Sharp Spike in Auto Larcenies

by Rick Winterson Each month, South Boston Online attends a community information meeting at our local Police Station C-6. The group that attends this meeting is called the Neighborhood Advisory Council (the NAC).

The NAC’s purpose is to ensure that information f lows and enforcement actions by Station C-6 fit the neighborhoods’ needs as well as possible. All of the major neighborhoods that Station C-6 is responsible for are represented on the NAC; the most recent NAC Meeting took place on Wednesday evening, October 3.

Key subjects that came up included the ongoing opioid crisis and the traffic control efforts resulting from the recent traffic tragedies. Station C-6 Captain Joseph Boyle then described the major increase in larcenies from motor vehicles in

and around South Boston this summer – 315 so far, which is a 68% increase (!!!) over the same time last year. NOTE: “Motor Vehicle Larcenies” are thefts of property or money from empty, unattended vehicles, not thefts of the vehicles themselves.

In a subsequent meeting with BPD Sgt. Stephen McNeil, the Supervisor of Station C-6 Community Services Office, he provided detailed information about the vehicle larceny problem, which he obtained from the Boston Regional Intelligence Center. The police estimate that five out of six (84%) motor vehicle larcenies are committed on unlocked vehicles. If you are out and about in South Boston, you may catch sight of individuals walking quickly along lines of parked cars, trying the door handles to see if any are unlocked.

Larceny into the passenger compartments to see if anything valuable is on the seats, the dashboard, or the floor deck. The message is obvious – lock your car every time you leave it (even for just a minute or so) and secure everything possible in your trunk (completely out of sight).

There is a pattern here.

Last year, in 2017, there was a vehicle larceny hotspot in Back Bay. Later on, that trended toward the Boston Medical Center. Soon after that, in the spring of 2018, motor vehicle larcenies began to increase in South Boston, especially around Andrew Square and along the First Street corridor. Most of these larcenies – six out of ten, 62% - take place after dark; one in eight larcenies are on vehicles parked for 24 hours or longer.

Mayor Conducts Press Roundtable on Ocean Flooding

by Rick Winterson Yesterday, Mayor Walsh gave an important speech to Greater Boston’s Chamber of Commerce.

His speech dealt with sea level rise, the f looding we’ve already experienced, and the Cit y’s proposed remedies. On Tuesday evening, he conducted a Press Roundtable that briefed Boston’s news media on the same topic.

In and around South Boston this year, f looding has occurred a long Morrissey Boulevard, in the Seaport/Fort Point Districts, and on our beaches.

It resulted from a combination of storms coupled with high tides. It was also caused (in part) by the worldwide rise in sea levels, due to global warming.

The Mayor’s propose plan

includes extensive diking and seawa lls a ll around Boston Harbor. According to him, this plan will involve, “planning for the storms the next generation will face.” He also pointed out that the City of Boston’s plan is currently a “first step”.

Detailed design, engineering, and funding sources will follow.

The Eversource Reliability Project

by Rick Winterson Eversource, the electrical power provider for South Boston (as well as for much of Northeast Dorchester) has made preliminary plans for an underground electric transmission line that will be just over two miles long. It will traverse public rights-ofway between the site of the Andrew Square Substation and the site of the Dewar Street Substation (Savin Hill).

There are two related reasons for doing this. At the moment, the new transmission line will increase the reliability of electric power distribution in the extended neighborhoods around those two sites. At present, the Andrew Square Substation provides power to the west, into the South End west towards Coplet Square, in a fan-shaped region. The Dewar Street Substation handles a similar neighborhood.

Interconnecting the two substations will increase reliability when disruptions occur. In addition, since these neighborhoods are rapidly developing, the new line is an investment for increased power consumption some years in the future.

An initial public meeting was held in South Boston’s St. Monica Church Hall last Wednesday, October 10; an identical meeting for Dorchester patrons took place on Thursday, the 11th, in the Teachers Union Hall on Mt, Vernon Street.

For major new power projects, the Commonwealth requires that a firm regulatory permitting procedure be followed – “by the book”, so to speak.

