facing East Broadway between M and N Streets, was first named a few years ago to recognize MOH recipients during their convention in Boston. It is also the site of the nation’s first Vietnam War Memorial. The view from the park’s northerly side spans South Boston’s Reserved Channel, including the landmark Edison Power Plant – soon to be replaced with a new development – and the magnificent cruise ships that regularly call at Flynn Cruiseport in the Black Falcon Terminal. Recently, The Cunard Line’s flagship, Queen Mary II, graced our waterfront.

Medal of Honor Park has been completely renewed. Much has been replaced or added. Lori’s passing generated an outpouring of tributes to her, her life, and her devotion to South Boston.

Free Summer Concert

DHA Announces Second Free Summer Concert The DHA (the Dorchester Heights Association) is pleased to announce its second free concert of the 2017 summer season. It will take place on Dorchester Heights this coming Saturday afternoon, July 15, from 3 until 5 p.m. Everyone is welcome; the concert is free to all. There’ll be food trucks there, for dining al fresco on the Heights. Family friendly activities will also be offered – tattoos or juggling or face painting or balloon men/women. These are for the kids, and will begin an hour before the concert begins, so come early. This will be a bluegrass concert by the Fort Point Ramblers – no connection (as far as we know) with the New Lost City Ramblers.

“Bluegrass” is a comparatively new form of American music combining folk and country dance airs. It features banjo, fiddle, and mandolin solos; it was developed in the 1940s by Bill Monroe, who was born and brought up in Beaverdam, Kentucky. She will always be remembered as a person with an unmatched enthusiasm for life. It is entirely fitting that the playground in Medal of Honor Park be dedicated to

Lori. Her name will now evoke the sounds of children laughing and playing, as well as the sight of community members silhouetted against an iconic South Boston view. Please plan to attend the dedication of the Medal of

2017 Club Cruise Over the Top...

by Rick Winterson The Annual Boys & Girls Club Cruise took place last Thursday evening. The Cruise is a much-anticipated July event to raise funds for the summer activities at the Clubhouse on Sixth Street on the corner of F. And as always, it was a success.

The Cruise is not just for sightseeing, although that’s one of its major features. As the evening wears on, it becomes a dance Cruise. Topside, the upper deck featured a Cruise regular – DJ Doug Lane from WEEI, 93.7 FM. He kept the beat moving. Perhaps the photos are the only adequate way to describe the dancing that took place topside. To say the (very) least, it was “non-stop”.

The Cruise took off from Commonwealth Pier promptly at 7 p.m. on the Provincetown II. The rapid development around Commonwealth Pier since last year looked quite impressive. The weather actually smiled despite the partial cloudiness, which made the sunset unusually beautiful. The typical sights in our Harbor hadn’t changed, of course, but seeing things like Boston Light and Spectacle Island close up makes a difference. And sure enough, the Cruise encountered one of Boston Harbor’s recent “blooms” of diatomaceous organisms, which are natural and entirely harmless. They’re completely inert – they just look bad, that’s all.

A very pleasant surprise was having pianist and vocalist Kenny Morrell entertaining on the lower deck. He’s well-known around South Boston; we have written him up before in South Boston Online. Kenny has much expanded his repertoire – from the 80s (“Desperadoes” by the Eagles?) till the present. And he rendered his own version of Benny Drohan’s “Southie Is My Home Town” (Drohan composed that back in 1924 – 93 years ago). With his voice strong and well-pitched, Kenny kept the lower deck jumping till the end. He performs locally – look him up at KJM435@comcast.net.

Later on, the sky cleared and it turned cool and breezy, but the non-stop dancing kept all concerned warm. Even though much energy was expended, the action was mostly uneventful, except for spilling a drink from the upper deck onto someone’s iPhone on the lower deck. The Provincetown’s return

Boston’s Best – 2017 The Improper Bostonian, in its recent July 5-25 issue, published their list of “Boston’s Bests” as of mid-year, 2017. Some 220 enries in total (both in and around Boston) made this list, 15 of them located in South Boston. South Boston Online will comment as follows:

by Rick Winterson South Boston has been mentioned at least occasionally each year – usually about a half a dozen times - in the annual lists of “Boston’s Bests” assembled by the Improper Bostonian biweekly magazine.

