Two weeks ago, South Boston Online was privileged to report on the near completion of the new Our Lady of Good Voyage Shrine, including its being declared a “Shrine” instead of a “Chapel”. Last Saturday, Cardinal O’Malley celebrated the Shrine’s completion and its formal dedication as the first new Catholic Church in Boston in 65 years.

ast Saturday, April 22, 2017, an expectant crowd gathered on the southeast corner of the intersection formed by Sleeper Street and Seaport Boulevard, at one of the major entryways into South Boston’s burgeoning Waterfront District. There was a respectful but clearly audible, ebullient buzz, as the crowd stood on the masonry porch of the newly completed Our Lady of Good Voyage Shrine.

“We’re very pleased that Secretary Peyser can join us for this special celebration,” said Mary Rose Durante, Esq., NDEC’s Executive Director and CEO. “He’s a respected advisor and policy-maker. We’re honored to have him with us as we celebrate our twenty-fifth anniversary.”

The celebrants begin the Dedication of the newly opened Shrine.

This Shrine is the first new Roman Catholic Church to be dedicated in the Archdiocese of Boston in just over 65 years – since St. John Chrysostom Church opened on Washington Street in West Roxbury on February 20, 1952.

Convention Center Supports Community

Over the last 10 years, since 2007, the BCEC (the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center) has shared the proceeds of its gate shows with South Boston. This has taken place through the agency of the non-profit SBCDF (the South Boston Community Development Foundation). Last week for the 11th time, the BCEC presented a check to the SBCDF. David Gibbons, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority, gave their 2017 check to Donna Brown and Bill “Touchie” McDonough from the SBCDF, while Patrick O’Brien from Sen. Dorcena Forry’s and the Convention Center’s Bob O’Shea looked on. The check was for the sum of $198,236. Afterward, Donna Brown said this money would be shared among as many as 60 local agencies and worthwhile causes in South Boston.

NDEC to Host Reunion for Cardinal Cushing Central Part of Center’s 25th Anniversary Celebration

Graduates of Cardinal Cushing Central High School are invited to an All-School Reunion as part of the Notre Dame Education Center’s 25th Anniversary Celebration. The reunion will be held from 5:30-8 p.m. on Thursday, May 4, at the Venezia Restaurant, 20 Ericsson Street, Boston.

Explains Mary Rose Durante, Esq., NDEC’s Executive Director and CEO, “After

Cardinal Cushing High closed in 1992, the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur wanted to continue their service in South Boston and respond to the needs of the community at that time. They decided to offer English classes for immigrants and GED (high school equivalency) classes for adults who did not have a diploma. That’s how NDEC came into being.

Our Cardinal Cushing roots have made us what we are today.”

Several former students and teachers at Cardinal Cushing now work at NDEC. Nancy Lee, an NDEC employee and a CCCHS graduate, says, “Our class had so much school spirit. We were very close-knit. The Sisters worked us hard, but we had fun, too. Many of us are still in touch with each other.”

Sister Margaret Lanen, SND, taught religion and math at CCCHS from 1974 to 1980.

Now Distance Learning Coordinator for NDEC, Sr. Margaret recalls

her years at the school: “It was a time of real change in the world, in the Church, everywhere. South Boston was in the news in 1974, the year that school busing began.

Our nearly 1,000 students, an integrated student body, wanted to be a model of how people of different races could get along. We had a wonderful school community.”

Sister Gerry Stanton, SND, serves as NDEC’s Immigration Case manager. A graduate of CCCHS, Class of 1957, Sr. Gerry believes that attending the school influenced her vocation. “What impressed me most was the way the Sisters would stay after school and their willingness to help us,” she says. “We got to know them through the time they spent with us. I didn’t know about the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur before I went to Cushing. And now here I am, sixty years later!”

Like her colleague, Sr. Gerry, Sister Catherine O’Brien, SND, is also a graduate of Cardinal Cushing, Class of 1960. “There were 225 girls in our graduating class, and the overall school enrollment was over 1,000,” Sr. Catherine says. “School spirit was alive and well, and we were offered many extra activities.”

Our Lady of Good Voyage: A Beacon of Hope Throughout Our Great City

Kristen and I, and my parents, were fortunate to attend Vespers (Evening Prayer) at Our Lady of Good Voyage on Friday night and the first mass celebrated by Cardinal Sean on Saturday. The new church is beautiful and reflects the maritime roots of the South Boston Waterfront.

I am proud that my family has been associated with the waterfront for over 100 years.

