East First Street Dog Park Opens

by Rick Winterson It has been a while in coming, but it drew quite a crowd when it happened. The East First Street Dog Park officially opened its gates on Thursday morning, October 27th. About half of those in attendance were furry, four-footed, and canine in nature. The rest of us in attendance wore clothes.

In many respects, this is an unusual park. Their number is growing, but dog parks around Boston still are not that common.

The leash law in Boston applies to all dogs not on private property; dog parks allow them to run free inside those parks’ fence lines.

This meeting was one of the many steps in the “South Boston Bus Stop & Service Program”. The topic: Schedules and routes for the 5, 7, 9 , 10, and 11 buses in the City Point area of South Boston. meeting. The agenda was set by MBTA staff, Mass DOT staff, and Nelsom / Nygaard, a consultancy.

Some specific problems and issues were cited as part of the meeting’s background. The ridership on the #7 bus line has increased by 65% - by almost twothirds – while bus trips increased by only 26% - about one-quarter. Some 16,000 passengers get on and off all bus stops between continued on page 4

Letters Vote NO on Question 5 (The Community Preservation Act) In the upcoming elections, voting residents of the City of Boston will be asked to cast their vote either for or against Question 5 – Whether (or not) to fund a Community Preservation Act (CPA) by adding 1% to your property taxes. South Boston Online thinks there are two key reasons to vote “NO:” on Question 5 on Election Day, November 8.

The first reason is that the law is both poorly and vaguely written. Yes, it is often necessary to use a lot of words to make sure that a new law is exact and accurate. But please consider what Question 5 actually asks you to fund. It covers environmental projects such as green spaces, recreation facilities like playgrounds, and restoration of historic buildings. When added to Question 5’s core aim of creating affordable housing, that adds up to four CPA objectives – CPA Question 5 becomes a “something-foreveryone” ballot question. Each of those four objectives should really be a separate ballot question.

The money to be raised is also indefinite. We have seen one estimate of $20 million ($20,000,000) per year. That figure includes matching money from the state, and it’s well known that the Commonwealth of Massachusetts itself is in a cost reduction mode. How much will CPA Question 5 actually raise? Do you know?

The second and more important key reason for voting “NO” on Question 5 is that Community Preservation should be funded by reducing costs elsewhere. Hard to do perhaps, but not impossible. It’s well known, for example, that there are too many student seats and even too many entire school buildings in Boston. Shut them down and divert the money to CPA. And many planned projects, which don’t happen to be as important as affordable housing, can be easily delayed for a while. Boston is basically a well-off, economically healthy City, so let’s be patient. The money for CPA will be there in a couple of years, without any new taxes.

Please consider voting “NO” on Question 5.

Catholic Sisters Vote Yes on Qustion 3 We, the undersigned Catholic sisters, urge citizens of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to vote YES on Question 3 on November 8, 2016. Question 3, also known as The Act to Prevent Cruelty to Farm Animals, it calls for an end to the worst abuses of animals raised for food by phasing out extreme methods of farm animal confinement.

The Act would prevent farm animals from being crammed into cages so small they can’t even turn around or extend their limbs, and will also ensure that certain food items sold in the Commonwealth are compliant with these modest standards. We support this initiative because it is consistent with Catholic Social Teaching and with our belief in our responsibility to care for God’s creation.

Within days or even hours of birth, calves raised for veal are often chained by their necks in crates too narrow to turn around or lie down comfortably. The crates essentially immobilize these playful, energetic creatures, preventing them from engaging in almost any natural behaviors.

For years, female pigs used for breeding are confined in crates only two feet wide—so small the animals can’t even turn around or take more than a step forward or backward. This extreme immobilization atrophies the pigs’ muscles and bones. Since these inquisitive animals are denied mental stimulation, many become neurotic and exhibit abnormal behaviors, such as repetitive biting of the bars in front of them.

On many egg factory farms, hens are crammed into cages so small the birds can’t even spread their wings. Packed five or more to a cage, each hen is forced to spend her whole life in a meager amount of space that’s smaller than an iPad. Virtually unable to move, the hens can’t engage in almost any of their natural behaviors, such as perching, nesting, foraging or even walking more than a few steps.