Sometimes, South Boston had been mentioned because of its geography, especially its beaches, which are certainly very fine.

This year, the ol’ hometown received 15 Boston Bests, spread fairly evenly over all of South Boston’s major neighborhoods – Fort Point, its rapidly developing Waterfront, and the more residential areas of South Boston.

Now, 15 out of 220 Bests is a reasonable achievement, we guess.

To use figures, South Boston has about 5% of Boston’s population and 10% of its total area, so 15 out of 220 isn’t bad. Also, many of the 2017 Boston’s Bests listed in the Improper aren’t in Boston itself.

They may be the Best but they are located in nearby towns instead, primarily Cambridge, Somerville, and Brookline. To repeat ourselves, 15 looks pretty good to us.

- The selection of Bests, as well as what their Bests are listed as, seems “uneven” to us, to say the least. Many are obvious; others are confusing. And we have a question or two or three: Why isn’t Barbara Lynch’s Menton a Best?

Is the Best award to the Society of Arts and Crafts for what they have accomplished in their “new digs”?

Or is that award for the design of the “new digs”, which was finalized before the Society moved in?

Don’t a couple of these Best awards seem, well, a little silly to you?

To be fair, it is encouraging that many (seven) of the Bests are located either along Broadway or only a block or two away. Broadway is South Boston’s “Main Street”. We have pictured a few Bests in this article, we spoke of CAPO’s Best new addition in our last issue, and the others include Coppersmith, Alice Walk, and South Boston Yoga.

We’ll close this article by venturing – hesitantly – beyond the borders of South Boston to mention a few truly deserving Bests elsewhere. Introduce yourself and your friends to Rowes Wharf at the Boston Harbor Hotel (Best summer scene). Google up their summer musical schedule and enjoy. Try the Best pho at Anh Hang in Fields Corner – unpretentious but divine! If you are planning a really huge reception, consider the JFK Library. Believe it or not, it’s the least used of all the Presidential Libraries. And finally, there’s no better way to start writing than to enroll in Grub Street – it’s a unique organization.

And do you know what?

Fifth Annual 02127/02210 Exhibition

Spoke Gallery, located at 110 K Street (second floor), is currently hosting an exhibition entitled simply “02127/02210”. Eight artists who live and/or have studios in South Boston are featured.

The host entity for Spoke Gallery is Medicine Wheel Productions, who has left its imprint on South Boston from No Man’s Land to the walls of Fort Independence on Castle Island. In addition, “02127/02210” has beenexpertly curated by local L Street resident, Kathleen “Kathy” Bitetti.

Eight local artists are featured in “02127/02210”, each of whom is presenting a small number ofcarefully selected works. There are less than 50 works in total, which means that the viewer can take inthe entire exhibition, while spending viewing time thoroughly enjoying and appreciating the variouscreations at a leisurely pace. The works range from impressionistic to completely abstract, and includemixed media and 3D assemblages/sculptures. “02127/02210” offers an excellent cross-section of local21st Century works by artists who have been widely exhibited. It will be at Medicine Wheel’s SpokeGallery (110 K) until Friday, August 18. HOURS: WED-THU, 12 to 5 p.m.; FRI, 12 to 4 p.m.: and by appointment.

The eight artists may well be familiar to you: Joe Caruso, Maggie Connors, Sally S. Fine, Kelly Anona Kerrigan, Rashad Nelson, Robert Siegelman, Pat Steiner, and Lenore Tenneblatt. Joe’s abstracts are inspired by nature and working archeological grids; Maggie’s pallet is earthen and gray, with the subjects symbolically (shyly?) turning their backs in the viewers; Sally is exhibiting her more recentsculptures, which depict her love of the sea both in her work and in her life; Kelly states, “My work isbased in portraiture and figuration … a perception of self.”; Rashad is showing a recent large scaleabstract painting, with echoes of his prior efforts in street art, graffiti, and tagging; Robert’s

There’s a backstory here. You may not realize that South Boston is the home or place of work tohundreds of artists – we might be living in the largest single art colony in New England. You must havenoticed that the exhibition’s title is actually the two South Boston postal Zip codes.

