Collins Heads to General Election

State Rep. Nick Collins currently represents the Fourth Suffolk District as a Democratic member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives.

He initially took that seat in the Chamber just over seven years ago in 2011. He is now seeking to become a member of the Massachusetts Senate from the state Senate’s First Suffolk District, replacing Linda Dorcena Forry, who unexpectedly resigned her Senate seat early this year. A Special Election to fill Dorcena Forry’s was called for by law As it eventually turned out, Nick ran unopposed in the Primary of this

Special Election on Tuesday, April 3.

South Boston Online congratulates him on his success in the Primary and wishes him the best during his campaign in the General Election, which is to be held on Tuesday, May 1.

Exactly who may be running against him is not clear right now, and as of this writing, we don’t have the numbers of votes cast in the Primary Election.

Please note that if Rep. Collins is elected to the Senate on May 1, he will be required to run again for the same First Suffolk District seat in the regular election coming up this fall.

Condon’s SBCA Wiffleball Tournament: A Home Run

For the past 3 years the BCYF Condon has taken part in the South Boston Citizens Association Annual Evacuation Day Events. This years’ pool and dodgeball events were thrilling.

On March 17th, we hosted a Wiffleball Tournament in the gym. It was a new sport to many of the kids and they loved it! Afterward, trophies and lunch were provided for players, parents and volunteers in the cafetorium where the 2018 Champs were crowned.

Special “Thank You” to Tom McGrath and the SBCA Committee for making this Evacuation Day season a great success.

Parking for the Public Good

T

he growth of real estate development along the main thoroughfare of South Boston has been enormous in the past ten years. We at South Boston Online have noticed all the new restaurants, boutiques, and dense new residential housing that has been added along Broadway, and simultaneouslythe addition of more cars. In a crisis of unending tickets and triple parking, local businesses struggle to keep patrons coming simply because finding parking is such a hassle. The developers have been very busy in South Boston, and the time for public parking garages is long overdue.

Imagine a future when you go shopping in South Boston and simply park your car in a garage near your shopping destination, or driving down Broadway without dogging parked cars. For this to happen, South Boston needs two parking garages strategically located: one near Perkins Square, and one on lower East Broadway. Public parking garages in general do not come about unless there is significant planning, and for that planning to occur on a city level, the business community has to be organized enough to focus upon engaging the city. The affirmative

answer seems pretty unanimous when you ask citizens of South Boston if parking is needed, but the sticky wicket is how many car spaces, and deciding exactly where the garages will go.

From an urban planning perspective, the city of Boston has a little bit more leverage when setting up the standards and providing space for such parking-the same city that has been approving increased density of South Boston without really attending to the parking problem. Any parking garage planned with more than 50 spaces must have a management plan approved by the Boston Department of Transportation. We think it is obvious that if you build garages, they have to be substantial enough to provide enough volume in order to be cost effective.

Building on West Broadway in logical locations like the current Athens Street lot, seems like a forgone conclusion, but for the objections of a small number of residents. The question is if the city is willing to generously compensate property owners in order to make space for sizable public parking. Approaching this issue will require a little courage on the part of our city councilors to do the right thing for the public good.

In the case of lower East Broadway, the concept of adding parking spaces to a new enlarged library with great community space has been

Less than three feet wide, you could park a lot of them, but it’s doubtful that anyone is South Boston would drive one! given some thought. It makes a lot of sense to build a new library branch, but residents who think South Boston deserves a new library would have to join business people to advocate for such a plan with the city. This kind of urban planning is not done without some disruption, but if the community agrees that doing so serves two common goods: building a significantly enlarged, modern branch library in a beautiful location, and making

parking available to fit the needs of thirty small business on East Broadway; then somehow urban planners can design a plan. We are not saying that these specific suggestions are even the right ones to consider, but putting an end to double and triple parking down Broadway is a smart move, and parking garages are the answer. Other communities have devised such plans with the city, so there is no reason why South Boston can’t do the same.

