Entertaining Vintage Baseball: 1886 Style on Georges Island

T

he Boston Beaneaters bested the New Hampshire Granites 28-27 on Georges Island this past Saturday, in the 13th anniversary match-up between these two teams. The game was played according to 1886 rules with vintage thin gloves for pitcher and catcher, but gloveless for everyone else. Though the ball is slightly softer than a modern day hardball, bare-knuckled ball makes the game a little dicey. The rules are admittedly a little hard to determine. You’ve got to get seven balls to get a walk on, foul balls aren’t strikes, and any foul tipped ball caught is an out. The pitcher stands closer and delivers the ball according to batter preference: low ball or high ball, strike zones. It is a little confusing when

compared to modern day baseball, but that is part of the fun.

Vintage Baseball is one of the great Boston Harbor Island traditions. Given that during the 1880’s there was no landscaped baseball diamond, the open field inside Fort Warren provides the perfect space that was suitable for nostalgic purposes, and has ample shade space for impromptu dugouts, near the island’s powder house. Though the Boston Beaneaters play home games in several other locations around town, there is something real special about baseball played on Georges, which has a long history of lawn games going back to the Civil War. The Beaneaters team had origins as the Boston Red Stockings from 1871-1875, because four of its key players came from continued on page 8

Supporting Ed Flynn A Beautiful Schools Movement

B

oston is a city with great wealth, and one that is generally speaking, very well-run. That being said, this writer wanted to make clear to aspiring government officials before the election, something that is in need of consideration: a Beautiful Schools Movement.

Any candidate who has the courage to create a comprehensive beautiful school’s initiative for this city could potentially walk right into office. The reason is simple: parents will vote for what is best for their children, and a person with an innovative plan is bound to win.

It is no secret that more than a few Boston Public Schools are outdated, ugly, and not fit for the current century innovative educational model-and should be torn down, consolidated, and replaced. When schools in Massachusetts- and a few in the citywere forced into turning off water fountains this past year because of lead and copper poisoning, it signaled a general problem of outdated design. But beyond safety issues, the city has a penchant for hanging onto second class educational architecture, like it is worthy of preservation.

Kids make jokes about which city schools look more like a prison, for unlike many adults, they cannot be persuaded by rhetoric when the ugly truth smacks them in the face. Reams of research will tell you that well designed schools have a significant impact upon learning outcomes. Yes, beautiful schools cost more money, but they save money in the end.

What would a beautiful school movement look like? Inspiring.

Think of innovative college campuses of today. When examining architecture that is highly rated, one often finds buildings that exceed standards in functionality, quality of materials, and innovative design, are not nor-

mally built by the lowest bidder.

What you end up with is a lot of mediocre buildings that people throw money into endlessly.

If the city can adopt a policy of finding the very best quality architectural design, end costs can be reduced by adopting an advanced architectural model that is then repeated in several locations. Essentially, as maintenance becomes very cost effective because of integrated- as with consolidated schools, the city can afford to buy something that doesn’t look like a warehouse. But don’t wait up late for politicians to discover this, as the general consensus must be that ugly schools are just fine because they are “cheaper”.

New consolidated schools is a good idea, and the plan that will gain the most traction will be the one that provides fewer schools that are the best quality model for educational settings. The most innovative educational architects are decidedly the creators of college campuses, where treating the school as a small village brings the best results. By creating a campus common with landscaped design and healthy environments, the city would also be creating places where community meetings are not an embarrassment. Here in New England there is no shortage of fine examples of great college campus design. It is understood that the nominal, low cost, driveby warehouse design has been the controlling aspect of many school designs of the past- but this does not mean the city should continue this model into the future.

On the Council, I know that he’ll always be there for seniors and working families across the district.

ast week was an eventful week for the City of Boston Credit Union. It opened its fifth and newest Branch here in South Boston, at 130 West Broadway. The formal ribboncutting, courtesy of Boston’s Mayor Martin J. Walsh, took place at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday evening, July 19. Many other guests were on hand for the ribbon-cutting - from the City, from South Boston, and from the City of Boston Credit Union itself.

