T
he issue on hand is the deteriorating condition of FRIDAY the Dorchester Heights SATURDAY monument, which has been closed for some SUNDAY time. Although the lawn is nice, the park is also badly in need of repairs to its stairs, and wall infrastructure. In the last deferred maintenance report for 2016, the Boston branch of NPS had deferred maintenance costs of $106,603,602, and we assume some part of that would belong to Dorchester Heights.

It must be understood that the Heights is within the same NPS Boston branch that includes the Charlestown Navy Yard, and Bunker Hill Monument- both of which have received very expensive renovations. The USS Constitution’s restoration was just completed for 12 million, and Bunker Hill was done in 2007 for 3.7 million.

Their 2017 Arts

Last Sunday afternoon, the 6th of August, Ed Hamilton celebrated his 92nd Birthday at the Foley residences, in their function room. It was quite the spread, and South Boston Online understands that the HUB Church helped with the set-up. Ed arrived shortly after noontime; the crowd immediately began to recall all his adventures. The birthday banquet included goodies like pizza, salads, chicken tenders, and sandwich makings. Most notable were the pastries, which sported a red, white, and blue theme, befitting Ed’s status as a veteran. The tables were decorated with flags as well. A good time was had by all. Happy Birthday, Ed!

by Rick Winterson If you passed along Day Boulevard by Carson Beach last Thursday afternoon, August 3, you might have noticed a large van parked on the sidewalk in front of the McCormack Bathhouse/Pavilion. This unmistakably painted vehicle is the Blum Van – formally called the “Blum Family Resource Center” from the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. The Blum Van visits various beach neighborhoods around Boston each summer. Along with Brigham Dermatology Associates, the van offers free screenings for skin cancer and its early symptoms. As mentioned in our intro
line, the Blum Van will return to South Boston’s Carson Beach once again to perform more screenings – on Monday, August 21, from 10 in the morning till 2 in the afternoon. South Boston Artists Rule at Marina Bay continued from page 1 Massachusetts. Four of these associations are located within the City of Boston. All in all, it was quite a show, held in really eye-catching surroundings. South Boston Online is pleased to report that four members of our own SBAA (the South Boston Arts Association, presided over by watercolorist Dan McCole from The Distillery) exhibited in the 2017 Arts Affair last weekend. Even more important, all four of these local talents received awards – two of those four SBAA member artists garnered two awards, for a total of six. Interestingly, the Arts Affair at Marina Bay exhibition features a section of “original” creations that are actually intentional copies of wellknown works of art rendered by the artists in the exhibition. This section is entitled “Fabulous Fakes”, and not to worry – they are plainly labeled as fakes and are sized differently than the originals. All of these Fabulous Fakes are assembled with both humor and expertise, along with great respect for

They developed the Fabulous Fakes concept and subsequent showings. The four award recipients who are members of the SBAA include Evelyn “Evie” Johnson. She received a First Prize for her watercolor “Resting” and an Honorable Mention for her Fabulous Fake of Winslow Homer’s “The Whittling Boy”. Dan McCole also received two Awards – a Third Prize for his Fabulous Fake of Norman Rockwell’s “Freedom of Speech” and an Honorable Mention for his watercolor, “Lighthouse on the Rocks”. Deb Putnam got an Honorable Mention for the striking oil painting she calls “Out of the Blue”; photographer Judith Sweeney was awarded an Honorable Mention for her excellent black-and-white capture of “Old Mill Duck Pond”. As all of us are well aware, South Boston is known for many, many good things. Not

Tony Vento – Italian Pride Awardee
You have undoubtedly heard that the annual South Boston Italian Pride celebration is coming up soon. It will take place a week from tomorrow – Friday, August 18, from 4 to 7 p.m. in Medal of Honor (M Street) Park. It’s a great family event, and an excellent way to begin a summer weekend. Everyone is invited. One of the traditions at each year’s Italian Pride celebration is the selection of a local man or woman of Italian descent, whose records of success and support of the South Boston community have been exemplary. The 2017 recipient of the “Italian Man of the Year” Award will be Tony Vento, the proprietor of Tony’s Barber Shop at 13 Boston Street, just outside of Andrew Square. A few facts and figures about Tony will demonstrate why he deserves this year’s Italian Pride Award: Tony turned 90 this year –

