Reminder: Polar Plunge, Scleroderma Fundraiser

by Rick Winterson A New Year’s thought for those of you who have moved to South Boston recently: Please consider either taking part in (or at least stopping by to watch) South Boston’s Annual Polar Plunge. It is perhaps South Boston’s oldest tradition, which is saying a lot in a neighborhood that honors its traditions as faithfully as Southie does. The Plunge takes place for (at least) the 116th time in the Curley Community Center/L Street Bathhouse on the K Street Beach side, at 10:30 a.m. on New Year’s Day – Sunday, January 1, 2017.

Both Plungers and spectators are welcome. Plan to come in a costume of your own design.

And beforehand, why not stop in at L Street Tavern – intersection of L and Eighth – to join the Plungers who are attending the Scleroderma Fundraiser?

After appropriate libations, a

march led by Kevin Conroy’s bagpipe band will step off from the Tavern at 9:30, and proceed down L Street to the Curley Center and the Beach on the K Street side. You are welcome to march, whether you are a Plunger or a spectator. Scleroderma is a dread, incurable disease that uses your contributions to continue its research into treatment and perhaps eventually, a cure.

As for the Polar Plunge itself, this South Boston tradition might go all the way back to veterans returning from the Civil War. It was first reported in Boston newspapers in 1901 – the same year the Heights monument was dedicated and the St. Patrick’s/Evacuation Day Parade first began. It is the oldest known such Plunge in the U.S. And if nothing else, South Boston’s Polar Plunge will clear your mind of all those cobwebs from New Year’s Eve. See you there? Why not?!?

The Fort Point Holiday Stroll Featured the “Poinsettias”

Friday, December 16, was the date of South Boston’s 2016 Umpteenth Annual Fort Point Stroll. Some twenty-plus studios and businesses were open for artistic shopping; the Stroll included a raffle, Holiday treats, and an outdoor Tea Party.

The weather, always changeable in mid-December, did not cooperate. It wasn’t that cold, but the on-again, off-again rain begged for mostly indoor exposure, so this writer and friend spent most of their time in the gallery space at the 249 A Street Artists’ Cooperative. From early on till 7:30, “The Fort Point Poinsettias” serenaded the passersby with celebratory Christmas songs in the 249 A gallery space, which was notably warm and dry.

Condon Christmas Joy from Staples Staples Corporation really stepped up in South Boston last Thursday afternoon, when they threw a gala Christmas Party for more than 100 young folks at the Condon Community Center.

Each of the kids had submitted a “Wish List”. From those lists, Staples went right to work and assembled sacks (yes, sacks!) of toys that matched those Wish Lists. It was a celebratory event, filled with laughter and excited cried of joy. The Staples Christmas Party ended quite appropriately with

pizza and a large Christmas cake.

The event was hosted by the Condon Center’s Youth & Families organization in the Condon Community Center.

Barbara Kelly, who oversees that Center’s community work, said, “Staples Corporation provided over 100 kids with their Christmas “Wish Lists” to make this Holiday a very special one. From age 1 to age 18, scores of kids ripped open bags of presents, while enjoying dinner and singing carols around the tree.

Christmas Eve Vigil at the Fourth

The Fourth Presbyterian Church, located at Dorchester Street and Vinton, always holds a special service on Christmas Eve – a Vigil and reenactment of the manger in Bethlehem, when the Christ Child is born on Christmas Morn. Last Saturday, December 24, was no exception to this joyful custom.

The Fourth’s celebration of the Christmas Eve Vigil began at 7 p.m.

Preliminary Gospel readings about the Nativity preceded the Welcome, which was delivered by Fourth Presbyterian Pastor Burns Stanfield. All four of the peripheral candles were lit on large Advent Wreath. The large candle in the center, symbolizing the coming “Light of the World” – the Christ Child – was lit last, for the first time, as Advent was ending. The gathered congregation sang the hymn “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen”.

The story of Christ’s Birth was narrated with Scripture readings

and celebrated in song. The readings came from Chapters 1, 2 of the Gospel of Luke, the most detailed of the Nativity narratives. The songs included “Singing Glory” by Rawn Harbor, and “No Room”, a bluesbased composition by the Rev. Burns Stanfield himself, about the Holy Family’s being forced to take shelter in the Bethlehem manger after they were told there was “No Room” at the local inn. A costumed pageant then proceeded along the Church aisle into the Sanctuary, where the participants recreated the manger scene while the congregation sang Christmas carols.

