Douglas High School: The End? We Hope!

South Boston Online has had enough – more than enough. The massacre in Parkland, Florida, at the Marjory Stoneman High School took 17 lives. Massacres will only continue unless all of us, especially our elected officials (at all levels) and our law enforcement officials (at all levels), focus on preventing any more such tragedies.

It’s time (or maybe long past time) for us, and every other U.S. medium, to insist upon better gun regulations. Why? Because massacres could happen here, in one of South Boston’s eight schools!

Three enormous, challenging problems must be (somehow) solved: first, spotting those unfortunately deranged human beings who may commit these atrocities; second, tightening security at our schools, and third, enacting firm gun regulations.

You’ll hear the usual arguments against gun control, of course, relating to the Second Amendment’s “right to bear arms”. Well, just under a century

ago (1919), then Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., wrote his “clear and present danger” opinion. Google it up yourself. He said freedom of speech is our First Amendment right. However, Holmes added that we have no “right” to yell “FIRE!” in a crowded theater.

In exactly the same way, there certainly is no inherent Second Amendment “right” to the combat weapon (an AR-15) used to kill children and teachers in Parkland. Possession of guns must be carefully regulated As we all do, South Boston Online recognizes Constitutional rights.

Furthermore, there is nothing in what we’ve said above that ignores the Second Amendment. We simply seek to protect defenseless school students, as well as their teachers. This is a stand we all should have taken after Virginia Tech and Newtown.

Chris Hixon, and Teacher Scott Beigel - gave their lives to protect their students. They are true heroes, just like our police, firefighters, and combat veterans.

America simply can’t afford to lose any more citizens like they were. Think of how you would feel if your child lost one of her or his favorite teachers to an assassin.

And then there’s the advice from Police Chiefs across the nation: Ban assault weapons, except those few actually authorized for use by the various militias in the U.S. That leaves guns for recreation, licensed hunting, and personal protection, per the Second Amendment.

Why can’t we accept the Chiefs’ advice? They

know what they’re talking about.

What can you do? If South Boston Online is any judge, elections between now and 2020 will be intensely fought. How about contacting every potential candidate regarding gun regulation? Pay special attention to those who are running for re-election. They’ve already had the chance to pass gun regulations and didn’t.

Keep contacting them – by word of mouth, phone calls, letters, emails, text messages, or whatever.

Keep that pressure on through the elections in November, 2020.

After all, that’s democracy.

But please act – our children and teachers are in “Clear and present danger”!

Flynn Holds South Boston Office Hours

Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn will take his Neighborhood Office Hours program to the Curley Recreation Center (M St. Side), 1663 Columbia Road, this Saturday, February 24th from 11am-1pm.

Councilor Flynn recently held office hours in South Boston last Friday morning at the Cranberry Cafe as well. Residents are encouraged to bring constituent and neighborhood issues directly to Councilor Flynn and his staff.

“As City Councilor, it was important for me to begin this program and bring City Hall services to each

of our neighborhoods. Oftentimes, people are unable to take the time from work or too busy to travel into the city to deal with a particular issue. This is an opportunity for us to come to the neighborhood over the weekend and hear from our residents directly about their concerns regarding our parks, public safety, development, and our libraries,” said Flynn. “My belief is that every part of District 2 deserves to be treated with respect and dignity, as well as having the same access to basic city services as everyone else. This is just the beginning of our program and I will continue to bring City Hall services to each of our neighborhoods.”

Rep. Collins Votes to Protect Data Breaches Rep. Collins votes for bill to protect consumers following data breaches. The House passes legislation that removes fees for security freezes and increases access to credit reports.

I

n response to recent breaches like the one at Equifax, which jeopardized the personal information of more than 140 million Americans, State Representative Nick Collins joined his colleagues in the House to pass legislation providing added protections and resources for consumers. Under this legislation, credit freezes, lifts, or removals must be provided to consumers without a charge, and credit agencies or businesses must also provide one year of free credit monitoring after any breach.

The legislation updates the framework for the implementation of a freeze and related communications including:

1) Modernizes the current law by allowing consumers to request credit freezes electronically or by telephone.

2) Implements a 24-hour online notification from the Office of Consumer Affairs.

3) Requires clear and accurate disclosure to consumers of basic information about credit freezes.

4) In the event of a security breach, mandates credit agencies place a security freeze on a consumer report within one day of an electronic or telephone request, and within three days of receipt of a written request.

5) Credit agencies must send confirmation of the security freeze within three days.

