Omni, along with their partners at New Boston Hospitality, are developing the fourth largest hotel in Boston in a prime location to serve the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center (BCEC) and the growing number of major companies located in the area. “This project is just one testament to Massachusetts’ leadership and competitiveness in the global innovation economy and tourism, attracting businesses and visitors from around the world,” said Governor Charlie Baker. “As state, community and private partners work collaboratively to advance this development, we look forward to the job opportunities and benefits it will deliver to the neighborhood, Commonwealth and region.”
Back by popular demand, the BCYF Condon CC and the Girls Leadership Initiative teamed up again to host another hugely successful Girls’ Group Paint Night last Wednesday. Over 60 girls gathered to create a masterpiece for the special woman in their life. T
he Gavin Foundation threw quite a party last Thursday evening. It was their 2017 Benefit Gala; it was called (fittingly) “Road to Recovery”. And it was a huge success. Quite notably, this event was held on the fifth level of the Design Center, which nestles between the newly christened Flynn Cruiseport and Flynn Marine Park. Sixty years ago, this building was the Boston Army Base. As a historical factoid, it was the largest office building in the nation at the time it was built. Now it is formally called “The Innovation and Design Building”. And to repeat, the evening was not only a successful fundraiser, it was hugely enjoyable. Arrangements for this particular locale were made by the team at Creative Office Pavilion. Working with the Gavin Foundation staff and volunteers, Creative Office Pavilion planned the Gavin’s “Road to Recovery” Gala. Indeed, they were the hosts, and very good ones at that. As usual, James Callanan from JCALPRO Inc. generously provided sound and striking lighting for the occasion. Some of you may not know much about the Gavin Foundation – much of what they do is confidential and anonymous. But you don’t have to be told about the opioid epidemic that is ripping lives apart in our City and our State. And you don’t have to be told about the havoc
The “Road to Recovery” Gala offered its guests superb food, music, and fellowship in the surroundings already described. However, the high point of the evening was the Gavin’s Award Program – a 30-minute, blessedly brief program filled with meaning. Janet Wu, noted writer, speaker, and journalist, moderated the program. She first interviewed Special Guest Chris Herren onstage. Chris was once a Celtic, who had great athletic promise until opioid addiction caused him to throw his basketball future away. He now runs a recovery program of his own and speaks in many places. Gavin President John McGahan conferred the 2017 “Caring Hearts” Award upon Ken Casey. Ken, the lead singer with the Dropkick Murphys, is so visibly outgoing and energetic that it’s difficult to believe he too was once in the grip of an addiction. But he was. On his “Road to Recovery”, Ken helps others – like arranging a recovery bed in Boston for a female addict from Michigan while he was performing in Europe (check that out on the map when you get a chance!). Governor Charlie then received the Gavin’s “Man of the Year” Award, also from John. This Award specifically recognized Baker’s successful efforts to maintain funding for combating the Commonwealth’s opioid crisis, which by at least one measure is the worst of any state in the country. In his remarks afterward, Baker recalled talking with opioid victims – a problem he didn’t know existed before he was inaugurated. Baker visibly choked up when he spoke of one constituent, who thanked the
Governor for keeping recovery funding, because he (the constituent) had lost a daughter to an overdose and didn’t want that to happen to any other father. The program closed with
a brief talk by a young man named “Jared”, an admitted alcoholic. He received a standing ovation for telling his recovery story. As we said, the Gavin Gala was quite an event!

Ed Flynn Earns Top Labor Support

These labor endorsements follow a series of top elected officials announcing their public support for Flynn’s campaign, including Councilor Michael Flaherty, state Rep. Nick Collins, SJC Clerk Maura Doyle and Suffolk Superior Court Clerk Michael Donovan. A lifelong resident of South Boston and 25-year veteran of the United States Navy, Flynn has built a strong coalition of supporters across the entire district, including the South End, Chinatown, Bay Village and South Boston.
Flynn, a state probation officer and member of the National Association of Government Employees, has a long history of supporting organized labor, including working for five years in the United States Department of Labor under President Clinton. In that capacity, Flynn fought for improved work conditions, access to affordable health care and to increase the federal minimum wage. “I’m proud to have received such strong support from the labor community,” Flynn said. “Boston is a city that was built by union workers and the need for employee protection is as crucial

Lifestyle: Art under the Stairs (cont.)

