World War I Association Chooses Edward Committee’s First Meeting Flynn for 2017 Chairman By Rick Winterson
S
outh Boston Citizens’ Association President Thomas E. McGrath has announced that Edward Flynn of the U.S. Navy (Retired) will serve as General Chairman of the Association’s 2017 Evacuation Day commemoration by the SBCA Executive Board. “The executive board and I look forward to working with Ed, to ensure once again the success of this unique community celebration, the commemoration of the British evacuation of Boston in 1776,” said McGrath. “Eddie is a lifelong resident and active member of the SBCA his entire adult life. His dedication to the South Boston Citizens’ Association and the neighborhood of South Boston will continue to make it a great place for
all who live here. We are honored to list him as a member, and even prouder to name him this year’s General Chairman.” Ed Flynn enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1987 and retired from military service in 2014. While in the U.S. Navy, Flynn served on active duty at Joint Task Force Guantanamo, with the Navy’s 5th Fleet in the Persian Gulf and on the Iraqi oil platforms, and served on a U.S. Department of Defense task force in Washington, D.C., helping coordinate transportation services for the 2005 presidential inaugural. Flynn served as public affairs coordinator at the U.S. Naval War College and completed training in homeland secuContinued on Page10

TO THE EDITOR; I thought the page one story on Mayor Marty Walsh’s State of the City was great. I always thought that the historic Faneuil Hall was a grand hall for the annual State of the City Address but the selection of another historic building, Symphony Hall might even be an even venue for this annual speech. I liked the way that South Boston Online talked of how great the ceremony was and talking in detail about the show put on inside that historic site for the invited guests of the evening. I truly believe Boston has been a very lucky city to have had such great mayors with vision during my lifetime. Mayor Walsh is the latest mayor who is in charge of carrying our city to further great heights as a city for all. South Boston Online like myself likes the goals that Walsh sees ahead in the immediate further. His priority appears to be public education where he is hoping to get all four year olds into the public school system. Great idea but the cost? $50 million. His proposed idea for free tuition for Boston high school graduates in nearby state community colleges sounds great too but with every good idea comes the cost. Now we need wait to see how his lofty educational goals can be financed. However, at least he has put forth some new and bold ideas. It is too soon to see where the Walsh Legacy will go but he is indeed an idea mayor.

Boston Police Department Exam Announcement Do you have questions about your career? Would you like to have a choice of jobs that will affect Boston’s future. If so, then please consider becoming a member of the Boston Police Department (BPD) team. The first important step in doing that is taking the Civil Service test; the exam date is two months away – Saturday, March 25, 2017. You must sign up (in advance) for this test online. To sign up and for information on joining the BPD Team log onto mass.gov/civil service. Please remember that it is very important sign up on or before the deadline date of Tuesday, February 21, 2017. If you do not have access to a computer, you may come to the Station C-6 Community Services Office (the CSO at 101 West Broadway) Monday through Friday during regular business hours. You may also come to the CSO on Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to use the BPD comput-ers. Two final reminders: Sign up for the exam on or before February 21. The test takes place on March 25.
6, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson asked Congress for approval to declare war on Germany. It was granted. WWI ended 19 months later on Armistice Day (now Veterans Day in the U.S.), November 11, 1918. As the century mark approaches for this historic conflict, South Boston is preparing to memorialize the part played in that War by the residents and happenings of, in, and around South Boston during these history-making years. To this end, the South Boston World War I Commemoration Committee has been formed. Charter members of the new Committee - Mary Ryan, Bob Allison, Ed Flynn, John Allison, Kevin Conroy, and Rick Winterson - held the first Committee meeting on last Saturday morning, January 21, at the Thomas J. Fitzgerald VFW Post 561.
Discussions at this first meeting ranged over a wide variety of WWI topics. The first event will be some kind of ceremony that recognizes the killed-in-action deaths of South Boston’s WWI veterans. These number just over 100, and include well-known names such as Michael Perkins and Thomas Fitzgerald. The ceremony will be held sometime in April – details to follow – but the initial plan is to focus this event on the indoor memorial of photographs in South Boston High School. Have you seen it? Did you even know that it exists? Relocating this to a more welltraveled site like the Branch Library is perhaps possible. Another immediate concern of the Committee is updating and completing South Boston’s “Hero Squares”, starting with those in honor of veterans of WWI who were killed in action. Eventually, the Committee would work on establishing an outdoor memorial to WWI veterans, similar to the many others in South Boston. Veterans, relatives of anyone alive during WWI, historians, and those interested in helping on the World War I activities over the next 21 months, culminating on Veterans Day, November 11, 2018, are encouraged to contact any member of the South Boston World War I Commemorative Committee. Committee Member Ryan has printed out a 101-name list of known WWI Fallen Heroes.