“I

am proud to support this legislation that protects Massachusetts residents and modernizes the way we deal with this sensitive information” said Rep. Collins. “Especially after these high profile breaches and in these times of increased cyber-security concerns, it is imperative that every resident, especially our seniors, have more control over their credit protections and that victims can more easily respond to these sorts of violations.”

For the first time in Massachusetts, this legislation also establishes specific guidelines for parents and guardians to freeze accounts of children under the age of 16 and incapacitated individuals. The bill now moves to the Senate for consideration.

Review: The 75 on Courthouse Square

A classic “75” dish – rack of lamb over brown rice, with asparagus.

by Rick Winterson This will be a brief restaurant review, but despite its brevity, highly complimentary.

“75 on Courthouse Square” opened for business on Friday evening, January 26, after hosting a press lunch the day before, which South Boston Online wrote up in our February 1 issue. We promised ourselves (and them) that we would return to review 75 on Courthouse Square, which we did last Wednesday, February 14.

That it also happened to be Valentine’s Day 2018 was not a coincidence.

This reviewer and his friend both were seeking a lamb dish. That night, 75 on Courthouse Square was offering a full rack, which perfectly hit the medium well requested by one of us, as well as the medium rare sought by the other. The brown rice and asparagus capped off what was really a Mediterranean dinner. The lady asked for Prosecco frizzata, which she said had a pleasant undertone of German white – not Liebfrauenmilch, perhaps, but acceptable. The other, being an abstemious chap, ordered ginger ale (frizzata, also). The lamb, after grilling, came with a rich, brown sauce that blended perfectly with the nutty, grainy taste of the brown rice. The asparagus spears needed no introduction – they were consumed by the stalk, sans cutting and dicing.

There are other dishes well worth trying at 75 on Courthouse Square – both were served at the press lunch.

Their crab cakes have a marvelous but indefinable tang to them. A touch of red pepper is part of it; the rest of the taste was unidentifiable but just plain delicious. And for a fish

dish, be sure to try their Nantucket stew. It’s not a chowder. It’s a real stew, with varied fish and shellfish couched in a warm brown broth.

And it’s not bouillabaisse, either – it’s hearty and there’s nothing to shell.

Square is eye-catching. We’ll repeat something from our previous “75” article – the 75 restaurants state that their aim is to serve “comfortable food at reasonable prices”. Well, 75 on Courthouse Square certainly does.

A Walk Around the Seaport

o one has to tell you that Boston is a walking city, or that South Boston is a walking neighborhood.

Just think about the Heights, West Broadway, Castle Island, all our parks and playgrounds, and our shops, stores, and stopping-in places.

Even if you already knew this much, you might not yet realize that South Boston’s Seaport District offers you one (or more) of the nicest walks in the entire nation. If you are near our rapidly developing Seaport District, just walk over the Summer Street Bridge, the Congress Street Bridge, or the Evelyn Moakley Bridge. Or walk down A Street from West Broadway through Fort Point. Or take the Silver Line from South Station and get off at the first stop (Courthouse), or catch the #7 bus from City Point.

But above all, please leave your car at home. Plan on walking – it’s free – as well as very pleasant..

A glance at the photographs will help orient you, but remember

that everything depicted is just minutes (walking minutes) away from everything else shown. And of course, take your time. A drink, a cup of coffee, and a bite to eat are all right at hand, so what’s your hurry.

You are out for a walk – a memorable walk. Make it last as long as possible.

Works of art adorn the Seaport District at every turn. Three of these – “Quarks”, “Boston Is …”, and “Dear Seaport” - are purposely emplaced on or within the borders of One Seaport, the WS Development area featured in some of our recent articles about the South Boston Waterfront.

The architecture of the Seaport ranges from the simple, soaring “Fallen Heroes” obelisk to

the medieval vibe of Our Lady of Good Voyage Shrine to the immense glass curtain walls of the multipurpose structures that have sprung up, seemingly overnight, centered on the brilliant Courthouse Square.

Follow along Fort Point Channel to see “PYR (pyramid) 2014” by Don Eyles and “Iceberg A68” by Gianna Stewart, ending with striking black iron castings of sailing ships on the edge of Fan Pier. And there’s no shortage of museums within a short distance – the Children’s Museum at Sleeper and Congress Streets, New England Arts & Crafts on Seaport Boulevard., and the ICA (Institute of Contemporary Art) with superb harbor views, just a short walk down Harbor Shore Drive.

We aren’t necessarily telling you where to shop or stop, but you should know, if you are in the market for eyewear, that Warby Parker, with a shop on Newbury Street, has just opened a branch on Seaport Boulevard.

