lease reserve this coming Tuesday evening, April 3, between 6 and 8 p.m.

The occasion is Paraclete’s 2018 Annual Reception – certainly a guaranteed harbinger of Spring, if there ever was one. The locale will be at the Boston College High School, just off Morrissey

Boulevard at #150. The honorees in a brief program will be the Lynches - the Hon. Stephen Lynch and Mrs. Margaret Lynch. There’s no need to tell you why they are being honored. The Lynches typify all that is good, straightforward, and memorable about South Boston.

The evening will be a time to celebrate Paraclete as well. Sample the drinks and pay particular attention to the rich and tasteful hors d’oeuvres you’ll be served. If you prefer, come straight from work. There will be music, and entertainment, and raffles and auctions galore, with some special and luxurious items for you to consider. How about five-star gourmet dining at Menton, with a lunch for 10 at the chef’s table? Or a “Cultural Night on the Town” with Boston’s Arts Commissioner, Julie Burros? Would you want to watch the Celts play the Nets on April 11 from the prestigious Cross Insurance Boardroom? These are just three Continued on Page 3

he ASCD held their annual conference called “Empower 18” at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center this past week, hosting thousands of educators from around the nation. Celebrating its seventy-fifth year, the organization has a multi-tiered mission to aid in the professional development of educators,

promote curriculum development, healthy school environments, and advocate for educational equity. The sheer quantity and quality of the presenters, and the vast number of educational vendors, dominated the convention center for three days. Herein I hope to give you a snapshot to reveal the importance of this organization to the world of K-12 education.

Marching Together

I

t was a scene similar to one Boston’s seen before.

This past weekend, on a cold Saturday morning, tens of thousands of people gathered to kick off another march demanding national change. Except this time, we gathered at Madison Park Vocational High School in Roxbury, ready to start our route to the Boston Common. And this march was even more remarkable, because it had been created and organized by our students.

In fact, all throughout our nation, our young people are leading the charge and fighting for stricter gun control laws. At Boston’s March for Our Lives, the organization, the message, the passion -- it started with our students, and our young people.

It’s hard to believe it’s been just over 5 weeks since the tragedy at Parkland. Here we were today, over 50,000 people strong at the Boston Common, demanding “enough is enough”. We were joined by millions of people marching at 140 sibling marches across the world. Students held signs saying, “The time is now”, “Protect kids not guns”, and “Books not bullets”.

They chanted in unison, “This is what

democracy looks like”. As Mayor, and as a fellow American, I was inspired by their words and their determination to be heard. I know I wasn’t the only one.

The national conversation on gun control has had a profound effect on our students. Last week, I met some of the Parkland survivors at the Institute of Politics at Harvard. They were on the road, spreading their message and helping other students take action in their own communities.

They met with Boston and Cambridge high school students where they had honest and productive discussions on what to do about gun control.

It was incredible: these students were taking on a major policy issue head on, while too many members of Congress choose to ignore it.

And we know that gun control works -- as our state has proven.

Massachusetts has the lowest gun death rate in the country. A recent Boston Globe study found that if each state had gun control laws similar to ours, 27,000 lives may have been saved.

In Massachusetts, our representatives in Washington are working to make our communities safer.

Just this month, Commissioner Evans and I stood with Senator Markey as he introduced federal gun safety legislation that would incentivize states to adopt gun licensing standards similar to those

in Massachusetts. It’s common sense gun reform, and creates safe and sensible policies for owning and buying guns.

In Boston, we are building safer communities every day. Together with the Boston Police Department, we host gun buyback programs, mentor teens who may be at risk, and have hosted several regional summits with cities and towns on how to improve gun safety. We’re sharing strategies and building relationships. We’re partnering with researchers and safety advocates, like Everytown for Gun Safety and Arms With Ethics.

We’re also engaging responsible gun owners. Anyone who says cities and towns are too divided to find common ground on gun policy is mistaken. We’re bridging divides between the different cultures and views we have across town, city, and state lines. If we can do this, so can the federal government.