These two public meetings were the start of this process. Anyone can take

part in the permitting exercise – you can submit your own comments on this project, or become a so-called “intervenor” or “limited participant” in such a process. Bring up “EFSB in Massachusetts” or “Electric Facility Siting Board” for more information.

The entire permitting process will be complete by early 2020, about 18 months from now. A total of seven permits are required – four from Massachusetts, three from Boston (the construction will be entirely within the City). After holding a preconstruction Open House, Eversource aims to break ground during the second quarter of 2020, when good outdoor weather begins. Construction is expected to be complete in about twenty-one (21) months – late in 2021, after which date the new transmission line will be put into service.

This will be a 115,000 Volt transmission line – higher voltage transmission lines are more energy efficient ways to transport electric power. As mentioned, it will be 2.1 miles long and entirely underground.

It will traverse the distance mostly along what is called the “Morrissey Boulevard corridor”. About one-third of the transmission line will lie in South Boston. From Andrew Square, it will angle to Kosciusko Circle along Old Colony/Columbia near the western edge of Moakley Field. It will clear South Boston, pass near the Circle, and then go down Morrissey Boulevard. The line will connect up on Dewar Street, after going through Savin Hill (OTB) and crossing under the Southeast Expressway.

Walter Isaacson Describes Genius at Faneuil Hall

Encapsulating the geniuses that Walter Isaacson wrote about in his famous biographies on Ben Franklin, Albert Einstein, Steve Jobs and Leonardo Da Vinci, in a brief hour and a half presentation, Isaacson showed unusual pluck in describing the difference between smart people and the special qualities of genius. On the historic stage of Faneuil Hall, Isaacson was introduced by Linda Henry, the Managing Director of the Boston Globe and one of the co-founders of Hub Week, who acknowledged that the author gave early guidance to the project. The author reiterated that he felt that Boston was the perfect place for Hub Week with its stated goal to marry the sciences and humanities.

Genius, which is an entirely overused word in America these days, is basically described by Isaacson as being a special brand of creativity that is consumed with an insatiable curiosity of the world around us, and the ability to make sense of human’s relationship to it with unique, complex solutions. But the author went further to delineate states and qualities that make these fascinating persons who have shaped our world in so many miraculous ways. Isaacson showed how genius sees the world differently from

the rest of us- from the highly technical to the everyday. A striking example he mentioned was the observation of the sky. He made it clear that it is one thing to recognize the sky is blue, and quite another to try devise the reasons for it- a quality that Da Vinci, Franklin, and Einstein all shared. It was entirely fitting that he mentioned that many geniuses stand out for this uniquenessseeing beyond the everyday to define complexities in the way the world works.

While the author spent the most time on Da Vinci, he didn’t fail to tie together- perhaps too neatly- Franklin, Einstein and Jobs as people who imagined in full creative

visions. The well know tropes about Einstein imagining himself riding along side a beam of light leading to his discovery of special relativity, Ben Franklin’s notion of electrical force and his clever kite flying proof, and Steve Job’s obsession that technology be aesthetically suited and perfectly modeled for human interactions, were drawn out. It was duly noted that Franklin preferred Philadelphia for its diversity from the more parochial Boston, that Steve Jobs had an outsized ego that refused to compromise, and that Einstein was rebellious in his youth always undermining authority.

Because the Da Vinci book is the most recent work he spent the majority of the time on this subject’s genius.

To perceive the complex beauty of the world and to recreate it for others with great detail, and thereby to change the world forever for generations to come are marks of genius that Isaacson mentioned as well. Here the author’s detailed description of the influence of the works of Roman architect Vitruvius and the notes on the page of Da Vinci’s famous illustration of the Vitruvian Man, (which was the Renaissance reinterpretation of the original), are familiar to students of the arts. For while famous artist friends of Leonardo produced similar reproductions of the man “squaring the circle” Isaacson assures us it is DaVinci’s that we remember today- not merely for its “meticulousness” but because the surety of his lines. While Vitruvius had meant his man to symbolize a map for the architecture of temples (the man

spread eagle being analogous to an ideal aerial floor plan) it is said DaVinci’s picture touches the relationship of man to his world and universe.

