The Red Kettles are a vital source of funding for Salvation Army programming and services for hundreds of thousands of children, families and seniors across Massachusetts each year. This includes meals, toys and other holiday support for those in need, along with funding for food pantries, soup kitchens, social services, and education programs. The Salvation Army has set a statewide Red Kettle campaign goal of $3.5 million this year. The Red Kettle campaign ends on Christmas Eve.

Forry, Collins Applaud MBTA Investments in Service $280 Million for New Cars Fits With Lawmakers’ Aggressive Transportation Agenda Recently, State Senator Linda Dorcena Forry and State Representative Nick Collins lauded the MBTA’s decision to invest additional money into a complete overhaul of Red Line trains. Previously under contract to replace only a portion of the aging train cars, the MBTA Fiscal Management and Control Board voted unanimously to instead replace the entire fleet, and add up to an additional 30 cars, bringing the total from 220 to 252 cars.

“The investment in new Red Line trains will significantly improve efficiency and reliability for all commuters, in particular my neighbors in Dorchester, South Boston and Mattapan,” said Senator Linda Dorcena Forry. “I commend the MBTA for taking steps to modernize the system and improve the service for riders.” The Red Line is the system’s busiest branch, carrying up to 22 percent of the total riders and servicing Cambridge,

Downtown, South Boston, Dorchester, Quincy, and Braintree. The new cars are expected to cost an additional $280 million, but reduce the cost by up to $310,000 per car. In addition, the new fleet is expected to reduce time between trains from five minutes, to three minutes, increasing efficiency, reliability, and service for riders, some of the main goals of the lawmakers’ transportation agenda.

“This is an important step forward for the system, and one that will greatly enhance the quality of life for commuters in South Boston and Dorchester” said Representative Collins.

“I applaud the MBTA’s decision to make such an important investment to bring in new riders and to provide the best possible service to all its customers. The Red Line is a key transit corridor that keeps our city and our region thriving, and this sort of investment will ensure that it will be a reliable connection for residents, businesses, and commuters for years to come.” The cars are expected to be in use by 2023.

Mini-Crime Wave Hits South Boston 5.- Call 9-1-1 at once, if you see any suspicious characters in your neighborhood. Don’t wait – CALL!

CONTENT: “Take me; I’m yours. And Merry Christmas!”

That could be a Season’s Greeting right now in South Boston. You see, Boston’s Police at District 6 have alerted South Boston Online to a rapidly increasing number of package thefts since Thanksgiving – one or two thefts from front doors, steps, and porches are being reported every day. The stolen items are packages delivered by various delivery services, which are left outside in front by their drivers during daytime hours – highly visible from the street and to people walking by. We understand that many sneak-thieves actually follow delivery trucks from drop-off to drop-off, and then move in immediately to grab the packages.

Here are some tips to help you avoid being ripped off:

1.-Have your packages sent to the shipping companies, so you can pick them up yourself in person. Both FedEx and UPS have Customer Service facilities (with parking) here in South Boston.

2.-Make arrangements to have someone at home when your package is expected, or have your package delivered to a neighbor at home. Or to your place of work, if the boss agrees.

3.-Have your packages delivered with “Signature Required”; leave a note for the delivery driver NOT to leave your packages outside in a visible spot.

4.- Install an inexpensive surveillance camera over your front door.

Post a notice about the camera where everyone passing by can see it.

Not only is theft, especially at Christmas, a real tragedy, it is also difficult to deal with. When a package is stolen before you receive it (even if it has been dropped off outside your door), the sender of the package – not you - has to put in the claim. That can take weeks of paperwork, waiting, and checking, before you, or those who sent the package, get reimbursed.

As a special treat for the Sunday tour (December 4), the Fitzgerald Post VFW # 561 opened its doors to the Sunday House Tours. Gripping military murals by Norm Crump, accompanied by local artists Deb Putnam and Dan McCole, along

with festive Christmas decorations, made it an excellent and unusual stop on Sunday’s House Tours.

And of course, the Christmas Shoppe at Laboure was open to all. What a great place to get those unusual decorations that can’t be found elsewhere.

The Annual Tree-Lighting in Perkins Square also took place on Sunday, the 4th. John Allison from the Mayor’s office arranged a really festive event that featured pony rides, balloon sculptures, “Simon Says”,

and lots of hot chocolate for the kids. The Magic Trolley pulled up promptly at 1 p.m., with the singing elves on board. Mayor Marty Walsh introduced Santa Claus and Mrs. Santa, who then gathered around Collin Tarbox (“Santa’s little helper”) to welcome him. Thank you, John.

The week progressed with a festive Christmas Party for seniors at the Condon Community Center, thrown by Barbara Kelly and Joe Curran. Peter Golemme played for his regular carol singing at Marian

Manor on Saturday afternoon, which was followed by a Christmas Party on the Heights at the Allison’s home.

