Boston Bound GE and Celtics Join Forces

As you know, General Electric (GE) has opted to relocate its head office from Connecticut to South Boston’s Fort Point neighborhood. GE has submitted preliminary designs for their new headquarters building on Fort Point Channel, and they’ve begun relocating key personnel to their temporary headquarters on Farnsworth Street. Last spring, the Board of Directors of the National Basketball Association (the NBA) approved the use of corporate logos on the uniforms of any NBA teams that choose to do so. The Celtics announced their desire to join forces with a reputable corporation for this purpose, preferably a corporation with strong, identifiable ties to the City of Boston. They began to search for such a partner.

Last Wednesday, January 25, GE held a news conference in their Farnsworth Street facility. Its purpose was to announce a partnership between themselves and the storied Boston Celtics, Boston’s leading alltime championship team (17 banners hang from the Garden’s rafters). The news conference was led by Linda Boff, GE’s Chief Marketing Officer; Celtics President Rich Gotham and Co-Owners Steve Pagliuca and Wyc Grousbeck were on hand. A multi-year partnership between GE and the Celts has been formed. The Celtics uniform jerseys – both white (for home games) and green (away) – would sport an emblem on their left shoulder straps. As you may know, George has been diagnosed with throat cancer. He has completed his intensive chemotherapy and radiation treatments. And there were further complications. He had to have his tonsils removed, and since he is a diabetic, George has had a feeding tube inserted into his stomach to control his diet. But there’s always friendship. We mentioned that Friday, February 17, will be quite an evening with great entertainment. Both Dru Errico and cover band Thomas Park will be there along with countless others who want to give back to a true friend who has given us all the timeless gifts of laughter and friendship. The use of the GE logo on the Celtics uniform shoulder strap is a revenue generator, of course. But GE brings a lot more than that to this partnership. It’s called “data and analytics”, a phrase that covers detailed, highly accurate numerical measurement and assessment of Celtics conditioning, including the machines they use and the exercises they do. Boff made reference to the existing involvement that GE has with the quadrennial Olympic Games, and she repeated GE’s aim to become an integral part of the City of Boston. There is some corporate precedent in Boston for this type of partnership. Certainly, P&G/

Gillette is well known for its athletic involvement, going all the way back its boxing bout sponsorship in the 40s and 50s. And key local sports facilities are named for corporations, including the TD (Bank) Garden and of course, Foxboro’s Gillette Stadium. Suffice to say that what the Celts’ wear won’t resemble racetrack uniforms, which look like the wearer fell into a labeling machine. There are at least a couple of coincidences worth mentioning here. GE not only joins Gillette as a key sponsor of Boston’s dynamic sports scene, it also will be constructing its new headquarters building on what was originally Gillette property along NECCo Street and Way. How’s that for continuing a corporate tradition in Fort Point? And the number 17 you see on the Celtics jerseys pictured above is also the number (long since retired to the Garden rafters) of John Havlicek, the Celtics’

all-time scoring leader. He scored 26,395 points during his career with the Celts, all in games played before the threepoint field goal was permit-

Chinese New Year Starts in Andrew Square are symbolized by dragon figures everywhere, including Boston’s own Chinatown. Andrew Square is just a couple of miles from Chinatown, so it’s reasonable to expect one or two dragons to drop from the clouds and land there as well. The Chinese zodiac has a twelveyear cycle, each part of which is represented by a different animal. As of January 27-28, we have now entered the Year of the Rooster. People who were born in a Year of the Rooster (2017, 2005, 1993, 1981, 1969, 1957, 1945, 1933)

by Rick Winterson The Chinese New Year of the Rooster started in Andrew Square with a spectacular dragon sighting. The New Year is an annual Far Eastern celebration set by a Lunar Calendar. It began here in Boston on Friday, January 27-28, as dated by our own Gregorian Calendar. Late last Friday afternoon, Andrew Square’s Anna Travel (corner of Devine Way and