It is inhumane to confine animals in cages so small they can’t turn around or stretch their limbs. Keeping veal calves chained by the neck, pigs in metal cages barely larger than their bodies, and hens in less space than a letter-sized sheet of paper is surely in violation of our duty as stewards to all God’s creation. This Act embodies the values expressed in this statement from ourBishops: “Catholic teaching about the stewardship of creation leads us to question certain farming practices, such as the operation of massive confined animal feeding operations. We believe that these operations should be carefully regulated and monitored so that environmental risks are minimized and animals are treated as creatures of God” (“For I Was Hungry and You Gave Me Food” fourth section: A Catholic Agenda for Action: Pursuing a More Just Agricultural System; subsection V: Stewardship of Creation. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, 2003 Agricultural Pastoral) We urge the citizens of Massachusetts, especially those who take seriously their Catholic faith and their responsibility to care for God’s creation, to help end the cruelest forms of confinement of animals raised for food by voting YES on Question 3 this November.

“SB Health Seaport” Now Open for Business

T

he South Boston Community Health Center is well known for providing a wide spectrum of health services at its two locations along West Broadway.

Patient visits there number in the tens of thousands each year.

Now that our Seaport District along the Waterfront is growing – upwards of 10,000 residents will ultimately live there, as well as an even larger number of job holders coming to work each day – it makes good sense to have a health facility located there as well. And that is exactly what has happened?

On Wednesday morning, October 26th, the blue ribbon was cut and the “South Boston Health Seaport” is now accepting patients.

“South Boston Health Seaport” is a branch of our own South Boston Community Health Center. It is located at 505 Congress Street, at the intersection of D and Congress Streets. It is conveniently sited on the street floor of John Drew’s Waterside Place, just upstairs from the Silver

MBTA Bus Service Review... continued from pg. 1 Broadway Station and the City Point “T” Yard every working day. The consultant showed some already developed plans for improving individual bus stops.

And leading into the question period, while acknowledging that all kinds of problems exist, the “T” referred to the meeting as “a 30% meeting”, meaning that the overall planning and implementation processes are a bit less than one-third complete.

Furthermore, questions were only taken and logged in for further consideration – no answers were provided.

Many attendees objected to this.

South Boston Online won’t attempt to duplicate or to list all of the questions that came up. A good many of them have been around, at least as long ago as a similar meeting held last year.

This prior meeting was held in part because of the record snows in early 2015 that forced bus route changes to be put in place. In fact, John Allison, who was attending in his role as the Mayor’s liaison to South Boston, pointedly expressed his impatience as to why the “T” was addressing the same questions that were brought up last year. Touchie McDonough then pointed out that the same issues had been on the table as long ago as 15 years and gave some solutions from his own experience.

At the risk of making an editorial statement, it became clear to South Boston Online that the central problem with South Boston’s “T” service is a lack of equipment (especially during the weekday commuting hours), as well as the drivers to operate said equipment. While rerouting can provide partial solutions, like using sections of Day Boulevard

or inbounding certain buses along roads parallel to Broadway, it won’t solve all the problems. Perhaps shuttles or even selected express routes (at times) would help.

Be patient. We “T” riders have a long way to go yet, an oncoming winter, and several more meetings ahead of us. If nothing else, Wednesday’s meeting did serve to focus those who attended (including the MBTA contingent) on the following issue: The “T” is still unsatisfactory and the basic remedy is much more equipment during congested ridership periods. And that won’t come cheap. Or soon.

by Rick Winterson South Boston knows how to celebrate its important occasions, from patriotic events to its many fundraisers. There were two major Halloween “times” in 2016 – the “Children’s Magical Halloween Castle a weekend back, and “Trick or Treat on Broadway” on October 31 itself.

The Halloween celebration in Fort Independence during a weekend prior to Halloween itself is always one of the biggest, most well-attended “Southie times” on our calendar. When as many as 10,000 are guests of the Castle Island Association’s “Children’s Magical Halloween Castle”, many of them in full costume, it’s certain to be an occasion. The 34th Annual Castle “Time” was no exception, despite a stormy interval on Day One.

The first day of the 2016 edition of the Castle Island Association’s “Children’s Magical Halloween Castle” was a (literal) washout. However, it wasn’t a complete bust – the Castle Island Association ladies minding the sally port moved under the port’s arch; 1,372 guests, mostly children, showed up – believe it or not. Sunday, the 23rd, was mobbed.