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
In Defense of Defense. by Rick Winterson It bears repeating that the Patriots’ defense was the target of much criticism during the 2016 regular season. But it bears repeating only to demonstrate how senseless the boo-birds have been all season long. This writer guesses that they got tired of criticizing the Presidential campaign, or simply got crowded out of that particular issue by all the partisan tweets. There was a school of thought that the “Points Against” statistic, where the Pats led the entire NFL – yes, both Conferences – was somehow meaningless, because the Pats played a lot of weak teams. Well, whether that’s true or not, the Pats’ Points Against figures demonstrate the value of their defense in both playoff games – 17 Points Against versus Pittsburgh and 16 Points Against versus Houston, after a stellar, NFL leading 15.8 Points Against, all through the regular season. Now that’s “consistency”, perhaps the most important defensive team virtue. Were there decisive key plays in the Sunday’s AFC Championship win against Pittsburgh? There were many outstanding efforts of course, but this writer would nominate the goal line stand by the Patriots defense after the first half two-minute warning – especially the second down lossmaking tackle by defensive tackle Vincent Valentine. The teams left the field at halftime with the Pats up 17 to 9. All through the second half, they never looked back, while the Steelers were intercepted once and failed to recover one of their two fumbles. This is not to take a single bit of credit away from the Patriots’ offensive efforts. The Brady Bunch scored four touchdowns, which by itself would have been enough to win Sunday’s tilt with the Steelers. LeGarrette Blount ran successfully with as many as six Steelers perched on his shoulders;
Chris Hogan got free for a team playoff record 180 yards, nine catches, and two touchdowns. And there’s yet another interesting “total team” angle to Sunday’s win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. You might recall that Pittsburgh won its previous playoff game versus the Kansas City Chiefs by scoring 18 points – six field goals, no touchdowns. Well, the Pats kicked three field goals on Sunday, as well as scoring three Points After. That means the special teams scored onethird of the Patriots’ 36 points: 3 field goals plus 3 PATs equals 12 out of 36 total points scored. The Patriots incurred just two penalties – a couple of unimportant five-yard infractions – which is another indication of very skillful play. This statistic also reflects extremely well on the coaching – Head Coach Bill Belichick, of course, along with his Coordinators Matt Patricia (defense), Josh McDaniels (offense), and his dozen or so coaches. The current, day-after point spread has the Patriots over the Falcons by just three points, but don’t bet on it (or if you must, take the Patriots). No, this Super Bowl contest will be settled by the defense – if the Falcons are held to 17 points or less by the Pats’ defense, the Pats will win big. Second in importance will be mistakes. At this level of play, the team that makes more mistakes – even if it’s just one more interception or unrecovered fumble – will lose the 2017 Super Bowl. Offense wins headlines; defense and mistake-free play wins games. See you on Sunday, February 4, at 6:30 p.m. somewhere.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 26, 2017
by Rick Winterson The neighborhood of South Boston wears many guises. Not the least it is a place of beauty, and when called for, it’s a place of protest as well. Both of these particular roles were reflected last weekend in two recent fine art exhibits. One exhibit at the Medicine Wheel’s Spoke Gallery (110 K Street, second floor), another at The Distillery Gallery (216 East Second Street, lower level). Medicine Wheel’s Spoke Gallery is the site of a striking exhibition of eight large works by John Provenzano, who has his own studio in South Boston’s King Terminal. John’s medium is acrylic on canvas; the dimensions of his painting generally exceed six feet. His creations are brilliantly colorful semi-abstractions, which also contain mixed media messages – printed words, barcodes, and so on. Many of his works contain lightly rendered faces among the brushwork that makes up his background spectra. Make it a point to attend his exhibit’s free recep-