a hale and hearty 90 on February 1. He still puts in full days of work at his barber shop, which Tony’s father Charlie started up back in 1928, 89 years ago. Tony himself has worked there continuously – six days a week - for 78 years. Tony is a devoted family man as well. He and Mildred (Dillan), his wife of 64 years, have a son and four daughters – Tony (also a barber at Tony’s), Millie, Sharon, Andrea, and Annlouise. He’s a successful musician, too, who has done worldwide gigs – the USO, Wonderland, Bob Hope’s troupe, and the original Hi Hat at Columbus and Mass Ave. (Do you remember?). He leads still a quintet on the tenor sax, while Mildred does the vocals.
A successful and esteemed local businessman, Tony Vento, will receive the 2017 Italian Pride Award on Friday, August 18.

Unity in the Community The “Southie Supports: Unity in the Community” second annual school supplies drive is a joint collaboration among the Edgerley Family, South Boston Boys & Girls Club, the MOMS Club of South Boston, the South Boston Neighborhood House Ollie, the BCYF Condon Community Center and the Tierney Learning Center at Old Colony Housing Development. The drive will run through Friday, August 18th. Many Southie families live paycheck to paycheck and, by assisting them with the purchase of school uniforms and required supplies, we’re ensuring those families aren’t choosing between school items and other necessities in the household budget. We have a community with diverse economic backgrounds and we’re hoping those with a little more will step up to help those with a little less. We, as a society, benefit from well-edu-

Medicine Wheel Hires Kids to Fix Up No Man’s Land By Richard Campbell This past Wednesday, South Boston Online came across some students working hard to fix up “No Man’s Land”, the small park between the Dorchester Heights NPS monument and South Boston’s Excel High School, which recently has suffered from vandalism, as reported by SBO’s Rick Winterson. Gavin Castillo and Mark Martin were the first two student’s I encountered as they were watering plantings that had just been put in the ground. Kevin Sanchez and Joelin Barrows were also on hand, bringing buckets of water. All the students agreed this was the ideal summer job, and were happy to repair the damage done by others. Vandals should be aware that the neighborhood has set up an informal watch with cell phone ready citizens who will contact the police if they spot any suspicious activity up in the park. This writer has spoken with people who have witnessed kids smoking pot, and drinking on the site- which is strictly forbidden. The grotto appearance and its hidden location perhaps make people feel that they can turn the place into a private club house, and intimidate others who might wish to simply come to enjoy the natural beauty of the setting.

The site itself still needs more professional landscape architect work to be fixed completely, as there are erosion issues, and structures that need to be replaced- but this is a great start. You can see the ongoing work in a few pictures. The original landscape design is set upon a very steep incline that, even without the help of vandals, would require maintenance. The plantings look nice, but the ones I saw don’t seem to be the kind of plants that can bear the challenges of a steep incline: or the most ideal for shade conditions. Ground covers that have decent roots may help as the
shaping of the beds that are still going in, or perhaps a few more bushes. Kudos to Medicine Wheel for giving these kids a mission!

NPS Heights... continued from page 1
Still despite these expenses, we wonder why smaller repairs to the stairs on the lawn of Dorchester Heights, could not occur more expeditiously. Sources told us that work orders have been in the ready for a while, and we are contacting NPS locally to get some clarification on what it might cost to repair the stairs,and if there is a schedule for maintenance. A Ranger confirmed that extensive repairs to the monument itself would be in the millions, and that NPS would not see that happening in the immediate future. The monument was listed on the National Register of Historic places in 2001, and the site received renovations in between 1999 and 2014, but has been closed since 2012. Having the lawn stairs repaired seems kind of minor. Increased funds were allocated in 2016 for NPS Boston. To quote the NPS site: “The parks benefitted when Congress increased support in FY 2016 by providing an additional $90 million to address DM and an additional $28 million for transportation related DM, repairs, and construction. While increases like these

enable the NPS to address more of its most critical requirements, the total maintenance needs across the system are still being identified in excess of current funding levels.” This raises the issue of whether the National Parks will see an increase in repairs in 2017, and if Dorchester Heights “rates” as a park that deserves attention. The manner in which is determined is the facility condition index or FCI, to quote the NPS site. “What is the facility condition index? The facility condition index (FCI) is a measure of a facility’s relative condition at a particular point in time. The FCI rating is a ratio of the cost of repair of the asset’s deferred maintenance divided by the current replacement value for the asset. A lower FCI rating indicates better facility condition.” An interesting aspect of the preservation history of the monument on Dorchester Heights was the use of photogrammetry to monitor materials deterioration and structural problems that was completed in the 1982 NPS report. It would seem that the tower originally designed by Peabody and Stearns architects, (who also designed the Custom House Tower

