This event took place outside Gate of Heaven Church downstairs in the I Street Courtyard, in St. Josephs Courtyard, down by the large Celtic Cross.

Father Tom Olson, our Parochial Vicar, was glad to see everyone and to say a special prayer and Bless all the wonderful pets and their families who came to this parish event at Gate of Heaven Church.

How We’re Creating More Affordable Housing

Boston is going through a period of historic growth- the kind our city hasn’t seen in decades. More people are choosing to put down roots and start families here. More businesses are choosing to open their doors here. Students from all over the world come to attend our universities and colleges each year. As Boston grows, we must keep our focus on the families and communities that make our our city the diverse, welcoming and world-class place it is. To do that, residents must be able to afford to live here in the city they love, families must be able to grow, and young people must

be able to make our city their home.

To achieve that, we’re working hard to increase Boston’s affordable housing stock -- that includes building housing across a range of incomes, and focusing on ensuring there are income-restricted homes being built throughout Boston.

Just last month, we increased our overall housing goals from creating 53,000 units to 69,000 units by 2030 to meet Boston’s growing population and increase the number of housing opportunities available to residents. These new housing goals, which were first set in 2014 through our housing plan, build on our commitment to increasing

NAESP honors Massachusetts school leader during National Principals Month Craig Martin is among 62 outstanding elementary and middle school principals from across the nation and abroad who have been named as 2018 National Distinguished Principals (NDP) by the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP). Martin is principal of Michael J. Perkins School in South Boston, Massachusetts. The NDPs will be honored Oct. 12 at an awards banquet at the Capital Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C., as part of a two-day program.

Established in 1984, the National Distinguished Principals program recognizes public and private school principals who

make superior contributions to their schools and communities.

The principals will also have the opportunity to share best practices.

The 62 principal honorees are selected by NAESP state affiliates and by committees representing private and overseas schools.

NAESP Executive Director Dr. L. Earl Franks, CAE, congratulated the class of outstanding principals, noting their significant influence on the students, schools, and communities they serve. “Today’s principals are tasked with attending to students’ social and emotional needs at greater levels, even while they give their all to drive academic success in their school communities. NAESP’s National Distinguished Principals program recognizes the outstanding leadership of highly successful principals and is a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to outstanding school leaders.”

It is particularly fitting to acknowledge the work of principals in October because it is National Principals Month, which was established to recognize and honor the contributions of school principals and assistant principals toward the success of the nation’s students, and encourage awareness of their significance.

Together, the 15 members of the Metro Mayors Coalition announced a target to create 185,000 new units of housing across the region by the year 2030.

We are at a pivotal time in Greater Boston as our economy continues to grow and thrive, and more people

move to our communities. I know housing is the number one concern for so many families in Boston, and addressing it is my top priority. Of the 69,000 new units that will be created by 2030, 15,820 of them will be income restricted. By 2030, the total number of income-restricted housing units in Boston will be nearly 70,000. We are also committed to acquiring 1,000 market-rate rental units from the housing market and making them income restricted units.

Out with summer; in with Halloween. It’s not what we all want, perhaps. It’s just the New England calendar at work. And nowadays, Halloween really does begin the Holiday Season in South Boston.

Be aware (and wary) that 34th Annual “Children’s Magical Halloween Castle” takes place on Saturday and Sunday, October 27 and 28, from 12 noon until four. It’s all free – refreshments, entertainment, and Halloween thrills beyond compare. Come in costume, BUT PLEASE NOTE: Children MUST be accompanied by an adult.

A Challenge to Feed South Boston’s Hungry

leaming new buildings are springing up like mushrooms all over South Boston, along with upscale restaurants and trendy boutiques. In this atmosphere of plenty it’s hard to imagine that there are more than a few people in the neighborhood who are hurting and hungry. But hurting and hungry they are.

Ten years ago, Dr. Nisha Thakrar, pediatrician and Chief Medical Officer at South Boston Community Health Center approached the CEO, Bill Halpin, with a concern. She had patients who weren’t making it to the end of the month with their food supply. She had several moms who had to make the choice to forgo a meal so their children could eat.

