Easter Weekend Well and Truly Observed

Easter weekend 2017 was a beautiful weekend, full of meaning, blessed with spring weather, and benefitting from a confluence in the Gregorian and lunar calendars. Friday, of course, was Good Friday, Saturday was the postLenten waiting period between death and Resurrection, and Easter dawned brilliantly on April 16 this year. Various calendars coincided during Easter Week, each in its own way. This Year of Our Lord 2017, St. George Cathedral, the North American Albanian Orthodox Cathedral at 521 East Broadway on Pill Hill, celebrated their Easter the same date as other Christian Churches – on the first Sunday after the first full moon after spring’s vernal equinox. The ten-day Jewish feast of Passover began last Monday evening, April 10, a celebration of the Angel of

the Lord “passing over” the Israelite homes in Egypt, which had been marked with lamb’s blood.

It was truly a holy week that ended with Patriots Day on Monday, the 17th – a Holiday not a Holy Day, of course, but nevertheless, a nice way to end a busy weekend.

Good Friday saw South Boston’s Annual Way of the Cross, which consists of 14 prayerful stops (“Stations”) that trace out Christ’s journey while he carried the Cross on the day of His death. South Boston’s observance is one of the few Good Friday outdoor processions still enacted. It was led by Rev. Burns Stanfield, Pastor of the Fourth Presbyterian Church on Dorchester Street. The procession concluded with the 14th Station, “Christ Is Laid in the Tomb”, at the Albanian Orthodox Cathedral.

Bill Carroll, who died last week, was a loyal Southie kid who would help anybody and never looked for attention or credit. But boy, could he tell a story: a veteran and dedicated Boston firefighter who gave it his all.

I first met him when we were young boys playing sandlot football against each other at M Street Park.

He was a City Pointer and played on the City Championship South Boston Town Team with Chicken Noonan,

When we all got married and began our families, every fall 40 or 50 couples, including Billy Carroll and my crowd from the Pub, would rent a couple of buses and spend a fun weekend at Eastover Resort in the Berkshires. Every year the stories got more exaggerated, usually about who had the best team, the Southie Town Team, Mercers, Wildcats, Mullins or Strandways.

We never reached consensus.

Bill Carroll was assigned to Engine 3 in the South End and worked with and was best friends with Denny Crowe, Chris Connolly and Dennis Flynn. But Bill will always be remembered for saving the life of a little black girl in the South End when he ran into a burning, smoke-filled apartment to rescue her, and breathed air into her lungs to revive her. went across the world. It was the 1960s. America was racially divided at the time, with rioting in cities across the country.

Billy was my friend and neighbor and somebody who always had an encouraging word for me. Sitting on his front porch recently, he hollered to me walking by, “Hey Ray, Leo Mahoney said you were the second-best athlete to come out of Southie. He was the first.”

To The Editor, As I read Rick Winterson’s touching commentary ( Jack Leary Remembered) , I still remember Jack Leary whom I first met back in our younger college days at Boston State College before either of us ending up working in human services.

Jack was a great guy with a great smile and seemingly outlook on life. Over the years we stayed in touch. I kept up to date with his work at the courts helping to put shattered lives back together, giving people second changes to get their lives back together.

I still remember his wake over in West Roxbury with his closed casket and fishing rod next to it. All wakes are painful but this one was especially painful for all who knew or thought they knew him. I still think about it from time to time. He has been gone now for 10 years which seems so difficult to believe.

I remember standing in the line at his wake thinking about all the great work he had been doing at the South Boston Municipal Courthouse. That courthouse became a model in dealing with addiction programs across America thanks to Jack.

Jack›s job wasn›t just a job and anyone who knew him ,knew that. It was a mission with him.

Jack died at 57 years old with many more years of service to neighborhood young people. He recognized so well how we can all help each other i the valleys of our lives. However, most of us were not ready to hear how Jack Leary must have been suffering himself in his last few years of life. Obviously he suffered his own pain silently. Unable to reach out to others. His life seemingly overwhelmed him and few of us talk about what happened to him on that fishing trip when he left us on April 7, 2007.

We still mourn him and still wonder if any of us could have helped him had we known how the steering wheel of his life had apparently broken down.

In the end, he was like so many he helped, a shattered life too.

We are all the better for having known him and forever sad over his silent pain. Often things are never as they seem.

Jack Leary was a real person, a person with passion for life, a person who just wanted to help others. In the end, he seemingly ran out of time to help himself.

Jack Leary will always be remembered for how he lived and not how he died.

