The South Boston Community Health Center has been a prominent member of South Boston’s support systems. For many years, it has been a bellwether of where modern medicine is headed; it dies this by caring for many thousands of local residents at its two West Broadway locations. Wednesday morning, October 26, the Health Center formally extended its benign footprint to the waterfront. The blue ribbon in front of 505 Congress Street (John Drew’s Waterfront project) was cut at 9:30. The “South Boston Health Seaport” facility, dedicated to the memory of Paul Drew, was open. The Moon Was Near; Exceptional Tides
We sometimes forget that South Boston is a maritime neighborhood. Google up a map of our hometown and check it out – more than 80% of our border is salt sea water. Seriously. Early last week, the moon was not only brilliantly full, with a slight orange overtone, it had approached the earth more closely than usual. This caused extra-low tides, as in “mud flats all around”, and correspondingly high tides, as in washing over the Curley Center fences and Morrissey Boulevard. And these weren’t the usual high course tides that occur at the March and September equinoxes.

colleagues – more than a hundred of them – showed up last night to celebrate his candidacy, at a party thrown for him by a truly outstanding Election Committee. This Committee included State Representative Nick Collins, City Councilor-at-Large Michael Flaherty, District 2 City Councilor Bill Linehan, and Register of Deeds candidate Stephen Murphy. The fifth member of this ad hoc committee, Congressman Stephen Lynch, was detained in Washington on urgent business. There was an optimistic buzz among those who attended Paul’s celebration. It was a reunion of sorts; the optimism surrounding Paul’s campaign was audible. Attorney General Dan Conley was a welcome surprise guest. And Paul made no secret about his
wish that many people from South Boston come to Hingham on Election Day (Tuesday, November 8) to help out at the polling places. At 7 p.m., the program began. Each “committee” member spoke – praising both Paul and his run for office, and greeting all of the guests. Paul’s remarks were wideranging, beginning with thankyous to everyone there, as well as to CAPO and its staff for providing such great support to his celebration. Interestingly, he referred to his political background in South Boston as being extremely useful in his current position as a Hingham Selectman. He then brought his remarks home by revealing it was his mother’s birthday. He and the crowd sang “Happy Birthday” to her. It was a great get-together. Good luck in your campaign, Paul.

Poetry in South Boston

Last Saturday afternoon saw another of the increasingly popular poetry readings at the Branch Library from 1:30 to 3. As usual, the event was emceed by Dotty Morris and featured some of the members of her South Boston writing group. You may or may not know that, in addition to the many other cultural outlets in South Boston, there is an informal but very active number of people engaged in cultural writing. The public is always welcome at these readings in the Branch Library; watch for the next one yourself. They are free. Dotty Morris, a poet in her own right, served skillfully as the afternoon’s Emcee. Rick Winterson began the 90-minute session with a brief discussion of Shakespearean sonnets, and their ongoing
value 400 years after Shakespeare’s death in Stratford on Avon. We haven’t enough space to mention everyone in detail, but there were many high-quality readings. Pater Schofield began the readings with the sharp imagery of his “I Walked the Island, referring to Castle Island, of course. Elaine Croce Happnie read a delightful poem about the “T’s” Red Line. Lorie Walsh followed with her sardonic poem “Lunch”, which reveals the bigotry that penetrates so many of our seemingly innocent gatherings. Many of you might think that poetry is always a serious, serious pursuit. You can’t be blamed for having that opinion, after being inundated with so-called “confessional poetry” late in the last century. However, last Saturday in the Branch Library, humorous poetry abounded, including lim-
SOUTHBOSTONONLINE.COM ericks. Bob Russell read a poem by English lyricist W.S. Gilbert, Dan McCole told an Irish ghost story (hey, Halloween is coming, after all), and Joe Kebartas closed the readings with “Joe Longlegs, Sue Shortlegs”, which had a happy, short-legged ending. It was a good session. Be sure to attend next time. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the quality of the poetry and the fun you’ll have listening to the “voices of South Boston”. The
poetry readings are open to adults, from young adults (the politically correct term for teenagers) to mature men and women – the current record is held by a poet and one of Saturday’s readers Mary Doriot, who has turned 97. And please attend the Library Book Sale on Saturday, November 19, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Lorie Walsh’s “Musical Memories” Singalong on Monday, November 28, at 1 p.m.