Halpin and Susan LaPaglia, the Director of Administrative Services spearheaded a food drive. The health center staff responded generously by filling an entire room with canned goods and pasta, beans and soup, surely enough to last for months they thought. Within two weeks it was gone.

Such was the beginning of the South Boston Community Health Center’s Food Pantry for their patients.

In the past two years, the pantry distributed over 86,000 pounds of food to nearly 1600 individuals including adults, seniors and children.

The pantry is open two days a week for a total of 8 hours. There are no lines and families are treated with dignity,

Arthur wanted his donation to come as a challenge to other individuals and businesses to get involved and heed the call to feed the hungry.

Neil Fitzpatrick of Boston Freight Terminals (another world class good guy and longtime supporter) heard about Arthur’s challenge and matched his $5000 donation to the food pantry.

If you’re reading this and have the ability to make a difference - big or small - consider yourself challenged to help! We can’t all make a $5000 donation, but we can all make a difference. respect and discretion. Lapaglia has since taken on the additional role of Pantry Director. She and health center staff take the trip to the Greater Boston Food Bank once a week to load up food and when there is a greater need, the health center supplements the food with purchases from local supermarkets and other venues.

Partners HealthCare, Project Bread and Boston Medical Center have helped with funding as have other private sources, including Foodies Market who donates the Thanksgiving turkeys every year and Massport, who conducts a Thanksgiving food drive with their employees.

On the pantry’s 10th anniversary, plans are underway to move it to a new, ground level space at the health center and expand the hours of operation so even more hungry patients can

be fed. In honor of this milestone, Arthur Murphy of Murphy, Hesse, Toomey and Lehane, (a world class good guy and dedicated supporter of the health center) donated $5000 to help to defray the cost of running the food pantry. But more than that,

The Ribbon Is Cut. EpiCenter Expansion Opens!

ast Wednesday morning, October 3, Artists for Humanity cut the ribbon on its 30,000 square foot expansion.

For several years now, Artists for Humanity has occupied its clean-lined building at the intersection of A and Second Streets. This building opened in 2004.

It is called “The EpiCenter”, a word that means the point on the earth’s surface directly above an earthquake. The EpiCenter has served thousands of young artists, who have generated a true “earthquake” of creativity in Boston since then.

Led by Susan Rodgerson, its Founding Executive/Artistic Director, Artists for Humanity began working with young artists in 1993, using donated space in the old Boston Wharf warehouses along A Street. When Boston Wharf sold their properties, Artists for Humanity moved to lofts on Summer Street until their move into the EpiCenter in 2004.

So in a way, 2018 is the 25th Anniversary of Artists for Humanity, during this year of so many other anniversaries in South Boston. It is entirely fitting that the opening of the EpiCemter’s expansion took place when it did.

This will allow Susan and her staff – many of them original art students from the early days of Artists for Humanity – to teach and develop0 as many as 500 young artists and craft workers each year (the present EpiCenter had room for 250 or so).

Unfortunately, Susan had to miss last week’s ribbon-cutting for urgent family reasons. In his opening remarks, Jason Talbot, Special Projects Director, said the ceremony typifies Artists for Humanity’s growth in the community. He then introduced Mayor Walsh, who reflected back on his experience with the group, which has steadfastly dedicated time, efforts, and resources to developing the skills and careers

David Long, the Chair and CEO of Liberty Mutual Insurance – a key supporter of Artists for Humanity – then spoke. He defined Artist for Humanity as “a place for young people” that “positions them for success”. Lauren Liss is the President and CEO of MassDevelopment. She spoke of their long-term relationship with Artists for Humanity, stating that all (yes, 100%) of their graduates complete high school and go on to advanced educations. In her remarks, Kara Buckley, Head of Communications at Procter & Gamble/Gillette, mentioned that the expansion sits on a P&G lot they donated five years ago – “It is now a reality”, she exclaimed.

Andrew Motta, the Director of Operations at Artists for Humanity, called for those who were to cut the ribbon to step forward. Scissors were issued, the participants lined up, and on the signal, the silver ribbons were well and truly cut. It was a memorable South Boston event, followed by refreshments and fellowship.