But we know what we do in Boston, and what we do in Massachusetts, isn’t enough. Without the partnership of cities, states across the U.S., and the federal government,

true change cannot happen. That’s why marches like Saturday’s are so important. Offering prayers to communities who have faced tragedy is our first action, but it can’t be our last. Protecting our people and communities must be our number one priority, always. The world keeps turning, but it doesn’t mean we just move on to the next story of the day.

We can’t let this happen any longer.

This time, it’s going to be hard for our nation to forget -- because our students will make sure we won’t.

Our hope for our young people is that they find a cause they are passionate about -- something that drives them to call for change. I couldn’t be more proud of our students here in Boston, and the mobilized students all across the country.

They weren’t just marching for themselves, but for all the innocent victims of gun violence whose voices have been silenced.

They were marching for a brighter and safer future for everyone. I know they will continue to march and demand change for as long as it takes. And rest assured, Boston will be marching right beside them.

Paraclete’s Board numbers 16; its Host Committee, 19. Most are from South Boston; all are dedicated to Paraclete and to our neighborhood.

Make it a point to say hello to the Reception’s Honorary Co-Chairs, who are a trio of prominent local officials – newly elected District 2 City Councilor Ed Flynn, City of Boston Mayor Marty Walsh (if his calendar allows), and Mass State Auditor Suzanne Bump. Suzanne was the wife of Paul McDevitt, who did so much for Paraclete before his untimely passing, and for whom the Paraclete building is named.

As mentioned, the Paraclete’s 2018 Founders’ Award will be conferred upon Steve and Margaret Lynch. Margaret is the Director of Marketing and Development at the South Boston Community Health Center, which serves all of South Boston with a variety of medical care and services. In addition, Margaret is well known around here for her numerous volunteer involvements, especially with the Gavin Foundation, where she is a very active Board member. Steve is in his 17th year as the Congressman for the Ninth

Massachusetts House District. His extensive record includes numerous “boots on the ground” trips to zones of U.S. conflict in Vietnam and the Middle East. This writer once interviewed Steve by phone from the African nation of Chad, where he had gone to personally view the humanitarian crisis in South Sudan.

And Steve is also a loyal supporter of U.S. combat veterans’ causes.

The word “Paraclete” is from Ancient Greek. In those days, it typically meant a helper, an advocate, or simply one who comforted someone else who had been afflicted with an unfortunate fate. Actually, even though words change through the ages, those are still pretty accurate ways in which “Paraclete” is used, even nowadays in the 21st Century. And here’s why: South Boston’s Paraclete is an out-of-school educational enrichment program. It offers students from the 4th to the 8th grades varied academic support – homework and tutoring assistance, enrichment classes, and education-based field trips to boost achievement. Twenty years ago in 1997, Paraclete was founded by two urban educators, Sr. Ann Fox and Barry T. Hynes, still known as the “Founders”. Since that time, approximately 1,200 Bostonbased students have found their educational inspiration at Paraclete.

Scholarship Reminder Joseph A. McCarthy passed away in 2009. Joe was a veteran, a sports fan, a union man, a 40-year employee of Edison, and a lifelong student of America’s Irish heritage.

In his memory, his family set up the Joseph A. McCarthy Scholarship Fund, which is now entering its tenth year. But there is still time – until the April 15 deadline – to apply for this year’s awards.

There are three scholarships to be awarded in 2018, totaling $4,500.

There are a few requirements necessary to apply for a McCarthy Scholarship: 1.- You must be a Massachusetts resident.

2.- You must be planning to attend an accredited college or technical school 3.- You are required to submit an essay (of at least 500 words, on or before April 15) about how Irish-Americans have contributed to our society.

Anyone from Massachusetts planning on education after high school is eligible to submit an essay.

Twenty-seven (27) scholarships have been awarded over the last nine years, nine of them to students from South Boston.

And be sure to start thinking about next year. That will be the Tenth Anniversary of the McCarthy Scholarships - $10,000 (!) in total scholarships will be awarded in 2019.

