Entertaining Vintage Baseball: 1886 Style on Georges Island By Richard Campbell

T

he Boston Beaneaters bested the New Hampshire Granites 28-27 on Georges Island this past Saturday, in the 13th anniversary match-up between these two teams. The game was played according to 1886 rules with vintage thin gloves for pitcher and catcher, but gloveless for everyone else. Though the ball is slightly softer than a modern day hardball, bare-knuckled ball makes the game a little dicey. The rules are admittedly a little hard to determine. You’ve got to get seven balls to get a walk on, foul balls aren’t strikes, and any foul tipped ball caught is an out. The pitcher stands closer and delivers the ball according to batter preference: low ball or high ball, strike zones. It is a little confusing when

compared to modern day baseball, but that is part of the fun. Vintage Baseball is one of the great Boston Harbor Island traditions. Given that during the 1880’s there was no landscaped baseball diamond, the open field inside Fort Warren provides the perfect space that was suitable for nostalgic purposes, and has ample shade space for impromptu dugouts, near the island’s powder house. Though the Boston Beaneaters play home games in several other locations around town, there is something real special about baseball played on Georges, which has a long history of lawn games going back to the Civil War. The Beaneaters team had origins as the Boston Red Stockings from 1871-1875, because four of its key players came from continued on page 8