“02127/02210” wasfirst inspired by a 2011 photographic exhibit at Medicine Wheel called “Southie Is My Home Town”. Thediversity and amazing action in these photos led to a decision to create an exhibition that combines allof South Boston to depict the huge reservoir of talent within our borders.

Waiting for the Pizza: Boston’s First Pizza Festival

hoever said Bostonians aren’t a very patient group of people should have been on hand to see the massive lines of cordial people stretching around city hall plaza this past Saturday for entrance into the first Boston Pizza Festival. As the sun beat down at high noon on the crowded red brickyard, people streamed from one line to another between hot ovens to get a little taste of heaven. South Boston’s very own Lincoln Tavern was on hand to compete for recognition among some local pizza legends like Bertucci’s and Regina Pizzeria, as well as erudite shops like Upper Crust and Antico Forno, and Italian guests. In my humble opinion, Lincoln was easily outcrusting some of the bigger guns.

Since this was the first Boston Pizza Festival I won’t rant too hard on the clear logistical problems mainly: one entrance, a limited drink bar, and some of the well, not so discounted prices on everything.

The entrance fee to the gauntlet was $20.00 for the average Joe, and $50.00 for the VIPs, which made some five dollar slices seem a little on the high side, but locking the economics of such an enterprise must be daunting. There were about twenty-five vendors, and after three or four slices, one was quite satiated. Lincoln, like other locals, offered the reasonable three buck slices, and they seemed to have control over their lines a little more than some of the stands from Italy. By the nature of the small ovens, the pizzas themselves were small, which did make keeping pace a challenge.

As everyone knows, pizza is not strictly a one off Italian invention, but more of an adaptation of various flatbreads over centuries, perhaps starting with ancient Greeks, then becoming popular with Roman soldiers who laced focaccia or matzos with olive oil and cheese.

Naples is given credit in multiple sources in bringing pizza into the pre-modern world around the 16th century as street vendor food for

the poor- but the tomato sauce islike the tomato that preceded itan American innovation. It was around 1900 that pizza arrived with Italian immigrants in the Americas- and was considered an ethnic food for the neighborhoods.

By the time allied troops landed in Italy for WWII, the pizza tradition was well established, and not too long afterwards, North America and Canada experienced a pizza renaissance. Given the wonderful taste of fresh pizza with cheese, tomato and basil, one wonders what took us so long.

Most of the pizza we tasted was very good, but one of the fancier pizzeria’s had problems with taking things out of the oven too soon, and though flavorful, did not pass crust muster. There were some clever demonstrations, and a tasteless disc jockey who didn’t get that idea that Italian music, or something fun might be more appropriate while eating, than noise. The treeless plaza was festooned with colorful umbrella tables, which excessively advertised Budweiser- an irony since beer was very hard to obtain.

We ended up taking fizzy water instead to avoid the long line.

There were some clever displays, pizza tossing, a token Ferrari, and WBZ Radio had a friendly crew on hand. Pizza must have a civilizing effect, for I can’t recall a Boston mass event where people were so positively friendly. I understand that the city wants desperately to promote city hall plaza, but I would suggest until they get some trees, they might want to try the Boston Common.

Searching for Green in the Seaport Landscape Architecture create a visual jungle- with the small humane “Common” being the singular exception. Parks are scarce, but credit should be given to the Seaport Hotel for giving its patrons two small oasis gardens.

As alien as the star-ship Enterprise Boston Convention and Exhibition Center is, at least it wassn’t another glass cube. If someone wanted to create an alternative green space, making a more garden friendly World Trade Center Avenue might be the place to start.

By Richard Campbell Frank Lloyd Wright was known as the quintessential modern architect- who for all his reputed arrogance- respected the role that landscapes play in making urban buildings approachable for humans. American corporate architects in general, because of the cost efficiency demands of big businesses, did not follow in this geniuses’ footsteps. After careening from one monstrous style to another; they have ended with the ubiquitous world of glass cubes born from curtain wall architecture. The vast majority of American corporate architecture reveals a distinct lack of imagination, and for the most part, the yard of successive glass boxes on the Seaport district is no exception.

Wright’s post-modern successors designing the newest buildings of the Seaport District did not seem to have a vision of how to take advantage of the beautiful Boston Harbor beyond providing aerial views to the select few. Some of the walkways taking shape look more like allys than promenades.

