erhaps a def inition and a bit of history at first: the South Boston Neighborhood House at H and Sixth is affectionately nicknamed “The Ollie”, standing for the

Neighborhood House’s Founding Spirit, Olivia James. When “Ms. Ollie” started the Neighborhood House 117 years ago, it was originally a settlement house.

Briefly stated, it changed with the times - it now serves both the young and senior residents of South Boston, supporting family and neighborhood life in countless ways.

The 2018 Parade also had another reason to celebrate: South Boston’s Squirt Hockey Team (Tier Two) are the 2017-2018 Massachusetts State Champions.

And they were joined in the Parade by members of the U.S. Olympic Hockey Gold Medalists.

The South Boston Allied War Veterans Council It is worthwhile repeating a few facts and figures about last Sunday’s 2018 St. Patrick’s/ Evacuation Day Parade. An estimated 125 marching units pa rticipated in this yea r’s Parade. On Monday, we read in Boston’s daily newspapers that maybe as many as a million spectators attended the Parade, despite the uncomfortably cold weather. That makes out Parade the largest in New England and the third largest in the country.

Parades during previous years as well. Many of the members of the SBAW VC work on various assignments during the Parade, and so they actually don’t get to see the Parade themselves.

Second, the issue of safety came up this year. The City of Boston made a decision that the snow last week was a Parade hazard. Therefore, the City cut the Parade route in half, which may eliminate a large portion of the Parade’s local meaning.

Fra nk ly, Sout h Boston Online doubts that a million spectators showed up. However, based on previous years, half of that number, or 500,000, would not be unusual. To put that number in perspective, please consider that 500,000 people would fill 25 TD Bank Gardens for the Celts and Bruins, 12 Fenway Parks for the Red Sox, or 7 Gillette Stadiums for the Patriots.

And a half a million, or 500,000, is just the “lowside” nu mb er t h at ou r Pa rade attracts each yea r.

M a g n a n i m o u s l y, the SBAWVC agreed to proceed with the 2018 Parade, even though its route had been shortened. This shows the Veterans Council’s appreciation of the greater good: To have the best Parade possible in order to carry on this tradition, no matter what problems arise.

The final SBAWVC Parade meeting (on safety) takes place last Thursday evening, March 15.

You probably know that South Boston’s A nnua l St. Pa t r i c k ’s / Ev a c u a t i o n Day Parade is funded, scheduled, org a ni z ed, a nd u lt imately presented by the South Boston Allied War Veterans Council (the SBAW VC). This has been the case for the last 70 years, under a legal arrangement that was later supported by (among other things) a 9-0 favorable Supreme Court decision. You know this

already, but it’s worth repeating: The Parade is an enormous amount of work that is handled entirely by the SBAW VC, which from yea r to yea r numbers only 15 members or so.

This editorial has two very simple purposes. First of all, South Boston Online wants to thank the SBAW VC very much for their efforts in 2018, and for their efforts on all the

No one has to be told about Mayor Walsh’s concern with and devotion to nonprofit organizations like the Neighborhood House. Executive Director Kathy Lafferty speaks of his interest in South Boston. She told Online about when Walsh was a state Representative not directly concerned with South Boston, he made it a point to visit her at the Neighborhood House to find out more about it. He suggested that Kathy call him if there were any questions or issues she wanted to discuss or needed help with.

He didn’t have to do that – as a public servant, he just reached out Fifteen years ago, Kathleen Regan at Merrill Lynch called up the Neighborhood House to offer her services as a volunteer, backed by Merrill Lynch. Because

of Kathleen’s efforts, the Holiday Helper Program was founded. She also reached out to her contacts at Fidelity, John Hancock, Global Investors, and other Boston corporations. Now, over 400 families receive assistance that makes their Holidays memorable and exciting; more than 50 of these families are helped by Merrill Lynch directly. And it’s all because Kathleen volunteered.

The 2018 Event Chair of this evening is none other than the Beauty Bar’s Dyan LaRosa. She has just received a Shamrock Award from the Citizens’ Association.

SBCA’s Annual Banquet – A Great Evening

ast Friday saw the South Boston Citizens’ Association (the SBCA) 138th Annual Evacuation Day Banquet, a part of the 242nd Annual Evacuation Day Events. It commemorated March 17, 1776, the day that the British left Boston for good – the very first victory in our War for Independence commanded

by General George Washington.

