You see, Shane is running in the 2016 Boston Firefighters Local 718 10K Memorial Road Race, which takes place on Sunday morning, October 16. This race memorializes members of the Boston Fire Department and of Local 718, who gave their lives while performing their duties as firefighters. The event celebrates those lives, while raising funds for many local charities.

He has garnered $2,000 already, which he has slated for a donation in support of research that will defeat cancer in children – specifically, the well-known charity, Cops for Kids with Cancer, who grace our St. Patrick’s Day Parade every year. As Shane raises more and more, he plans to expand his donations to include Dana-Farber.

So who is Fred? He’s Fred Perrone, Shane’s 70-year-old maternal grandfather. He has contracted an especially serious form of cancer, and is undergoing intensive treatment at Dana-Farber right now.

Fred is an unusual man. He is a teacher, a shop teacher with years of experience and devoted shop class mentoring in Brockton’s East Junior High and Holbrook High.

Fred has spent his life working with children, while becoming a master craftsman himself in many fields. And please remember that Shane Hoban’s fundraising is in Continued on Page 3

Celebrating Columbus the Discoverer Adventurous Italian explorer from the Republic of Genoa discovered the America’s thereby changing the history of the world.

By Kevin Devlin On October 12, 1492, Christopher Columbus and his crew on the now-famous ships, the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria, landed in the Americas.

The Old World had stumbled upon the New World and a new age of exploration was about to unfold on the world stage.

Columbus was born in the Republic of Genoa (Italy), the son of a weaver. His first trip into the Atlantic Ocean almost cost him his life. The commercial vessel he was sailing on was burned by French privateers and he was forced to swim ashore to Portugal. Undaunted by this setback he continued his voyages on the high seas.

With Muslim domination of the trade routes throughout the Middle East a dangerous hindrance for Europeans, Columbus was hoping to find a safer route to China and India. He

thought he could travel west across the Atlantic and reach this destination. In 1486, Columbus presented his plan to the Portuguese king and then to those in power in Genoa and Venice. He was rejected. He subsequently appealed to the Spanish monarchy, Queen Isabella of Castille and Ferdinand of Aragon. Skeptical, they initially shied away, but in January of 1492, when the Spanish army captured the last Muslim stronghold in Granada, they agreed to finance his expedition.

In August of 1492, his three ships left Spain. While traveling west across the Atlantic Ocean in search of his dream, Columbus didn’t realize the America’s stood in his path. Afterwards, he would be known as the explorer who changed the world.

Shane, along with his girlfriend Kimberley White, have already raced in the Boston Police’s Emerald Society 5K in Roslindale in September. They will both participate in the upcoming Local 718 10K ten days from now. A 10K race - just over six miles – is a grueling run. This one starts at Florian Hall on Hallett Street in Dorchester. Despite its length, it is fast, flat, and very scenic. It circles around Dorchester Bay and the Neponset River’s estuary. There’ll be prizes, of course, and other entertainment, so make a day of it, if you want.

You’ll be interested to know

that Shane has many South Boston connections, including his own current residence on K Street near Marine Road. The Hoban family has many members from and in South Boston. His paternal grandfather Roger Hoban played football for the Southie Wildcats. His dad was a BFD Lieutenant at the D Street stationhouse for a while.

Shane Hoban says he keeps his spirits up by racing in his Grandfather Fred’s name, and Fred himself draws strength from what Shane is doing. You see, Grandfather Fred once did Shane an enormous service.

Racing allows Shane to “put back” in Fred’s name. It’s a win-win for him, whether or not he wins the 10K race.

Weighing the College Decision

This is the season when many high school seniors, and their parents, will make a most important decision—picking a college or university that is the right fit academically, financially, and socially. As chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Boston and a father of college students, I know that finding academic excellence, an inviting community, and an appropriate price point are critical elements in the decision-making process.

I’m proud that UMass Boston has established itself as a studentcentered, urban public research university that welcomes and supports students of all backgrounds by providing them with an excellent education and modest tuition and fees. We take pride in fostering a community of diversity and inclusion, and continue to be the most diverse university in New England, even as we have grown from 1,227 students at our founding to17,000 today.