Dorchester Avenue) was visited by two huge dragons, an impeccably dressed Chinese gentleman (with fan), and a trio of drum-and-cymbal percussionists (with, well, drums and cymbals). Unlike the episodes in the dragon stories of the Western World (such as Smaug in Tolkien’s “The Hobbit”?), a dragon sighting brings good health and fortune to many Eastern nations. The Chinese Lunar New Year and its hopes

are punctual, observant, and hardworking. However, 2017 may not be a good year for its Roosters except where love is involved. – watch your money and your health, but go ahead and get married. On the global scene, the last Year of the Rooster was 2005 – a year of storms and increasing arms races. If our world leaders don’t get their acts together and soon, history will repeat itself, because the “aura” of each sign in the Chinese zodiac tends to return again every twelve years.

“What a Swell Party This Was … “ side of Andrew Square at 13 Boston Street, and it’s still a barbershop. The Vento family home in South Boston was located in the 800 block of East fifth. Tony’s father was an accomplished musician as well. He taught his sons saxophone and trumpet. It was music that brought Tony and Mildred together. Mildred (Dillan) delivered some music from her sister to Tony at the old Ken Jazz Club, and events proceeded from that meeting. They have been together for 64 years.

Tony Vento turned 90 on Wednesday, February 1 – a hale, hearty, and healthy 90 that allows him to work a regular schedule in his barber shop at 13 Boston Street, play in his local band, and fully enjoy his many friends and his large, lovely family, who extend out to the fourth generation from him and his wife Mildred. His 90th birthday was celebrated at Seapoint on Sunday afternoon, January 29. And it was a (very) swell party, indeed. It was a surprise party. The expressions on Tony’s and Mildred’s faces as they entered the Seapoint ballroom telegraphed how astonished they both were. The party had been arranged in secret by their son and four daughters. Both Tony and Mildred were told that Tony’s band had a gig at Seapoint – he’s a tenor sax man; Mildred does vocals – a truly talented couple. Over a hundred friends and relatives showed up. One center of attention was the birthday cake, which was decorated with Tony’s name and “90”; Mildred’s name was there as well. She’s an unbelievable 92. Tony and Mildred‘s son (also named Tony) provided the music. Their four daugh-

There wasn’t a dry eye when Mildred agreed to sing with the band. And toddler great-granddaughter Kensley was one of the guests of honor. During one of the party’s high points, District Two City Councilor Bill Linehan said about Tony, “I want to grow up just like him.” He then presented a Boston City Council resolution to Tony. This formal resolution recognized Tony’s long career and many services to South Boston. The Linehan family has always been, and still are, among Tony’s most

loyal customers. Tony then spoke, expressing his profound gratitude to the guests at his party. Mildred spoke emotionally about how much South Boston meant to her. Their daughter Milly read an original tribute to them from the whole Vento family and all their friends. And then the buffet Italian dinner was served Tony’s father, Nicolo “Charlie” Vento, came to the U.S. in 1919. He founded the barbershop in 1928, 88 years ago. Hours back then were 8 to 6 weekdays, 8 to 10 (p.m.) on Saturdays. It’s still there, just out-

Tony’s musical career has been quite successful. He played at Wonderland for several years, and at the Hi-Hat on Columbus and Mass Avenues. Do you remember that place, near where Wally’s is now? As a USO musician, he entertained the troops in Korea, in Europe, and on many of the Pacific Islands – Guam, Midway, and Iwo Jima. He traveled with Bob Hope’s troupe. This interview with Tony ended with some wonderful joint reminiscences about past musicians in the Big Bands, Zoot Sims, Earl Bostic, and Stan Getz – a genius according to Tony. And Tony still plays regular dance gigs and classical get-togethers at Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy.

Here’s to another 90, Tony.