Laboure to Honor Father Joe at Spring Fete (Thursday, April 26)

by Rick Winterson Even in 2018, with its recent (very) cold nights and early April snow f lurries, you know that spring has arrived when the Laboure Center’s Annual Spring Reception shows up on your calendar’s horizon. This will be the 36th such Reception; it is just three weeks from now. It will occur on Thursday evening from 5:30 till 8:30 this coming April 26, at John Hancock Financial, which is in the Seaport District at 601 Congress Street. Specifically, the Reception’s locale is in Hancock’s Fourth Floor Atrium. If you have never been there, the one, single word that best describes t he Atrium is “Strik ing”!

More t h a n a ny t h i n g , Laboure’s Spring Reception is always a celebration. The high point of this year’s event will be a brief program, during which a highly deserving Father Joseph White will be honored.

Fr. Joe will receive the Jack Shaughnessy Ser vice Award, named for a key benefactor of South Boston’s Laboure Center.

Everyone knows Fr. Joe. This is in large part due to his outreach to, and connection with, those who are aff licted with substance abuse, as well as those who are in recovery. When asked about this “calling”, he humbly states that as a Catholic priest, he simply feels it is a part of his ministry to bring Christ’s blessings to those suffering from addiction. Fr. Joe uses optimistic words like “Hope” and “Recovery” when he talks about this mission. He firmly believes in the possibility of “Recovery” for ever yone who needs it.

Jacob “Jake” Bombard is the Director of South Boston’s Laboure Center. He’ll also emcee the Spring Reception.

Jake emphatically believes that Fr. Joe is a most worthy recipient of the 2018 Shaughnessy Award. He has written about Fr. Joe as follows: “In the time I have come to know Fr. Joe, I can say definitively

that there is no one on this earth whom he does not care about. He has healed many people suffering in our city simply by listening to them, by being honest with them, and by doing all he can for them. He seeks neither attention nor recognition. He seeks to do good.”

Well said, Jake.

Triduum: Three Days of Easter

What is often called “The Triduum” in Latin translates to “The Three Days” in English – the threeday, 72-hour period between Holy Thursday night and the end of the day on Easter Sunday. One of the reasons for this is historical: At the time of Christ 2000 years ago, new days traditionally began in the evening around sunset, not at midnight as they do now.

The Triduum thus includes Holy Thursday evening, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday until nightfall. In 2018, some 1,985 years later, the Triduum and all of its many events were observed and celebrated extensively all around South Boston. Easter greetings from the City of Boston, across the nation, and all over the world echoed here.

On the first Holy Thursday, Christ convened the Last Supper in a rented, second-floor room known later as the Cenacle in Jerusalem. It was for the Passover Supper, called “Seder”. Christ washed the feet of His Apostles, and He later consecrated the Supper’s bread and wine, thus creating the first Mass. The Last Supper is so called because that night, Christ was arrested and then condemned to death by Pilate the next day, as he (Pilate) literally, not symbolically, washed his hands of the whole affair.

The trials that Christ met with and endured, as He carried His Cross on the way to be crucified on the first Good Friday, are called the “Stations” of the Cross. There are 14 of these individual Stations along the entire “Way of the Cross”. A procession to commemorate these 14 Stations was held last Friday, March 30, at mid-day. Rev. Burns Stanfield of the Fourth Presbyterian Church led the “Way of the Cross” from St. Monica’s to the Heights. Volunteers carried a Cross and plaques that depicted all 14 Stations. They stopped, prayed, and sang 14 times along the “Way”.

Fr. Gerry Souza of the South Boston Catholic Collaborative spoke tellingly of the despair the Disciples must have felt, when their joyful Passover ended in the crucifixion and death of their beloved Leader on Good Friday.

Saturday is a day for the Easter Vigil. Lengthy vigil services were held on Holy Saturday evening, ending as midnight and early Easter Sunday approached. It was also a day for Easter Egg Hunts, one of which was held by the

HUB Church that gathers on Sundays at 401 D Street in the Aloft. This is an event for children and their families – perhaps 500 showed up at M Street/ Medal of Honor Park last Saturday morning. HUB Church thoughtfully included prizes, face painting, and the appearance of a humongous Easter Rabbit in their Hunt. With that many kids, a good time was had by all.