Some 300 celebrants attended, greeted by the SBCA’s 11-year President Tom McGrath. For your information, the SBCA is the

nation’s oldest civic organization.

It was a gala indeed. Curragh’s Fancy provided Irish songs and music. Malden Comic Dave Russo showed no mercy to the Head Table – the “Head Table to Infinity”.

The Convention Center’s corned beef and cabbage was outstanding.

The high point of the evening was the Awards program.

Somehow, the SBCA Awards always seem to be well-deserved and highly fitting. Boston Fire Commissioner Joseph Finn received the 2018 John W McCormack Public Service Award. Later in the program, Mayor Walsh called Finn

“the best Fire Commissioner in the country”. After that, Dyan La Rosa and Eddie O’Brien received Jimmy Kelly/Peggy Flaherty Community Service Shamrock Awards from Congressman Steve Lynch and Mayor Marty Walsh, respectively.

In a nice touch, Mayor Walsh presented Barbara Signor, the 2018 Parade Chief Marshal, with a glistening Revere bowl.

Commander Shick, USN, from the USS Constitution received a commemorative plaque from Councilors Flaherty and Flynn, the Mayor, and SBCA President McGrath, for his very well-spoken

remarks.

Councilor Flaherty and the Mayor also presented SBCA President Tom McGrath with an authentic street sign that read “Tom McGrath Way”.

Fitting, of course, but where will his street sign be installed?

Gov. Charlie Baker, Auditor Suzanne Bump, Senatorial candidate Nick Collins, Clerk of Court Maura Doyle, and Allied War Veterans Commander Dave Falvey all added their remarks. Fr. Joe White offered Grace. And of course, there were several comments about “Short Routes”. Can you guess why?

Goings On - St. Patrick’s / Evacuation Day

by Rick Winterson Last Saturday, was “the day itself” (so to speak). It was March 17, the combined St. Patrick’s/Evacuation Day. If you are seeking a more explicit tie-in between both observances, Gen. George Washington called for “Saint Patrick” to be used as the countersign password on Dorchester Heights on March 17, which turned out to be our celebrated Evacuation Day, Washington’s first Revolutionary War victory.

The South Boston Citizens’ Association (SBCA) continued its ongoing work in commemorating and celebrating Evacuation Day. Saturday morning at 9, Fr. Joe White said the Evacuation Day Memorial Mass in the historic (200 years old this year) St.

Augustine Chapel. This was followed by observances on Dorchester Heights, the site of the actual fortifications that led the British evacuating Boston on March 17, 1776. Despite the bitter cold, musket salutes were rendered, “Taps” was played, and a memorial wreath was solemnly laid by the SBCA at the “American Redoubts” stone.

Well, the Parade wasn’t scheduled until the next day, so the rest of Saturday had to be spent in some way. Lines formed at local watering holes (for green beer, no doubt). Our Branch Library held a book sale. Lots of green clothing was visible. March 17 ended – generally – with quiet dinners, evening Vigil Masses, and much anticipation of the next day’s Parade.

When Science Touches Everything Else: A Brief Tribute to Stephen Hawking

I

t was inevitable that when Stephen Hawking looked up into the sky that he would see things very differently than you or I, but it was not a forgone conclusion that he would spread his philosophy of science around the globe, and become a household name before passing away. I cannot, (like most people), pretend to understand his theory of radiation, black holes, quantum mechanics, etc. but read some of the suppositions only to feel, rather delightfully, the top of my head being blown open to a giant sky. We cannot fathom his daring in imagining the universe, and there was always a strange sense of unintentional immortality to his words. that

books forever, stated in plain terms, was his stock in trade.

That he would signif icantly increase the likelihood that people with primitive belief systems would eventually come to understand new worlds through scientific knowledge; reading Hawk ing bore the promise of banishing human ignorance-merely by revealing how little we actually know about the origin of the universe.

Especially since he presented its unending complexity that can’t be explained in a few sentences, (in a world accustomed to instant, pat answers), Hawking’s speculations sparkle like stars.

Cha llenging Einstein is not for wimps, but Hawking apparently did so when he contested Einstein’s hidden variable theory, and said that God does play dice, in his A view from the Hubble Telescope, image from NASA website. appropriately named essay “Does God Play Dice?” He stunned people by how many new ideas he would introduce in short essays, and his own ability to see other points of view. He was as striking when he quoted primitive religions as modern philosophy, and even more so when he plunged them into the world of quantum mechanics, and the origins of the universe.