For your information, the three-story EpiCenter expansion (30,000 square feet) will include a mezzanine art gallery, a photo studio, a woodworking shop, a metal fab shop, a printing area, a graphic design studio (including video/ animation), and a much-expanded painting studio. All for the good of young, adolescent artists in Boston.

JFK Library “Celebrate” Series Features Mariachi

I

nstead of being couch potatoes on Columbus Day some smart families headed off to enjoy the first of the John F. Kennedy Library Celebrate Series. The concert featured Veronica Robles high spirited Mexican Mariachi Band blending music, dance and culture with an interactive twist. As a part of Boston’s city-wide celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, this performance was designed to get kids moving.

From her Aztec God appearance to the closing song Ms. Robles kept the little urchins dancing and singing away in bliss- all the while learning about the culture of the Americas.

Robles is that rare bird: a female Mariachi performer with educational skills and wise cracking humor wrapped in a golden heart, who knows how to charm an audience. Extend those skills to include exceptional vocal ability and add the brilliant ensemble led by her husband, Willy

Lopez and you’ve got a performance worthy of the hall at the JFK. Besides being down right fun, there is a slightly hidden message about universal compassion- the teaching of kindness with a light touch.

Veronica credits her grandmother who taught her traditional songs while cooking in the kitchen, which stoked her love

of music and led to her discovery of Mariachi in Mexico City’s Plaza Garibaldi, where she learned the craft from veterans at an early age.

In many respects her journey to New York City in 1992 to showcase her professional skills as a mariachi singer brought her through the towns and cities of Mexico and Latin America, flavoring her work with distinction and authenticity.

There are performers who sing the same songs, and other Mariachi bands in our midst, but you will be hard pressed to find one so spirited and inventive as Ms. Robles.

When she brings the kids into the performance and allows them the opportunity to perform in costume, her generosity of spirit reveals a clever educator. For the kids, it is just fun.

The John F. Kennedy Library and Museum Celebrate series includes a succession of free kid friendly culturally inspired concerts, dance performances, and puppet shows from October through April of 2019. New Worship Site in the Works at St Vincent’s

St. Vincent’s church is not being sold.

Welcome changes are in store for the community of St. Vincent de Paul parish. Plans for a new worship site on the parish grounds are close to being finalized.

This is not new information to members of St. Vincent’s parish who regularly attend the Masses being held at St. Peter Lithuanian, Castle Cove or the Senior Center.

But it may surprise others who have not been in regular communication with the parish community.

For nearly three years, parishioners of St. Vincent de Paul have been temporarily worshipping at St. Peter Lithuanian parish.

In October 2015, St. Vincent’s parish had to be closed after debris continued to fall from the church’s ceiling. Following

the installation of safety nets hanging from the beams to catch huge pieces of plaster, structural engineers determined the building was unsafe. The grand church was condemned and a team of structural engineers and risk management analysts determined the structural repairs to the church would cost in excess of $10 million.

No doubt, these three years have been heartbreaking for members of the St. V i n c e n t ’s c o m m u n i t y.

The Vincent de Paul community worships at St. Peter’s parish every Saturday at 5 pm, and Sunday at 9 am.

While Sunday Mass is the focus of nourishment and meaning in the lives of Catholics, it will certainly mean a great deal to the people of St. Vincent’s to have their own worship space again.

Occupation of Boston – 250 Years Ago This Month

by Rick Winterson Two and a half centuries ago – 250 years back, in 1768 – Lt. Col. William Dalrymple arrived from Nova Scotia to occupy Boston, per his orders from the King of England, George III. His ship arrived on Friday evening, September 30; his 2,000 red-coated troops disembarked at noon on Saturday, October 1, 1768, exactly 250 years and 10 days ago today, as you are reading this.

The British units comprised the 14th and 29th regiments, along with a detachment from the 59th and a train of artillery (two cannons).

After forming up on Long Wharf, Dalrymple’s regiments marched to Boston Common in what Paul Revere called “insolent parade”, words he used on an engraving he had created.

Over the next 24 hours, Dalrymple publicly read the King’s proclamation about taxes and demanded quarters for his soldiers. The British soldiers encamped, thus forcing the colonial militia off of the Common. Redcoat guards interrupted a church service at the South Church on Sunday morning.

