dream”.

And then the dancing began.

Underneath it all was a tinge of sadness, as there is at all retirement parties. But overall, it was a memorable and meaningful occasion.

Eastern Bank Business Appreciation Evening...

istory counts. This year of 2017 is the 200th Anniversary of Eastern Bank, which is the largest mutual bank in New England, and which has a branch in Perkins Square at 470 West Broadway.

In addition, May is Small Business Month. America’s small businesses have historically been the key source of job growth in the U.S., as well as becoming the seeds-and-roots of many high-technology global corporations.

So it was fitting that South Boston’s Eastern Bank Branch had another of its Annual Business Appreciation Evenings, hostessed and emceed by Michele Hart, Vice President and Branch Manager. In addition to her professional accomplishments, Michele is a Southie resident, the wife of Jack Hart, and the mother of four daughters.

Small businesses from all over South Boston showed up to enjoy hors d’oeuvres and networking. Mayor Walsh dropped by and spoke briefly about the value of businesses to the City of Boston, and entertainment was provided by Leo Stapleton and Johnny Kelly.

Condon Highlights Lots of great things happening at the Condon Community Center leading up to what promises to be a fun-filled and productive summer with many new programs, schedules and exciting partnerships.

MVP Summer Sports Program Putting the finishing touches on NEW Initiative – “Condon MVP Summer Sports Program”. An outdoor summer program running 6 weeks, July 10-Aug 18, MonFri, 10am-3pm for ages 10-14 to get neighborhood youth up and out, moving early with exercise and structured athletic clinics (lacrosse, football, basketball, hockey, soccer, tennis, etc. already committed) while providing them access to Condon pool and gymnasium. Also, offering guest speakers and field trips. Registration is this Thursday, May 25th, 6pm in Condon Lobby. Please bring a copy of child’s birth certificate, physical and immunization forms. SB Summer Collaborative Juniors Program This is the Condon’s Summer Program for 5 & 6 year olds running Monday, July 10th- August 18th. Registration is open now Monday-Friday, from 2pm-8pm.

Spots are limited. Please bring a copy of child’s birth certificate, physical and immunization forms along with a $50 deposit fee towards the $350 payment for 6 week program running July 10th-August 18th, Monday-Friday, 9am-3pm. There will be an orientation on Monday, June 19th at 6:30pm. This School Aged child Care program is licensed by the Commonwealth of MA Dept. of Early Education and Care.

Girls’ Leadership Corps Summer Positions, Ages 12-14 Limited positions available for girls ages 12-14 to work a minimum of 20 hours per week, Tuesday through Friday, 10am-2pm.

In addition to mandatory meetings, GLC members attend trainings & workshops, special events,

and lectures on issues that are specific to being a young woman and a leader. Field trips will be on Fridays. Observing Memorial Day as a nation

On Monday, May 29, Americans will celebrate Memorial Day. Unfortunately, traditional observance of this day has greatly diminished over the years. But it must be remembered, not just as a time to relax and cook a couple of steaks on the barbecue, but as a time to reflect upon those who sacrificed their lives throughout history. It must be remembered as a time to honor those who served their country, so that we could continue to enjoy our freedom and democratic way of life. It must be remembered, as stated by President George W. Bush, on Memorial Day in 2004, as a time when we honor, “All of our fallen soldiers, their commitment to our country, and their legacy of patriotism and sacrifice.

By giving their lives in the cause of freedom, these heroes have protected and inspired all Americans.”

Some consider Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, as the first observance of Memorial Day, when he dedicated a portion of the battlefield as a cemetery for those

who consecrated that soil in the sacrifice of battle. In 1865, Henry Welles, a druggist in Waterloo, N.Y., began promoting the idea of decorating the graves of Civil War veterans. On May 5, 1868, the Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic General John A. Logan issued General Order #11, his Memorial Day Order, designating May 30, 1868 as a day for “strewing flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country

observance, which was originally called Decoration Day until 1882, took place at Arlington National Cemetery. This cemetery housed the graves of 20,000 Union dead and several hundred Confederate dead. The South however refused to acknowledge this day until after World War I. At that time, this holiday was changed to encompass all those, in all of our wars, who sacrificed their lives for this great nation.

In 1950, Congress passed

This “Moment of Remembrance” is the least we can do for the men and women throughout history who sacrificed their lives so that we could continue to enjoy ours. during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land. In this observance no form or ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit.”