Much of the damage must be to the monument’s sustained exposure to the wicked weather on the Heights, and one can see cracks on the façade. The last time I was up in the top of the monument almost ten years ago, the condition didn’t seem that severe. Dog Heaven...
The stairs are “temporarily closed” and indeed seem like a relatively in expensive repair when compared to work on the monument itself. South Boston Online will attempt to get a more detailed report on when we might see them repaired.
While the park lawn is very well groomed by NPS, another issue brought to SBO’s attention during our visit to the monument was the rash of dog owners who have been letting their pooches “run wild” without leashes. One dog owner who had her dog on a leash said that some owners don’t pay attention to their dogs running around; and especially with families with small children, this can present a problem. After visiting a few times in the morning, it seemed like a non-issue, as the owners were very respectful of the space, and stayed close by their dogs. We observed no signs telling owners dogs must be leashed, but will check with NPS further.

Another term for mid-summer is “High Summer”, which typically extends from the first full week of August till the middle of August – a brief period of occasionally hot, turbulent weather. High Summer also reminds us that summer doesn’t last forever. Autumn inevitably follows. And the first emissaries of autumn have already shown up in South Boston. As geese will, they have clustered around a small pool left behind by last week’s torrential rains. They are even exhibiting the so-called “dabbling” behavior of aquatic birds in said pool. South Boston Kids Make A Big Splash on Boston Harbor

n Friday, August 4th, 550 kids from youth development and community groups in South Boston, Braintree, Lynn, Jamaica Plain, the South End, and Dorchester joined Save the Harbor/Save the Bay for their 7th Annual Youth Beach Bash & Splash to celebrate summer and clean water on DCR’s Carson Beach in South Boston. 135 kids from South Boston, including kids from South Boston Neighborhood House and St. Peter Academy were a part of the group as they enjoyed fishing, fish printing, beach games, art on the shore, face painting and more with Save the Harbor/Save the Bay’s summer staff and storytelling pirates. At noon, the fun moved from the beach to the water, as all the kids splashed in the cool, clean water of Boston Harbor on the cleanest urban beach in the nation. “Ten years ago, this beach was closed 1 out of every 5 days in the summer,” said Bruce Berman,
Director of Strategy and Communications for Save the Harbor/ Save the Bay. “Today, thanks to all our hard work and advocacy kids and families from all over the region can count on clean water at Carson Beach, which is now safe for swimming nearly every day. After the Splash, volunteers from Goulston & Storrs hosted a cookout on the beach, and the fun continued throughout the afternoon. “There is no better way to celebrate summer and clean water than with 550 kids, 1000 hot dogs, and one big Splash” said Chris Mancini, Vice President of Operations and Programs at Save the Harbor/Save the Bay. “Thanks to our partners at the Department of Conservation and Recreation and the Greater Boston YMCAs and Boston EMS for helping to make this a safe and fun event.” “Boston Harbor, our region’s public beaches and the harbor islands are spectacular urban natural resources which belong to these kids and their communities,” said Save
the Harbor’s President Patricia A. Foley. “It is a privilege to share what we have accomplished together with the region’s kids and families through free events and programs like this.”