Quite simply, he let all of us nonscientists see the world scientists live in, without burdening us with pages of formulas. His ability to write and speak about the inordinately complex in concise terms was clearly the product of a mind that was at once profound, and also, very unpretentious.

T his specia l sense of humility and humor, combined with a slight devilishness, was what so many people who knew Hawk ing i n s t a nt a n e o u s l y remembered upon his death.

People who talked with him for

an extended time never went away from the conversation think ing of a handicapped person, for beyond his amusing anecdotes, they were mystified by his brilliance. Probably no one who is familiar with his work can look up at the sky without thinking of his theories.

Sometime way back in history when mankind started creating stories about the stars, they also charted a way for humans to find the way out of chaos.

Science has reintroduced chaos to modern man, but when Hawking mentioned this new field of science in an essay, he did so in a way that had a humanizing effect. I suspect that genius is subtler than most people believe- it masks itself out of necessity. He was born exactly 300 years after the death of Galileo, on January 8, 1942.

One gets the feeling that if God had not originally created Stephen Hawking, it would have been necessary to do so.

SBCA Honoring St. Patrick’s Day! The students at South Boston Catholic Academy have been beginning and ending the week with Father Tom Olson, our Parochial Vicar, leading them in prayer during the season of Lent. Morning prayer is a special time for students to come together to share their faith. Students also celebrated Pi Day and the 6th grade students visited all the classrooms to teach students a bit about this special mathematical celebration. On Friday, March 16, 2018, students dressed in green in honor of St. Patrick’s Day and the Annual Student-Faculty Basketball Game was held.

Last week the Golden Knights took on the Jets in a great game. Lakaya played a great game playing goalie for the first time. The Jets had a 5-3 lead after the first intermission. In the second period the Knights came back to take the victory 9-7 in a thriller. Henry Dinatale had 5 goals and Ryan McGarrell 3 goals for the Knights. Rocco “Sniper” Blasi had 3 beautiful goals and Mario Blasi 2 goals for the Jets.

In the second game the Predators defeated Vancouver by the score of 5-3. Ryan Alexander lead the Predators with 2 goals. Joe Leeman had a strong game for Vancouver, scoring 2 goals.

SB Residents Run Marathon for Mass General Hospital Team

Instructional Basketball Defensive skills, dribbling game, and shooting were the main focuses in last week’s class. Many participants are improving on their dribbling and shooting fundamentals as each week passes. Stars of the week were Will Christino, Ronan Foley, Brody Young and Teya Mahanama.

Indoor Golf Clinic The Spring Indoor Golf Clinic will begin on Wednesday, March 28th. The youth class is open for boys and girls ages 7-17 and will be from 6-7 pm. The adult class will follow from 7-8 pm. The clinic is a great opportunity for individuals to learn techniques on their swing, putting, and pitching.

The instructors do a fabulous job each year. You may register with Parks and Recreation Department on line or stop by Tynan Gym.

Girls Fitness The girls did a fantastic job on opening night. Amanda McCarthy, Fitness Instructor, had everyone on their toes and working hard. There are still slots available for any girl 10 and over to register. Classes are held on Monday nights from 6-7 pm.

Six South Boston residents will run in the 122nd Boston Marathon on April 16th as part of the Massachusetts General Hospital’s Pediatric Oncology Team, Fighting Kids’ Cancer ... One Step at a Time, and the Emergency Response Marathon Team. The two teams, which include former patients and family members, Mass General employees and longtime hospital supporters, will join an estimated 30,000 runners along the 26.2 mile course that spans from Hopkinton to Boston’s Boylston Street. Funds raised by the runners will benefit essential patient services as well as research and training programs at Mass General.

Pediatric team participants include Jennifer Sullivan, Gina Ubertini, Bridget Kearney, Jordan Sampson, and Kaitlin Sampson.

Emily Radkowski will run on behalf of the emergency response team.

The pediatric team, made up

of 102 runners, aims to raise more than $1,075,000 this year to support cancer research initiatives as well as quality of life programming such as art and music therapy; support groups; and child life specialists who help patients and their families cope with illness and treatment. The emergency response team’s 40 runners hope to collectively raise $430,000 to provide critical support for emergency care, disaster relief and disaster preparedness teaching and training at Mass General, efforts that benefit victims worldwide.