SING! An Extravaganza at the Fourth

by Rick Winterson Last weekend saw two performances of SING!, that quintessential musical. It was presented by The Soul Possibilities Programs of the Fourth Presbyterian Church last Friday and Saturday evenings. Now, this is a young peoples’ presentation, from bimps just past toddling on up to young adults, anchored by Director/Pianist Rev. Burns Stanfield, Producer Rev. Katie Cole, Choreographer Rene Martin, and Paul Eastman of Thomas Park as Papa Noodleman. The numbers counted – SING! had a cast of 55, along with 26 supporting and enthusiastic parents. The stage in the sanctuary of the Fourth absolutely jumped during the ensemble’s dance numbers. The choruses of young voices were clear and refreshing; the solos were all well performed. The audience filled the nave of the church shoulder-to-shoulder, applauding all the way. And the show, along with the high energies of every performer, lasted 90 full minutes without an intermission. Whew! Great show.

Artists for Humanity to Complete Expansion in 2018

The expansion project at Artists for Humanity’s EpiCenter (A and Second) has been underway since mid-July last year. The new structure and accompanying renovations, photographed here on the first evening of spring, are expected to be complete in October of this year. And of course, Susan Rodgerson, the Founder/Executive Director of Artists for Humanity, is planning a huge (yes, huge!) celebration. Watch for it.

In rounded numbers, Artists for Humanity now provides exposure to the arts and employment each year for around 300 teen-aged young people from Boston. This expansion will allow them to take on 500 or so in the near future. And the EpiCenter brings a truly benign environmental presence to South Boston. It was the first building in Boston to earn a “Leeds Platinum” rating – the highest rating there is!

From the cogent opening remarks of Dr. Tommy Chang, Superintendent of the Boston Schools, to the kind words of Dr. Jill Biden, from the inspirational tone of General Colin Powell, to the rapt emotions of educator evangelist Manny Scott; the level of excitement generated by the keynote speakers in the audience was something to behold.

Dr. Chang interjected some humor into his opening remarks while thanking Dr. Biden and her husband Joe Biden, for hanging tough and supporting education. Chang quipped: “Please tell your husband he doesn’t have to act like a tough guy. Because we know he’s a tough guy.” Dr. Biden, who is an educator herself, said of her colleagues in her opening remarks: “Because of you... someone is a little kinder, because you showed him what that meant. Someone is a little braver because you showed her how. Thank you for lifting up the minds and hearts of our communities.”

The extent to which Americans truly believe that educators hard work is worthy, despite the how our society often trivializes their contributions, is starting to be realized again in the wake of recent national tragedies. Throughout the conference the universal horror at the obscene notion of teachers carrying guns into classrooms was recognizedbut with a quiet, respectful tone that America has largely lost. These are the people who know how schools should operate, not special interest groups looking to score points in the media.

The focus of this conference was on the whole child, on the tried and true values of education, and the latest developments in curriculum, technology, and culture.

Besides the genuinely inspirational aspect of the conference, there was a lot of content related and material displayed.

The production values were off the charts with roving video cameras, interviews, demonstrations, book signings and casual group get togethers. The educators flowed smoothly through over 125 separate educational presentations in conference rooms around BCEC. On the main floor hundreds of educational vendors eagerly demonstrated their products and services, with everything from computer aided programs to traditional books, STEM lab products, databases and learning tools. The special activities planned for the educators were padded with copious amounts of really useful swag, free educational

materials, and decent amenities.

This was clearly a well planned and executed convention, designed to enrich and enliven the educators.

Beyond the dazzle of this exhibition was the civilized behavior and completely friendly manner of relations among the participants. School teachers, principals, planners, coaches, and employees at our K-12 schools must be one of the most under-appreciated groups of working citizens in this nation. They didn’t merely talk about their concern for their students, but embodied this concern throughout the conference. When the ASCD made their conference theme empowerment of the whole child, they brought together a series of sophisticated lectures and demonstrations that when taken together, reveal the complexity of the teacher’s jobs in creating an educational environment that reaches all children, regardless of their cultural backgrounds or learning abilities.