By Kevin Devlin On Thursday, April 27, at the Mary Ellen McCormack Development task force office, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., a Health Fair will be held. The task force office is located at 345 Old Colony Ave. There will be free food, raffles, giveaways, as well as blood pressure screenings and related medical advice.

“The Executive Director of the development’s task force, Carol Sullivan is the driving force behind this collaboration,” said (another) Carole Sullivan, Senior Advocate and Director of Senior Programs at the South Boston Neighborhood House (SBNH). “Carol recognizes the need for services for the elderly that have aged in place, living in the Mary Ellen Development for many years, a predominantly family development.

“Carol and I spoke about the needs of the seniors in the development,” she added. “… and looked at what was needed and what we could do together to create an environment to enhance services for seniors right in their own neighborhood.”

“As an agency, we are very interested in bringing our services to the underserved in this development,” she concluded. “Whether they are seniors or families that are new to the community or families with language barriers, the SBNH, along with other service providers working with the Boston Housing Authority (BHA) and Carol Sullivan at the task force, we are looking forward to working together for the betterment of the families.”

Boston College has also partnered with these agencies for the betterment of all “Boston College

nursing students in their Population Health clinical rotation are helping to assess the health needs of the community down to the neighborhood level,” said Donna Hudson-Bryant, Boston College faculty member at the William F. Connell School of Nursing.

“BC nursing students are here to help support this evolving partnership,” she added. “As well as learning about this nursing specialty, the students hope to help improve the health of the community. As part of that goal, the students have set up weekly free blood pressure clinics at the Mary Ellen McCormack task force office. This has helped the students meet some community members and get to know what health concerns or questions these individuals have. Being a nurse in the community focuses on supporting the strengths of a community, but is also about helping the community identify its challenges. These nurses seek to raise awareness of the health resources that are available to meet these challenges and help make connections between people and resources.

“Through conversations with stakeholders in the community, we are discovering that there is a diverse population living at Mary Ellen McCormack,” Hudson-Bryant further stated.

“There are senior citizens who are living independently, but in mixed housing without specific senior-citizen focus, may be vulnerable to becoming isolated

and disconnected from support services that might help them otherwise stay living in their own homes. There are families who have language and cultural issues that may act as a barrier to health and educational resources.

“The SBNH, the task force, and BC nursing students decided to hold a health fair,” Hudson-Bryant concluded. “…to connect people with resources around

Online Spotlight: Ralph Cox, Partner in Charge of the L Street Power Plant Project

Ralph Cox is the Partner in Charge of the L Street Power Station Project in South Boston, bearing total responsibility for seeing this development to its finish.

The Power Station Project is a joint venture between Redgate Capital Partners, which Cox co-founded, and Hilco Real Estate, who specialize in developing obsolete industrial sites.

by Rick Winterson The most significant segments of South Boston Online’s exclusive interview with Ralph Cox were his plans and statements concerning the successful development – or redevelopment, if you prefer – of the L Street Power Station.

The Station is sited at 776 Summer Street, where Summer becomes L Street; even nowadays, the site is often referred to as “the Edison”. It has been jointly purchased, so we’ll refer to the new owners and their partnership as Redgate/Hilco.

Right up front, Ralph expressed his appreciation for the input Redgate/Hilco received from the residents of South Boston. Six public meetings, report-back sessions, and charrettes had been arranged by the BPDA (the Boston Planning and Development Agency). All of these were well attended and highly productive. South Boston residents were at their best; Ralph stated that “the public process has been fantastic to date”.

During our interview, Ralph made a couple of very important commitments to South Boston. As a general statement, he said, “I want to make this the most striking development on Boston history”. He also said that the so-called “Turbine Hall” is one of the most authentic buildings he has ever

That would be right in line the almost unanimous opinions expressed by the South Boston public, after they toured that building Some of the uses Ralph is considering for the entire Redgate/ Hilco site are extremely interesting. For example, perhaps as many as 400,000 passengers disembark from liners that dock at the Black Falcon Terminal every year, often for just a few hours or half a day. What if the L Street Power Plant Project included world-class dining, local shopping, and American cultural events. It would be just a short walk for South Boston’s international guests across the Summer Street Bridge and the Reserved Channel to the Redgate/Hilco site.

He has also committed to “opening up” the Redgate/ Hilco site to Boston Harbor and to the sea. This means a lot of open space onsite, as well as a connection – maybe a “walking/bicycling” connection – to the First Street Park under construction, which leads to our miles of beaches, to Castle Island, to Mother’s Rest, and over to the Kennedy buildings and UMass Boston.