Bill Spain came up from Braintree; the lines were long but goodnatured, and the Castle itself was a tribute to the hard work and imagination of the Castle Island Association. The creativity and effort that go into each Magical Halloween Castle is already incredible. Each year, it just gets better. One scene was especially touching – the Wizard’s corner in the Oz room, where Ed Haugh, the Chief Wiz’, stood for so many years, assuming the movie role played by Frank Morgan in the Oz movie – “Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!”

“Trick or Treat on Broadway”, sponsored by South Boston’s Chamber of Commerce and Neighborhood Development Corporation, was last Monday, 4 to 6 p.m. The costumes were spectacular; the weather was cool but clear, the Monday afternoon sun set just as the event drew to a close. In this event, the merchants, enterprises, and dining spots dress up in costumes, and hand out “Tricks or Treats” up and down Broadway.

The fall weather, now noticeably much cooler, was perfect. It went from clear blue skies to a perfct orange sunset just after the festivities closed out at 6 p.m. This one is for the kids and bimps of all ages. Their costumes were both imaginative and fetching, as were those of the businesses up and down Broadway. Salem couldn’t have done it better. And besides, in 1692 A.D., all those witches lived in what was called “Salem Crossing” back then. These days, we know that area as Danvers, not Salem.

Halloween is a fitting, celebratory way to observe autumn’s progress. The Farmer’s Market in Perkins Square closed out its last Monday this year; it’ll return in June, 2017, on the first Monday – the 5th.

And mark off next year’s Halloween on your 2017 calendar right now. You’ll have a great “Southie time” and it’s fabulous for the kids.

Lynch Calls on FERC to Halt Pipeline BOSTON, MA – In the wake of the recent fatal pipeline explosion in Alabama, Congressman Stephen F. Lynch (D-Boston) called on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to halt the permitting process and construction for the proposed Spectra pipelines in West Roxbury and Weymouth, Massachusetts. In a letter to FERC Chairman Norman Bay, Congressman Lynch highlighted the serious public safety risks of placing a natural gas pipeline in densely populated areas such as West Roxbury and Weymouth.

“I am deeply concerned about this week’s tragic pipeline explosion in Alabama and I believe that FERC needs to take action

to ensure that proper safety measures are in place to protect local communities from the dangers of these pipelines. We are witnessing significant damage from pipeline incidents in more remote areas across the country. In the wake of these accidents, it is unimaginable that FERC would proceed with approval for pipelines in more densely populated areas,” said Congressman Lynch.

According to the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), there have been more than 220 pipeline incidents in 2016. On Monday, a fatal gasoline pipeline explosion in Shelby County, Alabama killed one pipeline worker and injured five others, igniting two wild-

On Friday October 28th, 18 teens and 4 staff enjoyed a trip to canobie lake park for “SCREEEM FEST” . the teens were terrified by the haunted houses, rode the thrill rides and ate some pizza and cotton candy and had a wonderful friday night with their friends. special thanks to the tynan council who picked up half the tab so the teens could afford to go on the trip.

By Kevin Devlin They are happy, young girls who are having fun in school and afterwards at the Joseph M. Tierney Learning Center. The three youngsters experiencing the freshness of life and featured this week in SBOL are Yarlenis Mejia, Jalissa Brown-Pierre, and Sasha Naranjo.

Yarlenis Mejia, 8, is the daughter of Yulenny Mejia. She would also like to give a shout-out to her grandmother, Rosa Ortiz.

Yarlenis is in the second grade at Up Academy Holland which is located in Dorchester. This school is a “high-performing tuition-free, college preparatory elementary school that aims to ensure its students acquire the knowledge, skills, and strength of character necessary to succeed on the path to college. Yarlenis’ favorite subject is reading and someday she plans on being a police officer so she can help people stay safe and secure.

Yarlenis’ favorite color is purple.

Her favorite food is pizza. She loves watching TV and enjoys “Jessie”, “The Lodge”, “Sam and Cat”, as well as “Teen Titans Go.” She also liked watching Red Sox slugger, Big Papi Ortiz, smash the ball and listening to Ariana Grande sing.