tion on Saturday, March 4, which will feature a gallery talk by John. The Distillery’s exhibit was for one night, and one night only – Friday evening, January 20, the night of the Presidential Inauguration in Washington. The topic of the exhibit goes without saying. It was a pop-up protest exhibit, with individual works by many local artists.
A “live” exhibit at The Distillery’s “re.volt.ing” – a Statue of Liberty.
Oddly enough (in this writer’s opinion), the works weren’t entitled or attributed. Among the many protesting creations at this exhibit, perhaps the most pungent protest statement was the exhibit’s own title: “re.volt.ing”! There are many levels of meaning that present gerund possesses, especially when punctuated as it was. The “re.volt.ing” exhibit began and ended on Friday evening; ginbased refreshments were served. Yes, South Boston is home to many artists, art forms, and artistic messages. Enjoy them all – they are both beautiful and expressive; they don’t last forever.

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf? Not the Lyric Stage!
some pretty heavy ensemble work, with Edmiston cleverly pulling out tensions. In Erica Spyres portrayal of Honey, we see a subtle mirror wide-eyed aghast midwest sensibility floating across her face after being shocked into East Coast academic degeneration. Her interior world plays out with a cinematic sensitivity that would not work on bigger stages-but works well up close and personal in the cozy Lyric. She and Dan Whelton’s better than earnest- yet still very boyishly virile Nick- are both fulcrum and foil to the dark imaginings of George and Martha.
By Richard Campbell
F
or many Americans their primary experience with this classic play is the 1966 Mike Nichols directed film version starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. With the passing of Edward Albee this past fall, the Lyric’s Artistic Director, Spiro Veloudos’ decision to entreat director Scott Edmiston to stage this landmark renewal is certainly timely. Staged with masterful fluidity by Edmiston in a way that conjures up vivid stage pictures this production elevates the story with remarkable economy, not normally associated with this pugilistic late night drinking saga. A great deal of the light revealed in this production should be attributed to Paula Plum’s heroic, fresh interpretation of Martha- a college professors’ wife whose emotional roller coaster sets a standard for ribald humor, jovial manipulation, vitriolic anger, and expressive loneliness. Plum’s many Sixties comedic gestural displays of ardent femininity, combined with sorrowful despair, hold the audience fairly spellbound. Steven Barkhimer is no slouch in his role of the soft sweater padded professor George, whose meanness is more of a cunning intellectual game that reveals his wounded masochism. Their moments of appeasement for the continuance of the game, cement the chilling consequences of their love-hate relationship. As they draw their innocent post-faculty-party house guests, (Nick and Honey) into a cat and mouse psychodrama loaded with timely modern themes and indiscreet tales; one is reminded how many contemporary playwrights are one note Charlies by comparison. This is a monster play with delightful rich verbiage that cascades images and thoughts to mind
Paula Plum as Martha, Dan Whelton as Nick in racing waterfalls. As a vestige of that work hard, play hard, take no prisoners World War II generation, Virginia Wolf is an icon of American theater for good reason. Balancing the deceptive economy of the story is a lush narrative that delves deep into the modern American psyche exploring a vast set of themes, From alienation of societal demands, the sanctity of marriage, to sexual dominance of male centered culture, the mistaken notion of fragile femininity, master race eugenics, masks of social conformity, the role of childhood in adult power, and perhaps most importantly: the illusion of finding happiness after sorrow and loss. Warning: the heart is writ large and severely wounded.
as new members of the university community, understand that Martha’s invitation to after party drinks could be critical to Nick’s future. She being the daughter of the college president, who despite being married to a failed terminal associate history professor George, eclipses his academic impotence with her beguiling street smarts and sexual cattiness. Over the years I’ve often wondered why Nick, the earnest biology professor, and Honey, his opaque wife, don’t bolt from the George and Martha’s lair a little earlier in the evening. But their evolution is emblematic of the loss of innocence in America during the 1960’s- a nation catapulted into a dehumanized future we know all too well.
The central conceit is that the prototypical young academic couple, yearning for acceptance
As the drinks are served, the dominant / recessive relationship between the two couples involves
Whelton mixes a taut innocent sensibility with the spring loaded testosterone reaction to Georges’ constant goading about the young biologist’s eugenic possibilitiesthe picture of an idealistic academic not yet jaded by the system. In a society increasingly concerned with nothing but monetary value defined through technological ability, Nick and Honey harken back to a simpler time indeed. A sign of an effective stage play is when time passes fast, and for a three-hour production, this show moves at breath taking speed. The production values for this show are right on: from the carefully dated 60’s clothing by Charles Shoonmaker, to the crooked charm of bookcase filled teal and cream academic bungalow set created by Janie Howland, and jewel like lighting by Karen Perlow, there is a delicate intricacy that plays upon our emotions. The combined result is the restoration of a time piece, a playwright’s play, into our century with extraordinary insight. For those who rarely attend the theater, and veteran theater goers alike, this play reminds us of the essence of live drama.