Eggs at Easter symbolize, among other things, a new life and Christ’s emergence from the tomb. They are associated with Easter worldwide. For instance, the Polish decorate their Easter Eggs (“pysanky”) elaborately as a kind of prayer on Holy Saturday. And other Easter Egg customs led up to the extraordinary craftsmanship found in the Faberge Easter Eggs possessed by the Romanov Czars of Russia.

Perhaps the most significant observances on Easter Sunday are the Services at Sunrise. This stems directly from the Gospel according to Saint John the Evangelist. He wrote of Mary Magdalene going to Joseph of Arimathea’s tomb, where Christ was buried. Just at sunrise, she, John, and Peter discover that Christ’s body has disappeared, later finding out that He had Risen. St. Brigid Parish held a Sunrise Mass this last Sunday, said by their Pastor Father Casey on Castle Island at exactly 6:27 a.m. This has become a true South Boston tradition.

The congregation was not deterred by the clouds or the (very) brisk wind – perhaps 1,500 or more showed up to observe and share in the message of early Easter Morning. – “He is Risen!”

The Easter Season is the source of an incredible number of customs and stories. In this year of Our Lord 2018, Lent began on Ash Wednesday, which was also Valentine’s Day. We don’t have to tell you any Valentine stories. But

Easter fell on April 1, All Fools Day. Now, think about the word “Fool” in Christianity. St. Paul in his Epistle to the Corinthians writes of Christians being “Fools for Christ”. The humble St. Francis of Assisi was ridiculed as a “Fool” for giving away everything he owned to the poor, even the cloak on his back.

Now, Easter is a movable feast. Its date varies each year. But it occurs on

the first Sunday after the first Full Moon after the Spring Equinox. Well, the Spring Equinox this year was on Tuesday, March 20; the first Full Moon after that was on Saturday, March 31. So this year, Easter fell on Sunday, April 1. Simple?

And Lent began on February 14 in 2018. Forty-six (46) days later was Easter Sunday on April 1. But take out the six Sundays when no Lenten fasting is required, which leaves 40 fast days – that’s the number of days Christ fasted in the desert, according to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Make sense?

And Joseph of Arimathea, who gave his own tomb to Christ’s burial, was also supposed to have owned the tin mines in Cornwall in Ancient England.

According to legend, Joseph buried the Cup Christ used at the Last Supper (called the “Holy Grail”) in one of his tin mines. A thousand years later, this legend led to countless other legends about King Arthur sending the Knights of the Round Table on quests to find the Cup – Sir Galahad was the one who found it.

“Breathing Room: Mapping Boston’s Green Spaces”

hat’s not to like about the Norman Leventhal Map Center at the Copley branch of the Boston Public Library? Almost every time I stop by the place they have something new and interesting to see. For those of you who think this is simply a room full of maps, you have to see the current gallery exhibit: “Breathing Room: Mapping Boston’s Green Spaces” to get a full feeling on the history and development of the great park systems we have in Boston. From the historical to contemporary park projects, this is a really well planned exhibit. Technically if you can’t make it to the library, you can see much of this exhibit onlinebut what would be the fun in that!

This exhibit opened, quite suitably, on March 24th when we were all gasping for spring. Seeing the exhibit with a guide is an excellent idea, as I was lucky enough to happen upon Dory Klein, the Map Librarian, giving the fullfledged tour. I can assure you her

park knowledge adds interest to the subject, and she has the knack for presentation. Besides this, the exhibit features Kid Friendly labels with abbreviated descriptions and play activities set up for the kidsplus interactive history screens.

In short, make time to really see this exhibit, it will give you a historical overview of the green space we have in our city, and how it got to be shaped the way it is.

