Collins Votes for Equal Pay State Rep. Nick Collins joined his colleagues in the House of Representatives in passing legislation to ensure that men and women receive equitable compensation for comparable work. The bill prohibits discrimination on the basis of gender in the payment of wages for comparable work unless the variation is based upon a mitigating factor including seniority (provided that paternal, family, and medical leave don’t reduce seniority); a system that measures earnings by quantity or quality of production, sales, or revenue; education, training or experience. “I am proud to have been a part of this landmark legislation” said Representative Collins. “There is no reason why my any woman should be paid less for equal work. It is about time we set clear guidelines for
comparable work, and do away with the gender wage gap so that Massachusetts can remain an economic leader, as well as a leader in equality.” Notably, the bill would prevents employers from requesting salary history in hiring, a measure designed to end the self-perpetuating cycle of wage disparity. Massachusetts would be the first state in the nation to adopt such a provision. However, prospective employees would not be barred from voluntarily disclosing their past salaries. In drafting this bill, the House of Representatives focused on building consensus to ensure that the legislation would be workable, effective and sustainable. Key to those efforts were defining “comparable work” and maintaining flexibility for performance-based compensation.

On Saturday July 16th Bob Juliano a board member of the Old Colony Tenants Association hosted his fifth annual trip to Water Country in Portsmouth New Hampshire. the trip is for the community which is predominantly low-income families. Bob says today’s trip wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for Bill Mcgonagle of BHA and Beacon communities
who donated money to rent the bus buses out for the day, he’d also like to thank The Spot for donating t-shirts for the bus monitors, Bob would like to especially thank his family who took time out of their day to help flyer and sign up families for the trip, this year Bob had about 170 members from the community attend his trip. Dawnmarie Salmons: Boys & Girls Club Music Director Spotlight
by Rick Winterson You perhaps saw the recent “Music Parade”, which played and marched on Friday, July 15, from the Boys & Girls Clubhouse on Sixth Street down West Broadway to the Boston Police Department’s Station C-6. It was quite an event – the creation of Dawnmarie Salmons, the Music Director at South Boston’s Boys & Girls Club. The event was evidence of Dawnmarie’s love of music and her ability to think “outside the box”. Dawnmarie is a local young lady. She was brought up in the Clam Point neighborhood of Dorchester and went to the Boston Arts Academy. Her first key encounter with music took place at an early age; it was both memorable and transformative. Dawnmarie was in the fourth grade when a high school band visited her school. The band marched up and down the corridors, and she was totally captivated by the sound of the band’s French horn – a French horn, properly played, is variously described
Dawnmarie Salmons, the Music Director of the South Boston Boys & Girls Club. as “rich”, “melodic”, “haunting”, “mellow”, whatever. It certainly does not sound “brassy”. Her love affair with music began right then. In addition, Dawnmarie has always loved to sing, but she used to suffer from intense stage fright and was terrified of performing before an audience. This behavior eventually led her to an intriguing piece of self-analysis. After enrolling at Berklee School of Music, she realized that she was – in a sense – “hiding” behind her French horn. Her singing amounted to a sort of personal “escape” mechanism. She overcame stage fright, and ended up with a double specialization
– voice and French horn – from Berklee. Dawnmarie was granted her degree in Music Therapy from Berklee School of Music in 2013. She served as an intern for a year at Children’s Hospital while working part-time at the South Boston Clubhouse. She worked at the Quincy “Y” for a year, and then rejoined the Boys & Girls Club after the Edgerley Family renovation was complete. And she keeps (very) busy. She’s the oldest of four brothers and sisters – she’s their “youcan-do-it” person and their cheerleader. Her professional activities include working on
a CD at a studio in Harrisonburg, Virginia, that she calls the “Feel Good Mix Tape”. Most important, she has just enrolled in a concentrated, five-semester Masters program at Berklee. And think about this: Dawnmarie was eligible for a full music scholarship in the Massachusetts state college system. She chose instead to go into debt and attend worldfamous Berklee, which admits only one out of three applicants. “Music is my life”, she states simply but emphatically, even though someone once told her, “You’re not going to get into college.” Dawnmarie becomes visibly enthusiastic when she discusses her work at the Boys & Girls Club. In her opinion, the Club members are strong and resilient. They need music to express themselves – music confers its own learning power. With good reason, Dawnmarie is especially proud of the “Music Parade” to Station C-6. The officers loved what the kids did – the young musicians sang “You Are My Sunshine”, and then they got a tour of the stationhouse. As Dawnmarie puts it, “It was giving back to the community with music.”

