Easter Weekend Well and Truly Observed

Easter weekend 2017 was a beautiful weekend, full of meaning, blessed with spring weather, and benefitting from a confluence in the Gregorian and lunar calendars. Friday, of course, was Good Friday, Saturday was the postLenten waiting period between death and Resurrection, and Easter dawned brilliantly on April 16 this year. Various calendars coincided during Easter Week, each in its own way. This Year of Our Lord 2017, St. George Cathedral, the North American Albanian Orthodox Cathedral at 521 East Broadway on Pill Hill, celebrated their Easter the same date as other Christian Churches – on the first Sunday after the first full moon after spring’s vernal equinox. the Lord “passing over” the Israelite homes in Egypt, which had been marked with lamb’s blood. It was truly a holy week that ended with Patriots Day on Monday, the 17th – a Holiday not a Holy Day, of course, but nevertheless, a nice way to end a busy weekend. Good Friday saw South Boston’s Annual Way of the Cross, which consists of 14 prayerful stops (“Stations”) that trace out Christ’s journey while he carried the Cross on the day of His death. South Boston’s observance is one of the few Good Friday outdoor processions still enacted. It was led by Rev. Burns Stanfield, Pastor of the Fourth Presbyterian Church on Dorchester Street.