It is a matter of course that the exhibit includes many documents and maps from the Emerald Necklace, the Arnold Arboretum, Franklin Park, (the largest park in Boston) the Charles River Esplanade, the Boston Common, the Public Garden, and even resources on other similar developments of South Boston’s Pleasure Bay, and the Boston Harbor Islands. The history of

landscape pioneers like Frederick Law Olmsted and Charles Elliot is underscored with original maps and plans they made when shaping the city under the guise of the then Metropolitan Park Commission- (a precursor to today’s Department of Conservation and Recreation).

continued from page 6 health conditions. The level of over-crowding would be hard for a lot of us to imagine. A popular solution to these urban problems in Europe was the establishment of parks, and Olmsted (also famous for Central Park in NYC) was the ideal designer to create this robust healthy system, the majority of which still serves Bostonians today.

These parks are considered the

“lungs of Boston” providing an enormous amount of fresh air, as well as providing beautiful places to visit when spring and summer comes- if that ever happens.

All kidding aside. The completion of the major Boston parks, dubbed the Emerald Necklace was something of a miracle. It runs over seven miles,

and is managed by the Emerald Necklace Conservancy. Recently, the Muddy River part of the plan has received “day lighting” that is, the stewards have freed the river up that was choked into narrow underground tunnels, and have restored its landscape. There are also contemporary showings of designs for the Rose Kennedy Greenway

2018 – History Speaks

by Rick Winterson This year of 2018 is historic.

It is both a Centennial and a Bicentennial in South Boston.

At the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 – 11 a.m., November 11, 1918 – the Armistice that ended World War I was declared.

That was a century ago this year; it was the first overseas war in which the American military played a key part. Last year, April 6 was the 100th Anniversary of our entry into World War I. Then President Woodrow Wilson asked Congress to approve his Declaration of War on April 6, 1917.

World War I was fought with the first artillery shells, armored tanks, submarines, military aircraft, poison gas, submarines, torpedoes, and machine guns. It was a horror. Ten million soldiers and ten million civilians were killed. It was called “the War to end all Wars”, but it is perhaps better described by quoting the Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman, who uttered that famous statement, “War is Hell!”!

South Boston Online will soon start publishing a series of articles

and profiles on South Boston’s own involvement in “the Great War”.

There were 103 military deaths, mostly among soldiers enlisted in the so-called “Yankee Division”. Perhaps the best known among these heroes is Michael “Mickey” Perkins, for whom the Perkins School is named.

A much more benign Bicentennial is also at hand. Father Matignon, the first Catholic priest assigned to Boston and New England, passed away on September 15, 1818. He was initially buried in the Old Granary Burial Ground on Tremont Street in Downtown Boston. His Bishop, Cheverus, decided to build a Chapel in his honor. Ground was broken for this Chapel in December of 1818; it was completed and dedicated in 1819. Fr. Matignon was then reburied there, behind the Chapel’s altar. The St. Augustine Chapel on Dorchester Street – still in use – is the oldest place of Catholic worship in Boston.

South Boston Online will publicize and cover the events that will take place in observance of this Bicentennial year.

Celts Rap the Raptors

by Rick Winterson The Boston Celtics occupy a solid second place in the NBA’s Eastern Conference.

They were on a streak – six games in a row as of last weekend. They are in the top four of the entire NBA. They had been three games behind the Toronto R aptors.

A f ter Saturday’s 110-99 rapping of the Raptors at the TD Garden, the Celts were just two down in the East.

This is with three injured starters out for long periods – Haywood, Irving, and Smart – along with bench backups Daniel Theis and Shane Larkin. Still,

five of the remaining Celts hit double figured Saturday night, three of them making 20+ points – Marcus Morris (25), Jayson Tatum (24), and Terry Rozier (21). Led by Brad Stevens’ canny coaching, the team’s “D” held Toronto to just under 100 points.

By the time you read this, the Celts will have played both Milwaukee (41-35) and Toronto (55-21) again. Both will have been “away” games.

Top seed in the East for the Celts? We’ll soon know for sure. As of this morning, there are only four regular season games left to play.

Easter Around Southie

The Saturday before Easter was for once near perfect weather, and South Boston Online went out to some of the local shops to see how they are doing.