And we don’t want to forget that Sunday, December 11, was the first evening of Hanukkah, which commemorates the Jews relighting their lanterns in the Temple at Jerusalem for eight days, even though they had only a day’s worth of illuminating oil. Hanukkah celebrations closed out the weekend.

Writing Letters to Santa

Lauretta Brennan, the Joseph M. Tierney Center’s membership coordinator and Milly Pena, the site coordinator, wrote the following letter about their Santa Letter Writing Event, which was held at the Center on Wednesday evening, December 7. Here is the letter verbatim: “Hello, our names are Lauretta and Milly and we work at the Tierney Learning Center. The Tierney is a true community center situated right in the heart of the Old Colony Housing Development. Milly and I have families which extend beyond our apartment walls. Our extended families have become the people of the Tierney Learning Center as well as the South Boston Community. We work with the rest of

This past Wednesday, we had a Santa Letter Writing Event where about 130 families came together to write letters to Santa Claus. During that time, Santa made an appearance with his adorable elf. At the Letter Writing Event, some of our little people asked for My Little Pony, while others asked for Pokémon cards and arts & crafts sets. Most of our older children asked for gift cards.

We want to take this opportunity to spread Holiday Cheer and to thank the generous donors

Lauretta and Milly also emailed me three short letters written by youngsters who attended this event to be airmailed to Santa’s cozy workshop located up at the North Pole. We thought you might enjoy reading them. One boy wrote, “Dear Santa. All I want for xmas is some candy canes and maybe drawing stuff and stickers.

I might be eleven bit I love to draw and who hates stickers? I also want pens but that’s it. Merry Christmas.” Another boy wrote, “hoho hoho. I want cars with metal that can open the doors. With Love.

Merry Christmas ho ho.” And one, young girl thankfully wrote.

“Thank you for giving us all this opportunity to makeing christmastime happen. Somthing about me is that I have a hardworking mom. Also I have 7 siblings in all.

Most of them are boys. I thank you so much. A very happy girl.”

The fourth graders prepared for and led the monthly South Boston Catholic Academy school Mass on Thursday, December 8th. It was the feast day of the Immaculate Conception, a celebration of Mary the Mother of Jesus and her being born without original sin. The students focused on the day’s message that just as God had a plan for Mary, He has a plan for all His children The South Boston Catholic Academy Community celebrated St. Nicholas Day on December 6th by participating in a week-long Misfit Sock Drive that ended on December 9th. The students donated all the socks they collected from families and friends to the St. Francis House in Boston for their Misfit Sock Drive. Thank you to all who donated socks for this special drive.

Embracing Forty-Five Years at the Club

“It’s fun…great to see how members have turned out,” she said.

“The positive things we tried to instill in them paid off. They loved the Club and view it as a second home, a home away from home.”

She’s worked at the South Boston Boys and Girls Club for the past forty-five years.She’s the art director and has enjoyed her long journey there throughout the decades but still doesn’t know when she’ll read the last page and finish the book.

Her name, well-known by countless South Bostonians, is Anne Gordon.

Anne grew up in Milton and currently lives in Canton. She attended Milton Public Schools and graduated from the Mass College of Art in 1974 with a degree in art education. She subsequently earned a Master’s Degree in Creative Art in Education in 1995 from Leslie College in Cambridge.

When she was eighteen years old and an art student at the Mass College of Art, the Club’s art director, Toni Acker, asked her if she wanted a part-time job.

Anne admittedly didn’t even know such entities existed but accepted the position and never left.

Anne quickly embraced the atmosphere of the Club, the connectiveness of the staff and their purpose for being.

“From the beginning I ennjoyed teaching art at the Club,” she said.

“I try to teach the kids how to use art in a creative way to improve their lives on a daily basis. I like it

more than I would have if I worked in a school system because I got to know the students and the families for a longer period of time at the Club. I also liked the cameraderie of the staff and the awesome Southie spirit that was so evident.”

As far as Anne is concerned, working at the Club is more than just a job. She found her niche working with the kids as well as befriending many staffers, parents, and others who collaborated on Club matters.

“There have been so many good people I’ve met throughout the years,” she said, “I wish I kept a journal.So many funny and interesting people. So many memories. So many great families, the Dearden’s, the Murphy’s, the McGuire’s, the O’Connor’s,

the Cunningham’s, the Rooney brothers, so many tremendous people I can’t mention them all.

“It’s funny. Now I see former Club members coming in with their children,” she added. “Some of these former members weren’t the best behaved at the time but are now careful to tell their children they better behave. That’s a good feeling to see that and just means we must have done a good job, made a positive impression on those former members who are now parents themselves.”

Anne understands the importance of the Club’s mission to serve the kids of South Boston, that it’s been more than just another place for them to go to after school and during the sum-

“I stay connected on the internet,” she said. “Keeping in touch with Club alumni is great. They’re spread out all of the place, all over the country, but now I can see how they’re doing any time I want.”

Being in charge of daily operations at the Club, Tim Bothwell appreciates such a dedicated staff member.