Isaacson also cleared something up which many people have wondered, about the extent to which this image is a self-portrait of the master himself.

He quotes Toby Lester’s eloquent statement on this fairly accepted theory and mentions that the image does appear to be drawn from a mirror. In his book, Isaacson says: “Leonardo’s Vitruvian Man embodies a moment when art and science combined to allow mortal minds to probe timeless questions about who we are and how we fit into the grand order of the universe.”

Along the way Isaacson revealed little gems about the life of Da Vinci: that he was an orphan; that his first job at age nineteen was welding a “two-ton ball” on the top of Brunelleschi’s dome in Florence; how his involvement in science and engineering projects kept him from painting, to descriptions of Florence, and many observations on human anatomy. From describing how human lips work to the depiction of the elusive Mona Lisa’s smile, to the nature of perspective, light and space in The Last Supper; the lecture had a kind of magic show fluidity.

There was something iconic about the screens revealing Da Vinci’s works aside the stayed portraits of colonialists.

Perhaps with the exception of Franklin and a few others, the views of the people in that time period would hardly be analogous to the worldly aspirations and visions of the Renaissance. At the same time, the age of enlightenment that influenced the American revolution echoed the speaker’s discussion. In an ahistorical world in which the American Revolution is now often depicted as merely a greedy land grab and a chance to promote slavery, Isaacson’s fullness of knowledge of history and human nature is inspiring. This short celebration of the foundations of the classical world illuminated in the Renaissance with its magnificent connections between art, science and the humanities made an appropriate near end to the 2018 Boston Hub Week.

Autumn Service Day is a family-friendly event that will bring the community together to do meaningful work supporting those in need.

The day will include hands-on service activities, food, and live music while learning the importance of community service. Participants will learn how volunteering can create a ripple effect on communities, in turn, creating positive change for populations in need. Volunteers are encouraged to bring high demand food items that will be donated to Food Bank 4 U, a food bank for students at Bridgewater State University. Seaport Sculptures Bring Iconic Brightness to Boulevards

By Richard Campbell The Spanish Pop Surrealist Okuda San Miguel has landed his brightly colored mythical creature sculptures on the Seaport Boulevard, lending a

playful quality to what is essentially a highway through the Seaport. His larger than life sized geometrically formed sculptures face forward on the boulevard, beckoning more to drivers than to the pedestrian passer-by. The identity of the mythical figures is encased with an architectural sense of sculpture. They are the perfect anecdote to break up the seemingly neverending sequence of blue glass boxes.

Looking somewhat like computer generated art, they are often cryptically named. In contrast to the native growth on the medians, these shiny sculptures will draw the eyes and add a notion of modernity to the new Seaport that fits its unstated desire to eventually become a more walkable, adventure filled part of the city. One can see influences from Dali, Picasso, Gaudi, and other Spanish artists, along with a kind of ubiquitous

international color palette that has a bit of a corporate feel to it. His work was also on display at Hub Week, painted on the sides of big containers, which echoes his larger wall murals in churches and buildings in Spain and the Swiss Alps.

A resident of Madrid, Spain, the artist took a BA from Complutense University of Madrid, and his street works can be seen around the world: India, Mali, Mozambique, the United States, Japan, Chile, Brazil, Peru, South Africa, Mexico and Europe. He appears to be at great ease working in multiple

mediums and has that fashionable flair for which Spanish artists are renown. To see a comprehensive website of his work, go to: .

It must be said that the common sculptural works and murals are a little less edgy than some of his photography and video which tries a little bit too hard to be controversial. It must be duly noted that the work he has done for Boston is suitably restrained. It is a welcome addition on the Seaport to see some sculpture that doesn’t look like bug zapping screens or boring abstractions.

