Murphy Rink Now Open

by Rick Winterson Last Friday, October 13, South Boston’s Murphy Memorial Rink opened its doors for an inspection tour, prior to its opening for skaters early this week. Despite the date, it was not an unlucky day for South Boston. On the contrary, it was exactly the opposite.

Basically, an informal committee of four people from our State Legislature and from the Department of Conservation & Resources (the DCR) conducted the walk-through.

They viewed and inspected the new and novel characteristics of the Murphy Rink, which are quite interesting from a scientific and engineering standpoint. The four individuals were: State Sen. Linda Dorcena Forry, State Rep. Nick Collins, DCR Deputy Commissioner of Operations Nick Gove, and the DCR Director of Government & Legislative Affairs Sean Pierce. Other staff people, from both the DCR and the Murphy Rink itself, were on hand to guide the inspection and answer any questions.

The actual opening of the Memorial Murphy Rink took place last Monday evening, when younger athletes aged five and six became the first skaters to use the brand new ice surface. The hours that the Rink is open will initially extend from 5 until 9 p.m. Later on, as the demand for skating times and hockey practices firms up and becomes clearer, the Murphy Rink’s hours will be extended from 3 until 11:30 p.m. Check with the Rink’s staff on this matter.

All four members of the informal inspection quartet expressed their satisfaction with the newly refurbished Murphy Memorial Rink. The project cost a total of $5 million. The brand new, high efficiency compressor (a Bitzer screw model) cost $1.2 million (installed cost) by itself. It is both functional, and in its way, quite beautiful. The Freon refrigerant is “ozone layer friendly”; complete heat reclamation and re-use is accomplished by warm side condensation.

Police Update – October, 2017

by Rick Winterson The local police news from Station C-6 has been encouraging lately. The summer is over, schools have reopened, and the weather is becoming wetter and cooler. And just so you know, the area covered by Station C-6 now includes South Bay, Harbor/Columbia Point, part of the Newmarket/ Southampton district, and the rapidly developing South Boston Waterfront.

Violent crime in South Boston is still decreasing. While there is an occasional tragic event, such crimes have actually become unusual around here – once in a while there’s a death, a serious fight, or a case of domestic violence. The police at Station C-6 aim to prevent every form of violence, of course, but good progress is being made.

One type of crime that is still a problem is larceny, especially stealing goods from cars (not stealing the automobile itself). Do not leave your automobile unlocked at any time – a thief may decide to open your car door, just to look around. And don’t leave ANY bags or objects in the passenger compartment of your car. Lock them in the trunk. A thief will break into an automobile just to see if there’s anything in an empty bag you’ve left on the floor. Your insurance will cover the cost broken glass, but what

a pain in the neck that is! Prevention is the way to reduce property crimes.

And as always, the local police strongly encourage you to call 9-1-1 whenever you see something that appears even slightly suspicious. You are not bothering the police – you are being a public-spirited citizen when you use 9-1-1. Just do it – that’s important, very important.

And then there’s begging (a.k.a. “stemming”, to use the vernacular).

Lately, beggars have become much more common on the streets of South Boston. They are in Andrew Square, at the Broadway “T” Station, and as far into South Boston as the intersection of K Street and East Broadway.

South Boston Online wants to make something completely clear: Begging in the City of Boston is NOT illegal. Furthermore, beggars have a right to use benches, sidewalks, and other public areas, just like all the rest of us. However, beggars are not entitled to use the streets (especially the yellow line in the middle) to ask for money from auto passengers at an intersection. Obviously, that can be very dangerous. The police have requested that you ignore beggars who approach you when you are in your car You may choose to be compassionate when a beggar asks for money. That’s your privilege. It’s a

free country and you’re a kind person if you give a beggar some “spare change”. However, recognize that beggar will return the next day, and might encourage other beggars to join him, so they can “make a score”, too.

What do beggars do with the money they get from begging? Many carry cardboard signs that claim they need something to eat or a place to stay that night. Well, the City has assured South Boston Online that lodging and hot meals are available to anyone who needs them. Many of those cardboard signs are not truthful – the beggars carrying them won’t be using your money for food or shelter.