The “whole child” approach transcends teaching students their subject matters so they can achieve academic excellence, by attending to the student’s life issues. The tenets of the whole child approach include: teaching and learning, transformational leadership, global engagement, poverty and equity, and redefining student success.

The approach places heavy emphasis upon the emotional development and cultural background of the child. It stresses the necessity of educators today to be informed and capable of dealing with a host of complex social issues, and the ability to truly empathize with their students. The individual workshops were often designed to give educators an opportunity to learn by performing activities, as well as through traditional presentations.

Anyone who has been following education in the past decade knows how popular STEM programs (Science Technology Engineering Math), have become, but I was glad to see this conference as a bit of a push back on the emphasis of STEM. This conference spoke directly to the core of learning, the development of the child to adulthood, and the very significant roles that educators play in transforming the lives of the children. In an age when public education is often treated in the press with cynical disinterest, the very real value of education to maintain peaceful and cultured lives cannot be underestimated. The “take away” from

this kind of conference was definitely to see the fascinating complexity of the way lives touched by education.

The relationships between educators and their students is expressed in the level of concern educators maintain in order to solve difficult problems and use education as a catalyst

to transform the lives of others.

ACES: Educators Present on Child Abuse

O

ne of the more complex and widespread problems in today’s educational environment is how to educate students who are dealing with Adverse Child Experiences, commonly called ACEs. With the ASCD Conference emphasis upon educating the whole child, a group of educators from South Central Pennsylvania came prepared to the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center with an indepth presentation for educators on how to detect, evaluate, and respond to the problem of ACEs. Their presentation was entitled: “ACEs Paradigm Shift in How the School Community Can Address the Whole Child.”

The presenters were Ellen G. Smith MD., School Counselor, Meg Riley M.ED, MMS, and Jeannette Fodness, Teacher and Instructional Coach M.Ed, who

Utilizing an interesting round-robin approach to the presentation, they led a group of educators through some pretty complex, and heavy emotional material.

This, as one might imagine, is not an easy subject to talk

about. The abuse of children is not only wide spread, involves a level of intense pain for the victims, and the after effects are often heart breaking for educators to witness. Estimates vary, but in the United States, anywhere from 25% to 52% of children in our schools have been the victim of child abuse- whether emotional, physical or sexual abuse, the mark that abuse leaves on the lives of children in development can seem indelible.

The paradigm shift in the title of the presentation perhaps emphasizes a new way of gathering forces for educators to assist students who may have suffered abuse. It has fallen mostly to educators to find solutions to these seemingly intractable problems, often without significant resources from f inancia lly strapped school districts.

Many who are not familiar with the great positive social impact of early education in American society often have no idea about this part of the contemporary educational mission. Complex as this subject is, the presenters provided a concise road map for educators to follow, and a bevy of resources for participants to pursue further studies. How to handle events when a child recounts having witnessed abusive violence, or reveals that they themselves have been abused, is a complex issue.

Child abuse cuts across all kinds of cultural and societal norms, and often involves legal and societal

problems as well. Even more difficult is when the child clearly has been abused, and doesn’t recall the abuse, but is still displaying behaviors in the classroom that indicate abuse has occurred.

Keep in mind that teachers are often dealing with large classes of students in which multiple children may exist with these problems.

The social lives of children are complicated by their status in society, and the limitations of their abilities to communicate problems, the nature of which they might not even fully grasp. The other part of the equation- how family members will respond to inquiries about suspected abuse- opens a whole other level of difficulty for teachers, guidance counselors a nd school psychologists.

In the classroom teachers are trained now to detect signs of child abuse, exhibited through symptoms within the educational environment, and how to assist students who have suffered abuse at home or in society at large. This presentation emphasized that as the front line of defense for children, educators need not only the skills of teachers, but increasingly also skills associated with social workers.

