Kids Enjoy Dinner at Tierney By Rick Winterson It’s the Season to be thankful, of course. It’s also the Season, as the end of the year approaches, to renew old friendships, as well as getting ready for some new ones when the year changes. This spirit was behind the “Friendsgiving” Dinner held at the Tierney Learning Center last Tuesday, November21. It was a treat to see over 60 good kids – really good kids – enjoy themselves so much. Jose Sotz is the Program & Technology Coordinator at the Tierney Learning Center, which is located in the Anne M. Lynch Homes (a.k.a. “Old Colony”) looking out over Columbia Road and Day Boulevard. Jose is originally from Guatemala; he now lives in Cambridge. He holds degrees in Humanities/ Social Science/Spanish from UMass Dartmouth and Cambridge College. He has been

at the Learning Center for Five year, and oversees the programs and any students needing remedial work to better their skills, especially with computers. In discussing this, Jose said that the Learning Center had formed a community partnership with South Boston’s Boys & Girls Club. After school training through this partnership is available to young residents of the Lynch (“Old Colony”) and McCormack (“Old Harbor”) Developments, between the ages of 6 and 14. If you are interested in the programs for the fall of next year (2018), look at Facebook, @Training Center, or contact 617-850-9157. The Friendsgiving Dinner was funded through Kay Walsh’s intervention and efforts (is she everywhere?) at the Action Center on West Broadway. SBYH Honors Nick Collins

By Richard Campbell

Hockey loyalists showed in fair numbers Saturday November 25th at Carson Place for the annual John Cunniff Award which was presented to Nick Collins for his work in raising 5 million- for the restoration of the Murphy Rink completed in March, as well as his life-long participation in hockey from South Boston to college, and beyond. The entertainment highlights of the event included a funny video shot on location in South Boston, thanking Representative Collins, and music provided by “Cherrie Bomb” featuring SBYH’s Hockey Mom, Leanne Burke. There were commemorative hockey stamp reproductions from the US Postal service on hand, and gifts given to honor key stakeholders in SBYH, (Tom McGrath, Ted Cunniff, Millennium Partners) for their contributions to the South Boston Youth Hockey.