Find it if you can. by Rick Winterson “Lifestyle” is hard to define with any depth of meaning. Describing a lifestyle by saying, “It’s a way of life.” or “You know a lifestyle when you see it.” really doesn’t make the grade. As for the live jazz lifestyle, there has been a location for live jazz performances in South Boston for many years. And early this year, another space
for performing live jazz opened up. This space, in a local restaurant, was underground, once typical of the 1920-30s Jazz Era lifestyle. “Bootleg” did not apply only to alcoholic beverages. Last week’s Spring Stroll even featured a roving Dixieland Jazz quartet, who called themselves “The Late Risers”. And now a third jazz venue has come to South Boston. And it too is below ground. South Boston Online reported on this venue three weeks ago in our April 27 issue, page nine. The venue occupies the bottom of a stairwell at the Channel Center complex in Fort Point; it’s called “Art under the Stairs”. To make this completely clear, it is in fact underneath stairs (not “stars”). Perhaps surprisingly, the venue, i.e., the Channel Center stairwell, is very well suited to music performed by small ensembles. The stairs them-
selves serve as seats and equally as surprising, the acoustics are quite good. It is an intimate scene; it’s also plain-surfaced with no light coming in from the ouside, which completes the “just jazz” lifestyle effect. You go down to “Art under the Stairs” to listen – just listen.
a quartet – piano, guitar, harmonica, keyboard (organ); they sang their own vocals. They played everything from ragtime to rent music, standards to stage songs. The vocals were reminiscent of the music (and lifestyle) encountered at the rent parties of another generation.
Last weekend, Fort Point held its 2017 Spring Art Walk – an open gallery, original art event that stretched from Summer Street to the southern end of Channel Center. “Art under the Stairs” played its part. On Saturday and Sunday, two very talented small musical ensembles performed there, while Fort Point’s studio art galleries displayed their creative works overhead.
The second set featured Kathryn Howell with her stirring vocals and Roberto Mighty playing jazz guitar. Perhaps their high point, at least to this writer, was Roberto’s instrumental sequence of “Summertime”, followed by Kathryn’s vocal rendition. She even featured some be-bop embellishments in her singing (ah, how long has it been?); Roberto’s guitar work was nothing short of masterful.

Spring Stroll, 2017 Last Thursday, the South Boston Neighborhood Development Corporation and the South Boston Chamber of Commerce held their Third Annual South Boston Spring Stroll. It started off with a roving Dixieland concert by The Late Risers Band – trumpet, clarinet, banjo, and tuba. They featured an especially stirring, and rhythmic version of “Battle Hymn of the Republic”. Balloons were twisted into headgear by East Boston Savings Bank, adorning Angela Eastman’s daughters, Callie and Brooke. The Spring Stroll cadre of Donna, Lisa, and Karen gave out goodies from their table in front of the Library, which held a Book Sale. The 2017 Spring Stroll was a one-of-a-kind shopping experience, of course. Some thirty-three (33) establishments took part, all along East and West Broadway, from Dorchester Avenue to L Street – shop, save, sip, and savor. Just wait ‘til Spring, 2018.

SBAA Blasts Off at CAPO by Rick Winterson
The SBAA (the South Boston Art Association) has been a supporter of the arts in South Boston for more than a decade by now. As just one example, the SBAA has been actively working with Redgate/Hilco, the L Street Power Plant developers, to establish an onsite creative space for both studio and live arts. Last Wednesday evening, the SBAA held a party at the night club located in the lower level of CAPO on West Broadway. A great group gathered in a great venue for a ginormous gala. The music was by “Hogan’s Goat” – Bob Dunlap (guitar), Kathi Taylor (drums), Skip Toomey (everything else). There was a silent art auction, with original works by several important and creative local artists. The evening featured excellent, Italian-themed party dining by CAPO – a good time was had by all. South Boston is known for so many good things that it becomes easy to overlook the creative people who live and work here. Just consider The Distillery, 555 Gallery, Medicine Wheel’s Spoke Gallery, King Terminal Studios, Deb Putnam, Norm Trump, Dan McCole, and of course the many, many creative spirits and groups in South Boston’s Fort Point neighborhood. Taken all together, South Boston is one of the largest art colonies anywhere in New England.

Our day started with Mass at 9AM at St. Brigid Church, at which Father Casey was the celebrant and the 6th Graders did a wonderful job participating in and we all got a chance to greet Sister Evelyn, former First Grader Teacher, who is 102 years young, followed by a reception in the school gym, then classroom visits and a stop at the Art Show. Four Happy Club Kids By Kevin Devlin They love going to the South Boston Boys and Girls Club after school every day. They like hanging in the preteen lounge, swimming, going to the computer and recreation rooms, and playing a variety of games in the gymnasium. Outside of the Club, they enjoy hanging out with their friends, playing video games, playing tag football, as well as dodge-ball. They are happy young boys having a blast growing up in South Boston. They are Paul McGrath, Aidan Collins, Jordan Soto, and Desmond Ugoji. Paul McGrath, 12, is the son of Jen and Paul McGrath. He has two siblings, Caleb and Bella. He also has a dog named Lola. Paul’s in the fifth grade at the Condon Elementary School. In school, he is currently reading, “The Watsons Go to Birmingham-1963.” The book is a historical fiction novel writ-

Hinton wrote this book while he was in high school. He also enjoys the “Naruto” Japanese manga series, written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto. It tells the story of Naruto Uzumaki, a young ninja who searches for recognition and dreams about being the leader of his village. If Aidan was our chief executive living on Pennsylvania Avenue, he said that he’d, “Try to remove all guns, destroy them and eradicate all drugs.” Jordan Soto, 12, is the son of Brenda Monge. He has two sisters, Becka and Kaleen, a brother named Danny and a Chihuahua named Layla. He’s

Outside of school, he loves playing the game of soccer and has been involved in the game since he was two years old. “If helps you to keep your rhythm,” he said. “You can’t use your hands while kicking the ball, I like doing that.” If Desmond was the President, he said that he’d, “create more jobs, build more shelters for the poor, build more schools and have better lunches, make insurance cheaper, and destroy the terrorists by figuring out their weaknesses then attack them.”