This plan fits very well with the City’s Harbor Walk and

South Boston’s inescapable identity as a maritime community. And Ralph pledges that such spaces will be open to the South Boston public and fully accessible to everyone.

Projects of the L Street Power Plant’s scope take time. Ralph pointed out that design and permitting could extend over the next 24 months. Groundbreaking therefore might not occur until 2019-2020, followed by several years of construction.

He then made a third, personal commitment: He said, “The success of the L Street Power Plant Project will be my only goal – I will see it to its finish.”

His spare time priorities include family, friends, boating, reading, and exercising. And if you’d like some more information concerning Ralph, look him up as a hockey player (Example: As a forward, he’s still a record-holding scorer in the ECAC). How’s that for a fit with South Boston? A family man, a Boston man, a New England man, and a hockey man.

That’s worth a closing comment.

Redgate has a track record of successful Boston projects that extends out to Kendall Square and Quincy Center. Hilco is known for its specific experience on adapting and reusing obsolete industrial sites.

Ralph describes their efforts on the L Street Power Plant Project as “unique” and “transformative” - exciting words for a development at the “gateway” on the Reserved Channel, between South Boston’s residential areas and its rapidly developing Waterfront.

Patriots Day 2017 Observed

Last weekend combined a major Massachusetts Holiday with the holiest of Holydays in Christendom. It was a memorable weekend at all levels. The weather smiled; spring had finally arrived for good. But there were those who worked – worked on projects that show our community as it really is.

One such working event took place at the Thomas J. Fitzgerald VFW Post #561. Despite it being the Easter Sunday weekend, along with temperatures that beckoned everyone out of doors, some 20 patriotic citizens gathered at the Fitzy Post last Saturday afternoon, April 15, to fabricate new wreaths for the signs in South Boston’s “Hero Squares”.

It is quite fitting that such a task be done over the weekend leading up to the actual Patriots Day Holiday. On the first Patriots Day, April 19, 1775, when Paul Revere’s Ride led to the Battle of Concord and Lexington, America began its fight

for independence and freedom. Fifty (50) colonial militia men gave their lives – America’s first soldiers “Killed in Action”

Nee was a World War I veteran, but for some reason, his picture has disappeared from the World War I Memorial in the High School.

We were recently reminded of his veteran’s status by a relative, John Glyn.

This leads South Boston Online to remind you that a solemn Commemoration of South Boston’s World War I veterans, who were Killed in Action, will be held in the High School auditorium on Saturday morning, April 29. The United States entered World War I in April, 1917 – 100 years ago this month. On Saturday, the 29th, you’ll see a World War I demonstration in the High School’s yard from 10 till 11 a.m. This will be followed by a brief Commemoration form 11 a.m. till approximately noon.

Easter Sunday Night, the final

Mass was said in the original Chapel of Our Lady of Good Voyage (on Northern Avenue) by Episcopal Vicar Fr. James Flavin and Fr. Joe White, once the Pastor of both St. Vincent’s Church and the Chapel. The Chapel was officially desanctified as of 12:01 a.m., Monday morning, April 17.

The occasion had some bittersweet overtones, but was basically joyful. A litany of “thank yous” was offered by the congregation

at the conclusion of the Liturgy of the Word. The new Our Lady of Good Voyage, which has been designated as a Shrine, will be dedicated this coming Saturday afternoon, April 22. As a Shrine, it will not only fulfill all of the Chapel’s prior functions, but will become the nucleus of a Seaport parish congregation, as well as serving as a place of pilgrimage.

All in all, it was quite a Holy Week in South Boston.

South Boston Catholic Academy News On April 12, 2017, the students from South Boston Catholic Academy went to St. Brigid Church where the 6th Graders wonderfully lead the students, faculty and staff from South Boston Catholic Academy, in praying and reflecting on the Stations of the Cross. The 6th Graders, also, did an excellent job making their own drawings depicting the Stations of the Cross. The Station of the Cross is a special devotional prayer that helps us to recall the tremendous love of Jesus Christ as He suffered and died for our salvation. The Stations of the Cross or the Way of the Cross, also known as Way of Sorrows, refers to a series of 14 images depicting Jesus Christ on the day of his crucifixion and accompanying prayers. The stations grew out of imitations of Via Dolorosa

in Jerusalem which is believed to be the actual path Jesus walked to Mount Calvary. The object of the stations is to help the Christian faithful to make a spiritual pilgrimage through contemplation of the Passion of Christ. It has become one

of the most popular devotions and the stations can be found in many Western Christian denominations, including Anglican, Catholic, Lutheran, Methodist and Western Orthodox parishes. As Christians we, also, believe that Easter honors

and recognizes Jesus Christ›s resurrection from the dead, and His glorious promises of eternal life for all who believe in Him. We hope everyone had a Happy and Blessed Easter!