The Vigil observance closed with a candlelit procession around the Fourth Presbyterian Church’s inside perimeter, as “O, Holy Night” was sung. Each congregant carried a lit candle. After the procession was formed, they sang “Silent Night”, that most revered carol of all. Rev. Burns spoke a Blessing; the congregation sang “Joy to the World” in response, and the service ended.

Christmas Dinner for All, 2016

Thirty-three years ago, back in 1983, Msgr. Thomas McDonnell (“Father Tom”) began the custom of serving Holiday dinners to all who wanted one. This was in accordance with how Fr. Tom interpreted the Gospel of Luke, which he called “the Hospitality Gospel”. He enlisted the key assistance of Frank Kelley, not only a community-minded South Boston native and St. Augustine congregant but also an ex-Mess Sergeant. Well, Frank and Fr. Tom have passed and St. Augustine has been closed, but this joyous tradition continues Last Sunday was Christmas Day. The volunteers decorated Sts. Monica and Augustine Hall, publicized the 34th Christmas banquet, and worked for several days during Christmas Week preparing a major feast. From morning coffee and doughnuts to various pies for dessert, a combined ham and turkey banquet was assembled – with a lot of work and effort – and then served last Sunday.

More than 200 complete dinners were delivered to homes in festively decorated white bags, also by volunteers, who drove and dropped off for hours, overseen by the two Steve Greigs – Senior and Junior. It was a festive event, as usual. Tom Butler emceed the goings-on, Fr. Souza said the Blessing, John Healey sang “White Christmas”, and the many, many volunteers who served seemed to enjoy the occasion as much or more than anyone else. Laughter and bubbling conversation were everywhere to be heard. Ed Flynn, a volunteer with the Knights of Columbus (Pere Marquette Local 271) at the 2016 Christmas Dinner, commented afterward, “It is important that we remember the true meaning of Christmas … Thank you to all the volunteers, who made this a special day for hundreds of people throughout South Boston.” To which South Boston Online will only add, “Amen.”

Bcyf Tynan Happenings On December 22nd the Tynan council held its annual children’s Christmas party. The kids started out making their own personal ornaments to bring home to hang on the tree. Music and dancing along with refreshment were in order until Santa arrived. One by one over 50 kids sat with Santa and received a wrapped gift thanks to the tynan council and the donations make by our community especially the Dedham Savings bank. It was a busy week here as the staff and council were able to give out close to 100 presents to our kids here in the community.

The bcyf tynan and the Tierney Learning center afterschool programs held a holiday party together in the tynan cafeteria on December 16th. Allison Baker arrived from the Tierney with a van full of kids to enjoy the holidays with youth worker Katie O’Connell and many of her afterschool kids.

They participated in arts & crafts by making individual Christmas stocking full of holiday candies.

ies and had a wonderful time. We hope to have them back soon!

The final planning stages for our new Teen activities Room have taken place over the last couple of weeks. The Teen membership along with the Administrative Coordinator, John Lydon and BCYF “Out of School time” Manager, Joan Lanigan have come up with a fully equipped (i.e. flat screen tv, Furniture, play station 4,laptops, all in one printer/copier machine for home work, board games and much more.) Teen room for Our Community and Center that was very much in need of this space. This will provide our kids with a safe and healthy environment to learn, to spend time making friends and to stay off the streets! In the planning process for our new teen space many people stepped up for our children including our friend and neighbor Mayor ,Martin j. Walsh, The BCYF Leadership Team ,South Boston Community Development Foundation, Boston Police Athletic League and our Council here at the Tynan.

Drug Bust on Dot Ave.

vehicles massed at the intersection of Dorchester Avenbue and Fr. Songin Way, a block to the south of Andrew Square. Blue police vehicle lights were flashing as far

as the eye could see. The event, as (unofficially) stated at the scene: a massive drug enforcement action.

Several supposed offenders were quickly apprehended. Its work

over, the police cordon broke up and disappeared its respective ways both swiftly and efficiently. Good work on the part of Boston’s law enforcement officials and officers.