Prominent among those who attended were the two CEOs of the City of Boston Credit Union. Yes, we said two CEOs. One of them was Dan Trombley, who retired from the Credit Union earlier this year. It was his original idea to expand the City of Boston Credit Union into a bricks-and-mortar location within the borders of South Boston (at 130 West Broadway). The other CEO is Dan Waltz, who recently joined the City of Boston Credit Union, replacing Dan Trombley and assuming the responsibility for a successful Branch startup at 130 West Broadway. The next morning – Thursday, July 20 - in an exclusive interview with new CEO Dan Waltz, he spoke of his background in retail banking in Pennsylvania and his education in Accounting (Dan is a CPA), followed by an MBA degree from Mt. St. Mary’s. He spoke of how his predecessor, Dan Trombley, had selected South Boston for a Branch, because of its dramatic growth. We’ll have more on CEO Dan Waltz in the future, but perhaps his most visible trait is “enthusiasm” – enthusiasm typified by quoting him: “We love what we do.”

Last Saturday morning, July 22, the South Boston Branch of the City of Boston Credit Union held an Open House at 130 West Broadway. Business was transacted, of course, and there were also many activities for visitors who just wanted to become acquainted with South Boston’s newest enterprise. Along with CEO Dan Waltz, Branch Manager Kerian Baszkiewicz and her Assistant, Alisha Blicker, welcomed the crowd of Credit Union visitors.

The evening was brilliantly sunny. A stage had been erected towards M Street, partly for the dedication to Lori, and also for a concert of Soul music in the Park later on that evening. Perhaps most impressive was the crowd that gathered – it numbered several hundred at least, and perhaps close to a thousand. Many took their youngsters to the Tot Lot; others walked dogs; many planned to stay for the concert.

But everyone came early enough to take part in the dedication of Lori’s playground at 6 p.m.

– the “Lori A. Miller Tot Lot”.

Many local officials were there. The Mayor of Boston, Marty Walsh, spoke quite feelingly. In attempting to express

his regard for Lori, the Mayor admitted that he could not find enough words to describe how much Lori had done for the South Boston community.

And indeed, she had accomplished more than most of us could ever even think of doing ourselves.

She was a pillar of St. Brigid Church and the South Boston Catholic Academy, an extraordinary fundraiser and community activist, a tireless political worker for the causes and candidates she believed in, and most of all, a family woman, whose presence could still be seen in her family – Brian, Kaitlin, Kristen, Kimberly, and young Brian.

Brian Miller spoke calmly and lovingly about Lori and how fortunate he was to have had her for his wife. The family then unveiled the sign saying “Lori A. Miller Tot Lot”, which is now in place on the new playground’s fence. Fr. Robert Casey, the Pastor of St. Brigid Church, stepped up to bless the Tot Lot, and the ceremony ended with everyone lining up to write their comments about Lori in a logbook by the stage.

And as a final thought, it is so completely fitting that Lori’s memorial will be always filled with children who are playing and laughing, set in Medal of Honor Park where heroes are remembered and where an occasional concert takes place. She won’t be forgotten.

Vintage Baseball on Georges continued from page 1 the Cincinnati Red Stockings, the first openly professional team that dissolved in 1870. The team briefly changed their name to the Red Caps when the national baseball league was founded in 1871, ended up being called the Beaneaters in 1883. The Red Caps/ Beaneaters apparently dominated the nascent national league, winning eight league championships in between 1877-1898, and had eight Hall of Famers. But wait, there’s more intriguing history.

Most Red Sox fans know that the Boston Braves started the “miracle” 1914 season in last place with a 4-18 start before they became underdog winners of the world series, but perhaps few know that the newly named National League team hailed from the Red Cap / Beaneaters, before becoming the Braves. In the 1914 upset season, the Boston Braves shockingly beat the New York Giants for the league pennant, going on to sweep Connie Mack’s Philadelphia Athletics in the series- being the first team to do so in baseball history. That worst to first championship game was the last championship for the Braves in Boston, and was looked upon nostalgically by old timer Red Sox fans during their 86year drought. Before the Boston Braves- the oldest continuously playing baseball franchise team- moved to Milwaukee

in 1953, and then to Atlanta in 1966, they played in Boston on The South End Grounds to 1914, and afterwards in Braves field - what is now Boston Universities Nickerson field.