“For the past 45 years Anne has been a staple at the South Boston Club and the community,” he said, “Her commitment to our members, staff, and families is unprecendented. The members look to Anne as a fair and honest person, and the staff look to her for guidance and leadership. Throughout her career, Anne has dedicated herself to the families we serve and left them with lifelong memories; along with positive and kind-hearted mentorship. It is an honor to work with her everyday.”

Pattie McCormick, who is the Club’s Associate Director of Development, also understands Anne’s value to the Club family.

“In her 45 years working with the children at the South Boston Boys and Girls Club, ANNE has never lost her enthusiasm and passion,” she stated. “It’s contagious and the staff people who have worked under Anne’s tutelage have become some of the most caring and committed youth workers. We are extremely fortunate that the young teenage art student from Milton found her way to South Boston many years ago. Thank you Anne!!!”

Anne is still undecided about when she’ll close the book on this part of her life and put it on the shelf.

“I don’t have any plans at the moment to retire,” she said. “When a new kid arrives in the program I can’t see myself leaving, leaving the Club or the kids that I love.”

By Kevin Devlin On a monthly basis, the South Boston Neighborhood House, aka the Ollie, recognizes a youngster by announcing their “Student Spotlight” winner. These young members are recognized for their good behavior, for being kind, caring and considerate, as well as being a super kid overall. The student spotlight winner for the month of November is Aunnie Ochieng.

Aunnie, 13, is the daughter of Selesa Obudho. She has two brothers named Wence Otieno and Nickolas Asante. Aunnie attended the Tynan Elementary School and is now in the sev-

Aunnie is an Honor Roll student, her favorite subject is math, and someday she hopes on becoming a singer or a veterinarian. Her favorite color is blue. Her favorite food is French fries from Alfredo’s on Dorchester Street. Her favorite TV shows are on the Disney Channel. They are “Backstage” and “Bunk’d.” And her favorite entertainers are Pentatonix, an American a cappella group from Arlington, Texas, consisting of five vocalists.

In the field of sports, Aunnie plays lacrosse in the metro league on a Dorchester squad.

“I like lacrosse,” she said.

“I learn new things about the sport during the practices. I play in the fall and in the spring. It’s really good exercise and a lot of fun.”

At the Ollie, Aunnie has been involved with the cooking club, the dance club, and a host of other activities.

She likes to be busy and participate as much as possible.

“I like helping out the director (Kristen DeVoy),” she said. “And I like helping out Katie (Dwyer) and Danielle

(Chapin). It is fun and I get to do a lot of stuff like shopping for presents for Christmas and going ice skating. I like being involved in activities.

Katie Dwyer, the STEM and Girl’s Group Director has a special place in her heart for this young girl “I have a special connection with Aunnie,” she stated.

“She was one of the first girls I mentored and we are very close. She’s sort of more like a friend because she’s so mature and helpful. She helps the staff doing various things and is always helping other kids…and we appreciate that.”

In her leisure time, Aunnie enjoys cheerleading for the girls’ and boys’ school hoop teams nicknamed “The Lions.” Otherwise she’s busy doing school work, watching or going to the movies with her brothers, or reading. She’s currently reading “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog

For four years now, the good, kind-hearted bakers of South Boston have submitted their gingerbread creations to a Christmas contest at the Branch Library, which is sponsored by the South Boston Arts Association (the SBAA). The idea is to celebrate the Christmas Season, of course, but it’s also to collect toys for the “Toys for Tots” program. Not only were the gingerbread entries wonderful to look at, but also the many, many toys collected will benefit countless young people, who would otherwise go without gifts at this, the most giving time of year.

Last Monday evening, eight gingerbread houses were entered into the contest. The best business entry (with a Grinch atop) was awarded to Dedham Savings.

The multi-turreted castle by Leslie Sachs and her boyfriend, the ornate chalet by Madeleine Bonnanzio, and the black-and-white cottage by Nancy Maggs took the first, second, and third prizes, respectively. The Aranna brother and sister, Andrew and Olivia from the South Boston Catholic Academy, won the popular vote with their gingerbread train and track.

Thank you, South Boston bakers, for your cheerful efforts as well as to the SBAA for putting on this seasonal contest.

Copley Square Tree Lighting

Thousands of revelers gathered on Copley Plaza November 28 for the annual tree lighting celebration hosted by

Mayor Martin J. Walsh, the Boston Parks and Recreation Department, and The Friends of Copley Square. The free event featured appearances by Jenny Johnson, Santa Claus, and Rudolph along with musical performances by the Boston Children’s Chorus, vocalist Marchelle JacquesYarde of the Boston Parks and Recreation Department, the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, and Berklee College of Music student Mahamma Germain of Hyde Park. In addition, the US Postal Service unveiled its new holiday stamps. Light refreshments were provided by New England Coffee, DAVIDsTEA, and HP Hood LLC. The Fairmont Copley Plaza hosted a family reception immediately following for all in attendance.