Baseball is his Game Youngster is a formidable pitcher with a bright future

Overall, his record in Little League is an astounding 17-0 during that three-year period.

For the last seasons he has pitched in the South Boston Babe Ruth and has been managed by the indefatigable Emo Barron. Chris has also been active on his school team. He pitched on the seventh, eight, and freshman teams at Catholic Memorial. His overall record is 5-1. As a freshman, he defeated powerhouse Xaverian and had eleven strikeouts against Saint John’s Preparatory School.

By Kevin Devlin He’s a polite, reserved youngster who loves the game of baseball. His name is Christian “Chin” Mazzeo. Chris, 15, is the son of Ralph Mazzeo and Tracey Falcone. He has four older sisters, Rachel, Priscilla, Lauren, and Jennifer.

He also loves his family English bulldog named Mazie.

Chris is in the tenth grade and attends Catholic Memorial High School in West Roxbury. The school’s mission is the “educate students as individuals, intellectually and spiritually…guide students to work to their God-given potential… prepare them for postsecondary education and to become leaders who serve the Church and

the world.” He’s doing well in the classroom, his favorite subject is chemistry, and someday plans on being a professional baseball player or enter the law enforcement profession.

the Gate of Heaven CYO basketball program. This year he’s on the Boston Home Inspector’s Club in the cadet house league coached by his dad. Chris is proud that he captured the Evacuation Day free throw event at the Tynan School Community Center gym for three consecutive years beginning in 2102.

He enjoys the sport during the winter to keep him busy and in shape for the baseball.

“Playing gets you in shape,” he said, with a smile. “It’s fun to play with my friends and is helpful in preparing me for baseball season.”

Without doubt, baseball is his game. He dreams about the game whether he’s wide awake or sleeping. Chris started playing in the Southie t-ball league.

He spent three years in Little League and had a ton of fun.

His squad, Metro Energy, managed by Bobby McGarrell, and coached by John Goodine, Wynn Matthews, and his dad, captured the Little League title in 2012 and 2013. Chris was the Little League MVP in 2013 and won the batting title with a .734 batting average. He has thrown four no-hitters in Little League and one in the Whitman Tournament in 2013. He had thirteen strikeouts in that tournament. He tallied fifteen strikeouts in one Little League tilt. He’s accurate and never hits or walks opposing players. His best pitch is his fastball and he’s been clocked at seventy-five miles in hour.

“I enjoy pitching,” Chris said.

“It seems to come natural to me.

I love competing in the school league. It’s a great conference. I get to meet new kids from other parts of the area. It’s cool because I’m the only kid from Southie.”

During the off-season when he’s away from the mound and the Walsh Center gym, Chris is busy honing his baseball skills at the Braintree School of Baseball. Once a week on the weekends, he does the “long toss” to increase his velocity. The instructors stress the mechanics of pitching and help him make adjustments by tweaking his mechanics during the long toss drill. Chris also has a miniworkout area in his basement where he lifts weights, hits the punching bag, and stretches.

His parents, Ralph and Tracey, are proud of their son’s commitment to this sport.

“Chris has a natural baseball skill,” said his dad. “He has a strong arm…accurate. During a long toss drill he threw the ball eighty-five yards. That’s pretty good. The main thing is he’s having fun doing it. Maybe someday he’ll get a scholarship out of it, but you still always need a back-up plan.

“He’s an honest…good boy,” his dad added. “He helps around the house, does the chores, and takes the dog out for walks.

He works hard at school every day and doesn’t fool around.”

Sean swam for the Colonel Dan Marr Boys and Girls Club in Dorchester for two years before he joined the Southie team; and he’s never looked back. His favorite race is the 50-yard freestyle event. He’s been to the National Championships three times and enjoyed it immensely.

By Kevin Devlin They’re both seniors and attend Boston Latin Academy. They are Honor Roll students at this coveted exam school and will be attending college next fall. They are also longtime members of the South Boston Boys and Girls Club swim team and love every minute practicing and participating in swim meets. They are two of the Club’s best swimmers, Brogan McGonagle and Sean Coyne.