Flash forward to 2017. One could see the rivalry between the Granites and the Beaneaters is rather a friendly one, and team members have known each other and faced off many times. The game was a high scoring battle of wills, as the lead changed many times, and with the quirky rules, it seemed like some players would inextricably be out, or land on another base. There was no umpire this time and the teams amicably settled calls with each other, passing jokes and jibes in a light hearted manner.

Naturally, South Boston Online was rooting for the Beaneaters, and when venturing into “enemy” territory to talk with the Granites, found them to be ornery in a fun spirited way. Beaneaters captain Patrick Riley was a more motivational coach than the Granite’s coach. The captain for the Granites, Brian Donohue gave me a suitably arch rival shot and quickly admitted that one player on the Granite team, Brian Travers was a stand in from the Providence Grays- a team with an extensive history itself, that won the world series title in 1884which is considered the first inter

the feeling of going back in timewhen baseball didn’t have all the hype of the big national leagues and really felt like a “lawn game”.

Georges Island was a hotbed of activity throughout the day, with the island attracting almost 800 visitors who came for tours, Civil War Dress Ups, or simply to picnic. The National Park Rangers and Massachusetts DCR Rangers were busy giving tours, answering questions, and providing living history displays. These folks and Boston Harbor Cruises have significantly upped their game, providing a smooth experience to island visitors. Fort Warren’s granite walls are beginning to show the signs of age, but Georges itself has come a long way over the years, with its own miniature museum, outdoor café, music events, indoor plumbing, and improved interconnections to the other islands.

Get out an enjoy the harbor islands before the season is over!

La Casa de Pedro: Fine Dinning or Classic Business Lunch!

T

he South Boston Seaport District dining and entertainment scene is heating up faster than a day at the beach in mid-July. Some of the restaurants offer ultra-high priced fare, and others have a split menu, allowing one to purchase high end entrees in house, or a decidedly reduced fair in a market shop attached to the restaurant. La Casa Pedro, owned by Pedro Alarcon offers a variety of dining and entertainment experiences, from business lunches, to elegant dinners and evening entertainment- plus a pretty solid take out menu for lunch.

Alarcon who hails from Caracas, Venezuela, has styled a unique menu that is decidedly more high end than his original more home style restaurant in Watertown, but still includes old world Spanish favorites like tapas, quesadillas, empanadas, cubanos, and seafood paella to more adventuresome pricy entrees.

I have to admit when I saw the fake palm trees outside, I laughed and was a little on guard, I mean: who puts palm trees outside in Boston?

The tongue in cheek entrance aside, the restaurant’s beautiful interior is a showcase of colorful modern design, art, and interesting curios.

I discovered the take out market on the side of the restaurant as I was leaving, and realized this is the ideal place for young professionals on a budget in the district to get a lunch al fresco. Along the same lines, the dancing scene with live music on Friday and Saturday nights at 9-12 is a pretty elegant scene.

South Boston Online writers, being ever so price conscious diners, would recommend doing the business lunch, first, by ordering the one of the Quesadilla plates served with guacamole, salsa, and black beans with rice. These come in a variety of flavors from beef, to shrimp, and chicken. I chose the Baby Luis’s chicken, and wasn’t disappointed.

It was moist and flavorful- and though the sides were a little too small for a $17.50 dish, it was just enough to satisfy when accompanied by an amber ale. The arepas are similarly little bite food, dainty little pieces of steak, chorizo and

the like, that would go down well if you are not planning on a big lunch.

The more adventuresome might try some smart tapas like Mofongo de Hector Pina, a mashed green plantain with fried pork, chicken and shrimp or Las Vieras de Yayi, seared scallops with roasted corn, peppers, in a tangy pepper sauce.

