Councilors Flaherty & Flynn Support Concurrent Police Jurisdiction on Waterfront

Boston Cit y Councilor At-Large Michael F. Flaherty and Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn recently offered a resolution in support of concurrent police authority for State Police and the Boston Police Department on MassPort properties, including the South Boston Waterfront but excluding the Logan International Airport and airport related properties. Per state statute, the Boston Police Department currently does not have jurisdiction in these areas of the city.

The resolution was related to a House of Representatives budget amendment filed at the state level

by Rep. Nick Collins. The Boston

City Council has subsequently gone on record in support of Rep. Collins’ amendment for concurrent jurisdictions and equal access to police services for all areas of Boston.

Flaherty said, “The resolution that Councilor Flynn and I have offered in support of Rep. Collins’ proposed legislation does not take away the authority of the State Police – it seeks to provide the Boston Police the same police jurisdiction as the State Police in the City of Boston.

The end goal is to make sure that emergency response services from 911 are addressed immediately.”

Flynn said, “Our support for Rep. Collins’ budget amendment is all about public safety and providing equal access to services from the Boston Police Department for all of our residents, including our neighbors on the South Boston Waterfront. We are merely seeking concurrent jurisdiction there for law enforcement; just as we currently have for state roads, the MBTA and DCR property.”

Councilor Flynn to Chair Stray Voltage Working Session Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn has scheduled a Working Session on Friday, May 18th at 1:00PM for the City, Neighborhood Services, and Veterans & Military Affairs Committee to examine the issues related to recent stray voltage incidents in the City of Boston. These incidents include the tragic death of a dog on Southampton Street, a dog shocked at a puddle by a light pole at Castle Island in South Boston in March, and two dogs shocked at a manhole near the Adams Street Bridge in Dorchester this past Christmas.

Moreover, Flynn has since learned about several incidents similar in nature that occurred over a decade ago in Boston, such as two electrocuted dogs in Chinatown back in 2005, and a dog in Charlestown in 2006.

Flynn has since met with affected dog owners, officials from the City of Boston Department of Public Works, and officials from Eversource Energy.

Flynn said,” In the final analysis, we are holding this Working Session as dogs and pets are members of our family too. Speaking with those that lost their beloved pets, or nearly lost them - I just can’t imagine what they’ve gone through. My family would be devastated if that happened to us; as we all would be. It has reinforced my belief that we must bring the experts and stakeholders to the table

and discuss the issues related to stray voltage in the city more in depth.“ Flynn said,” It is my hope that this Working Session will allow us to work with the relevant City of Boston departments, perhaps our partners in state government at DCR, and the utility companies and talk about the causes of these incidents, the pertinent infrastructure involved, and whether a study of older infrastructure in the city is feasible. Gavin Community Party in One Week to get Chris Herren to take part in local recovery efforts. Chris was once a highly regarded draft pick of the Celtics, and actually played for them for two years.

But, drugs destroyed him as an athlete.

He now is in recovery and spends his total energies advancing the cause of recovery.

This writer can only add that Karen’s devotion to South Boston’s recovery efforts is deep and emotional.

It well deserves the honor she will receive next Thursday, May 3.

Karen’s employer, Creative Office Pavilion (the COP), has a lowercase motto, “make space happen”.

The energy contained in that motto could well apply directly to Karen herself. She makes things happen.

Non-stop! For example, she was the individual who spearheaded the initial Gavin Gala held in the IDB last year.

The move of the Gavin’s event, which is a fundraiser, to the IDB resulted from Karen’s desire to “go local” with the COP’s community support. After meeting John McGahan of the Gavin Foundation, she became aware – very aware - of our local crisis with drug and alcohol abuse. And she was also amazed at how many members of the COP staff knew of someone who was addicted to a substance She convinced her own management that supporting the Gavin was the way to go, and then went to Jamestown (who owns the IBD) and got them on board as well. Simply stated, the Gala was a huge success.

In achieving all this, Karen quite justifiably points to her notable talent for “making connections”. As another example of this knack, she has been able

Jeff carries with him an air of competence and practiced professionalism. And that’s the case.

As the Executive Director of the New England Carpenter Benefit Funds, he is responsible for the well-being of some 9,000 retired carpenters. And as an executive in a large, major craft union, he is well aware of the drug problem the Carpenter’s Union membership faces.

Construction is a dangerous profession. In fact, the construction industry nationwide ranks (unfortunately) with logging and underground mining as a source of injury. Sometimes, an injury is quite minor, like a pulled muscle, but even that can be very painful, especially in bad weather. This leads to the use of painkillers, sometimes over the counter, sometimes by prescription. You don’t have to be told about the potential for addiction. Jeff is a numbers man, and he says, “In America, with only 6% of the world’s population, we consume 90% of the painkillers”.