What started out very impressively twenty years ago with the coupled Moakley Courthouse looking contextually towards the Bostonian Hotel through its grand bowed

The small piblic green space called the Commons in the foreground is one of the few landscaped areas in the Seaport District. window, and its beautifully crafted green public space, will hopefully find more continued focus in the innovation district of the past eight years. While it is amazing to witness the sheer number of buildings rise from what were essentially parking lots in such a short period of time- one has to wonder if someone kidnapped the landscape architects. Outside of some small flourishes, this land of sterile boxes is in desperate need of some organic touch. It is not merely the paucity of trees, which can be remedied easily enough; but the lack of vistas, or the feeling of walkable avenues that lead

down to the ocean. Contrast this to the new boulevards hugging the water in Barcelona, or the park lands left to us by Olmsted on the Charles. When one looks at aerial pictures of the Seaport district the lack of green space becomes even more obvious.

But even from a strictly commercial point of view, the design of the Seaport is very much modeled on a highway-car culture that dispenses with the needs of the walking pedestrian. After one crosses the bridge from downtown into the Seaport, it feels more like a constrained highway, than a seaport boulevard.

The design is lacking an organic center of gravity, partly because the ocean is hidden so effectively.

Though the buildings are completely orderly- the massive roads

I realize doing so will not “hide the noise and smog”, but given a few years, a more pronounced avenue of gardens could make a dent. It is understood that corporate high rise businesses are designed for professionals slipping from their underground garages without ever touching the street, but one of Boston’s central attractions is that it is a very walk-able city. The core of the Seaport district is a very complex transportation center, but it needs to more carefully consider the pedestrian in the public space if the designers wish to make it a district that people come to stay, shop and socialize.

But even if some clever landscape architects added more green space, this wouldn’t solve the winter problem. At the risk of asking for one more glass house I must present a vital truth. If ever there was a district created that so badly needs a large indoor Botanical Garden at its center, the Seaport District is that place. Build it, and I assure you, people will come to in droves to be refreshed throughout the year.

The barren open bridge to the Convention Center, screams out for landscaped plantings, or a covered walkway to avoid the elements.

Continually increasing the green space on the streets of the Seaport will make them less like highways and more like boulevards. The almost completed 121 Seaport reveals a more innovative design, adding some curved dimensionality to the land of boxes. Some birch trees taking root on the tree lawn on the “common”. This is a district that needs a few more off season draws- the author hopes for one more glass box- an indoor botanical garden.

ark your calendar and bring your friends and family to a fun and free Neighborhood Block Party! Thursday nights in July and August from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., the Mayor Martin J. Walsh Summer Block Parties will offer a variety of free activities including music, a cookout, snow cones, various activities, swimming, and resource tables from every department within the City of Boston Health & Human Services Cabinet.

These departments will have lots of great information to share and giveaways. The South Boston BCYF Condon Community Center will host on Thursday, August 10th and will include. The Block Parties are generously supported by the Foundation for BCYF.

New England Holocaust Memorial on Congress Street

Rededicated by Governor Baker and Mayor Walsh, along with Holocaust survivors: Steve Ross, a survivor and founder of the New England Holocaust Memorial in Boston, along with his good friend, former Mayor of Boston Ray Flynn. Coffee with a Cop

by Rick Winterson One of the more popular local events is actually quite informal and draws a large crowd. These events are called “Coffee with a Cop” – hour-long, weekday morning kaffeeklatches sponsored by the BPD’s Station C-6 at various venues around South Boston.

The most recent one took place on Wednesday morning, July 12, in Cranberry Café at 704 East Broadway. It was hostessed by the Café’s owner, Cathe Walsh.

The rehabilitated and new buildings are anticipated upon completion of the full build-out to contain approximately 2.1 million square feet of residential, office, hotel, retail, restaurant, and other commercial uses, together with ancillary parking.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Oranmore Enterprises, LLC is proposing a new mixed-use building of approximately 98,000 square feet of gross floor area on the site located at 87 - 93 West Broadway in South Boston. The development will include approximately 65 residential units, 5,617 square feet of ground-floor commercial space, 2,020 square feet of proposed community-use space, and 64 garage parking spaces accessed from Silver Street.
