NDEC Celebrates 25th by Rick Winterson Time passes so quickly. Many remember Cardinal Cushing Catholic High School (CCCHS) for Girls; many also remember its transformation into the Notre Dame Education Center (the NDEC). Well, that undeniably took place in the spring of 1992; equally undeniably, that was 25 years ago. Thursday evening, May 4, friends and well-wishers gathered for a sumptuous banquet at The Venezia, to observe and celebrate the NDEC’s 25 years of service. At this point, a bit of history is appropriate. The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur (SND) were founded in Namur, Belgium, in the Year of Our Lord 1804 by St. Julie Billiart. Briefly, their mission was education, mostly of women who had no other option for obtaining necessary life skills, beginning with female fugitives fleeing the disastrous French Revolution. The good Sisters came to America in the mid-1800s, ending in Cincinnati after a trip that would have made Lewis and Clark’s journey into the North-

west look like a walk in the park. The Sisters came to Boston in 1860, establishing Sts. Peter and Paul High School, which ended up a century later as Cardinal Cushing Catholic High School for Girls (CCCHS). In 1873, they established the Gate of Heaven School (later passed on to the Sisters of St. Joseph), and then St. Augustine High and Elementary Schools in 1895. The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur have literally been interwoven in the education of generations of South Boston students. Even now, when local women are asked where they went to school, they often reply they went “to Cushing”. Twenty-five years ago in 1992, when CCCHS was closed by the Archdiocese, the Sisters opened the Notre Dame Education Center (the NDEC), in the same buildings on Lower Broadway that housed Cardinal Cushing High. The NDEC ‘s mission was adult education aimed at students who need GED diplomas, better command of the English lanContinued on Page 2