Look for the ICON sign on Seaport Boulevard also – the Kerasotes ShowPlace ICON Theatre is the City of Boston’s first luxury movie house, with heated seats, yet. Worcester Polytechnic Institute just opened their “WPI Seaport” Innovation Center (JAN 31) at Congress, overlooking the Fort Point Channel. They were conducting technology classes for Fort Point businesses when this writer dropped in – on foot, of course.

Check the weather – spring has, well, “sprung”. Outdoor entertainment in our Seaport includes light/sound seesaws, a basketball court, and a surfaced green where you can reserve lawn game equipment. Walking is the urban way to go. Enough said – experience South Boston’s Seaport District on shoe leather/ shank’s mare. You’ll be glad you did.

Lena Horne Commemorative Stamp Unveiled

by Rick Winterson On Thursday morning, February 15, the midpoint of Black History Month, the unveiling of the 41st Black Heritage Stamp took place in the Postal Annex at its Fort Point Station. The stamp depicted, and was a well- deserved tribute to Lena Horne, the 20th Century’s iconic blues singer of “Stormy Weather”, along with so much other music that is identified with her. What is less known about Ms. Horne are her many trials and her ultimate dedication to the cause of equality in America.

In a performance that truly fit the occasion, local piano virtuoso Geoffrey Dana Hicks played a varied medley of the music associated with Lena Horne. Mr. Hicks’ solo chops are superb; he varied many of his selections through intervals of ragtime, “stride”, and rent music, up through modern jazz and lounge treatments.

In addition, the Roxbury

Repertory Theater (the RRT), directed by Marshall Hughes, presented an original reading about Ms. Horne’s life created

by RRT member Cliff Blake, and entitled “Lena’s March”.

This was performed by seven members of the RRT, including the writer, also an RRT member.

The occasion was emceed

by Valerie Foxx, USPS Human Relations Specialist, and Nicolas R. Francescucci, Greater Boston

Postmaster. They both shared their feelings about Ms. Horne and the past Black Heritage Stamps.

Mr. Francescucci then introduced the Keynote Speaker, Tanisha Sullivan, President of the NA ACP Boston.

Ms. Sullivan is an excellent speaker. She is musically talented, and ref lected upon Lean Horne’s inf luence on her own life. She also spoke about Ms. Horne’s performances during World War

II, when she objected to “Jim Crow” segregated audiences during her USO concerts. Ms. Sullivan closed her remarks by stating, “We must have ‘respect’ for one another, just like Lena.”

A rendering of Lena Horne’s Commemorative Stamp was then ceremoniously unveiled in a climactic moment.

A collation followed.

It was quite an occasion, indeed.

Nicely Done: The Progressive New England Boat Show

S

ome trade shows at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center may be more dazzling, but it would be hard to find a more congenial group than the nautical purveyors collected this past week at the New England Boat Show as produced

by Progressive Insurance. Outside of the sheer quantity of every conceivable water traveling craft, from sail boats to jet skis, yachts, fishing boats, tugs, craft cruisers; this show had plenty of vendors offering training, maintenance, and ancillary products. The show’s guide claims that the Massachusetts recreational boating industry has an annual impact of $2.1 billion a year. It seemed like I saw $2 billion dollars-worth of nautical equipment in the 250 displays at this one show.

Being in the older demographic, I was positively drooling over the Chris Craft line of classic American made handcrafted boats. A more understated luxurious and solid pleasure boat line has never been made.

The provenance of Chris Crafts goes all the way back to 1874, but it is remembered by the Baby Boom generations for its appearance in classic movies, use by famous first families, and being the on dock stars at summer camps from New York to New England. With clever names like Capri, Calypso, Catalina, these highly engineered boats lined with hand crafted teak and butt cosseting upholstery come in everything from small 21ft. family sizes all the way up to 43 ft. yachts. There may be flashier boats throughout the show, but you’d have a tough time matching these for style and old world craftsmanship.

For pure luxury East Coast Yacht Sales was displaying an American Tug yacht in the half a million category that was basically a luxury condo with a hull. The smooth talking and friendly Representatives Rob Geaghan from Yarmouth Maine, and Michael Porter of Ports-

mouth Rhode Island had a great time taking people on tours of the vessel. They revealed clever fold away tables that turn into sleeping beds, the lower cabin with fancy bathroom and master bedroom, the craftsmanship of the generous wood lined fully equipped kitchen / dining area, and the advanced navigation systems. They didn’t have to sell the boat, but getting people to leave it in order to let others on to enjoy it required a little gentle nudging.