Vets Deserve Our Gratitude, Honor

Captain USN Thomas Kelley, Distinguished Service to Veterans Award and honored for conspicuous gallantry in the line of combat

By Ray Flynn, Former Mayor of Boston and Former U.S. ambassador to the Vatican The New England Center and Home for Veterans in downtown Boston, founded in 1989, has become one of our nation’s leading private community-based providers of human services — including medical care, shelter and job training — for veterans experiencing challenges following their military service. Recently, a great crowd of patriotic supporters turned out for the annual Leave No One Behind Gala at the Seaport World Trade Center, to express their support for homeless and needy veterans.

My friend Capt. Thomas G. Kelley, USN Medal of Honor recipient, was

presented the center’s Distinguished Service to Veterans Award and honored for conspicuous gallantry in the line of combat. The gala also marked the 100th anniversary of Veterans Day and the end of World War I on Nov. 11, 1918.

Talking to a group of business people and concerned citizens at the reception, we were reminded of the early opposition to this shelter that we received when we decided go ahead with the homeless facility in the heart of downtown Boston. We were told that crime and drug abuse would go up and drive businesses out of downtown. That homeless veterans from surrounding towns who need help would likely flock to Boston. “Mayor, I remember you saying at a meeting at City Hall that ‘no homeless person will go without a warm bed, a hot meal, medical care or job training as long as I am mayor.’

We all thought that was a promise that couldn’t be kept, but it became a reality.

I’ll tell you why it became a reality, I said, because there were a lot of people in Boston who felt that the country owed a debt of gratitude to all those men and women who courageously defended our country in the U.S. military in a time of danger and need.

Also, I’ve learned that there are a lot of people who are willing to volunteer their time, energy and resources to help people down on their luck. I personally witnessed the kindness of people in my own community, church and schools many times growing up. They may not openly talk about it, but you can

always count on them in a time of need.

Just then, Tom Lyons, a leading veteran in Massachusetts, walked over to us and I said to the group, “Tom is a great example of the kind of person I am referring to. He served our country in the U.S. Marines in Vietnam and then came home to work hard for America’s values in helping needy veterans. I saw this every day for almost 10 years as mayor at City Hall watching people

like Veterans Commissioner Tom Matarazzo,” Tom Lyons and Gene Vaillancourt, right up to the present day with Commissioner Giselle Sterling, in standing up for all our veterans.

In ending our constructive conversation, I said, “It’s people like Tom Kelley and Tom Lyons along with so many of all our veterans who continue to make our country great.”

Mini Maker Faire at Children’s

by Rick Winterson Likely you’ve heard of the so-called “Makers Movement”, and a movement it really is. The Makers first grew from clusters of curious and creative people in the Bay area around San Francisco/ San Jose in the 1990s. The exact, original location could be in San Mateo, midway between San Francisco and San Jose, where the 13th Annual “Maker Faire” took place recently. Other Maker Faires (40 of them this year) are taking place worldwide – New York,

Tokyo, Berlin, Paris, Rome, and so on.

Certainly, Boston deserves to have a Maker Faire, and the Children’s Museum in South Boston’s Fort Point neighborhood obliged (Saturday/ Sunday, October 6-7). In fact, this was the Museum’s third annual Faire, only they’ve chosen to call it the “Boston Mini Maker Faire” because it is specifically for children. Some 100+ exhibitors, performers, and guides took part. Children’s Museum organized and hosted this event under license from Maker Media, Inc. It is difficult to convey the 2018 Boston Mini Maker Faire in just one article, even with a few photographs.

Each of the three floors in Children’s was packed with Maker displays. Four tents outside the building and a performance space were set up around the trademark Milk Bottle and along the Fort Point Channel. And of course there were kids as far as the eye could see. These kids were enthralled with everything – the Museum’s Maker Mini Faire was “showand-tell” on a truly ginormous (!!!) scale.

In all of this, what do Makers,

well, really make? This year, robotics was emphasized, ranging from a greeting robot at the doorway to the exhibit, through R2D2 and 3CPO, to a fully robotic tabletop bowling alley called “GECKO Bowling”. Robotic weavers vied for your attention with wheeled robots that followed visitors around, while nudging their feet. A high school senior named Curran Dillis demonstrated a robotic hand he designed that’s visibly better than the commercial version.