First stop Stapleton’s to see how Yanni is doing with the “rush”-. He looks pretty relaxed to me! He won’t be this year as he’s starting a new enterprise.

Then we stopped to talk to the ladies at Joseph’s, and they posed between the virtual mob scene to show us some Easter treats, and picked up a deli sandwich. They are coming up on a special anniversary soon- more on that later. Then onto Cafe Porto Bello, where I did convince the young shy waiters were shy, but the smell of sauces coming from the kitchen was oh so good!

The windows were scrubbed and displaying all matter of merchandise, so I guess we are ready for spring!

Mayor Walsh Opens Swan Boats on April 14 Mayor Martin J. Walsh will host the first ride of the season on the popular Boston Swan Boats as they open at the Public Garden lagoon on Saturday, April 14, at 10 a.m.

“This year the Swan Boats celebrate their 142nd season of providing joy and memories to residents and visitors in the Public Garden,” said Mayor Walsh. “We’re ready for spring in Boston and the tradition of joining the Paget family and local children for the first ride

around the Public Garden lagoon.”

This annual rite of spring is made possible thanks to the Paget family, owners and operators of the Swan Boats first launched by Irish immigrant and shipbuilder Robert Paget. Mr. Paget designed the Swan Boats after attending the opera Lohengrin in New York City. At the end of the opera, the hero crosses a river in a boat drawn by a swan.

The students are drawing pictures of the Swan Boats in art class and their work will be randomly selected from all the drawings created. All of the artwork chosen will then be on display at Boston City Hall.

2018 marks the 142nd season for the Swan Boats. The oldest and smallest boat in the fleet just celebrated its 107th season, while the newest was launched in 1993. The swan on today’s boats is made from either copper or fiberglass, depending on the age of the boat, and encloses a paddle mechanism that is used to foot propel the boat through the water.

Fully loaded, each Swan Boat weighs three tons and carries up to twenty passengers. The Swan Boats are built on oak framed pontoons sheathed in copper just as they were

initially constructed in 1877. After being stored in a safe place for the winter, the boats are returned to the Public Garden Lagoon in the spring with Mayor Walsh and his young guests celebrating the first ride of the season.

Mayor Walsh Host Coffee Hour in South Boston On Thursday, May 17th Mayor Martin J. Walsh and the Boston Parks and Recreation Department will host its 19th Annual Neighborhood Coffee Hour at Flaherty Park, 130 B Street, South Boston from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. “Our Neighborhood Coffee Hours give residents the opportunity to come out and spend time in their neighborhood parks and playgrounds, while meeting and talking to City representatives about issues that matter to them, their family, and their community,” said Mayor Walsh. “I encourage residents to stop by to chat and enjoy a morning outdoors with

coffee, snacks, and flowers from our Parks Department greenhouses.”

All participants will enjoy coffee and breakfast treats provided

by Dunkin’ Donuts and fresh fruit from Whole Foods Market. In addition, each family in attendance will receive a f lowering plant grown in the City’s greenhouses as a gift from Mayor Walsh.

Residents at the event will also be eligible to win a raffle prizes from Dunkin’ Donuts. Information will be available on City programs from the Boston Public Library, Boston Public Schools, Boston Police Department, and Boston Centers for Youth & Families.

South Boston Catholic Academy News Celebrating Easter!

During Holy Week, on Wednesday, March 28, 2018, the students at South Boston Catholic Academy prayed the Stations of the Cross which is a Lenten tradition. The Stations of the Cross are a 14-step Catholic devotion that commemorates Jesus Christ’s last day on Earth. The 6th graders wonderfully led the school in praying The Stations of the Cross. Students in 2nd grade celebrated their First Penance and students in the upper grades participated in confession.

The students celebrated Easter in their classrooms by doing special Easter projects, listening to Easter stories and having Easter Egg Hunts. We hope that everyone had a Blessed and Happy Easter!

Here’s the thing. You can’t receive a degree from these courses, they are for enrichment or merely to bone up on a subject, but be aware of your educational level when you sign up.