BCYF Tynan “Fun In The Sun” Summer Camp Senior Counselors My name is Nicole Rezza, although this is my first year at the Fun in the Sun program, I worked for the past two summers at the South Boston Neighborhood House. I just graduated from Boston Latin School where I assisted in tutoring for the past four years, and in the Fall I will be attending UMass Amherst. During the short time that I have been with Fun in the Sun, I have quickly grown to appreciate the caliber of children and counselors, who make this, camp a truly special place and look forward to working with them for many more summers. My name is Elaina Wright-McCarthy and this is my second year at Fun in the Sun. As a kid, I attended Fun in the Sun! Throughout my life I have always worked with children, whether it be babysitting, at the after school program at the Tynan, or simply tutoring kids. I graduated from Boston Green Academy, and next spring I will be graduating from UMASS Boston with my BA in English and Secondary Education and I look forward to becoming a teacher. Fun in the Sun has allowed me to find a better understanding of what I want my career to look like, and has allowed me to pursue my passion of working with children day in and day out. There truly is never a dull moment working with these kids, and they always leave with a smile on their face. The staff and campers certainly know how to have fun, and I’m proud to be part of this staff, and I’m extremely
proud to have had the opportunity to call the Tynan Community Center “home” for my entire life. My name is Jaelyn Kenneally and this is my fifth year working at the Tynan summer camp. I started off as a camper here as a child and eventually made my way up to be a camp counselor. Along with being a summer employee, I also work as an after school staff (DYEE)in the fall here at the Tynan. I recently graduated from Archbishops William’s High School and in the fall I will be attending Rivier University as a nursing major. Throughout my years I have made lifetime friends and gained qualities that I will use throughout life such as responsibility. The Tynan has had a very positive impact on me and I am certain it will continue to do the same for campers and counselors In the future. My name is Baileigh McCarthy and this is my fourth year working at the Tynan summer camp. I just graduated from Archbishop Williams High School in Braintree and will be attending the University of New Hampshire in the fall. During my years working at the Tynan over the summer, I have been setting myself up for my future, hopefully working with children. During my short time as a camp counselor I’ve learned a lot and have made friendships here with staff and campers that’ll never be forgotten. My name is Dylan Reilly and this is my third year working at the Tynan. I go to UMass Amherst and I’m studying political science. I used to play baseball and hockey so it is fun to play wiffle ball and other games with the kids. I never went to Fun in the Sun but I grew up going to the Tynan after school and playing in the gym. I like working at Fun in the Sun because the kids are great and I like working with my friends to try and set a positive example for them. The past three summer’s that I’ve worked here have been a blast. Hi my name is Matthew Prokop and this is my first year working the Fun in the Sun camp as a counselor. I was born and raised in South Boston and I have been coming to the Tynan to play basketball my whole life. I was never in the Fun in the Sun program but I did go to the Ollie camp when I was younger. I am currently going to Assumption College in Worcester and I am going to be graduating this upcoming year. I am studying human services and rehabilitation studies and I am very excited to see
what is going to unfold next year at school during my senior year. The Fun in the Sun program is a very welcoming community and the kids that go here really are great kids. The staff truly does care about the kids. My name is Jesse Miller and I am going into my fourth year working with the kids at the Fun in the Sun camp. I started out here as a junior councilor and it has been a privilege watching these kids grow throughout the years. As someone who grew up in Southie and attended camp here, it is nice to be able to reconnect with the youth of the neighborhood through sports and games. I am currently going into my senior year at Bridgewater State University and am glad to have had the experience to work as an assistant director for such a great group of kids and counselors. Hi, my name is Conor O’Toole and this is my first year working at Fun in the Sun camp at the Tynan School. I was born and raised in South Boston and have been coming up to the Tynan for years playing basketball. I have experience working at other camps in South Boston; I have worked at both the Condon Community Center and Moakley Sports Center and I enjoyed mentoring the kids during my time there. I am going into my senior year at the College of the Holy Cross where I major in Political Science and I am excited to enter the workforce shortly after. The Fun in the Sun camp is a great environment for the kids of South Boston to enjoy and I am happy to be a part of it this summer.

Fire “Emergency” Coincides with Playwright Closing Celebrations by Richard Campbell

his past Saturday evening the Boston Fire Department arrived outside the Playwright restaurant on Broadway, responding to a call about smells in the basement related to machinery, which firemen confirmed was not a fire. Though the restaurant is closing for about a month for renovations, the emergency had little effect upon the revelers inside, many of whom were there to give the place a proper send off. Name change? The Boston Restaurants blog Spot said that the new name of the restaurant will be called Boomtown. Perhaps they are playing tongue in cheek upon the local Kid’s TV show from 1956- 1974 that featured the singing cowboy Rex Trailer and his horse Gold Rush; or maybe they were thinking of the 1940 Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy movie that also stars Claudette Colbert and Hedy Lamar? More likely it’s a reference to the LA crime TV show with local legend Donnie Wahlberg. I remember when the

We were glad there was no premature boom when the fire department arrived. We can only hope that with a name like that, the over-heated stock market doesn’t quit on us before the grand re-opening!