As our student population has increased, so have the opportunities we provide, with approximately 200 academic programs to choose from in 11 schools and colleges. Our students pursue degrees in biology, psychology, management, exercise and health sciences, nursing, engineering, and many other fields. STEM Week Immersion Kicks off at Perry School

by Rick Winterson STEM Week, just announced this Monday, is a very important news item in our opinion, so South Boston Online will take a few of your minutes to define a few terms and procedures. Perhaps the key term is “STEM”. STEM is an acronym – an abbreviation standing for Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics – S, T, E, M. These are the realms of learning where logic, numbers, and experimentation become important.

STEM Week goes from Monday, October 3, until Friday, October 7. Some 6,500 students will take part; they are in Grades 6, 7, and 8 from 36 of Boston’s middle schools. One of these schools is the Perry School in South Boston. Stem Week is actually an “immersion program”, which means that students will forgo their regular classes for all five STEM Week days.

Instead, these students will plunge themselves into investigations, experiments, and collaborations with other students.

They will do, ask, react, create, design, have fun, hatch ideas,

Shown above is the southeasterly corner of the I and East Eighth intersection, which has been essentially empty for 20 years or so. That particular corner has been touted as a good spot to relocate A Street’s popular My Diner, known for its three-egg breakfasts and its “vertical” roast turkey.

Neighborhood opinion on My Diner going there is split. But there’s a remaining question: Where will Williams’s Tavern, with its license to serve, end up going?

Rep. Collins Recognized Last week, State Representative Nick Collins was recognized for his record on environmental issues by the Environmental League of Massachusetts (ELM) for achieving an excellent score on legislative action and energy policy.

“I am honored to be recognized for our work in the Legislature on environmental issues,” said Rep. Collins. “Environmental considerations are particularly important in South Boston, a community close to an active cruise terminal and an active maritime shipping terminal. We are also custodians of large state parks as well as protected state tidelands which surround our peninsula. These important considerations play a crucial role in shaping my work on Beacon Hill.”

Among his many legislative initiatives, Rep. Collins has filed legislation supporting climate change preparedness in Massachusetts and has pushed to minimize emissions and pollution from the Flynn Cruiseport in South Boston

through the use of shore power.

“When it came to votes this session, Representative Collins supported a pro-environment agenda, but didn’t stop there. Rep. Collins demonstrated a commitment to conservation. The ELM is pleased to recognize him as an environmental champion,” said ELM President George Bachrach. “We look forward to continued work together to protect our environment, improve public health, enhance quality of life, and grow our green economy.”

In tallying its legislative scorecard, the ELM awarded points to lawmakers who led by supporting or sponsoring important legislation and deducted points from legislators who filed anti-environment legislation.

“Legislative scorecards are common but this is unique, measuring leadership, not just votes,” said Bachrach.

“This is our best effort to give voters a sense of who is really on their side in the critically important work that takes place out of public view.”

Capo Hosts Julie’s Fundraiser

by Rick Winterson Last Thursday, September 29, Capo – one of South Boston’s newest dining establishments – opened its doors and its fireplaced back area to Julie’s Family Learning Program.

The occasion was one of Julie’s key fundraisers; South Boston showed its always generous heart, when an overflow of hundreds showed up.

Julie’s Family Learning Program (“Julie’s”) is named for St. Julie Billiart – founder of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur and canonized in 1969 by Pope Paul VI. Julie’s mission is family support, a wellness and education program that develops strong families. Specifically, Julie’s provides services to poor, at-risk mothers and their children that transforms their lives.

Julie’s served two hundred (200) such

families during the full year of 2015.

Bob Monahan, Julie’s Executive Director, and Carrie Coughlin, the Director of Development, expressed their gratitude and satisfaction at the turnout, which was frequently shoulder to shoulder as the evening progressed. A shout-out goes to Capo for providing an elegant space in front of their fireplace at the rear, along with a sumptuous, non-stop buffet that was a real hit. This combined very well with a joyful, celebratory spirit, which turned Julie’s fundraising event into a real “Southie time”.