Among American classics, the Boston Whaler series is a sturdy utilitarian boat designed by Richard Fisher that has proved its mettle over time. Beloved by fisherman for sixty years, versions of this boat are the bread and butter of fishing villages from New Bedford to Gloucester and beyond. The East Coast Business Manager, Doug Nettles directed me away from their fancier cruise line to the Montauk series, the standard bearer for fishing, and its newest iteration: the Montauk 170. With the Mercury outboard engine, classic front perch, big captain’s stand and convenient fishing stations this is how I always thought of the Boston Whalers. But if you look at the Outrage Series you’ll realize they also hold their own in luxury cabin cruisers.

The Malibu boat series that is focused on water skiing and wake boarding sports cuts across the thrill seeker market with rocket sized engines, all kinds of high tech devices, quad sound, and muscle boat appeal. These boats do well in California and Florida were the water is warm enough to really enjoy water sports for extended months outside summer. Bosun’s Marine, a heavy hitter in boat sales and service throughout New England, had a centrally located display of multiple kinds of vessels. Lines formed to get up close to the Edge Water series of high tech fishing boats that loomed over the show with spectacular fly bridges, major amenities, powered by triple outboards.

The Godfrey pontoon boats are styled for family parties on the water, with built in bars and kitchens, big sofa seating areas, serving the inner lounge lizard in all of us. At first glance they are kind of comical, like floating living rooms, but

The Ladies from Bravery Brand. when talking with Erica Moore from Rockingham Boat Repair and Sales, it became easy to imagine one of these boats festooned with Japanese lanterns, the grill pumping out barbeque, and having the space for adults and children to congregate for a family reunion. Of course there were still a few sail boats- but only a few. The classic Herreshoff Boats from Bristol Rhode Island had a tiny booth. Yamaha seemed to dominate the jet ski market, which even at the high end, seemed like the most affordable family water recreation.

There were vendors for a wide variety of services. The Boston Harbor Sailing Club had a booth and was offering special rates until February 24th on all levels of training. Located at Rowe’s Wharf these guys offer everything from day sailing instruction to masters bareboat instruction.

They have a fleet of 70 boats, and have been in business for 44 years.

Boat Wise Marine Training was on hand as well, with their emphasis upon boat safety, USCG License Courses, Captain’s license, training in CPR, First Aid, and marine safety requirements. The people who come to save you when you are in trouble in the harbor at Tow Boats US came with both their Boston and Cape Cod Staffs on board. If one attended the workshops that ran the length of this show on fishing, maintenance and being sea worthy, it would make this a real boater’s education.

Among the gift items Lindsay Tia’s patriotic Bravery Brand boat bags and accessories looked 4th of July ready. There were plenty of kid’s activities in the Progressive playground area, with virtual reality demos, oversized inflatables, coloring and games. While I would say this is a show for boat buyers, or owners looking to upgrade; the entertainment value of the show itself would make a fairly fun family day out. Book mark this for kid’s spring vacation next year if you missed it

Boston Design Center Series: Galerie d’Orsay in the Seaport

T

he venerable Newbury Street Galerie d’Orsay opened a pop up gallery in the Boston Design Center to work hands-on with interior designers looking to acquire art for businesses and residences in the fast growing Seaport. South Boston Online got the full tour of the main gallery, and the satellite branch in the Seaport from Camille Super, one of the fine art consultants. Founded by art historian and curator, Sallie Hirshberg in the year 2000, the Galerie d’Orsay, besides selling premier art works from around the world, offers in home consultations, regularly curates showings at the Newbury Street Gallery, and has a well-educated staff that welcomes art enthusiasts for in house for tours.

The pop-up gallery at the Seaport specializes in assisting interior designers, and has a decent representation of the home Galeries key artists on display. From smaller sculptures to big wall works for business lobbies, the Galerie d’Orsay has exclusive rights to internationally known artists. Among their most popular sellers are the works of Bruno and Natasha Zupan, known for big impressionistic works of European cities and Boston. For as long as I can remember, the gallery has always had a fine print showing of Chagall, Salvador Dali, Matisse, Picasso, Renoir, and older classical artists Rembrandt, Durer. Many interior designers attend the gallery to get access to a select group of artists who paint large abstract works, like American painter Kathy Buist whose works are heavily sought after by innovative companies to decorate large public spaces.

The current show: Storytellers: Featuring Marc Chagall, Henry Matisse, and Pablo Picasso also features work of Rembrandt.