Did you know that beggars at busy intersections can make between $100 and $200 (or more) a day? You’ll

see them in small groups, each of them taking turns in the street. Many of them are busy with scratch tickets they have bought. One of them has a pet dog in a baby carriage. And unfortunately, some of the beggars seem to be substance abusers. They don’t need your money. They need professional help!

Please don’t think that South Boston Online lacks compassion. But we are sure, if beggars have a good day in a certain place, even more of them will be back the next day on the same corner.

Instead, consider donating your “spare change” to the many fine charitable organizations in Boston, which provide free food and shelter to those in need.

Or you can simply offer to buy a beggar a cup of coffee and a doughnut, instead of giving him your money.

Trick-or-Treat on Broadway

The South Boston Chamber of Commerce members, South Boston Neighborhood Development Corporation and many local participating businesses invite the neighborhood children in costumes to “Trick or Treat along East and West Broadway” on Tuesday, October 31, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Participating establishments will be clearly marked with an orange and black poster inviting the children to stop in for a treat.

The South Boston Chamber of Commerce – now collaborating with the South Boston NDC will once again be hosting this years annual event that allows families to stroll safely along East and West Broadway for a fun and enjoyable Halloween.

Even the arched Quonset roof in the Murphy Rink is now energy efficient. The surface area of that roof is close to an acre – approximately 40,000 square feet. You can imagine the huge amount of heat from the outside that could leak through it, especially during the daytime, if the roof had not been carefully upgraded.

An interior layer, called a “Low E Ceiling” (reflective foil insulation) is in place – you can see it from inside the Rink. It is estimated to save about 20% of the energy used in refrigerating the Rink’s ice-covered surface below.

Stop in for a visit the next time you’re near the Murphy Rink.

You’ll be impressed.

BCYF Condon/Tynan YOUTH VS BPD C-6

Last week at the BCYF Tynan Gym the Boston Police C-6 Community Service Dept. Headed up by Sgt. Mike Mylett and Captain Boyle along with officers from the special units across the city came to play our kids in a game of basketball.it was a great game, lots of laughs and the competition was fearsome at times. The police won this battle but our kids are preparing for a rematch soon. After the game we had pizza and some informal dialogue. A great time was had by all and we are scheduling more events like this one in the near future! Collaborative Comedy Night: Friday, November 1, in Florian Hall

he Comedy Night, sponsored by the Joseph “Dodo” Nee South Boston Collaborative Center, has become a South Boston tradition. This will be the tenth time it has been, well, a “time” – a true South Boston “time” to raise funds, to enjoy music along with two immensely funny comedians, and to honor a hard-working son of South Boston - Nick Collins, South Boston’s State Representative (4th Suffolk District), who’s now in his third term.

On the personal side, Nick graduated from Boston Latin and received a degree in Business Management from Babson. He has been in public service from the beginning of his career; he lives in South Boston with his wife, Olivia Liff, MD. Nick is active in community affairs, such as charter schools, campaigns for fellow Democrats, and last year’s Evacuation Day celebration.

Among his professional accomplishments, Nick spearheaded the Police Department’s

Rep. Collins Leads Effort in House to Restore BFD, South Boston Non-Profit Funding

Secures and Restores over $2.75 Million in Local Funding

Earlier this year, State Representative Nick Collins joined his colleagues in the Massachusetts Legislature to shape a compromise budget between the House and Senate that included funds for South Boston programs. The spending plan also reaffirmed a commitment to education local aid, substance abuse treatment, developmental services, and children and families statewide. Following a pattern of recent budget uncertainties, gubernatorial vetoes affected many important programs in the neighborhood, but Representative Collins was able to restore and secure these funds in the House of Representatives through months of advocacy.

“It takes strong advocacy

in the Legislature to deliver for our community, especially when there is a budget deficit,” said Rep. Nick Collins. “I am committed to continue working with my colleagues to secure funding that ensures a high quality of life in our city and in our neighborhood, and I am proud that we got it done again this year.”