The splendid raised fireplace at Capo was an attractive and popular gathering spot for many of the guests at Julie’s Family Learning Program fundraiser.

SB Artists Emplace Tir na nOg in the Fenway

by Rick Winterson On a flat meadow overlooking the Muddy River’s lagoon, as it courses through the Fenway, Tir na nOg was created, given life, dedicated, and ceremonially opened on Thursday afternoon, September 15.

Tir na nOg is Gaelic for the mythical “Otherworld of Youth”. It is the joint creation of South Boston’s Michael Dowling, who founded and is the Artistic Director of Medicine Wheel, and Caoimhghin O’ Fraithile, a native of Ireland. His name – Gaelic, of course – is pronounced “Quee-veen Oh Fray-HaLa”. Both Michael and Queeveen are world-renowned installation artists.

The sponsoring organization for these installations is Medicine Wheel Productions, in partnership with the Fenway Alliance’s “Public by Design” Initiative. It commemorates two historic phenomena: specifically, the Centennial of the Easter Uprising of 1916 and more generally, the Irish emigration to America from famine times till the end of Ireland’s Civil War. Note that Michael and Queeveen each created on his own work of art separately.

Michael’s “Well House” is based upon a 1200-yearold container for relics entitled the “Emly Shrine”, which is now at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts. The silver decorative work, in fascinating early Celtic patterns, symbolizes light. There’s an ever-gushing water fountain in a side chamber of the “Well House” – both a tribute and remembrance of Michael’s grandmother, who oversaw Brigid’s well and who continued to dispense

blessed water here in America. The fountain, by the way is run by solar panels, thus closing the circle formed by water and light in Irish lore.

Queeveen, who stayed at The Paraclete and built his artwork there, calls his installation “South of Hy-Brasil”.

Hy-Brasil is a mythical land to the West of Ireland that appears every seven years. This work, among many others, is supported by “Culture Ireland” as part of its 2016 Centenary Programme. Its use of thatching and knotted cotton cloth is traditional in Ireland. If you would like to see more of Queeveen’s work, the Boston Public Library has his drawings and sketchbooks on display in the Norman B. Leventhal Map Center through the end of October.

Boston has the highest percentage of Irish-descended residents in the U.S. and is the only American city hosting Irish Centenary Art. Furthermore, 2016 is the hundredth year of the National Park System, of which the Fenway is a part. And both “Tir na nOg” and “Hy-Brasil” are mythical lands in Irish folklore that are believed to be to the West. Is it too much to consider these names as metaphors for America, where so many Irish folk came a hundred or more years back?

In any case, the outdoor unveiling of “Well House” and “South of Hy-Brasil”, the two works making up “Tir na nOg”, was a joyful event at the Fenway by the Muddy River’s placid lagoon. Take a walk by there in back of the Museum of Fine Arts when you get a chance.

Did you know about the Port of Boston modernization?

Every year, the Port of Boston contributes $4.6 billion to the region’s economy, generating more than $300 million in Federal, state and local tax revenue, and supporting 50,000 total jobs. Massport’s Conley Container Terminal processed a record number of containers for the last two years.

As a result of the Panama Canal expansion, Boston and other east coast ports must accommodate larger container ships that are the new standard in the industry. The facts are: • These “big ships” carry 8,000 -13,000 containers • The bigger ships are already here. Conley Terminal is now serving – with operational restrictions – 8,500 TEU sized vessels

• Container business and jobs at Conley will be in jeopardy if Boston is not able to effectively and efficiently handle the bigger ships • Work in the Port of Boston will be lost to other port cities which are already making their ports “big ship” ready

Massport, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and state government are investing in modernizing the Port of Boston in order to compete in the 21st Century by: • Dredging the Harbor, including constructing a CAD (Confined Aquatic Disposal) Cell to dispose of soil from the harbor bottom • Planning and permitting the construction of one new berth to accommodate “big ships” and revitalizing two other berths at Conley Terminal • Making plans to add new cranes to load and unload the bigger and wider container ships • Building a secure, dedicated freight corridor to take 400-500 trucks off of East First Street

This school located on D Street in South Boston is “… an innovative school serving students who reflect the rich diversity of Boston.” The mission of the Condon is to “…help all students acquire the skills, knowledge and habits they need to reach proficiency and to succeed in high school, college, and a life of active citizenship in the neighborhoods of Boston and beyond.” The administration strives to achieve this mission through a tough academic program, which is designed for a wide range of learners, encompassing a comprehensive approach centered upon the social and emotional needs of the children, by exposing them to the enriching fields of music, art, dance and swim.