Jeff has seen the devastation of addiction among the same people that he manages benefits for. He deals with insurers like Blue Cross/ Blue Shield over medical expenses for addiction treatment. And due to his professional responsibilities, he has personally dealt with the tragedies that stem from our opioid epidemic.

He is very familiar with the Gavin Foundation’s efforts, beginning with the 12 step program. He’s especially impressed with the ongoing support that is available to the Gavin’s clients. In an article published in Benefits Magazine, Jeff’s key role in getting the Gavin Foundation and the Carpenter’s Union into a joint recovery program is stressed.

Underneath that calm demeanor, Jeff cares. Please come to see him honored on May 3.

If you haven’t been to South B Design Center, recently rechristened the “Innovation and Design Building” and often referred to as the “The IDB”, you are in for a treat at the Gavin Foundation’s Community Party on Thursday evening, May 3. The IDB was the WWII Boston Army Base, and at that time, possessed the largest “footprint-on-the-ground” of any office building in the U.S. Not only is the IDB the home of some of Boston’s most creative design shops, it’s also the new location of several highly technical

enterprises such as AUTODESK and America’s Test Kitchen.

Look for eye-catching lighting and a novel IDB space at the Gavin’s Gala. In addition to the Honorees, Special Guests Mayor Walsh and Gov. Baker are expected. Come right from work; arrive at 5:30 to take full advantage of the reception with its buffet stations and silent auction. At 7 p.m. the program begins. It will include a highly tempting Live Auction. Flying Remembered: “A Pilot’s Life” At the South Boston Branch Library

By Richard Campbell This past Monday night at the South Boston Branch of the Boston Public Library, retired pilot and author William Frew gave a brief talk on his book: “A Pilot’s Life”. There was more than the usual crowd that attends lectures presented by the South Boston Historical Society in the small program room, and the topical treatment of Bill Frew’s experiences moved by quickly.

He started his presentation with some first-rate jokes about General MacArthur, and then moved on to anecdotes from his training, and aviation history.

The stories he told were primarily about his life in training to become a pilot, as well as navigating the personal logistics of handling operations on a series of basses throughout training in the US Airforce.

Growing up in South Boston as a boy Frew described being captivated by the planes that f lew in around Boston during World War II. Coming from a fa mily with a milita r y background, (his father was in the Merchant Marines and his uncle was an assistant to General MacArthur), it seemed natural for him to enter into training and service in the US Air Force.

Of course, f lying jet fighters is anything but a natural act to do, so when former Captain Frew described some of the comical mishaps and close calls; the audience alternately chuckled and gasped with amazement.

Frew was in the A irforce during the post-World War II, Cold War period, and f lew commercially during the halcyon days of American aviation. His description of North American T28, and the modified Beechcraft T34 American trainer aircrafts in motion was enveloped with a sense of personal memory, and a kind of low key gallows humor.

Keep in mind, these are small planes by today’s standards, but they had up to a 40 feet wing span and can f ly over 300 MPH

and up to 35,000 feet. Even though the engines were quite reliable, unlike larger craft, there wasn’t a lot of protection if you crashed. In describing some of the fatal accidents other pilots had, Frew made it clear that in training, that pilots worried about being cut from the force, and could wake up with nightmares of going down. Since he was training in a non-war period, he had time to do things like coach little league baseball, and get to know the locals near the base.

He furthered his training on a T33 Jet fighter, a plane with a 455 MPH cruise speed, that could go up to 45,000 feet. After navigation and f light training he also f lew KC135 tankers that were used to refuel B52 planes in mid-air. These would have been

modified Boeing 707 planes, much like modern day jet liners, and very good for training to become a commercial pilot. The process of refueling requires a kind of precision in f light and attention to safety. The plane that Frew eventually piloted for TWA, the Constellation, had a storied history. It was designed

by Lockheed at the request of Howard Hughes, who had purchased a majority share of the company in 1939, and models were quickly adapted by the military as C69’s after breaking the transcontinental speed record in 1944. When the war ended TWA bought them all back from the military and refitted them for commercial use. The plane really heralded the beginning of luxury air travel in the United States.

The irony is that even after f lying some of these birds, early on he had to get someone from the Air Force crew to teach him how to drive his first car. The stories he told of being treated royally by farmers in the midwest, and some of the harrowing reminders of racism in the South, reminded the audience of what a different time it was then. The Cold War was different from our current troubles, and the urgency regarding nuclear annihilation seemed stronger. He mentioned that he was lucky in getting good trainers, both patient and knowledgeable- when sometimes he said the trainers could be mean. He spoke with fondness about training with the legendary Dutch Holla nd a nd being stationed near SAC Headquarters in preparation for war activity.

By the time he got to civilian life and f lying for TWA, our time was up. I only wished that young would-be pilots thinking of attending the Air Force Academy could have been in attendance, but the history buffs enjoyed the talk immensely.