South Boston Catholic Academy News The week before February Vacation was a busy week for the students at South Boston Catholic Academy. They did “Random Acts of Kindness Week” and students thoughtfully spread their kindness with games such as “Kindness Bingo” and conversations and readings centered around kindness. Tuesday, February 13, 2018, marked our 100th Day of school! Students celebrated the 100th Day with several fun activities and games celebrating the number 100!

Students participated in the Ash Wednesday Mass on Wednesday, February 14, 2018. Our Parochial Vicar, Father Tom Olson was the celebrant and our talented Children’s Choir, led by our Music Teacher, Mrs. Mary Hoy, provided the wonderful music at the Ash Wednesday Mass at St. Brigid Church.

To begin our Lenten Season of giving, South Boston Catholic Academy will be participating in Operation Rice Bowl. Through Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl, we share the journey with members of our human family around the world, and commit our Lenten prayers, fasting and almsgiving to deepening our faith and serving those in need.

Tynan Happenings Our Teen Center is now opened Monday through Friday from 6-9 pm.

We have a variety of activities for our teens to participate, including but not limited to board games/tournaments, trivia nights, Netflix/movie night. We are also equipped with a brand new Play Station with online access. Stop in and use our chrome books for both educational and recreational purposes. We have been long awaiting our Teen Center and are excited to finally have this space.

The BCYF Youth Floor Hockey League kicked off its 2018 season last week. In the first game the Golden Knights took on the Vancouver Canucks in a close game. The Knights had a 5-3 lead after the second period and never looked back, taking the victory by the final score of 8-5. Ryan McGarrell lead all scorers with 4 goals for the Knights.

Joe Leeman and Christian Devlin scored 2 goals apiece for the Canucks.

In the following game the Nashville Predators defeated the Winnipeg Jets in an exciting game, by the score of 8-6. Nolan Young had 4 goals for the Predators and Evan Pierce 5 goals for the Jets.

The Instructional Basketball for 5-7 year old boys and girls will begin on Monday, February 26th. Class will be on Mondays from 4-5 p.m. The children will enjoy a 7 week instruction on the basic fundamentals of basketball: dribbling, shooting and passing. You may register anytime in the gym, between 3-7pm. Space will be limited and there will be a $20 membership fee required.

We are now registering players for our Youth Basketball League for boys and girls 7-11. A mandatory practice session will be on Tuesday, February 27th for all interested. Teams will made and the league will begin on Tuesday, March 6th. Anyone interested should stop by to register with Greg Lally.

Youth Worker, Katie O’Connell, will be starting the BCYF-Tynan Girls’ Fitness program. Fitness Instructor, Amanda McCarthy, will be returning to conduct the (8) week program. Classes will be held on Monday nights, 6-7 pm at the Tynan Gym for girls ages 10 and over. Classes will begin Monday, March 6th. A $20 registration fee (in check or money order) will be applied at the time of registration. Registration is ongoing, Monday through Friday from 3-8 pm.

South Boston Real Estate Year in Review: Prices Rage On

T

he 2017 year-end numbers are in for South Boston and for the eighth year in a row median sales prices for all types of property have increased.

Sales are up 7.7%, where the medium sales price in 2016 was $650,000 and now has risen to $700,500. The reason for this rise in prices is Southie’s desirable neighborhood with waterfront property, the Seaport and downtown close by. But also there is still a shortage of inventory, despite all the building in the neighborhood, exerting upward pressure on prices.

In the early 2000’s it wasn’t uncommon to see 300-400 properties on the market, and as of this report there are only

78 properties listed. This only represents one month’s inventory, which is far less than average inventory of about four months.

While the prices of property have gone up, the number of sales have stabilized- or gone down. The resale market for condominiums are down because people are holding onto their property, aren’t finding suitable real estate in suburbia, or they’ve chosen to

rent their property. There are signs that the rental market is softening.

With interest rates trending up, sooner or later this will put pressure on the housing prices, perhaps creating some softening in sales. Given all the construction on the Seaport, with new companies moving into our region we could withstand a national interest rate hike: but sooner or later rising rates are bound to affect the market. So what does this mean to buyers? Buyers might decide to make a purchase now before rates go up, so 2018 should show some activity in sales.

Another way to view the market is to estimate where we are in the current cycle. While we consider it still a seller’s market, market fluctuation will occur and could spell the end

of the positive eight-year cycle.

So the question will be asked in this interesting market is are we going into the 9th year of a real estate boom, or will things soften.

For the future we are cautiously optimistic given the strength of the general economy, Boston’s continued building boom, and the location of our neighborhood to significant commercial interests.