Both of my grandfathers worked as Longshoremen and dock workers. My father also worked there and then he worked hard as mayor to expand the Port of Boston and played a key role in the cleanup of the Boston Harbor. My uncles also worked on the waterfront and while in the US Navy, I was proud to assist city officials with logistic and public affairs support, when US Navy ships,

including USS John F. Kennedy (CV - 67), visited Boston.

This new church is special, with stained glass from St. Augustine Church, and the ceiling of the church is designed to look like the hull of a ship. I know Our Lady of Good Voyage will continue the proud tra-

dition of welcoming all and remain a beacon of hope throughout our great city.

It was during her high school years at CCCHS that Sr. Catherine learned about the educational mission of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur and their foundress, St. Julie Billiart. Upon graduating, Sr. Catherine felt called to join the congregation. Since then, she’s been involved for many years in teaching and administration.

“The Cardinal Cushing connection is what makes us unique,” Mary Rose says. “We’ve taken the best of the past and we’re blending it with the best of today so we can meet the needs of adult learners in the 21st century. It’s an exciting time for us and for our students. We can’t wait to see what the next 25 years will bring!”

Anthony, AIA, formally symbolizing the completion and conveyance of the Shrine by those involved in its design and construction. Cardinal Sean then beckoned the crowd to enter the Shrine in a colorful procession, including three Ecclesiastical Orders in full regalia. When everyone had entered the Shrine, the Cardinal blessed water and sprinkled the congregation, building, and sanctuary with it.

The Liturgy of the Word then followed. At its close, Cardinal Sean read the Gospel, which (fittingly) was from St. John. It told of the Disciples huddled in dismay in the Cenacle late on the first Easter, after which an absent St. Thomas refused to believe Christ had appeared to them. The next Sunday, corresponding to the “Second Sunday of Easter”, Christ appeared again and confronted the “Doubting Thomas” in person.

This story concluded with, “Blest are those who do not see, yet believe.” And indeed, it has been quite an epic journey from the Cenacle, a hastily rented secondfloor room on the outskirts of old Jerusalem, to Our Lady of Good Voyage Shrine in South Boston, almost 2,000 years later, also on 2017’s Second Sunday of Easter.

The various steps in the Shrine’s Dedication than took place. Relics of the saints were emplaced in the altar, while the choir sang the Litany of the Saints.

The bare altar was anointed with the blest oil; the walls and pilasters of the Shrine’s building were similarly anointed by Fr. James Flavin, Episcopal Vicar of the Archdiocese. The concelebrants of the Dedication covered the altar with its cloths, emplaced the decorations, and then lit the Sanctuary.

The celebration of the Eucharist ensued – the most ancient of the Catholic rituals, and an integral part of Church Dedications. The faithful received Communion, and formally exited the Shrine in procession. Many partook of a joyful Reception afterward in the Seaport Hotel.

Southie Squirts Win Mayor’s Cup Street Hockey Championship

By Robert McGarrell and Kevin Devlin During the school vacation week, the 2017 Mayor’s Cup Street Hockey Tournament was held in Dorchester and Charlestown, and the South Boston Squirts successfully defended their title by defeating Charlestown in the championship game, 4-2. Congratulations to the boys for a great tournament.

While other kids were spending their time relaxing on vacation these boys went to work defending their title. It wasn’t easy because teams across the city were focused on knocking off the Southie Squirts to capture the title for themselves.

On opening day at Garvey Park in Dorchester, the Southie Squirts advanced from the elimination round by defeating a worthy Southie Shamrock’s team. The goal scorers were Ryan Alexander, Joe Greene, Harry Minucci and James Baker. In the quarterfinals the next day at the McGonagle Rink in Charlestown, the Southie Squirts had to face

off against a talented Charlestown team playing in front of their home crowd. In an evenly-matched tilt that went into overtime, Pat Woods scored the game-winner in dramatic

fashion, 4-3, to advance the team into the semifinals. Michael Greene came up huge with some great saves and Bobby Banks showed his toughness, coming back from

an eye injury he sustained in the opening day to anchor the defense.

In the semifinals, the Southie Squirts faced off against a formidable Dorchester team. The boys were prepared, showed their perseverance, and won, 2-1. James Baker netted the game-winner to send the team to the finals. James McFarland was a standout on defense and stifled Dorchester’s forwards. In the championship tilt, Charlestown was able to come out of the loser’s bracket to set up a revenge game but James Baker netted three goals to put those thoughts to rest. Ryan McGarrell added a couple assists and the Southie Squirts won the game.