This occupation by arrogant redcoats, 250 years ago, began paving the way for our War of Independence eight years later in 1776.

Last weekend’s re-enactment was very colorful and extremely well done. The British military units, who performed to perfection, are made up of history buffs from America. Their uniforms and gear are authentic; their demeanor was something to see. The “Thin Red Line” marched from Long Wharf to the Old State House. After a 30-minute pause

while the Republic of China (Taiwan) Parade passed, they then marched up Washington Street for Col. Dalrymple’s proclamation at Franklin Street. The re-enactors encamped on the northwest corner of the Boston Common. Drills and parades took place there; Sunday morning saw conflicts in downtown Boston.

The re-enactment opens a multiyear program called “Revolution 250”.

It is a program by the Massachusetts Historical Society made up of approximately 50 organizations from across the State of Massachusetts, and which is overseen by a volunteer advisory committee. Revolution 250 plans extensive historical happenings between now and eight years from now.

South Boston resident Bob Allison is a Professor of History at Suffolk University. When the “Insolent Parade” paused at Franklin and Washington Streets miniamphitheater last Saturday, Bob spoke of the Revolution 250 plans.

Over the next eight years, Boston will observe and celebrate notable historic happenings from 250 years ago, such as the Boston Massacre in 2020 and the Boston Tea Party in 2023. This will climax at the 250th Anniversary of our independence on Saturday, July 4, 2026.

Stay tuned for the best history lessons you and your family will ever receive. After all, the original events all happened right here in the City of Boston. And remember: the 400th Anniversary of the City of Boston’s birth (1630) is just four years later, in 2030. Much has been planned for that Anniversary already.

4th Annual Boston Hub Week: “We the Future!”

ounded in 2014 by Harvard, MIT, MGH, and The Boston Globe, the annual Hub Week now sporting many new sponsors, materialized on City Hall Plaza Monday October the 8th this past week. The showcase runs through the 14th and is comprised of over 200 events. This year’s theme is “We the Future”, which seems as much about cultural innovations as future crisis points mitigated by technologies. Hub Week brings smart people from around the world to showcase innovations in technology, medicine, education, humanities and the arts. While there are really only three full days of forums-Wednesday through Friday- the week includes satellite experiences all around Boston.

Home base on City Hall Plaza is where select environments, staged experiences and amenities create a small village. With attendees from 46 states, 59 countries, and 38 industries charted around the city, you will find planning critical. Trust me: this is not your grandfather’s science fair.

Big Money Or Freebie Option...

For the hefty ticket price of $700.00 there is the Concierge Pass with all the perks, though the Insider Pass for $200.00 seems like something for those in the more middle-income range. Don’t sweat it if that price is too rich for your blood, as there are plenty of things to see for FREE if you obtain a GA General Admission pass. Students and Startups qualify for 50% off passes, and there were early bird discounts.

But let’s not kid ourselves, unless the boss is paying for it, Hub Week is well beyond most purse strings of people wishing to be merely entertained. If you are planning on launching a complex start-up, it is worth every penny.

Of course, when one is talking about reserve front row seats to a lecture

by Walter Isaacson the author of the best-selling biographies on Steve Jobs, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Benjamin Franklin; or Penny Heaton CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Research Institute, you sort of expect to shell

out some cash. Local luminaries from the MIT Media Lab, such as Rosalind Picard, and Neri Oxman give the forums that extra technical gravitas.

Perhaps young people’s preference will be to hear David Hogg, from March for Our Lives, or Chana Sacks from Mass General’s Gun Violence Prevention Program. There are attempts to envision a more peaceful, harmonious world that bridges the inequality between poor and wealthy nations. A recurring theme is how individuals can reach out to the larger world and find purpose in life.

Big sponsor events like MIT’s Hackathon will draw the computer geeks but I had to attend the Aerial Drones workshop at District Hall in the Seaport hosted by Swissnex.

Called “Aerial Futures: The Drone Frontier”, this was a combination drone demonstration and forum that included about 25 organizations primarily from Switzerland and the US, focused upon the 20 billiondollar drone industry. In what seemed like an unlimited clash of ideas from aerial pollination, to virtual piloting technologies, data collection, energy harvesting, aerial mapping, machine learning, and wind tunnel technologyone afternoon at this Hub Station is a mind-boggling Geek Heaven.