Time to play ball

Last Saturday morning, May 13, South Boston Girls’ Softball (SBGS) held its opening day ceremonies at Shore Road Field, and subsequently had a kickoff fundraiser at the Seapoint Bar and Grill. This past Tuesday, May 15, SBGS began their season. After ten weeks of pre-season clinics at the Condon and Tynan Community Center gymnasiums, the players were ready to take the field. Schedules and roster information can be found online on the new SBGS website at www. southbostongirlssoftball.com. SBGS is still taking registrations for the 2017 season and accepts players 5 to 18 - as of 12/31/2016. There
are two 8-and-under (8U) teams, three 12-and-under (12U) teams, and two 15-and-under (15U) inhouse divisions. The league also has an 18 and under (18U) team that plays in the RBI Softball League. SBGS teams play against each other in their respective divisions as well as teams from across the city including Allston/Brighton and Charlestown. There are very few conflicts with other local spring programs such as Boston Youth Lacrosse, Miss Linda’s School of Dance, and Miss Jacquelyn’s. And no games are scheduled during any of these programs competition schedules or major events. BCYF Tynan Happenings The “Fun in the Sun” Tynan council summer camp @ the BCYF Tynan will be holding Registration this Monday at 6:30pm. The bcyf tynan offers an on-site program that includes a variety of activities, such as sports, games, arts & crafts, educational &cultural projects, special events and field trips. This project marks yet another major investment in South Boston’s Waterfront District; last week General Electric celebrated the groundbreaking of its new world headquarters just a few blocks away. The impact on the local economy will also include adding critical hotel capacity for the world-renowned BCEC, which will be connected via a pedestrian walkway to the new hotel. In addition, a number of local non-profit organizations will recieve a percentage of profits generated by the hotel. “Projects like this allow us welcome more visitors to greater Boston and showcase all that the Commonwealth’s workforce and economy has to offer,” said Lt. Governor Karyn Polito. “Across Massachusetts, our strong and vibrant communities are making advances in technology and innovation and ready to welcome the next generation of employers.” The hotel on the Massportowned two-acre parcel is expected to open in early 2021 and will be a one-of-a-kind, luxury Omni property with two towers defining its spot in the South Boston skyline.
“I’m excited to welcome this multi-faceted, new addition to our ever growing Seaport skyline,” said Mayor Walsh. “I applaud the efforts being made by Omni Hotels & Resorts to not only build great accommodations and spaces for visitors, but also support the neighborhood and the people of Boston by creating permanent jobs, giving back to local organizations and programs, and supporting minority-owned and women-owned businesses.” The proposed hotel design will feature a variety of culinary options, world-class retail and amenitites, including a luxury spa, elevated pool deck and fitness center. It will also offer more than 100,000 square-feet of flexible meeting and event space, inclusive of a 25,000 square-foot ballroom, as well as an event terrace. “Our goal is to help continue the transformation of South Boston’s Waterfront District as there has already been significant development over the last several years,” said Jim Caldwell, CEO of Omni Hotels & Resorts. “We do not take a cookie-cutter approach to our developments, and our new hotel will be designed to be a focal point and reflective of Boston and the Waterfront District. A key part that made the Request For Proposals (RFP) for this hotel project unique, and a first for Massport, was a new criteria dedicated to diversity and inclusion in all apsects of the proposals from financing, design and the overall team makeup. The Omni/ New Boston Hospitality proposal had the best combination and included minority-owned and women-owned businesses throughout their plans. “Massport feels a deep commitment to the people of Boston and our surrounding communities to deliver, not only world-class transportation services, but to best utilize our assets to serve the city and state,” said Massport CEO Thomas P. Glynn. “This partnership with Omni Hotels & Resorts will deliver much needed accommodation in the Waterfront District, allowing Boston to continue to gain prominence in the convention industry and better accommodate the growing number of visitors coming to do business in the city.” In April, the Massport Board of Directors voted to allow the Authority to enter into a development agreement and lease with Omni Hotels & Resorts to design and build a hotel on the Summer Street site. The agreement was made in partnership with New Boston Hospitality, comprised of The Davis Companies, Spot On Ventures, and a number of local minority investors who have pledged to co-invest in the project, as well as Boston Urban Development, a local minority and women-owned business.