Fire Safety Bill Signed
Last week, a bill filed by State Representative Nick Collins related to public safety and hot works was signed into law. This bill, cosponsored by both Rep. Collins and Senator Kenneth J. Donnelly (D-Arlington), was drawn up after the tragic fire caused by unpermitted welding that took the lives of two Boston Firefighters in the Back Bay in 2014. The bill will establish a commission consisting of primary fire safety officials in the Commonwealth, members appointed by the Governor and Legislature, as well as experienced professionals in the burning and hot works trades. The commission will evaluate the current regulations, punishments and penalties of welding

practices to avoid future fires. It will also investigate and study the current requirements for obtaining licenses and permits governing cutting, welding, and other hot work processes that involve an operation capable of initiating fires or explosions to determine if the state fire code adequately protects the safety of the public and first responders. “The safety of our Commonwealth’s citizens must always be our first priority, especially our firefighters and first responders,” stated Rep. Collins. “It is my hope that this commission will find and fix the flaws under current requirements and practices to ensure accidents like the fire in the Back Bay never happen again.”

By Kevin Devlin On Sunday, October 23, the South Boston Yacht Club entertainment committee held a retirement party for their beloved secretary, Marilyn Collins. Friends and family members gathered to show their appreciation of a job well done; wishing her well in her future endeavors. Marilyn worked at the yacht club for fifteen years as their go-to person. She did the payroll, took care of billing matters, overseen the stewards, bartenders, cleaners, launch operators, and those involved in the summer junior sailing program. She also obtained permits, accepted and processed new membership applications, as well as hired and fired personnel. She said she did so much she couldn’t remember everything. It’s a fact that not too many people can conclude they loved every aspect and every minute of their job, but Marilyn readily conceded to this affirmation. “It’s been an incredible experience working here,” she said, with a smile. “I’ve met amazing and wonderful people and formed lifelong relationships. But I’ll never really leave. I love it

She greeted everyone who came into the club with a smile and a kind word. She’s a genuinely nice person. She’s quiet and didn’t want a party but we overruled her wishes and organized this party so everyone could say goodbye to her. We’ve also got a bunch of goodwill and farewell ‘messages in a bottle’ that the members wrote to her so she can read them in her leisure. Everyone has kind words for her and she’s going to be missed.”

Safe Wheels for Sydni....Here She Grows AGain Many of you know our amazing friend Sydni Pecevich from the Safe Home for Sydni project that made her S. Boston home handicap accessible. The modifications were a blessing and have enabled Sydni to continue living at home full time with her sister, brother and Cathy, a single mom who has devoted her life to caring and advocating for Sydni. For those unfamiliar with Sydni’s story, at 2 months old she was diagnosed with a rare malignant brain tumor. She endured extensive chemotherapy, surgeries and hospitalizations. Sydni was not expected to survive but she has, defying doctors’ expectations. Sydni has many disabilities, but she faces them head-on daily. Sydni is a survivor, living a happy, cancer free life and getting ready to celebrate her 12th birthday in November. The challenge we face today is that Sydni is growing rapidly from FALL GYM PROGRAMS HALLOWEEN PARTY th
The Tynan Community Center Council Annual Halloween Party will be held today October 27 from 3:30-5:00 pm for children 10 & under. Please join us for some ghoulish games, freaky fun, frightening food and Costume Parade with prizes. Party will be held in the Cafeteria.
TOTS GYM Tots gym is for boys and girls, ages 4-6. This program will be held on Monday and Thursday afternoon, from 3:00pm to 4:00pm. The participants will enjoy free play time followed by simple game activities that will help develop their motor skills but most importantly have fun while keeping active and learning new games. The Zoning Commission of the City of Boston hereby gives notice, in accordance with Chapter 665 of the Acts of 1956, as amended, that a public hearing will be held on November 16, 2016, at 9:00 AM, in Room 900, Boston City Hall, in connection with a petition for the approval of the Third Amendment to the Master Plan for Planned Development Area No. 69, South Boston/The 100 Acres (“Third Amendment”) and the Development Plan for General Electric Headquarters Campus, South Boston, Massachusetts within Planned Development Area No. 69, South Boston/The 100 Acres (“Development Plan”), filed by the Boston Redevelopment Authority d/b/a Boston Planning and Development Agency (“BRA”). Said petitions will be heard only if approved at the BRA Board of Director’s Meeting scheduled for November 1, 2016. Said Third Amendment would allow for certain changes in the Master Plan’s Illustrative Plan, Use Plan, Open Space Plan, Rights-of-Way Plan and Buildout Plan. Said Development Plan consists of approximately 388,070 gross square feet, and includes the rehabilitation of the Brick Buildings including the connection of the Brick Buildings by a shared atrium/lobby; the construction of a new approximately 293,300 square foot, 12story building that will be connected to the Brick Buildings by a pedestrian bridge and GE Plaza, a new pedestrian walkway open to the public that will run from Necco Street to the Fort Point Channel; and the construction of public realm improvements, including approximately 61,490 square feet of outdoor public space, an enhanced Harborwalk, green space, interpretive signage and amenities.