After school they enjoy their brief journey to the South Boston Boys and Girls Club which is located on West Sixth Street, a healthy stone’s throw away from the school. At the Club, these four youngsters like going to the gym to play hoop, flag football, and floor hockey. They

The Condon-Club Connection In his free time, Aidan loves watching TV and then playing in the local playground at the Town Field Park in Dorchester. He also enjoys playing video games. In the sports arena, he plays floor hockey at the Club.

If he was our chief executive living in the White House, he said that he’d “clean up the environment so we could all be healthy” and would try to “end world hunger.”

Paul McGrath, 11, a fifth grader, is the son of Paul and Ashley. He has a sister named Isabella and Lena, a brother named Caleb, and a dog named Lola. His favorite subject is math and someday he hopes on being a lawyer. Paul’s favorite color is ultra-blue and he loves eating his dad’s chicken broccoli and ziti. His favorite professional athletes are Odell Beckham Jr., a wide receiver for the New York Giants, and Stephen Curry, star guard of the Golden State Warriors. And, his favorite TV show is “SpongeBob SquarePants” which first aired in 1999.

In the world of sports, Paul has played in the South Boston Youth Soccer League for three years. “I like playing soccer,” he said. “I like to score and play sports with my friends.” He also enjoys playing floor hockey and flag football at the Club. During his leisure time, he likes watching TV as well as playing the games of Tag and Manhunt outside with his pals. If Paul was the President of the United States, he said that he would, “Tear down the wall that Trump said he’d build if he ever does.”

Aidan Collins, 11, a sixth grader, is the son of Patricia and John. He has two brothers, Shane and Brian, a cat named Sneezy and a dog named Brady. His favorite subject is math and someday he plans on being a scientist so he can make amazing discoveries.

Aidan’s favorite color is red and his favorite food is boneless Buffalo wings with plenty of sauce. His favorite professional athletes are Patriots beloved quarterback, Tom Brady and former WWE star, John Cena.

Daniel Ostiguy, 11, also a sixth grader, is the son of Daniel and Frances. He has a younger sister named Jordyn. He has two parakeets named Becky and Blue, a cat named Tiger, and three Geckos named Rings, Speedy, and Hoppy.

Daniel’s favorite subject is math.

Someday he hopes to serve in the United States military or be a hacker but only do good things. His favorite color is orange and his favorite food is meatloaf. His favorite professional athlete is Tom Brady and he loves watching “Drake and Josh” which first aired in 2004.

During his leisure time, Daniel enjoys watching TV, plays video games and hanging out with his sister. In sports, he likes playing floor hockey and tag football at the Club. If he was our President, he said he’d “spend money on cancer research to find a cure because my grandmother died from cancer.”

Kevin Luna-Rodriquez, 11, a sixth grader, is the son of Flor and Luis. He has two brothers, Luis and Darvin, a dog named Kendra and a parrot. His favorite subjects are math and experimental science and someday hopes to be an archeologist and make some terrific discoveries.

Kevin’s loves the color blue and his favorite foods are French fries along with mac and cheese. His favorite professional athletes are Stephen Curry and Patriots super tight end, Rob Gronkowski. In his leisure time, he watches TV and streams on YouTube. In sports, he enjoys playing hoop and flag football at the Club. If he was the President of this great country, he said that he’d “Build a time machine portal so that we could travel back in time and change the mistakes we made.”

South Boston Pop Warner – Week 5 Update It was another good weekend for the Fighting Irish.

The A Unlimited team started the day looking to keep their undefeated season going. This weekend’s opponent was undefeated Mansfield. South Boston’s defense was too strong for Mansfield’s offense as South Boston came away with shutout.