And they brought home the trophy again.

Boston City Councilor At-Large Michael F. Flaherty Announces Candidacy for Re-Election Boston - Boston City Councilor At-Large Michael F. Flaherty has announced that he is running for re-election.

As an At-Large City Councilor, his office works diligently to address community concerns that impact each neighborhood in Boston.

“I’m proud of the work I’ve accomplished ever since coming back to the Boston City Council four years ago.

To name a few: I’ve advocated for residents who have lived in our city longer and are more familiar with our communities to have equitable access to our civil service jobs; I’ve called for innovative methods to address school safety concerns; I’ve held recurring discussions with seniors on quality of life issues,” Flaherty stated.

“Further, I’ve worked with community groups across the city on various fronts – most recently, the Community Preservation Act, an initiative that is on the next stage of implementation after gaining support from 74% of the voters in Boston last November.”

Flaherty also highlighted his role on the City Council, particularly on how it relates to passage of legislation. “As the Chair of the Committee on Government Operations, I’ve worked with the Walsh Administration, my colleagues on the Council, and advocacy groups to hold public hearings,” he said. “Recently, as Chair, I’ve held committee meetings on an array of proposed matters: housing stabilization solutions for tenants seeking protections from eviction, reducing

the use of plastic bags in our city, strengthening the Boston Residents Jobs Policy, and calling for better safety measures for construction workers.”

Flaherty noted that while much has been accomplished, there are still challenges that need to be addressed. “As I often say: We boast about having the best colleges and universities in the world, but what difference does it make it if our own kids can’t get into those schools?

Our school system needs to be given the tools and resources so that our children can compete on a global level. Further, residents across the city are looking for workforce development programs that would allow for living-wage jobs. And needless to state that the substance abuse epidemic – coupled

with violence on our streets – need long-term solutions,” he said. “I look forward to earning the confidence of voters once again to work with individuals and organizations to address these issues and more.”

As a husband, father, former Assistant District Attorney, and proud lifelong Bostonian who has served this city in a variety of roles, Boston City Councilor At-Large Michael F. Flaherty is committed to ensuring Boston continues to be a place we can all live, work, and raise a family. Good Deeds Should Be Acknowledged: Ricky Coyne Raises $5,000 for Charities.

By Kevin Devlin On Sunday, April 23, at the South Boston Special Needs and Young Adults program bowling banquet at the South Boston Yacht Club, local resident Ricky Coyne, presented this program with a check for $2,500. The other $2,500 he gave to the Saint Jude Foundation. He raised the money this year by running in his twentieth Boston Marathon. Over the years he has run in a total of sixty marathons and has raised money on numerous occasions for charity.

“It’s not the first time he gave us money,” said Harry Uhlman, well-known community activist who is involved in the special needs program as well as other worthy endeavors in South Boston. “He’s been very generous to us and other charitable organizations. He’s quite the guy and doesn’t look for the spotlight.”

Written in the card which Ricky presented to Harry Uhlman were the following words:

To Harry and the SBSK Program; Please accept this donation in memory of my mom. The work and dedication that is shown by you and all the volunteers is truly inspirational to me; as this is also a way to carry on my mom’s caring and giving spirit. Sincerely, The Coyne Family Shakespeare’s famous quote from his play “Julius Caesar” reads, “The evil that men do lives after them; The good is oft interred with their bones.” That is true in many cases, but when one thinks about Ricky Coyne and his ongoing mission to help others in the name of his beloved mother, the good is known and not forgotten.

His journey in life is truly an inspirational story that should be told, must be told so we can applaud his good deeds and keep them alive after the wind dies down.

Bowling Banquet A Blast Special Kids And Young Adults

On Sunday, April 23, the Special Kids and Young Adults program held their annual bowling banquet at the South Boston Yacht Club. The bowlers were presented with prizes and then treated to a buffet which also included their favorite ice cream dishes. It was a great event and everyone left quite happy.

Cheryl Flaherty who runs point in this initiative was pleased that the bowling season was another success and that everyone left the yacht club with smiles on their faces.

“South Boston Special Kids and Young Adults spend every Sunday afternoon from October through May bowling at the South Boston Yacht Club,” she wrote. “They take this very seriously and are very competitive and proud of their scores. More importantly they have a great time socializing with friends, volunteers, and members of the yacht club who stop by to say hello.

“As usual everyone had a great time at the banquet,” she wrote further.

“Paul Manning kicked off the event and then turned over the ceremony to the volunteers and Harry Uhlman.