It was emphasized that studies reveal that children who do not receive help in recovering from these experiences may go on to lead very hard lives as adults- besides presenting a difficult situation in the educational environment by disrupting schooling that makes

Educators Present... it difficult for them, and others to learn. It was demonstrated that the learning impairment that stems from abuse has far reaching implications in the lives of abused children. The workshop showed what educators need to know to spot the various signs of childhood trauma, and how to provide some measure of relief or mitigation of the adverse experiences so that the children can develop and grow in trusting relations with others. People in the workshop immediately responded to the suggestion that some students with problems stemming from abuse might thrive on the chaos that is created by their behaviors, and these children often aren’t even aware of the dynamic, or origin of their behaviors.

The presenters emphasized the developmental skills needed to bring to children who have been abused to solve their problems are: trust, empathy, coping, safety, being responsive, and learning selfregulation and self-advocacy. They detailed ways that educational professionals need to approach the child, how to engage the community around the child to find out what has happened, in order to formulate a plan. This lead to a discussion on the role of mindfulness in the process of helping children suffering from abuse. There was another discussion about how educators in leadership roles can bring the level of their staff performance up on this issue- to raise awareness, and effectively utilize relationships across the school to spot and help children at risk.

The role of parents and family continued throughout as a theme, with the realization that solving the problem is many times connected to removing the abuser from contact with the child, or removing the child from abusive situations at home.

This puts the school in a difficult relationship with the family, and involves complex negotiations.

Interestingly, the presenters also went to great lengths to show that educators themselves may harbor

latent emotions or experiences from their own past ACEs that could trigger reactions when they encounter students who have been abused. They emphasized that it may seem obvious that trauma impairs learning, (and showed medical evidence of this), but the manifestation of trauma is not so simple to evaluate as it ranges in different kinds of behaviors, from being overtly shy- to being a bully or simply acting out.

All of these may be clues to an underlying problem of abuse, but the educator has to discover if this is so by relating to the child.

The emphasis of moving from “what’s wrong with you” to “what happened to you” was stressedand that educators need to gain trust of the child to help them.

Here it was emphasized that children who get help don’t have to live a life hindered by disorders, especially if they receive early intervention. The presenters stressed that educators need to know about body language, cultural differences in reactions to trauma or abuse, and ways to allow children to open up to them in order to find out the source of the problem. There are so many kinds of adverse child experiences, not all of them so intentional or easy to pin point. Perhaps a parent has died, or is experiencing PTSD upon returning from warfare. Maybe the child is being bullied by someone in the neighborhood, or they are suffering from emotional or sexual abuse perpetrated by a relative.

Sometimes children become pawns in an emotional battle during divorce or separation. The ranges of abuse or trauma children suffer, and associated manifestations in their behavior were discussed in c on s id e r a ble detail.

Of course the positive side after discussing the details of spotting abuse and the impact upon children, is the educator’s role as restorative agents, and results that can be achieved for children who receive help from trained professionals. Knowing how to set up a path of discovery for the child, through actions and

activity, to make them see outside of their situation long enough to gain insight and find healing through a series of strategies was presented. In this sense the presenters stressed developing school wide policies and procedures that impact: “achievement, performance and behavior.”

The role of restorative justice in education was touched upon in its relation to addressing child abuse.

While this workshop did not focus on protocols for developing plans of therapy or counseling for children, it laid out a road map of signs and signals for educators, that would assist them in understanding children at risk in the community.

With a difficult subject at hand, the presenter’s tailored their material carefully and presented it with clarity to engage their audience into action. The conclusion is that it is often teachers who make the breakthrough for students who have suffered abuse, and they do so by learning to see the whole child in the educational process. On the side bar are some resources related to the workshop.

“Misremembered” A Must-See

by Rick Winterson Just the word “Misremembered”, the name of the current exhibition at the FPAC Gallery begs one to drop in for a viewing. “FPAC” stands for Fort Point Arts Community. Their Gallery is at 300 Summer Street, lower level; viewing hours are TUE-FRI, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“Misremembered” is a trochaicsounding word that refers to the memories of the past, remembered (often) through translucent time, which (gently) shapes these memories into emotions as well as the actual, factual events.