Just ask Navy Veteran and South Boston Native, Michael Aldred, who for t u itou sly vent u red down a new career path when he tra nsformed a n empt y booze bottle into what would ultimately become merchandise for his local, budding business.

He was taking out recycles after a long night of tending bar when an idea came to him.

“This bourbon bottle caught my eye, when I decided to take something potentially destructive and turn it into something constructive”, Michael said. “I thought it would just be a fun hobby, turning liquor bottles into candles, to occupy my time.”

As a novice wine enthusiast, Michael began to see all bottles and labels in a new light. “I thought of how nice it would be if I could take someone’s sentimental bottle, say from their wedding or anniversary, and turn it into a keepsake”.

The next morning he woke with a mission, and a new entrepreneurial adventure began. With a natural aptitude for research, he quickly learned about glass cutting tools and submerged himself in the study of the vast selection of waxes and wicks in the quest for the perfect, quality candle.

He started sma ll, experimenting with rudimentary glass cutting tools and basic sandpaper in the basement of the K Street brownstone t hat he wa s ra ised i n.

“T he work shop”, built years prior by his father, a school teacher and exceptionally talented carpenter, proved to be the perfect space to nurture Michael’s creative spirit. “It just feels so peaceful to be in that space, creating, where I watched my dad create when I was a kid”.

Sr. Evelyn is a sign of spring. When she arrives here (as she has for the last three years), she brings warm, sunny weather to go with her warm, sunny persona.

She’s a true harbinger of South Boston’s better weather to come.

A key feature of the interview Sr. Evelyn granted South Boston Online was her complete, “sha r p -a s-a-t ack ” reca ll of her centur y-plus lifetime.

And most of this a c h ie vement-f i l le d l i fe t i me was devoted to her teaching right here in South Boston.

Sr. Evelyn was born in 1915. She joined the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth (the SCN) in 1932, immediately after completing high school here in South Boston, where much of her education had been taught to her by the SCN. This amounts to a total of 86 years in the Order. Upon completing her novitiate, Sr. Evelyn taught in Kentucky. Then in 1947, she joined other SCN sisters to open a school in Mississippi.

After three years teaching in the Mississippi school, Sr. Evelyn returned to South Boston, where she taught First Grade for more than 40 years. Her school at the corner of P Street and East Broadway was named “Nazareth”, then “St. Brigid School”, and now “South Boston Catholic Academy (SBC A)”.

A conser vative estimate of the number of pupils she taught would amount to well over a thousand (1,000+). That immense sweep of Sr. Evelyn’s

direct service to the youth – now the adults – of South Boston accounts for a major share of the esteem and affection everyone holds for her. Another share of this esteem and affection comes from Sr. Evelyn’s love of “keeping in touch” with us.

Four years ago, she returned to Nazareth, and now spends much her time writing letters or telephoning her multitude of friends here in South Boston.

Sr. Evelyn possesses many amazing qualities. Perhaps the most impressive to this writer was the sure, interesting way she handled this inter view.

Our interview was actually a fascinating and wide-ranging conversation, with Sr. Evelyn leading the way. She’s very well informed on a world-wide basis. She spoke of the SCN’s missions in Botswana (Africa) and mentioned the Order’s plans to open a school in Kenya. She said the SCN Order will be electing a new leader very soon, and is convening a delegates’ convention at one of the SCN Houses in Bangalore, India.

A mong a host of other topics, our discussion included some conversation about global warming. The SCN Mother House in Kentucky recently set up a working group to address this problem, adopting care of our planet Earth as part of their own mission. This part of our interview ranged from Earth Day on the 22nd to renewable and nuclear energ y sources.

The Mother House in Nazareth is next to Bardstown, Kentucky, where Stephen Foster composed many of his classic songs, including “My Old Kentucky Home”. There must be something about the life with the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. There are three centenarians living at the Mother House right now – Sisters John Ann and A lice Teresa (both are 101), as well as Sr. Evelyn herself.

Sr. Evelyn is truly a good and remarkable person.

Polish Triangle Update

By Richard Campbell On May 3, the Polish f lag will be raised at Boston City Hall, between 10:30 AM -12:30PM in commemoration of Polish Constitution Day. Unlike the rather extravagant fall Octoberfest held on the church grounds, the coming Spring Polish Festival is practically a secret as one must do deep internet research to discover anything about it. The public relations committee is only known by a secret hand shake!

A ll kidding aside… The official spring Polish Festival is due to go off at the Polish American Citizens’ Club on May 6 th this year, and the modest remodeling of Pulaski Park is under way. The Friends of Pulaski Park are looking for volunteers to pitch in to help remodel the park and garden this coming Saturday April 28th between 10AM-2PM. The Friends of Pulaski Park a lso advertised some donation options: $100.00 for an engraved brick of someone you want to memorialize, and larger donations for f lower beds, shrubbery and bushes.