The Broad Institute never fails to shock you with the next revelation in genetics, and dutifully presented “CRISPR: From Lab to Clinic” on Tuesday Night. But don’t worry, they haven’t gotten to the stage of walk in appointments for gene editing. Many commercial sponsors gave generously in creative ways. Blue Cross / Blue Shield has a booth entirely dedicated to prosthetics and body technology to overcome disabilities; Toyota has their Mirai Experience and Liberty Mutual presented the Information Zone. The Crystal Cave and other arts exhibits round out the learning experience with some fun, as well as nightly parties on City Hall Plaza lit up like an airport hangar. Besides music and art performances there are featured movies and podcasts. Warning. Your brain may rapidly expand during Hub Week, but one night of TV sports or network news can bring it back down to reality.

Cleverly Polished: “Sherlock’s Last Case”

By Richard Campbell This past week “Sherlock’s Last Case” opened at the Huntington Theatre main stage with a tight cast and high production values to bolster a script laden with verbal hijinks and very British humor. While a little subtler than Monty Python, there is a decidedly campy strategy behind this amalgam of familiar Sherlockian scenarios, but good taste does not allow me to reveal the central conceit of the play. Suffice it to say this rendering by Charles Marowitz turns the traditional Holmes adventures inside out via a clever psychological ploy- creating a parody that usurps all the accepted conventions of the time.

The direction by Maria Aitken is near the polish of the best productions ever at the Huntington.

Refined to a degree and yet still hurriedly pushing the envelope to score comic points, this witty confection pleases on multiple levels.

Through a series of convoluted plot twists the irony in this play does rely upon a certain knowledge of the original stories, as well as the relationship between Holmes and Watson. Many of the jokes are made for a British audience, but the preview saw most of this American

Rufus Collins as Holmes has the over the top ego that is necessary to show him as the master of all things, even in his most perilous situations. He plays the part somewhat like a vaudevillian actor, bending our ears with clever nuances and vociferous declarations, his pliable face readying for the punch lines, and dispensing intellectualized mockery upon his subjects. Mark Zeisler really comes alive in the second act as Doctor Watson, whereas in the first act he is

more akin to a Butler than his usual confident self. His unleashing is at once cathartic and funny in a way that serves his role reversal well, and he is able to suspend our disbelief just long enough to prepare the audience for the improbable Deus ex Machina.

Jane Ridley is the photo perfect Mrs. Hudson with her empathetic notions, and faux pas, who plays the audience through the map of her face. In the fluidity of her accents, she has moments of

scene sharing that keeps the comedy moving when the verbosity of the script thickens. Antoinette Robinson has one of the more difficult roles in trying to relate the confused back story as Liza (the presumed child of Dr. Moriarty), who comes to ensnare Holmes with her quick wit.

She pulls the complications off with verve and sensuality that lights up the stage. One might mistakenly think that it’s merely the way she moves in the magnificent blue dress design by Fabio Toblini that creates the wonder, until her sparkling voice entrances the audience.

The yeoman-like acting of British actor Malcolm Ingram as Inspector Lestrade pulls out the cockney boast, barrel chested bumbling, and dumb-founded surprise pretty effectively. With a plot that is increasingly mind bending, this cast knows how to have fun and make it look easy.

Two More Murals Grace Our Town

Murals are perhaps the oldest known human art. Cave paintings at Lascaux in southwestern France go back more than 15,000 years, and there are hints of some other murals that could be dated as far back as 30,000 years. So, it’s no surprise that mural art exists in a town with the long traditions of South Boston.

In June, 2017, South Boston Online published an article about the murals of South Boston. At that time, there were eight of them, in locations that ranged from our shores, through the projects to Andrew Square, and on to several points on and near Broiadway. Do you know where these eight works of art are located? They’re all still there.

South Boston Online is pleased to record that we now have two new murals. One of them (on the No Man’s Land wall behind Excel High) we’ll call “home”; the other (at L and East Broadway) is from “stone balancer art”. “home” is by John Provenzano