In her leisure time, Yarlenis plays with her cousins, watches TV, and does various exercises like pushups.

In the world of sports, she likes playing basketball with her friends in the Perkins schoolyard or over in the hoop courts at Moakley Park.

Additionally, she imagines herself playing golf when she’s dreaming.

If Yarlenis was the president of the United States, she said that she would, “Have no bad guys, nobody would be poor or homeless, only rich…and people would share and care and everyone would be free.”

Jalissa Brown-Pierre, 10, is the daughter of Jessica Brown and Joel Pierre. She also has a brother, Dashon Murray, and a white and black cat named Tiny. Jalissa is in the fourth grade at the Michael J. Perkins School which is located within the Old Colony Development. This school is “preparing to provide our children with an unparalleled learning experience that broadens them as thinkers, problems solvers, and change agents” and to “educate, empower, and elevate each young person to excellence as learners and global citizens.” Jalissa’s favorite subjects are math and gym and someday she hopes to be a firefighter and save people in need.

Jalissa’s favorite colors are purple and pink. Her favorite food is Roti, a West Indian recipe from Trinidad. Her favorite TV shows are “Liv and Maddie” which first aired in 2013, as well as “Ever After High.” She loves NBA star, Lebron James, and likes listening to Nicki Minai, a Trinidadian-born rapper, singer, and songwriter. In her leisure time, Jalissa watches TV, plays on her IPhone, and sleeps. In sports, she shoots baskets at the Perkins schoolyard or at the basketball courts which are located within Moakley Park.

Sasha’s favorite treats are Chinese food and pizza. Her favorite colors are pink, purple, and blue. In sports, she plays hoop and soccer with her dad in Moakley Park. In her free time, she enjoys going to her friend’s homes and playing video games, watches TV, goes outside to play, or rides her bike when the sun is shining and the weather friendly.

If Sasha was our president, she said she’d “Help poor people get food and housing, and help old people get around by offering them free rides to the grocery store and other places they need to go.”

Dog Park Opens... continued from page 1 Point bus yard is located. The park stretches along First Street for 250 feet and it is 50 feet across. That’s 12,500 square feet – roughly onethird of an acre – of running room.

The change in layout that went along with the new area for dogs has also freed up more space for parking cars – an increase of 30 spaces along First Street, from 65 to 95.

Primarily through the good will of Massport and its CEO, Tom Glynn, there will be a halfmile-long, multi-purpose park built along East First Street. It has been named in memory of the much-missed Tommy Butler. The Thomas Butler Park will provide an attractive green corridor and buffer zone between the residences on First Street and the Conley Terminal, which is being expanded to meet the demands of shipping from the newly expanded Panama Canal.

The East First Street Dog Park is the first installment of the much larger, overall Butler Park area.

Mayor Walsh, Massport CEO Glynn, and many of our elected officials attended the opening; a ribbon-cutting followed the speaking program, much of which was devoted to mentioning all of the people and official entities who played a part in creating the dog park. Helen Butler was on hand for the opening. She was accompanied by the Butler family’s dog “Brewski”, a shepherd blend, who is now the new dog park’s official mascot. Atty. Peter Golemme, who spearheaded the establishment of South Boston’s original dog park on the MWRA’s pumping station land, was present as well.

At Massport we’re working hard to be a good neighbor. That’s why we’re adding new green space in South Boston as part of the construction of the Thomas J. Butler Freight Corridor.

• Last week, Massport opened the new East First Street Dog Park alongside state and local elected officials. The quarter-acre park is located on East First Street, between M Street and O Street, and features benches, a pet fountain, and doggie exercise equipment.

• The Thomas J. Butler Memorial Park, also on East First Street, is scheduled to open in 2017. The beautiful landscaped 4.5 acre green space will include multi-use paths, improved lighting and interpretive panels that celebrate South Boston’s history.

By Kevin Devlin On Saturday, October 29, the South Boston Pop Warner league officially ended its season by having players on the “A” and “D” teams turn in their uniforms. The players then played flag football games before being treated to food and drinks, compliments of Doughboy Pizza and Deli and the Pop Warner league.

Everything has to fall in place for such a league to stay afloat, especially when it comes to coaching. “I’ve been coaching for the past three seasons,” he said.

