At 7 p.m. on Easter Sunday evening, April 16, six days before the formal dedication of the newly built Shrine of Our Lady of Good Voyage, the final Mass will be said at the existing Our Lady of Good Voyage Chapel on Northern Avenue. All are welcome; come

and bid her “goodbye”. This closure, necessitated by South Boston’s burgeoning Seaport Square development, will be followed by the joyful dedication of the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Voyage at 51 Sleeper Street (corner of Seaport Boulevard) the next weekend.

The new Church will be dedicated by His eminence Sean Patrick Cardinal O’Malley, OFM Cap., Archbishop of Boston, on Saturday, April 22. Cardinal Sean has formally designated the newly built Our Lady of Good Voyage as a Shrine in recognition of its multiple roles in South Boston’s Seaport District. It will still serve as a Chapel for those in maritime occupations. It will also become a place of pilgrimage for the many tourists and travelers who are now part of the Waterfront’s scene. And perhaps most important, it will be a place of worship and devotion for those who’ll reside and work on the Waterfront. Overall, that could amount in total

Easter a Season of Hope

By Ray Flynn, former Mayor of Boston and U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican While in Providence, on Saturday, I was talking to a group of residents about the hey day of that city’s political history. I told them the story of how many Providence College students walked from the Catholic college to the downtown to hear U.S. Senator John F. Kennedy speak the day before he would be elected President of the United States. At the time, Kennedy had been under attack by anti- Catholic bigots who claimed that Catholic politicians shouldn’t get elected President because they would be controlled by the pope in Rome. But Catholic voters turned out in massive numbers all across the country to defend their faith and convinced American voters that they were faithful and patriotic Americans who would vote for the candidate who was best for our country. We thought that the election would finally end the Catholic bigotry in America once and for all. Kennedy’s victory was a win not just for Catholics, being the first Catholic to be elected President, but a major victory for all people who strongly believed in religious freedom.

That of course was 1960, but I’m sad to say religious intolerance and Catholic bigotry is alive and well in much of the world today.

Cowardly, Islamic State (ISIS) terrorists in Egypt chose one the most important and holiest days of the year for Christians, Palm Sunday, bombing two Coptic

Christian Churches killing at least 45 worshippers on Sunday. The Copts are the most ancient Christian people living in the Middle East. Tragically, many thousands have been massacred and driven out of the region by ISIS fanatics.

This latest siege is certain to continue to drive Copts out of their homes and add to the already refugee crisis in much of the world.

The world political community, especially the United Nations and the United States has stood by idly for the past several years and has done nothing to help protect Christians from radical ISIS terrorists in the Middle East.

The Easter season is the holiest and truly most reflective periods in the Christian faith and when our values and beliefs are foremost on our mind. I recall that attending daily religious ceremonies at the Vatican during the Easter season when I was U.S. Ambassador and listening to Pope John Paul II and even traveling to other regions in the world and meeting other prominent religious leaders. I often heard them stress the critical importance for people to demonstrate courage and hope in their lives which was truly an inspiring experience for me. From the Pope to Christian leaders in Egypt, Turkey, Syria, the Ukraine, and Bosnia along with world diplomats, I heard it repeatedly stressed that prayer was important, but participation in civic affairs was critical to the political and economic stability in the world. I have to admit that since returning home to America, I constantly think about those moving messages and experiences. But I also think about why so many good people of faith and strong religious beliefs pretty much ignore those same messages that I heard so clearly and often from these world religious leaders. Their message was consequential and unmistakeable, but rarely reported in the American press. Pope John Paul II had experienced the disaster of Hitler’s Nazi troops in his native Poland and than immediately after that the ruthless anti- God commu-

nist dictator Josef Stalin that his people had to live with that persecution most of his early life. I also got to know and listen to all of the Christian Orthodox Patriarch’s from Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople to Patriarch Krill I of Moscow to Patriarch Irine of Serbia as well as many Jewish religious leaders from throughout the Middle East, Europe and Israel. I would talk to them about political vigilance and even worked with them closely when The United States Government supported full diplomatic relations between the State of Israel and The Holy See. Obviously the horrors of Christian and Jewish brutality were major factors in there history.

But the shocking news on Sunday about the brutal bombing which massacred at least 45 Christians - while attending Palm Sunday Mass in two Coptic churches in Egypt and which ISIS terrorists claimed responsibility for- along with other horrendous world events recently like the deadly chemical bombings of children in Syria, rapes of young girls, bombings of churches and torture of Catholics, I am been deeply concerned about the silence in America. Our political parties seem more concerned about “gotcha politics” than working to address this “modern day genocide against Christians,” and not working for the common good and world stability.