Teen Beach Party Fun by Rick Winterson The Condon Community Center joined forces with the Curley Community Center on Wednesday, July 13, in a party sponsored by the Boston Centers for Youth and Families (the BCYF). It was a young peoples’ blast, with a DJ, water fun, beach games, a balloon man, and of course, a lot of hot dogs and hamburgers!

They Love To Sail Having Fun In The Harry Mcdonough Sailing ProgramBy Kevin Devlin They are having fun this summer as members of the Harry McDonough Sailing program which is located on Castle Island. They’re learning how to sail and are happily cooling off in the ocean waters of the Lagoon. They’re enjoying themselves but also have to behave responsibly and listen attentively to the program supervisors (whom they all like) when they explain water-safety precautions. The three boys enjoying life at Castle Island sailing and splashing around are, Jackie Murphy, Mike Whalen, and Corey Legere.

The mission of the school is through the shared efforts of parents, staff and community, to provide “…its students with the ability to become lifelong learners…and to develop the pursuit of excellence while recognizing and appreciating diverse needs and potentials.” Jackie’s favorite subject is math. He said he’s a straight “A” student and someday hopes to be an engineer, or a marine biologist, or a professional hockey player. His favorite color is green, his favorite food is mozzarella sticks, and his favorite professional athlete is Patrick Kane who plays for the Chicago Blackhawks in the NHL. Jackie is active on the playing fields. He has played in the South Boston Pop Warner Football League for the past five seasons. He’s used as a running back, quarterback, and as a defensive end. He’s been skating since he was two years old and last season was on the Pee Wee “A” team in the Dorchester Youth Hockey League. Jackie has also been involved in the Dorchester Youth Soccer League for the past seven years, and is on their travel team. And he’s played Gaelic football and Hurling his “whole life” and loves these two Irish sports. Mike Whalen, 12, is the son of Mike and Jennifer Whalen. He has a brother named Timothy and a family dog named Toby, which is a mix of a beagle, pug, and Boston terrier. Mike’s
entering the seventh grade at the Oliver Hazard Perry School which is located in South Boston. The school’s mission is to “provide opportunities for students to explain their thinking with evidence-based oral and written responses” allowing “students to develop critical thinking skills needed for high school and college.” Mike’s favorite subject is math. He’s doing well in school and someday hopes to be an accountant or pursue a career in the United States Coast Guard. His favorite color is blue and his favorite food is buffalo tenders. In the athletic arena, Mike has played in the South Boston Pop Warner Football League for the past three years. He’s used as a defensive, end, defensive tackle, and on the offensive line. “I like the contact, he said. “I also like winning and being on a team with friends.” Corey Legere, 11, is the son of Adam and Tiffany Legere. His only brother is named Devin. Corey’s entering the sixth grade at the Abigail Adams School in Weymouth. The school’s mission statement is to provide “an academically excellent, developmentally, responsive, socially equitable, respectful environment which is supportive for all student’s learning and growth.” Corey favorite subject is math. He also said he’s doing well in school and someday hopes to be a lawyer or a professional hockey player. His favorite color is blue and his favorite food is tacos. Corey has played in the Weymouth Youth Hockey League for three years and is used as a left winger. He also plays Little League baseball and is a second baseman. “I like the contact in hockey,” he said. “I like baseball too and really like getting hits. In the two sports, I enjoy it when people cheer for me when I do something good. It makes me happy and I try even harder to keep doing good things.”