Flynn: I Will Lead on Historic Preservation Last week, at two community meetings - the abutters meeting on M Street and at the City Point Neighborhood Association meeting - residents expressed anxiety and concern about the destruction of a beautiful home located inside the the Greenbelt Protection Overlay District on M Street in South Boston. Despite the claims by the developer proposing a multi-unit condo building in its place, the project requires approval of variances by the Zoning Board of Appeal and approval by the Parks Commission due to its location in the Greenbelt Protection Overlay District. Both the Zoning Board and Parks Commission should reject this proposal.

As the next City Councilor for District 2, I will lead on the preservation of our communities by working with residents, homeowners, community groups, historic

preservationists, and others to identify and designate historic districts to preserve their architectural character and integrity. Throughout the district, from South Boston, Bay Village, Chinatown and the South End, residents are all dealing with similar challenges of institutional expansion and overdevelopment in today’s building boom. As your City Councilor I will work to ensure that communities like South Boston, Chinatown and downtown Boston, are able to maintain their neighborhood’s character through long-term planning and historic preservation, as neighborhoods like the South End, Bay Village, Fort Point and Beacon Hill have been able to through the creation of local historic landmark districts. Working together we can preserve what’s unique and special about Boston.

Yadiel’s mom is Dolores and his sister is named Anais. He attends the Blackstone Elementary School which is located on Shawmut Avenue in the South End. The school’s principle of “Ubuntu”-

Yadiel’s favorite color is pink.

His favorite foods are chicken nuggets and pepperoni pizza. His favorite TV show is “My Big Fat Fabulous Life” which first aired on TLC in January of 2015.

The show is an American reality TV series that chronicles the life of Whitney Way Thore, who weighing 380 pounds, is determined to lose weight throughout the series. Tierney Learning Center, he does his homework and plays games such as dodge-ball, kickball, Frisbee, and four squares. He also attends art and computer classes.

“I like playing sports,” he

said. “Just today in school I caught the football with one hand. That felt great.”

If Yadiel was the President of the United States, he said that he would, “Donate clothes and money to poor people, give money to cities, and have people like and respect each other so that we can all be happy.”

Michael Kelley Applies for District 2 Boston City Council Nomination Papers Mike Kelley was at Boston City Hall this morning to apply for nomination papers for his candidacy for District 2 Boston City Council. Today was the first day to file for municipal nomination papers with the City of Boston Elections Department.

Kelley said, “I was excited to be back at City Hall to apply for nomination papers for District 2 City Councilor. I look forward to getting out in the district to collect signatures and to continue to talk with residents and hear what’s on their minds. My campaign is putting people first and I will take advantage of every opportunity to make sure that happens.”

At 9 a.m., applications for municipal nomination papers were made

available at the City of Boston Elections Department at Boston City Hall. Nomination papers will be distributed to candidates beginning May 2. District 2 council candidates are required to submit their nomination papers with 200 signatures from registered voters in the district by the end of the day on Tuesday, May 23 to ensure their name gets on the ballot. Election registrars have until June 27 to complete certification of signatures.

Ollie Student Spotlight Winner Recognizing Cara Pierce The series is about coming-ofage stories of baby animals. She also enjoys reading and is currently reading “Roller Girl” written by Victoria Jamieson, which is a book about friendship and surviving junior high school.

By Kevin Devlin On a monthly basis, the South Boston Neighborhood House, aka the Ollie, recognizes a youngster by announcing their “Student Spotlight” winner.

These young members are recognized for their good behavior for being kind, caring, and considerate, as well as being a super kid overall. The Ollie student spotlight winner for the month of March was Cara Pierce.

Cara, 9, is the daughter of Rachel and Robert Pierce. She has three older siblings, Caleb, Colm, and Carly. She also loves her black, brown and white beagle named Buddy, and her two family cats, Minnie and Callie.

Cara is in the third grade at the Oliver Hazard Perry Elementary School which is located on East Seventh Street. The school’s focus “is to provide opportunities for students to explain their thinking with evidence-based oral and written responses…to develop critical thinking skills needed for high and college.” Her favorite subject is gym and she said she’s doing great in school. Someday, she plans on being a veterinarian because she loves animals and “knows the names of every breed

At the Ollie, Cara loves hanging out with her friends in cooking class and being with her favorite Ollie staffer, Kristen DeVoy, who is the school age program director.