Yes, I learned that informed and committed people are key to our nation’s and world’s safety.

I’ve witnessed over the years that experienced and professional diplomats, dedicated military and U.S. Intelligence officials are vital, but its the responsibility of American voters to put competent patriotic public officials in positions of trust and authority.

But while attending Mass on Saturday afternoon and listening to Fr. Robert Casey at St Augustine’ Cemetery Chapel in South Boston, we heard him remind us about our Catholic values and traditions. While we must not

let political events and division take our attention away from our faith, we must also not let special interest groups intimidate us from not standing up for what we believe, whether it’s here in Boston or in Egypt.

We were taught by our parents and Church that Easter is the “Season of Hope.” But it’s also the Season of Faith. It’s time for people of faith and love to come together and reflect on our values and religious beliefs and demand that they be reflected in our nation’s public policies. We constantly see partisan ideologues angrily sniping at each other on TV, while the national media inflames this division.

But getting back to my conversations with many Rhode Island people, including its Attorney General Peter Kilmartin, U.S. Congressman Jim Langevin, Mayor of Providence Jorge Elorza and so many other state and local officials, that attended a neighborhood tribute to respected Irish-American patriot and restaurant owner Patrick Griffin who I worked side by side with for peace and justice in Northern Ireland years back, when I said, “why do we have to listen to partisan political operatives give us their version of world events, while you live them?” It’s really time, for decent people of goodwill to get involved and be “ faithful citizens” as I heard Pope John Paul II so often say.

Has our country changed that much that the traditional values of faith and family in which our country was founded upon are on no longer important? We owe it to our children and our country to speak out, not in an angry, self serving and partisan way, but with a united and unafraid voice that promotes the “common good” for all Americans, not just the elite and powerful.

Maybe this Easter season can be is a season to hope again. My South Boston neighbors certainly heard Fr Casey’s inspiring Palm Sunday homily about hope yesterday. I was inspired and encouraged by it.

Easter all over South Boston. A carefully negotiated agreement between the Archdiocese and the Seaport Square developers, John Hynes III prominent among them, assured the construction of a new space for worship that combined the original mission of Our Lady of Good Voyage Chapel with the new roles of a Catholic Church on the South Boston Waterfront.

As mentioned, this has now been designated a Shrine – The Shrine of Our Lady of Good Voyage. It’s the first – yes, the first – new Catholic Church built in Boston since St. John Chrysostom in West Roxbury 65 years ago.

A picture is worth a thousand words, so it’s said. Please

take a look at the photographs to get a better idea of the new Shrine than mere words could convey. The maritime theme has been carefully maintained in the new Church, including its superstructure that evokes the hull of a wooden ship. The marble masonry comes from Turkey, Italy, and Spain, some of the woodwork from Latin America. There are Medieval elements inside. Most affecting of all, the Shrine’s interior has been “assembled” (if that’s the right word) from the most beautiful furnishings of Boston’s Catholic Churches that were closed in recent years.

Hugely Successful 2017 “Ollie” Auction

First, a definition for the newer reader of South Boston Online.

The term “Ollie” is an affectionate nickname of the South Boston Neighborhood House at H and Sixth. Why “Ollie”? Because the founder of the Neighborhood House in 1901 was named Olivia “Ollie” James. For your information, the motto of the “Ollie” – the South Boston Neighborhood House – is, “The House Is Where the Heart Is.” Last Friday evening, the South Boston Neighborhood House held its 2017 30th Annual Benefit & Auction. It was an outstanding success, as indicated by the enthusiastic, non-stop buzz permeating the Harborview Ballroom in the Seaport World Trade Center from start to finish. Perhaps as many as 500 attendees took part in this gala event.

Well-deserved Awards were conferred: Arthur Murray, a longstanding “Ollie” booster, received the Amy K. Murray “Angel” Award. This Award was named for Arthur’s still missed daughter, a key “Ollie” staff member until her untimely death. The Joseph “Dodo” Nee “Champion” Award went to the Nee family for their ongoing support of the Neighborhood House. Both of these Awards had just been newly named.

The auctions, both live and silent, featured many truly elegant items. Tom Tinlin showed his skills as the evening’s Auctioneer by garnering successful bids from the excited crowd. He auctioned off twelve “live” items. Perhaps the most unusual and notable of these was a brace of orchestra seat tickets to the hip hop musical “Hamilton” at the Rodgers on Broadway, which includes a weekend stay in New York City at the Ritz Carlton across from Central Park.