“And I love it. I like the opportunity to work with the kids.

I was a ski instructor for 15 years with Youth Enrichment Services (YES) so I just used my experience there to coach football. It’s worked out well.”

The league had a successful year with the “A” and “E” teams finishing with 7-1 records.

The cheerleading squads also performed at a high standard.

The “A” team cheerleaders recently finished in second place in the Hockomock League cheerleading tournament and will be competing in the New England Regional Championships to be held in Springfield on November 14.

“The kids had fun,” said league president, Danny Ferrara. “They practiced hard and stuck with it all season long. We are proud of their efforts and that of the coaches and all the other volunteers that make this program successful…including game officials and Boston EMS.

“We are excited about next year,” said Robert “Bobby” Ferrara, a key member of the league board. “It should be great.

“If you know any players or cheerleaders who want to have fun in a structured and productive program,” he added. “They are welcome to come and be part of the league as players or cheerleaders.”

“We are also fortunate to have such great sponsors,” he added. “Without them, it would be impossible to run this league.”

It seems like yesterday that the cheerleaders and players started practicing at the McCarthy-Rosher Memorial Field; and now their ninetieth season is history. And next year league officials will be proudly experience their twentieth season and are looking forward to it.

A Time for K’s Place...

by Rick Winterson In accord with a longstanding South Boston tradition of raising money by having a great celebration, a fundraising party was held in the McKeon Post ballroom on Ellery Street last Friday. Music, dancing, and excellent company came together to help support “K’s Place”, a much-needed transitional house for women.

“K’s Place”, now a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, is the vision of Joanie Lynch and her many friends. They see a need and then act upon it. The party at the Post was very successful. Their next event will be held at St. Joseph’s Church on Cardinal O’Connell Way in the West End. That’s Fr. Joe White’s new parish – Joanie and he hope to see you there on Friday evening, November 11 at 8 p.m. The fabulous Don White – singer, songwriter, and comedian – will be featured.

Catholic Charities Labouré Center Christmas House Tour Volunteer Meeting Wednesday, November 9th at 6:30 p.m. at the Labouré Center The Annual Catholic Charities Labouré Center Christmas House Tour has become a beloved South Boston tradition. The tour will be held this year on Saturday, December 3rd and Sunday, December 4th and features five homes, each decorated by a team of Boston designers.

We invite you to our volunteer meeting to be held Wednesday, November 9th at 6:30 p.m. at the Labouré Center, 275 West Broadway. The tour requires many volunteers as greeters in the homes, ticket sellers, assistance in the shoppe, transportation help and social media -we welcome old and new residents to join us!

Labouré Center will also host a Christmas Shoppe which will open the weekend of November 11th. The shoppe will be selling Christmas decorations, gifts, ornaments and much more. The funds raised by the Christmas House Tour support the social service programs of Labouré Center.

Project Funding

The redevelopment of the former City of Boston D6 police station was made possible, in part, by a contribution of more than $4M from the City of Boston, as well as the donation of the site. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts contributed over $3M. Patriot Homes funding sources include: private equity, private construction and permanent loans, City of Boston Department of Neighborhood Development (DND), Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) housing program funds, Boston Redevelopment Authority Inclusionary Development funds, Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston, and grants from several sources, including: Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office, The Home Depot Foundation, the Ruby W. and LaVon P. fires that burned over 30 acres of land. This is the second incident in two months for the Colonial Pipeline, which had a significant gas leak in September. In April, a natural gas pipeline in Salem, Pennsylvania, operated by Spectra Energy, exploded injuring one person and damaging two homes.

“We have told FERC repeatedly that placing a natural gas pipeline in an active quarry blast zone, like West Roxbury, or in an industrial area with densely populated neighborhoods nearby, as is the case in Weymouth, are serious public safety risks. If a

If you are up at that time, Daylight Savings Time officially reverts to Eastern Standard Time precisely at 2 a.m., early this coming Sunday morning, November 6 th.

Practically speaking, you could just paste this reminder to your bathroom mirror so you’ll remember to put your clocks and watches back one hour on Sunday morning or the Saturday evening before, as you go to bed. Each piece of your electronic equipment should be programmed to make the change on its own.