Three artists are taking part in the “Misremembered” exhibition: Katei Dye, in sculptures of cast glass as her medium; Amanda Kidd Schall, monotypes/mixed media prints; and Brittany Severance, archival inkjet prints from photographs.

The “Misremembered” Juror was Mary M. Tinti, who deserves a special mention for assembling such a meaningful exhibition. She’s an independent art historian and curator, who obtained her BA from Providence College and her PhD from Rutgers. Tinti is now Curator of the Firchburg Art Museum, and has also worked locally for WaterFire Providence and as the Koch Curatorial Fellow at deCordova in Lincoln. If there was a single word to describe her selections, all of which ask for careful viewing without being overwhelming, that word would be “evocative”.

As a specific “evocative” example, Amanda Kidd Schall’s works include several monotype prints made on words

from books. As you read the prose in her prints, see if the words you are reading form the same images as she has created. Recall how your early reading was learned by “making pictures” in your mind’s eye of what the page’s words really meant. Then, recall the early magic you experienced as you learned to “make pictures” from everything else you read.

Katie Dye works in glass; her creations in “Misremembered” are small sculptures. The glass she uses is a lead crystal glass with a high refractive index, which is melted and liquefied in a kiln at 1500F degrees. Her favorite work of art in the show is formed from the shape of her hands, which leads to an obvious question: “Dose she dip her hands into molten glass?” Well, of course not. No, Dye uses an ancient, multi-step technique known as “lost wax” casting. The highly refractive lead glass appears to glow, even in the low light that limns her sculptures.

Brittany Severance based her exhibits on photographs of her parents’ home, where she grew up. She then converted these into archival inkjet prints, with brilliant colors that mesh, click, and match. Wander through her works, and call back some scenes from the place where you grew up. Let the simplicity and two spectrum-spanning colors of “Janet’s Reading Space” stir your own memories.

Then, pick out the multiple colors on the tools in “Dad’s World”. Both deserve careful, leisurely looks. “Misremembered” is being shown for two more weeks until Thursday, April 12. Try not to miss it.

Pangyrus at “Art Under the Stairs”

By Rick Winterson Art under the Stairs is a locale created by FPTC (the “Fort Point Theatre Channel”) at Channel Center. All that was needed to get started were chairs and stairs (of course!). Shortly, there’ll be some additional lighting. Since its inception, Art under the Stairs has hosted a variety of performers. Most recently – on the evening of March 22 – Pangyrus, a literary magazine, came here to present a pentagram of varied spoken readings.

The people from Pangyrus who read for FPTC are all professional writers; they are all connected with Pangyrus in both creative and managerial capacities. They were (in the order in which they read): Cheryl Clark Vermeulen, Pangyrus poetry editor; Yahya Chaudry, social media director; Greg Harris, founding editor; Christopher Hartman, reviews editor; and Cynthia Bargar, managing editor..

This is not an attempt at

a review. This is (one hopes) a news article that accurately describes Pangyrus itself and its evening “under the stairs”. First and foremost, “Pangyrus” is a combinatorial pun, formed from the name of the hypothetical original continent, “Pangaea”, and a brain fold called the “gyrus” that mediates verbal skills. Second, the readings were well done and flew by quickly.

Pangyrus is the magazine published by a group of writers, editors, and creative professionals.

To quote their own introduction, they want to publish “well-crafted, thought-provoking writing and multi-media storytelling in every genre you can imagine.” They claim they’ll read every submission sent to them, “ … with fresh eyes and an open mind.” That’s quite a claim – keep it in mind. Their slogan is “Stories Connect Here”.

Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Eleanor Coer The students in grades 3A and 4A at South Boston Catholic Academy reached their goal of building their beautiful display of 1,000 Paper Cranes, based on the book they read entitled Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Eleanor Coerr. After being diagnosed with leukemia from the radiation, Sadako’s friend told her to fold origami paper cranes in hope of making a thousand of them. She was inspired to do so by the Japanese legend that one who created a thousand origami cranes would be granted a wish. Her wish was simply to live. Our students did fantastic job with this project, which is a representation of world peace, which will be mailed to Japan.