You will begin to get the idea that the menu is more of a hybrid of foods from Latin and South Americas, rather than a strictly Venezuelan restaurant, and that the executive chef, Jason Colon has included a host of expected Latin favorites modulated to satisfy North American tastes. The Carne a la Parilla, billed as Pedro’s mother’s favorite at $17.50 was modest portioned charcoal grilled steak, served with, black bean rice, tajadas, and yucca that fit my idea of a traditional Venezuelan meal. There are some heavy hitting entrees in the $30.00 category that look absolutely mouthwatering, but SBO is on a tight budget, so I stuck with the smaller, modest plates. The biggest bargain by far is the weekday happy hour menu between 4pm and 6pm.

It’s a good test of hospitality if you enter a rather fancy restaurant like this mid-afternoon, casually dressed and take a seat at the bar to be waited on to see if anyone pays attention to you in the down time. Many local restaurants that are considered high end are so full of themselves that it is off putting- with their glamorous help genuflecting to each other.

Not so here. The friendly, relaxed service from the bartender Edgar Ruiz reminded me of the gracious servers I encountered in the better restaurants during my year in Barcelona. When I asked him about the restaurant- unlike so many waiters in Boston- he recited the history of La Casa de Pedro, adding a contrasting explanation of the Watertown restaurant, and the new Seaport location. Cleverly realizing by now that I might be reviewing the restaurant, he brought Pedro himself out for a brief meeting. When people welcome you to their house, and treat you like royalty, you end up coming back for more. Located at 505 Congress Street, Boston, La Casa de Pedro has something for everyone.

Capo Night Scene: Conscious Reggae Takes Basement Capo downstairs had a lively club scene this past Friday with Conscious Reggae Band playing a mix of pop songs and Reggae for pretty much a standing room only crowd. As a basement bar this is definately a scene for the younger crowd, many of whom came dressed to dance and enjoyed the music.

The bar servers were nice, but a little understaffed for the occasion, but the audience was well behaved and had a great time.

the South Boston Chamber of Commerce joined forces with the South Boston Neighborhood Development Corporation (the SBNDC) to hold a Small Business Networking Reception. Representatives from approximately 40 small businesses showed up at the CAPO Supper Club to enjoy CAPO’s hors d’oeuvres and good business networking.

It was diverse crowd, ranging from Lucky’s Lounge at A and Congress to Camden Hydes in the Design Center to the many small enterprises along West and East Broadway. You certainly know that small businesses are a key part of America’s economy. They provide the most new job opportunities, as well as continually coming up with large numbers of new ideas and products. That’s just as true in South Boston, taken by itself, as it is across our entire nation.

One encouraging sign is the many local businesses that are being started up and managed by talented businesswomen.

That was especially notable during Tuesday night’s networking. And many young people all around South Boston are striking out on their own.

Some specific business news: Moss Lynch has started his own business in Event Photography, which he calls “Capturing Inspiration”. Lucky’s is now hosting Sunday night musical events that South Boston Online will review.

And the South Boston Street Festival is scheduled for Saturday, September 16.

Plan for it now; it’s just eight (yes, only 8) weeks away. The Festival, a real business blast, gets better each year. Be sure to mark Festival Saturday, September 16, on your calendar. Were you aware that during Festival Saturday, there will be non-stop entertainment on two stages all afternoon long?

The Soul City Band plays – well,

obviously – “Soul music”. They performed last Wednesday evening, courtesy of the City of Boston, in Medal of Honor Park on a portable stage that backed up on M Street.

Now, “Soul” stems almost entirely from the black experience in America. It is from the second half of the 20th Century; it incorporates elements of jazz, gospel, and R&B (rhythm and blues, which is also the ancestor of rock). Classic Soul began in the 1950s and ‘60s; vari-

According to their website, the Soul City Band plays everything from Classic Soul to Top 40 covers. And they certainly do, all with at least a touch of Soul underneath. And that’s good. What you might not know is that much Soul music is intended for dancing, especially dancing to Soul’s more classic styles. The Soul City Band were South Boston’s guests last Wednesday evening, and the group put on a truly enjoyable concert. The two saxes and two horns, in unison, had a reedy, brassy sound that was reminiscent of late swung music with improvised parts. The beat was right on, and the two vocalists were great – either together or solo.

Let’s invite Soul City Band back again sometime.

Fun in the Sun at Tynan Community Center Tynan’s Fun in the Sun Program is in full swing with the new Camp Director Emily Nagle at the helm.
