by Rick Winterson Shane Hoban stopped in at the South Boston Online office Monday afternoon. It was a highly informative visit he paid us, so we’ll ask for your understanding if we get to the pitch right away – right up front, that is. You see, Shane is running in the 2016 Boston Firefighters Local 718 10K Memorial Road Race, which takes place on Sunday morning, October 16. This race memorializes members of the Boston Fire Department and of Local 718, who gave their lives while performing their duties as firefighters. The event celebrates those lives, while raising funds for many local charities. Log onto that popular crowdfunding page GoFundMe.com. Then go to A Cure For Fred and make your donation. Shane is not

He has garnered $2,000 already, which he has slated for a donation in support of research that will defeat cancer in children – specifically, the well-known charity, Cops for Kids with Cancer, who grace our St. Patrick’s Day Parade every year. As Shane raises more and more, he plans to expand his donations to include Dana-Farber. So who is Fred? He’s Fred Perrone, Shane’s 70-year-old maternal grandfather. He has contracted an especially serious form of cancer, and is undergoing intensive treatment at Dana-Farber right now. Fred is an unusual man. He is a teacher, a shop teacher with years of experience and devoted shop class mentoring in Brockton’s East Junior High and Holbrook High. Fred has spent his life working with children, while becoming a master craftsman himself in many fields. And please remember that Shane Hoban’s fundraising is in Continued on Page 3

Learnin’ 2 Swim at Condon

The “Learn to Swim” Class was splishin’ and splashin’ with instructor Miss Mary Devlin and sporting the coolest T’s in town. The “Learn to Swim” Class is for girls and boys ages 3+ and runs for 6 weeks on Tuesdays & Thursdays, 6pm. The next session begins in early November.