Youth/Adult Dialogue Night a Great Success A record crowd turned out for the latest in the series of the “Let’s Talk – Youth/Adult Dialogues” hosted by the South Boston Community Health Center’s Youth Ambassadors. Presented at the Boston Center for the Arts Cyclorama in partnership with Medicine Wheel Production’s Hand in Hand Exhibit, the evening gave youth from all over South Boston an opportunity to have important conversations about violence prevention with Boston Police

officers from area C-6 and C-4, along with other law enforcement officials. Boston Police Superintendent Randall J. Halstead – Night Commander offered opening remarks and an inspiring personal story.

Attendees also enjoyed viewing the Hand in Hand Exhibit which showcased - through photography, poems and casting of hands - the inspiring partnerships formed between youth and law enforcement officials while creating this inspiring art display.

One Boston Day: Thomas J. Fitzgerald Post

On April 15, 2017, at 1:00pm, members and volunteers at the Thomas J. Fitzgerald Post #561 (Veterans of Foreign Wars) will meet at the post and rebuild ceremonial wreaths that will be placed at many Hero Squares throughout South Boston. Each year, the Fitzgerald Post receives a list from the City of Boston (Department of Veterans Services) of Hero Squares, where we swap out the old wreaths and ensure proper respect is given to that particular veteran at that Hero Square.

The public is cordially invited to join members at the post on Saturday at 1:00pm, to help assemble the wreaths. Coffee and pastry will be provided. The Thomas J. Jack Leary Remembered

by Rick Winterson Jack Leary died ten years ago, on April 7, 2007, at age 57. He had a short life, but a compassionate and productive one.

Last Friday, April 7, a Memorial Mass was said in his memory.

To those who had just met him, Jack Leary appeared to be an unassuming man, until they got to know his ready laugh, his incredible internal, energy, and his devotion to effective use of the court system to help those who were addicted or in recovery. Beginning in the mid1990s, when South Boston’s drugrelated teen suicide epidemic was raging, the South Boston Municipal Courthouse began developing a new approach toward handling people caught in the grip of addiction and substance abuse problems. Indeed, our Courthouse became a model for other addiction programs all across the nation.

One key element of this new approach was offering substance abusers the option to get themselves into recovery, instead of being sentenced to prison. This meant administering such a program after the judges and lawyers had finished

their jobs. That’s where Jack came in. Getting them into, and keeping substance abusers in recovery programs – a kind of productive probation, really – were Jack’s jobs. He took these responsibilities very seriously. It was way more than a job to him; it was Jack’s mission in life.

And he performed that mission supremely well. Jack himself was not an addict, or a substance abuser in any way, but he had an innate empathy with those so afflicted. He understood that addiction is an all-encompassing disease – physical, mental, and

spiritual. Jack intuitively knew that treatment, not imprisonment, was the only road to recovery.

It was to recall this that we all gathered in Jack’s memory last Friday evening. We sang “Amazing Grace” – not well, but we all sang it anyhow. Fr. Joe White spoke of how “full of life” Jack was. And how Jack gave those in recovery their lives back again. During the collation afterward, it was evident how fresh Jack’s memory remained among those who attended his Tenth Anniversary Mass.

It pays to be optimistic.

There are two additional South Boston names that have been found. The first waslocated by Mary Ryan, the Chair of the South Boston World War I Commemoration Committee: CURRAN, Patrick NEE, Peter J. Perhaps because he went to school over there, Patrick Curran’s name was inscribed on a West Roxbury memorial, as well as being listed among South Boston’s World War I casualties. Peter J. Nee actually has a wreathed “Hero’s Square” (see photo) at the Intersection of E Street and West Broadway.

We aren’t sure why their names and pictures don’t appear on the Memorial Board in the High School (now “Excel”), but we received a call from John Glyn, informing us that Peter J. Nee was his cousin and has his name on the E Street/ West Broadway intersection. John once worked at the High School and also told us that Nee’s photo used to be on the Memorial.

There are two empty spots on the High School Memorial Board, where pictures were once hung – the right and left lower corners. Maybe that’s where the two of them originally were located.

Representative Collins Hosting Park Serve Day at Farragut Park State Representative Nick Collins plans to host a Park Serve day on Saturday April 29th at Farragut Park from 9am to 12pm. The annual event is sponsored in partnership with the Department of Conservation and Recreation.

Many groups have already signed up to participate, including South Boston Little League, South Boston Pop Warner, South Boston Girls’ Softball, and South Boston Youth Hockey.

Statewide there will be more than 30 similar park cleanups, with volunteers from all over the Commonwealth participating.

“It’s great that the kids in the program learn that these parks are theirs. Learning to take ownership of their community and help maintain the neighborhood is an important part of their growth” said Danny Ferrara, President of South Boston Pop Warner.