South Boston Bantams Capture the Gold Medal in Lake Placid, New York

T

his past weekend the South Boston bantams participated in the Can/Am Challenge Cup in Lake Placid, New York. Teams from various states such as Virginia, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Minnesota were all competing to take home the gold medal.

Our South Boston team took to the ice in the opening-round to face the Exton Kings of Exton, PA. There wasn’t anything regal about this team as our boys totally dominated the game from start to finish with a 7-0 thumping.

The next game proved to be a lot of the same as the local heroes thrashed the Valley Forge Colonials from Oaks, PA. 8-1.

The following contest proved to be a very physical contest with the NJ Rhinos from Mahwah, NJ. Our young men matched them with their physicality and our skill was too much for them as we prevailed 4-0.

The next game was very important and vital. The Reston Raiders of Reston VA. stood in the way of the teams first goal of the Challenge Cup; advancing and playing in the

The Instructional Basketball for 5-7 year olds is going strong.

After the 4th week the children are focusing on the basic fundamental skills of the game. This week we worked on dribbling and ended the day with a Shooting Game enjoyed by all. Stars of the week were Patrick Cherry, Benjamin Cherry, Sienna Holtzmuller, and Kane Coughlin.

Golf Clinic

The Spring Indoor Golf Clinic began on Wednesday, March 28th.

The youth class is open for boys and girls ages 7-17 and will be from 6-7 pm. The adult class will follow from 7-8 pm. There are still slots available for those still interested. The clinic is a great opportunity for individuals to learn techniques on their swing, putting, and pitching. The instructors do a fabulous job each year. Stop by the Tynan to register.

Girls Fitness

The girls did a fantastic in class last week. Amanda McCarthy, Fitness Instructor, had everyone on their toes and working hard. There

South Boston Resident Running Marathon For Dana Farber

With the Boston Marathon quickly approaching, I wanted to mention Joel Roberts of South Boston. Joel, a cancer survivor treated at Dana-Farber, was inspired by those running in his honor last year to fight for life through fundraising for Dana-Farber research. He is participating in the Boston Marathon this year for the first time as a member of the DanaFarber Marathon Challenge.

Joel, along with more than 500 Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge teammates from across

the United States and around the world, will run Massachusetts’ historic marathon route from Hopkinton to Boston to raise $5.5 million for cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Joel was first diagnosed with testicular cancer in November 2016. Last year, Joel watched with tears in his eyes as his friends, Paul Fridman and Julie Taylor Crister ran the Boston Marathon in his honor. Cheering on his friends last year was definitely a milestone for Joel.

Despite surgery, chemotherapy, and some complications, Joel watched as his friends ran by. Joel credits Dana-Farber with giving him hope, a new perspective on life and inspiration to want to run the marathon this year. He firmly believes that Dana-Farber provided him with a new lease on life. Though cancer-free, Joel is still receiving quarterly check-ups at Da na-Fa rber.

USS Constitution to Host Annual Easter Sunrise Service The crew of USS Constitution will host their annual Easter sunrise service aboard the ship at Pier 1, Charlestown Navy Yard on Sunday, April 1.

The non-denominational service will be open to the general public, free of charge. Guests may board Constitution starting at 6:45 a.m. with limited seating available on a first come, first serve basis. All guests age 18 and older are required to show a valid state or federal-issued photo I.D. or passport to board the ship.

The service is scheduled to commence at 7:10 a.m. and will conclude with observance of morning colors at 8 a.m. aboard ‘Old Ironsides.’ Guests are invited to remain aboard for interpretive tours of the ship.

Following the service, Constitution will reopen for the general public from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Constitution, America’s Ship of State, actively defended sea lanes against global threats from 1797-1855. The World’s Oldest Commissioned Warship Afloat, Constitution embodies 220 years of maritime heritage and unwavering service to her country. Now a featured destination on Boston’s Freedom Trail, Constitution and her crew of active duty U.S. Navy Sailors offer community outreach and education about the ship's history and the importance of naval sea power to more than 500,000 visitors each year.