By Rick Winterson “Terrific” is a simple, a frequently overused, and almost a kind of slang word, but South Boston Online can’t think of a better term for the recent production of the musical “Annie” at the Boys & Girls Club. The young people – all Clubhouse members – had worked extremely hard to perfect their performances. Special credit is also due to the many, many Directors, Creative Team Members, and all of those behind the scenes. The Club’s presentation of “Annie” was actually a Review (“Revue”?), meaning that the production featured the most dramatic and wellknown excerpts from the original, full-length musical “Annie” – e.g.,

“Annie” Is Terrific

“Maybe” and “Tomorrow”. The Clubhouse production, consisting of 12 total numbers, was approximately an hour long (it flew by!). The performance area in the Clubhouse is called the “Brian Rafanelli Stage in the Lovett-Woodson Performing Arts Center”. It’s a very effec-

tive stage; the working set design was both versatile and eye-catching. A word about musicals: “Musical Comedies” such as “Annie” are an American art form, descended from the operettas that were so popular in Europe and the early United States.

Think of modern musical comedies as lighter versions – with dance sequences, of course - of works by Victor Herbert and Rudolph Friml in the late 1800s. Many of the most successful 20th Century musical comedies are set in mythical locales and/or contain a certain amount of farce. What could be better for these purposes than creating a musical from a popular comic strip? “Little Orphan Annie” was the most widely read comic strip in America for many years (yes, more popular than “Superman”) and featured some mythical/farcical characters like Oliver (Daddy) Warbucks. Isn’t “Warbucks” a memorable name for a comic strip character? Arf!

How is Massport working to address South Boston transportation needs?

The once abundant surface parking lots in the South Boston Waterfront are rapidly disappearing. The last thing South Boston residents need is more cars circling through the neighborhood in search of parking. Massport is building the multi-modal South Boston Waterfront Transportation Center (SBWTC) to help to address the parking shortage in the district. Slated to be completed in 2018, the $85 million SBWTC will include: • Direct access to/from highways for people who work in the South Boston Waterfront or visit – reducing the traffic impact on local streets; • 1,550 shared public parking spaces for area employees, restaurant and retail customers, and visitors. Massport intends to make parking spaces available to South Boston residents during snow emergencies; • Real-time transportation schedule and information center, ride sharing hub, Zip cars, electric vehicle charging stations, a Hubway bike station, and a weather-protected access to the WTC Silver Line Station; • Sustainable design including roof top solar panels, LED lighting, and climate change resilient design features.

He’s quiet. He’s polite. He keeps busy playing basketball in school and at the Walsh Center gymnasium. He helps out at the Walsh gym with the timeclock and scorebook during hoop games. He works part time at the Joseph M. Tierney Learning Center as a junior staff person and enjoys supervising the youngsters under his tutelage. His name is Danny O’Neill. Danny, 16, lives with his two brothers, Shawn, who is his guardian, and his younger brother, Devin. When he was a youngster, Danny attended the Michael J. Perkins Elementary School and Up Academy. Both schools are located in South Boston. He’s currently a sophomore at Charlestown High School.

School is averaging about 12 points per game. He enjoys the team camaraderie and the experience. He feels like he’s getting better which each game and practice and understands he needs to work hard at all times to achieve his goal of becoming an overall better player. “It’s a learning process for me,” he said. “I’m putting in a lot of hard work every day. I go to school early each morning before classes. I shoot around and lift weights. I also go to the Condon School once a week and we go through basketball drills and exercises with Coach Billy Allen. Danny started playing basketball two years ago. For a teenager who only has two years under his belt on the court, he’s quite the player. He knows the game. He’s quick. He’s smart. He’s got a good handle. He plays good defense. He unselfish and knows when to pass. He’s a tremendous shooter. He mixes his game up to keep his foes on their toes. He can penetrate and score. Or he can knock down the three-pointer from downtown.

Without doubt, the kid’s a scorer. Without doubt he’s a good kid. And we wish him the best as he continues to razzle and dazzle his opponents on the court.

