St. Augustine Chapel’s Bicentennial by Rick Winterson

T

he ad hoc Committee to put together a fitting set of observances to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the St. Augustine Chapel and Cemetery at Dorchester and Sixth Streets met for the second time last Thursday, March 1.. This meeting was convened by Fr. Robert Casey, the Pastor of St. Brigid and Gate of Heaven Parishes, as well as the Chapel and Cemetery. It was held in the Gate of Heaven Lower Hall; fifteen Committee members attended. Several possibilities for commemorating this Anniversary have been brought forward. Some points have now become firm. The entire weekend of September 14, 15, and 16 (Friday through Sunday) will be set aside for the Bicentennial observances, which will begin Friday evening, perhaps with an

Last Saturday’s Jimmy Fla her t y Kick-Off Breakfast (the 138th, courtesy of the South Boston

Citizen’s Association) was just one example of this long-standing neighborhood tradition. And it was a successful kick-off of the “Southie Season”, which leads up to the Parade on March 18. A full house gathered in Tom Connolly’s Seapoint Banquet Room. They were entertained by the Irish tunes of Bob Fowkes’ Continued on page 8

A surprised and delighted Michael Donovan receives a citation for all his work on events like the Kickoff from Nick Collins, Ed Flynn, Michael Flaherty, and Tom McGrath.