Each budget cycle since he was first elected, Rep. Collins has worked with his colleagues to increase funding for a wide range of programs, including family services, substance abuse programs, youth development initiatives, public safety resources, and job training. In recent years of fiscal uncertainty, there has been a pattern of gubernatorial vetoes. This year the fourth term legislator was able to secure and restore funding for the Boston Fire Department, South Boston Health Center, South Boston Neighborhood House, Camp Harbor View, The

Gavin Foundation, The Laboure Center, Julies Family Learning, The South Boston Collaborative, South Boston en Accion, and the JFK Library Foundation.

He emphasized the need for the “Friendship” Fundraiser in an interview on Tuesday. He spoke of how the Condon Center’s membership has grown – by 20% or more. Specific program needs include girls’ athletics like basketball that can lead to college scholarships.

Now he runs the show. He wants everyone who ever was part of Condon Center activities to show up at PubliCo on November 1. Both Mark and Joe spoke bluntly – funds are needed to maintain programs for the increased memberships at Condon. Period.

And both Mark and Joe promise you a real old-fashioned, Southie neighborhood “time” on November 1, which will be held in a new and exciting neighborhood bistro called “PubliCo”. Tynan Happenings CHILDREN’S HALLOWEEN PARTY The Tynan Community Center Council, Inc., Annual Halloween Party will be held on Friday, October 27th at 3:30 pm. The Crown Princess Docks

by Rick Winterson The Grand-cruise class ship, the Crown Princess, which is just over 900 feet long and can transport more than 3,000 passengers along with a crew of 1,200, docked at the Reserved Channel’s Black Falcon Terminal in Flynn Marine Park last weekend (OCT 14-15). This view of the Crown Princess is from the small, unnamed park area across the Reserved Channel from the Black Falcon, and next to the Summer Street Bridge. This follows upon the prior weekend (OCT 07-08), when three cruise ships were docked at the Terminal.

As evidence of the Boston area’s popularity, were you aware that there have been times during October when absolutely no (yes, NONE!) rental cars were available around here? Part of the reason was the onset of the Leaf Peeping Season north of here. The other part of the reason is the popularity of Boston as a port of call for passenger liners. When 3,000 tourists arrive in Boston looking for transportation, you can bet that our transport systems will become stretched to the breaking point.

But tourists are welcome here. Hospitality in all its forms (including tourism), along with finance, medicine, education, and high-tech, is among the City of Boston’s key industries. So the next time you get the chance, take a tourist out to lunch – here in South Boston, of course.

The Joseph “Dodo” Nee Foundation’s “Time”

It was quite an event – truly memorable. The occasion was the first fundraiser for the Joseph “Dodo” Nee Foundation. The best way to describe the event is to call it a celebration – a celebration of Dodo Nee’s life. He was South Boston born-and-brought-up, a Marine veteran, a Boston firefighter for 28 years, and a participant in countless community activities right up until the day he died earlier this year.

But most memorable of all were his roles as a family man and a friend of everyone he met. Hundreds showed up for the first fundraiser in support of the Joseph “Dodo” Nee Foundation last Friday evening at Florian Hall, the home of Boston Firefighters’ Local 718. That by itself symbolized his long service as a Boston firefighter.

His extended family performed all the arrangements, both for the party and for the golf tournament that

preceded it last Friday morning. Friends of Dodo’s who took part included Dru Errico (the evening’s Disc Jockey), Cranberry Café’s Cathe Walsh (oceans of coffee), and the band (the Linehans – Bill (vocals, guitar), Jack (drums), Rich (guitar) – along with Leo Stapleton (guitar), Kenny Morrell (keyboard), and Ted O’Brien (harmonica, guitar).

The band’s rendering of Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold” early in the evening seemed to symbolize Dodo’s life’s works.

Perhaps the most attractive feature of Nee Foundation fundraiser was the many valuable and desirable auction items. Wide screen TVs (5), gift certificates galore, trips and weekends away, impressive (and autographed) sports memorabilia. and too many others to list, or even attempt to count. A good evening was had by all It was a great Southie “time”.

You should have been there.

Don’t miss it in 2018.

HUB Week AIGA Forum on Design: Baffle Me Good

By Richard Campbell We were reminded as the automated fire alarms in John Hancock Tower kept interrupting the speakers throughout the beginning of the Changing Boston Designscape series of Hub Week (sponsored by AIGA, American Institute of Graphic Artists) that two virtues every good designer needs: patience and a sense of humor. This was in inordinately complex forum in some ways because the panel members were from very different backgrounds, and the definition of design here spanned everything from user experience design, to systems design in biomedical fields, marketing design- to civic design for the city of Boston.