The Commodore (Irish) was in full uniform and posed for pictures with the bowlers. Each bowler was presented with a SBYC hat and t-shirt as a reward for another great season.

The gang’s all here at the annual bowling banquet held at the South Boston Youth Club. The bowlers are: Julie, Kate, Sean, Kevin, Laurie, Debbie, Joe, Justin, Lisa, Jennifer, Joanne, Charles, Richie, Justin, Ashley, Suzanne, Richie, Terry, Patty, and Donna.

“This was the thirty-fifth year that we ended our season with our annual bowling banquet at the yacht club,” she concluded. “We are so thankful for the generosity of the South Boston Yacht Club and the people of South Boston who support us.”

Such a transition has taken place in Midway Studios, located in South Boston’s Fort Point neighborhood. A set of stairs descending from the Studios now provides a practical and eye-catching space for live performances – and the acoustics are unexpectedly excellent. This space is entitled “Art under the Stairs”.

Mary Driscoll is the Founder of OWLL (“On With Living and Learning, Inc.”). On Friday, April 14, she welcomed perhaps 50 guests into “Art under the Stairs” for a workshop performance consisting of original music composed and performed by the Sociedad Latina Youth Music Ambassadors. BTW, don’t let the word “youth” deceive you. The young people in the Sociedad are highly skilled and imaginative musicians. And what they do is definitely original.

Now, tastes vary, of course, and no true jazz performance is ever the same as the performances that preceded it, but this writer especially enjoyed the delicate but emphatic cool vocals by Raquel Navarro. And there were echoes of some of the titans of modern jazz – the Modern Jazz Quartet, Brubeck, Monk, and so on.

Join Us at the High School This Saturday

by Rick Winterson World War I was frequently called “The War to End All Wars” because its casualty count was (much) higher than any other war in modern history. This was a war fought mostly in static trenches – a conflict that for the first time became known for gas warfare, machine guns, armed aircraft, submarines at sea, armored combat tanks, and an immense number of civilian deaths.

We have just passed the Centennial of the start of World War I – it was formally declared by President Woodrow Wilson on Friday, April 6, 1917. It is fitting that South Boston commemorates its veterans who were killed in action during World War I – 103 of them died. Please join us this Saturday, April 29, at the High School for a memorable, solemn, and historic event.

At 10 a.m., the schoolyard will open on a World War I exhibition.

Partake of some morning refreshments; view history from a century of perspective. Then take part in the Commemoration in the High School auditorium propmptly at 11 a.m. An Invocation will be followed by a few brief remarks.

Then, the names of those World War I veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice will be read off.

The memorial ceremony will close with “Taps” and a Benediction.

This event was arranged by the South Boston World War I Commemoration Committee. We hope to see you there.

Education Secretary Peyser To Speak at NDEC’s Silver

Secretary Peyser is Governor Charlie Baker’s top advisor on education and helps shape the Commonwealth’s education reform agenda. Prior to his appointment as Secretary of Education, he was Managing Director at New Schools Venture Fund, a non-profit grant-making firm that is working to transform education in high-need urban communities.

He has also served as Chairman of the Massachusetts Board of Education, and has been Education Advisor to Governors Bill Weld, Jane Swift, and Mitt Romney.

As Executive Director of the Pioneer institute for Public Policy Research, Secretary Peyser helped to launch the Massachusetts Charter School Resource Center, which supported the development of the state’s first charter schools. Prior to joining the Pioneer Institute, Secretary Peyser had held positions at Teradyne, Inc. in Boston, an electronic test equipment manufacturer.

Ed Flynn, City Council candidate for District 2, which includes South Boston, will serve as the event’s master of ceremonies. A Navy veteran, Flynn is a lifelong resident of South Boston, where he has been deeply involved

as a youth sports coach, veterans’ advocate, and community activist. In addition to being an active Boston Public Schools parent at the Josiah Quincy School in Chinatown, Ed is a member of the Citywide Neighborhood Association, South Boston Citizen’s Association, Ward 7 Democratic Committee, and VFW Fitzgerald Post.

Ed served on active duty in the Persian Gulf on two deployments and overseas in the Navy Reserves, helping to coordinate disaster relief in Haiti. Ed and his wife, Kirsten, are raising their children, Caroline and Stephen, in South Boston.

Located in South Boston, the Notre Dame Education is a non-profit education center that has been providing goal-driven education for adults and youth since 1992. 2017 South Boston Pop Registration!