Of course, they will accept any donations to help with the remodeling of Pulaski Park, and this little festival has great food.

SBCA News Family Literacy Night Parents and children of South Boston Catholic Academy attended our First Family Literacy Night to see “literacy in action.” The event included our guest speaker-children’s author, Jerry Pallotta, South Boston Public Library Librarian- Laura Miller and breakout sessions led by several of our teachers. Our goals were: model reading/writing as an enjoyable experience, parents connecting with their local library, participation in literature experiences with their child and deepen the connection between home and school. The night was a huge success! Thanks to everyone who attended and participated in our event including the students and staff that helped organize this night! League a Major Win for Disabled Kids

Even though the Red Sox are riding high a few weeks into the season with the best record in Major League Baseball, another great baseball league enjoyed its 2018 Opening Day on Sunday. For many years, the great people of Braintree American Little League have run a Challenger Division for disabled and other special needs youth. The league is the passion of Dorchester native Joe “Okie” O’Connor, who last August was named both Massachusetts and Little League International Volunteer of the Year for his ceaseless efforts.

His Fenway Park and Williamsport, Pa., ceremonies were long overdue.

The league annually hosts over 100 players from more than 30 Massachusetts towns. The players wear MLB uniforms and play weekly games with their teammates and friends, both new and old. As a recently retired member of Teamsters Local 25, Okie and the league have connected with and benefitted from

the incredible generosity of Teamsters President Sean M. O’Brien and the union leadership. Local 25 provides the vast majority of the financial support for the Challenger Division, allowing each player to play the season for free.

On the night before opening day in Braintree, Teamsters Local 25 held its annual Autism Gala at the Boch Wang Center. President O’Brien and his membership have been longstanding supporters of those in our community afflicted by mental and developmental disabilities.

Many dedicated Massachusetts citizens work hard to help children with autism and various neurological diseases.

I see doctors, nurses and teachers helping these special needs children all the time in clinics, hospitals and schools. They are heroes, but so are the parents of these children. I want them to be reminded that we admire them, love them and will continue to pray for and help them till we discover cures to help their children get well. I believe that God and the Blessed Mother Mary in the upcoming month of May will shed light on medical research to help those heroic, beautiful children and their families.

But we can’t lose hope. It will happen.

The spirit of engagement with community shone through Sunday at Hollingsworth Park in Braintree, where hundreds of family members came out to cheer on their superstars on one of the first nice weather weekends of the year.

Supporting any league also requires an army of volunteers, and the Challenger Division not only has the dedication of longtime coaches like Marta Googins and Steve Reardon, but also newer faces. On Sunday, the league welcomed

some students from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, who wanted to make the experience great for everyone.

The kids in the Challenger Division won’t play for our beloved Red Sox one day, but they are loving to play each week for the Rangers, Mariners or Athletics in Braintree. Stories where community engagement meets organizational financial support and the volunteer spirit are not often in the spotlight, but it would be nice if this great sports story was an ESPN “SportsCenter” highlight.

April School Vacation Highlights Youth Wiffle Ball Tournament The BCYF-Tynan Annual Wiff le Ball Tournament proved to be a huge success. There were 30 participants made up of 8 teams. The older teens were teamed up with the younger ones and did a great job with them. It was surprising to see how well the younger ones hit and pitched. Just about every game was close and came down to the wire. Congratulations to the championship team: Mario Blasi, Dimitris Markos, and Joe Green, who was this years’ home run King. The winning team was awarded I-Tune gift cards.

Tynan Happenings

On Tuesday, Katie and the girl’s group went to Boylston Street to remember those we lost in the 2013 Marathon Bombing.

The girls were treated to ice cream at Emack & Bolio as well as headbands from Lulu Lemon.

Wednesday was a fun trip for a group of youngsters as they experienced a tour of America’s most beloved ballpark, Fenway.

The kids were educated on many historical facts about the Boston Red Sox and its legends. They were also thrilled to view the scenery and park on top of the green monster.

Friday, Greg and Katie took the girls to Launch Trampoline Park and the infamous Town Spa Pizza in Stoughton, Ma. They all worked up a hunger and ordered quite a few pies. Caleigh Houlihan

was the only one brave enough to try Katie’s favorite “pickle pizza”.

A great time was had by all!

We also had a tennis clinic in the gym followed by an outdoor cookout. As the

youth waited for their food there were some strategic games of corn hole and spike ball in the schoolyard. It was a great vacation week enjoyed by all.

Gillette Employees Donate Razors to Veterans for One Boston Day

Workers from P & G/ Gillette’s South Boston plant dropped off 700 donated men’s and women’s razors for the residents of the New England Center and Home for Veterans in downtown Boston, in honor of One Boston Day.