Parade Update by Rick Winterson The South Boston Allied War Veterans Council (the SBAWVC) is diligently preparing for the St. Patrick’s Day/Evacuation Day Parade. The following was phoned in to us by Bill Desmond, who heads up the SBAWVC. Bill states, “We now have confirmed that the Shannon Rovers, the world-famous Irish pipes and drums band, will be joining us for the upcoming Parade.” Check out their website. South Boston Online will keep you posted. We plan to report on the Parade each week, as it develops under the loving care of the SBAWVC. Just to remind you, the Parade this year will take place (perhaps somewhat unusually) on March 19, the Sunday after St. Patrick’s Day. It will step off promptly at 1.00 p.m. from the Lower West Broadway staging area, as always, and will follow the regular route around South Boston to Andrew Square. The Parade Chief Marshal’s Banquet is scheduled for mid-day at the Lithuanian Club on Sunday, March 5 – two weeks before the Parade. We understand that the South Boston Citizens’ Association (the SBCA) has scheduled their banquet for Friday evening, March 17, in the Convention Center – a fitting way to open the Parade weekend. They’ll also hold the Jimmy Flaherty Kickoff Breakfast in Seapoint’s upper floor at 10:00 Saturday morning on February 25. This year, the South Boston “Season” will extend over three full weeks, filled with all kinds of varied activities, and culminating with the Parade. Stay tuned!

LI, and not surprisingly, they unanimously declared that our beloved New England Patriots would win yet another NFL Super Bowl Championship. Here are their predictions: “It’s going to be a very close game. Both quarterbacks are going to shine and it’s going to go right down to the wire. Pats win 34-28.” (Kathy Davis) “James Develin will score a touchdown. Chris Hogan will have a good game and Brady will be the game’s MVP. Pats win 34-20.” (Greg Lally) “Chris Hogan and the defense are going to have amazing games. Brady won’t throw any picks and LeGarrette Blount will rush for a touchdown. The building will also include a three-level, underground garage containing up to 179 parking spaces to serve both the residents and retail/restaurant uses. Gatey Girls on Top Impressive 7-0 record for local squad

They love playing with each other and I love coaching them. These kids love the game so much they talk about our Gatey team all year round. They always tell me that this is the year a banner will hang (in the Walsh gym) with their names on it.

By Kevin Devlin The Gate of Heaven CYO girls’ high school travel basketball team is currently on top of the CYO hoop world with their 7-0 record. Without doubt, the team is playing solid basketball on both ends of the court and is enjoying this season. Heading into mid-January, the team was on a roll with an eye-widening 5-0 record. On Saturday, January 21, at the Walsh Center gym, the Gate of Heaven CYO high school girls’ hoop team defeated Saint Leonard’s, 40-16, to improve their record to 6-0. Jacqueline Czar and Allison McGough netted 12 and 10 points respectively. Then, on Saturday, January 28, again at the Walsh Center gym, the team defeated Saint Ann’s of Dorchester, 41-36, upping their record to 7-0. Beggan,

“What I love about this team is that they are very vocal,” she added. “They love to cheer on their teammates and are always encouraging one another and talking to each other on the court. In the past, our team has always dreamt of winning the state tournament. They are a really great team and I hope this is the year they receive that banner because they deserve it.

terback (Braden Buckley also played in the pocket) but the final nod went to Aiden Colton.” “There was a lot of great talent on display this year,” he added. “The games were competitive and the kids showed good sportsmanship. We saw a great deal of improvement by all of the players as the season progressed. We hope all the kids had fun. And we hope to see everyone back again next season for another great year.”

2017 March 17th Boxing Show Tryouts Yes its back, Tommy McGrath, President of the South Boston Citizens Association along with Peter Welch, owner of Peter Welch’s Gym at 371 Dorchester Ave. South Boston, will again be sponsoring this year’s March 17 th Boxing Show. After a one year absence this year’s show will take place on Saturday Night, March 11 th at the Peter Welch’s Gym, in South Boston. Admission is free of charge to all. The South Boston Citizens’ Association March 17 th Boxing Show has been part of the events put together by the Citizens’ Association for over 75 years, and at the request of many past and present South Boston residents, it was clear the Boxing Show has been missed, and needed to be returned. This year’s Boxing Show Chairman, Newly Elected Suffolk Register of Deeds, Stephen Murphy, along with Peter Welch, Owner of Welch’s Gym will be looking for young boxers of all ages to participate in this year’s show. Every young man or lady who participates in this year’s show will be awarded a trophy.