2017 South Boston Pop Warner Football & Cheerleading Registration Information South Boston Pop Warner football and cheerleading will be holding registrations on:

Every Wednesdays in May 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM inside the Murphy Skating Rink 1880 William J. Day Blvd A through E registration fees will be $150 and F players will be $100. Registration Fee decreases by $25 for each additional child This registration is for both football and cheerleading.

Players from previous years must sign up each year. No player or cheerleader is guaranteed a spot on a roster.

The maximum team size is 35 and registrations are taken on a first come, first served basis. Waiting list will be formed once we reached 35 per team.

Paperwork Needed to Participate 1) An original birth certificate (no copies). Certified copies are on-file for players who participated on the A through E teams. No Tiny Mite players’ birth certificates were certified.

2) National Registration Form can be downloaded from our website www.SBPW.com. The form has to be totally completed with both the parent and players’ signature on the backside of the form.

3) National Medical Waiver can be downloaded from our website.

The form has to be completed by a doctor or nurse practitioner and has to be dated after January 1, 2014.

Physicals prior to January 1, 2017 will not be accepted.

4) Registration fee.

5) Copy of the June 2017 report card – which will be collected in the summer.

You can still register if you do not have all items but you will need to submit all paperwork before your child will be all to practice.

National Poetry Month Is Here

elcome to National Poetry Month. April, 2017, is the 22nd National Poetry Month here in America. It is a custom we invented, which is also celebrated across our northern border in Canada.

Our own Branch Library at 646 East Broadway will host a “South Boston Neighborhood Poetry Reading” in its public room at the end of April – Saturday afternoon, April 29, from 1:30 till 3:30.

Submit and read a poem (or two) of your own, or simply come and listen. That’s your choice; you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the quality of the poems you hear. It’s free, of course, and it’s open to high schoolers and adults. Refreshments will be served.

The South Boston Arts Association (the SBAA) will be presenting this reading. The primary organizer of the reading is SBAA member Dorothy Morris, who has just published her second slim volume of poetry – “A Thousand Miles”. She published her first a few years ago. She called that collection “God Lights His Candles”. Given Dorothy’s devotion to poetry in South Boston, it’s appropriate to pen a review on her books.

A Review: Dorothy E. Morris Dorothy E. Morris is a born-andbrought-up South Bostonian. She’s also a poet – a published poet. At the Branch Library on Saturday, March 4, she presented and read from her second book of poetry, “A Thousand Miles”. A questionand-answer period followed. Dotty then signed numerous copies of her newly published second book of poems. It was quite the occasion.

In her first book of poetry, entitled “God Lights His Candles”, Dotty took us, her readers, to a lot of places – many local, many far off. There is an implied but strongly evident metaphor here, which stretches between her geographic journeyings and her

inner spiritual quest. She beckons us to go with her on both; she concludes with a spiritual septet she called “Blessings”. A particular favorite of this writer is “The Oranges of Seville”. Sam Cornish, the Poet Laureate of Boston under Mayor Menino, said in his introduction describing her first book, “ … and this is truly the poet’s journey.”

There are three things to look for in poetry, especially for the layperson or newcomer – Brevity, Sound, and Metaphor. Poems are usually short, brief. Even epic narrative poems are (much) shorter than the same stories told in prose. This “Brevity” or “shortness” leaves a lot to the imagination of the reader, as it should. As for “Sound”, the simplest poetic “Sounds” are rhymes. But there are also rhythms, repetitions, and words that “Sound” alike or unlike. Listen as you read; try reading aloud. Metaphors, the third key poetic quality, are skilled, imaginative comparisons using words, such as Shakespeare’s famous line, “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day,” Enough said. What do we find in Dotty’s second book, “A Thousand Miles”? As a first step, take in the Brevity of many of her 46 selections. Start with her first, “The Poet”; jump to the ache of the 14rh, “March Depression”, and the humor of the 19th, “Anna’s Girls”; end with “The Golden Boy” (#23) and “Jack” (#26). As for Sound, read “Recovery” (#39) aloud (to yourself – you don’t want others to think you’ve gone crazy). This poem actually rhymes. As for Metaphor, read “Romance” (#20), then put your book down for a few minutes and try to imagine a quilt made from the leftover bits of a broken heart.

You get the idea.

End your reading of “A Thousand Miles” with “Alone” (#42). But above all else, under pain of instant death, do NOT read Dotty’s book in numerical order from one end to the other. “A Thousand Miles” is too good for that kind of bureaucratic treatment.

Dorothy Morris has published two books: “God Lights His Candles”, and “A Thousand Miles”.