Since its founding in 1998, the Mass General Pediatric Oncology Team, in partnership with John Hancock, has raised more than $13.4 million to support research and activities for children with cancer. The emergency response team, which was guaranteed entries after the hospital’s response to the 2013 marathon bombings, has raised over $1.4 million for essential programs and services.

“Each of our runners has dedicated countless hours to their training and fundraising efforts,” says Peter L. Slavin, MD, president of the Massachusetts General Hospital. “On behalf of the MGH community, I salute and thank these individuals who dedicate so much of themselves to support our efforts to improve the health of others.”

Registration Now Open for all Girls Sports Festival Mayor Martin J. Walsh, the Boston Parks and Recreation Department, and Boston Centers for Youth & Families invite girls from throughout the city to spend their April school vacation at the All Girls Sports Festival in Roxbury. The free four-day event will take place April 17 to April 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily.

“Young women from all over Boston are invited to come join our Parks Department for our annual festival of sports clinics and life skills workshops during April school vacation week," said Mayor Walsh. “It’s a great time to have fun, make new friends, and develop new strengths that will help our students grow and learn in the years to come."

Activities will be held at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center at Roxbury Community College, 1350 Columbus Avenue, and the nearby BCYF Madison Park Community Center, Building 4, 55 Malcolm X Boulevard. The All Girls Sports Festival features a variety of sport clinics and health and wellness workshops supported by local colleges, non-profits, and City of Boston agencies. Free lunch will be also be provided.

Participants will find a variety of fun ways to exercise mind, body, and spirit and try out a variety of sports with expert instructors including basketball, tennis, Double Dutch, step dancing, track, swimming, rugby and soccer. Participants must be Boston residents ages 11 to 14 and should wear activity-appropriate clothing.

Mayor’s Cup Street Hockey Tournament Coming April 17-19

Mayor Martin J. Walsh and the Boston Parks and Recreation Department will host the 2018 Mayor’s Cup Street Hockey Tournament in partnership with the Boston Bruins on April 17, 18, and 19 during the April public school vacation week.

“Every year, young players from neighborhoods across Boston compete in the Mayor’s Cup Tournament for the title of ‘Boston’s Best,’” said Mayor Walsh. “This is a great competition that many look forward to every

year, and I thank the Boston Bruins for their partnership and support and wish this year’s players all the best of luck.”

Additional support is provided

by P&G Gillette. Teams will compete in two regions in Mite (ages 7 to 8) and Squirt (ages 9 to 10) divisions. Please note that pre-registration for teams is required with a limit of eight teams per regional division.

Region 1 playoffs will take place Tuesday, April 17, at Fallon Field located at 910 South Street in Roslindale. Region 2 playoffs will take place Wednesday, April 18, at Garvey Playground located at 340 Neponset Avenue in Dorchester. Winning teams will meet for the finals at Ryan Playground, located at 74 Alford Street in Charlestown, on Thursday, April 19.

USS Constitution to Host Annual Easter Sunrise Service The crew of USS Constitution will host their annual Easter sunrise service aboard the ship at Pier 1, Charlestown Navy Yard on Sunday, April 1.

The non-denominational service will be open to the general public, free of charge. Guests may board Constitution starting at 6:45 a.m. with limited seating available on a first come, first serve basis. All guests age 18 and older are required to show a valid state or federal-issued photo I.D. or passport to board the ship.

The service is scheduled to commence at 7:10 a.m. and will conclude with observance of morning colors at 8 a.m. aboard ‘Old Ironsides.’ Guests are invited to remain aboard for interpretive tours of the ship.

Following the service, Constitution will reopen for the general public from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Constitution, America’s Ship of State, actively defended sea lanes against global threats from 1797-1855. The World’s Oldest Commissioned Warship Afloat, Constitution embodies 220 years of maritime heritage and unwavering service to her country. Now a featured destination on Boston’s Freedom Trail, Constitution and her crew of active duty U.S. Navy Sailors offer community outreach and education about the ship's history and the importance of naval sea power to more than 500,000 visitors each year.

Constitution is berthed at Pier One in Charlestown Navy Yard.