If they’re not in the pool splashing around, they are in the gym shooting the basketball, playing floor hockey or playing dodgeball. If they get tired of doing that, they’ll journey into the education room or the games room and hang out with friends. They are three Club girls. They are Brianna Hodges, Christian Brewster and Alexandria Davis. Brianna Hodges, 9, is the daughter of Michelle Bates and Daryl Baker. She has two brothers, Cody and Colby as well as one sister named Shannon. Brianna’s family has two dogs Diamond and Popeye, and a black and white cat named Oreo. Alexandria Davis, 11, is the daughter of Cindy Davis. She has one brother named Michael and her grandparents are Lorraine and Bobby Davis. She also loves her family pets, a cat named Dusty, a fish named Blur, and a frog her brother takes care of so that’s why she doesn’t know its name. Alexandria previously attended the Joseph P. Tynan Elementary School which located on East Fourth Street in South Boston, but will be going into the sixth grade at the Neighborhood House Charter School located on Queen Street in Dorchester. She’s also doing well in school and her favorite subjects are science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).Someday she hopes on playing professional hoop or pursue an engineering career. Alexandria’s favorite colors are purple and pink and her favorite food is pizza and potato chips. In her leisure time, she watches TV and plays video games. In the world of sports, she plays touch football with her cousins in New Hampshire and Dorchester. She’s also played soccer in the South Boston Youth Soccer league for the past four years. “It’s a great sport,” she said. “There’s a lot of running involved, which is good exercise.” If Alexandria lived in the White House as the nation’s top leader, she said that she would try to stop wars and make sure police were trained to protect everyone.

Meet Mary O’Shea Young Lady Headed to UMass Boston in September By Kevin Devlin
being part of a team, and I also liked winning most of all.” This summer, Mary is working as a camp supervisor at the Condon Community Center’s “Fun in the Sun” junior age program. She enjoys working with the youngsters. They’re a lot of fun.
She’s a mature, well-mannered, young girl who has a smile which lights up a room when she walks into it. Her name is Mary O’Shea. Mary is the son of Robert “Bobby” and Kelley O’Shea. She has a younger brother named Robert and an older sister named Sara. She also has a beloved family dog named Larry. Last June, Mary graduated from Boston Latin Academy, and in the fall, will attend the University of Massachusetts in Boston, where she will study accounting. As a youngster growing up in South Boston, Mary played a variety of sports. She played on the “E” and “D” teams in the South Boston Pop Warner Football League program. “My mom brought me to the practices for cheerleading at the
“I like working with the kids,” she said. ‘It’s fun. The kids are wellbehaved and fun to be with every day.” Mary loves South Boston. She enjoys life here and doesn’t have plans to leave any day soon. She has a great family, many friends and simply couldn’t see herself hanging her hat anywhere else.

“I love Southie,” she said. “I have a million ‘cousins’ even though we aren’t related. We’re just good friends who are like family and we are close and stick together. You can’t beat South Boston.”

It is a pleasure to be back at the Tynan Community Center for the Fun in the Sun Summer program. My name is Chris DeVine and I am in my second year as the Camp Director. During the year, I work as a Guidance Counselor in the High School as well as a basketball coach. I have been a guidance counselor for the past three years and this something that I truly enjoy. My true passion lies with basketball and I’m fortunate enough to be a coach. This allows me to take what I have learned over the years
and give back to the students. I played in college at Western New England University in Springfield, Massachusetts. After obtaining my Bachelor’s degree, I went onto Cambridge College where I earned a Master’s In Education. The camp gives the children a chance to grow socially, as we have many activities and games that require them to interact. This teaches them how to be part of a team and the appropriate ways to interact with one another, along with encouraging their peers. This week, the camp went to South

Boston Bowl and had a wonderful time. Each week, the counselor’s chose a camper of the week. This week’s award goes to Maliah. She always has a positive attitude and comes to camp with a smile. She is a very polite, respectful and engaged camper who is always willing to lend a hand. No matter what the activity is, she always participates and encourages her peers. Some of Maliah’s favorite activities at the camp are arts and crafts, the board game pictureka and ping pong. Until next week be safe and enjoy the good Weather!