Brogan McGonagle, 17, is the daughter of Susan Pelham and Michael McGonagle. Her sister is Shannon McGonagle. During her junior year at BLA Brogan took an AP class in European history. This year, she is taking AP classes in literature and comparative government.

She is in the school’s mentoring club and enjoys helping eight-graders with their schoolwork. She plans on pursuing a career in nursing.

As a youngster on the playing fields in Southie, Brogan has kept herself busy throughout the years. She was a cheerleader in the South Boston Pop Warner League for six seasons.

She played in the South Boston Youth Soccer League (SBYSL) since she was knee high to a grasshopper; running around Moakley Park for more than seven years. She played in the South Boston Girls Softball League (SBGSL) for four years and in the South Boston Youth Lacrosse League (SBYLL) for seven seasons.

“I liked all these sports,” she said.

“I liked kicking the ball in soccer but thought I had more control of the situation when I was playing lacrosse and using a stick. I enjoyed softball and was a good hitter and pitcher. It was fun to be on these teams, tightknit teams and to play and spend time with friends.”

Brogan is, and always has been, completely focused on swimming and loves it. She’s been swimming for the Club since she was six.

Her favorite event is the 100-yard backstroke and she’ll never forget the time she saw her name up on the Club’s record board. She was the Club’s MVP in 2011.On the Club circuit she has countless rib-

bons and trophies. She’s been to the Boys and Girls Club National Swimming Championships four times. These meets are held in April in Saint Petersburg, Florida.

“Last year in Florida was great,” she said. “I did my best times in three of my events, the 200 IM, the 100-yard freestyle, and the 100-yard back. I took ten seconds off my 200 IM. I was shocked…and when I finished I was exhausted, excited and happy.

“The whole experience being on Team New England was cool” she added. “They’d call out your name and times would be posted on the big board. It was fun going to Florida representing New England and meeting other swimmers from New England and from other parts of the country.”

Brogan appreciates the fact that Coach Mary Wilson, and her sister Shannon, work them hard at practices so they’ll be ready for the meets. Coach Wilson has nothing but high praise for Brogan.

“Overall, Brogan has grown into a leader on the team,” said Wilson. “She is always willing to give a helping hand. She inspires the younger girls on the team to be their best, to try their hardest all the time. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for her!”

Sean Coyne, 18, is the son of Peter Coyne and Lori LaCourt. He has a twin sister named Annie. As a junior at BLA, he was in an AP Latin class, and this year is in AP calculus and chemistry classes. And, he’s the secretary of the National Honor Society. Sean hasn’t missed a

day of school at BLA for the past six years and is proud of it. He should be because that is truly an impressive record, an unheard of accomplishment. He plans to pursue a career in pharmaceutical studies.

In the field of sports, Sean played in the Gate of Heaven CYO basketball program for six years. He also played in the SBYSL for five seasons.

“I liked playing basketball and soccer,” he said. “I enjoyed the exercise, all the running, and being

Shannon McGonagle, the assistant swim coach at the Club, feels fortunate to have such a talented swimmer on the team.

“Sean has been a fantastic help in the pool area and with the swim team,” said McGonagle. “Along with being one of our best swimmers, he leads the younger team members and encourages them to work hard and reach their full potential.”

This was the question asked of the K2 - 6 grade students at South Boston Catholic Academy by Sister Lisa Valentini recently. Sister Lisa, a Missionary Sister of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, came to South Boston Catholic Academy to share her story of working in mission dioceses throughout the world. Sister Lisa represents the Pontifical Mission Societies of

the United States which seeks to fulfill the mission of the Church by spreading the Gospel, especially to children. Here in the Archdiocese of Boston, this work is done through the Missionary Childhood Association, children helping children.

Sister Lisa uses her gift of storytelling and playing guitar to ask students nationwide to sacrifice something small so that children with less, may live a more just life by receiving food, shelter, clothing and an education.

Sister Lisa’s eye-opening presentation, including photos of the aftermath of the most recent earthquake in Haiti, tugged on the heartstrings

of many students and teachers alike.

South Boston Catholic Academy has begun a school wide collection for MCA and asks for your prayers for Sister Lisa and all children families receiving care through the work of the Pontifical Mission Societies and we hope and pray that 2017 will be a better and wonderful year for all children and their families.