And it’s not only high-tech on display, or the usual craft work. Fine

dresses from recycled matter like trash bags, striking track toys for endless hours of play, and exercising devices that are fun to use are just a few examples.

Furthermore, Makers do everything, like cooking in the Museum kitchen, playing music (often improvised, as with JP Honk), and creating works of art. And it’s all playful. To get an idea of the Mini Maker Faire, just remember the word “STEAM” for: S – Science, T –Technology, E – Engineering, A – Art, M – Math (or Music).

SBCA K2 News The Kindergarten students at South Boston Catholic Academy have been learning all about apples at school and were able to visit a working fruit orchard. They went apple picking at Honey Pot Hill Orchards in Stow, Massachusetts, on the first field trip of the school year. The children picked delicious Macintosh apples, enjoyed yummy apple cider donuts, and tasted sweet apple cider. Everyone loved visiting cute farm animals, a hayride, and a picnic lunch with friends. “Hidden Treasures” a Success

You never know what value might be stashed away in your attic. How many times have you heard about discoveries worth a lot of money that were unexpectedly brought to light? The Laboure Center’s “Hidden Treasures” gathering last Saturday proved just that. An eye-catching, highly interesting assortment of artifacts was brought for a “Hidden Treasures” appraisal by professionals from Skinner, Inc. (head office in Marlborough; main gallery here in Boston at Park Plaza).

The buzz at the “Hidden Treasures” fundraiser was constant for the entire five hours, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Toys, models, and antique furnishings, along with many works of arts and crafts, kept the two appraisers busy. There was a feeling of excitement and anticipation and sure enough, some few of the artifacts brought into the Laboure Center were deemed by the appraisers to have significant value.

And a reminder: the 2018 Laboure Christmas House Tours will take place in just six short weeks – Saturday/Sunday, December 1 and 2.

BCYF Tynan Happenings Celtics Shamrock Foundation Tip Off Gala

On Thursday, October 11th, four BCYF-Tynan Community Center youth were fortunate enough to participate with the Boston Celtics players, at their Annual Celtics Tip off Gala at the Westin Hotel. Brayden Buckley, Gigi Rouf, Meghan Harrison, and James Buzell were able to meet the Celtics players and were show cased on stage with them. A couple of the youth were overcome with emotion, as they stood proudly side by side with their heroes. It was an exciting night for the youngsters, who were fortunate to be part of this special event. It will be an experience they will never forget. GO CELTICS!!!

Friday Night Hoops

The BCYF Tynan played host to our friends from the BCYF Blackstone community center from the South End. The teens played hard and had lots of fun and when the buzzer went off the teens sat around and got to know each over pizza thanks to the Tynan council. The kids had lots in common, as they talked video games, sports and attended some of the same high schools. This is how friendships began and now the bcyf tynan kids want to go over to the Blackstone and check out their center. Special thanks to Al Smith, Youth Worker for setting this night up.

Youth Flag Football League

The Flag Football League for boys and girls 7-11 will begin clinics and forming teams this Tuesday, October 23rd @ 3:30 pm. There are still slots available for any boy or girl interested. League games will officially begin on Tuesday, November6th. Contact Greg for any questions or further information.

Adult Coed Volleyball

Our 2018-19 season will kick off on Thursday, November 1s. We will have practice and meeting times set up on Thursday October 18th and 25th. League fees will be due by November 15th. No cash will be accepted. We can take Money Orders or Checks. If anyone is interested in playing on a team contact Kathy asap. There are some slots opened on a few teams.

Red Sox Game The BCYF Tynan Community Center teens, along with youth worker, Katie O’Connell, and Athletic Director, Greg Lally, had the privilege of attending the Boston Red Sox vs. Baltimore Orioles game on Wednesday, September 26th. A great time was had by all, especially considering it was a beautiful 75 degree night. We also ran into a familiar face, our old Athletic Director, Officer Robbie Walton. The teens loved seeing him at America’s Most Beloved Ballpark. GO SOX!!!!