By Kevin Devlin He likes playing floor hockey after school in the Tynan Community Center gymnasium. He enjoys being involved in the flag football league and the instructional hoop leagues.

He participates in the various clinics held in the Tynan gym such as the football clinics held by local coaches.

And he loves playing basketball there. His name is Mullen Byrne.

Mullen, 11, is the son of Kenny Byrne. His aunt is “Auntie Theresa” and he has two uncles, Joseph and Davie Byrne. He has a family fish named Nemo. Mullen attends the Joseph P. Tynan Elementary School which is located on East Fourth Street. In addition to science, physical education, dance, and vocal music, the school has City Stage which is a theater arts program providing further enrich-

ment for all students. The school also has a literature based program and Reading Street for literacy.

Mullen is doing well in school but knows he can do better. His favorite subject is reading. Someday, if he doesn’t make it into the National Basketball Association as a star player, he will pursue a career in law.

Mullen’s favorite color is blue.

His favorite pizza is from Olympic Pizza on East Broadway. His favorite TV show is “Adventure Time.” This animated story featured on Cartoon Network is about a human boy named Finn and his adopted brother and best friend Jake the Dog who protect the citizens of the Land of Ooo from foes of various shapes and sizes. His favorite professional athletes are Celtics star guard, Isaiah Thomas, Patriots star wide receiver, Julian Edelman, Red Sox newly-acquired star pitcher, Chris Sale, and Alex Ovechkin, sensational player for the Washington Capitals in the NHL. Mullen has played basketball since

he was six years old. He began in the Gate of Heaven CYO instructional league and this past season was on the 4th/5th grade travel team coached

by Scott Bell. He really likes the competition and scoring hoops. He also has played in the South Boston Pop Warner Football League for the past six seasons. He is used as a defensive end and tight end and loves tackling his opponents.

In his leisure time, if he’s not at the Tynan gym engaged in a variety of activities, Mullen journeys down to the South Boston Boxing Club located which is located at the Curley Community Center. At the boxing club, he gladly accepts boxing tips from Jimmy “Jimbo” Curran. He fought in the recent Evacuation Day boxing event held at Peter Welch’s Gym and loved the cheering crowd.

Mullen likes reading and is currently reading “Wonder.” This

children’s book was first published in 2012 by Raquel Jaramillo under the pen name of R.J. Palacio. Mullen reads at least fortyfive minutes of day after school.

“We have to read every day at home after school,” he said. “If I don’t I have to answer to my teachers in school and get in trouble. I make sure I do my homework every night because my dad is strict about my schoolwork and if I don’t do it…I can’t go to the Tynan gym after school. I don’t want to miss that.”

Studying in the daytime at the Tynan and then walking downstairs after school to enjoy the physical activities being provided by the Tynan Community Center staff is just what the doctor ordered.

It gives Mullen the opportunity to learn, stay busy, and have fun.

Hawkes win again Capture ninth consecutive Tynan volleyball league title

By Kevin Devlin On Thursday evening, April 6, at the Tynan Community Center gymnasium, the defending champions, the Hawkes Club, defeated the Butler Club in five games, to capture the 2017 Tynan Community Center co-ed volleyball league championship. And in doing so, they won their ninth consecutive league title. Calling this a dynasty in our midst would be an understatement.

The Butler Club (4-10) which finished fourth in the regular season, had to survive in the opening round against the first place team, the Turner Club (13-1), and they did just that, upsetting this season’s presumed champion. The defending champs, the Hawkes Club (8-6) made their ninth consecutive appearance in the finals a reality by beating the second place club, the Long Club (9-5) in what turned out to be in a fiercely, competitive matchup. The championship wasn’t determined until the end of the final game as both teams brought their “A” games to the gym. “The defending champs took on their opponent in a thriller,” said Kathy Davis, the Tynan CC program supervisor. “It

was a three out of five series with plenty of action. The Hawkes Club took the first game, 21-17. The Butler Club came back to take the second game by the score of 21-17.

“The third game displayed some great volleys by both teams and the Hawkes Club came out on top, winning 21-14,” Davis added. “The fourth game, a very close match, proved to be the best, with the Butler Club pulling away with the win, 21-17. In the deciding game, the defending champs came out strong to defend their title, taking the victory and championship for the 2016-17 season.”

Kellie Hawkes, speaking on behalf of her teammates, was overjoyed that the team won again.

“We started the season with a couple of new players,” said Hawkes. “Over the previous nine seasons we only lost about four or five games and this season we finished with our worst regular season record “We didn’t know what to expect but really didn’t think we were going to win this year,” she added.

“The other teams in the league have improved so much so we just worked hard and worked together.