“Jaiden’s a keeper for sure,” she said, enthusiastically. “She’s smart and outgoing. She’s very loving and caring…helpful to my mom and dad. She loves traveling, especially down south to see her grand ma-ma, Marjorie Miller. “She just donated her hair to the Children with Hair Loss (initiative) on behalf of her cousin Cameron Miller who has cancer,” her mom added. “That’s the kind of girl she is. Compassionate and loves helping other kids she meets at the Ollie, in school, or anywhere else.”

Rep. Lynch Calls for Strong Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board JANUARY 23,BOSTON, MA – Today, Congressman Stephen F. Lynch (D-Boston), the lead Democrat on the National Security subcommittee, wrote to President Donald J. Trump calling for an operational bipartisan Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board. Currently, the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board consists of only two members, has no chairman, and lacks the quorum necessary to do its work. Congressman Lynch urged the President to appoint a full membership to the Board so it can fulfill its critical mission to conduct robust oversight of United States counterterrorism policies and programs in the shared interest of national security and the protection of privacy and civil liberties. “The Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board plays a critical role in protecting Americans’ privacy and civil liberties and ensuring the counterterrorism programs we have in place play an essential role in promoting our national security. President Trump should act swiftly to nominate a full Board so it can continue its important work to increase transparency and accountability for key counterterrorism policies and implement safeguards against unwarranted governmental intrusion on privacy and civil liberties,” said Congressman Lynch. In particular, the letter cites the Implementing Recommendations of the 9/11 Commission Act of 2007, which states that the Board “must consist of a full-time chairman and four additional members, appointed
by the President with the advice and consent of the U.S. Senate for non-concurrent six year terms. No more than three members can represent the same political party. In order to initiate investigations and policy reviews, conduct official business, and hold public hearings, the Board is required to maintain a quorum of at least three members. Moreover, only the Board chairman is authorized to appoint staff.” The letter notes that as of January 2017, “the Board consists of only two members, both of whom represent the same political party and one whose term is scheduled to expire at the end of the month. As a result, the Board cannot satisfy the quorum necessary to do its job and will remain unable to carry out its responsibilities absent the nomination and confirmation of new members.” Congressman Lynch highlighted a recent Politico report by Adam Klein of the bipartisan Center for a New American Security, which emphasizes the need for the government to both protect both national security and civil liberties. Klein notes that “a functioning credible independent board is good for the intelligence community” and the American public’s privacy. In addition, the letter notes Klein’s statement that “the board’s reports can help legitimize controversial programs and prove to skeptical allies that the U.S. prioritizes privacy protections. By contrast, a defunct board would be an embarrassing eyesore on the oversight landscape, degrading U.S. credibility and fueling skepticism abroad.” The Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board most notably conducted a comprehensive review of the National Security Agency’s bulk telephone records
program in 2013. In its final report, the Board concluded that the program demonstrated a limited counterterrorism value while also lacking a viable legal foundation and implicating First and Fourth Amendment constitutional concerns. The Board recommended that the government terminate the program, which proved instrumental as Congress sought to develop meaningful surveillance reform legislation and ultimately enacted the landmark USA Freedom Act on a bipartisan basis in June of 2015. Congressman Lynch voted for the USA Freedom Act, when it passed the House by a vote of 338-88.