Cara is all smiles of dog and some that veterinarians don’t even know about.”

Cara’s favorite color is aqua blue and her favorite food is Spanish food. Her favorite athlete is Alexander Rose “Aly” Raisman. Aly is an American gymnast and two-time Olympian, a member of the 2012 “Fierce Five” and the 2016 “Final Five” United States women’s gymnastics who won their respective team competitions And, her favorite professional entertainer is Ariana GrandeButera, known as Ariana Grande, an American singer, and actress.

In the world of sports, Cara plays a little hoop and partici-

pated in the South Boston Youth Soccer League for four years.

During her leisure time, she loves watching videos as well as doing dance and gymnastic exercises because she “very flexible.”

She likes hanging out with her family and watching TV. Her favorite TV show is “Too Cute” which airs on Animal Planet.

“She’s been with us for four years now,” DeVoy said. “She’s a smart, young girl. She’s nice to everyone and has a big heart.

She cares for everyone and helps people when she can. She also attends the summer program and loves the outdoors.”

If Cara was the President of the United States, she said that, “Instead of building the wall I’d let everyone stay in America and work….and donate money to all charities and people who need it.”

Musicals Alive and Well in South Boston

by Rick Winterson Musicals are a distinctly American art form. They aren’t operas; they aren’t plays-with-music. They are, well, musicals – that’s all – but what a varied art form musicals have become. Perhaps the first really modern musical was “Showboat” by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II. And musicals have gone on from there, in the U.S. and all over the world. They seem to have lives of their own – just think of that hip hop mega-musical “Hamilton” (as well as those eye-watering ticket prices).

Recently, South Boston was treated to three famous musicals: “The Lion King”, performed by the children attending the Condon School “Little Shop of Horrors”, performed by the students at Excel (South Boston) High School.

“Godspell”, performed by the Fourth Presbyterian Church’s youth.

They were all excellently well done. As a special note, “Little Shop of Horrors” was the first (yes, the very first) production of any kind to be performed at South Boston High School in 13 years And please recall that the Boys & Girls Club put on “Annie” just a couple of months ago. Musicals in South Boston are alive and well. Let’s hope that continues.

A Greener Port of Boston

With its 7,000 jobs, the Port of Boston is the City’s 6th largest employer and contributes $4.6 billion annually to the Massachusetts economy.

More than 1,600 New England businesses depend on the Port of Boston to connect their products to the world.

During this time of unprecedented attention to climate change, Massport is re-affirming its commitment to reducing harmful emissions like nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, sulfur oxides, hydrocarbons, and carbon monoxide in the Port of Boston.

For Earth Day, we’re pleased to share this environmental progress report.

Emissions from ships are down: Sulfur content of fuel used by cargo ships at Paul W. Conley Container Terminal has dropped from 15,000ppm to 1,000ppm since 2010. And, nearly 1/3 of cruise ships use clean technologies like exhaust scrubbers and diesel particulate filters to further improve air quality.

Emissions from trucks, cranes, forklifts are down: Since 2004, all equipment at Conley Terminal has run on Ultra Low Sulfur diesel, a full six years ahead of the EPA mandate. In 2015, Conley received a national Breathe Easy Leadership Award for reducing harmful diesel emissions beyond what is required by law.

Forklifts at the Raymond L. Flynn Cruiseport terminal run on propane, not diesel. We replaced 60 old drayage trucks with newer, cleaner diesel trucks at a cost of $3 million with 26 more replacements to come. In addition, Massport is using EPA funding to retrofit five diesel-powered rubber tire gantry cranes (RTG) used to load and unload trucks and reposition containers within the yard at Conley Terminal with newer, lower emission diesel engines. Truck idling time has been reduced by 41,000 hours during the past ten years through voluntary use of auxiliary power and enforcement of idle time limits.

Green space: Massport has invested $75 million to build Thomas Butler Freight Corridor and Memorial Park which will take 400-500 trucks off of East First Street every day and provide a new 4.5 acre park and noise buffer.

The Port of Boston may be the oldest port in the nation, but when it comes to respect for the environment, we look to the future, not the past.

Tynan CC Football Clinic

By Kevin Devlin On Thursday evenings from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., football clinics are being held at the Tynan Community Center gymnasium. Youngsters aged seven through eleven are invited to attend free of charge. The clinics just started and will be conducted until mid-May. And it’s not too late to bring your child down to learn a few tips and partake in a variety of football drills.

The lad in the middle has two fingers up in support for this football clinic.

These young football enthusiasts are having a blast at the football clinic being held at the Tynan CC gym.