What do any of these things have in common? They all need designers who work on how to fix problems in order to improve the way that design impacts our world.

Unlike the more practical workshops and events planned for the AIGA Conference happening concurrently with Hub Week, this forum was more of a description of the personal journeys of four designers in the fast changing design landscape of Boston.

One might have been given the impression that the talk would have been specifically about how Boston designs things, or how design influences Boston. Well, not quite. The moderator, Chris Bransfield, of Woods Creative, moved the dialogue around well enough, but there were times when the functional aspects of design were sublimated to organizational issues on an almost abstract level. The divergence of kinds of designers did not make his job as easy as one might think, but some of the meta-communication here was more valued on his part than actual questions.

In the case of Nigel Jacobs, by virtue of his role as a New Urban Mechanic, (a group of problem solvers named by mayor Menino and were kept on with Mayor Walsh) offered the most concrete examples of solving design problems in our city. Design in his case is more like combining

He clearly admitted he isn’t a designer to the audience but someone who utilizes them- or jokingly “steals from them”, getting chuckles from the audience. Influenced by the design thinking of Tim Brown, he is focused on the lived experience in the city. To meet demands of citizens through city planning, he noted, involves removing political barriers. Welcome to Boston!

At any rate, if you are a garden variety graphic geek like myself: we’re not in Kansas anymore.

Neeta Goplani, the head of Experience Design at John Hancock /Manu Life fit the prototype of an analytical person who is a creative who seems to have an intrinsic ability to manage people and systems to satisfy customer outcomes, and leverage design to make data function with more transparency for the insurance world. Her understanding of core technologies from a career path of being an information architect, user interface and experience designer, allowed her to see how people are motivated to work within them to support the business ethos of her company. She came equipped with a flashy ad video of her CEO tethered to the top of a building. She explained that her collaborative approach for design changed from a waterfall method, where the process got passed on from team to team, and now happens simultaneously in Agile

project management software.

She noted that differences of opinion from hers were respected and desired. I got the feeling that she is the kind of gifted person who expects creative thinking, but understands how to genuinely motivate others with humility.

Lesley Mottla, SVP Product, Customer Experience and Engineering at M. Gemi, a startup shoe company, I thought was going to fill in the product design gap, but she was also more of a customer experience guru with an emphasis, upon building experiences online. Her candid remarks about the nature of selecting staff for start-ups that can be flexible brought some levity to the forum. She emphasized really finding out what the consumer wants, by living with their ideas about the product to discover why people have particular preferences to create holistic design solutions. Getting down to brass tacks of how the consumer thinks to formulate a strategy put her design work more in the realm of marketing research and design. She believes that now company CEO’s understand the nature and need to design things to work for humans.

Juhan Sonin, the Creative Director at Go Invo a software design company that specializes in creating solutions for personalized medicine through design and engineering gave the immediate impression as being a lightning rod personality reminiscent of Steve Jobs or

Mitch Kapor in the original fertile computer revolutions. His heady fields of medicine, genetics, and future capabilities led his cogent comments to test the boundaries of science and design. He knew how to turn typical questions into serious ideas about how we could fix our troubled world. Things like reasonably reliable national voting machines came up, and he suggested with disgust that our rights are being trampled by the inefficiency of the government (bringing resounding applause).

His comment that designers have become too complacent with success, were as refreshing as those he made on coming revolutions in genetic engineering. He was using the time in the session to challenge himself as well as the audience.

It didn’t hurt that his Sugar Kills T-shirt was a great graphic design. I looked his company up and sure enough, he had worked at Apple, MIT, and the National Center for Supercomputing.

From a Hub Week perspective this was the forum type of experience that was focused upon working complexity of people using analytical skills and technology for design solutions.

Now that it is over, and we are certain that good design may be the only thing to rescue us from climate change, crumbling infrastructure, lack of health insurance, outdated city planning and fraudulent elections- I can go back to designing fun, creating logos and collateral for print like the good old days.
