Third Annual Boston Hub Week Kicks Off

By Richard Campbell

With each year Boston’s Hub Week seems to expand, as a gargantuan festival celebrating the intersection of arts, science, and ideas, there are multiple organizations at different locations sponsoring events in the Boston metro area. The festival runs from October 10-14 with day and night events targeted to specific audiences. Participants who want to go the full Monty might attend the cornerstone event: The Ideas Festival Future Forum featuring internationally known figures like Juliette Kayyem, Deepak Chopra, Malcom Gladwell, John Kerry, and others. Because it is such a large festival, it is wise to cherry pick a few specific events, like seeing presentations of over business 100 startups in one shot, or attending 175 other mini events held in discreet locations around the greater Boston area.

First timers often get their feet at the block parties, but most of the serious events at Hub Week have dedicated audiences. Attendees and participants come from around the world to create and see this growing festival, which has big sponsorship coming from the major universities, medical centers, arts and civic organizations, and businesses in Boston. At the time of press some of the more advanced geek events are already sold out, (that is almost anything to do with Robots or coding) but there is plenty left to see in both free and paid for events. At the Hub week website: https://hubweek.org/events/ you can see all the listed by category. So, let’s say you are interested in development, you might attend the Oct. 10th speaker’s forum on how Boston Landing, the new home of the Celtics, Bruins, and New Balance was created, at the Continued on Page 5

Generous Donations in Memory of Joe “Dodo” Nee

The SBNH started off the school year with a very generous donation from the Boston Police Department, Boston Fire Department, Boston Firefighter’s Credit Union and Mass Fallen Heroes, in memory of Joe ‘Dodo’ Nee. This donation provided back to school supplies for 30 Ollie families! We made an afternoon of it and a group of staff took the kids and some of their parents over to Target, Old Navy and Famous Footwear. Families shopped for their uniforms, sneakers, back packs, lunch boxes and whatever else the Ollie kids needed to have a fun and successful school year. Mayor Marty Walsh, Police Commissioner Evans and the Nee Family were at the Ollie for the presentation of the check and said a few words about Joe “Dodo” Nee and what he meant to them and to the South Boston Community. Dodo’s legacy continues!
